In three year field experiments (2001 – 2003) the growth, yield and productivity of 8 flax cultivars were compared. Cultivars ‘AC Linora’, ‘Flanders’, ‘Linola™ 947’, ‘Norlin’ and ‘Omega’ were obtained from Canada, ‘Barbara’ and ‘Hungarian Gold’ from Hungary and ‘Opal’ from Poland. Apart from the estimation of the yield of aboveground parts dry matter and seed yield the determinations of the primary index value of growth analysis were done and on their basis the indices LAI, LAD, RGR, CGR and HI were calculated. The obtained yield results of the examined flax cultivars show significant genotypic — environmental relationships pertaining to the dynamics of dry matter accumulation and the amount of seed yield. Meteorological conditions in the successive years significantly influenced the particular phases of growth and development of cultivars and the factor which increased the amount of dry matter was the air temperature during the period of plant emergence — budding. During the vegetative season with a large amount of rainfall the average seed yield was about 40 % lower than compared with a year of average precipitation and a warm second part of the second period of flax vegetation. Among the analyzed cultivars a stable yield in all the years was characteristic for cultivars ‘Flanders’, ‘Barbara’ and ‘AC Linora’ (that cultivar, however, during a wet year yielded at a low level). The assimilation leaf surface of the linseed quickly increased during the period from budding to flowering and the accumulation of dry matter of the aboveground parts lasted up to the green maturity. In the successive years of the experiment there were observed significant (linear or logarithmic regressions) relationship between the yield of dry matter and the indices of growth analysis. The biggest values of the CGR indicator were observed for the period from budding to flowering. The maintaining of a high CGR value after plant flowering in the year with a favourable course of climatic parameters was beneficial for a better yield of all flax cultivars. The low values of the RGR index after flowering of cultivar ‘Hungarian Gold’ and ‘Opal’ strictly corresponded to their low yield of seed and straw biomass.  相似文献

Transforming growth factor (TGF-beta) protein families are cytokines that occur as a large number of homologous proteins. Three major subgroups of these proteins with marked specificities for their receptors have been found-TGF-beta, activin/inhibin, and bone morphogenic protein. Although structural information is available for some members of the TGF-beta family of ligands and receptors, very little is known about the way these growth factors interact with the extracellular domains of their cell surface receptors, especially the type II receptor. In addition, the elements that are the determinants of binding and specificity of the ligands are poorly understood. The structure of the extracellular domain of the receptor is a three-finger fold similar to some toxin structures. Amino acid exchanges between multiply aligned homologous sequences of type II receptors point to a residue at the surface, specifically finger 1, as the determinant of ligand specificity and complex formation. The "knuckle" epitope of ligands was predicted to be the surface that interacts with the type II receptor. The residues on strands beta2, beta3, beta7, beta8 and the loop region joining beta2 and beta3 and joining beta7 and beta8 of the ligands were identified as determinants of binding and specificity. These results are supported by studies on the docking of the type II receptor to the ligand dimer-type I receptor complex.  相似文献

Of nineteen commercial samples of carrot seed in use at Wellesbourne in 1963, eight were found to be infected with both Stemphylium radicinum and Alternaria dauci and five with S. radicinum alone. Both fungi caused damping-off of seedlings and when carrots were grown at high densities A. dauci caused severe foliar infection. Neither fungus gave rise to marked infection of ware crops at normal spacings but, when seed infected with S. radicinum was sown in the autumn, the resulting seed crop was heavily infected by the succeeding autumn. Spring-sown carrots grown in soil that had borne infected crops or contained debris infected with either fungus showed little or no infection in the autumn or after storage for 3 1/2 months; autumn-sown or spring-planted (steckling) carrots put into ground infected with S. radicinum showed severe infection in the following autumn. This suggested that ware-crop carrots were resistant to infection from the soil whereas the seed crop was not. Both fungi were eradicated from seed by a 24 hr. soak at 30d? C. in a 0.2% thiram suspension, but were not completely eliminated by seed dust treatments with a range of fungicides.  相似文献

Knowledge of relationships between physiological parameters and growth performance of seedlings and respective genotypic differences would permit selection of salt tolerance at early growth stages. The goals of this study were to investigate the relationships between physiological parameters and growth performance and quantify the respective genotypic differences using multivariate analysis.. Plants of thirty-one genotypes were grown in sand tanks in a greenhouse and irrigated with Yoshida nutrient solution. Two salinity treatments were imposed at 0.9 dSm–1 (control) and 6.4 dSm–1 with sodium chloride and calcium chloride (~ 6: 1 molar ratio). Seedlings were sampled 34 days after planting (7th to 8th leaf stage). The characters of Na+, K+, Ca2+, K-Na selectivity (SK,Na) and Na-Ca selectivity (SNa,Ca) were measured as physiological parameters. The characters of tiller number, leaf area, plant height and shoot dry weight were measured as growth performance. Under salinity stress, SK,Na increased whereas SNa,Ca decreased compared to the controls. Canonical correlation analysis indicates a strong relationship between physiological parameters and growth performance. Tiller number is a desirable parameter among the growth parameters analyzed to predict seedling growth under salinity stress. Genotypes grouped into four clusters based on ion contents and ion selectivity using Wards minimum-variance cluster analysis. SK,Na and shoot Na+ content contributed the most to the cluster formation. Similarly, genotypes grouped into four clusters based on growth performance. Ge notypes were classified into three categories based on ion cluster rankings: Category 1 with high SK,Na and low shoot Na+ content; Category 2 with intermediate SK,Na and shoot Na+ content; Category 3 with low SK,Na and high shoot Na+ content. The classification of the genotypes into Categories 1 and 3 based on their high or low SK,Na was generally consistent with their growth performance under salt stress. In contrast, ion selectivity was a less dominant mechanism controlling salt tolerance in Category 2 with intermediate SK,Na. It was concluded that ion selectivity was a relatively dominant mechanism controlling salt tolerance among rice genotypes although multiple mechanisms may be involved under moderate salt stress. The results also provide the first example of the effectiveness of cluster analysis for physiological responses to salinity stress.  相似文献

Using naturally contaminated seed it is shown that the incidence of the seedling, stem-break and browning phases of attack by Polyspora Lini Laff. in flax crops is related to the contamination of the seed with the parasite, the relationship being closer at low or moderate than at high levels of seed contamination. Heavy attacks of the disease did not occur when the number of contaminated seeds was less than 5%. A similar relationship was found to exist between the contamination of seed with Colletotrichum linicola Pethybr. & Laff. and the incidence of seedling blight in the crops.  相似文献

Vertebrate frugivores often feed on fruits upon or within which insects also feed, yet little information exists on the potential magnitude of interactions between these consumers. The Mediterranean shrub Pistacia terebinthus, the birds that consume its fruits, and the wasps that feed upon its seeds are examined in this study. P. terebinthus produces a highly variable fraction of final-sized red fruits that never become mature (green-colored). Red fruits can be immature, parthenocarpic, aborted, or attacked by wasps, and their pulp is much less nutritious than that of mature fruits. A total of 20 bird species consumed the fruits in the study area. Legitimate dispersers accounted for 39% of the total fruit removal, while pulp eaters and seed predators accounted for the remainder. Birds strongly preferred the mature fruits (only 4% of the fruits consumed were red). The incidence of wasps in the seeds ranged from 0 to 42% of the crop in 1989 and from 0 to 24% in 1990. The influence of avian and insect frugivore guilds on each other appears to be quite low because of the narrow overlap in resource utilization by birds and wasps, and an overall low intensity of wasp seed predation. From an evolutionary perspective, the possible ability of wasps to preclude fruit maturation appears not to be attributable to the present interaction with avian frugivores.  相似文献

The three-dimensional optimization of the electrostatic interactions between the charged amino acid residues and the peptide partial charges was studied by Monte-Carlo simulations on a set of 127 nonhomologous protein structures with known atomic coordinates. It was shown that this type of interaction is very well optimized for all proteins in the data set, which suggests that they are a valuable driving force, at least for the native side-chain conformations. Similar to the optimization of the charge-charge interactions (Spassov VZ, Karshikoff AD, Ladenstein R, 1995, Protein Sci 4:1516-1527), the optimization effect was found more pronounced for enzymes than for proteins without enzymatic function. The asymmetry in the interactions of acidic and basic groups with the peptide dipoles was analyzed and a hypothesis was proposed that the properties of peptide dipoles are a factor contributing to the natural selection of the basic amino acids in the chemical composition of proteins.  相似文献

Understanding food web interactions in native or agricultural ecosystems is an important step towards establishing sustainable pest management strategies. While the role of generalist predators as biological control agents is increasingly appreciated, the study of trophic interactions between individual predator species and their prey provides practical difficulties. Recently, different approaches have been suggested to determine prey items from predator guts using molecular methods. Macrolophus caliginosus is a generalist predator active in herbaceous agro-ecosystems. We developed a system to identify the DNA of its prey after ingestion, using Myzus persicae as a model. Esterase (MpEST) and cytochrome oxidase I (MpCOI) genes were targeted in the aphid, while M. caliginosus COI gene was used as control for predator DNA. Real time PCR proved to be specific and sensitive enough to detect prey DNA upon ingestion after feeding experiments. The system provided a linear amplification response with only 10 fg of prey genomic DNA as template. The detection system of MpCOI gene was more sensitive than MpEST, while the detection period was similar for both genes. Possibilities for using the system in ecological and biosafety studies with regard to sustainable pest management are discussed.

We investigated the physiology that underlies the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization on outcomes of interactions between plants. We grew Medicago truncatula A17 and its AM‐defective mutant dmi1 in intragenotypic (two plants per pot of the same genotype, x2) or intergenotypic (one plant of each genotype, 1 + 1) combinations, inoculated or not with Rhizophagus irregularis (formerly Glomus intraradices) or Gigaspora margarita. We measured plant growth, colonization, contributions of AM and direct P uptake pathways using 32P, and expression of plant Pi transporter genes at two levels of P supply. A17 (x2) responded positively to inoculation only at low P. The response was enhanced with 1 + 1 even at high P where colonization in A17 was reduced. With R. irregularis P uptake by the AM pathway was unaffected by P supply, whereas with G. margarita, the AM pathway was lower at high P, and direct uptake higher. Gene expression varied and was unrelated to P uptake through the two pathways. There was no evidence of plant control of P uptake via R. irregularis at high P but there was via G. margarita. Importantly, growth responses of plant genotypes grown alone did not predict outcomes of intergenotypic interactions.  相似文献

In order to obtain insight into host responses to grapevine downy mildew ( Plasmopara viticola ), we compared pathogen development on a panel of Vitis species from North America, Asia and Europe. Leaf discs from different host species were inoculated in parallel, and the colonisation of the mesophyll was visualised by aniline blue staining and quantified with respect to infection incidence and mycelial growth. In parallel, the morphology of guard cells was screened for the presence of an internal cuticular rim after staining with acridine orange and using low-temperature scanning electron microscopy. We observed three response patterns: (i) inhibition of pathogen development early after attachment of zoospores; (ii) successful colonisation of the mesophyll by the pathogen; and (iii) aberrant development, where the pathogen does not attach to guard cells, but produces hyphae on the leaf surface without formation of viable sporangiophores. Inhibition is observed in the North American and Siberian species, successful colonisation prevails in the European hosts, and surface hyphae are found on non-Siberian Asiatic species. We propose that the interaction between host and pathogen is under control of specific signals that have been subject to evolutionary diversification.  相似文献

Summary We hypothesize that the tritrophic interaction between ants, the aphid Aphis jacobaeae, the moth Tyria jacobaeae, and the plant Senecio jacobaea can explain the genetic variation observed in pyrrolizidine alkaloid concentration in natural populations of S. jacobaea. The ant Lasius niger effectively defends S. jacobaea plants infested with A. jacobaeae against larvae of T. jacobaeae. S. jacobaea plants with A. jacobaeae which are defended by ants escape regular defoliation by T. jacobaeae. Plants with aphids and ants have a lower pyrrolizidine alkaloid concentration than plants without aphids and ants. When these data are fitted to an existing theoretical model for temporal variation in fitness it is shown that varying herbivore pressure by T. jacobaeae in interaction with ants defending aphid-infested plants with a low pyrrolizidine alkaloid concentration can lead to a stable polymorphism in pyrrolizidine alkaloid concentration. Costs of the production and maintenance of pyrrolizidine alkaloids are not accounted for in the model.Publication of the Meijendel-comité, new series no. 114  相似文献

The genetic differences between the human pathogen, Shigella flexneri, and the non-pathogenic Escherichia coli were investigated in an attempt to identify pathogenicity islands (PAIs) in the S. flexneri genome. Genomic subtraction identified a large unique region of DNA which was present in S. flexneri serotype 2a but absent from E. coli K-12. This 42-kb DNA segment was localised to the S. flexneri chromosome and was found to contain a number of elements often associated with PAIs including: insertion sequence elements, bacteriophage genes, and a previously identified Shigella virulence gene (criR). These findings indicate that this region may form a new PAI in the S. flexneri genome.  相似文献

The rhizome morphology and architecture of L. sarcopus Teijsm. & Binnend. and L. darnaedii Hennipman. The rhizomes of the epiphytic fern Lecanopteris are highly modified and shelter ants, either in cavities or between the rhizome underside and the host tree. Different emphases on the relative contributions of morphology and architecture to the form of the ant-house exist in the genus, and are illustrated by a discussion of the rhizomes of L. sarcopus and L. darnaedii from Sulawesi, Indonesia. Lecanopteris sarcopus has dimorphic rhizomes, differentiated into solid, frond-bearing sections and hollow, frondless, ramifying ant-house branches. The internal morphology is simple; complexity in the rhizome structure is the result of profuse growth and branching of the ant-house branches. The rhizome of L. darnaedii is internally differentiated into two gallery and chamber systems, arranged vertically, with one directly above the other and running the length of the rhizome. Lecanopteris darnaedii does not branch profusely; 90–100% of primary side shoots develop but do not commonly grow beyond four to five internodes. Thus, in L. darnaedii plant architecture is restrained but morphology is intricate, while the reverse is true for L. sarcopus. Both species are equally regularly inhabited by ants.  相似文献

  • The CLE (CLAVATA3/ESR) gene family, encoding a group of small secretory peptides, plays important roles in cell‐to‐cell communication, thereby controlling a broad spectrum of development processes. The CLE family has been systematically characterized in some plants, but not in Brassica napus.
  • In the present study, 116 BnCLE genes were identified in the B. napus genome, including seven unannotated, six incorrectly predicted and five multi‐CLE domain‐encoding genes. These BnCLE members were separated into seven distinct groups based on phylogenetic analysis, which might facilitate the functional characterization of the peptides.
  • Further characterization of CLE pre‐propeptides revealed 31 unique CLE peptides from 45 BnCLE genes, which may give rise to distinct roles of BnCLE and expansion of the gene family. The biological activity of these unique CLE dodecamer peptides was tested further through in vitro peptide assays. Variations in several important residues were identified as key contributors to the functional differentiation of BnCLE and expansion of the gene family in B. napus. Expression profile analysis helped to characterize possible functional redundancy and sub‐functionalization among the BnCLE members.
  • This study presents a comprehensive overview of the CLE gene family in B. napus and provides a foundation for future evolutionary and functional studies.

Sporophytic self-incompatibility (SSI) was studied in 11 British Senecio squalidus populations to quantify mating system variation and determine how its recent colonization of the United Kingdom has influenced its mating behavior. S allele number, frequency, and dominance interactions in populations were assessed using full diallels of controlled pollinations. A mean of 5.1 S alleles per population was observed, and no population contained more than six S alleles. Numbers of S alleles within populations of S. squalidus declined with increasing distance from the center of its introduction (Oxford). Cross-classification of S alleles allowed an estimate of approximately seven and no more than 11 S alleles for the entire British S. squalidus population. The low number of S alleles observed in British S. squalidus compared to other SI species is consistent with the population bottleneck associated with S. squalidus' introduction to the Oxford Botanic Garden and subsequent colonization of Britain. Extensive S allele dominance interactions were observed to be a feature of the S. squalidus SSI system and may represent an adaptive response to improve limited mate availability imposed by the presence of so few S alleles. Multilocus allozyme genotypes were also identified for individuals in all populations and geographic patterns of S locus and allozyme loci variation investigated. Less interpopulation structure was observed for the S locus than for allozyme diversity--a finding indicative of the effects of negative frequency-dependent selection at the S locus maintaining equal S phenotypes within populations and enhancing effective migration between populations.  相似文献

Spatio-temporal variations in the composition of the animal interactive assemblages may result in variations in selective pressures on the plants. In ant–seed dispersal mutualisms, the study of the magnitude of spatial and temporal variation of ant assemblages is rarely studied, limiting inferences and generalizations on the evolution of this mutualism. Here, we describe the ant–disperser assemblage of the myrmecochorous herb Helleborus foetidus in 14 populations across the Iberian Peninsula, and dissect the variation in the assemblage into spatial and temporal components as a first step to evaluate the evolutionary potential of this interaction. The ant–visitor assemblage of H. foetidus was mainly represented by species of Formicinae and it was highly diverse and variable in composition and function. Ants behaving as legitimate dispersers and those with mixed behaviour numerically dominated the assemblage compared with elaiosome consumers. The magnitude of the spatial variation was higher than the temporal variation, suggesting that the relative frequency of each functional group will be more foreseeable among years in each population than among populations. At the expense of further analysis of the effects of such variation on dispersal success, we can envisage a selection mosaic scenario, where local adaptive responses of plants might arise as a result of local variations in the specific composition and function of the assemblage.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 135–150.  相似文献

The effect of phenanthrene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) at concentrations of 0, 10, and 100 mg/kg and the bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti P221 on root exudation of Sorghum bicolor L. Moench was studied in laboratory vegetative experiments. Inoculation of the bacterium promoted plant resistance to the pollutant stress and increased their acclimation rate and biomass formation. The ability of this microorganism to produce a phytohormone, indolyl-3-acetic acid, and to degrade phenanthrene, resulted in morphological changes of the plant root system and in the changed intensity of root exudation. In root exudates of sorghum, enzyme activities towards the metabolites formed during microbial degradation of PAH were revealed, which is indicative of a direct involvement of plants in PAH degradation in the rhizosphere as well as of the coupled plant-microbial metabolism in the course of xenobiotic degradation in the root zone. In phenanthrene-contaminated soil, sorghum was found to support selectively the development of the S. meliloti P221 population.  相似文献
