Males of Mygalopsis markiBailey (Tettigoniidae: Orthoptera) alter the temporal structure of their song in response to other competing males. The song of males calling in aggregations has a high variance in the number of syllables per chirp, with short intervals between each chirp. In contrast, the temporal pattern of the song of isolated males is more evenly spaced, with an increase in length of the interchirp intervals and low variance in the number of syllables per chirp. In order to simulate a calling male moving closer to a male in an aggregation, a playback technique was adopted whereby the recorded calling song of a male was presented to itself via a loudspeaker in increments of 2dB. The change in song pattern of the resident male involved a reduction in the number of syllables per chirp and an increase in the interchirp interval, with the number of chirps per second remaining constant. This reduction in the output of the song, instead of not calling as a result of an acoustic contest, may still allow males to continue calling for females.  相似文献

PurposeThis technical note presents an in-house phantom with a specially designed contrast-object module constructed to address the need for three-dimensional rotational angiography (3DRA) testing.MethodsThe initial part of the study was a brief evaluation on the commercially available phantom used for 3DRA and computed tomography angiography (CTA) to confirm the need for a special phantom for 3D angiography. Once confirmed, an in-house phantom was constructed. The novel phantom was tested to evaluate the basic image performance metrics, i.e., unsharpness (MTF) and noise characterization (NPS), as well as to show its capability for vessel contrast visibility study.ResultsThe low contrast objects in the commercially available tools dedicated for CT is found to yield significantly lower signal difference to noise ratio (SDNR) when used for 3DRA, therefore deemed inadequate for 3DRA contrast evaluation. The constructed in-house phantom demonstrates a capability to serve for basic imaging performance check (MTF, NPS, and low contrast evaluation) for 3DRA and CTA. With higher and potentially adjustable visibility of contrast objects as artificial vessels, the in-house phantom also makes more clinically relevant tests, e.g., human- or model observer study and task-based optimization, possible.ConclusionThe novel phantom with special contrast object module shows higher visibility in 3DRA compared to the currently available commercial phantom and, therefore, is recommended for use in 3D angiography.  相似文献

PurposeTo demonstrate a method of simulating mammography images of the CDMAM phantom and to investigate the coefficient of variation (CoV) in the threshold gold thickness (tT) measurements associated with use of the phantom.MethodsThe noise and sharpness of Hologic Dimensions and GE Essential mammography systems were characterized to provide data for the simulation. The simulation method was validated by comparing the tT results of real and simulated images of the CDMAM phantom for three different doses and the two systems. The detection matrices produced from each of 64 images using CDCOM software were randomly resampled to create 512 sets of 8, 16 and 32 images to estimate the CoV of tT. Sets of simulated images for a range of doses were used to estimate the CoVs for a range of diameters and threshold thicknesses.ResultsNo significant differences were found for tT or the CoV between real and simulated CDMAM images. It was shown that resampling from 256 images was required for estimating the CoV. The CoV was around 4% using 16 images for most of the phantom but is over double that for details near the edge of the phantom.ConclusionsWe have demonstrated a method to simulate images of the CDMAM phantom for different systems at a range of doses. We provide data for calculating uncertainties in tT. Any future review of the European guidelines should take into consideration the calculated uncertainties for the 0.1 mm detail.  相似文献

X-ray computed tomography (CT) images obtained with a kilo-voltage (kV) on-board imaging (OBI) system improve the accuracy of patient setup and treatment planning. The use of iterative reconstruction techniques (IRTs) for CT imaging can also reduce radiation dose compared to analytic reconstruction techniques. Despite these improvements, the image quality varies with IRTs, and the noise structure of reconstructed images can be distorted by IRTs. In this study, the noise properties and spatial resolution of the images reconstructed by IRTs were evaluated in terms of conventional noise metrics, high-order statistics, noise spectral density (NSD) and modulation transfer function (MTF) at different radiation doses. A kV OBI system mounted on a Varian Trilogy machine and a CATPHAN600 phantom were used to obtain projections, and the projections were reconstructed by Feldkamp (FDK), algebraic reconstruction technique (ART), maximum-likelihood expectation–maximization (MLEM) and total variation (TV) minimization algorithms. The reconstructed images were compared according to mean, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis, NSD and MTF at different radiation doses. The results demonstrated that the noise properties and spatial resolution of reconstructed images depend on the type of IRT and the radiation dose. The noise structures are altered by IRTs and can be characterized by high-order statistics and NSD, as well as conventional noise metrics. In conclusion, high-order statistics and NSD should be considered in order to provide detailed information for the images reconstructed by IRTs. Also, trade-off among noise properties, spatial resolution and contrast is important to optimize image quality obtained using IRTs.  相似文献

A patient’s position changes in every CBCT scan despite patient alignment protocols. However, there have been studies to determine image quality differences when an object is located at the center of the field of view (FOV). To evaluate changes in the image quality of the CBCT scan according to different object positions, the image quality indexes of the Alphard 3030 (Alphard Roentgen Ind., Ltd., Kyoto, Japan) and the Rayscan Symphony (RAY Ind., Ltd., Suwon, Korea) were measured using the Quart DVT_AP phantom at the center of the FOV and 6 peripheral positions under four types of exposure conditions. Anterior, posterior, right, left, upper, and lower positions 1 cm offset from the center of the FOV were used for the peripheral positions. We evaluated and compared the voxel size, homogeneity, contrast to noise ratio (CNR), and the 10% point of the modulation transfer function (MTF10%) of the center and periphery. Because the voxel size, which is determined by the Nyquist frequency, was within tolerance, other image quality indexes were not influenced by the voxel size. For the CNR, homogeneity, and MTF10%, there were peripheral positions which showed considerable differences with statistical significance. The average difference between the center and periphery was up to 31.27% (CNR), 70.49% (homogeneity), and 13.64% (MTF10%). Homogeneity was under tolerance at some of the peripheral locations. Because the CNR, homogeneity, and MTF10% were significantly affected by positional changes of the phantom, an object’s position can influence the interpretation of follow up CBCT images. Therefore, efforts to locate the object in the same position are important.  相似文献

PurposeTo assess the quality of images obtained on a dual energy computed tomography (CT) scanner.MethodsImage quality was assessed on a 64 detector-row fast kVp-switching dual energy CT scanner (Revolution GSI, GE Medical Systems). The Catphan phantom and a low contrast resolution phantom were employed. Acquisitions were performed at eight different radiation dose levels that ranged from 9 mGy to 32 mGy. Virtual monochromatic spectral images (VMI) were reconstructed in the 40–140 keV range using all available kernels and iterative reconstruction (IR) at four different blending levels. Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) curves, image noise, image contrast, noise power spectrum and contrast to noise ratio were assessed.ResultsIn-plane spatial resolution at the 10% of the MTF curve was 0.60 mm−1. In-plane spatial resolution was not modified with VMI energy and IR blending level. Image noise was reduced from 16.6 at 9 mGy to 6.7 at 32 mGy, while peak frequency remained within 0.14 ± 0.01 mm−1. Image noise was reduced from 14.3 at IR 10% to 11.5 at IR 50% at a constant peak frequency. The lowest image noise and maximum peak frequency were recorded at 70 keV.ConclusionsOur results have shown how objective image quality is varied when different levels of radiation dose and different settings in IR are applied. These results provide CT operators an in depth understanding of the imaging performance characteristics in dual energy CT.  相似文献

Defining a male trait in relation to female preference is an important step towards determining the role that female preference has played in the evolution of a male trait. The pigment pattern 'vertical bars' is a complex male trait that functions as a sexual signal in swordtail fishes. A previous study suggested that X. cortezi females had a preference for males with more vertical bars. In that study, however, bar number had been reduced on the stimulus males by removing the most posterior bars, which changed the distance over which the bars spanned, in addition to changing bar number. To determine whether X. cortezi females have a preference for greater bar span and/or number of bars, we tested for female preference in two experiments. First, we gave females a choice between males with a greater bar span or a smaller bar span, holding bar number and total pigmented area constant. Females spent significantly more time with the males with the smaller bar span. This result, together with results from the previous study, suggest that females do not assess bar span alone, but possibly a composite component of the bars, such as bar frequency (number of bars/bar span). Secondly, we gave females a choice between six thinner bars or one wider bar of equal pigmented area. The six-bar treatment had a greater bar span in addition to more bars. We detected no preference for either treatment. These results suggest that the previously detected preference for more bars may actually reflect a preference for greater pigmented area. Finally, we present data on natural variation in the bars for X. cortezi and use principal components analysis to provide a composite definition of this trait.  相似文献

To improve the quality of ultrasound strain imaging, chirp-coded pulse excitation which can enhance echo signal-to-noise ratio (eSNR) was used. The effects of various factors on chirp-coded strain imaging were investigated. Five chirp schemes were designed to investigate the relationship of the range side lobe level (RSLL), main lobe width and energy for strain imaging. We use phase zero method with amplitude modulation correction as strain estimator. The simulation results demonstrate that elastographic signal-to-noise ratio (SNRe) for chirp pulse decreases with the RSLL and the main lobe width, and that there is a tradeoff among choosing a high-energy tapering window function, reducing the RSLL and narrowing the main lobe in designing a chirp scheme for strain imaging. Chirp pulse performs much better than conventional short pulse in low eSNR, great depth or high attenuation conditions due to the increased eSNR with it. However, in high eSNR condition, the increased eSNR with chirp pulse does not improve SNRe, and the performance of chirp pulse mainly depends on the RSLL and main lobe width. Some chirp schemes still achieve higher SNRe than short pulse in high eSNR condition, because these chirp schemes have narrower main lobe than short pulse and have very low RSLL. Chirp pulse has better lesion detectability and axial strain resolution than short pulse especially in low eSNR condition, because chirp pulse can use shorter window length to get the same SNRe that is achieved by short pulse. Within the scope of five window functions (Tukey, Lanczos, Parzen, Dolph–Chebyshev and Kaiser), we tried to find the optimal chirp scheme which is possibly the combination of chirp pulse excitation with 40% tapered Tukey window and matched compression filter. A commercial elastic phantom experiment on a freehand strain imaging system further validates the superior performance of chirp pulse.  相似文献

Precise positioning of source and dosimeters is essential in the experimental determination of dosimetric characteristics of brachytherapy sources. Various near-water equivalent solid phantoms have been used to achieve the necessary precision in the positioning. However, the uncertainties in their chemical compositions may lead to non-negligible uncertainties in the determined doses. It is proposed here that ice may be used as an alternative to the conventional solid phantoms, since its chemical composition is identical to water while the positioning advantage associated with solid phantoms is retained. In this work, the feasibility of using ice as a solid phantom for brachytherapy dosimetry is investigated. Ice-to-water conversion factors are calculated at distances of 0.2–10 cm from the source, for six high- and low-energy photon-emitting brachytherapy sources and mono-energetic photons between 10 keV to 2.0 MeV. Practical issues and challenges associated with measuring dose in an ice phantom are discussed.  相似文献

Multi-slat prompt-gamma camera is a promising tool for range monitoring during proton therapy. We report the results of a comprehensive simulation study analyzing the precision which is possible to reach with this camera in determination of the position of the distal edge of the Bragg peak. For the first time we include simulation of optical photons. The proton beam (single pencil beam, 130 MeV, 10 ns bunch period, total of 1·108 protons) is interacting with a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom, which is a cylinder of 200 mm in diameter and length. The prompt gamma rays generated in the phantom are collimated with a multi-slat collimator and detected using a combination of yttrium aluminum perovskite (YAP) scintillators, installed in the collimator apertures, and light sensors. Two scintillator packing schemes, with one and with two scintillator plates per aperture, are considered. The collimator configuration (the septal thickness, aperture and height), resulting in the best precision, is determined using two methods of detector optimization. Precision of 2.1 mm (full width at half maximum) in the edge position determination is demonstrated.

Variability in the chirp rate of the male song of the ephippigerine speciesEphippigerida taeniata during intraspecific communication was investigated in the laboratory. Conspecific chirps were used as auditory stimuli. The stimulus rate was controlled by computer. Experiments were carried out at 19, 27, and 35°C. Acoustically isolated males ofE. taeniata sang with a relatively constant chirp rate, which depended on the ambient temperature. Chirp rate significantly increased with rising temperature from 19 to 27°C, whereas at 35°C the chirp rate did not differ significantly from that at 27°C. Male chirp rates were affected by stimulus rates. Males significantly increased their chirp rate in response to increasing stimulus rates at temperatures of 19 and 27°C. At 35°C the increase in the chirp rate was not significant. At 27 and 35°C males sang with a higher chirp rate than the stimulus rate within a certain range. Evaluating stimulus and response chirp pattern when the males increased their chirp rate in response to the stimulus rate showed that an alternation pattern was established. More than 50% of the male chirps occurred at a characteristic time range at around 40% of the interstimulus interval, which was slightly affected by temperature.  相似文献

We systematically determined which spectrotemporal modulations in speech are necessary for comprehension by human listeners. Speech comprehension has been shown to be robust to spectral and temporal degradations, but the specific relevance of particular degradations is arguable due to the complexity of the joint spectral and temporal information in the speech signal. We applied a novel modulation filtering technique to recorded sentences to restrict acoustic information quantitatively and to obtain a joint spectrotemporal modulation transfer function for speech comprehension, the speech MTF. For American English, the speech MTF showed the criticality of low modulation frequencies in both time and frequency. Comprehension was significantly impaired when temporal modulations <12 Hz or spectral modulations <4 cycles/kHz were removed. More specifically, the MTF was bandpass in temporal modulations and low-pass in spectral modulations: temporal modulations from 1 to 7 Hz and spectral modulations <1 cycles/kHz were the most important. We evaluated the importance of spectrotemporal modulations for vocal gender identification and found a different region of interest: removing spectral modulations between 3 and 7 cycles/kHz significantly increases gender misidentifications of female speakers. The determination of the speech MTF furnishes an additional method for producing speech signals with reduced bandwidth but high intelligibility. Such compression could be used for audio applications such as file compression or noise removal and for clinical applications such as signal processing for cochlear implants.  相似文献

A simple method is described for the determination of polypeptides and proteins in polyacrylamide gels after isoelectric focusing. Precipitates formed in trichloroacetic acid, under controlled conditions, are quantified densitometrically by measuring the proportion of light scattered. The procedure is of particular value in its applicability to smaller polypeptides, with mol.wts. of 3000-6000, which are not fixed adequately in gels by other procedures currently in use. The working range, over which polypeptide concentration is proportional to the effective absorbance, is approx. 1-30 microgram per component.  相似文献

Summary Phosphorus (H3P32O4) absorption was studied in detached bean leaves and leaf discs and later computed per unit surface area and per unit edge length vis-a-vis discs of 4–18 mm diameters. Not only absorption through edge predominantly contributed to total disc absorption it was also directly proportional to disc diameter. Part of the work carried out during senior author's (BKG) tenure as IAEA expert at Bogota.  相似文献

PurposeBased on the guidelines from “Report 87: Radiation Dose and Image-quality Assessment in Computed Tomography” of the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU), a software framework for automated quantitative image quality analysis was developed and its usability for a variety of scientific questions demonstrated.MethodsThe extendable framework currently implements the calculation of the recommended Fourier image quality (IQ) metrics modulation transfer function (MTF) and noise-power spectrum (NPS), and additional IQ quantities such as noise magnitude, CT number accuracy, uniformity across the field-of-view, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of simulated lesions for a commercially available cone-beam phantom. Sample image data were acquired with different scan and reconstruction settings on CT systems from different manufacturers.ResultsSpatial resolution is analyzed in terms of edge-spread function, line-spread-function, and MTF. 3D NPS is calculated according to ICRU Report 87, and condensed to 2D and radially averaged 1D representations. Noise magnitude, CT numbers, and uniformity of these quantities are assessed on large samples of ROIs. Low-contrast resolution (CNR, SNR) is quantitatively evaluated as a function of lesion contrast and diameter. Simultaneous automated processing of several image datasets allows for straightforward comparative assessment.ConclusionsThe presented framework enables systematic, reproducible, automated and time-efficient quantitative IQ analysis. Consistent application of the ICRU guidelines facilitates standardization of quantitative assessment not only for routine quality assurance, but for a number of research questions, e.g. the comparison of different scanner models or acquisition protocols, and the evaluation of new technology or reconstruction methods.  相似文献

At the Hamburg-Eppendorf Hospital neutron facilities the relative biological effectiveness (r.b.e.) of d,T-neutrons was determined with respect to survival of mouse intestinal crypts. (CBA/Rij x C57BL/Rij)F1 mice were irradiated to the whole body at different depths inside a tissue-equivalent phantom. Irradiations were carried out with a collimated neutron beam at about 6 rad/min given in single doses ranging from 450 to 1000 rad. For reference, gamma-rays from a 60Co therapy unit were used. The number of surviving intestinal crypts per circumference of the jejunum was determined 3 1/2 days after irradiation according to the method of Withers and Elkind. The number of surviving stem cells was calculated on the basis of Poisson statistics. The doses necessary to reduce survival to ten crypt stem cells per circumference amounted to 689 +/- 19 rad for neutrons and 1449 +/- 29 rad for 60Co gamma-rays. From these figures an r.b.e. of 2 . 1 +/- 0 . 1 is obtained. Measurements at different depths in the phantom did not show any variation of r.b.e. with depth along the axis of the neutron beam.  相似文献

In attempts to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of spinal injuries and spinal deformities, several experimental and numerical studies have been conducted to understand the biomechanical behavior of the spine. However, numerical biomechanical studies suffer from uncertainties associated with hard- and soft-tissue anatomies. Currently, these parameters are identified manually on each mesh model prior to simulations. The determination of soft connective tissues on finite element meshes can be a tedious procedure, which limits the number of models used in the numerical studies to a few instances. In order to address these limitations, an image-based method for automatic morphing of soft connective tissues has been proposed. Results showed that the proposed method is capable to accurately determine the spatial locations of predetermined bony landmarks. The present method can be used to automatically generate patient-specific models, which may be helpful in designing studies involving a large number of instances and to understand the mechanical behavior of biomechanical structures across a given population.  相似文献

The yield of usable knife edge per knife (for thin sectioning) was markedly increased when glass knives were made at an included angle of 55 degrees rather than the customary 45 degrees. A large number of measurements of edge check marks made with a routine light scattering method as well as observations made on a smaller number of test sections with the electron microscope indicated the superiority of 55 degrees knives. Knives were made with both taped pliers and an LKB Knifemaker. Knives were graded by methods easily applied in any biological electron microscope laboratory. Depending on the mode of fracture, the yield of knives having more than 33% of their edges free of check marks was 30 to 100 times greater at 55 degrees than 45 degrees.  相似文献
