Austrian black pine (Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), and maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Aiton) are commonly used in restoration practices in the Mediterranean base including Turkey. Direct seeding can secure desired level of tree establishment and survival on degraded sites wherever, favorable safe sites are scattered throughout the landscape. Glyphosate is a commonly used herbicide for weed control in forest, nursery and restoration sites worldwide, due to its broad-spectrum efficacy and considerably less toxicity on the environment compared to other chemicals. The present study screened the glyphosate phytotoxicity of three dominant pine species in Turkey during a seed germination trial, after seeds had been presoaked in 15 different dose-glyphosate solutions varying between 0 and 5%, v:v. Glyphosate applications damaged seed germination speed more than cumulative germination rate. As a systemic herbicide, glyphosate appeared highly phytotoxic to Austrian black pine. Scots pine showed an intermediate glyphosate phytotoxicity. Maritime pine was the least sensitive species, tolerating glyphosate at ≤1% doses. In conclusion, glyphosate may be used at low doses on restoration sites seeded with maritime pine while it is not recommended to be used on degraded sites seeded with Austrian black pine and Scots pine.  相似文献

Rifamycin-resistant derivatives of plant growth promotingBacilluspolymyxa strains L6, Pw-2, and S20 were used to evaluate theinteraction of bacterial–mycorrhizal co-inoculation onpine and spruce seedling growth. We were particularly interestedin determining if the mechanism by which bacteria stimulatedseedling growth depended on the presence of ectomycorrhizae.Mycorrhizal inoculum was introduced by adding 2ml of one ofsix forest floor soil types originating from different spruceand pine stands to seedling containers. Mycorrhizal roots developedin 34% of pine and 27% of spruce seedlings treated with forestsoil, but no differences between forest soils were detected.Most mycorrhizae were formed byWilcoxinasp. (E-strain) (98%for spruce and 67% for pine); small numbers ofAmphinema-like,Myceliumradicis atrovirens, Suillus-like,Thelephora-like, andTuber-likemycorrhizae were also found on pine (27% in total).Thelephora-likefungi comprised 2% of spruce mycorrhize. In the absence of bacterialinoculum, spruce seedling biomass was positively correlatedwith the number of mycorrhizal root tips, but this trend wasnot detected in spruce inoculated with bacteria or in pine.Bacterial inoculation did not influence the mycorrhizal statusof seedlings, but all threeBacillusstrains stimulated growthof both conifer species. Root biomass, in particular, was significantlyenhanced by up to 18% compared with uninoculated controls. Mycorrhizalfungi improved the growth of spruce seedlings, but plant growthpromotion byBacilluswas similar for mycorrizal and non-mycorrhizalseedlings of both species. Our results suggest thatBacillusstrainsL6-16R, Pw-2R, and S20-R enhance conifer seedling growth througha mechanism unrelated to mycorrhizal fungi. Austrian pine (Pinus nigra) and red pine (P resinosa) were testedfor needle damage caused by salt spray. Morphology and histologyof newly grown needles were compared in 3- and 6-year-old plantsgrowing in the greenhouse under controlled conditions. Pottedplants covered with plastic bags were sprayed daily either withdistilled H2O or saturated salt solution. Needle tips, mid-partsand bases were fixed after 1, 3 and 24 h, and 3, 7 and 30 din glutaraldehyde+0·1 % caffeine for precipitation ofphenolics. Histochemical reactions and electron microscope observationsshowed that the morphological damage is linked to increasedphenolic compound deposition in mesophyll cells, beginning directlyunder the stomata. Disorganization of membranes leads to deathof the mesophyll cells, even before morphological damage isrecognizable as brown spots on the needle surface. Thus thehistochemical reactions and observations of cell structure revealeddamage earlier than macroscopic observations. Fire modifies the germination of seeds of numerous species. One of the fire factors that cause these modifications is the ash. This study analysed the germination of seeds of Pinus sylvestris L., Pinus nigra Arn. Pinus radiata D. Don and Pinus pinaster Aiton, subjected to different ash treatments, and the development of seedlings that grew in these conditions for 14 weeks. We obtained the ash by completely burning leaves and small twigs from the most abundant woody species in populations of pines. The ash treatments applied were as follows: Control (without ash), Low (half of the amount registered in a fire), Medium (equal to the amount registered in a fire) and High (double the amount registered in a fire). Germination took place on paper inside Petri dishes and in soil, and growth was only analysed for the plants that grew in the soil. For all species, and especially P. nigra, germination rate decreased as the amount of ash applied increased. The negative effects of the ash were more apparent following treatments in Petri dishes than in the soil. In the dishes, the average germination time varies little between the four species of pine. In soil, the average germination time is more prolonged, and only some differences were observed between treatments in P. sylvestris and P. nigra. In these species the high treatment significantly increased the average germination time. We found a greater sensitivity of P. sylvestris and P. nigra to the addition of ash, showing a higher seedling mortality rate. However, it appears that seedling development (length and weight) was not affected in any of the species through the addition of ash. These tests allow us to deduce that, in P. sylvestris, P. nigra, P. radiata and P. pinaster, the ash produced by forest fires has an inhibiting effect on germination and little effect on the development of seedlings in the first months of life. This paper contains the data for the gross weight and relativeproportions of canopy, bole, and roots in a series of twelveeven-aged forest stands. From these it is possible to describe the growth curves of treesof Pinus sylvestris in Britain under the observed conditionsand the production of dry matter per unit area of such standsof trees. The following general results are given: regressionsrelating weight to bole, height, and diameter; the relativegrowth of leaves, roots, and bole; annual increments of drymatter; relative growth-rates per unit leaf area or per unitdry weight per annum. Boletus edulis is a well-known ectomycorrhizal mushroom. Although cultivation has been widely attempted, no artificial fruiting has been achieved owing to difficulties associated with mycorrhizal synthesis and acclimatization in fields. We collected fifteen B. edulis basidiomata samples from locations in Japan and identified them microscopically and by phylogenetic analysis of their nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Pure culture isolates of B. edulis were established efficiently on malt extract agar medium, and one isolate, EN-63, was inoculated to axenic Pinus densiflora seedlings in vitro. Brownish ectomycorrhizal tips were observed on the pine lateral roots within four months of inoculation. Ten pine seedlings that formed ectomycorrhizae were acclimatized under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. At four months after transplant, mycorrhizal colonization by B. edulis was observed on newly grown root tips under laboratory conditions, but no B. edulis ectomycorrhiza survived under greenhouse conditions. These results suggest that B. edulis ectomycorrhizae synthesized in vitro with P. densiflora requires additional steps for acclimatization to greenhouse conditions.  相似文献

The role of ectomycorrhizal fungi on mineral nutrient mobilization and uptake is crucial for tree nutrition and growth in temperate forest ecosystems. By using a “mineral weathering budget” approach, this study aims to quantify the effect of the symbiosis with the ectomycorrhizal model strain Laccaria bicolor S238N on mineral weathering and tree nutrition, carrying out a column experiment with a quartz/biotite substrate. Each column was planted with one Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) non-mycorrhizal or mycorrhizal with L. bicolor, with exception of the abiotic control treatment. The columns were continuously supplied with a nutrient-poor solution. A mineral weathering budget was calculated for K and Mg. The pine shoot growth was significantly increased (73%) when plants were mycorrhizal with L. bicolor. Whatever their mycorrhizal status, pines increased mineral weathering by factors 1.5 to 2.1. No difference between non-mycorrhizal and mycorrhizal pine treatments was revealed, however, mycorrhizal pines assimilated significantly more K and Mg. This suggests that in our experimental conditions, L. bicolor S238N improved shoot growth and K and Mg assimilation in Scots pine mainly by increasing the uptake of dissolved nutrients, linked to a better exploration and exploitation of the soil by the mycorrhizal roots.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands cover large areas in the Lusatian and the Middle German lignite mining districts. Due to adverse chemical substrate conditions, the root systems of the trees are restricted to the ameliorated top-spoil and the organic forest floor layers. To investigate functioning of fine root systems under the prevailing site factors, we studied mycorrhizal colonization rate and frequency as well as mycorrhizal diversity, vitality and growth phases in Scots pine ecosystems along a chronosequence in both mining districts. Mycorrhizal rate was close to 100% in both districts. Mycorrhizal abundance was higher in the organic forest floor layer than the mineral soil layer. In total, 25 morphotypes were recorded. Diversity differed between the districts. The mycorrhizae of Amphinema byssoides, Tuber puberulum, Pinirhiza discolor, Pinirhiza cf. bicolorata and E-type were present in both mining areas. These morphotypes are typical of nutrient-rich soils with high pH values. Compared with the undisturbed sites, vitality of mycorrhizae was very high at the test sites on spoil substrate, correlating with the high growth dynamics of mycorrhizae at recultivation sites. A relatively high carbon flow to the mycorrhizal root systems at these sites seems likely. Thus, mycorrhizal root systems are able to cope with the ameliorated top-spoil and the organic layer. The main reason for the adaptation is the large number of ectomycorrhizal fungal species available in this area where Pinus sylvestris is indigenous.  相似文献

Recently, ergosterol analysis has been used to quantify viable fungal biomass in resynthesized ectomycorrhizae. An objective of our study was to quantify ergosterol in a range of ectomycorrhizal isolates under differing growth conditions. In addition, we tested the applicability of the method on field-collected roots of ectomycorrhizal and vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal plants. Quantification of sitosterol as a biomass indicator of plant roots was also undertaken. Ergosterol was not detected in roots of uninoculated Betula populifolia seedlings, and sitosterol was not detected in an ectomycorrhizal fungal isolate but was present in birch roots. Ergosterol was produced in all isolates examined, which represented the major orders of ectomycorrhizal fungi. The range of values obtained, from 3 to nearly 18 g ergosterol mg-1 dry mass, agrees well with reported values for other mycorrhizal and decomposer fungi. Hyphal ergosterol was the same during growth on phytic acid and KH2PO4. Reduction of growth temperature from 25° C to 15° C had little effect on ergosterol content of cultures harvested at similar growth stages. Ergosterol and sitosterol were detected in field-collected ectomycorrhizae of B. populifolia and Pinus sylvestris and VA mycorrhizae of Acer rubrum and Plantago major. Both ergosterol content and ergosterol to sitosterol ratios were significantly lower in VA mycorrhizae than ectomycorrhizae. Calculations of viable fungal biomass associated with field-collected roots were in agreement with those reported by others using the method on resynthesized ectomycorrhizae. Estimates of total mass could be obtained for field-collected B. populifolia roots by a simultaneously using ergosterol to estimate fungal biomass and sitosterol to estimate root mass. Some potential applications and limitations of sterol quantification in studies of mycorrhizal physiology and ecology are discussed.  相似文献

Growth analysis and photosynthesis measurements were carriedout on first-year seedlings of Pinus radiata, P. contorta, andP. nigra. P. sylvestris was also included in two growth-analysisexperiments. There appeared to be no difference in relativegrowth-rate (RGR) between the species mentioned, except betweenP. radiata and P. nigra. It was found that when the level ofmineral nutrition was high, P. radiata had a higher RGR thanP. nigra and that the reverse was true at low mineral nutrientlevels. There was no difference in net assimilation rate (NAR)between the species, but NAR appeared to increase and decreasewith mineral nutrient supply. Net photosynthesis per unit of leaf was somewhat higher in P.radiata than in P. contorta; P. nigra had a lower photosyntheticrate than either P. radiata or P. contorta.  相似文献

In contrast to earlier beliefs, it is now known that boron (B)can be retranslocated complexed with sugar alcohols in someplant species. Conifers had been thought not to translocatesugar alcohols in the phloem. Decomposition dynamics in leaves and needles of two Mediterraneanshrubs and two pine species growing in the Sierra de Filabres(Almería, Spain) was investigated during 2 years usingthe litter bag technique. The species studied are representativeof the vegetation of the study area and differ greatly in theirfoliar traits. Results are discussed in relation to the initiallitter quality (C, N and P) and through the application of theexponential decay model. The mass lost at the end of study variedin the order: Pinus pinaster < Pinus nigra < Cistus laurifolius< Adenocarpus decorticans. Differences in annual rates ofdecomposition among species are consistent with the particularchemical and structural attributes of their leaves. The massof decomposing litter remaining after 2 years was positivelyassociated with the initial C:N ratio. Weight loss and nutrientrelease were fastest in the leguminous A. decorticans. The resultssuggest the importance of both structure and elemental concentrationof initial litter for decomposition dynamics in Mediterraneanspecies. The frost hardiness (FH) of mycorrhizal [ectomycorrhizal (ECM)] and non-mycorrhizal (NM) Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings was studied to assess whether mycorrhizal symbiosis affected the roots’ tolerance of below-zero temperatures. ECM (Hebeloma sp.) and NM seedlings were cultivated in a growth chamber for 18 weeks. After 13 weeks’ growth in long-day and high-temperature (LDHT) conditions, a half of the ECM and NM seedlings were moved into a chamber with short-day and low-temperature (SDLT) conditions to cold acclimate. After exposures to a range of below-zero temperatures, the FH of the roots was assessed by means of the relative electrolyte leakage test. The FH was determined as the inflection point of the temperature-response curve. No significant difference was found between the FH of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal roots in LDHT (?8.9 and ?9.8 °C) or SDLT (?7.5 and ?6.8 °C). The mycorrhizal treatment had no significant effect on the total dry mass, the allocation of dry mass among the roots and needles or nutrient accumulation. The mycorrhizal treatment with Hebeloma sp. did not affect the FH of Scots pine in this experimental setup. More information is needed on the extent to which mycorrhizas tolerate low temperatures, especially with different nutrient contents and different mycorrhiza fungi.  相似文献

Spatial distribution of ethylene production by individual currentyear needles and the relationship with peroxidase activity wasstudied along a shoot of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestrisL.). Muchvariation in ethylene production between and within individualseedlings was found. There was a significant difference in meanintensity of ethylene production between orthostichies withinindividual seedlings. The capacity of individual needles toconvert 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) to ethylenedid not correlate with the basal rate of ethylene production.Mean ethylene production intensity by orthostichies correlatedpositively with mean peroxidase activity. A positive correlationbetween the intensity of ethylene production by individual needlesand detachment-induced peroxidase activity was found. Aim The rate of grassland invasion by trees depends on the ability of the species to invade, i.e. their invasiveness, and on the susceptibility of the environments to invasion, i.e. their invasibility. Knowledge of the invasiveness of native and introduced tree species and of the environmental factors that contribute to invasibility is necessary to understand landscape evolution and assess required management measures. Our main aim was to explore this by estimating the separate effects of propagule pressure and environmental factors on the spatio‐temporal patterns of sapling recruitment, a key stage in the tree life cycle. Location Causse Mejean calcareous plateau (southern France). Methods The effects of seed supply and environmental variables (grazing, geological substrate, and duration or intensity of drought) on the spatio‐temporal patterns of sapling recruitment were assessed for the native Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and the introduced black pine (Pinus nigra Arn. ssp. nigra). Estimates were derived by inverse modelling with data of locations and ages of 4‐ to 20‐year‐old saplings and seed‐bearing trees in 32 sites. Yearly indices of drought were derived from a soil–water content model. Results For both species, seed supply was as important as the whole set of environmental factors in explaining sapling recruitment rates. Grazing and the duration of drought from July to August decreased sapling recruitment rates, which were also lower on hard limestone than on dolomite. Dispersal distances and effective fecundities were higher for the introduced P. nigra, which was less susceptible to drought but more affected by grazing than the native P. sylvestris. In grazed grasslands, shrubs facilitated sapling establishment of both species. Main conclusions This study shows how seed supply and environmental factors shape spatio‐temporal patterns of sapling recruitment for trees invading grasslands. Implications for landscape evolution and management, of the difference in invasiveness of the two pine species and of the hierarchy of environmental factors in determining invasibility, are discussed.  相似文献

Studies on the Nitrogen Metabolism in Ectomycorrhizae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Free and bound amino acids in the mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal root systems of Pinus nigra Arnold and Corylus avellna L. grown under semi-natural conditions were analyzed through automatic amino acid analyzers. Tuber brumale Vitt. and T. melanosporum Vitt. were the respective fungal symbionts. Arginine and citrulline were found to accumulate in large quantities in the free pool of the uninoculated P. nigra and C. avellana root systems respectively. In the mycorrhizal root systems these substances decreased in their levels with a parallel increase in the concentrations of glutamine and asparagine. Implications of these changes are discussed with reference to ectomycorrhizae. In general the majority of the identified free amino acids were found in larger concentrations in both the types of mycorrhizal root systems. Results obtained suggested that this may not be due to proteolysis but due to increased biosynthesis. Possible interrelationships in ectomycorrhizal root systems with reference to nitrogen metabolism are presented in the form of a scheme.  相似文献

The uptake of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and structural changesinduced in the needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlingswere studied. Two exposure set-ups, a root route and an atmosphericroute through the surfaces simulating the wet deposition offog, were used. Both set-ups included two dose levels and correspondingcontrol treatments. The temperature and the relative humidityin the climate chambers were adjusted to represent the conditionsof June–July in a subarctic area in central Finland. Theseedlings were exposed three times a week for two months. Theresults showed that the uptake of TCA in needles occurred bothvia roots and via needle surface. However, most of the TCA viathe atmospheric route was absorbed on the surface of the needles.The structural responses in pine needles depended partly onthe treatment method: TCA applied via the atmospheric routedisintegrated the structures of the epicuticular waxes and thatof the stomatal cells, which was not seen in the exposures viaroots. A common feature was the decrease in size of the chloroplastsin concert with the increasing TCA concentrations inside theneedles. Shrubs are commonly considered competitors of planted seedlings in reforestation programs. However, shrubs can facilitate the establishment of understory seedlings in environments that, like Mediterranean‐type ecosystems, are characterized by harsh environmental conditions. In 1997, an experiment was set up in the Sierra Nevada mountains (southeast Spain) to test the use of shrubs as nurse plants for an alternative reforestation technique. Two‐year‐old seedlings of Pinus sylvestris and Pinus nigra were planted in four microhabitats: (1) open interspaces without vegetation (which is the usual method employed in reforestation programs), (2) under individuals of the shrub Salvia lavandulifolia, (3) under the north side of spiny shrubs, and (4) under the south side of spiny shrubs. Seedlings were also distributed in plots with and without ungulates to test the effect of herbivore damage. We report here the results of survival and growth after four growing seasons, a time span long enough to draw robust conclusions concerning the suitability of this technique. Pine survival was remarkably higher when planted under individuals of S. lavandulifolia as compared with open areas (2.6 times for P. sylvestris and 1.8 for P. nigra). The survival of both pine species was also higher when planted on the north side of spiny shrubs, while mortality on the south side was similar to that found in open areas. The reduction of solar radiation by the canopy of shrubs was likely the main factor determining shrub facilitation. The growth of the pines differed among years. However, growth was not inhibited when planted with shrubs as compared with open areas in any of the years. Herbivore damage was low but was mostly concentrated in the leader shoot, exacerbating the deleterious effect of ungulate herbivores on pine growth. We conclude that the use of shrubs as nurse plants for reforestation is a viable technique to increase establishment success of reforestation in Mediterranean‐type ecosystems and that it might be similarly useful in other water‐stressed environments. Summary A method for in vitro synthesis of mycorrhizae on coniferous tree seedlings is described. Tree seedlings (Larix decidua Mill., Picea abies (L.) Karst, and Pinus sylvestris L.) and fungi Amanita muscaria (L. ex Fr.) Hooker, Piloderma croceum Erikss. et Hjorst., Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker et Couch, and Suillus grevillei (Klotzsch) Singer were maintained under sterile conditions in petri dishes. Typical ectomycorrhizae were established within 2–3 weeks after inoculation and within 2 months after germination of seedlings. Eventually a high percentage of mycorrhizal root tips was obtained.  相似文献

Dendroprovenancing studies frequently use site chronologies to identify the origin of archaeological and historical timber. However, radial growth (tree-ring width, TRW) of tree species is influenced by both local and regional climate scales. Here we investigate how the use of annually-resolved Blue Intensity (BI) measurements can enhance dendroprovenancing precision of black pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) and Scots pine (P. sylvestris L.) on the Iberian Peninsula. Principal Component Gradient Analyses (PCGA) was used to assess geographical patterns of annual variation in different TRW and BI proxies of pine trees from two mountain ranges in the Central System and Andalusia in Spain. Local climate-growth relationships were quantified to identify underlying causes of identified groups with diverse growth patterns. Two distinct elevational groups were observed when performing PCGA on latewood BI time series with the response to summer drought as the main factor causing the differences. Both P. nigra and P. sylvestris BI time series were found to be more related to summer drought at low-elevation sites showing an increase in sensitivity at lower latitudes. PCGA of TRW time series allowed to discriminate between trees from Andalusia and Central System within the elevation groups. February and October temperatures were found to be the main climatic factors causing the differences in TRW time series among the high- elevation sites, whereas for low-elevation trees it was the average winter temperature influencing TRW. A subsequent leave-one-out analyses confirmed that including latewood BI time series improves the precision of dendroprovenancing of pine wood in the Iberian Peninsula.  相似文献
