Agan, J. C. & Lehman, R. L. Department of Physical and Life Sciences, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi 6300 Ocean Dr., Corpus Christi, TX 78412 USA Benthic algal sampling from high and low energy zones at a selected site on the south jetty at Port Aransas, Texas was completed between April 1999 and February 2000. Species composition and seasonal periodicity in relation to temperature and salinity fluctuations were determined. Dominant plants throughout the year included Bryocladia cuspidata, Bryocladia thyrsigera, Gelidium pusillum, Centroceras clavulatum, Ulva fasciata, and Padina gymnospora. The Rhodophyta dominated species coverage, along with biomass accumulation, although Chlorophyta species accrued the greatest biomass on the high energy side in April and June sampling. Chlorophyta are important to benthic coverage and biomass in the shallowest of waters, despite being fewer in species richness. Phaeophyta species including Petalonia fascia, Hincksia mitchelliae, and Ectocarpus siliculosus were found only during the cooler months. Padina gymnospora was the one exception as it was collected year-round. Results indicate that a greater Rhodophyta abundance was found on the channel side (low energy), where as, the surf side (high energy) contained a greater Chlorophyta abundance. Phaeophyta abundance for both high and low energy sites were comparable possibly due to the greater depth of water in which they are located. Little variance occurred in average biomass accumulation throughout the year. Highest biomass was in August (216.613g dry weight) with lowest occurring in April (107.4205g dry weight).  相似文献

The Texas coastline stretches 595 km across almost 4° of latitude and is home to diverse coastal vegetation assemblages, yet only a handful of studies have documented the climate and vegetative change of this region through the Holocene. We provide a detailed palynological record of Holocene climate for coastal Texas, based upon three subaqueous sediment cores from Corpus Christi Bay and Trinity Bay. Cluster analysis and correspondence analysis were used to investigate changes in palynological assemblages through time within each core. Common to both bays are nonarboreal taxa including Asteraceae (mainly Ambrosia and Helianthus), Chenopodium, Poaceae, and arboreal taxa such as Carya, Pinus, and Quercus. Our record shows that the coastal environments of central Texas began a transition from herbaceous (nonarboreal) dominated vegetation to arboreal vegetation as early as 8.4 ka within Corpus Christi Bay, and 3.8 ka within Trinity Bay. We note flooding events at 8.2, 5.4, and 3.6 ka in Corpus Christi Bay, and at 1.7, 1.2, and 0.8 ka in Trinity Bay. These events were caused by storms, sea level changes including flooding of relict river terraces, and changes in sediment delivery to the bays. The pollen record also shows evidence for changes in fluvial discharge to Corpus Christi Bay at 4.1 and 2.2 ka, and at 1.8 ka in Trinity Bay. We also see Zea mays in Trinity Bay, indicating local Native American agriculture. We observe no significant changes during the middle Holocene Climatic Optimum, and subtle but not statistically significant evidence of more variable climate oscillations than other records from more interior sites in Texas available for the late Holocene. This indicates that coastal Texas’ climate has operated semi-independently from central Texas regions, and was primarily driven by a coast-wise gradient of precipitation and evapotranspiration.  相似文献

Hypoxia (low oxygen conditions) has been found in the southeastern region of Corpus Christi Bay, Texas, U.S.A. every summer since 1988. The objectives of the current study were to determine direct and indirect effects of hypoxia on macrofauna. Direct physiological effects of hypoxia include reduction of benthic abundance, biomass, diversity, species richness and species evenness because of physiological intolerance. Indirect ecological effects of hypoxia include predation of emerging benthic fauna from the sediment. Macrofaunal community characteristics were compared vertically within sediments in caged and uncaged sediment samples in hypoxic and normoxic areas. Cage effects were determined with partial cages, which had reduced flow and no predator exclusion. Dissolved oxygen concentrations during the experiment was monitored in water column profiles and continuous measurement of bottom water in the hypoxic and normoxic areas. Hypoxia in Corpus Christi Bay in 1999 occurred as transient events, many of which were of short duration (less than 1 h) and moderate intensity (around 2 mg l− 1). The macrobenthic community characteristics (i.e., abundance, biomass, species richness, diversity, and evenness) were directly affected by hypoxia as indicated by depressed levels and few deeper-dwelling organisms in the hypoxic area. Community structure was also different between the hypoxic and normoxic areas because of loss of species (presumably due to intolerance to low oxygen) in the hypoxic areas. Benthic invertebrates were found primarily in the surface in the hypoxic area, but there was no significant indication of indirect effects, i.e., increased predation pressure in the hypoxic area. The increased exposure to predation risk may be mitigated by predator avoidance of hypoxic areas. In conclusion, hypoxia in Corpus Christi Bay has negative direct effects on benthic organisms, but no indirect effects, such as increased predation pressure. The most significant finding is the interaction between hypoxia and vertical distributions of infauna, which drive hypoxia intolerant organisms to the surface and out of sediments.  相似文献

In the fall of 2000, there was a red tide episode in the Gulf of Mexico near Corpus Christi, TX. We sampled at the Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas on 25 October 2000. Between 25–27 October 2000, we sampled at the Texas State Aquarium (TSA) near Corpus Christi Bay. Two high-volume samplers were equipped with a filter and a five-stage impactor, respectively. Because the amounts of brevetoxin (PbTx) collected in the air samples were low, we developed a LC/MS technique to analyze the PbTxs. Personal exposure was estimated with a personal filter sampler placed in the lapel of field workers. Concentrations of PbTx-2 and -3 were detected in the samples taken at the TSA; however, PbTx was not detected in the samples from the Marine Science Institute. The concentration of PbTx-2 was between 1.5 and 5.9 ng m−3 and much lower concentrations for PbTx-3. The ratio of PbTx-2 and -3 was 8.7±5.2. In the highest exposure period (26–27 October), PbTx-6 was also detected. No respiratory symptoms were reported at the Marine Science Institute, whereas at the TSA, symptoms including irritation in the nose and throat, and itchy skin were reported among seven field study workers. The PbTx concentrations estimated from both high-volume impactor and filter samplers were similar. The mass median aerodynamic diameters were between 7 and 9 μm (geometric standard deviation of 1.6), a relatively large size for inhaled ambient particles. Inhaled particles of this size would be predominantly deposited in the upper respiratory tract (nasal, oral, and pharyngeal area), and subsequent respiratory irritation could result from the presence of the particles themselves or from toxins associated with the particles. Information gained from these studies will aid in evaluations of the human risk associated with inhalation of red tide aerosols.  相似文献

The eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin) is an economically and ecologically valuable marine bivalve occurring in the Gulf of Mexico. This study builds upon previous research that identified two divergent populations of eastern oysters in the western Gulf of Mexico. Allelic and genotypic patterns from 11 microsatellite markers were used to assess genetic structure and migration between the previously described oyster populations in Texas. The main findings are as follows: (1) there are two distinct populations (FST = 0.392, P < 0.001) of oysters that overlap in the Corpus Christi/Aransas Bay estuarine complex in Texas, (2) the distribution of genotypes among individuals in the contact zone suggests limited hybridization between populations, (3) the variables of salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and depth are not correlated with allele frequencies on reefs in the contact zone or when analyzed across Texas, and (4) there is little evidence of directional selection acting on the loci assayed here, although patterns at four markers suggested the influence of balancing selection based on outlier analyses. These results are consistent with long‐term historical isolation between populations, followed by secondary contact. Recent hydrological changes in the area of secondary contact may be promoting migration in areas that were previously inhospitable to eastern oysters, and observed differences in the timing of spawning may limit hybridization between populations. Comparison of these findings with the results of an earlier study of oysters in Texas suggests that the secondary contact zone has shifted approximately 27 km north, in as little as a 23‐year span.  相似文献

The temperature tolerances of 24 tropical macroalgae collected on Hainan Island (P.R. China) were investigated. For some isolates, growth response curves were also determined. The upper survival temperatures (USTs, 32–37°C) of these tropical west Pacific strains are similiar to those of tropical Atlantic species. With regard to their lower survival temperatures (LSTs) the species investigated show high variations: 12 species have LSTs between 16 and 7°C (Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) Lamx. var esperi J, Ag., Centroceras clavulatum (C. Ag) Mont., Falkenbergia hillebrandii (Bornet) Falkenberg, Gelidiopsis intricata (Ag.) Vickers, Halymenia maculata J. Ag., Hypnea cenomyce J. Ag., Hypnea spinella (C. Ag.) Kütz., Gracilaria changii (Xia et Abott) Abott, Chang et Xia, Dictyopteris repens (Okam.) Boerg., Laurencia cartilaginea Yamada, Gelidium pusillum (Stackh.) Le Jol., Laurencia sp.). Their LSTs and temperature requirements for growth (range: 15–30 °C, optimum: 25–30 °C) are mostly similar to those of tropical west Atlantic and amphi-Atlantic (sub)tropical macroalgae as well as to tropical isolates of species with an Atlantic tropical to warm-temperate distribution. The remaining 12 species have LSTs between 6 and 1 °C (Ulva conglobata Kjellm., Ulva fasciata Delile, Padina boryana Thivy, Dictyosphaeria cavernosa (Forssk.) Boerg., Boodlea composita (Harv.) Brand, Boergesenia forbesii (Harv.) Feldm., Cladophora vagabunda (L.) van den Hoek, Enteromorpha compressa (L,) Grev., Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Link, Gracilaria tenuistipitata Chang et Xia, var liui Chang et Xia, Monostroma nitidum Wittr. and Valonia aegagropila C. Ag.). Their LSTs are mostly similar to those of Atlantic macroalgae with a tropical to (warm-) temperate distribution. The results are discussed with respect to the factors which may have triggered the development of the temperature requirements of the various species.  相似文献

This paper examines attachment point theory in detail by testing the fouling attachment of several fouling groups to a microtextured matrix. Static bioassays were conducted on polycarbonate plates with nine equal regions, comprising eight scales of microtexture (4-512 microm) and one untextured region. The microtextures examined were continuous sinusoidal ridges and troughs of defined height and width. Attachment over the microtextured plates was examined for the diatom Amphora sp., the green alga Ulva rigida, the red alga Centroceras clavulatum, the serpulid tube worm Hydroides elegans and the bryozoan Bugula neritina. It was found that the size of the microtexture in relation to the size of the settling propagules/larvae was important in the selection of attachment sites. Attachment was generally lower when the microtexture wavelength was slightly smaller than the width of the settling propagules/larvae and increased when the wavelength was wider than their width. The effect of attachment points was weak for small motile microfoulers (Amphora sp. and U. rigida) (7 microm), strong for large macrofouling larvae (H. elegans and B. neritina) (129-321 microm) and non-existent for the non-motile algal spores (C. clavulatum) (37 microm). This study reinforces the potential of using attachment points to develop surfaces with increased fouling resistance or, alternatively, surfaces which promote the attachment of selected target sizes of motile propagules or larvae.  相似文献

Despite a general paucity of studies on marine algae in Costa Rica, within the red algal order Gelidiales, 9 species are reported from the Caribbean, and 6 species from the Pacific. In this study 5 species from the southeast Caribbean coast and 2 species from the northwest Pacific coast of Costa Rica were collected for DNA sequence and morphological analyses. At the time of this writing, morphological observations of four Caribbean taxa have identified them as Gelidium microdonticum , Pterocladiella capillacea , P. melanoidea , and Gelidiella acerosa. In rbc L sequence analyses, Gelidium microdonticum is resolved within a clade of small Gelidium species predominantly found in the south Atlantic. Two collections representing different forms of Pterocladiella melanoidea sensu Dawson were found to have identical rbc L sequences. These samples were resolved in rbc L trees with a taxon from Texas identified as P. bartlettii and not P. melanoidea from Europe. Comparisons with type material are being made to verify these identifications so that the status of P. melanoidea in the Caribbean may be determined. The unidentified Caribbean taxon is resolved as a distinct species within the Pterocladiella clade as well. Gelidiella acerosa from Caribbean Costa Rica is closely allied with other Caribbean G. acerosa samples in rbc L trees. The two pacific taxa are small intertidal turf species and have not yet been identified. Sequence analyses resolve these taxa within a large clade of Indo-Pacific and Caribbean Gelidium species.

We investigated the interaction of diet and accumulation of UV-absorbing mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) in body tissues and spawn of the sea hare Aplysia dactylomela to determine if MAA accumulation reflects type and level of dietary intake. Food sources were the red algae Acanthophora spicifera, Centroceras clavulatum, and Laurencia sp., and the green alga, Ulva lactuca. Adults were maintained on these foods for 40 days, after which feces were collected and tissues separated by dissection. Field animals were similarly sampled at this time. All spawn from experimental and field animals was collected over the study period. Samples, including seaweed foods, were analysed for six MAAs. Overnight consumption experiments using a variety of common seaweeds and one seagrass from A. dactylomela's habitat showed that the four seaweeds selected as foods were among those best-eaten by Aplysia. After 40 days levels of specific MAAs in the tissues of experimental animals showed excellent correlation with those in their diets, suggesting that the MAAs were dietarily-derived. Relative MAA contents in spawn from all diet groups correlated well with those in spawn from field animals. Commonest MAAs in spawn were porphyra-334, shinorine, and palythine, in this order. Concentrations of these MAAs were maintained at constant levels over time in spawn from all diet groups eating red algae and from field animals. Spawn from the Ulva dietary group showed an initial significant decline in MAA concentrations, but levels stabilized after the first 2 weeks. Skin was rich in porphyra-334 and shinorine, and levels of these in experimental animals correlated well with comparable levels in the skin of field animals. Digestive glands contained high levels of asterina-330, particularly those of the Centroceras dietary group, where concentrations reached a maximum of 21 mg dry g(-1).  相似文献

Cyanobacteria occupy many niches within terrestrial, planktonic, and benthic habitats. The diversity of habitats colonized, similarity of morphology, and phenotypic plasticity all contribute to the difficulty of cyanobacterial identification. An unknown marine filamentous cyanobacterium was isolated from an aquatic animal rearing facility having mysid mortality events. The cyanobacterium originated from Corpus Christi Bay, TX. Filaments are rarely solitary, benthic mat forming, unbranched, and narrowing at the ends. Cells are 2.1 × 3.1 μm (width × length). Thylakoids are peripherally arranged on the outer third of the cell; cyanophycin granules and polyphosphate bodies are present. Molecular phylogenetic analysis in addition to morphology (transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy) and chemical composition all confirm it as a new genus and species we name Toxifilum mysidocida. At least one identified Leptolyngbya appears (based on genetic evidence and TEM) to belong to this new genus.  相似文献

A synoptic sampling of 30 stations in a 25 km x40 km grid closeto the southern California coast revealed that chlorophyll andphytoplankton biomass were higher nearshore and to the south, where relatively large dinoflagellates dominated. A subsurfacechlorophyll maximum was present at each station, near the nitraclineand 10% light level. Nearshore and to the south, these maximarepresented higher levels of phytoplankton biomass than at thesurface whereas at the other stations, chlorophyll maxima couldbe attributed to physiological changes in chlorophyll contentof small flagellated phytoplankton rather than to the accumulationof phytoplankton at depth. Univariate and multivariate statisticalprocedures were used to demonstrate that phytoplankton assemblagesseparated by tens of meters in the vertical were just as differentas those separated by tens of kilometers in the horizontal. We conclude that residence time of water near the coast is ofgreat importance to the determination of the abundance and taxonomiccharacteristics of phytoplankton, and that advection of offshorewater towards the coast was the major determinant of the patternobserved during our study. 1Present address: University of Texas, Port Aransas Marine Laboratory,Port Aransas, TX 78373, USA  相似文献

The main concepts in coastal community ecology have been proposed to explain relatively plain substrate, specially at temperate zones. We show that, on a irregular tropical substratum (a complex system of quarry stones with diverse shapes and sizes), the classical community zonation scheme is only applicable if we simplify the tridimensional substrate arrangement to a single dimensioned universe: the topographic level. Thus, the continuous spatial distribution implicited in "zones" notions is nonexistent. Our study was conducted on a rocky shore at Ubatuba (São Paulo State, Brazil) during one year. Percentual coverage was estimated using the quadrat method located by random coordinates. The topographic level was determined for each sampling element. Analysis of spatial splitting revealed large-scale stratification of the shore into dominiums related to topographical level: 1) Upper Dominium (represented by Chthamalus sp. and Tetraclita spalactifera ); 2) Transition Level (composed of Gymnogongrus griffithsiae , Gelidium aff. pusillum and often Centroceras clavulatum );. and 3) Lower Dominium (mainly Sargassum vulgare and occasionally Padina gymnospora, Dictyopteris delicatula and Grateloupia doryphora ). These dominiums cannot be recognized as "bands" or continuous "zones" in a landscape view of the community. Otherwise, these bands could be observed on a small scale on each large quarry stone.  相似文献

Highly regulated salinity gradients in solar salt pond concentrating sequences provide an opportunity to investigate in situ salinity impacts on aquatic flora and fauna. The Shark Bay Salt solar ponds at Useless Inlet in Western Australia vary in salinity from seawater to four times seawater over the pond sequence. We observed a shift from planktonic to benthic primary productivity as salinity increased. Water column photosynthesis and biomass decreased markedly with increasing salinity, while benthic productivity increased as cyanobacterial mats developed. Correspondingly, productivity shifted from autotrophy to heterotrophy in the water column and from heterotrophy to autotrophy in the benthos. Both shifts occurred at intermediate salinity (S = 110 g kg−1, ρ = 1.087 g cm−3) in the pond sequence, where there was little production by either. Within individual ponds, productivity, algal biomass and physico-chemical conditions were relatively constant over one year, with only water column photosynthesis significantly different between seasons, mostly due to greater winter production. Transitions between benthic and planktonic production and their relative magnitudes appear to be driven mostly by direct responses to salinity stress, but also by changes in nutrient availability and grazing, which are also influenced by salinity.  相似文献

Changes and degradation of seaweed stands in the Northern Adriatic   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Munda  Ivka M. 《Hydrobiologia》1993,260(1):239-253
During the last two decades conditions in the polluted shelf area of the Northern Adriatic became critical, leading to eutrophication and anoxia. They are reflected in changes and degradation of the macrophytobenthos with simultaneous increase of phytoplankton blooms. Pollution-induced changes of the benthic algal vegetation comprise altered zonation patterns and leading algal associations along with a decrease in species number and fresh weight biomass. A reduction or absence of fucoid stands was observed in the eulittoral and sublittoral. Fucus virsoides was in most cases replaced by ephemeral species which form distinct zones during spring and by turf-like mats of Gelidium pusillum.Sublittoral Cystoseira stands were either reduced or absent, replaced by populations of Halopteris scoparta, Dictyota dichotoma, Halopithys incurvus, Padina pavonica and under extreme conditions by Ulva rigida with Scytosiphon lomentaria and Enteromorpha species during spring. A decreased depth penetration of macroalgae was observed in polluted sites. It seems likely that amorphous mucus aggregations resulting probably from excess phytoplankton blooms which were found during summer months of the last few years, have a deleterious effect on macroalgae.  相似文献

Responses of benthic infauna to large scale disturbance by dredged material placement were studied at eight paired (placement and reference) areas in Corpus Christi Bay, Texas in 1995 and 1996. Total infaunal abundance, taxa richness, and the biomass of annelids and molluscs in placement areas no longer differed from that of reference areas approximately one year after placement. Annual secondary production for annelids and molluscs did not differ between placement and reference areas, however mean (± standard error) total annual secondary production at reference areas (53.6 ± 5.8 g AFDW/m2/yr) was greater than that of placement areas (26.2 ± 2.5 g AFDW/m2/yr) due to higher brittle star densities in reference areas. Differences in community structure between placement and reference areas returned to pre-placement levels one year after disturbance. The magnitude of changes in sediment grain size related to disturbance was positively correlated with the degree of convergence of placement area communities with pre-placement and reference communities. Sediment compaction was consistently associated with infaunal taxonomic composition (BIOENV) and increased linearly with time after disturbance. The use of the term “recovery” with reference to recolonization of dredging-related disturbance implies a return to pre-placement ecological conditions that are frequently neither a reality nor a practical expectation for areas that are subject to repeated disturbances. Our characterization of biological responses to dredged material disturbance targeted benchmarks that were linked to both pre-disturbance conditions and differences between disturbed and neighboring undisturbed areas and indicate that impacts persisted less than one year.  相似文献

We tested whether macrobenthic community condition varies significantly with water depth in a variety of regions of Chesapeake Bay, USA. Benthic community condition was characterized using the Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (B-IBI) previously developed for the Bay. We applied two water depth thresholds intended to emphasize the ecological importance and/or anthropogenic impacts upon shallow-water regions. The first threshold of 2 m emphasizes restoring and supporting submerged aquatic vegetation while the second threshold of 4 m emphasizes the zone of maximum anthropogenic impact upon natural ecosystem functions. An a priori expectation is that benthic community condition may worsen with increasing depth, specifically in regions (1) where water column stratification at depth results in prolonged low dissolved oxygen levels or (2) where net deposition at depth results in higher levels of hydrophobic, sediment-bound contaminants. Samples collected from a major tributary of Chesapeake Bay, the York River estuary, spanned the entire salinity range from tidal freshwater to polyhaline. We also tested the shallow-water depth thresholds using data from the Virginia Mainstem of Chesapeake Bay and the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River. These two polyhaline regions are characterized as having the best and worst benthic community condition in Chesapeake Bay. At the scale of the entire tidal York River system, there were no significant differences in benthic community condition with water depth. However, two salinity regions, low mesohaline and polyhaline, had significant depth effects with the shallowest water depth zone significantly different from the other two depth regions. For the low mesohaline region benthic community condition was worse at the shallowest depth and for the polyhaline region the shallowest depth was better comparing the three depth regions. No depth-related differences in the B-IBI were found for the two additional Chesapeake Bay strata, the Virginia Mainstem characterized with the lowest levels of benthic community degradation and for the Southern branch of the Elizabeth River, characterized by the highest levels of benthic community degradation. We conclude that the ecological state of Chesapeake Bay subtidal benthic communities is adequately characterized by randomly sampling all depths without further stratification into shallow and deeper regions.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in vegetation patterns and biomass of benthic algae were recorded over a 14-month period in the rocky eulittoral of the North Sea island of Helgoland. The area is characterized by the dominance ofFucus serratus throughout most of the eulittoral and this is reflected in higher biomass ofF. serratus ranged seasonally from 4.3 kg to 15 kg m–2 in the center of its extensive distribution. Biomass was also recorded monthly, when the plants were present, forBlidingia spp.,Enteromorpha spp.,Ulva lactuca, Fucus spiralis, F. vesiculosus, Porphyra linearis, P. umbilicalis, Chondrus crispus, Corallina officinalis, Dumontia incrassata, Petalonia fascia, P. zosterifolia andScytosiphon lomentaria. New generations of several species which reappeared after a destructive winter storm showed a higher protein content than in the previous year. The winter and early spring flora of Helgoland shows several resemblances in species composition to the summer flora of Scandinavia.  相似文献

Spectral discrimination of coral reef benthic communities   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Effective identification and mapping of coral reef benthic communities using high-spatial and -spectral resolution digital imaging spectrometry requires that the different communities are distinguishable by their spectral reflectance characteristics. In Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, USA, we collected in situ a total of 247 spectral reflectances of three coral species (Montipora capitata, Porites compressa, Porites lobata), five algal species (Dictyosphaeria cavernosa, Gracilaria salicornia, Halimeda sp., Porolithon sp., Sargassum echinocarpum) and three sand benthic communities (fine-grained carbonate sand, sand mixed with coral rubble, coral rubble). Major reflectance features were identified by peaks in fourth derivative reflectance spectra of coral (at 573, 604, 652, 675 nm), algae (at 556, 601, 649 nm) and sand (at 416, 448, 585, 652, 696 nm). Stepwise wavelength selection and linear discriminant function analysis revealed that spectral separation of the communities is possible with as few as four non-contiguous wavebands. These linear discriminant functions were applied to an airborne hyperspectral image of a patch reef in Kaneohe Bay. The results demonstrate the ability of spectral reflectance characteristics, determined in situ, to discriminate the three basic benthic community types: coral, algae and sand.
