The dissemination of particles in a glasshouse with three united compartments was observed from experiments withLycopodium sp. The experiments were performed in a glasshouse with open and closed ventilation openings, spore sources on two heights above soil surface, and in two consecutive time intervals. The spores were caught with self constructed spore traps placed at regular distances from each other. Air circulation was observed using smoke-puffs. High ventilation caused a rapid cleaning of the air while in a closed glasshouse spores remained suspended for quite a long time. Though the three compartments of the glasshouse were not separated by walls, a so-called cell structure of the individual compartments could be indicated.  相似文献

Declines in pollinator populations have made monitoring pollinators, in particular bees, increasingly important. There is general agreement among practitioners that using a mix of trap colours is important, but the empirical evidence to support this is scattered. During studies of bees in forestry cutovers, large differences were noted in capture rate among white, blue, and yellow pan traps. Pooled data from collections in cutovers and commercial cranberry fields demonstrated significant differences in the effect of trap colour, with the largest numbers captured in white traps, and the fewest in yellow, but only for the genus Bombus Latreille (Hymenoptera: Apidae). The colour preference was consistent with the spectral sensitivity of Bombus, and the visible reflectance spectra of the traps. A literature review suggested that among eusocial bees, Apis Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae) are more attracted to white traps and Bombus are more attracted to blue traps, while non-eusocial bees with a variety of social structures are more attracted to yellow. Among the non-eusocial bees, Halictidae were somewhat attracted to blue, while Andrenidae were not. This supports the common practice of using white, blue, and yellow traps when surveying bees to ensure adequate taxonomic representation.  相似文献

Predation on a species subjected to an infectious disease can affect both the infection level and the population dynamics. There is an ongoing debate about the act of managing disease in natural populations through predation. Recent theoretical and empirical evidence shows that predation on infected populations can have both positive and negative influences on disease in prey populations. Here, we present a predator–prey system where the prey population is subjected to an infectious disease to explore the impact of predator on disease dynamics. Specifically, we investigate how the interference among predators affects the dynamics and structure of the predator–prey community. We perform a detailed numerical bifurcation analysis and find an unusually large variety of complex dynamics, such as, bistability, torus and chaos, in the presence of predators. We show that, depending on the strength of interference among predators, predators enhance or control disease outbreaks and population persistence. Moreover, the presence of multistable regimes makes the system very sensitive to perturbations and facilitates a number of regime shifts. Since, the habitat structure and the choice of predators deeply influence the interference among predators, thus before applying predators to control disease in prey populations or applying predator control strategy for wildlife management, it is essential to carefully investigate how these predators interact with each other in that specific habitat; otherwise it may lead to ecological disaster.  相似文献

Squamate reptiles possess two general modes of sex determination: (1) genotypic sex determination (GSD), where the sex of an individual is determined by sex chromosomes, i.e. by sex‐specific differences in genotype; and (2) temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD), where sex chromosomes are absent and sex is determined by nongenetic factors. After gathering information about sex‐determining mechanisms for more than 400 species, we employed comparative phylogenetic analyses to reconstruct the evolution of sex determination in Squamata. Our results suggest relative uniformity in sex‐determining mechanisms in the majority of the squamate lineages. Well‐documented variability is found only in dragon lizards (Agamidae) and geckos (Gekkota). Polarity of the sex‐determining mechanisms in outgroups identified TSD as the ancestral mode for Squamata. After extensive review of the literature, we concluded that to date there is no known well‐documented transition from GSD to TSD in reptiles, although transitions in the opposite direction are plentiful and well corroborated by cytogenetic evidence. We postulate that the evolution of sex‐determining mechanisms in Squamata was probably restricted to the transitions from ancestral TSD to GSD. In other words, transitions were from the absence of sex chromosomes to the emergence of sex chromosomes, which have never disappeared and constitute an evolutionary trap. Environmental perturbations occur in ecosystems as the result of disturbance, which is closely related to ecosystem stability and resilience. To understand how perturbations can affect ecosystems, we constructed a spatially explicit lattice model to simulate the integrative predator–prey–grass relationships. In this model, a predator (or prey) gives birth to offspring, according to a specific birth probability, when it is able to feed on prey (or grass). When a predator or prey animal was initially introduced or newly born, its health state was set at a given high value. This state decreased by 1 with each time step. When the state of an animal decreased to zero, the animal was considered dead and was removed from the system. In this model, the perturbation was defined as the sudden death of some portion of the population. The heterogeneous landscape was characterized by a parameter, H, which controlled the degree of heterogeneity. When H  0.6, the predator population size was positively influenced by the perturbation. However, the perturbation had little effect upon the population sizes of prey or grass, regardless of the value of H.  相似文献

The scarcity of experimental evidence for the persistence of predator–prey systems at the metapopulation level inspired us to develop a simple predator–prey experiment that could be used for testing several theoretical predictions concerning persistence and its causes. The experimental system used consisted of one or several islands with small bean plants, the phytophagous mite Tetranychus urticae and the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis. In the first experiment, one large system was used consisting of 90 small bean plants, prey and predators. The system persisted for only 120 days. Second, a system was used consisting of eight islands with ten plants each where the islands were connected by bridges. Two replicate experiments showed persistence for at least 393 days. The difference between the first and the second experiments suggests that the longer persistence is caused by a limited migration between the eight islands. Despite efforts to start both replicates of the second experiment with similar initial conditions, the dynamics of both replicates varied substantially. In one replicate the prey and predator numbers showed a trend through time, whereas the numbers fluctuated around a fixed value in the other replicate. A time series analysis of the data of the prey and predators showed the presence of periodicity with a lag of 8.5 weeks in one replicate, whereas such cyclic behaviour was not found in the other replicate. The differences between the two replicates suggest that it is difficult to perform experiments where one replicate is perturbed and the other serves as an undisturbed control. We suggest using a longer time series, where a system is disturbed only during the second half of the experiment. The data from the first and second halves can subsequently be used to estimate the effect of the perturbation. The advantages and disadvantages of this method are discussed. [First paragraph]Koalas are considered to be overabundant in some areas of their natural range. This is the case at Mount Eccles National Park, Victoria, Australia. The concern at Mount Eccles National Park is that an overabundant koala population will have deleterious impacts on the unique forest community as well as leading to a koala population collapse. Due to social and political constraints, the only available management technique is to sterilise adult female koalas. Two questions of interest to management are: (1) Can sterilisation reduce the likelihood of both a decline in the forest community and a severe collapse in the koala population? Background

Both O157 and non-O157 Shiga toxin - producing Escherichia coli (STECs) cause serious human disease outbreaks through the consumption of contaminated foods. Cattle are considered the main reservoir but it is unclear how STECs affect mature animals. Neonatal calves are the susceptible age class for STEC infections causing severe enteritis. In an earlier study, we determined that mycotoxins and STECs were part of the disease complex for dairy cattle with Jejunal Hemorrhage Syndrome (JHS). For STECs to play a role in the development of JHS, we hypothesized that STEC colonization should also be evident in beef cattle with JHS. Aggressive medical and surgical therapies are effective for JHS, but rely on early recognition of clinical signs for optimal outcomes suggesting that novel approaches must be developed for managing this disease. The main objective of this study was to confirm that mouldy feeds, mycotoxins and STEC colonization were associated with the development of JHS in beef cattle.

Results

Beef cattle developed JHS after consuming feed containing several types of mycotoxigenic fungi including Fusarium poae, F. verticillioides, F. sporotrichioides, Penicillium roqueforti and Aspergillus fumigatus. Mixtures of STECs colonized the mucosa in the hemorrhaged tissues of the cattle and no other pathogen was identified. The STECs expressed Stx1 and Stx2, but more significantly, Stxs were also present in the blood collected from the lumen of the hemorrhaged jejunum. Feed extracts containing mycotoxins were toxic to enterocytes and 0.1% of a prebiotic, Celmanax Trademark, removed the cytotoxicity in vitro. The inclusion of a prebiotic in the care program for symptomatic beef calves was associated with 69% recovery.

Conclusions

The current study confirmed that STECs and mycotoxins are part of the disease complex for JHS in beef cattle. Mycotoxigenic fungi are only relevant in that they produce the mycotoxins deposited in the feed. A prebiotic, Celmanax Trademark, acted as a mycotoxin binder in vitro and interfered with the progression of disease.  相似文献

Identifying the location and amount of grain crop residues (stubble) in Australia is necessary for determining the viability of potential biofuel plant locations. We combined 22 years of crop statistics with harvest indices and land use to arrive at spatially explicit stubble productivity figures. Stubble quantities using different focal radii and from different seasons provide an insight into the feasibility of its use for bioenergy. We focus on areas where the stubble concentrations within a 50 km radius were at least 500 kt per year; the amount suggested for a viable lignocellolosic bioethanol facility. The outcome of this study has been to show, for the first time, where there are large amounts of stubble in Australia. Whether the supply of stubble is sufficiently constant over time and indeed available at a price that is economic for a biofuel plant must be subject to future work.  相似文献

Mena (mammalian Ena) is an actin regulatory protein involved in cell motility and adhesion. Based on its potential role in malignant transformation revealed in other organs, we analyzed the Mena expression in normal salivary glands (SG) and salivary tumors. Mena expression was determined in normal SG (n=10) and also benign (n=20) and malignant (n=35) lesions of SG. For the immunohistochemical staining we used the anti-Mena antibody. All normal SG and the benign lesions (10 pleomorphic adenomas, 10 Warthin's tumors) were Mena negative. Salivary duct carcinomas (n=5), carcinomas in pleomorphic adenoma (n=5), acinic cell carcinomas (n=5), squamous cell carcinomas (n=10) and high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinomas (n=2) were positive. The lymphomas (n=5) and low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinomas (n=1) were Mena negative. In one case the lymphoblastic cells stained positive for Mena. Some of the endothelial cells, in the peritumoral vessels, were Mena positive. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in the literature about Mena expression in salivary tumors. Our study suggests that Mena protein seems to play a role in malignant transformation and its intensity is correlated with the type and grade of tumor and also with vascular invasion. Its positivity in endothelial cells may suggest its potential role in tumor angiogenesis.  相似文献

There is a growing debate about the ability of Population Viability Analysis (PVA) to predict the risk of extinction. Previously, the debate has focused largely on models where spatial variation and species movement are ignored. We present a synthesis of the key results for an array of different species for which detailed tests of the accuracy of PVA models were completed. These models included spatial variation in habitat quality and the movement of individuals across a landscape. The models were good approximations for some species, but poor for others. Predictive ability was limited by complex processes typically overlooked in spatial population models, these being interactions between landscape structure and life history attributes. Accuracy of models could not be determined a priori, although model tests indicated how they might be improved. Importantly, model predictions were poor for some species that are among the best‐studied vertebrates in Australia. This indicated that although the availability of good life history data is a key part of PVA other factors also influence model accuracy. We were also able to draw broad conclusions about the sorts of populations and life history characteristics where model predictions are likely to be less accurate. Predictions of extinction risk are often essential for real‐world population management. Therefore, we believe that although PVA has been shown to be less than perfect, it remains a useful tool particularly in the absence of alternative approaches. Hence, tests of PVA models should be motivated by the cycle of testing and improvement.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that dabbling ducks (Anas spp.) time breeding to coincide with annual regional peaks in emerging dipterans, especially Chironomidae, which are important prey for newly hatched ducklings. However, this hypothesis has never been evaluated in a replicated lake-level study, including year effects in emergence patterns. We collected duck and invertebrate data from 12 lakes during the nesting seasons 1989–1994 in a watershed in southern Finland. The oligotrophic study lakes are typical of the boreal Holarctic, as are the three focal duck species: mallard Anas platyrhynchos L., widgeon Anas penelope L and teal Anas crecca L. Hatching of ducklings showed a clear peak in relation to ambient phenology (annual ice-out date of lakes), whereas chironomid emergence was more erratic and showed no clear peak at the lake level, although total watershed-level emergence was somewhat higher before and long after the duck hatching peak. Thus, we find no evidence that ducklings hatch in synchrony with abundance peaks of emerging chironomids. There was large within-year temporal variation in chironomid emergence among lakes, but this was not correlated with ambient temperature. The rank of individual lakes with respect to the abundance of emerging chironomids was consistent among as well as within years, a predictability that ought to make adaptive lake choice by ducks possible. On the lake level, there was a positive correlation between the total amount of emerging chironomids and brood use. We argue that emergence patterns of chironomids on typical boreal lakes are neither compressed nor predictable enough to be a major selective force on the timing of egg-laying and hatching in dabbling ducks. Despite spatial (among-lake) patterns of abundance of emerging chironomids being predictable within and among years, the observed pattern of brood use suggests that other factors, e.g. habitat structure, also affect lake choice.  相似文献

Mesophilic glucuronidases are the most widely used reporters of gene expression in plants, but unsuitable as reporters in (hyper-)thermophiles due their insufficient thermal stability. Here we present the native 66.8 kDa thermostable β-glucuronidase of Sulfolobus solfataricus. The enzyme activity is characterized in a wide temperature range ideal for, but not limited to, in vivo genetic study of hyperthermophiles. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate its use as a reporter of gene expression in Sulfolobus, by monitoring a promoter fusion created with the β-glucuronidase coding gene gusB and a copper-responsive promoter.  相似文献

Seed predators that severely affect seed germination rates are well known for many plant species. Here, we hypothesised that due to differences in resource allocation within fruits, seed predation can negatively affect non-predated seeds in infested fruits when predation occurs during fruit maturation (a ‘top-down’ effect). We addressed this question using a system of bruchid beetles on Mimosa trees and we also investigated whether seed quality (nitrogen concentration) affects beetle body mass, which would have implications for adult fitness (‘bottom-up’ effect). To assess spatial variation, bottom-up and top-down effects were investigated in two plant populations. Nitrogen concentration was significantly higher in seeds from non-infested fruits than from infested fruits. This supports the hypothesis that resource allocation may differ between seeds from infested and non-infested fruits. Germination experiments showed that seeds from non-infested fruits germinated better than non-predated seeds from infested fruits. It was also confirmed that seed quality affected bruchid body mass. There was also evidence that more resources were taken from well-developed seeds. These results showed that seed predation can damage non-predated seeds.  相似文献

Much has been published on the application of genetically modified (GM) crops in Africa, but agricultural performance has hardly been addressed. This paper discusses the main consequences of GM crops on agricultural performance in Ethiopia. Three main criteria of performance - productivity, equitability and sustainability - are evaluated in the context of the Ethiopian agricultural sector. We conclude that the application of GM crops can improve the agricultural productivity and sustainability, whereas equitability cannot be stimulated and might even exacerbate the gap between socioeconomic classes. Before introducing GM crops to Ethiopian agriculture, regulatory issues should be addressed, public research should be fostered, and more ex ante values and socioeconomic studies should be included.  相似文献

The breeding system of Ramosmania heterophylla– dioecy or heterostyly?Ramosmania heterophylla (Cafe Marron), endemic to Rodrigues, Mauritius, is now almost extinct, since it appears to exist in the wild as a single plant, but has recently been successfully established at Kew by means of vegetative cuttings. Despite plenty of flowers on the Kew plants, attempts to set seed by manual pollination for seed banking purposes have failed. This investigation showed that pollen is viable and that embryo sacs appear fully developed. Lack of seed set is a result of the non-functional stigmas on short styles. The most likely explanation is that the last-known plant is male, although heterostyly or a mutant stylar developmental gene cannot be ruled out. The plant has a chromosome number of 2n= 22.  相似文献
