A review of the North American species of the genus Tarphiota Casey is presented. Three species are recognized: T. densa (Moore), T. fucicola (Mäklin), and T. geniculata (Mäklin). They occur on the sandy beaches of the Pacific coast. A new coastal species of Atheta, found on the seashore and exhibiting certain convergent characteristics to Tarphiota, is described from the Atlantic coast: A. novaescotiae Klimaszewski and Majka, sp. nov. All Canadian species are provided with diagnoses, genitalic illustrations and digital photos of their habitus in dorsal and lateral view. A key is presented to distinguish the species. New data on the natural history of A. novaescotiae are presented and briefly discussed.  相似文献

A cladistic analysis of the tribe Myllaenini Ganglbauer and related genera is presented. Monophyly of the Myllaenini is tested, and the tribe is hypothesized to be a monophyletic group consisting of nine genera (Myllaena Erichson, Amazonopora Pace, Dimonomera Cameron, Bryothinusa Casey, Philomina Blackwelder, Polypea Fauvel, Brachypronomaea Sawada, Rothium Moore and Legner, and Lautaea Sawada), based on the synapomorphy of antero‐lateral angles of mentum prolonged into spinose processes. A history of the classification of the Myllaenini is discussed. The data set for phylogenetic analysis comprised 99 characters representing 297 character states derived from adult morphology. The analysis agrees on the monophyly of the Myllaenini and the monophyly of the Pronomaeini Ganglbauer (Pronomaea Erichson, Pseudomniophila Pace, Nopromaea Cameron and Tomoxelia Bernhauer). The tribe Dimonomerini (Dimonomera Cameron) is confirmed to be a member of the Myllaenini. Masuriini is a possible sister group of the Myllaenini. Stylopalpus Cameron shows a sister group relationship to the Pronomaeini. Several other clades are also consistently recovered. However, the phylogenetic relationships of the genus Dysacrita are ambiguous. The rogue genus Diglotta Champion is not recovered as a member of the Myllaenini or Pronomaeini. On the contrary, it forms a monophyletic clade with the liparocephaline genera Halorhadinus Sawada and Amblopusa Casey. Evolution of the defensive gland on abdominal tergite VII among aleocharine lineages is reconsidered, and the origin of an intertidal habitat in the Myllaenini is discussed.  相似文献

Increased interest in biomass harvesting for bioenergetic applications has raised questions regarding the potential ecological consequences on forest biodiversity. Here we evaluate the initial changes in the abundance, species richness and community composition of rove (Staphylinidae) and ground beetles (Carabidae), immediately following 1) stem-only harvesting (SOH), in which logging debris (i.e., tree tops and branches) are retained on site, and 2) whole-tree harvesting (WTH), in which stems, tops and branches are removed in mature balsam fir stands in Quebec, Canada. Beetles were collected throughout the summer of 2011, one year following harvesting, using pitfall traps. Overall catch rates were greater in uncut forest (Control) than either stem-only or whole-tree harvested sites. Catch rates in WTH were greater than SOH sites. Uncut stands were characterized primarily by five species: Atheta capsularis, Atheta klagesi, Atheta strigosula, Tachinus fumipennis/frigidus complex (Staphylinidae) and to a lesser extent to Pterostichus punctatissimus (Carabidae). Increased catch rates in WTH sites, where post-harvest biomass was less, were attributable to increased catches of rove beetles Pseudopsis subulata, Quedius labradorensis and to a lesser extent Gabrius brevipennis. We were able to characterize differences in beetle assemblages between harvested and non-harvested plots as well as differences between whole tree (WTH) and stem only (SOH) harvested sites where logging residues had been removed or left following harvest. However, the overall assemblage response was largely a recapitulation of the responses of several abundant species.  相似文献

Sheath rot disease of rice caused by Sarocladium oryzae (Sawada) (=Acrocylindrium oryzae, Sawada) has become an important production constraint in all rice-growing countries. Pathogenicity, phytotoxic metabolites, and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to assess the level of genetic variability of S. oryzae derived from rice cultivars, CR1018, IR36, and IR50, of different locations in North East and South India. Variability in pathogenicity, phytotoxic metabolite production, and DNA polymorphisms was detected among S. oryzae isolates. Results indicated that S. oryzae isolates produced both cerulenin and helvolic acid at concentrations 0.3–0.62 and 0.9–4.8 μg mL−1 of culture filtrate, respectively. Isolates that produce higher concentration of helvolic acid induced a high percent incidence of sheath rot disease. Oligonucleotide primers, GF and MR, generated either a simple (up to 2 bands) or complex (up to 6 bands) RAPD pattern. According to their level of similarity, S. oryzae isolates from North East and South India were grouped separately into two major clusters and 13 genotypes. Molecular- and pathogenicity-based classifications were not correlated, but a high level of genetic variability within S. oryzae isolates was identified. The molecular variability of S. oryzae isolates will be an important consideration in breeding programs to develop durable resistance for sheath rot disease.  相似文献

The tribe Liparocephalini (genera Liparocephalus Mäklin, 1853;Diaulota Casey, 1893 [ = Genoplectes Sawada, 1955];Paramblopusa Ahn & Ashe, Amblopusa Casey, 1893;Salinamexus Moore & Legner, 1977 [ = Biophytosus Moore & Legner, 1977]), all of which are exclusively restricted to the Pacific coasts of the Holarctic Region, is hypothesized to be a monophyletic group based on the following synapomorphies: seta v absent (inferred to be lost) from mentum (reversed one time in the Liparocephalus lineage), setae distributed only on mesal surface of galea and apex with setae, one medial seta present on prementum, and contiguous mesocoxal cavities. Natural history and history of the classification of the Liparocephalini are discussed. Phylogenetic analyses of the species of the Liparocephalini are presented based on larval (21 characters, 57 states), adult (49 characters, 115 states), and a combination of larval and adult characters (70 characters, 172 states). Analysis of the combined larval and adult data sets with successive approximation resulted in a single most parsimonious tree (length = 937, CI = 0.885, RI = 0.930) with the following patterns of generic relationships (outgroup (Salinamexus + Biophytosus (Amblopusa (Paramblopusa (Diaulota + Genoplectes, Liparocephalus))))).  相似文献

Bertiella elongata (Bourquin, 1905) andB. plastica (Sluiter, 1896) both fromCynocephalus volans (Linnaeus, 1758) andC. variegatus (Audebert, 1799) are redescribed and illustrated. A neotype forB. plastica is designated.B. boholensis Spasskii, 1951 is reduced to synonymy withB. elongata andB. cynocephali Spasskii, 1951 is synonymised withB. plastica. A new species,B. rauschi, is described fromC. volans in the Philippines. It differs from its congeners in having an accessory seminal receptacle and testes which do not extend to the aporal extremity of the medulla.Bertiella musasabi Yamaguti, 1942 is redescribed from a specimen fromPetaurista petaurista (Pallas, 1766) from Taiwan.Indotaenia indica Singh, 1962 andAprostatandrya petauristae Sawada & Kugi, 1979 become synonyms ofB. musasabi. In this paper, four plant-inhabiting fungi newly collected from the Nansei Islands, Japan, are reported. Among them, Phaeodiscula tremae Sawada from Tokunoshima Island was transferred to the genus Capnodiastrum and given a new name C. sawadae, because in the genus Capnodiastrum, the specific epithet tremae has already been used for the different South American species. Nyssopsora formosana on Koelreuteria formosana and Pestalotiopsis fici on Ardisia quinquegona collected in Okinawa Main Island and Pseudocercospora acaciae-confusae on Acacia confusa collected in Okinoerabu Island were newly recorded from Japan.  相似文献

A study, involving laboratory choice tests, was conducted to determine the feeding behavior, based on food preference, of the adult and larval stage of the rove beetle, Atheta coriaria Kraatz when presented with both fresh moistened oatmeal and second instar fungus gnat, Bradysia sp. nr. coprophila (Lintner) larvae in Petri dishes. Rove beetles used in this study came from a laboratory-reared colony. A rating scale from 1 to 5, based on percent missing (1 = 0 to 10%, 2 = 11 to 30%, 3 = 31 to 50%, 4 = 51 to 75%, and 5 = 76 to 100%), was used to objectively assess the amount of oatmeal and number of fungus gnat larvae consumed by each rove beetle adult and larva. In all the choice tests, A. coriaria adults and larvae preferred to feed on fungus gnat larvae (78% and 69%, respectively) significantly more so than oatmeal (9% and 5%, respectively) based on the amount of oatmeal and number of fungus gnat larvae consumed after 4 and 6 hours. There were relatively minimal differences in the amount of food consumed for both adults and larvae after 4 and 6 hours. The results of this study indicate that oatmeal may be an inexpensive supplemental food source, during the rearing process, which will not inhibit the effectiveness of rove beetles to control fungus gnat larvae when released into greenhouses.  相似文献

The aleocharine beetles of the Yukon Territory, Canada are reviewed based on material studied since the most recent survey of the territory in 2008. The present contribution recognizes a fauna of 125 species, of which 9 are new to science, 20 represent new territorial records and one represents a new Canadian record. Seventeen species are considered Holarctic, 6 introduced, and 2 species are of undetermined status (Holarctic or adventive). The Yukon fauna is classified in 32 genera and 8 tribes. The new species are: 1) Acrotona horwoodae Klimaszewski & Godin, sp. n.; 2) Atheta (Microdota) microelytrata Klimaszewski & Godin, sp. n.; 3) Atheta (Microdota) riparia Klimaszewski & Godin, sp. n.; 4) Atheta (Datomicra) whitehorsensis Klimaszewski & Godin, sp. n.; 5) Ocyusa yukonensis Klimaszewski & Godin, sp. n.; 6) Philhygra pseudolarsoniKlimaszewski & Godin, sp. n.; 7) Philhygra terrestris Klimaszewski & Godin, sp. n.; 8) Boreophilia davidgei Klimaszewski & Godin, sp. n.; and 9) Boreophilia herschelensis Klimaszewski & Godin, sp. n.  相似文献

Eichhornia crassipes Mart. Solms-Laubach (Pontederiaceae), water hyacinth, continues to be the world's worst aquatic weed. In South Africa, considerable research has been conducted on biological control agents associated with water hyacinth, with the release of six arthropods and one fungus, but little is known about the occurrence and impacts of native phytopathogenic fungi. Nation-wide surveys were conducted in 2010 and 2011 on various aquatic bodies of South Africa to identify the fungal pathogens associated with water hyacinth. Diseased plant parts were collected and fungi were isolated and identified. Some 250 isolates belonging to more than 25 genera were collected. Some of these represent new host records, as well as undescribed taxa. Isolates of Acremonium zonatum (Sawada) Gams, Alternaria eichhorniae Nag Raj and Ponnappa, Bipolaris hawaiiensis (M.B. Ellis) Uchida and Aragaki, Fusarium Link, Myrothecium roridum Tode ex Fr. and Ulocladium sp., showed the highest pathogenicity and have the potential to be useful in complementing the ongoing biocontrol programme on water hyacinth in South Africa.  相似文献

Sink-limited conditions cause a reduction in the rate of photosyntheticfixation of CO2 in single-rooted soybean leaves (Glycine max.Merr.). We suggested previously that this reduction is due tothe deactivation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPcase;EC 4.1.1.39 [EC] ) that is caused by a decrease in the level of freePi via a decrease in the rate of conversion of phosphorylatedintermediates to the end-product (sucrose) in sink-limited leaves[Sawada et al. (1989) Plant Cell Physiol. 30: 691, Sawada etal. (1990) Plant Cell Physiol. 31: 697, Sawada et al. (1992)Plant Cell Physiol. 33: 943]. In the present study, we investigatedwhether, in intact soybean plants, sink-limited conditions wouldalso cause a reduction in the rate of photosynthesis and whethersuch a reduction might be due to the deactivation of RuBPcasevia the same regulatory mechanism as that suggested from previousstudies with single-rooted leaves. Continuous removal of flowerbuds from intact plants brought a large decrease in ratio ofthe dry weight of sink organs (stem, roots, pods) to sourceorgan (leaves) as a result of the absence of pod formation.Pods are likely to function as the major sink at the reproductivestage. Upon continuous removal of flower buds, the treated (sink-limited)plants showed a large decrease in the rate of photosyntheticfixation of CO2 as compared to control plants. RuBPcase in theleaves of treated plants was continuously inactivated with thedecrease in photosynthetic activity. However, the inactivatedenzyme was totally reactivated upon incubation in the presenceof 10 mM NaHCO3 and 5 mM MgCl2. The levels of sucrose and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphatein leaves of the treated plants increased significantly. Less than 1% of Staphylinidae are known to be confined to coastal habitats. To explore the origins of coastal colonization within the tribe Athetini Casey, we present a revised molecular phylogeny. The dataset comprised partial mitochondrial COI, COII, 16S rDNA, NADH1, partial nuclear 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA. We chose a total of 95 species in 51 genera, including 14 coastal species in eight genera and 21 outgroup species from other aleocharine tribes. The concatenated dataset was analysed simultaneously by both parsimony‐ and model‐based (Bayesian and maximum likelihood) methods. The tribe Athetini was not supported as a monophyletic group, but together with the tribes Tachyusini, Ecitocharini and Hygronomini did form a monophylum. The ecological association of species with a coastal habitat was mapped onto a phylogeny to assess the evolution of habitat specialization in the Athetini lineage. The results reveal that five independent origins of coastal colonization have occurred throughout the tribe Athetini: (a) Osakatheta + Adota minuta + coastal Atheta (Badura) (clade A); (b) Adota (clade B); (c) Pontomalota + Tarphiota + Thinusa (clade C); (d) Iotarphia (clade D); and (e) Psammostiba (clade E). The low species number of the coastal Athetini compared with the entire Athetini lineage indicates that coastal habitats are harsh environments and so only a few species were able to colonize this habitat. The following changes in classification are proposed: (a) Ad. minuta Lee and Ahn is removed from the genus Adota and tentatively included in Atheta (Badura); (b) The genus Saphocallus Sharp is transferred from Athetini to Geostibini.  相似文献

The oligomeric state of human porphobilinogen synthase (PBGS) [EC.4.2.1.24] is homooctamer, which consists of conformationally heterogenous subunits in the tertiary structure under air-saturated conditions. When PBGS is activated by reducing agent with zinc ion, a reservoir zinc ion coordinated by Cys223 is transferred in the active center to be coordinated by Cys122, Cys124, and Cys132 (Sawada et al. in J Biol Inorg Chem 10:199–207, 2005). The latter zinc ion serves as an electrophilic catalysis. In this study, we investigated a conformational change associated with the PBGS activation by reducing agent and zinc ion using analytical ultracentrifugation, negative staining electron microscopy, native PAGE, and enzyme activity staining. The results are in good agreement with our notion that the main component of PBGS is octamer with a few percent of hexamer and that the octamer changes spatial subunit arrangement upon reduction and further addition of zinc ion, accompanying decrease in f/f 0. It is concluded that redox-regulated PBGS activation via cleavage of disulfide bonds among Cys122, Cys124, and Cys132 and coordination with zinc ion is closely linked to change in the oligomeric state.  相似文献

DNA fragments containing argK-tox clusters and their flanking regions were cloned from the chromosomes of Pseudomonas syringae pathovar (pv.) actinidiae strain KW-11 (ACT) and P. syringae pv. phaseolicola strain MAFF 302282 (PHA), and then their sequences were determined. Comparative analysis of these sequences and the sequences of P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (TOM) (Buell et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 100:10181–10186, 2003) and pv. syringae B728a (SYR) (Feil et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 102:11064–11069, 2005) revealed that the chromosomal backbone regions of ACT and TOM shared a high similarity to each other but presented a low similarity to those of PHA and SYR. Nevertheless, almost-identical DNA regions of about 38 kb were confirmed to be present on the chromosomes of both ACT and PHA, which we named “tox islands.” The facts that the GC content of such tox islands was 6% lower than that of the chromosomal backbone regions of P. syringae, and that argK-tox clusters, which are considered to be of exogenous origin based on our previous studies (Sawada et al., J Mol Evol 54:437–457, 2002), were confirmed to be contained within the tox islands, suggested that the tox islands were an exogenous, mobile genetic element inserted into the chromosomes of P. syringae strains. It was also predicted that the tox islands integrated site-specifically into the homologous sites of the chromosomes of ACT and PHA in the same direction, respectively, wherein 34 common gene coding sequences (CDSs) existed. Furthermore, at the left end of the tox islands were three CDSs, which encoded polypeptides and had similarities to the members of the tyrosine recombinase family, suggesting that these putative site-specific recombinases were involved in the recent horizontal transfer of tox islands. Pseudomonas syringae are differentiated into approximately 50 pathovars with different plant pathogenicities and host specificities. To understand its pathogenicity differentiation and the evolutionary mechanisms of pathogenicity-related genes, phylogenetic analyses were conducted using 56 strains belonging to 19 pathovars. gyrB and rpoD were adopted as the index genes to determine the course of bacterial genome evolution, and hrpL and hrpS were selected as the representatives of the pathogenicity-related genes located on the genome (chromosome). Based on these data, NJ, MP, and ML phylogenetic trees were constructed, and thus 3 trees for each gene and 12 gene trees in total were obtained, all of which showed three distinct monophyletic groups: Groups 1, 2 and 3. The observation that the same set of OTUs constitute each group in all four genes suggests that these genes had not experienced any intergroup horizontal gene transfer within P. syringae but have been stable on and evolved along with the P. syringae genome. These four index genes were then compared with another pathogenicity-related gene, argK (the phaseolotoxin-resistant ornithine carbamoyltransferase gene, which exists within the argK–tox gene cluster). All 13 strains of pv. phaseolicola and pv. actinidiae used had been confirmed to produce phaseolotoxin and to have argK, whose sequences were completely identical, without a single synonymous substitution among the strains used (Sawada et al. 1997a). On the other hand, argK were not present on the genomes of the other 43 strains used other than pv. actinidiae and pv. phaseolicola. Thus, the productivity of phaseolotoxin and the possession of the argK gene were shown at only two points on the phylogenetic tree: Group 1 (pv. actinidiae) and Group 3 (pv. phaseolicola). A t test between these two pathovars for the synonymous distances of argK and the tandemly combined sequence of the four index genes showed a high significance, suggesting that the argK gene (or argK–tox gene cluster) experienced horizontal gene transfer and expanded its distribution over two pathovars after the pathovars had separated, thus showing a base substitution pattern extremely different from that of the noncluster region of the genome.
