A simple method is proposed for distinguishing between two levels of the physiological state of the common carp by the water content in the organism. It is shown that low water content (2.61 ± 0.04 g H2O per 1 g of dry weight, 72.3 ± 0.27%) in the body of the fish is associated with a state providing for the growth of the organism. Higher water content (3.63 ± 0.06 g H2O per 1 g of dry weight, 78.4 ± 0.26%) in the body of the fish is associated with a physiological state that helps it survive through environmental conditions unfavorable for the growth of the organism.  相似文献

It is found that the size–mass, physiological–biochemical, and behavioral parameters in roach fingerlings from the upper and lower (mouth) reaches of the Ild River differed during the autumn season. Compared with the roach from the upper reach of the river, the fingerlings of the same age from the mouth part have larger lengths and weights and a higher concentration of cations in the body. In experiments, the fish from the mouth part selected a lower (~4°C) temperature and showed a lower resistance to the water flow. The reason for differences in behavioral responses in two groups of juveniles of roach is probably, on the one hand, their physiological and biochemical characteristics and, on the other hand, the motivational component of fish behavior in different environments—hydrological, thermal, and hydrochemical conditions and different food items in geographically remote parts of the same river. It is assumed that in autumn roach fingerlings migrate from the littoral of the mouth part of the river into deeper parts under a decrease in water temperature before the downstream migration of the fingerlings in the rivers. This is probably due to the earlier achievement of the migration status of fingerlings from the mouth part than that in fish from the upper reach of the river and due to the peculiarities of their physiological state. Negative rheoreaction, manifested in the experiment in ~80% of the fish from the bay of the reservoir and ~55% of the fish from river, confirms the fish readiness to migrate and is likely due to the behavioral mechanism of fish migration from the littoral and downstream the river.  相似文献

The effect of 21 days of starvation, followed by a period of compensatory growth during refeeding, was studied in juvenile roach Rutilus rutilus during winter and summer, at 4, 20 and 27° C acclimation temperature and at a constant photoperiod (12L : 12D). Although light conditions were the same during summer and winter experiments and fish were acclimated to the same temperatures, there were significant differences in a range of variables between summer and winter. Generally winter fish were better prepared to face starvation than summer fish, especially when acclimated at a realistic cold season water temperature of 4° C. In winter, the cold acclimated fish had a two to three‐fold larger relative liver size with an approximately double fractional lipid content, in comparison to summer animals at the same temperature. Their white muscle protein and glycogen concentration, but not their lipid content, were significantly higher. Season, independent of photoperiod or reproductive cycle, was therefore an important factor that determined the physiological status of the animal, and should generally be taken into account when fish are acclimated to different temperature regimes. There were no significant differences between seasons with respect to growth. Juvenile roach showed compensatory growth at all three acclimation temperatures with maximal rates of compensatory growth at 27° C. The replenishment of body energy stores, which were utilized during the starvation period, was responsible for the observed mass gain at 4° C. The contribution of the different energy resources (protein, glycogen and lipid) was dependent on acclimation temperature. In 20 and 27° C acclimated roach, the energetic needs during food deprivation were met by metabolizing white muscle energy stores. While the concentration of white muscle glycogen had decreased after the fasting period, the concentrations of white muscle lipid and protein remained more or less constant. The mobilization of protein and fat was revealed by the reduced size of the muscle after fasting, which was reflected in a decrease in condition factor. At 20° C, liver lipids and glycogen were mobilized, which caused a decrease both in the relative liver size and in the concentration of these substrates. Liver size was also decreased after fasting in the 4° C acclimated fish, but the substrate concentrations remained stable. This experimental group additionally utilized white muscle glycogen during food deprivation. Almost all measured variables were back at the control level within 7 days of refeeding.  相似文献

Most fish species are regularly subjected to periods of starvation during which a reduction of energy turnover might be favourable for the animal. This reduction of energy flux may be achieved by changes in thermal behaviour and/or swimming activity. We investigated such behavioural changes during starvation and subsequent refeeding in roach, Rutilus rutilus, with respect to energetic benefits and growth maximisation. Roach, acclimated to a wide range of temperatures (4, 12, 20, 24, 27 and 30 °C), were fed to excess, subjected to 3 weeks of starvation and subsequently refed in order to determine the temperature dependence of feeding rates, growth rates and conversion efficiency (K1) under control conditions and during compensatory growth. When exposed to a thermal gradient, control animals preferentially selected a temperature of 26.8ǂ.9 °C, which is in the range of the optimal temperatures for feeding, growth and conversion efficiency. Starving fish showed a distinct circadian pattern of the mean selected temperature (MST). They migrated to cooler water in the dark (MSTdark=22.8ǃ.1 °C) but returned to warmer water during daytime. This behaviour may be regarded as a trade-off between the potentially higher food density in warmer water areas and the energetic benefit of selecting cooler water patches. The circadian pattern of MST was gradually abandoned upon refeeding and control values were reached again after 3 weeks. Energetically more effective than behavioural hypothermia was the reduction of swimming activity. During starvation, activity peaks were slightly lower than under control conditions and mean daily activity decreased by about 50%. Swimming velocity, however, was not affected by feeding regime. After a period of starvation fish showed compensatory growth at all temperatures, even below 12 °C, where these animals normally do not grow. This suggests that after a period of starvation the critical temperature for growth shifts to lower values.  相似文献

The rearing of finfish larvae is a key element in their further culture. Improper breeding protocols may result in high mortality rates, body deformation and growth rate decreases in both the larval and fattening periods. These errors can be avoided by thorough exploration of various aspects of early larvae biology, at least in model fish species. In this study, anatomical and morphological developments were analysed using allometric growth patterns of common barbel, Barbus barbus, larvae reared under optimal controlled conditions. Larvae of common barbel, which is a model species for fish of the genus Barbus, were reared for 30 days at 25 °C in the recirculated aquaculture system (RAS). Four periods of the barbel larval development were identified: pre-flexion (0–5 days post hatching – DPH; total length – TL: 9.5 ± 0.3 to 12.3 ± 0.3 mm), flexion (6–11 DPH; TL 12.4 ± 0.3–15.4 ± 0.3 mm), post-flexion (12–21 DPH; TL 16.1 ± 0.5–21.2 ± 0.8 mm) and juvenile (from 22 DPH; TL from 21.4 ± 1.7 mm). The largest changes in barbel growth were observed during the first two periods of their life (pre-flexion and flexion), which resulted in the frequency of noted flexion points (64.3% flexion points) and was also associated with intensive morphometric growth, primarily the head and tail parts of the body. Despite a low degree of growth progress upon hatching (e.g. no eye pigment, no distinct liver or pancreas, no unobstructed alimentary tract), barbel larvae pass through the larval periods very quickly in comparison to other cyprinids and enter the juvenile period (22 days).  相似文献

As a result of studies for 3 years on the roach Ratilus ratilus under natural conditions, it was shown that the Na, K, Ca, and Mg content in the blood plasma, erythrocytes, and muscle tissue as well as muscle water were maintained year after year within definite ranges characterizing normal values for these parameters. Comparison of variations in the Na, K, Ca, Mg blood plasma concentrations in different fish species revealed the presence of common limits for each of these elements. Throughout the year the most essential changes in the roach blood and tissue cation levels were found during reproduction period. During spawning the fish are characterized by the state of acute stress with parameters indicating a decrease in stability and exhaustion of adaptive possibilities in animals. Intensification of defense reactions, including those providing maintenance of the water–salt homeostasis occurs shortly before spawning for a preliminary preparation to the stress situation.  相似文献

Impacts of abiotic factors on low lying salt marsh species have been closely evaluated as unique stressors, but few studies have determined the physiological and morphological responses to predicted climate change conditions. This study investigated the effects of water state (tidal, flooded and drought) and salinity on Triglochin buchenaui K?cke, Mering and Kadereit, newly separated from the Triglochin bulbosa L. complex. Growth, proline concentration, relative water content, electrolyte leakage, chlorophyll concentration and morphological analyses were done following 3?months of treatments. Results showed significant variation in height (7.57?±?0.5?C29?±?1.55?cm, p?<?0.005, df?=?55), leaf area increments and relative growth rates which decreased with increasing salinity under all water states. There was almost a cessation of growth under submergence which reduces the plant??s regeneration potential under these conditions. Proline accumulation (1.84?±?0.23?C3.36?±?0.38?mg?g?1 DW), response of photosynthetic pigments and electrolyte leakage (8.17?±?0.80?C38.36?±?7.42?%???S?g?1?FW) were fundamental to osmotic and membrane response regulation. Plants survived in all water states at salinity up to 45?ppt, but the optimum range was 0?C18?ppt, and best water state was the tidal condition. Viable rhizomes were produced under drought conditions but in the absence of seed banks, regeneration of the species following prolonged submergence may not be possible due to absence of both rhizomes and seeds. In their natural habitat, highly succulent T. buchenaui plants (29?±?1.55?cm tall and above) are indicative of freshwater conditions.  相似文献

Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) occupy some of the most northerly distributions of any sturgeon species and experience extended overwintering periods when resources may be limited. Conservation stocking is currently used as a management tool to enhance lake sturgeon populations that are at risk or endangered. One of the most limiting components of the conservation effort is our understanding of energy requirements that allow age-0 lake sturgeon to survive their first winter. In this study, age-0 fish (mean mass 5.6 g?±?0.5 S.E.; mean total length 12.7 cm?±?0.4 S.E.) were held in groups of 12 individuals (10 total groups) and starved for a period of four weeks while being held at 1?±?1 °C. This setting was intended to simulate winter conditions that occur in the Winnipeg River, MB, Canada. Post-winter fish condition and physiology were compared to pre-winter fish using survival, energy density, metabolic rate, glucose, triglyceride, protein, and cortisol production as metrics. While mortality was high (42%) during the experiment, results indicated that fish with total water content below 90% and energy density above 2000 J/g were more likely to survive. Whole body triglyceride, plasma triglyceride, plasma glucose levels, and standard metabolic rates were also found to significantly decline over time while whole body cortisol concentration increased. Understanding these thresholds will help in future refinements of rearing conditions, which look to improve the survival of age-0 lake sturgeon released into the wild pre-winter.  相似文献

Threshold levels of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium that define the distribution range of roach in fresh water are 0.015–0.019, 0.012–0.015, 0.006–0.009, and 0.002–0.003 mmol/L, respectively. A reduction in water mineralization is accompanied by a significant decrease in the concentration gradient of cations between the organism of a fish and the environment and by the increased stress on the systems responsible for salty exchange. Many reservoirs are characterized by lower concentrations of potassium in the water than is needed for the success of the roach population. The survival of roach in these waterbodies depends on the amount of potassium consumed by fish with their food. A comparative analysis is performed to assess the threshold levels of cations for roach, two bivalve mollusk species, crayfish, and the filamentous algae Spirogyra.  相似文献

Temperature and food availability are two important factors which affect fish growth and therefore are expected to influence habitat choice in fish. In this study, shoals of 16 juvenile roach, Rutilus rutilus , were given a choice between two chambers that differed in temperature by 1·5°C or 3°C whereas food availability was the same in both chambers (ratio 1 : 1) or higher in the colder one (ratio 4 : 1). The number of fish in each chamber was recorded for 10 min each during a pre-feeding, feeding and post-feeding period. Roach generally preferred the warmer over the colder chamber during the pre-feeding periods. Temperature had a significant effect on the distribution of fish during all three time periods whereas food availability was a significant factor only during the feeding period. The important role of temperature was emphasized further by the fact that a relatively small difference in the temperature gradient of 1·5°C had a stronger effect on fish distribution than a four times higher feeding rate during the feeding period. The implications for growth rates of such short-term decision-making of roach are discussed.  相似文献

The content of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the hemolymph of river crayfish caught in nature is maintained at levels of 178.0 ± 2.5, 7.1 ± 0.5, 17.3 ± 0.7, and 3.0 ± 0.1 mmol/L, accordingly. It is shown that the threshold concentrations of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in water determining the distribution borders of river crayfish in fresh reservoirs is 0.0087–0.0174, 0.0046–0.0087, 0.0105–0.0222, and 0.0012–0.0033 mmol/L, accordingly. The reduction of water mineralization is accompanied by a significant increase in the gradients of the cation concentration between the organism and the environment, which is accompanied with a higher load on the maintenance of the water-salt exchange. A comparative analysis of the threshold concentrations of the above mentioned elements for river crayfish, roach, perch, goldfish, crucian, two species of two-folding mollusks, and Spirogyra filamentous alga is performed.  相似文献

During the 20th century Lake Ringsjön has developed from a mesotrophic to a eutrophic lake, and the phytoplankton community has changed from a rather diverse community to a monoculture of blue-green algae. The eutrophication process has accelerated during the last decade. The most important external nutrient loading of today comes from agriculture.Although phosphorus has been shown to be the primary nutrient leading to excessive algal growth in fresh water, several biotic factors — such as interactions between nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton and planktivorous fish — may play a decisive role in the occurrence and maintenance of large algal blooms.The aim of this investigation was to study the changes in the fish community of Lake Ringsjön, especially the most dominant planktivores, and the state of the zooplankton community during the seventies. The fish fauna is dominated by cyprinids, especially roach, and there are relatively few predatory fish. During the seventies the mean size of roach decreased, and measurements of the zooplankton community indicated that the predation pressure on zooplankton had increased. The mean sizes of cladocerans such as Daphnia and Bosmina, which were selected for by the planktivorous fish, decreased; the size of the calanoid Diaptomus, which was not preyed upon by the dominating fish species, did not change. The growth of zooplankton-feeding stages of several fish species was retarded, which meant that the growth of young perch decreased, while older roach were mainly affected. In the prevailing situation, planktivorous roach can maintain a numerous population of small individuals, whereas the predatory perch is at a disadvantage, and predation on zooplankton is intense.  相似文献

In this study we tried to develop a uniform method of sperm cryopreservation for four cyprinid fish species indigenous to Hungarian waters: the roach (Rutilus rutilus L.), the bream (Abramis brama L.), the silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna L.) and the barbel (Barbus barbus L.). The sperm was frozen in liquid nitrogen vapor in the presence of five extenders (350 mm fructose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 350 mm glucose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 300 mm sucrose, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0; 200 mm KCl, 30 mm Tris, pH 8.0 and modified Kurokura's extender) and two cryoprotectants: 10% methanol (MeOH) and 10% dimethyl‐sulfoxide. The highest post‐thaw motility (roach: 77 ± 6%, bream: 77 ± 6%, silver bream: 67 ± 5%, barbel: 75 ± 6%), fertilization (roach: 84 ± 4%, bream: 83 ± 2%, silver bream: 63 ± 2%, barbel: 70 ± 4%) and hatching (roach: 74 ± 2%, bream: 67 ± 6%, silver bream: 54 ± 2%, barbel: 61 ± 4%) rates were found when either fructose or glucose extenders were used in combination with MeOH as cryoprotectant for all four investigated species. Strong correlations were found between post‐thaw motility of the sperm and fertilization or hatching rates, which indicates that motility can be used to predict fertilization success in these species.  相似文献

Specific features of thermoregulation behavior were studied, and values of the selected and final selected temperature (25.1°C) for early juveniles of roach Rutilus rutilus aged 11–28 days after hatching were first studied in long-term experiments (16 days). Two periods of the process of thermoselection—transient (selected temperature, up to 7–9 days after the beginning of the experiment) and final (final selected temperature, 8–10 days after the beginning of the experiment)—have been identified. The selection by larval roach of final selected temperature values occurs with use of the adaptation response of “excessive responding.” It was shown that correct determination of final selected temperature values for early juveniles of fish is possible only in long-term experiments (more than 7 days). The obtained results can be used during the analysis of behavior and distribution of larval roach under natural and experimental conditions.  相似文献

The seasonal changes of proteolytic activity in the gut content of roach R. rutilus and rudd S. erythrophthalmus in four Tyrolean lakes and the adaptation of the proteases to constant temperatures and different natural diets were studied. In rudd proteolytic activity remains nearly constant throughout the year. In roach proteolytic activity increases and then decreases during the first three months after the thaw in spring. This period appears to be endogenously controlled and is followed by a second stage in which proteolytic activity is influenced by environmental factors. Under natural conditions both species have a higher proteolytic activity when feeding on animals than on detritus. Under laboratory conditions there is a slight maximum at an environmental temperature of 16° C when the fish had been fed on meal worms. With plant food a significant dependence of proteolytic activity on environmental temperature was only found in roach.  相似文献

Water body and bank structure use of adult roach Rutilus rutilus were examined to increase the knowledge of the most abundant species in the River Spree, Germany. Six tracking series were conducted between 1994 and 1995 to analyse the seasonal and diel movements of the fish. In each series, four to 12 roach were tagged externally and located every 2 h for up to 14 days using radiotelemetry. Roach were highly active, moving up to 10 km downstream to Lake Dämeritzsee, and up to 6 km upstream from their release site. The fish, which mostly swam greater distances upstream during the day and downstream at night, were most active during the spawning season. Their habitat range varied greatly. Close-range habitat, based on 50% of all radiolocations, varied between 5 and 1350 m (mean, ̄=296 m). Wide-range habitat, based on 90% of all radiolocations, varied between 75 and 3820 m (̄=1006 m). The fish preferred different sections of water at different times of year, casting doubt on the relevance of the term home range. Generally, roach stayed close to the bank structures of the main channel during the day and moved to the stagnant waters at night. Consequently, they were most active at dawn and dusk.  相似文献

Biomanipulation measures in the Netherlands are usually a combination of a drastic fish stock reduction and an introduction of pike fingerlings. In three small shallow lakes (Noorddiep, Bleiswijkse Zoom and Zwemlust) these measures resulted in a clear water state and the development of macrophytes. After the measures the fish community developed differently because of the new physical and biological conditions. Results of lake Noorddiep and lake Bleiswijkse Zoom showed that the fish community became more divers. Bream and carp became less dominant and were partly replaced by roach and perch. The importance of the main predator pike-perch was strongly reduced and replaced by pike and perch. The share of piscivorous fish in the total fish stock increased at all sites. The recruitment of young-of-the-year was similar or even higher in the clear overgrown areas than in the turbid water before the measures, but the recruitment of young-of-the-year to older fish differed between the species. Predation by pike and perch could not control the young-of-the-year cyprinids, but their predation may have contributed to the shift from bream to roach, because of selective predation on bream in the open water, while roach was hiding in the vegetation. The macrophytes provide new refugia and feeding conditions that favour roach and perch, but offer relatively poor survival conditions for bream and carp.  相似文献

A method of estimating the population density of roach in Tjeukemeer (21.3 km2) using 20 529 introduced fin-clipped fish is described. Fyke nets proved to be an effective method of sampling the population for marked fish during the spawning season. A total of 20 277 roach were processed during the recapturing period. The population density of roach (⋝ 14 cm) was estimated to be 1 246 458. The growth rate of roach in the lake although relatively poor (von Bertalanffy's L ∞ for males and females, 22 and 26 cm respectively) for the species was similar to that recorded in three other Friesian lakes. The mortality rate of males was higher than that of females. Logarithmic length-weight regression analyses showed that the value of the coefficient varied both within and between the sexes, that of females being higher (range 3.03–3.375) than that of males (range 2.76–3.254). Seasonal changes in the size of the coefficient were due to a disproportionate loss of gonad weight in larger fish. The fecundity of the population was comparatively high for the species.
The total production of the population was estimated to be 95 hg ha−1 of which 39 kg ha−1 was contributed by fry. In older (⋝ IV) fish the production of females (12 kg ha−1) exceeded that (2 kg ha−1) of males, due to differences in their growth and mortality rates. The relatively poor performance of roach in Tjeukemeer, in terms of biomass and production was due to a scarcity of zoobenthos and competition from other species offish. There is no evidence either from this study or the literature that the productive potential of roach in lakes is high, even though macrophytes and detritus can be consumed in significant amounts.  相似文献

This study quantified physiological responses of skilletfish Gobiesox strumosus exposed to thermal and oxic stress. Fish acclimated at 12, 22 and 32° C had low oxygen tolerance values (mean ±s.d .) of 0·40 ± 0·09, 0·40 ± 0·08 and 0·35 ± 0·03, and critical thermal maxima (mean ±s.d .) of 33·2 ± 0·5, 38·1 ± 0·0 and 39·5 ± 0·3° C, respectively. Furthermore, G. strumosus were oxygen conformers at all acclimation temperatures, i.e. the fish allowed oxygen consumption rates to decrease with ambient oxygen concentration. High temperature tolerance, low oxygen tolerance and decreasing metabolic rates during hypoxic events allow the fish to survive harsh environmental conditions encountered in their natural environment.  相似文献

Free-ranging Humboldt penguin (HP, Spheniscus humboldti) populations are under pressure from resource competition with industrial fisheries, habitat loss, and El Niño Southern Oscillation events. Foraging patterns for this top marine predator change during periods of aberrant oceanographic conditions and scarce fish stock numbers. These radical dietary fluctuations can lead to poor fertility, early embryonic death, poor hatchability, suppressed immune function, high chick mortality, and illness. To understand the variability of nutrient status in reproductive seasons, we measured select circulating nutrient concentrations (fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and carotenoids, fatty acids, amino acids, minerals, and electrolytes) of 105 HP at Punta San Juan, Peru during the first reproductive seasons of 2007 and 2008. We determined significant differences in nutrient status between sexes, years of sampling, and reproductive stages. Males (4.5 ± 0.38 kg) weighed more than females (4.0 ± 0.29 kg) and exhibited higher concentrations of vitamin A (0.71 ± 0.11 vs. 0.61 ± 0.12 µg/ml) and docosahexaenoic acid (6.70 ± 1.61 vs. 5.65 ± 1.59%). Males also displayed lower concentrations of β-carotene (0.01 ± 0.01 vs. 0.012 ± 0.001 µg/ml) and phosphorus (3.43 ± 0.83 vs. 4.40 ± 1.66 mg/dl). Comparison between the 2 years showed most circulating amino acid concentrations were higher in 2007. Significant differences in circulating amino acids and vitamins were also noted between different reproductive stages. These results demonstrate concentrations of nutrients can vary due to the physiological state of the animal, as well as the overall dynamics of their marine ecosystem habitat.  相似文献
