Summary Compensatory growth in response to simulated belowground herbivory was studied in the old-field clonal perennialSolidago canadensis. We grew rootpruned plants and plants with intact root systems in soil with or without fertilizer. For individual current shoots (aerial shoot with rhizome and roots) and for whole clones the following predictions were tested: a) root removal is compensated by increased root growth, b) fertilizer application leads to increased allocation to aboveground plant organs and increased leaf turnover, c) effects of fertilizer application are reduced in rootpruned plants. When most roots (90%) were removed current shoots quickly restored equilibrium between above-and belowground parts by compensatory belowground growth whereas the whole clone responded with reduced aboveground growth. This suggests that parts of a clone which are shared by actively growing shoots act as a buffer that can be used as source of material for compensatory growth in response to herbivory. Current shoots increased aboveground mass and whole clones reduced belowground mass in response to fertilizer application, both leading to increased allocation to aboverground parts. Also with fertilizer application both root-pruned and not root-pruned plants increased leaf and shoot turnover. Unfertilized plants, whether rootpruned or not, showed practically no aboveground growth and very little leaf and shoot turnover. Effects of root removal were as severe or more severe under conditions of high as under conditions of low nutrients, suggesting that negative effects of belowground herbivory are not ameliorated by abundant nutrients. Root removal may negate some effects of fertilizer application on the growth of current shoots and whole clones.  相似文献

Vegetative and chemical responses to simulated leaf browsing during the growth season, and their subsequent effect on herbivory, were studied on Combretum apiculatum Sonder (Combretaceae) in Botswana. Treatments (50% and 100% leaf and shoot apex removal) were performed just before the shoot growth curve levelled out, and responses recorded 3 months later, just before leaf fall. Compared to controls, defoliation treatments, removing apical dominance, reduced growth in tree height and increased shoot mortality, although the production of lateral shoots increased. At the end of the trial, there was no difference in total length of annual shoots between treatment groups. Significant refoliation occurred only after 100% defoliation. Refoliated leaves were smaller and the 100% defoliated trees had a lower final leaf biomass. Total leaf biomass production was, however, equal for all treatment groups. Refoliated leaves contained higher levels of N, lower levels of acid-detergent fibre (ADF) and total phenolics, and showed a trend towards lower levels of condensed tannins, compared to leaves on control trees. Such chemical changes may be due to either carbon stress or to younger physiological age of new leaves. In spite of the observed potential increase in food quality, we found no evidence of increased levels of insect or ungulate herbivory on refoliated leaves, which, at least for insect herbivory, may be explained by the reduction in temporal availability of leaves. We conclude that the single severe defoliation was not detrimental to C. apiculatum in the short-term, although the resource loss and induced compensatory growth may produce negative effects during subsequent growth seasons.  相似文献

Summary Three types of experiments indicate that the functional organization of the mountain birch may influence the ways in which the tree responds to simulated or natural herbivory. The first experiment showed that herbivory to both short and long shoot leaves affects plant development but, because growth largely proceeds by resources of the previous year, is manifested only in the year following the damage. The second experiment showed that even partial damage to a single long shoot leaf caused the axillary bud of that leaf to produce a shorter shoot the next year. Therefore, the value of a leaf depends also on the organ which it is subtending. In the third experiment we manipulated the apical dominance of shoots in ramets and caused improvement to leaf quality in extant shoots. Ramets within a tree responded individually, probably mediated by disturbance of the hormonal control because removal of apical buds elicited the response although removal of the same number of basal buds did not. Induced amelioration is a different response to induced resistance. The two responses are triggered by different cues and may occur in the same plant. By altering hormonal balance of shoots it is potentially possible for herbivores to induce amelioration of food quality. The ways in which herbivory is simulated may explain variability of results obtained when herbivory-induced responses in plants have been studied.  相似文献

Snow (1931) showed that the fate of a branch of a plant that had suffered local herbivory could be determined by correlative effects of other branches. This neglected work was continued in the current study, herbivory being simulated by the removal of leaves of different ages from pea plants with two branches. A damaged branch was suppressed when an undamaged alternative branch was present; otherwise the damage never prevented continued development. The removal of mature leaves had a smaller effect than the removal of immature, expanding leaves. When leaves were removed from both branches it was the branches that suffered less damage to their immature leaves that continued shoot development. Branches from which all photosynthetic leaves were repeatedly removed developed only when they retained their immature leaves and remained dominant, inhibiting the development — but not the photosynthesis — of the other branch on the same plant. Accounting for these results requires mechanisms that compare the different branches of the plant and select for development the ones that have the greatest potential for future, rather than present, photosynthesis. It is concluded that a compartmentalized or sectorial distribution of essential substrates can be modified by correlative relations that are probably mediated by hormones.  相似文献

Plants are able to compensate for loss of tissue due to herbivores at a variety of spatial and temporal scales, masking detrimental effects of herbivory on plant fitness at these scales. The stressing effect of herbivory could also produce instability in the development of plant modules, and measures of such instability may reflect the fitness consequences of herbivory if instability is related to components of plant fitness. We analyse the relationships between herbivory, developmental instability and production of female flowers and fruits of holm oak Quercus ilex trees by means of herbivore removal experiments. Removal of leaf herbivores reduced herbivory rates at the tree level, but had no effect on mean production of female flowers or mature fruits, whereas herbivory tended to enhance flower production and had no effect on fruit abortion at the shoot level. Differences in herbivory levels between shoots of the same branch did not affect the size and fluctuating asymmetry of intact leaves. These results indicate compensation for herbivory at the tree level and over-compensation at the shoot level in terms of allocation of resources to female flower production. Removal of insect herbivores produced an increase in the mean developmental instability of leaves at the tree level in the year following the insecticide treatment, and there was a direct relationship between herbivory rates in the current year and leaf fluctuating asymmetry the following year irrespective of herbivore removal treatment. Finally, the production of pistillate flowers and fruits by trees was inversely related to the mean fluctuating asymmetry of leaves growing the same year. Leaf fluctuating asymmetry was thus an estimator of the stressing effects of herbivory on adult trees, an effect that was delayed to the following year. As leaf fluctuating asymmetry was also related to tree fecundity, asymmetry levels provided a sensitive measure of plant performance under conditions of compensatory responses to herbivory.  相似文献

Perennial, polycarpic herbs can respond to herbivory either by (1) regrowth in the same season in order to compensate for lost reproductive structures or by (2) postponing reproduction until the following growing season. We tested these response patterns with the perennial umbellifer Pimpinella saxifraga by simulating flower herbivory and shoot grazing both in the field and in a common garden experiment. In the field, both simulated flower herbivory and grazing effectively suppressed current reproduction, whereas no statistically significant effects of previous-year treatments on growth or reproduction were found in the following year. In the common garden, in the first year the species fully compensated for simulated flower herbivory in vegetative parameters but seed set was reduced by 26%. After 2 years of flower removal, the plants overcompensated in shoot and root biomass by 47 and 46%, respectively, and compensated fully in reproductive performance. Simulated grazing resulted in 21% lower shoot biomass in the first season, but the root biomass was not affected. In the second season the root biomass increased by 43% as compared to the control plants. However, regrowth following simulated grazing resulted in a significant delay in flowering with the consequence that the seed yield of fertile plants was reduced by 55% as compared to the control plants. These results suggest that in resource-rich garden conditions P. saxifraga may immediately repair injuries caused by flower herbivory, but repairs more extensive shoot injury less successfully. Delayed phenology decreases the benefits of immediate repair. In resource-poor conditions, the benefits of regrowth can be negligible. Accordingly, in our field population, the plants postponed their reproduction until the following year in response to simulated grazing and frequently in response to flower removal. When the plants gain very little from regrowth, the costs of reproduction would select for postponed reproduction in response to injury.

Thorns as induced defenses: experimental evidence   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary We report evidence from controlled experiments that long straight thorns deter herbivory by browsers. Cut branches of three woody species that had their thorns removed suffered significantly greater herbivory by a tethered goat than did paired intact branches. Branches on living Acacia seyal plants that had their thorns removed suffered significantly greater herbivory by a wild population of free-ranging giraffes than did intact branches on the same plants. These differences in herbivory resulted in long term losses of branch length in clipped as opposed to control branches. In addition, branches within reach of giraffes produced longer thorns and a greater density of thorns than did higher branches. These results imply that increased thorn length is an induced defense. No significance should be attached to order of authorship  相似文献

Browsing is one of the main factors determining survival, growth rate, woodland structure, and distribution of the high mountain tree Polylepis australis. This species has a substantial regrowth capacity, which may function as a mechanism to tolerate herbivory, but it is unknown to what extent it may compensate for the impact of herbivory. In 15 low-density tree stands subject to exclusion, moderate, and heavy livestock pressure, we selected 12 P. australis individuals <2 m tall, tagged four new shoots per tree and measured shoot length every month during a year. At the stand and at the tree level, we analyzed monthly dynamics of growth and browsing, and the annual output in terms of total browsing and total gross and net growth (not discounting and discounting consumption, respectively). In addition, we assessed the influence of stand, tree and microsite characteristics on growth and browsing patterns. Polylepis australis fully compensated for herbivory in terms of shoot gross growth at moderate, but not at heavy livestock pressure. In terms of net growth, this species did not fully compensate for herbivory at any stocking rate. We found a strong coupling between browsing and growth along the year, suggesting that regrowth attracts browsing, and browsing promotes regrowth. At the stand level, annual gross growth was not affected by habitat characteristics, while at the tree level, annual gross growth decreased on more rocky microsites for browsed but not for unbrowsed trees. We concluded that stocking densities should be limited to allow for a reasonable annual net growth, as its nitrogen rich leaves are a valuable food resource and P. australis forests provide important ecosystem services.  相似文献

Summary We measured the effects ofEriophyes laevis mite galls on the relative growth of short shoot leaf area ofAlnus glutinosa. A portion of leaves was artificially removed from a set of short shoots with both high and low gall density to cause local stress conditions. Nontreated high and low gall density short shoots were used as controls. The results show that the relative growth of leaf area measured for short shoots is negatively affected by high gall density. Artificial leaf removal, on the other hand, had positive effects on leaf area growth. Interestingly, the growth of leaf area did not differ for high gall density short shoots with leaf removal and noninfested short shoots with no leaf removal. This result may be caused by the combined, opposite effects of leaf removal and gall infestation.  相似文献

Woody plant seedling establishment is constrained by herbivory in many semi‐arid savannas. We clipped shoots and cotyledons of three woody species 5‐day (=‘early’) or 28‐day (= ‘late’) post‐emergence to simulate herbivory. Seedlings had shoot apex, one or two cotyledon(s) removed, or were retained intact. Survival rates were ≥80%, ≥40% and ≥20% for Acacia nilotica, Acacia nigrescens and Faidherbia albida respectively. F. albida mobilized stored cotyledon reserves faster and consequently shed the cotyledons earlier than the two Acacia species. Cotyledons were shed off as late as 70 days post‐emergence with 5‐day shedding earlier than 28‐day and cotyledon life‐span decreasing with intensity of defoliation. Shoot apex removal 28‐day resulted in higher compensatory growth than 5‐day in all three species. Cotyledon removal had no effect on shoot length, while shoot apex removal reduced shoot length. In F. albida root growth was stimulated by shoot apex removal. We conclude that potential tolerance to herbivory in terms of seedling survival was of the order A. nilotica > A. nigrescens > F. albida, timing of shoot apex and cotyledon removal influenced seedling growth in terms of biomass and that shoot apex removal stimulated compensatory growth which is critical to seedling survival.  相似文献

To examine plastic willow regrowth response to herbivory, we studied the effect of a boring insect, the swift moth Endoclita excrescens (Hepialidae: Lepidoptera), which does not remove apical meristems, on shoot growth in three willow species—Salix gilgiana, S. eriocarpa, and S. serissaefolia−by direct observations and experiments in the field. We hypothesized that the stem-boring could initiate new lateral bud activation, and result in secondary shoot regrowth without the removal of the primary apical meristems. There were significantly more lateral shoots on naturally attacked than unattacked stems, and a significant positive correlation between lateral shoot density and the number of swift moth tunnels per tree was observed for all three willow species. Artificial boring, and larval infestation, resulted in an increase in the number of lateral shoots, but did not affect growth of current-year shoots. The length of lateral shoots differed between species, being significantly longer in S. gilgiana than S. eriocarpa and S. serissaefolia. The results of this study show that compensatory regrowth can result even if herbivory does not remove the apical meristem. We argue that this type of plant compensatory response is probably widespread, given that the stem-boring is a common feeding type of insect herbivores.  相似文献

A quantitative analysis of the 14C-labelled assimilate suppliedby the expanded leaves on the primary shoot to growing leaves, stem, lateral shoots (branches or stolons) and roots in redand white clover was conducted during vegetative growth. Stem growth of the primary shoot was inhibited in both cloversand utilized no energy resources. The growing leaves at theprimary shoot apex of white clover imported 4 per cent of theshoot's assimilate compared with 10 per cent in red clover. At the basal end of the primary shoot, the tap root of whiteclover imported 16 per cent of the shoot's assimilate comparedwith 22 per cent in red clover. Branches in red clover and stolonsin white clover were by far the largest sinks for primary shootassimilate, importing 39 per cent and 63 per cent of the labelledassimilate, respectively. Analyses of the translocation of assimilate from individualprimary shoot leaves demonstrated that in both clovers olderleaves exported more of their assimilate to branches or stolons, whereas younger leaves exported more of their assimilate toroots, and possibly in white clover, to growing leaves at thetip of the shoot. Of the labelled assimilate exported to branchesor stolons, each primary shoot leaf exported preferentiallyto the branch or stolon in its own axil, but in addition exportedsubstantial quantities of assimilate to all other axillary shoots, particularly those arising from basal axils where the subtendingleaf had died. Modern concepts of plant tolerance to herbivory are primarily based on studies of short‐term severe damage, whereas the effects of minor chronic damage to long‐lived woody plants, corresponding to background herbivory (2–15% annual loss of foliar biomass in boreal and temperate forests), remain poorly understood. In our experiment, the annual removal of 2, 4, 8 and 16% of the leaf area from naturally growing mountain birch Betula pubescens subsp. czerepanovii saplings during a seven‐year period resulted in a pronounced reduction of plant vertical growth (–30, –34, –45 and –78%, respectively). Leaf size decreased first (already after one year of the 16% treatment), resulting in the reduction of the total leaf area. This effect was followed by a considerable decrease in the length of long shoots in all treatments. Leaf number on the plant was maintained for a longer time, being reduced by the end of the experiment in 16% treatment only; no changes in specific leaf area or chlorophyll fluorescence were observed in either of the treatments. This pattern may indicate that the plant reallocates resources from the growth of the woody parts to the maintenance of the photosynthetic area, and can be seen as a strategy of tolerance to minor herbivory, whereas compensatory responses typical of severe herbivory (increased photosynthesis rates and shoot regrowth) have not been detected. The predicted 2–5% increase in background herbivory due to climate warming can potentially produce previously unrecognised negative impacts on tree growth. We conclude that in the long term, background herbivory is likely to impose stronger effects on the growth of woody plants than short‐term devastating outbreaks of defoliators, thus contributing more to the development of plant evolutionary adaptations to herbivory than severe but episodic bouts of damage.  相似文献

Backgrounds and Aims

Shoot demography affects the growth of the tree crown and the number of leaves on a tree. Masting may cause inter-annual and spatial variation in shoot demography of mature trees, which may in turn affect the resource budget of the tree. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of masting on the temporal and spatial variations in shoot demography of mature Betula grossa.

Methods

The shoot demography was analysed in the upper and lower parts of the tree crown in mature trees and saplings over 7 years. Mature trees and saplings were compared to differentiate the effect of masting from the effect of exogenous environment on shoot demography. The fate of different shoot types (reproductive, vegetative, short, long), shoot length and leaf area were investigated by monitoring and by retrospective survey using morphological markers on branches. The effects of year and branch position on demographic parameters were evaluated.

Key Results

Shoot increase rate, production of long shoots, bud mortality, length of long shoots and leaf area of a branch fluctuated periodically from year to year in mature trees over 7 years, in which two masting events occurred. Branches within a crown showed synchronized annual variation, and the extent of fluctuation was larger in the upper branches than the lower branches. Vegetative shoots varied in their bud differentiation each year and contributed to the dynamic shoot demography as much as did reproductive shoots, suggesting physiological integration in shoot demography through hormonal regulation and resource allocation.

Conclusions

Masting caused periodic annual variation in shoot demography of the mature trees and the effect was spatially variable within a tree crown. Since masting is a common phenomenon among tree species, annual variation in shoot demography and leaf area should be incorporated into resource allocation models of mature masting trees.  相似文献

Growth, morphology and leaf characteristics were assessed in late spring following simulated autumnal defoliation in second-year saplings of three Chinese subtropical evergreen tree species.Castanopsis fargesii showed strong compensatory growth in terms of plant biomass after removal of both 50 and 75% of leaf biomass and slight compensatory growth after 90% defoliation. DefoliatedC. fargesii saplings had more leaves per unit shoot length than non-defoliated saplings. New leaves on defoliated plants were smaller and had higher per area nitrogen content than new leaves on non-defoliated plants.Pinus massoniana andElaeocarpus japonicus showed strong and no compensatory growth, respectively, after 50% defoliation. The strong compensatory growth inP. massoniana andC. fargesii may partly explain why these species predominate in the early and late successional phases of evergreen broad-leaved forests  相似文献

Plant responses to herbivory include tolerance (i.e. compensatory growth) and defense. Several factors influence the tolerance of a plant following herbivory, including plant genetic identity, site nutrient availability, and previous and/or concurrent herbivory. We studied the effects of these factors on the compensatory response of Salix planifolia ssp. planifolia, a shrub species common in the boreal and subarctic regions of North America. We cloned several genets of S. planifolia and submitted them to simulated root and/or leaf herbivory while varying the nutrient availability. Simulated leaf herbivory was more detrimental to the plant than simulated root herbivory, reducing both above- and below-ground tissue production. Leaf demography was unaffected by either simulated herbivory treatment. There was some compensatory growth following simulated leaf and root herbivory, but only the root compartment responded to increased nutrient availability. Simulated leaf herbivory increased leaf transpiration and reduced stomatal resistance, suggesting increased carbon fixation. The unexpected finding of the experiment was the absence of interactions among factors (genotype, nutrient availability and type of tissue damage) on the compensatory response of S. planifolia. These factors thus have additive effects on the species' compensatory ability.  相似文献

Herbivore damage is known to cause the premature loss of mature leaves. However, the effects of herbivory on abscission during the early stages of leaf development remain unexplored, even though herbivores frequently prefer unlignified, immature leaves. In a field experiment, we removed 50% of the tissue from leaves at various stages of development on seedlings of Shorea hopeifolia (Dipterocarpaceae), a dominant rain forest tree in Indonesian Borneo. Four weeks following simulated herbivory, >88% of unlignified expanding leaves had been abscised, compared to only 20% of fully expanded, unlignified leaves and 0% of recently lignified, mature leaves. In a separate experiment over 9 wk, simulated herbivory did not increase abscission rates of mature leaves, even when 75% of leaf tissue was removed. Because most (58%) of S. hopeifolia seedlings under natural conditions had lost 1% or less of the tissue from their mature leaves, herbivore damage probably has little effect on the abscission of mature leaves. In contrast, the tendency for damaged expanding leaves to abscise may explain why 49% of S. hopeifolia seedlings had already lost their youngest leaf. If similar patterns occur in other species, herbivore attacks on developing leaves may contribute substantially to both leaf loss and the cumulative impact of herbivory on the growth and survival of whole plants.  相似文献

The effect of artificial shoot clipping on the vegetative growth and sexual reproduction of the evergreen bearberry, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, and the deciduous bog bilberry, Vaccinium uliginosum, was studied in the vicinity of a copper-nickel smelter in SW Finland. According to the research hypothesis, heavy metal induced shoot death breaks the apical dominance in the clones growing in a polluted environment. This causes activation of dormant axillary and adventitious buds and an increase in branching on the older parts of the stem. Regrowth after shoot death was studied by clipping off all the current-year shoots from experimental branches in autumn (1994) and spring (1995). Within-clone and between-clone control branches were used to test the data. Both species displayed a considerable ability to activate dormant meristems after the damage. Regrowth of the current shoots during the next growing season (1995) was about 80% compared to the within-clone control in both species after autumn clipping. Shoot clipping in early summer was more detrimental for both species, and the regrowth of A. uva-ursi was less than that of V. uliginosum. Differences in the storage reserves and source-sink mechanisms of carbon allocation between evergreen and deciduous species probably explain their distinct response. When the removed biomass was added to the living biomass of the branches, there was overcompensation in the total dry weight of A. uva-ursi after autumn clipping, and the weight was almost 90% of the control after spring clipping. The total dry weight of V. uliginosum also equalled that of the control when the removed biomass was added. No berries developed on either species in the year following the autumn treatment, because clipping removed all the flower buds. Spring clipping had no effect on the sexual reproduction of A. uva-ursi, but decreased the berry production of V. uliginosum. The degree of compensatory growth of both species was only slightly affected by the distance from the smelter. It is suggested that dormant bud activation, rapid regrowth and plastic branching contribute to the resistance mechanism to heavy metals.  相似文献
