New species of Solanum section Geminata (Solanaceae) from South America

Fourteen new species ofSolanum sectionGeminata are described and illustrated. Eight of these,S. erosomarginatum, S. foetens, S. lasiocladum, S. lucens, S. ombrophilum, S. tanysepalum, S. tenuiflagellatum, andS. turgidum are from Venezuela.Solanum cucullatum andS. bellum are from Ecuador,S. abitaguense from Ecuador and northeastern Peru,S. amnicola andS. yanamonense from eastern Peru, andS. mapiricum from eastern Bolivia. Relationships of each of the species to others in its geographical area are discussed. Chromosome numbers are reported for ten of these new species.     

New species of Cuphea section Melvilla (Lythraceae) and an annotated key to the section

Three novelties inCuphea sectionMelvilla subsect.Pachycalyx are described from Brazil;C. andersonii andC. cylindracea from Pará, andC. sabulosa from Amazonas. An annotated key to the 47 species ofCuphea sectionMelvilla is provided, the first since the 1903 monograph of the family, which then included 27 species in the section. The key identifies those species ofCuphea with thick, dorsally convex, red- or yellow-tubed flowers distributed from Mexico to Argentina.

Begonia breedlovei, B. chiapensis, andB. jaliscana, new species in sectionGireoudia from Mexico, are described, illustrated, and discussed.     

Two new species of Senecio section Palmatinervii (Asteraceae) from northeastern Mexico

Two new species ofSenecio,S. sundbergii andS. neogibsonii, belonging to the sectionPalmatinervii are described, illustrated, and compared to their nearest relatives,S. aschenbornianus andS. lanicaulis.     

Nomenclatural changes in Polygonum section Echinocaulon (Polygonaceae)

As a result of comprehensive systematic study onPolygonum sectionEchinocaulon, three new nomenclatural changes are made:P. clarkei stat. et nom. nov.,P. subsagittatum stat. nov., andP. senticosum var.sagittifolium stat. nov.     

Three new species of Dalechampia (Euphorbiaceae) from Brazil

Dalechampia fernandesii, from Ceará, belongs to sectionTiliifoliae and is related toD. affinis andD. tiliifolia.Dalechampia armbrusteri, of subsectionDalechampia, from Bahia, is close toD. brownsbergensis of Suriname but has well developed resiniferous bractlets.Dalechampia viridissima, from Bahia and Espírito Santo, is an isolated species with the 3-lobed leaves of species in sectionDalechampia subsectionDalechampia but the reduced indumentum and greenish bracts of species in sectionTriphyllae.     

Sphagna of the 1979 Projeto Flora Amazônica expedition

Within the great expanse of the Brazilian Amazon Basin,Sphagnum has been greatly overlooked, in part because of its scarcity and in part because of the paucity of trained bryological collectors in the area. During a Projeto Flora Amazônica expedition in 1979, seven specimens ofSphagnum were collected, representing six species, five of which are newly described:S. amazonicum, S. dimorphophyllum, andS. subsecundoides in sectionSphagnum;S. curicuriariense andS. ripense in sect.Subsecunda. Also discussed areS. negrense Mitt. andS. sanguinale Warnst.     

A new name and new combinations in Campomanesia and Pimenta (Myrtaceae)

One new name is proposed and eleven new combinations are made inCampomanesia andPimenta. Lectotypes are selected forC. eugenioides var.desertorum, C. phaea, andP. racemosa var.hispaniolensis, var.ouza, and var.terebinthina.     

A new subspecies and new combinations in Comarostaphylis (Ericaceae)

Comarostaphylis spinulosa subsp.glandulifera is described from the mountains of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. Four new combinations inComarostaphylis are also made:C. arbutoides subsp.costaricensis, C. discolor subsp.rupestris, C. polifolia subsp.minor, andC. spinulosa.Arctostaphylos glabrata, A. rupestris, andA. spinulosa are lectotypified and the status ofC. polifolia is discussed.     

Studies in the Cyperaceae of Thailand I. New and otherwise noteworthy species of Fimbristylis

Six Thai species ofFimbristylis, including two new ones, are taxonomically discussed, and some range extensions into Burma are reported. Described as new areFimbristylis kernii from the neighborhood ofF. hookeriana, andF. smitinandii, a clearcut species of the sectionAbildgaardia.     

Three new species of Elleanthus (Orchidaceae) from Central America

Elleanthus stolonifer andE. tillandsioides are new species in theE. poiformis complex of sectionChloidelyna.Elleanthus lentii is a new species in sectionStachydelyna. Elleanthus stolonifer is widespread in the mountains of Costa Rica and Panama;E. tillandsioides is found only in the lowland forests of southeastern Costa Rica;E. lentii is limited to the Cordillera de Guanacaste of Costa Rica.     

Three new species of Dalechampia (Euphorbiaceae) from Venezuelan Guayana

Three new species ofDalechampia are described from the Guayanan region of Venezuela.Dalechampia attenuistylus belongs to sectionRhopalostylis and may be most closely related toD. parvibracteata Lanj.Dalechampia megacarpa belongs to sectionDioscoreifoliae, although it is not especially close to any species in the section.Dalechampia papillistigma is also an isolated member of sectionDioscoreifolieae.

Two new species are described inBegonia sectionGireoudia:B. rafael-torresii andB. mariti.Begonia karwinskyana, known previously only from its type, is described more amply and discussed.     

New genera and species of ericaceae (Vaccinieae) from Costa Rica and Panama

Two new monotypic genera,Didonica andUtleya, are described, withD. pendula from Panama andU. costaricensis from Costa Rica.Disterigma trimera (Panama),D. utleyorum (Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador),Lateropora santafeensis (Panama),Lysiclesia panamensis (Panama),Macleania talamancensis (Costa Rica),Themistoclesia costaricensis (Costa Rica) andT. horquetensis (Panama),Vaccinium costaricense andV. orosiense (both from Costa Rica) and V.jefense (Panama) are all described as new. New combinations are provided for the PanamanianVaccinium floccosum (=Symphysia floccosa) and the West IndianVaccinium racemosum (=Symphysia racemosa). Keys are provided for the Central American species ofDisterigma andThemistoclesia, the species ofLateropora andLysiclesia, and the Costa Rican and Panamanian species ofVaccinium. Six new species are illustrated.     

The proliferous species of Elaphoglossum (Elaphoglossaceae) and their relatives

Thirteen taxa of the fern genusElaphoglossum reproduce vegetatively by a bud borne at the retuse apex of the sterile frond. These and six of their nonproliferous close relatives, all of tropical America, are discussed and described. All but one belong to various species groups in the closely allied sectionsSetosa andUndulata, the remaining one belonging to sectionLepidoglossa. Fourteen of the taxa are new:E. boryanum var.eutecnum, E. cardioglossum, E. entecnum, E. exsertipes, E. herpestes, E. inciens, E. nanoglossum, E. omissum, E. phoras, E. phyllitidis, E. plumosum f. maternum, E. pseudoboryanum, E. rufum, andE. wardiae.     

Two new species of Verbesina section Ochractinia (Asteraceae) from South America

Two new species ofVerbesina sectionOchractinia are described:V. quetamensis from Colombia, a member of theV. synethes species group andV. carangolensis from Brazil, most closely allied withV. acuminata.     

Chrysothamnus eremobius (Asteraceae): A new species from Nevada

Chrysothamnus eremobius, endemic to mountains of southern Nevada, is formally described and illustrated. Morphological and anatomical comparisons are made to related taxa. The new species has many features likePetradoria discoidea (=C. gramineus). Although it bears some similarity toC. depressus andC. vaseyi of sectionPulchelli, C. eremobius is better placed in sectionChrysothamnus nearC. viscidiflorus.     

New combinations in Hawaiian Chamaesyce (Euphorbiaceae)

Chamaesyce is accepted at the genus level for the Hawaiian taxa. The following new combinations are made:C. celastroides var.laehiensis, C. celastroides var.tomentella, C. rockii var.grandifolia, C. skottsbergii var.vaccinioides, andC. sparsiflora.     

Five new species of Heteropterys (Malpighiaceae) from Central and South America

Five-new taxa ofHeteropterys H. B. K. subsect.Aptychia Nied. are described, illustrated, and mapped:H. andina from Peru;H. minutiflora from Costa Rica; andH. bullata, H. capixaba, andH. oberdanii, from the Atlantic coastal forest of Brazil. The affinities and diagnostic characters of each species are discussed.
