Hydrobiological studies in the Straits of Dover show a differencebetween the characteristics of the French coastal water andthe open sea water. A cruise between Boulogne-sur-mer and Dover(October 15, 1985) confirms the existence of a frontal area(4 miles off the French coast). This area is characterized byan increase of the salinity (1%) and decrease of the suspendedmatter content (from 27 to 20 mg l–1), of primary production(from 15 to 3 mg C m–3h–1) and of chlorophyll aconcentration (from 4.5 to 1.5 mg m–3). The presence ofdifferent zooplanktonic species in the two water masses alsocharacterizes this discontinuity. Oncaea sp., Corycaeus anglicus,Centropages typicus and Calanus helgolandicus are indicatorspecies of open sea water, while Cyciopina littoralis and ‘Saphirella’are only present in coastal water.  相似文献

Juvenile loggerhead sea turtles spend more than a decade in the open ocean before returning to neritic waters to mature and reproduce. It has been assumed that this transition from an oceanic to neritic existence is a discrete ontogenetic niche shift. We tested this hypothesis by tracking the movements of large juveniles collected in a neritic foraging ground in North Carolina, USA. Our work shows that the shift from the oceanic to neritic waters is both complex and reversible; some individuals move back into coastal waters and then return to the open ocean for reasons that are still unclear, sometimes for multiple years. These findings have important consequences for efforts to protect these threatened marine reptiles from mortality in both coastal and open-ocean fisheries.  相似文献

Abundances of picoplankton groups were determined by flow cytometryin the Northern South China Sea (SCS) in winter 2004 to studythe dynamics of picoplankton at a coastal front region. Prochlorococcusis more abundant in relatively high temperature and salinitywaters than in nearshore area. Heterotrophic bacteria dominatein total picoplanktonic biomass but keep rather stable in biomassand surface/bottom biomass ratio on both sides of the front.Increases of picophytoplanktonic biomass and their surface/bottombiomass ratio are remarkable mainly owing to the contributionof Synechococcus on the offshore open SCS waters. Temperatureis found to limit the growth of Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus.Picoeukaryotes and heterotrophic bacteria are less sensitiveto the change in hydrographic conditions across the front. Theautotrophic/heterotrophic biomass ratio of picoplankton is lowerin eutrophic coastal waters on the nearshore side relative tothe offshore and oligotrophic open SCS.  相似文献

The most massive components of the microplankton were studied in the open sea waters for the first time at the end of the autumn season. It has been found that abundance of the virio- and bacterioplankton exceeded that observed in winter in the coastal zone. Against the background of a relatively uniform distribution of bacteria, the viral abundance and the lysis-mediated bacterioplankton death rate reached the maximum values in the most cold and salty waters of the northern sea areas.  相似文献

In the French area of the Eastern English Channel, the coastalwaters 3 or 4 miles wide are separated from offshore watersby a coastal front. The phytoplanktonic biomass (B) and production(P) are higher in coastal waters, and an increase of biomasshas been observed at the interface. This frontal biomass, lessproductive, resulted from hydrodynamic accumulation, not dueto local growth. The productivity (P/B) deficit (50%) spreadsover the external area of the front, probably because the biomassis partly constituted of exported inactive coastal phytoplankton.The productivity is higher again in offshore waters. The variationof the pigment pool indicates a stress on phytoplankton in thefront and this ergocline was not productive at the time of thetwo cruises.  相似文献

The neritic area of the coast of Catalonia (north–westMediterranean) has a continental shelf narrower in the northernhalf and broader in the southern half. This area is crossedfrom north to south by a coastal current whose intensity decreasesto the south. Both conditions, together with other local geographicaland hydrographical features, are thought to be the key factorsin determining the distribution of planktonic cnidarian assemblages,along two main variational axes: a north-south axis and a coast-opensea axis. Aiming to find support to this hypothesis, the planktoniccnidarians collected in two seasons of the year 1983 have beenstudied. The first season (April–May) corresponds to thehighest abundance and heterogeneity, and the second (September–October),to the epoch when the cnidarian population is lower, but constant,along the coastal area. In a global principal component analysisthe factor that best explains the group distribution in thearea is the coastal character, as given by the bottom depthof the sampling station. The number of individuals is greaternear the coast (due to the dominance of a euryhaline species,Muggiaea atlantica), but the species number increases towardsthe open sea (due to the addition of more oceanic species, suchas Narcomedusae and Trachymedusae and the effect of a permanenthydrographic front at the shelf-slope boundary). The secondfactor is the latitudinal axis. The northern half of the coastis under the influence of waters favouring a greater numberof species and individuals. On the contrary, the southern halfshows a less marked influence of the north–south current,their cnidarian assemblages being more constant over time. Althoughthe global cnidarian population follows this general pattern,the most abundant and frequent species (M.atlantica and Aglaurahemistoma) show a broad distribution over all the studied areabecause they are rather insensitive to hydrographical variations.  相似文献

Calanus sinicus is a copepod with wide geographical distributionin the continental shelf waters of China. Its occurrence inoceans around Taiwan and Hong Kong is limited by temperatureto winter and spring. We present evidence to show that C. sinicusis carried into the coastal waters of Taiwan and Hong Kong frompopulation centers in the Yellow Sea and the East China Seaby the China Coastal Current during the northeast monsoon periodin winter.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative distribution of surface phytoplankton,as related to hydrographic conditions, was studied in the Gulfof Naples in February 1979. Previous work has shown that the Gulf of Naples is a diversifiedecosystem, due to geographic and hydrographic features as wellas man made eutrophication, that can be subdivided into twomajor parts: a coastal subsystem and an open water one. Hydrographic analysis of the winter situation at the surfacefully confirms this picture, as it identifies two distinct watermasses corresponding respectively to surfaced Tyrrhenian IntermediateWater and to Coastal Surface Water. The structural analysisof phytoplankton reveals three assemblages of species characterizingdifferent water types: 1 - the Ischia and Procida channels affectedby the advection of Volturno river and Cuma outfall plumes;2 - the coastal area of the Gulf proper, namely the bays ofPozzuoli, Naples and Castellammare; 3 - the open waterhemislocated beyond the 100 m isobath. The channel area assemblage is dominated by diatoms, particularlyby fast growing species, such as Asterionella japonica, severalspecies of Chaetoceros and Rhizosolenia hebetata f. semispina.The coastal assemblage is identified, among others, by the diatomsCerataulina bergonii, Hemiaulus sinensis; the dinoflagellatesGlenodinium lenticula, Exuviaella compressa and Porella perforata.The open water assemblage is characterized by the diatoms Coscinodiscuscurvatulus and Hemidiscus cuneiformis, the dinoflagellate Amphidiniumacutissimum and the coccolithophore Coccolithus haeckelii.  相似文献

In the tidally mixed coastal waters of the eastern English Channel,the vertical properties of temperature, salinity, in vivo fluorescence,turbidity and light were investigated along an inshore-offshoretransect, sampled in different tidal conditions. The verticaldistribution of these parameters was then characterized in termsof mean value, variability (i.e. standard deviation) and heterogeneity(i.e. fractal dimension), regarded as a quantitative characterizationof the structure of the vertical variability of both physicaland biological parameters. These different estimates were thensubjected to multivariate spatio-temporal analysis and showeda very specific spatio-temporal structure suggesting a differentialcontrol of the vertical properties of water masses associatedwith both inshore-offshore gradient and tidal advection. Inparticular, the fractal dimension (i.e. heterogeneity) of invivo fluorescence is higher during ebb for offshore waters,suggesting a density dependence of the phytoplankton biomassstructure. In contrast, the vertical variability of fluorescenceis higher during flood for inshore waters, leading to an inverserelationship between variability and heterogeneity of the verticaldistribution of phytoplankton biomass.  相似文献

Temporal dynamics of zooplankton communities and assemblages,as well as the influence of environmental factors on them, werestudied in Saronikos Gulf (Aegean Sea, Greece). Different multivariatetechniques (hierarchical clustering, multidimensional scalingand correspondence analysis) were applied on a 2 year data setof zooplankton species composition, based on samples collectedat five stations of the study area. A clear discrimination oftwo communities was revealed, the first one in the semi-enclosedpolluted northern part (Elefsis Bay) andthe second in SaronikosGulf proper. Within the latter community, five assemblages weredistinguished: (i) the coastal winter assemblage characterizedby Ctenocalanus vanus, Oithona similis, Clausocalanus pergensand Fritillaria pellucida; (ii) the psychrophilic assemblageinfluenced by the open sea and characterized by Oithona plumiferaand Clausocalanus jobei; (iii) the spring assemblage characterizedby Evadne nordmanni and Centropages typicus; (iv) the coastalthermophilic assemblage characterized by Penilia avirostis,Evadne ergesrina and Temora stylifera; (v) the thermophilicassemblage influenced by the open sea and characterized by Clausocalanusfurcatus. Both zooplankton and environmental data were treatedby multiple correspondence analysis which revealed the importanceof some environmental factors on zooplankton community composition(eutrophication-pollution, temperature, water mass circulation,hydrology and topography).  相似文献

海平面上升导致了海岸线后退、沿海侵蚀、风暴潮加强、生物栖息地改变、湿地变迁等,引起了近海域生态系统服务价值的变化。以美国Hillsborough County为研究区域,应用SLAMM模型,模拟了海平面从2010年—2100年上升1m的情景下各类用地面积的变化,利用效益转移法评价了生态系统服务价值的变化。结果表明:1旱地面积减少3037 hm~2,湿地面积增加3037hm~2,其中河口水域、滩涂、盐沼、定期洪水沼泽面积大幅度增加;季节性洪水沼泽、潮汐淡水沼泽、河流潮汐、沙滩面积大幅度减少,其它类型湿地受影响较小。2湿地总面积的增加反而导致了生态系统服务价值总量的降低,从2010年的61672万美元降低到2100年的61548万美元,这是由于净水湿地和沙滩大面积损失引起的;其中艺术娱乐、水调节、气候调节、文化精神价值将下降,水供应、栖息地保护、干扰调节和废物处理价值将上升。3防护、适应、后退3种措施分别降低、不影响、提升了生态系统服务价值,应根据其适用范围综合应用以制定应对海平面上升的适应性措施。  相似文献

An analysis of the role of scyphomedusae in a planktonic ecosystemrequires that biomass or numerical abundance estimates be convertibleinto standard units for comparison with other components ofthe planktonic community. One species under investigation isthe brown sea nettle, Chrysaora fuscescens, which is very abundantin coastal waters of the west coast of North America (Shenker,1984). For this species, the carbon content of whole immatureanimals and the body components of sexually mature medusae weredetermined. Immature medusae contained a mean carbon content0.202% of the wet weight. The bell, oral arms and gonadal tissueof mature medusae had mean carbon levels 0.156, 0.554 and 0.576%of the wet weight, respectively. When the relative proportionsof these body tissues were calculated, the mean carbon contentof whole mature medusae was determined to be 0.280% of the wetweight.  相似文献

Relatively warm (12.50–12.75°C) and high-salinity[<35.640 practical salinity units (PSU)] water flowing eastwardwas detected at the shelf-break during a cruise carried Outin the southern Bay of Biscay in Spring 1987. The slope currentinduced the formation of a convergent front separating well-mixedoceanic waters from haline-stratified coastal waters. Very highconcentrations of dissolved oxygen (295 µmol kg–1)and chlorophyll a(>4.5 mg m–3) were found at the outeredge of the frontal boundary. Small autotrophic flagellatesdominated the phytoplankton community. Primary production peakedat the boundary region. Estimated phytoplankton growth ratesindicated that active growth was taking place, with lower turnovertimes integrated over the water column at the frontal station(2.5–5 days) than at coastal (1.5–2.8 days) or oceanic(1.5–3.5 days) stations. The lowest doubling times (1–2days) were calculated for surface frontal populations. Accumulationof zooplankton was also observed associated with the convergentphysical structure, although this relationship was less markedthan for phytoplankton. Copepods, mainly Paracalanus parvus,Acartia clausi and Oithona helgolandica, formed the bulk ofthe mesozooplankton biomass. Compatibility between the sizeof phytoplankton cells and copepod size spectra indicate highfood availability for these animals, particularly in the vicinityof the front. The distribution of fish eggs and fish larvaewas also coupled with the slope current-induced front. Sardinelarvae were more abundant at the coastal side of the front,whereas larval stages of blue whiting reached the highest densitiesat off-shelf stations. Larvae of lamellibranch molluscs andbryozoa were restricted to nearshore waters, as the frontalboundary prevented larval dispersion to the open ocean. Theresults presented in this paper suggest that the Iberian slopecurrent and its associated shelf-break frontal structure werecrucial in controlling phytoplankton primary production, activityof grazers, distribution of larvae of fishes and benthic invertebrates,and ultimately in determining the structure of the pelagic foodweb in the southern Bay of Biscay during the seasonal periodof vertical mixing.  相似文献

Coastal upwelling regions, which are affected by equatorward‐wind variability, are among the most productive areas of the oceans. It has been suggested that global warming will lead to a general strengthening of coastal upwelling, with important ecological implications and an impact on fisheries. However, in the case of the Iberian upwelling, the long‐term analysis of climatological variables described here reveals a weakening in coastal upwelling. This is linked to a decrease of zonal sea level pressure gradient, and correlated with an observed increase of sea surface temperature and North Atlantic Oscillation. Weakening of coastal upwelling has led to quantifiable modifications of the ecosystem. In outer shelf waters a drop in new production over the last 40 years is likely related to the reduction of sardine landings at local harbors. On the other hand, in inner shelf and Ria waters, the observed weakening of upwelling has slowed down the residual circulation that introduces nutrients to the euphotic layer, and has increased the stability of the water column. The drop in nutrient levels has been compensated by an increase of organic matter remineralization. The phytoplankton community has responded to those environmental trends with an increase in the percentage of dinoflagellates and Pseudonitzschia spp. and a reduction in total diatoms. The former favors the proliferation of harmful algal blooms and reduces the permitted harvesting period for the mussel aquaculture industry. The demise of the sardine fishery and the potential threat to the mussel culture could have serious socio‐economic consequences for the region.  相似文献

The occurrence of the calanoid copepod, Acartia omorii, is reportedfor the first time in the coastal waters of the Southern bightof the North Sea, off Calais harbour. Acartia omorii males andfemales were consistently found in four plankton samples. Thecollected specimens were compared with A. omorii individualscollected from the type locality (Tokyo Bay, Japan). The captureof A. omorii, a species native to Japanese coastal waters, isin agreement with the recent observation of the Japanese macroalgaeUndaria pinnatifida within Calais harbor and the hypothesisof passive transport in ship’s ballast water.  相似文献

Nematodes have been identified as a potentially hyperdiverse group and the deep sea as a potentially hyperdiverse environment (i.e. > 1 million species). A large-scale data set from the equatorial central Pacific is used to estimate regional diversity with results that challenge this view; regional diversity is higher in some coastal waters despite lower sample diversity in coastal waters than in the deep sea. The data suggests a paradigm where the deep sea has modest regional diversity, despite high local diversity through patch dynamics, because similar patches in a similar habitat are repeated for considerable distances. Disturbance in shallow water dominates over patch-dynamic mechanisms reducing local diversity but regional diversity is high because of the close packing of multiple habitats within a single region.
  The Pacific data are also used to demonstrate the pitfalls of extrapolating from local to global diversity. There is no reason to conclude that nematodes are less diverse than other benthic groups, indeed where direct comparison is possible the Nematoda appear to be as diverse as the Polychaeta, the most diverse macrofaunal taxon. This analysis is not consistent with the hypothesis that either marine nematodes or the deep-sea benthos are hyperdiverse raising the question whether any environment or metazoan taxon has more than a million species.  相似文献

Physical, chemical, and phytoplankton distributions observed in Liverpool Bay during early and terminal stages in development of the spring bloom in May, 1977, are described. Qualitative and quantitative changes in phytoplankton distributions are interpreted with respect to the contemporaneous chemical and physical hydrography and quantified changes in the hydrography between the periods of observation. In early May, a physical discontinuity demarcated the biological, physical, and most of the chemical characteristics of the offshore and coastal waters. Phytoplankton numbers were greatest in the inshore waters and decreased seaward. The diatom bloom was concentrated in coastal areas where the nutrient status of the waters was least favourable to sustain it. The waters bounded by the front and the coast were composed of a number of physically and chemically distinct water types and each had associated with it a qualitatively distinct phytoplankton population. During the early stage of the spring bloom no abnormal concentrations or accumulations of phytoplankton were associated with the front. By late May areas of diverse phytoplankton density had developed in the inshore waters, major differences in qualitative composition were associated with various density fields and the physical discontinuity, separating offshore and coastal waters, had developed into the site of greatest phytoplankton density. The spatial and temporal changes in the phytoplankton populations are shown to be related to the nutrient status of the waters both within and at the boundaries of the various density fields.  相似文献

The use of satellite hyperspectral images has improved the extraction of information compared to multispectral images. Although designed as a technical demonstration for land applications, Hyperion satellite hyperspectral images are used to estimate sea water parameters in the coastal area. A combination of turbid river inputs, as well as the open sea flushing, determines the quality of the sea water in the coastal area and the status of its environment. In addition, the existence of different source of pollution adds to the complexity of the coastal sea water analysis. The field campaigns to retrieve sea water parameters provided by the past completed projects were coincident with acquisition of the Hyperion image covering the pilot area. A robust method based on a supervised Feed-Forward Back-Propagation Artificial Neural Network (ANN-BP) algorithm is applied to retrieve the concentration of chlorophyll-a from hyperspectral image. In addition, Hyperion images are used to show the variation of chlorophyll-a during two different periods of time. The variation is due to many manmade environmental disasters such as oil spill and continuous discharge of chemical and solid wastes. The research proves that the new method based on ANN has improved the mathematical regression methods to a coefficient of determination almost equal 1 compared to about 0.4 for the methods not based on ANN-BP.  相似文献

The seasonal variability of phytoplankton assemblages in themiddle Adriatic sub-basin is described. The investigated areacrossed the middle Adriatic from the Italian to the Croatiancoasts. Hydrographic data, chlorophyll (Chl) a and phytoplanktonwere collected on a seasonal basis from May 1995 to February1996. Highest phytoplankton densities (up to 6 x 106 cells dm–3)were observed in spring and autumn in the western side, withinthe diluted waters. The vertical distribution of Chl a exhibiteda pronounced subsurface maximum associated, in coastal waters,with micro-planktonic diatoms. Phytoplankton assemblages weredominated by phytoflagellates in all the periods investigated.Diatom maxima were observed in spring and autumn: their verticaldistribution generally reflected the Chl a pattern and in thewestern coastal area peaks are due to large diatom species (Pseudo-nitzschiaspp.). In offshore waters, dinoflagellates strongly prevailover diatoms and provide a relevant contribution to the totalbiomass, especially in highly stratified conditions. Coccolithophoridswere mostly encountered in surface layers and their highestcontribution to the total biomass was observed in the LevantineIntermediate Water.  相似文献

The population abundances and rates of biomass production ofheterotrophic nanoplankton (HNAN) in Georgia coastal waterswere evaluated by epifluorescence microscopy. HNAN populations(mostly non-pigmented microflagellates <10 µm in diameter)ranged from 0.3 x 103 cells ml–1 in shelf waters 15 kmoffshore to 6.3 x 103 cells ml–1 in waters 0.25 km fromthe coast. There was a strong correlation (r = 0.83) betweenHNAN and free bacterioplankton population abundances, but noapparent relation (r = 0.38) between HNAN and phototrophic nanopLankton(PNAN) abundances. HNAN biomass production in estuarine andnearshore shelf waters, as estimated from increases in HNANpopulations during laboratory incubations of natural water samples,ranged from 0.10 to 0.79 mg C m–3 h–3, with populationgeneration times of 9.7 to 26.5 h. There was a significant linearrelation (r = 0.95) between HNAN biomass and HNAN productivity.We calculated that HNAN may graze at least 30% to 50% of dailybacterioplankton production in Georgia coastal waters.  相似文献
