The proportion of labeled 14C-glycerol incorporated into phospholipids and the fatty acid composition of three phospholipids in germinating seeds and seedlings of chilling-sensitive lima beans (Phaseolus lunatus L.) and chilling-resistant broad beans (Vicia faba L.) and peas (Pisum sativum L.) at 10 and 25 C were determined. During the imbibition of seeds (first 24 hours), lima beans were sensitive to chilling injury at 10 C and a higher proportion of label was incorporated into phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol than in broad beans and peas. Broad beans and peas incorporated a higher proportion of label into phosphatidylcholine. The oleic acid content of phosphatidylcholine was higher and linolenic acid content was lower in peas and broad beans than in lima beans at 10 and 25 C. The unsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio was much higher for the chilling-resistant seeds than for the chilling-sensitive ones. In the seedling stage, the proportion of label incorporated into the four major phospholipids was similar in the three species regardless of temperature treatment. The fatty acid content of the phospholipids examined was not different in the three species in the seedling stage.  相似文献

This study evaluated whether grass intercropping can be used to alleviate Fe deficiency chlorosis in dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown in high pH, calcareous soils with low organic matter. Field studies were conducted at the University of Wyoming Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center in 2009 and 2010. Black- and navy beans were grown alone or intercropped with annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), oat (Avena sativa L.), corn (Zea mays L.), or spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in a two-factor factorial strip-plot randomized complete block design. All four grass species increased chlorophyll intensity in dry beans. However, grass species did not increase iron (Fe) concentration in dry bean tissues suggesting inefficient utilization of Fe present in the dry bean tissues. In 2009, nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) and manganese (Mn) concentration in bean tissue were greater in bean monoculture than in grass intercropped beans. Bean monoculture also had greater soil NO3-N concentrations than grass intercropped treatments. In 2009, grass intercrops reduced dry bean yield >25% compared to bean monoculture. Annual ryegrass was the least competitive of the four annual grass species. This suggests that competition from grasses for nutrients, water, or light may have outweighed benefits accruing from grass intercropping. Additional studies are required to determine the appropriate grass and dry bean densities, as well as the optimum time of grass removal.  相似文献

Summary The purpose of this study was to investigate the phytotoxicity of nitrapyrin 2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl)pyridine to sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) under different N regimes and to see if N forms affect the phytotoxicity of nitrapyrin. Sunflower was grown in pot culture for 21 days and was fertilized with (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3 and NaNO3 to provide 0, 100 and 200 ppm N and with nitrapyrin application of 0 and 20 ppm. All N-treated sunflower plants in all N regimes and regardless of titrapyrin treatment produced more root and shoot dry weights and contained a significantly higher N than untreated check. Nitrapyrin toxicity appeared as a curling of leaf margin and a tendril type of stem growth, the visible toxicity symptoms decreased in the order: (NH4)2SO4>NH4NO3>NaNO3. Furthermore nitrapyrin addition suppressed sunflower growth in each N regime, the suppressing effect being greater with (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 than as with NaNO3. Although, shoot growth from plants receiving nitrapyrin was not significantly affected by any N regime, root growth of nitrapyrin-treated plants was somewhat restricted by NH4 +−N nutrition relative to NO3 −N nutrition.  相似文献

Rhizobium tropici CIAT899 induced chlorosis in the leaves of its symbiotic hosts, common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum Urb.), and Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. Chlorosis induction by strains CIAT899 and CT9005, an exopolysaccharide-deficient mutant of CIAT899, required carbon substrate. When the bacteria were added at planting in a solution of mannitol (50 g/liter), as few as 103 cells of CIAT899 were sufficient to induce chlorosis in bean plants. All carbon sources tested, including organic acids and mono- and disaccharides, supported chlorosis induction. The addition of a carbon source did not affect the growth rate or the population density of CT9005 in the bean plant rhizosphere. Cell-free filtrates of cultures of CT9005 did not induce detectable chlorosis. All type B strains of R. tropici tested also induced chlorosis in common bean. Type A strains of R. tropici and all other species of bacteria tested did not induce chlorosis. Several lines of evidence indicated that nodulation was not required for chlorosis induction. Strain RSP900, a pSym-cured derivative of CIAT899, induced chlorosis in wild-type P. vulgaris. In addition, NOD125, a nodulation-defective line of common bean, developed chlorosis when inoculated with CIAT899, but did not develop nodules. CIAT899 consistently induced severe chlorosis in the leaves of the nonhost legumes alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and Berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.), and induced chlorosis in 29 to 58% of the plants tested of sunflower, cucumber, and tomato seedlings, but it did not induce chlorosis in the leaves of corn or wheat. Chlorosis induction in nonhost plants also required carbon substrate. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that R. tropici type B strains produce a chlorosis-inducing factor that affects a wide range of plant species.  相似文献

Anagrus atomus L. is an important egg parasitoid of the green leafhopper Empoasca decipiens Paoli. In this study the ability of the parasitoid to locate and parasitize its host was investigated on four host plants, i.e., broad beans (Vicia faba L.), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), and French beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). For each plant species, the behavior of the parasitoid was observed on E. decipiens infested and noninfested plants. Searching and oviposition behavior were characterized by drumming, probing, and resting. Parasitoids spent significantly less time on non-infested than infested plants, 274.5 and 875.7 s, respectively, and no probing behavior was observed on non-infested plants. Frequency of resting behavior was significantly greater on non-infested than on infested plants. Total foraging time was significantly longer on infested than on non-infested plants, indicating that A. atomus females can efficiently discriminate between leaves with and without infestation. Parasitism of A. atomus was influenced by parasitoid density, with the highest parasitism rate (64.0%) obtained at a density of 10 A. atomus females/0.1356 m2 but the number of parasitized eggs per female and the searching efficiency decreased with increasing parasitoid density.  相似文献

This paper describes a method for manipulating plant membrane fatty acid compositions without altering growth temperature or other conditions. Tween-fatty acid esters carrying specific fatty acids were synthesized and applied to various organs of plants growing axenically in glass jars. Treated plants incorporated large amounts of exogenous fatty acids into all acylated membrane lipids detected. Fatty acids were taken up by both roots and leaves. Fatty acids applied to roots were found in leaves, while fatty acids applied to leaves appeared in both leaves higher on the plant and in roots, indicating translocation (probably in the phloem). Foliar application was most effective; up to 20% of membrane fatty acids of leaves above the treated leaf and up to 40% of root membrane fatty acids were exogenously derived. Plants which took up exogenous fatty acids changed their patterns of fatty acid synthesis such that ratios of saturated to unsaturated fatty acids remained essentially unaltered. Fatty acid uptake was most extensively studied in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.), but was also observed in other species, including maize (Zea mays L.), mung beans (Vigna radiata L.), peas (Pisum sativum L.), petunia (Petunia hybrida L.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Potential applications of this system include studying internal transport of fatty acids, regulation of fatty acid and membrane synthesis, and influences of membrane fatty acid composition on plant physiology.  相似文献

Plant extracts, made by grinding 2 g of fresh tissue in 5 ml of water, were toxic to Tylenchorhynchus dubius and Hoplolaimus spp. Such extracts from leaves and stems of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and leaves of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were most toxic; those from leaves of corn (Zea mays L.), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) and rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense L.) were less toxic; and extracts of bean roots were nontoxic. Nematode movement slowed markedly within 1 hr in tobacco leaf extract, and within 4 hr in bean leaf extract; both extracts completely inactivated or killed 95% of the nematodes in 24 hr. Heating leaf extract 10 min at 80 C eliminated toxicity. Absorption of fusicoccin, a phytotoxin produced by Fusicoccum amygdali Del., increased the toxicity of tomato leaf extracts, whereas water extracts of acetone-extracted powder preparations of leaves were about 15-fold more toxic than water extracts of fresh tissue. Addition of homogenized leaves of bean, tobacco and tomato to soil significantly reduced nematode populations within 3 days.  相似文献

Summary In a 3 year field study, the effect of two rotations, paddy (Oryza sativa L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), mung (Phaseolus aureus L.) and corn (Zea mays L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), mung (Phaseolus aureus L.) on wheat yield and chemical, physical and biological properties of soil was evaluated. Grain yield of the wheat sown after paddy during 1972–73, 1973–74 and 1974–75 was lesser by 0,300 and 390 kg/ha respectively than that of the wheat following corn. The reduction in the yield of wheat was attributed to relatively higher NPK removal by paddy, greater immobilization of N applied to wheat and deterioration of soil physical conditions in the paddy field. Total NPK removal by paddy average 131 kg/ha more than that by corn. Sharp increase in bacterial population of soil during early growth of wheat that followed paddy and the concurrent less available N in soil and low N content in wheat plants suggested that the N applied to wheat was immobilised to organic form. The increase in soil bulk density and particle dispersion ratio and decrease in water storage in deeper soil layers in the paddy field probably restricted the root proliferation and growth of wheat.  相似文献

Western flower thrips (WFT), Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is an important pest of French beans in Kenya. However, information on the feeding activity and oviposition preference of WFT on crop and weed hosts associated with French beans in Kenya and other parts of the world is lacking. To determine the feeding and oviposition preference of WFT for crop and weed plants commonly encountered in French bean fields in Kenya, no‐choice and choice experiments were conducted using four important crop and weed plants. Among the crop plants tested, highest feeding and oviposition activity of WFT was recorded on courgette/zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) and French beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Spinach beet (Beta vulgaris L.) and sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) were of relatively minor importance for feeding and oviposition. Among the weeds tested, gallant soldier (Galinsoga parviflora Cav.) was the most preferred host plant for feeding and oviposition compared with Chinese lantern (Nicandra physaloides L.), wild crucifer (Erucastrum arabicum Fisch. & C.A. Mey.) and pigweed (Amaranthus hybridus L.). Phaseolus vulgaris was the most preferred host for feeding and oviposition in the presence of G. parviflora, E. arabicum and A. hybridus. A positive correlation between the number of feeding punctures and the number of eggs oviposited by WFT on crop and weed plants was observed. The results of this study show that P. vulgaris, C. pepo and G. parviflora are both relatively good feeding and oviposition hosts of WFT. Cucurbita pepo and G. parviflora may serve as potential sources of WFT outbreaks within French bean fields.  相似文献

Ozone toxicity was studied in peas, beans, and tobacco (BelB and Bel W3). These experiments showed that ozone toxicitywas related to the rates of ethylene biosynthesis. Sensitivityto ozone was reduced if ethylene biosynthesis was inhibitedafter treatment with aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG). Similarly, plants that were able to reduce or prevent stress ethylene formationwere less sensitive after both short- and long-term exposureto ozone. Plants conditioned by longer exposures to ozone havelow rates of ethylene formation and this may be why brief ozoneexposures may be more phytotoxic than prolonged fumigations. Parameters related to leaf photosynthesis were evaluated in three genotypes of common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with contrasting tolerance to Mn toxicity. Two short-term studies in solution culture were used to assess the effect of excess Mn on CO2 assimilation in mature and immature leaves. Mn toxicity decreased total chlorophyll content only in immature leaves, with a consequent reduction of leaf CO2 assimilation. Mature leaves that showed brown speckles characteristic of Mn toxicity, did not suffer any detriment in their capacity to assimilate CO2, at least in a 4-day experiment. Stomatal conductance and transpiration were not affected by the presence of high levels of Mn in leaf tissue. Lower stomatal conductance and transpiration rates were observed only in leaves with advanced chlorosis. Differences among genotypes were detected as increased chlorosis in the more sensitive genotype ZPV-292, followed by A-283 and less chlorosis in the tolerant genotype CALIMA. Since CO2 assimilation expressed per unit of chlorophyll was not different between high-Mn plants and control plants, we conclude that the negative effect of Mn toxicity on CO2 assimilation can be explained by a reduction in leaf chlorophyll content.  相似文献

Effectiveness of different iron (Fe) foliar sprays for leaf chlorosis correction and grain Fe boosting was studied in field peas under Fe deficiency. No chlorophyll reduction was observed in Fe deficient plants treated with foliar sprays. EDDHA [ethylenediamine-N,N′-bis(2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid)] followed by FeSO4 (73.7?mg/l Fe) treated at the start of flowering was most responsive in correcting chlorosis and increasing shoot dry biomass in peas. Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy data showed significant increase of Fe in grains while treated with all foliar sprays at the time of grain filling in Fe-deficient plants. Among them, FeSO4 (73.7?mg/l Fe) was the most efficient in biofortifying Fe in mature grain under Fe deficiency in peas. Results also pinpoint that flowering is a suitable time for applying foliar sprays to boost Fe in mature grains. Taken together, application of Fe foliar sprays facilitated both chlorosis correction and Fe boosting in peas and can be further used by breeders and farmers.  相似文献

Growth of broad beans infected by Uromyces viciae-fabae   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effect of artificially regulating the level of a rust infection with Uromyces viciae-fabae (Pers.) Schroet. on the growth and yield of two cultivars of Viciafaba L. (broad beans) was examined in 1973/74. Disease decreased leaf area ratio without increasing net assimilation rate particularly during the stage of ‘pod filling’. Consequently, assimilate supply to developing beans was diminished and the weight of beans per pod and yield of beans per plant decreased. This is unlike the effect of Botrytis fabae Sard, on broad beans which reduces yield by decreasing the number of pods per plant. This suggests that the two leaf spotting pathogens decrease yield in different ways and so may require different approaches to minimise yield losses.  相似文献

The effects of salinity on the morphogenesis of various organs of kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) plants grown in nosterile culture and of explants from these organs grown in vitro were studied. Salt stress was produced by adding NaCl (0.5 and 1.0%) to water or the Murashige and Skoog nutrient medium. Salt stress suppressed rhizogenesis, particularly profoundly in the salt-sensitive beans. Callus cultures obtained from different organs differed in their salt tolerance, which was evaluated from the callus growth. Under salinity conditions, homologous structures of the two crops differed markedly in survival and regeneration. Different organs and corresponding explants of one and the same plant differed in the threshold sensitivity to salinity, which indicates the organ-specificity of salt resistance.  相似文献

Rhizobium strains nodulating summer legumes cow pea [Vigna unguiculata (L.)], green gram [V. radiata (L.) (Wilczek)], black gram [V. mungo (L.) (Hepper)] and cluster bean [Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) (Taub)] and a winter legume chick pea [Cicer arietinum (L.)] were surveyed in the Northern Plains of India and screened for hydrogenase activity to determine distribution of Hup character in the native ecosystem. It was observed that 56% of the Rhizobium strains of summer legumes were Hup+ whereas that of the winter legume, chick pea, were all Hup-. Ex planta acetylene reduction activity was observed in most of the Hup+ but not in the Hup- strains of any of the host species. In summer legume, mixed inoculation of Hup+ and Hup- strains, under sterilized as well as unsterilized soil conditions, showed that the host species were predominantly nodulated with Hup+ strain.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Seasonal population growth rates for the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris, were determined in three different host plant habitats; alfalfa, Medicago sativa (L.), clover, Trifolium pratense (L.), and peas, Pisum sativum (L.); over four years and eight places. It was possible to estimate a common intrinsic rate of increase for each host plant habitat.
  • 2 An analysis of the relative influence of temporal, spatial and host plant habitat variation showed that the host plant habitat was most important in determining the growth rates of the populations, both in rate of build-up and decline.
  • 3 Patterns of alate production in the three different habitats differed substantially between the annual peas and the two perennial legumes. During the summer, alate production was large and rapid in peas and remained low and constant in clover and alfalfa
  • 4 Parasitism was highest in peas. The species composition of parasitoids differed between crops.
  • 5 Aphids in annual peas had a higher intrinsic rate of increase and a faster rate of decline than in the two perennial legumes. This explains the presence of both migratory and sedentary forms among pea aphids.

Stomatal Diffusion Resistance of Snap Beans. II. Effect of Light   总被引:7,自引:3,他引:4       下载免费PDF全文
Kanemasu ET  Tanner CB 《Plant physiology》1969,44(11):1542-1546
The effect of light on the stomatal resistance of abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces of snap beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was studied in the growth chamber and in the field. The adaxial stomata required more light to open than the abaxial stomata; the abaxial stomatal apertures were still about 50% open at 1% full sunlight and light-induced closure was never observed under daytime field conditions. A given value of abaxial stomatal resistance was obtained at a given illumination of the abaxial guard cells whether illumination was adaxial or abaxial.  相似文献

In 1981 a two-year field plot experiment was established to assess the effects of quantities (0, 7.5, 15, 30, 60 and 120 t ha−1) of fresh kelp (Macrocystis integrifolia) on crop growth and nutritional response and chemical properties of a fine-textured soil. Soil was analyzed for NO3−N, NH4−N, electrical conductivity, pH, Cl and exchangeable cations (K, Mg, Ca, Mn and Na). The plots were planted to beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) in the first year and peas (Pisum sativum) in the second year. Marketable bean yields increased in the first year with kelp applications up to 60 t ha−1, with yields, emergence and flowering being reduced by the 120 t ha−1 application. Soluble salts (EC) and Cl concentrations in the soil eight days after application increased linearly and sharply with increasing quantities of kelp. Increased K concentration and moisture content, characteristics of plants growing in a salt-stressed soil environment, were measured. A subsequent companion greenhouse experiment confirmed that the reduced bean emergence and growth with 120 t ha−1 applications of kelp were primarily due to soluble salts. The only growth effects upon peas in the second year was a slight reduction in leaf plus stem yields with increasing applications of kelp.  相似文献

The effects of wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) and phytohemagglutinin (PHA) at the concentration of 1 mg/l on the rate of cell division in the root apical meristem of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seedlings were compared. WGA enhanced cell division in the roots of barley and rice approximately similarly as in wheat roots but did not affect division of meristematic cells in the roots of common bean seedlings. In contrast PGA enhanced mitotic activity in the root apical meristem of common bean seedlings but did not affect division in the wheat and barley roots. Seedling treatment with lectins shifted the hormonal balance in them toward accumulation of growth activators (IAA and cytokinins). The relationship between lectin and hormonal systems in the control of cell division is discussed.  相似文献

Changes in canopy structure parameters (leaflet orientation, leaflet inclination and leaf area index) were measured in crops of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in the field as the canopy developed between July and October. These changes were compared with the corresponding changes in seasonal light transmission. The beans showed clear heliotropic behaviour, with preferential orientation of leaflets towards the sun’s beam, especially on sunny days. Nevertheless a significant proportion of the leaves pointed in other directions, with as much as 20% oriented towards the north. The highest proportion of leaf inclinations was in the range 30–40° on cloudy days and between 40° and 50° on sunny days. Two methods were compared for assessing changes in light transmission: (a) the use of a Sunfleck Ceptometer and (b) the use of continuous records obtained with sensors installed in the canopy. Over the growth period studied, the total of the leaf plus stem area indices (L S) increased from 0.26 to 5.2 with the transmission coefficient (τ) for photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), obtained using the Ceptometer, correspondingly decreasing from 0.72 to 0.05, and the canopy extinction coefficient decreasing from 1.4 to 0.62. The continuous records of light transmission gave generally similar estimates of τ. Some contrasting leaf angle distribution functions were compared for estimation of L S from the light measurements. The best leaf angle function to predict L S from the observed light transmission was a conical function corrected by the degree of heliotropism.
