Monogeneans from Pangasiidae (Siluriformes) in Southeast Asia: IV. Five new species of Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Ancylodiscoididae) from Pangasius krempfi,P. kunyit,P. mekongensis and P. sabahensis

The examination of gill parasites from Pangasius krempfi Roberts & Vidthayanon, 1991; P. kunyit Pouyaud et al., 1999; P. mekongensis Gustiano et al., in press and P. sabahensis Gustiano et al., in press (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) in Southeast Asia revealed the presence of six species of Monogenea, all belonging to the genus Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Monogenea, Ancylodiscoididae) as defined by Lim (1996) and Lim et al. (2001). One has been previously described (T. vietnamensis Pariselle et al., 2002), five are considered as new species: T. humerus n. sp. and T. culter n. sp. on P. kunyit; T. mehurus n. sp. and T. culteroides n. sp. on P. sabahensis; and T. phuongi n. sp. on the four studied host species. The latter one, due to slight morphometric differences linked to geographical origin of hosts, is described as made up of three sub-species: T. phuongi phuongi n. sub-sp., T. phuongi malaysiensis n. sub-sp. and T. phuongi indonesiensis n. sub-sp.     

Monogeneans from Pangasiidae (Siluriformes) in Southeast Asia: III. Five new species of Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Ancylodiscoididae) from Pangasius bocourti,P. djambal and P. hypophthalmus

The examination of gill parasites from Pangasius bocourti Sauvage, 1880; P. djambal Bleeker, 1846; P. hypophthalmus (Sauvage, 1878) and P. gigas Chevey, 1930 (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) revealed the presence of seven species of Monogenea among which five are considered new species. They all belong to Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Ancylodiscoididae) as defined by Lim (1996) and Lim et al. (2001). P. bocourti: T. combesi n. sp., T. komarudini n. sp. and T. vietnamensis n. sp. P. djambal: T. caecus (Mizelle & Kritsky, 1969), T. combesi n. sp., T. euzeti n. sp., T. komarudini n. sp. and T. sadilii n. sp. P. hypophthalmus: T. caecus, T. siamensis (Lim, 1990) and T. vietnamensis n. sp. P. gigas: no Monogenea were found on this host species.

The examination of gill parasites from Pangasius pangasius (Hamilton, 1822); P. kinabatanganensis Roberts & Vidthayanon, 1991; P. rheophilus Pouyaud & Teugels, 2000 and P. nieuwenhuisii (Popta, 1904) (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) in Southeast Asia revealed the presence of six species of Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Monogenea, Ancylodiscoidinae). One has been previously described from P. pangasius: T. pangasi (Tripathi, 1957). The other five are new species: T. chandpuri n. sp. from P. pangasius; T. bahari n. sp. and T. sabanensis n. sp. from P. kinabatanganensis; T. redebensis n. sp. from P. rheophilus and T. mahakamensis n. sp. from P. nieuwenhuisii.

The examination of gill parasites from Pangasius polyuranodon Bleeker, 1852 and P. elongatus Pouyaud, Gustiano & Teugels, 2002 (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) in Southeast Asia revealed the presence of four new species of Monogenea all belonging to Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Monogenea, Ancylodiscoididae) as defined by Lim (1996) and Lim et al. (2001): T. furcus n. sp., T. infundibulus n. sp., T. sudartoi n. sp. and T. turbinatio n. sp.

The examination of gill parasites from Pangasius polyuranodon Bleeker, 1852 (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) revealed the presence of six new host-specific species of Monogenea, all belonging to Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Monogenea, Ancylodiscoididae) as defined by Lim (1996) and Lim et al. (2001): T. caestus n. sp., T. crassipenis n. sp., T. legendrei n. sp., T. levangi n. sp., T. slembroucki n. sp. and T. virgula n. sp.

The examination of gill parasites from Pangasius nasutus (Bleeker, 1862) (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) revealed the presence of five new species of Monogenea, all belonging to Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Monogenea, Ancylodiscoididae) as defined by Lim (1996) and Lim et al. (2001): T. serpens n. sp. T. ocrea n. sp., T. megagripus n. sp., T. citreum n. sp. and T. alatus n. sp.     

Monogeneans from Pangasiidae (Siluriformes) in Southeast Asia: X. six new species of Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Ancylodiscoididae) from Pangasius micronema

The examination of gill parasites from Pangasius micronemao Bleeker, 1847 (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) in Southeast Asia revealed the presence of nine species of Monogenea. Two (Thoparocleidus brevicochleus Pariselle, Lim & Lambert, 2001 and T. sinespinoe Pariselle, Lim & Lambert, 2001) have been previously described. Among the others, six species, belonging to Thaporocleidus Jain, 1952 (Monogenea, Ancylodiscoididae) as defined by Lim (1996) and Lim et al. (2001), are considered new species: T. tacitus n. sp., T. summagracilis n. sp., T. portentosus n. sp., T rukyonii n. sp., T. durandi n. sp., and T. lebrunce n. sp. The remaining species is represented by too few individuals to be conclusively described.     

Monogeneans from Pangasiidae (Siluriformes) in Southeast Asia: IX. Two new species of Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Ancylodiscoididae) from Pangasius mahakamensis

The examination of gill parasites from P. mahakamensis Pouyaud, Gustiano & Teugels, 2002 (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) in Southeast Asia revealed the presence of three species of Monogenea. One (Thaparocleidus caecus (Mizelle & Kritsky, 1969)) had been previously described. The other two, belonging to Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952 (Monogenea, Ancylodiscoididae) as defined by Lim (1996) and Lim et al. (2001), are considered new species: T. pouyaudi n. sp. and T. teugelsi n. sp.     

Pseudempleurosoma gibsoni n. sp., a new ancyrocephalid monogenean from Paralonchurus brasiliensis (Sciaenidae) from off the southeastern coast of Brazil

Pseudempleurosoma gibsoni n. sp. (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalidae) is described from the oesophagus of Paralonchurus brasiliensis (Steindachner) from off the coast of Brazil. The type-species of Pseudempleurosoma Yamaguti, 1965, P. carangis Yamaguti, 1965, is redescribed and the diagnosis of the genus is amended. Metadiplectanotrema Gerasev et al. 1987 is considered synonym of Pseudempleurosoma. This genus now contains four species, including P. carangis, P. caranxi Gerasev et al., 1987 n. comb., P. myripristi Gerasev et al., 1987 n. comb. and the one new species.     

Seven new species of Quadriacanthus Paperna, 1961 (Monogenea) from the gills of Heterobranchus longifilis and H. isopterus from the Ivory Coast,West Africa

The gills of two species of Siluriformes, Heterobranchus longifilis and H. isopterus collected from the Rivers Agnéby and Bia in the Ivory Coast (West Africa) revealed the presence of seven new species of Quadriacanthus Paperna, 1961 (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalidae). The following parasites are described: Quadriacanthus longifilisi n. sp., Q. thysi n. sp., Q. ayameensis n. sp., Q. agnebiensis n. sp., Q. simplex n. sp., Q. gourenei n. sp. and Q. macrocirrus n. sp.     

Duplaccessorius andinus n. gen., n. sp. (Dactylogyridae: Ancyrocephalinae) from the gills of Percichthys trucha (Perciformes: Percichthyidae) in Patagonia, Argentina

During a parasitological survey of Patagonian freshwater fishes, specimens of a new species of Monogenea were collected from the gills of Percichthys trucha (Perciformes: Percichthyidae). This species is described as the only member of a newly proposed genus of Ancyrocephalinae. Duplaccessorius n. gen. (Dactylogyridae, Ancyrocephalinae) is characterized by hooks with 2 subunits, gonads in tandem, a coiled male copulatory organ with counterclockwise rings, an accessory piece formed by 2 distinct parts, and a nonsclerotized sinistrolateral vagina with a funnel shape vestibule. Duplaccessorius andinus n. sp. infects the gills of P. trucha (Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1840) from Andean Patagonian lakes, being the first species of Ancyrocephalinae described from a South American percichthyid.     

Pararalichus gen.n. (Acarina, Pterolichidae) from New World parrots (Aves, Psittacidae)

Pararalichus gen.n. (Pterolichidae, Pterolichinae) is described; two species groups, from species of Brotogeris Vigors and Touit Gray, respectively, include two named and ten new species. From Brotogeris : the type species Pararalichus dilatatus (Favette & Trouessart) stat.n., comb.n. [= Protolichus ( Mesolichus ) hemiphyllus dilatatus ] from Brotogeris jugularis (Müller), Brazil, Guatemala, Panama; P. chrysopteri sp.n. from B. chrysopterus (L.). Guyana, Surinam; P. cyanopterae sp.n. from B. cyanoptera (Pelzeln), Bolivia, Peru; P. pyrrhopteri sp.n. from B. Pyrrhopterus (Latham), Ecuador, Peru; P. sanctithomae sp.n. from B. sanctithomae (Müller), Bolivia, Peru; P. tiricae sp.n. from B. tirica (Gmelin), Brazil; P. versicolori sp.n. from B. versicolorus (Müller), Brazil, Peru. From Touit: P. hemiphyllus (Mégnin & Trouessart) comb.n. [ =Pterolichus (P.) hemiphyllus ] from Touit batavica (Boddaert), Surinam, Trinidad; P. dilectissimae sp.n. thrn T. dilectissima (Sclater & Salvin), Colmbia, Costa Rica; P. huetii sp.n. from T. huetii (Temminck), Brazil, Guyana, Peru; P. parpuratae sp.n. from T. purpurata (Gmelin), Brazil, Guyana, Surinam; P. surdae sp.n. from T. surda (Kuhl), Brazil. All hosts are Central and South American parrots. Mesolichus Trouessart, 1899 is recognized as a monotypical genus.

Gill parasites of the genus Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960 (Monogenea,Ancyrocephalidae) from Tilapia guineensis (Bleeker, 1862), with descriptions of six new species

A study of gill parasites of Tilapia guineensis (Bleeker, 1862) (Cichlidae) from different locations in West Africa (Senegal, Guinea, the Ivory Coast and the Congo) revealed the presence of twelve species of Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960 (Monogenea). Six have been recorded previously from T. zillii (Gervais, 1848) or Tristamella simonis (Günther, 1864) and six are considered new species: C. agnesi n. sp., C. bilongi n. sp., C. gallus n. sp., C. flexicolpos n. sp., C. louipaysani n. sp. and C. vexus n. sp. In the first three species cited, we report the presence of an auxiliary plate in the male copulatory complex which is characteristic of the species C. aegypticus Ergens, 1981, a parasite of Tilapia zillii.     

Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960 (Monogenea, Ancyrocephalidae): gill parasites from West African Cichlidae of the subgenus Coptodon Regan, 1920 (Pisces), with descriptions of six new species

A study of gill parasites from fishes of the subgenus Coptodon Regan, 1920 (Cichlidae), namely Tilapia coffea Thys van den Audenaerde, T. dageti Thys van den Audenaerde, T. guineensis (Bleeker), T. louka Thys van den Audenaerde, T. walteri Thys van den Audenaerde and T. zillii (Gervais), from different locations in West Africa (Burkina Fasso, Congo, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali and Senegal), revealed the presence of 19 species of Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960 (Monogenea, Ancyrocephalidae). Six are considered new species: C. amphoratus n. sp., C. levequei n. sp., C. microscutus n. sp., C. ornatus n. sp., C. ouedraogoi n. sp. and C. yanni n. sp. The host-specificity of these parasites is discussed.     

Pauciconfibula subsolana n. sp. (Monogenea: Microcotylidae) from Morone americana (Perciformes: Percichthyidae) collected in fresh water in New Brunswick, Canada.

Pauciconfibula subsolana n. sp. (Monogenea: Microcotylidae) is proposed for parasites found on the inner surface of the operculum of Morone americana collected in the freshwater reaches of the Saint John River, near Mactaquac, New Brunswick. Pauciconfibula subsolana is differentiated from other species in the genus by the 2 posterolateral clamp sclerites, each of which is composed of 2 distinct sections, and by the absence of appendages on the eggs. An amended generic diagnosis is provided for Pauciconfibula. Pseudoaspinatrium Mamaev, 1986, is considered a junior synonym of Pauciconfibula Dillon and Hargis, 1965, and the species previously assigned to Pseudoaspinatrium are transferred to Pauciconfibula as Pauciconfibula euzeti (Ktari, 1971) n. comb., Pauciconfibula gallieni (Euzet and Ktari, 1971) n. comb., and Pauciconfibula pogoniae (MacCallum, 1913) n. comb.     

Systematics and phylogeny of Potamotrygonocestus (Platyhelminthes, Tetraphyllidea, Onchobothriidae) with descriptions of three new species from freshwater potamotrygonids (Myliobatoidei, Potamotrygonidae)

Specimens of Potamotrygonocestus used in the present taxonomic and phylogenetic study were collected in freshwater potamotrygonids from the Rio Paraná (Puerto Reconquista, Santa Fé, Argentina; 59°42'W, 29°29'S) during February 1995, and from the Amazon region of Brazil during September to December 1996, supplemented by specimens previously deposited in museum collections. Six species of Potamotrygonocestus were recognized ( P . amazonensis , P . chaoi sp. n., P . fitzgeraldae sp. n., P . magdalenensis , P . maurae sp. n., P . travassosi ), for which an identification key is provided. Potamotrygonocestus orinocoensis is considered a junior synonym of P . travassosi . Additional specimens of Potamotrygonocestus may represent two undescribed species. A phylogenetic analysis of six morphological characters for the six named species of Potamotrygonocestus generated a single tree eight steps long, with a consistency index of 0.87, a retention index of 0.90, and a rescaled consistency index of 0.79 with the following topology: ( P . maurae sp. n. (( P . amazonensis  +  P . magdalenensis ) ( P . chaoi sp. n. ( P . fitzgeraldae sp. n. +  P . travassosi )))).     

New species of Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960 (Monogenea,Ancyrocephalidae) from the gills of Sarotherodon occidentalis (Daget) (Osteichthyes,Cichlidae) in Guinea and Sierra Leone (West Africa)

The examination of gill parasites from èSarotherodon occidentalisè (Daget) (Pisces, Cichlidae) in Guinea and Sierra Leone (West Africa) revealed the presence of seven species of Monogenea. Two of them have previously been described: ichlidogyrus halli; (Price & Kirk, 1967) and Scutogyrus ecoutini Pariselle & Euzet, 1995. Five are considered as new species, all belonging to Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960. They are C. bouvii n. sp., C. fontanai n. sp., C. guirali n. sp., C. paganoi n. sp. and C. sanjeani n. sp.Résumé L'examen des parasites branchiaux de Sarotherodon occidentalis (Daget) (Pisces, Cichlidae) en Guinée et en Sierra Leone (Afrique de l'Ouest) a révélé la présence de sept espèces de Monogènes. Deux ont déjàè été décrites: Cichlidogyrus halli (Price & Kirk, 1967) et Scutogyrus ecoutini Pariselle & Euzet, 1995. Cinq, appartenant toutes au genre Cichlidogyrus Paperna, 1960, sont considérées comme nouvelles, C. bouvii n. sp., C. fontanai n. sp., C. guirali n. sp., C. paganoi n. sp. et C. sanjeani n. sp.     

Empruthotrema stenophallus n. sp. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) from the nasal tissue of Dasyatis kuhlii (Dasyatidae) from Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia

Empruthotrema stenophallus n. sp. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) is described from specimens from the nasal tissue of the blue-spotted maskray Dasyatis kuhlii (Muller and Henle, 1841) collected in shallow waters off Pulau Banggi and Pulau Mabul, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. This is the first monogenean species to be described from an elasmobranch collected from Sabah. E. stenophallus can be distinguished from the other 6 members of the genus by the morphology of the sclerotized male copulatory organ, which is narrow, short, and distally tapered. E. dasyatidis Whittington and Kearn, 1992, previously documented from the nasal tissue of several of elasmobranch species from Australia, is recorded from 8 host species distributed around Malaysian Borneo. These represent new host and locality records for this monocotylid. The difficulties in identifying species of Empruthotrema and the apparent lack of host specificity by some members of the genus are discussed.
