In four human learning experiments (Pavlovian skin conductance, causal learning, speeded classification task), we evaluated several associative learning theories that assume either an elemental (modified unique cue model and Harris’ model) or a configural (Pearce’s configural theory and an extension of it) form of stimulus processing. The experiments used two modified patterning problems (A/B/C+, AB/BC/AC+ vs. ABC-; A+, BC+ vs. ABC-). Pearce’s configural theory successfully predicted all of our data reflecting early stimulus processing, while the predictions of the elemental theories were in accord with all of our data reflecting later stages of stimulus processing. Our results suggest that the form of stimulus representation depends on the amount of time available for stimulus processing. Our findings highlight the necessity to investigate stimulus processing during conditioning on a finer time scale than usually done in contemporary research.  相似文献

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) have remarkable visual learning and discrimination abilities that extend beyond learning simple colours, shapes or patterns. They can discriminate landscape scenes, types of flowers, and even human faces. This suggests that in spite of their small brain, honeybees have a highly developed capacity for processing complex visual information, comparable in many respects to vertebrates. Here, we investigated whether this capacity extends to complex images that humans distinguish on the basis of artistic style: Impressionist paintings by Monet and Cubist paintings by Picasso. We show that honeybees learned to simultaneously discriminate between five different Monet and Picasso paintings, and that they do not rely on luminance, colour, or spatial frequency information for discrimination. When presented with novel paintings of the same style, the bees even demonstrated some ability to generalize. This suggests that honeybees are able to discriminate Monet paintings from Picasso ones by extracting and learning the characteristic visual information inherent in each painting style. Our study further suggests that discrimination of artistic styles is not a higher cognitive function that is unique to humans, but simply due to the capacity of animals—from insects to humans—to extract and categorize the visual characteristics of complex images.  相似文献

The performance of individual bumblebees at colour discrimination tasks was tested in a controlled laboratory environment. Bees were trained to discriminate between rewarded target colours and differently coloured distractors, and then tested in non-rewarded foraging bouts. For the discrimination of large colour distances bees made relatively fast decisions and selected target colours with a high degree of accuracy, but for the discrimination of smaller colour distances the accuracy decreased and the bees response times to find correct flowers significantly increased. For small colour distances there was also significant linear correlations between accuracy and response time for the individual bees. The results show both between task and within task speed-accuracy tradeoffs in bees, which suggests the possibility of a sophisticated and dynamic decision-making process.  相似文献

The prototypical form of the Ser/Thr phosphatase PP2A is a heterotrimeric complex consisting of catalytic subunit (C), and A and B regulatory subunits. C-terminal methylation of PP2A-C influences holoenzyme assembly. Using late gestation development in the rat as an in vivo model of liver growth, we found that PP2A-C protein and activity levels were higher in fetal compared to adult liver extracts. However, unmethylated PP2A-C was much higher in the adult extracts. In MonoQ fractionation, unmethylated C eluted separately from methylated C, which was present predominantly in ABC heterotrimers. Gel filtration chromatography revealed that some unmethylated C was present as free catalytic subunit in adult liver. In addition, a significant proportion of PP2A was in inactive forms that may involve novel regulatory subunits. Our results indicate that methylation of PP2A-C appears to be a primary determinant for the biogenesis of PP2A heterotrimers.  相似文献

A modified autoshaping paradigm (significantly different from those previously reported in the summation literature) was employed to allow for the simultaneous assessment of stimulus summation and subtraction in pigeons. The response requirements and the probability of food delivery were adjusted such that towards the end of training 12 of 48 trials ended in food delivery, the same proportion as under testing. Stimuli (outlines of squares of three sizes and colors: A, B, and C) were used that could be presented separately or in any combination of two or three stimuli. Twelve of the pigeons (summation groups) were trained with either A, B, and C or with AB, BC, and CA, and tested with ABC. The remaining 12 pigeons (subtraction groups) received training with ABC but were tested with A, B, and C or with AB, BC, and CA. These groups were further subdivided according to whether stimulus elements were presented either in a concentric or dispersed manner. Summation did not occur; subtraction occurred in the two concentric groups. For interpretation of the results, configural theory, the Rescorla-Wagner model, and the composite-stimulus control model were considered. The results suggest different mechanisms responsible for summation and subtraction.  相似文献

Summary. Objective: Chemo-therapeutic treatment of glioma patients has minor success. Little is known about mechanisms of a pronounced resistance of gliomas towards actual therapies, yet. ABC-1 belongs to the group of transporters known to be involved in the export of hydrophobic substances and vascular regulation. This study investigates an effect of both temozolomide (TMZ) treatment and/or irradiation on the expression of the ABC-1 transporter in human U87-MG glioma cells.Material and methods: In parallel experiments U87-MG cells underwent either irradiation (RT), chemo-treatment (CT) using TMZ, and combined chemo/radiation-treatment (CT/RT). After each treatment the cells were incubated either 2 or 24 hours at 37°C and counted before protein analysis using Western-Blot technique.Results and conclusions: An exponential growth of cellular density was observed for both untreated and irradiated cells being, however, about 2-times slower in irradiated compared to untreated cells. In contrast the density increase of chemo-treated cells as well as that of cells, which underwent the combined CT/RT treatment was of linear nature. ABC-1 expression was detected in untreated as well as treated cells. Increasing cell density and all kinds of treatment resulted in a considerably enhanced ABC-1 expression. CT treatment resulted in highly up-regulated ABC-1 expression especially in non-confluent cultures compared to untreated cells. Irradiation had a comparable or even higher inducible effect on the ABC-1 expression rates depending, however, on cell density. The highest expression rates were observed in cultures with high cellular density 2 hours after application of the combined treatment. Strong up-regulation of ABC-1 expression under both irradiation and chemo-treatment might be a clue to multidrug and irradiation cross-resistance mechanisms of malignant glioma cells converting the ABC-1 transporter into an attractive pharmacological target for a clinical breakthrough in the therapy of malignant gliomas.  相似文献

I measured preference for paintings (Renoir vs. Picasso or Kandinsky vs. Mondrian) in mice. In general mice did not display a painting preference except for two mice: one preferred Renoir to Picasso, and the other preferred Kandinsky to Mondrian. Thereafter, I examined discrimination of paintings with new mice. When exposure to paintings of one artist was associated with an injection of morphine (3.0 mg/kg), mice displayed conditioned preference for those paintings, showing discrimination of paintings by Renoir from those by Picasso, and paintings by Kandinsky from those by Mondrian after the conditioning. They also exhibited generalization of the preference to novel paintings of the artists. After conditioning with morphine for a set of paintings consisting of two artists, mice showed discrimination between two sets of paintings also from the two artists but not in association with morphine. These results suggest that mice can discriminate not only between an artist’s style but also among paintings of the same artist. When mice were trained to discriminate a pair of paintings by Kandinsky and Renoir in an operant chamber equipped with a touch screen, they showed transfer of the discrimination to new pairs of the artists, but did not show transfer of discrimination of paintings by other artists, suggesting generalization.  相似文献

The present paper describes a quick and efficient method for assessing olfactory discrimination learning in mice. In training mice received trials in which one odor (CS+) was paired with sugar and another odor (CS-) was paired with no sugar. When the mice were subsequently placed in a chamber with CS+ odor at one end and CS- odor at the other, they spent more time digging in CS+ than in CS- odor. In Experiment 2 mice trained with this procedure and tested after 60 days also spent more time digging in CS+ than CS- in the test phase, indicating that this olfactory discrimination task is effective for assessing long-term memory. In addition to the outbred strain of CD1 mice used in Experiments 1 and 2, C57Bl/6NCr/BR and DBA/2NCr/BR mice used in Experiment 3 also acquired this learned odor discrimination. Moreover, Experiment 4 showed that DBA animals were capable of acquiring this odor discrimination after receiving only two training trials (one exposure each to CS+ and CS-) per day for 4 days.  相似文献

The structural and genetic organization of the Escherichia coli O52 O antigen was studied. As identified by sugar and methylation analysis and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the O antigen of E. coli O52 has a partially O-acetylated disaccharide repeating unit (O unit) containing D-fucofuranose and 6-deoxy-D-manno-heptopyranose, as well as a minor 6-deoxy-3-O-methylhexose (most likely, 3-O-methylfucose). The O-antigen gene cluster of E. coli O52, which is located between the galF and gnd genes, was found to contain putative genes for the synthesis of the O-antigen constituents, sugar transferase genes, and ABC-2 transporter genes. Further analysis confirmed that O52 employs an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter-dependent pathway for translocation and polymerization of the O unit. This is the first report of an ABC transporter being involved in translocation of a heteropolysaccharide O antigen in E. coli. Genes specific for E. coli O52 were also identified.  相似文献

Bees were trained to discriminate between two patterns, one of which was associated with a reward, in a Y-choice apparatus with the targets presented vertically at a distance at an angular subtense of 50°. Previous work with this apparatus has found discrimination between two patterns of coloured gratings or radial sectors that are fixed in different orientations during the training. When there was contrast to the blue receptors alone, gratings of period 6° were resolved, and 4° when there was contrast to the green receptors. In the present work, bees discriminate between a pattern containing tangentially arranged edges and one containing radially arranged edges, both with no average edge orientation. The targets were rotated every 5 min to make the locations of areas useless as cues. The edges remained consistently radial or tangential and were therefore the only cues. Tests with patterns of selected colours and various levels of grey show that for each colour there is a level of grey at which discrimination fails. Discrimination is therefore colour-blind. The same patterns were made with combinations of coloured papers that give no contrast to the green receptors or alternatively to the blue receptors. The bees discriminate only if the edges between colours present a contrast to the green receptors. The system that discriminates generalized radial and tangential cues is therefore colour blind because the inputs are restricted to the green receptors, not because receptor outputs are added together. Real-time voltammetry measurements from cracked PC12 cells were used to analyze the role of synaptotagmin-SNARE interactions during Ca2+-triggered exocytosis. The isolated C2A domain of synaptotagmin I neither binds SNAREs nor inhibits norepinephrine secretion. In contrast, two C2 domains in tandem (either C2A-C2B or C2A-C2A) bind strongly to SNAREs, displace native synaptotagmin from SNARE complexes, and rapidly inhibit exocytosis. The tandem C2 domains of synaptotagmin cooperate via a novel mechanism in which the disruptive effects of Ca2+ ligand mutations in one C2 domain can be partially alleviated by the presence of an adjacent C2 domain. Complete disruption of Ca2+-triggered membrane and target membrane SNARE interactions required simultaneous neutralization of Ca2+ ligands in both C2 domains of the protein. We conclude that synaptotagmin-SNARE interactions regulate membrane fusion and that cooperation between synaptotagmin's C2 domains is crucial to its function.  相似文献

Previous studies suggest fundamental differences between the perceptual learning of speech and non-speech stimuli. One major difference is in the way variability in the training set affects learning and its generalization to untrained stimuli: training-set variability appears to facilitate speech learning, while slowing or altogether extinguishing non-speech auditory learning. We asked whether the reason for this apparent difference is a consequence of the very different methodologies used in speech and non-speech studies. We hypothesized that speech and non-speech training would result in a similar pattern of learning if they were trained using the same training regimen. We used a 2 (random vs. blocked pre- and post-testing) × 2 (random vs. blocked training) × 2 (speech vs. non-speech discrimination task) study design, yielding 8 training groups. A further 2 groups acted as untrained controls, tested with either random or blocked stimuli. The speech task required syllable discrimination along 4 minimal-pair continua (e.g., bee-dee), and the non-speech stimuli required duration discrimination around 4 base durations (e.g., 50 ms). Training and testing required listeners to pick the odd-one-out of three stimuli, two of which were the base duration or phoneme continuum endpoint and the third varied adaptively. Training was administered in 9 sessions of 640 trials each, spread over 4–8 weeks. Significant learning was only observed following speech training, with similar learning rates and full generalization regardless of whether training used random or blocked schedules. No learning was observed for duration discrimination with either training regimen. We therefore conclude that the two stimulus classes respond differently to the same training regimen. A reasonable interpretation of the findings is that speech is perceived categorically, enabling learning in either paradigm, while the different base durations are not well-enough differentiated to allow for categorization, resulting in disruption to learning.  相似文献

Transgenic Brassica napus can be easily crossed with wild Brassica rapa. The spread of the transgene to wild species has aroused the general concern about its effect on ecological and agricultural systems. This paper was designated, by means of population genetics, to study the fate of a transgene escape from B. napus to B. rapa. Three models were proposed to survey the change in gene frequency during successive backcross processes by considering selection pressures against aneuploids, against herbicide-susceptible individuals, and by considering A-C intergenomic recombination and the effect of genetic drift. The transmission rate of an A-chromosome gene through an individual to the next generation was 50%, irrespective of the chromosome number; while that of a C-chromosome transgene varied from 8.7% to 39.9%, depending on the chromosome number of the individual used in the backcross. Without spraying herbicide, the frequency of an A-chromosome gene was 50% in the BC(1) generation, and decreased by 50% with the advance of each backcross generation; that of a C-chromosome gene was around 39.9% in BC(1), 7.7% in BC(2), 1.2% in BC(3) and 0.1% in the BC(4) generation. Under the selection pressure against herbicide-susceptible individuals, the frequency of a transgene reached a stable value of about 5.5% within six generations of successive backcrossings. The effect of genetic drift and intergenomic exchange on gene transmission rate was discussed. It is suggested that the transgene integrated on a C-chromosome (or better on a cytoplasm genome) is safer than that on an A-chromosome. The transgenic cultivars should be cultivated rotationally by year(s) with other non-transgenic varieties in order to reduce the transfer of the transgene to wild B. rapa species.  相似文献

Summary A new training and testing paradigm for walking sheep blowflies, Lucilia cuprina, is described. A fly is trained by presenting it with a droplet of sugar solution on a patch of coloured paper. After having consumed the sugar droplet, the fly starts a systematic search. While searching, it is confronted with an array of colour marks consisting of four colours displayed on the test cardboard (Fig. 1). Colours used for training and test include blue, green, yellow, orange, red, white and black.Before training, naive flies are tested for their spontaneous colour preferences on the test array. Yellow is visited most frequently, green least frequently (Table 2). Spontaneous colour preferences do not simply depend on subjective brightness (Table 1).The flies trained to one of the colours prefer this colour significantly (Figs. 5 and 9–11). This behaviour reflects true learning rather than sensitisation (Figs. 6–7). The blue and yellow marks are learned easily and discriminated well (Figs. 5, 9, 11). White is also discriminated well, although the response frequencies are lower than to blue and yellow (Fig. 11). Green is discriminated from blue but weakly from yellow and orange (Figs. 5, 9, 10). Red is a stimulus as weak as black (Figs. 8, 9). These features of colour discrimination reflect the spectral loci of colours in the colour triangle (Fig. 14).The coloured papers seem to be discriminated mainly by the hue of colours (Fig. 12), but brightness may also be used to discriminate colour stimuli (Fig. 13).  相似文献

Alterations to the natural microbiome are linked to different diseases, and the presence or absence of specific microbes is directly related to disease outcomes. We performed a comprehensive analysis with unique cohorts of the four subtypes of breast cancer (BC) characterized by their microbial signatures, using a pan-pathogen microarray strategy. The signature (includes viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites) of each tumor subtype was correlated with clinical data to identify microbes with prognostic potential. The subtypes of BC had specific viromes and microbiomes, with ER+ and TN tumors showing the most and least diverse microbiome, respectively. The specific microbial signatures allowed discrimination between different BC subtypes. Furthermore, we demonstrated correlations between the presence and absence of specific microbes in BC subtypes with the clinical outcomes. This study provides a comprehensive map of the oncobiome of BC subtypes, with insights into disease prognosis that can be critical for precision therapeutic intervention strategies.Subject terms: Cancer, Prognostic markers  相似文献

In each of three experiments pigeons were trained on a simultaneous discrimination between stimuli that differed in both colour and orientation. For half the birds the colour dimension was relevant and for half orientation was relevant (i.e., differences along that dimension were correlated with reward and nonreward). All birds were then shifted to a second discrimination between new colours and orientations. For half this constituted an intradimensional shift in that the previously relevant dimension remained relevant; for the remainder the previously irrelevant dimension was made relevant (an extradimensional shift). Contrary to the predictions of attentional theory, the two types of shift were learned with equal ease.  相似文献

According to the classic model of regulation of sex hormone receptors biosynthesis in target tissues, oestrogen stimulates and progesterone inhibits biosynthesis in both receptors. One of the consequences of this model is a direct correlation between oestrogen (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) in target tissues. Here we investigate a correlation between ER and PR in calf endometrium and breast cancer (BC) tissues of women. A direct correlation was found between receptors in the calf endometrium (r = +0.70; p < 0.01). There were three variants of BC tissues: without correlation, with positive correlation (r = +0.49; p < 0.01), and with non-linear negative correlation between ER and PR. The last variant of samples were detected exclusively in patients operated in spring and fall. The non-linear negative correlation between ER and PR in BC tissues in spring and fall may indicate disregulation of sex hormone receptors biosynthesis under the influence of external factors.  相似文献

We investigated pattern discrimination by worker honeybees, Apis mellifera, focusing on the roles of spectral cues and the angular size of patterns. Free-flying bees were trained to discriminate concentric patterns in a Y-maze. The rewarded pattern could be composed of either a cyan and a yellow colour, which presented both different chromatic and achromatic L-receptor contrast, or an orange and a blue colour, which presented different chromatic cues, but the same L-receptor contrast. The non-rewarded alternative was either a single-coloured disc with the colour of the central disc or the surrounding ring of the pattern, a checkerboard pattern with non-resolvable squares, the reversed pattern, or the elements of the training pattern (disc or ring alone). Bees resolved and learned both colour elements in the rewarded patterns and their spatial properties. When the patterns subtended large visual angles, this discrimination used chromatic cues only. Patterns with yellow or orange central discs were generalised toward the yellow and orange colours, respectively. When the patterns subtended a visual angle close to the detection limit and L-receptor contrast was mediating discrimination, pattern perception was reduced: bees perceived only the pattern element with higher contrast.  相似文献

Effects of prior discrimination training on stimulus control by color and shape dimensions of compound stimuli were studied with college students. In Phase 1, single-stimulus discrimination training was conducted for two values of color and shape. Phase 2 discrimination training employed two 2-dimensional compound stimuli composed of the color and shape stimuli trained in Phase 1. For conflict-compound stimuli, the stimulus-response-consequence contingency was altered between phases for one stimulus dimension (target dimension), but not for the other, non-target, dimension. Level of congruence (100%, 25%, and 0%) of the contingency for the target dimension between phases was manipulated across groups. When each stimulus value was tested in Phase 3, level of Phase-2-consistent responding to the target dimension varied with level of Phase-1-to-Phase-2 congruence. In Experiment 2, training history for the non-target dimension was altered across three conditions: (a) Correlated with reinforcement, as in Experiment 1, (b) No-Training, or (c) Not-Correlated. Phase-2-consistent responding to the target cue in Phase 3 was lower under the latter conditions than under the Correlated condition, indicating that the non-target dimension modulated control by the target dimension, consistent with stimulus competition. The data suggest elemental, rather than configural processing of the compound stimuli during Phase 2.  相似文献
