A neotype based on aWesmael specimen is designated forMicroctonus aethiops (Nees).M. aethiops of authors is described asaethiopoides, new species. Lectotypes are designated forM. secalis (Haliday) andcerealium (Haliday). The namecerealium is suppressed as a synonym of the namesecalis and the types ofsecalis andbrevicollis (Haliday) are redescribed.

The author discusses the nomenclature of the speciesGeastrum fimbriatum Fr.; shows why it is not possible to apply the nameGeastrum rufescens Pers. exPers. to this species and maintains the use of the nameGeastrum sessile (Sow.)Pouz., which is here proposed as a new combination.

The nameDryopteris borreri Newman 1854 was not validly published in the specific rank. A new nameDryopteris pseudo-mas (Wollaston) Holub etPouzar 1967 is proposed as the correct name for this European species.

Fallopia Adans. 1763 instead ofBilderdykia Dum. 1827

The generic nameFallopia Adans. 1763 is analysed from the point of view of its taxonomic identily and typified byPolygonum scandens L. 1753. By this typification it is taxonomically identical withBilderdykia Dum. 1827 and must replace that name. The genusFallopia Adans. is defined by comparison with related genera; it includes 9 species in two sections, and 1 hybrid; new nomenclatural combinations are proposed for these taxa.     

The taxonomy and nomenclature of Crotalaria foliosa (Leguminosae) and related species

Crotalaria foliosa Benth. is found to be a later homonym and the new nameCrotalaria mohlenbrockii is proposed to replace it. A new speciesCrotalaria paraguayensis is described andC. martiana Benth. is redefined.     

The typification and identity of Salix eriocephala Michx. (Salicaceae)

The lectotype ofS. eriocephala was selected from the vegetative specimens collected by Michaux in the Mississippi River valley in the fall of 1795. Its identity is the same as that which recently has been known asS. missouriensis orS. rigida var.vestita. Since these taxa are not specifically distinct fromS. rigida the nameS. eriocephala takes priority as the correct name for this wide-ranging North American species.     

Potamogeton×haynesii (Potamogetonaceae), a new species from northeastern North America

Potamogeton×haynesii is described as a new species from northeastern North America. The nameP. longiligulatus has been misapplied to this plant. Following the study of type material,P. longiligulatus is placed in synonymy underP. strictifolius.     

Encyclia altissima Schlechter (Orchidaceae), a resurrected name for the Bahama Flora

The nameEncyclia hodgeana (A. D. Hawkes) Beckner has been incorrectly applied toE. altissima Schlechter in the Bahamas.     

The nomenclatural type ofMalcolmia pyramidum C. Presl

The lectotype of the nameMalcolmia pyramidum C. Presl in Abh. Böhm. Ges. Wiss. ser. 5 (3) 439 (1845) was established in material deposited in the herbarium of the Botanical Institute of the Charles University Praha, (PRC).     

The identity and taxonomic affinity of Calathea rotundifolia and C. fasciata (Marantaceae)

The nameCalathea rotundifolia Koern. is a later homonym ofC. rotundifolia Poeppig & Endl. and is replaced by the new combinationC. orbifolia (Linden) Kennedy.Calathea fasciata is recognized as a distinct species. Both species are closely related toC. vaginata and clearly belong inCalathea seriesRhizanthae rather than seriesNudiscapae where placed by Schumann.     

Polystichum lilianae sp. nov. (Dryopteridaceae) and its relationships to P. fournieri and P. turrialbae

Morphological, isozyme, and cytological analyses of the small, pale-scaled polystichums from oakdominated montane rain forests in Costa Rica and Mexico reveal the presence of a separable undescribed species endemic to the Cordillera de Talamanca of Costa Rica. The new taxon,Polystichum lilianae, is an allotetraploid hypothesized to have the sympatricP. turrialbae as one diploid progenitor based on isozyme characters. The isozyme and morphometric data also support the inclusion ofP. smithii, described from southern Mexico, inP. turrialbae, described from Costa Rica. The namePolystichum fournieri, formerly used for all of these plants, applies to species endemic to Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico. It is not a progenitor ofP. lilianae.     

Saccharomyces smittii nov. spec. A new yeast isolated from Dutch,Italian and Swedish soils

Summary A new species ofSaccharomyces is described, which was isolated from soils. The nameSaccharomyces smittii is proposed in memory of the late Prof.Jan Smit (Director of the Laboratory for Microbiology, Wageningen, Holland).     

Cercocaprus ledifolius var. intermontanus (Rosaceae), a new varietal name for the Intermountain curl-leaf mountain-mahogany

The curl-leaf mountain-mahogany of the Intermountain Region is given a varietal name for the first time,Cercocarpus ledifolius var.intermontanus. It is distinguished from var.ledifolius by its broader, less pubescent leaves, its often longer petioles, and its often longer hypanthium tube. The nameC. ledifolius var.intercedens C. Schneider is based on a likely hybrid betweenC. ledifolius var.intermontanus andC. intricatus. The namesC. hypoleucus andC. ledifolius var.intercedens f.hirsutus fall into synonymy underC. ledifolius var.ledifolius. A lectotype is selected for the quadrinomialC. ledifolius var.intercedens f.hirsutus.     

Balboa (Fabaceae: Millettieae) reduced to Cracca (Robinieae)

Balboa diversifolia Liebm., known only from the type collection and hitherto of controversial affinity, is here referred to the genusCracca Benth. As the epithetdiversifolia is preoccupied inCracca, the new nameCracca pacifica is proposed. This species is morphologically most similar to the widespreadCracca caribaea.     

A revision of the West Indian species of Lepanthes (Orchidaceae). III. Cuba

A study of herbarium material ofLepanthes indicates that there are at least 18 species on Cuba. The history of the collections and publications on the genus from the island is summarized, and a detailed key to the species is given. One new combination is proposed (L. blepharophylla) and the following species are described as new:L. acunae,L. dressleri,L. cubensis,L. grisebachiana,L. obliquiloba, andL. occidentalis, of which three are from western provinces and two have been associated with inappropriate names.L. mandibularis Reichb. f. is tentatively considered a synonym ofL. chrysostigma Lindl. although the type ofL. mandibularis could not be found. The range of variation included under the nameL. fulva Lindl. suggests that more than one species is involved.     

Myosotis michaelae — A new species ofMyosotis ser.Palustres (Boraginaceae)

A new species ofMyosotis ser.Palustres Popov,Myosotis michaelae, related to theM. nemorosa group, is described from France. Further localities from Switzerland, Romania and Bulgaria are listed. Diploid chromosome number (2n=22) is given for the new species, and notes on its distribution, ecology and taxonomic relationships are presented. The lectotype is chosen and designated for the nameMyosotis palustris L. var.scabra Simonk.
