On Rosemary Island, a small continental island (11 km2) in the Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia, snails of the genus Rhagada have extremely diverse morphologies. Their shells vary remarkably in size and shape, with the latter ranging from globose to keeled‐flat, spanning the range of variation in the entire genus. Based primarily on variation in shell morphology, five distinct species are currently recognized. However, a study of 103 populations has revealed continuity of shell form within a very closely‐related group. A phylogenetic analysis of specimens from Rosemary Island, and other islands in the Dampier Archipelago, indicates that much of the morphological variation has evolved on the island, from within a monophyletic group. Within the island, snails with distinct shell morphologies could not be distinguished based on variation in mitochondrial DNA or their reproductive anatomy. The shell variation is geographically structured over a very fine scale, with clines linking the extreme forms over distances less than 200 m. Although there is no evidence that the different forms have evolved in isolation or as a consequence of drift, there is a strong association between keeled‐flat shells and rocky habitats, suggesting that shell shape may be of adaptive significance. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 756–769.  相似文献

Intraspecific trends in freshwater mussel (unionoid) shells that are consistently associated with differences in the mussels' sex and/or parasitic infestation can potentially be used to reconstruct sex ratios or parasitic levels of modern and ancient unionoid populations. In contrast to morphological patterns within mammal species, such dimorphic trends within unionoid species are, however, poorly understood. This study investigates, for the first time, to what extent sex, trematode infection and indirect habitat effects determine shell morphology in the freshwater mussel Anodonta anatina. Three of the five study populations displayed significant sexual shell width dimorphism. Here, shells of females were significantly wider than males, probably as a result of altered shell growth to accommodate marsupial gills. In two of these populations, female shells were additionally significantly thinner than those of males, which could be a result of resource depletion by offspring production. Two other A. anatina populations showed no significant dimorphic patterns, and our results indicate that this interpopulational difference in the degree of sexual dimorphism may reflect the overarching effect of habitat on morphology. Thus, populations in the most favourable habitats exhibit faster growth rates, attain larger maximum sizes and produce more offspring, which results in more swollen gills and consequently more inflated shells of gravid females compared to less fecund populations. None of the populations showed any evidence for sexual dimorphism in overall size, growth rate, sagittal shape and density of shells. In addition to sexual dimorphisms, infestation by bucephalid trematode parasites (Rhipidocotyle sp.) significantly altered sagittal and lateral shell shape of A. anatina in one of the populations, with infected specimens growing wider and more elongated. Extant neritimorphs with planktotrophic larval development have a convolute smooth larval shell which is internally resorbed. The oldest known larval shells of this type are of Triassic age. Well-preserved Late Palaeozoic neritimorph specimens have larval shells of two or more rapidly increasing well separated whorls. These larval shells resemble planktotrophic caenogastropod larval shells. This type of larval shell is possibly plesiomorphic in neritimorphs and caenogastropods. Permian/Pennsylvanian neritimorphs (Naticopsis, Trachyspird) have smooth larval shells (Naticopsidae) or larval shells with strong axial ribs (Trachyspiridae new family). The convolute low-spired round shell shape of modern neritimorphs is causally linked with the resorption of the inner teleoconch and protoconch whorls. Modern neritimorph shells with a uniform, undifferentiated inner lumen have probably evolved from naticopsid ancestors which lack resorption. It is possible that an elevated spire, deep sutures and protruding spiral larval shells would have made such internally undifferentiated shells more vulnerable for mechanical destruction and prédation. Suggestions that coiling evolved independently in neritimorphs and other Gastropoda are unlikely and contrast with the fossil record. The modern neritid larval shell has probably evolved from relatively low-spired smooth naticopsid larval shells like those reported here.  相似文献

Endemic land snails of the genus Mandarina of the oceanic Bonin Islands offer an exceptional example of habitat and character divergence among closely related species. In this study, microhabitat differences between sympatric ground-dwelling species were studied by distinguishing habitats on the basis of vegetation and types of litter. In all sites where two ground species coexisted, segregation occurred with each species showing preference for the microhabitat in which they were found. When they were in sympatry, one species was predominant in relatively wet and sheltered sites and the other in relatively dry and exposed sites. Although most species can live in both types of habitat, occupation by one species is inhibited by occupation by another. This suggests that competitive interaction between sympatric species caused segregation. Except for populations that have undergone interspecific hybridization, no examples were found of sympatric populations of two ground species sharing a similar shell colour. Species that were predominant in relatively wet and sheltered sites possessed shells with dark coloration and their colour patterns were mostly of one type. Species that were predominant in relatively dry and exposed sites possessed shells with bright coloration and their color patterns were polymorphic. Most populations from areas in which single species were distributed had shells with medium coloration. Microhabitat differentiation between sympatric species possibly caused diversification of shell colour, because bright shells are advantageous in sites where snails are largely exposed, and dark shells are advantageous in sites in where they are mostly sheltered from sunlight. In addition, frequency-dependent selection by predators hunting by sight may have operated to maintain colour polymorphism in the populations which are restricted to exposed habitats by competition with other sympatric species. This reveals the importance of interaction among closely related species as a cause of diversification in ecological and morphological traits.  相似文献

The ophiuroid arm contains a series of vertebral ossicles that form an articulated internal skeleton. Ontogenetic, serial, and interspecific variation in these skeletal elements are investigated using morphometric data from 35 species of brittle-stars (Order Ophiurae). Multiple ossicles were sampled from each individual and several individuals were sampled from each species to reconstruct serial and ontogenetic changes in vertebral morphology. Within species, ontogenetic and serial allometries are not statistically different. These data support 'Jackson's law of localized stages' (Jackson, 1899; Clark, 1914), which proposes that serial variation along the arm reflects ontogenetic stages of ossicle growth.
A multivariate analysis of interspecific variation shows two major vertebral forms: ossicles with a proximal depression and distal keel, and ossicles lacking these features. Variation within these groups is largely continuous, but individual species show distinct shape differences and unique allometric patterns of serial variation. These results suggest that vertebral ossicle variation among species can be described by: 1) variation in initial shape; and 2) variation in the allometric trajectory along the proximal-distal axis.
In all species, the most proximal ossicles within the disk show a non-keeled morphology. In species with keeled arm ossicles, however, there is an abrupt transition within the disk between non-keeled and keeled vertebral forms. A single ossicle, having features of both vertebral types, occurs at this site. The taxonomic distribution of the two vertebral forms and the anatomical transition between forms is discussed with reference to current classification systems and recent phylogenetic schemes for the Ophiuroidea.  相似文献

Geographic variation in the marine, Indo-Pacific cowry, Cypraea caputserpentis, involves clinal variations that parallel the ontogenetic development of adult shell characteristics. Cypraea caputdraconis, a closely related species endemic to Easter Island and Sala y Gómez, is morphologically similar to juvenile C. caputserpentis. Using multivariate measures of size and shape, I examine these patterns as a possible outcome of heterochrony, or changes in the timing of developmental events in ontogeny. Whorl-expansion rates of juvenile shells are significantly higher in C. caputdraconis when compared to C. caputserpentis and are negatively correlated with surface seawater temperatures among populations of C caputserpentis. High expansion rates, often associated with slow growth, result in a delay in the onset of lateral callus development and subsequent paedomorphosis. Ontogenetic trajectories calculated from growth series of adult and preadult shells indicate that paedomorphosis results from the combined effects of neoteny and post-displacement. Paedomorphosis among cowries may result from the advantages of larger body size relative to shell size under reduced predation intensities and associated increases in fecundity.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphisms in shell-bearing snails expressed by characteristic traits of their respective shells would offer the possibility for a lot of studies about gender distribution in populations, species, etc. In this study, the seven main shell characters of the snail Cochlostoma septemspirale were measured in both sexes: (1) height and (2) width of the shell, (3) height and (4) width of the aperture, (5) width of the last whorl, (6) rib density on the last whorl, and (7) intensity of the reddish or brown pigments forming three bands over the shell. The variation of size and shape was explored with statistical methods adapted to principal components analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). In particular, we applied some multivariate morphometric tools for the analysis of ratios that have been developed only recently, that is, the PCA ratio spectrum, allometry ratio spectrum, and LDA ratio extractor. The overall separation of the two sexes was tested with LDA cross validation.The results show that there is a sexual dimorphism in the size and shape of shells. Females are more slender than males and are characterised by larger size, a slightly reduced aperture height but larger shell height and whorl width. Therefore they have a considerable larger shell volume (about one fifth) in the part above the aperture. Furthermore, the last whorl of females is slightly less strongly pigmented and mean rib density slightly higher. All characters overlap quite considerably between sexes. However, by using cross validation based on the 5 continuous shell characters more than 90% of the shells can be correctly assigned to each sex.  相似文献

To decide whether a physiological role can be attributed to enzymatic activity with respect to crystal formation and biomineralization of the first larval shell, carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity was measured in embryos and larvae of the blue mussels Mytilus edulis L. Also, CA activity was determined in the mantle edge and gonads of adult mussels with different shell length and condition index. The intention was to find a possible correlation between CA activity and adult shell calcification, i.e. gonadal maturation. The comparison of CA activity in different developmental stages of mussels and the results of an X-ray diffraction study of biomineralization processes in embryonic and larval shells indicate that CA activity is maximal at the end of several developmental stages. Consequently, the increase in CA activity precedes some physiological changes, i.e. the somatoblast 2d formation and the occurrence of the first calcite and quartz crystals in embryos, shell field formation in the gastrula stage, shell gland and periostracum production in trochophores, and rapid aragonite deposition in larval prodissoconch I and prodissoconch II shells. Furthermore, it was found that in adult mussels CA activity was quite variable and that in the mantle edge it was frequently inversely related to the activity in the gonad. The small helicid snail Heterostoma paupercula occurs in the Azores and Madeira. Previously regarded as a single species, it was split into two genera on the basis of variation in shell morphology and genital anatomy: Heterostoma having a toothed shell and being hemiphallic, while Steenbergia had a toothless shell and was euphallic. This division was first questioned when toothed shells {Heterostoma) in the Azores were found not to be hemiphallic. In this study the genitalia of 361 specimens from islands in the Madeira archipelago were examined. Four components of the genitalia were measured (penis/epiphallus, flagellum, bursa stalk and bursa) for 158 individuals. Hemiphally was found to be rare, occurring in only a proportion of the populations at two localities and it did not correspond with the expected shell morphology–the shells were untoothed (= Steenbergia) , which is the opposite of that previously described.
Variation in the genitalia was geographically based: Madeira and its nearest neighbour islands forming one group and the Porto Santo islands another. There is no evidence to suggest that the hemiphallic animals are more than an intraspecific form. It is suggested that the variation between the two island groups is reflective of allopatric differentiation. Without für ther evidence of divergence, H. paupercula should be regarded as the sole species throughout the range and the genus Steenbergia should be suppressed.  相似文献

The earliest growth of post‐metamorphic (post‐larval) shells in two species of Eohadrotreta is described from the Cambrian Shuijingtuo Formation of South China. Two different growth patterns can be observed by quantifying developmental variations in size and shape of successive stages of post‐metamorphic shell growth (including the pedicle foramen forming stage, pedicle foramen enclosing stage and intertrough increasing stage) of Eohadrotreta zhenbaensis and Eohadrotreta ? zhujiahensis . The pedicle foramen is never enclosed within the metamorphic shell of E. zhenbaensis , while the enclosed pedicle foramen of E .? zhujiahensis is located directly outside the metamorphic shell after the pedicle foramen enclosing stage. A strongly allometric growth pattern of E. zhenbaensis is demonstrated by the early enclosure of the pedicle foramen; an accelerated lengthening of the ventral intertrough is associated with the development of a more complex dorsal median septum during the intertrough increasing stage. By contrast, E .? zhujiahensis demonstrates possible paedomorphic development by delayed enclosure of pedicle foramen and an associated decreased lengthening of ventral intertrough during the intertrough increasing stage. This ontogenetic developmental sequence represents the marginal accretionary formation and growth of the pedicle foramen, which resembles that of linguloid brachiopods. Furthermore, the developmental process of the pedicle foramen of Eohadrotreta seems to recapitulate the likely evolutionary transition from the Botsfordiidae, with open delthyrium, to the Acrotheloidea, with an enclosed foramen. This study provides a unique opportunity to obtain a complete understanding of the ontogenetic development of the earliest acrotretoids, and casts new light on the phylogeny of lingulate brachiopods.  相似文献

Nuclear ribosomal DNA (internal transcribed spacer region) and chloroplast DNA (trnL-trnF region) were sequenced from 40 samples representing all three genera (Brachelyma, Dichelyma, and Fontinalis) and 18 species of the aquatic moss family, Fontinalaceae. Phylogenetic reconstructions recovered from separate and combined analyses were used to test the hypotheses that Fontinalis and Dichelyma are monophyletic (Brachelyma is monotypic), that groups of species within Fontinalis based on leaf morphology (keeled, concave, plane) form monophyletic groups, and that species delineation based on morphological characters within Fontinalis are congruent with nr- and cpDNA gene trees. Using Brachelyma subulata to root the tree, both Dichelyma and Fontinalis are monophyletic and patristically divergent (each united by >15 synapomorphic mutations). Groups of species within Fontinalis defined by leaf morphology are polyphyletic and it is clear that leaf morphology is labile in the genus. As defined morphologically, species of Fontinalis are nonmonophyletic for both nr- and cpDNA sequences and populations of some morphological taxa are separated in widely divergent clades. Molecular evidence suggests that at least some morphospecies are artificial, defined by convergent leaf forms. The weight of the evidence indicates that F. antipyretica is positively paraphyletic, with European populations more closely related to (i.e., share a more recent common ancestor with) European endemic species than to North American populations that are morphologically conspecific. North American populations are more closely related to North American endemic species.  相似文献

占据适宜的贝壳对于寄居蟹的发育、繁殖和存活至关重要。尽管很多研究探讨了蟹类对贝壳的选择,但寄居蟹选择多大的贝壳仍不清楚。在实验条件下,本文作者用巴西Anchieta岛上野生红眼寄居蟹( Pagurusbrevidactylus)最常利用的黑衣蟹守螺( Cerithium atratum)和节桑椹螺( Morula nodulosa)进行了贝壳选择实验,通过回归分析确定目标贝类及其大小。观察到寄居蟹对一种独特贝类的选择具有性别意义,从而验证了野外观察结果。雄性明显地倾向选择黑衣蟹守螺的贝壳,而产卵和非产卵的雌性个体对腹足类贝壳的选择差异不显著。尽管两性之间对适宜贝壳的选择存在差异,贝壳适宜度指数(SAI)表明,种群占据那些足够大的贝壳(SAI =1·20±0·23)。红眼寄居蟹对贝壳利用的这种模式可能是为了避免与体型相似同域物种的竞争,从而在后来的生长中减少频繁地更换贝壳。根据目前的数据可以得到以下结论:红眼寄居蟹对贝壳的选择不仅取决于贝壳的参数,而且还与寄居蟹的个体和性选择有关[动物学报51 (5) : 813 -820 , 2005]。  相似文献

Patterns are described for shell penetration by the sublittoral muricid snail Chorus giganteus during predatory attacks on the mussel Semimytilus algosus. Location, form and size of shell penetrations were observed in relation to the size of the predator. The results suggested that positions of the perforations on the mussel shells were related to size of the attacking snail. Smaller snails perforated areas near the shell ligament and in the central zone of the shell, while larger snails more frequently attacked shell borders, principally on the ventral side. These observations may be related to: (a) changes in the process of manipulation of the prey during development of the foot and the shell tooth of the predator, (b) changes in internal structure of the snails related to the shell perforation mechanism, or (c) learned behavior acquired experientially by the snails during early growth. Although in other studies of muricid penetration patterns larger boreholes made in shells of the prey were positively correlated with increasing predator size, this relation did not appear to hold with C. giganteus, as larger specimens often made relatively small shell perforations. Areas of boreholes made in the mussel shells by this snail varied from 0.01 to 1.1 mm(2), and were unusually variable in size and shape, especially when compared with literature results on bores characteristic of other muricid species.  相似文献

Shells of Calliostoma zizyphinum taken from Strangford Lough,N. Ireland are divisible into three distinct colour forms: white(=var lyonsi) intermediate (a pale variegated form) and purple(a dark variegated form). The predominance of white and paleshelled individuals within and the absence of white Calliostomaoutside the lough was confirmed. The proportions of animalswith white and variegated shells at selected sites were almostidentical with those previously documented, suggesting a temporalstability of colour form ratios. No differences in shell thicknessand pedal adhesion were demonstrated between these forms. Snails with white shells reflect radiant heat better, have lightercoloured feet, move more rapidly, show a greater incidence ofshell repair and are more frequently exposed on weed at lowtide, than those with either intermediate or purple shells.Increased proportions of white individuals may be associatedwith high population densities. Under such circumstances, itis suggested that increased mobility may, by increasing dispersion,reduce intraspecific competition. The exploitation of mollusks by the first anatomically modern humans is a central question for archaeologists. This paper focuses on level 8 (dated around ∼ 100 ka BP) of El Harhoura 2 Cave, located along the coastline in the Rabat-Témara region (Morocco). The large quantity of Patella sp. shells found in this level highlights questions regarding their origin and preservation. This study presents an estimation of the preservation status of these shells. We focus here on the diagenetic evolution of both the microstructural patterns and organic components of crossed-foliated shell layers, in order to assess the viability of further investigations based on shell layer minor elements, isotopic or biochemical compositions. The results show that the shells seem to be well conserved, with microstructural patterns preserved down to sub-micrometric scales, and that some organic components are still present in situ. But faint taphonomic degradations affecting both mineral and organic components are nonetheless evidenced, such as the disappearance of organic envelopes surrounding crossed-foliated lamellae, combined with a partial recrystallization of the lamellae. Our results provide a solid case-study of the early stages of the diagenetic evolution of crossed-foliated shell layers. Moreover, they highlight the fact that extreme caution must be taken before using fossil shells for palaeoenvironmental or geochronological reconstructions. Without thorough investigation, the alteration patterns illustrated here would easily have gone unnoticed. However, these degradations are liable to bias any proxy based on the elemental, isotopic or biochemical composition of the shells. This study also provides significant data concerning human subsistence behavior: the presence of notches and the good preservation state of limpet shells (no dissolution/recrystallization, no bioerosion and no abrasion/fragmentation aspects) would attest that limpets were gathered alive with tools by Middle Palaeolithic (Aterian) populations in North Africa for consumption.  相似文献

Molluscs from marginal marine and intra-continental basins of the Iberian Peninsula are described with special emphasis on the early ontogenetic shell formation, which reflects the embryogenesis and larval ecology. The fossils, covering a time span from the Early Oligocene to the Early Pleistocene, are compared to contemporaneous fossil faunas of the Mediterranean and Paratethys, and to extant Mediterranean faunas. Larval shells occur in bivalves and gastropods of Upper Tortonian coastal lagoons near Crevillente (Alicante), indicating marine larval stages and a connection of the adult habitat with the open sea. The euryhaline marginal marine gastropods display planktotrophic larval shells, which enable a marine distribution, but prevented generally euryhaline genera, such as Granulolabium and Terebralia (Cerithioidea, Potamididae), from colonizing continental saline ecosystems. The establishment of athalassic saline populations implies the preadaptational loss of planktotrophy. For the first time lecithotrophic larval development in an athalassic saline system is documented for Potamides gaudryi (Cerithioidea, Potamididae) from the late Middle to early Upper Miocene of the Duero Basin. With regard to the early ontogenetic development, P. gaudryi is distinguished from its possible descendant, the extant Potamides conicus (Blainville, 1829), which represents a direct developer that lacks any larval stage. In comparison to direct development, lecithotrophic larval development was advantageous in the colonization of temporary habitats, such as flood areas. Two different modes of direct development with hatching of crawling young are documented: Feeding on embryonic yolk until the hatching stage and adelphophagy. Adelphophagous embryonic development appears to be advantageous in neritids, thiarids and pulmonates that live in habitats with strong predation of juvenile fishes based on the advanced developmental stage and larger shell size of the hatchlings.  相似文献

On the example of P. subtruncatum, a widely distributed bivalve, we studied the relationship between environmental and morphological variability. The main questions addressed were: (1) are there differences in shell morphology between different populations, (2) are they dependent on sediment composition, hydrology or water chemistry, (3) are there differences in morphological variability between stable and unstable environments. Measurements of specimen from nine sampling sites showed high variability in shell shape and size. Length‐height relation, symmetry, width and dry weight of the shell all varied significantly. Shell shape was significantly correlated with sediment composition and dependent on hydrological connectivity, with higher, asymmetric shells occurring in sandy sediments and lower, rounded shells in muddy sediments. Analysis of intrapopulation morphometric variation showed that variability is higher in habitats with high temporal and spatial environmental variability and lower in habitats with low or reduced environmental heterogeneity. The present study assessed the existence of variation in the shell shape of the pod razor shell (Ensis siliqua) throughout its distributional range in the north-eastern Atlantic. Shells of E. siliqua caught at seven collecting sites (three in Portugal, three in Spain and one in Ireland) were studied by geometric morphometric methods, using both landmark- and contour-based methods. Both approaches (landmarks inside the valves and shell outline) discriminated the shells from Aveiro (centre of Portugal) and Strangford Lough (Ireland) from those caught in the nearby localities (remaining Portuguese and Spanish sites, maximum distance of 550 km by sea). Landmark analysis revealed that shells from Aveiro were more similar to shells from Ireland (~1,500 km far away). Contour analysis revealed that shells from Aveiro had a shape with a comparatively larger height-to-width ratio, whereas shells from Ireland showed a slightly more curved outline than in the remaining sites. Landmark- and contour-based methods provided coherent complementary information, confirming the usefulness of geometric morphometric analyses for discerning differences in shell shape among populations of E. siliqua. A brief review of previous applications of geometric morphometric methods to modern bivalve species is also provided.  相似文献
