血吸虫类中如血居科(sanguinicolidae)的Aporocotyle simplex Odhner,1900、裂体科(Schistosomatidae)的日本血吸虫(Schistosoma japonicum)曼氏血吸虫(S.mansoni)及埃及血吸虫(S.haematobium)等多种血吸虫均经扫描电镜观察(Johnson and Moriearts,1969;Silk et al., 1969;Robson and Erasmus, 1970; Miller et al., 1972; Kuntz et al.,1976、1977;Voge et al., 1978; Thulin, 1980;及何毅勋和马金鑫,1980等)。关于土耳其斯坦东毕吸虫[Orientobitharzia lurkestanica(skrjabin,1913)Dut et Srivastava,1955]的体表扫描电镜尚无报告,而只见有此虫种体壁及肠管的透射电镜观察的资料(Lavrov and Fedoseenke,1978)。本文部分作者最近在内蒙东部兴安岭以南部分地区进行牛羊土  相似文献

A tegumental surface membrane antigen of Schistosoma mansoni has been identified by use of a monoclonal antibody. The binding of 125I-labeled monoclonal antibody showed that proteins sharing antigenic determinants recognized by this monoclonal antibody were present in cercariae and worms of both sexes, but were absent from schistosome egg extract. The protein molecules expressing these antigenic determinants differed in molecular weight: 120,000 in cercaria and 170,000 in male and female worms. The cercarial glycoprotein immunoprecipitated with the monoclonal antibody was also immunoprecipited by sera of infected humans, as shown by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and tryptic peptide mapping. The location of the glycoprotein identified by the monoclonal antibody was restricted to the spines of the schistosomular surface, the tubercle-associated spines of the male worm, and the dorsal spines of the female worm. The spine glycoprotein was readily purified by immunoaffinity chromatography. These findings are discussed in relation to parasite development and the relevance of this antibody for serodiagnosis and immunoprophylaxis.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopical studies of adult male and female Schistosoma nasale are reported. The tubercles on the dorsal and dorso-lateral surfaces of unpaired male S. nasale are devoid of spines. In paired male worms the tubercles on the dorsal surface are large and also are devoid of spines, but some tubercles on the dorso-lateral surface possess spines. Pit-like openings are visible on the surface of the smooth tubercles. The oral and ventral suckers on the male worm are well developed and are invested with spines, as are the gynaecophoric canal and flap. Ciliated sensory receptors are distributed over the surface of the male worm. The oral and ventral suckers of the female worm are much smaller than those of the male: spines occur on both suckers. The surface of the female is non-tuberculate and is thrown into transverse folds. Pit-like openings are visible at higher magnifications. The anterior end of the female is heavily invested in ciliated receptors, whereas the posterior end is heavily spined. The surface topography of S. nasale is discussed in relation to other species of Schistosoma.  相似文献

The tegumental surface of a new strigeid metacercaria, Nematostrigea sp., which is a parasite of the freshwater fish Channa gachua (Hamilton) in central Vietnam, is described for the first time using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. In addition to the general tegumental surface in various parts of the body, details of the surface of the suckers, lappets and holdfast organ are presented, as are variations in the form and distribution of the body spines. As good taxonomic criteria are few in diplostomoid metacercariae at both specific and generic levels, a number of the ultrastructural features revealed may prove to represent taxonomically informative characters. These include the presence of: two rings of dome-shaped papillae localised at different levels on the rim of the oral sucker, a single ring of ciliated papillae on the inner margin of the ventral sucker and a band of dome-shaped papillae along the lateral margins of the broad body-fold in the ventral forebody; an unarmed oral sucker and anteroventral surface of the forebody, although the latter bears protuberant secretory pores; an armed ventral sucker covered by six-pointed spines, except on its rim; multi-pointed spines along the dorsal and ventral sides of the forebody, with the number of their teeth increasing posteriorly; multi-pointed spines on the forebody which gradually transform into single-pointed, more widely distributed spines on the hindbody, disappearing completely at posterior end of the body; the surface of the lappets with a particular distribution of pores leading to three types of secretory glands and three topographical modifications (areas where the surface is smooth, bears digitiform processes or bears recurved, dagger-shaped spines); and the surface of the holdfast organ which is covered with densely packed, straight or slightly curved, simple spines on its lateral surface but is smooth medially.  相似文献

The significance of elongation of the first and second spines of the first dorsal fin in male Eviota abax (Gobiidae) was examined in relation to female preference. Reproductive behavior occurred in three phases: male approach to female home, male leading female to nest, and male entering nest. During each phase, the female either accompanied the male or departed. The ratio of positive female mating responses to males before the elongated male dorsal spines were clipped and thereafter was compared in an aquarium. Females preferred male elongated spines in the first phase of courtship, but not in the second phase . Because females may be more exposed to predators during the second phase, owing to conspicuous male courtship, their greater receptivity to elongated dorsal spines in the first phase may decrease predation pressures during subsequent phases of courtship. Schistosome parasites have evolved to produce a number of unique features in their life history; one of these is separate sexes. This has, in turn, led to a novel interplay between the male and female parasite that has been recognized for over 50 years: the growth and reproductive development of the female parasite is in some way regulated by the male schistosome. Early classical and later experimental studies established that the presence of the male schistosome is necessary not only for the initiation of female development but also for the maintenance of her mature state. The male parasite regulates the reproductive development of the female, partly by providing a stimulus that is necessary for the development of the vitelline gland. The cells of the vitelline gland provide nutrients and shell precursors for the egg. Also in this review by Philip LoVerde and Li-ly Chen, it is interesting to note that recent molecular studies have confirmed early work by showing that gene expression in the female parasite is developmentally regulated in a tissue-specific manner and that this gene expression is controlled by the presence of a male parasite.  相似文献

A central role for P48/45 in malaria parasite male gamete fertility   总被引:21,自引:0,他引:21  
Fertilization and zygote development are obligate features of the malaria parasite life cycle and occur during parasite transmission to mosquitoes. The surface protein PFS48/45 is expressed by male and female gametes of Plasmodium falciparum and PFS48/45 antibodies prevent zygote development and transmission. Here, gene disruption was used to show that Pfs48/45 and the ortholog Pbs48/45 from a rodent malaria parasite P. berghei play a conserved and important role in fertilization. p48/45- parasites had a reduced capacity to produce oocysts in mosquitoes due to greatly reduced zygote formation. Unexpectedly, only male gamete fertility of p48/45- parasites was affected, failing to penetrate otherwise fertile female gametes. P48/45 is shown to be a surface protein of malaria parasites with a demonstrable role in fertilization.  相似文献

The surface topography of 15-day-old adult Echinoparyphium recurvatum (Von Linstow, 1873) sensu stricto, from an isolate of the parasite utilizing Lymnaea peregra as first intermediate host in southern England, is described and illustrated using scanning electron microscopy, and is compared to those of other Echinoparyphium species from Europe, and with those of E. recurvatum of East Asian origin. The general morphology of tegumental features was found to be very similar to that of worms of the same age observed in a previous study on a Korean isolate of E. recurvatum. Comparison of collar and body spination of E. recurvatum with other 45-collar-spined members of the genus in Europe revealed some significant differences in morphology. Collar spines of E. recurvatum were found to be shorter and more pointed than those of Echinoparyphium mordwilkoi. The body spines of E. recurvatum are rounded and scale-like, extending just beyond the ventral sucker, contrasting with the pointed, thorn-shaped body spines of E. mordwilkoi, extending posteriorly to the level of the second testis. Body spine shape and distribution in E. recurvatum were found to be more similar to those of Echinoparyphium pseudorecurvatum. The value of SEM studies in elucidating the relationship between members of the genus Echinoparyphium in Britain/Europe and those in Africa, Asia and North America is suggested.  相似文献

The elementary composition [Na, Mg, P, S, Cl, K, Ca and Fe] of the tegument, tegumental spines, and subtegumental tissues of adult male and female Schistosoma mansoni have been determined by electron probe X-ray microanalysis of unfixed, freeze-dried cryosections. Statistical analysis of the results suggests that there are distinct differences in the elemental composition of the tissues both between and within individual male and female worms, and between male and female worms in general. In particular, there were significant variations in the elemental contents of the tissues between individual male and female worms, which may reflect differences in the physiology and/or metabolic state of the worms. Significant differences in the elemental composition of the various tissues examined within individual worms were also found. In general, in both male and female worms, there were significantly higher elemental levels in the tegument, as opposed to the subtegumental tissues. The elemental composition of the tegumental spines in both male and female worms differed from that of the tegumental cytoplasm, although the differences in the elemental composition between spines from male and female worms reflected the differences in the elemental content between the teguments themselves. Differences in the elemental composition of the tissues between male and female worms were also found, with the female tegument containing significantly higher elemental levels (with the exception of Cl) than the male tegument. In particular, the tegument of female worms contained higher levels of calcium and, in relatively small areas, isolated calcium-containing granules. This higher tegumental calcium level in female worms may reflect a higher calcium demand by sexually mature female worms due to the presence, within the mature vitelline cells, of calcium-containing corpuscles and the production of large numbers of eggs.  相似文献

The environmental factors that drive the evolution of parasite life histories are mostly unknown. Given that hosts provide the principal environmental features parasites have to deal with, and given that these features (such as resource availability and immune responses) are well characterized by the life history of the host, we may expect natural selection to result in covariation between parasite and host life histories. Moreover, some parasites show a high degree of host specificity, and cladistic analyses have shown that host and parasite phylogenies can be highly congruent. These considerations suggest that parasite and host life histories may covary. The central argument in the theory of life history evolution concerns the existence of trade-offs between traits. For parasitic nematodes it has been shown that larger body sizes induce higher fecundity, but this is achieved at the expense of delayed maturity. As high adult mortality would select for reduced age at maturity, the selective benefit of increased fecundity is expressed only if adult mortality is low. Parasite adult mortality may depend on a number of factors, including host longevity. Here we tested the hypothesis concerning the positive covariation between parasite body size (which reflects parasite longevity) and host longevity. To achieve this goal, we used the association between the pinworms (Oxyuridae, Nematoda) and their primate hosts. Oxyurids are highly host specific and are supposed to be involved in a coevolutionary process with their hosts. We found that female parasite body length was positively correlated with host longevity after correcting for phylogeny and host body mass. Conversely, male parasite body length and host longevity were not correlated. These results confirm that host longevity may represent a constraint on the evolution of body size in oxyurids, at least in females. The discrepancy between female and male oxyurids is likely to depend on the particular mode of reproduction of this taxon (haplodiploidy), which should result in weak (or even null) selection pressures to an increase of body size in males.  相似文献

From 13 to 34% of these worms were found in pairs, compared with 0 to 7% in singly exposed controls. ‘Inner’ males in homosexual pairs showed no histological evidence of female reproductive structures, but were stunted, had poorly developed testes, and the high nuclear density characteristic of mature females. More vitelline follicles occurred in unpaired unisexual males than in homosexually paired males, fewest in bisexually paired males. Uptake of tyrosine, an indicator of vitelline development, occurred in the same relative order. The gynecophoral microenvironment often led to stunting, probably through starvation induced by the relative inaccessibility of host blood to homosexually clasped males.  相似文献

Conflict between the sexes over mating decision may result in antagonistic coevolution in structures that increase control over copulation. In Aquarius paludum both females and males have long abdominal spines. We tested the hypothesis that abdominal spines increase female ability to resist male mating attempts and reduce the costs of mating in A. paludum. We manipulated female spine length and observed female mating and egg-production rate in two different studies. We found that females with intact spines succeeded to reject male mating attempt more often than females with removed spines. Intact females also mated less often than females with removed or shortened spines. Male presence and mating rate increased female egg number. Our results thus support the hypothesis that abdominal spines help female to reject male mating attempts but contrary to predictions, we found that A. paludum females somehow benefit from multiple matings in spite of the sexual conflict.  相似文献

The surface of Trachelomonas was examined readily with SEM at magnifications up to X 20,000 in unfixed or fixed material. Cells were placed directly on specimen holders without washing, air dried, and coated with aluminum or gold. Clones of T. grandis, T. hispida var. coronata, and T. oblonga var. punctata and three species from a natural collection showed the following features: the lorica was punctate or solid, and the surface projections, when present, consisted of minute papillae (0.1 μm), larger, often globose papillae (up to 0.8 μm), and spines which tapered to a point or which had parallel sides and ended bluntly; spines appeared hollow or solid. Pringsheim's clone of T. oblonga var. punctata, which he described as a new spineless variety, possessed short tapering spines and globose papillae. Such observations suggest that a major problem in delimiting species may be in discovering the ornamentation potential of a clone. The discovery of new features of the lorica (e.g., minute papillae and hollow projections), the clarification of shapes of surface features, and, in general, the excellent resolution at 10 times the usable magnification of light microscopy dictate a reexamination of known species with SEM. We suggest that a SEM study of the variation in the lorica surface in clonal material will lead to a recognition of polymorphism and eventually to a clearer understanding of taxonomic entities described from natural collections.  相似文献

The contemporary explanation for the rapid evolutionary diversification of animal genitalia is that such traits evolve by post‐copulatory sexual selection. Here, we test the hypothesis that the male genital spines of Drosophila ananassae play an adaptive role in post‐copulatory sexual selection. Whereas previous work on two Drosophila species shows that these spines function in precopulatory sexual selection to initiate genital coupling and promote male competitive copulation success, further research is needed to evaluate the potential for Drosophila genital spines to have a post‐copulatory function. Using a precision micron‐scale laser surgery technique, we test the effect of spine length reduction on copulation duration, male competitive fertilization success, female fecundity and female remating behaviour. We find no evidence that male genital spines in this species have a post‐copulatory adaptive function. Instead, females mated to males with surgically reduced/blunted genital spines exhibited comparatively greater short‐term fecundity relative to those mated by control males, indicating that the natural (i.e. unaltered) form of the trait may be harmful to females. In the absence of an effect of genital spine reduction on measured components of post‐copulatory fitness, the harm seems to be a pleiotropic side effect rather than adaptive. Results are discussed in the context of sexual conflict mediating the evolution of male genital spines in this species and likely other Drosophila.  相似文献

At each low tide, male and female Uca tangeri remove mudballs from inside their burrows and place them on the surface. Previous studies have shown clear intersexual differences in mudball arrangements. However, we noticed that some females placed their mudballs in an arrangement similar to that of males. In this study, we investigated several factors that may have been responsible for this change in female mudballing behavior. We found no significant effect of the lunar cycle, female size and reproductive state, or burrow features. We briefly discuss the avoidance of sexual coercion or parasite modification of host behavior as possible factors. Five Swainson's spurfowl collected in Free State Province, South Africa, were examined for helminth parasites, and the nematodes Acuaria gruveli, Cyrnea parroti, Gongylonema congolense, Subulura dentigera, Subulura suctoria and a new Tetrameres species were recovered. Their respective prevalence was 100, 20, 80, 20, 20 and 20%. These nematodes are all new parasite records for Swainson's spurfowl, and Acuaria gruveli constitutes a new geographical record as well. A single specimen of Cyrnea eurycerca was found in an Orange River francolin, representing a new host and geographical record for this parasite. The new species, for which the name Tetrameres swainsonii is proposed, can be differentiated from its congeners by a combination of the following characters of males: two rows of body spines, a single spicule which is 1152-1392 microm long, and eight pairs of caudal spines arranged in two ventral and two lateral rows of four spines each. The single female has the globular shape typical of the genus.  相似文献

The morphology of relaxed cystacanths of polymorphid acanthocephalans collected from notothenioid fishes in the Beagle Channel (Magellanic subregion of sub-Antarctica) is described. A parasite of birds, Andracantha baylisi (Zdzitowiecki, 1986), was found in Patagonotothen longipes and Champsocephalus esox. It has: a proboscis 0.82–0.89 mm long; a proboscis hook formula of 16 rows of 9/10–10/11, including 4–5 basal hooks; distal hooks with the longest blades; a fore-trunk not separated from the hind-trunk by a constriction; large somatic spines arranged in two zones separated by a zone of small, loosely dispersed spines; and only the anterior 36–40% of ventral side of the trunk is covered with spines. One male specimen of Corynosoma sp. was found in Patagonotothen tessellata. It differs from A. baylisi in that the distal proboscis hooks are similar in length to the prebasal hooks, it has a smaller proboscis (0.77 mm) and in the distribution of the somatic spines, which are contiguous with the genital spines on the ventral side of the trunk and lack a zone of small spines between zones of larger spines. A parasite of seals and fur seals, Corynosoma evae Zdzitowiecki, 1984, was found in P. longipes and Champsocephalus esox. It has: a proboscis 0.61–0.78 mm long; a proboscis hook formula of 20–22 rows of 12–13, including 3/4–4 basal hooks; prebasal hooks with the longest blades; a trunk divided into fore-trunk and hind-trunk; somatic spines covering the anterior 64–74% of the ventral side of the trunk; genital spines present only in males; and a terminal genital opening in both sexes. Corynosoma beaglense n. sp. was found in Champsocephalus esox. It has: an almost cylindrical proboscis (length 0.52–0.56 mm); a proboscis hook formula of 16 rows of 9/10–10/11, including 4–4/5 basal hooks; distal hooks shorter than the prebasal hooks; a fore-trunk not separated from the hind-trunk by a constriction; somatic spines contiguous with the genital spines on the ventral side of the trunk of the male and covering the entire length of the ventral side of the female trunk, and the presence of genital spines surrounding the terminal genital pore of the male.
