Plants of the apple rootstock M.VII were grown for a singleseason by spraying their roots continuously with nutrient solutions:(a) complete, (b) low iron, (c) low magnesium, and (d) low ironand low magnesium. Detailed records were taken throughout theseason of fresh weight, shoot length, diameter, and leaf area, while the fresh and dry weights of component parts were determinedon harvested samples. The leaves of the iron-deficient plants were chlorotic and hada lower dry weight and higher water content per unit area thanthose of the control plants. Growth and net assimilation ratewere both reduced but the distribution of assimilates was similarto that in the controls. Total growth was also markedly reduced by the low-magnesiumtreatment, but the leaf symptoms were different and the plantswere morphologically distinct from the control plants. Verylittle chlorosis occurred, but necrosis and severe defoliation, progressing up the shoot, reduced the leaf area ratio and probablylargely accounted for the low net assimilation rate and relativegrowth rate. The diameter of the shoot was affected much morethan its length and the shoot/root ratio was greatly increased. Plants deficient in both iron and magnesium showed less defoliationthan when magnesium alone was low. More dry matter accumulatedin the old stem and less in the new shoot than would have occurredwith a simple combination of the single deficiencies.  相似文献

Growth performances of Crotalaria juncea L. and C. sericea Retz.have been compared at two controlled temperatures, 16–20°C, and 28–32 °C, with respect to increase ind. wt and leaf area, relative growth rate, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, leaf weight ratio, net assimilation rate, the ratio of mean relative growth rate to mean relative rateof leaf area increase () and shoot/root ratios. Both the speciesgrew better at the higher temperature; however the relativegrowth rate was more affected by temperature in C. sericea thanin C. juncea. Further, it was observed to be more dependenton net assimilation rate than on the leaf area ratio. Growth of oil palm seedlings over the period 2–31 weeksafter planting in the nursery was studied using growth-analysistechniques. Curves of the Gompertz type were fitted to the basicdata of plant dry weight and leaf area, and from the equationsof the fitted curves, net assimilation rate (EA), relative growth-rate(Rw), and relative leaf growth-rate (RA) were calculated. The low values of EA (0.16-0–31 g/dm2/week) and Rw (1.4–2.2per cent./per day) confirm earlier work on oil palm seedlings. The time trend of increasing EA and RW over the period studiedis associated with steadily increasing solar radiation overthe second half of the period. Leaf-area ratio is markedly affected by transplanting, and asthis unbalance of leaf area/total dry weight has been shownto be associated with low rates of EA in seedlings, it is suggestedthat the low values of EA and RW in the first half of the experimentalperiod are due to the effect of transplanting. These findings are discussed in relation to current nurserypractice.  相似文献

Selections for slow and for fast rate of dark respiration ofmature leaves were made from within Lolium perenne cv. S23.Selected parents were pair-crossed to provide 15 F1 familieswith slow respiration and 15 with fast. Dark respiration was inherited and families with contrastingrates were subjected to sequentially harvested growth analysesfrom the third leaf stage to that of 95 per cent light interceptionin a growth room. Seven periods of regrowth of simulated swardsof the families were then recorded. During development of theprimary canopy, growth of the selections did not differ untilthe final harvest interval. At this stage slow respiration familieshad faster (P < 0.05) net assimilation rate and greater plantdry weight (P < 0.05) and leaf area index (P < 0.05) thanthe fast respiration group. Relative growth rate followed thesame trend. In the swards after each regrowth dry matter yieldof the slow respiration group was greater than that of the fast. In another experiment, simulated swards of six slow respirationfamilies yielded more than swards of six fast respiration familiesover sequential regrowth periods in a glasshouse from May toNovember: S23 was intermediate. Differences were most duringAugust and September. Crop growth rate at each harvest correlated(P < 0.05 or P < 0.01) with previously determined leafrespiration at 25 °C. Leaf protein levels in August weaklycorrelated (r = +0.57, P < 0.05) with respiration rate perunit dry weight but there was a significant residual negativecorrelation (r = –0.67, P < 0.05) between the rateper unit protein and growth at that time. Results are discussedin relation to the concept of ‘maintenance-relàted’respiration. Low temperature (6 C) growth was examined in two cultivarsof Vicia faba L. supplied with 4 and 20 mol m–3 N as nitrateor urea. Both cultivars showed similar growth responses to increasedapplied-N concentration regardless of N-form. Total leaf areaincreased, as did root, stem and leaf dry weight, total carboncontent and total nitrogen content. In contrast to findingsat higher growth temperatures, 20 mol m–3 urea-N gavesubstantially greater growth (all parameters measured) than20 mol m–3 nitrate-N. The increased carbon content per plant associated with increasedapplied nitrate or urea concentration, or with urea in comparisonto nitrate, was due to a greater leaf area per plant for CO2uptake and not an increased CO2, uptake per unit area, carbon, chlorophyll or dry weight, all of which either remained constantor decreased. Nitrate reductase activity was substantial inplants given nitrate but negligible in plants given urea. Neitherfree nitrate nor free urea contributed greatly to nitrogen levelsin plant tissues. It is concluded that there is no evidence for a restrictionin nitrate reduction at 6 C, and it is likely that urea givesgreater growth than nitrate because of greater rates of uptake. The parts played by constant amounts of visible radiation perday and its two components—daylength and intensity—ininfluencing the growth of Cucumis sativus have been investigated. The amount of radiation per day had a far greater influencethan either of its components per se. Nevertheless, small significanteffects of photoperiod were found, leaf expansion and dry weightincrease being greatest at daylengths between 10 and 15 hr.rather than with longer days which, with similar daily totals, would be expected to give the greatest amounts of assimilation. Rates of leaf production and appearance were greatest with thehighest amounts of radiation, but the rates of expansion ofindividual leaves and their maximum areas were greatest withintermediate amounts of radiation. This response resulted inan optimum curve relating the leaf surface and the dry weightattained after a given period to radiation. The amount of radiationgiving the maximum leaf surface and dry weight decreased withage and with external nutrient supply, but at any one age washigher for increase in dry weight than for increase in leafsurface; stem and root tissues responded more to high radiationthan did the leaf surface. The net assimilation rate was a linearfunction of visible radiation over the range of 15–120cal. cm.-2 day-1 explored, the highest value of radiation usedrepresenting the intensity at which photosynthesis would beexpected to be maximal over a 12–15 hr. day. The inhibitory effect of high radiation on leaf expansion andthe resultant influence on the growth of the plant are explainedin terms of the number and intensity of ‘sinks’for carbohydrate and mineral nutrients within the plant.  相似文献

The Production and Distribution of Dry Matter in Maize after Flowering   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
An experiment in which different groups of leaf laminae wereremoved, or ears shaded, shortly after silking showed that mostof the dry-matter increase after flowering was produced by upperleaves. The top five, the middle four, and the bottom six laminaeaccounted, respectively, for 26 per cent, 42 per cent, and 32per cent of the leaf area duration (D) of the laminae afterflowering; the estimated contributions of the three groups todry-matter production by the laminae after flowering were about40 per cent, 35–50 per cent, and 5–25 per cent, respectively. The sheaths provided about one-fifth of the totalleaf area and probably contributed about one-fifth, and laminaefour-fifths, of the total dry matter produced after flowering. The contribution from photosynthesis by the ear was negligible, presumably because its surface area was only 2 per cent of thatof the leaves. Leaf efficiency (dry matter produced per unitarea) decreased greatly from the top to the base of the shoot. When laminae were removed, the grain received a larger fractionof the dry matter accumulated after flowering, less dry matterremained in the stem, and the photosynthetic efficiency of theremaining leaves was apparently increased. When alternate laminae were removed at the time of silking (half-defoliation)D was decreased by 40 per cent, and the subsequent productionof dry matter decreased nearly proportionately, so that netassimilation rate (E) was not affected but grain dry weightwas decreased by only 32 per cent. At the final harvest, thegrain of half-defoliated plants constituted 80 per cent of thedry matter accumulated after flowering, compared with 65 percent for intact plants. Stem weight decreased from two weeksafter flowering in half-defoliated plants, but remained nearlyconstant in intact plants. When pollination was prevented andno grains formed, E during the first month after flowering wasunaffected; the dry matter that would have passed into the grainaccumulated in the stem and husks, not in the leaves. The decrease in stem weight caused by defoliation suggests thatpreviously stored dry matter was moved to the grain. That suchmovement is possible was shown by keeping prematurely harvestedshoots in the dark for two weeks with their cut ends in water;the dry weight of the grain increased and that of the stem, laminae, husks, and core decreased. Nevertheless, dry-matterproduction after flowering was more than sufficient for graingrowth, and previous photosynthesis probably contributed littleto the grain.  相似文献

The specific respiration rates of nodulated root systems, ofnodules and of roots were determined during active nitrogenfixation in soya bean, navy bean, pea, lucerne, red clover andwhite clover, by measurements on whole plants before and afterthe removal of nodule populations. Similar measurements weremade on comparable populations of the six legumes, lacking nodulesbut receiving abundant nitrate-nitrogen, to determine the specificrespiration of their roots. All plants were grown in a controlled-environmentclimate which fostered rapid growth. The specific respiration rates of nodulated root systems ofthe three grain and three forage legumes during a 7–14-dayperiod of vegetative growth varied between 10 and 17 mg CO2g–1 (dry weight) h–1. This mean value consistedof two components: a specific root respiration rate of 6–9mg CO2 g–1 h–1 and a specific nodule respirationrate of 22–46 mg CO2 g–1 h–1. Nodule respirationaccounted for 42–70 per cent of nodulated root respiration;nodule weight accounted for 12–40 per cent of nodulatedroot weight. The specific respiration rates of roots lackingnodules and utilizing nitrate nitrogen were generally 20–30per cent greater than the equivalent rates of roots from nodulatedplants. The measured respiratory effluxes are discussed in thecontext of nitrogen nitrogen fixation, nitrate assimilation. Sugar-beet, potato, and barley plants were grown in a controlledenvironment, for periods of up to 10 weeks from sowing, witha light intensity of 1,8oo f.c. (4·9 cal./cm.2/hr.) anda temperature of 20° C. during the 18-hour photoperiod and15° C. during the dark period, to test whether net assimilationrate varied with age and differed between the three species. Net assimilation rate of all species based on leaf area (EA)fell approximately linearly with time. During 5 weeks EA ofsugar-beet decreased by only about 20 per cent. and EA of potatodecreased by 50 per cent. EA of barley remained approximatelyconstant for 4 weeks after sowing and was halved during thesubsequent 4 weeks. The average value of EA for all times wasgreatest for sugarbeet and least for barley. Net assimilation rates based on leaf weight (EW) and leaf N(EN) decreased at about 15 per cent. of the initial value perweek for all species; this was similar to the mean rate of decreaseof EA of potato and barley, but greater than that of EA of sugar-beet.Mean values of EW or EN for potato and barley were similar andless than for sugar-beet. Relative growth rate (RW), relative leaf growth-rate (RA), andleaf-area ratio (F) fell with time at similar rates for allspecies. Average values of RW decreased and of F increased inthe order sugar-beet, potato, barley. RA was greatest for potatoand least for barley.  相似文献

The energy balance approach was applied to calculate the CO2flux above and within a cassava community, growing during asavanna wet season. Data of the response of CO2 exchange todiurnal changes in the savanna environment were integrated toa growth analysis of the cassava crop. The carbon budget of the entire community was calculated atdifferent development stages. Results indicate that CO2 uptakein cassava appears to follow a linear net radiation responsecurve, dependent on crop age. The maximum net CO2 uptake decreasedfrom 0.195 MJ m–2 day–1 at maximum leaf area development(August) to 0.028 MJ m–1 day-1 2 months later. These ratesrepresent 41 and 19 per cent gross assimilation. Data of energy conversion efficiency show that at a maximumleaf area development, the crop fixed 2.2 and 0.9 per cent Rtas gross (g) and net photosynthesis (n) respectively. As theseason proceeded,n decreased to 0.1, whereas g decreased to0.7, which indicates that dry matter lost by respiration isone of the determining factors in the seasonal trend of efficiencychanges. The comparison of growth characteristics calculated for cv.Cubana, growing during consecutive years in the same experimentalsite, indicate that yearly variability in dry matter accumulationis due to the wide range of environmental conditions presentduring the savanna wet season. Operational factors acting depressivelyon the cassava carbon budget and affecting dry matter productionwere also analysed. A growth analysis was carried out with sweet pepper plants grownin a phytotron. Irradiance conditions were: 0.84 or 3.25 MJm–2 in 8 h, 1.67 MJ m–2 in 16 h and 2.51 MJ m–2in 24 h. Temperatures applied were 25 or 21 °C during thephotoperiod in combination with 25, 21 and 17 or 21, 17 and13 °C respectively during the nyctoperiod. Highest values for leaf area and total dry weight were foundwhen applying 1.67 MJ m–2 in 16 h, followed by 3.25 MJm–2 in 8 h, irrespective of the temperature regime. Continuousirradiance ultimately resulted in leaf drop. A reduction inthe day temperature decreased leaf area and total dry weight. At a day temperature of 25 °C the dry weight increased withdecreasing night temperature when applying 3.25 MJ m–2in 8 h. At a day temperature of 21 °C leaf area and dryweight were reduced when 17 or 13 °C were applied duringa 16 h nyctoperiod. Values for relative growth rate, net assimilation rate, leafarea ratio and leaf weight ratio strongly decreased with advancingplant age. The effects of irradiance treatment on RGR and NARwere analogous to those on total dry weight while the reversepattern was observed for the LAR. A decrease in day temperaturedecreased the RGR. The effects of night temperature exhibitedstrong interactions with day temperature and photoperiod. Theinfluence of temperature on RGR was largely mediated throughchanges in the LAR. The latter parameter was highly correlatedwith the specific leaf weight. Capsicum annuum L., sweet pepper, growth analysis, irradiance, temperature, plant age  相似文献

During the ripening stage of barley and rice, the sink activitywas defined as the dry matter increase per units sink size, leaf area and time, as follows: NAR = A.SinkW+NAR', where NAR is the net assimilation rate (g d.wt dm–2d–1);A is the sink activity [g d.wt g–1d.wt (ear) dm–2d–1]; Sink W is ear wt per plant at heading (g d.wt);and NAR' is net assimilation rate excluding the assimilate ofsink organ (g d.wt dm–2 d–1). Plant material with 16 combinations of mutually different sink(ear) and source (leaf) size were produced at heading for eachcrop: parts of each leaf and ear were removed to produce fourgrades in barley, and also a part of each leaf was removed producingfour grades for four rice varieties showing different ear size.NAR and NAR' were determined during 26 and 21 d in barley andrice after heading, respectively. Sink activity (A), representedas the assimilation rate induced by the sink organ, was estimatedfrom the relationship between SinkW and NAR using the previousequation. The sink activity was significantly higher in ricewith a value of 0–0.028 g d.wt g–1 d.wt (ear) dm–2d–1 vs. 0–0.0017 in barley, suggesting that therelative role of leaves for grain filling is considerably higherin rice than in barley. The sink activity obtained in the studymight be introduced into a model to predict the yields of barleyand rice. Simulated mixed swards of Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) cv. S23 and White clover (Trifolium repens L.) cv. S100were grown from seed under a constant 20 °C day/15 °Cnight temperature regime and their growth and carbon economyexamined. The swards received a nutrient solution daily, whichcontained either High (220 mg l1) or Low (10 mg l–1)nitrate N. Rates of canopy photosynthesis and respiration, and final drymatter yields were similar in the two treatments although theproportions of grass and clover differed greatly. The Low-Nswards were made up largely of clover. The grass plants in theseswards had high root: shoot ratios and low relative photosyntheticrates – both signs of N deficiency – and were clearlyunable to compete with the vigorously growing Low-N clover plants. These had higher relative growth rates and dry matter yieldsthan their High-N counterparts. In the High-N swards clovercontributed around 50 per cent to the sward dry weight throughoutthe measurement period despite having a smaller proportion ofits dry weight in photosynthetic tissue (laminae) than grassover much of it. The latter was compensated for, initially bya higher specific leaf area than grass, and later by a higherphotosynthetic rate per unit leaf weight. The results are discussedin relation to observed declines in the clover content of swardsafter the addition of nitrogen fertilizer in the field. Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and ammonia (NH2) exchangeswere determined in the Trachypogon savannas of the Orinoco Llanosusing the energy balance approach. Total dry mass and separatedry mass values of plant parts were used for a growth analysisof the community and for measurements of nitrogen content. Duringthe growth period, the net assimilation (P40) ranged from 0.102to 0.127 MJ m–2 d–1 (6.6–7.9 g dry mass m–2d–1). These figures were similar to mean crop growth ratemeasured using the mass balance approach (2.8–6.9 g drymass m–2 d–1). Analysis of the daily trend of theCO2 assimilated by the community showed a low total energy conversionof net photosynthesis (x = 0.7) compared with the values reportedfor tropical grasses. During the dry season, the community conserved71% of the maximum N accumulated during the previous wet season.Sixty-eight per cent of the community nitrogen content was lostas volatile NH3 from the community during the reproductive period. Results suggested that the predominant net NH3 efflux from thevegetation was determined by the low concentration of NH3 inthe atmosphere ( 1.8 µg m–2) and the compensationconcentration point. However, N losses were balanced by annualnitrogen input to the community from precipitation and biologicalfixation. Thus, a redistribution rather than a loss of nitrogenseems to be occurring in the ecosystem. Carbon dioxide fluxes, ammonia fluxes, Trachypogon savannas, energy balance, growth analysis  相似文献

Water requirements in relation to seed production was studiedin near-isogenic lines of leafless (afafstst) and conventional(++++) pea plants (Pisum sativum). The plants were grown toseed maturity in pots in a controlled environment under conditionsof high, medium and low irrigation levels. When each genotypewas irrigated independently and on demand and the soil moisturecontent maintained at 65–80 per cent of full capacitythere was no significant phenotypic difference in water useefficiency (WUE), defined as g d. wt seed per kg H2O utilized. There existed genotypically-controlled upper and lower limitsto yield between which the total dry weight of seed per plantcan be determined by water availability. There was no significantdifferential effect of genotype or of irrigation treatment onthe number of pods, number of seed, unit seed dry weight andbiological yield per plant. There was significant interactionon stem length, and leaf area at specified nodes. When the wateractually required in relation to the water available was takeninto account, the leafless phenotype consistently utilized 33–38per cent less water and produced a correspondingly lower totaldry weight of seed than the conventional counterpart. Independentlyof regime the total dry weight seed per phenotype remained anear constant proportion of the above-ground biomass. The leaf growth, tiller production, light interception, anddry weight increase of a simulated sward of S24 perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne) were followed during the development of thesward from a collection of two-leaved seedlings to a closedcanopy with an LAI of 23, of which 15 consisted of green leaflaminae. The dry weight of live shoots increased exponentiallyat first, but then entered a long linear phase of increase. This was equivalent to a crop growth rate of 200 Kg ha–1day–1 and a conversion efficiency of radiant energy (400–700nm) of 7.2 per cent. Towards the end of the growth period therate of increase of live shoots declined rapidly to zero anda ceiling yield was reached equivalent to 10 metric tons ha–1.Leaf growth continued at a high rate, but was equalled by therate of leaf death, so that the weight of live leaf tissue remainedconstant. By this time the swards had achieved a stable tillerpopulation (about 1 cm–1), each tiller bore a constantnumber of live leaves (about three), and the length of eachnewly expanded leaf equalled the length of the old leaf it replaced(about 70 cm). The swards were grown in Perlite so that in theabsence of soil fauna dead leaves accumulated at the base ofthe sward where, after 12 weeks, they accounted for 19 per centof the total weight of dry matter produced.  相似文献

A comparative study, employing the concepts of growth analysis, has been made of the varying responses in the early vegetativephase of Gossypium hirsutum, Helianthus annuus, Phaseolus vulgaris, and Zea mays to combinations of light intensity (1.08, 2.16,3.24, 4.32, and 5.4 x 104 lx—photoperiod 14 h) and constantdiurnal air temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C).Depending on the combination of treatments, the temperatureof the internal tissues departed from air temperature by 6.9to 1.4 °C: so only the internal temperatures are cited here. For each species there are complex interactions between theeffects of light and temperature on the net assimilation rate, the leaf-area ratio, and the relative growth-rates of plantweight and leaf area. The magnitude of the changes induced bythe two factors vary both with the growth component and thespecies. The temperature responses are maximal up to 20–5°C while at the highest temperatures they may be negative. The temperature coefficients for leaf-area ratio are consistentlyless than those of the other three components: here betweenspecies the coefficients over 10–20 °C vary by a factorof 9.6, 5.4, and 5.1 for the rates of gain in plant weight andleaf area and the net assimilation rate, while the orderingwithin each growth component is species dependent. Under conditions of optimal temperature the relative growth-rateand net assimilation rate progressively increase, accordingto the species, up to either 4.32 or 5.4x 104 lx. The leaf-arearatio is always largest at the lowest intensity. The level oflight at which the rate of gain in leaf area reaches a maximumranges from 2.16x 104 lx for Phaseolus to between 4.32 and 5.40x104 lx for Gossypium. The highest relative growth-rate and net assimilation rate ofHelianthus exceed those of Zea substantially. Indeed the maximalassimilation rate for Helianthus of 2.10 g dm–2 week–1is the highest ever recorded under field or controlled conditions.Possible reasons for this reversal of the photosynthetic potentialsof the two species observed by previous workers are discussed.  相似文献

Effect of Photoperiod on Growth of Sugar Beet   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sugar beet grown in controlled environments were given similardaily amounts of visible radiation during three different photoperiodtreatments. Plants were given (a) 115 W m–2 visible irradiancefrom fluorescent and tungsten lamps for 12 h; (b) 88 W m–2of the same light for 16 h or (c) 115 W m–2 from fluorescentand tungsten lamps for 12 h extended to 16 h with low intensity(3 W m–2) incandescent light from the tungsten lamps only.Plant growth was increased similarly in both long day treatments[(b) and (c)] and dry weights were 25 per cent greater thanin the 12 h photoperiod (a) after 6 weeks. Leaf area was increasedby 18 per cent and net assimilation rate by 10 per cent in the16 h photoperiod at 88 W m–2 (b). By contrast, extendingthe photoperiod with 4 h of incandescent light (c) triggereda photomorphogenic increase in leaf expansion which increasedleaf area per plant by 47 per cent and leaf-area ratio by 12per cent.  相似文献

Plants of two cultivars of Callistephus chinensis (Queen ofthe Market and Johannistag) were grown in 8 h of daylight perday with one of the following treatments given during the 16h dark period: (a) darkness—‘uninterrupted night’,(b) I h of light in the middle of the dark period—a ‘nightbreak’, (c) I min of light in every hour of the dark period—‘cycliclighting’, (d) light throughout—‘continuouslight’. The plants receiving uninterrupted dark periods remained compactand rosetted in habit with small leaves, while leaf expansion, stem extension, and flower initiation were promoted in all threeillumination treatments (b, c, d). Although these three treatmentsproduced similar increases in leaf area, continuous light wasthe most effective for the promotion of both stem growth andflower initiation while cyclic lighting was generally more effectivethan a I-h night break. Continuous light also caused more dry matter to be divertedto stems at any given vegetative dry weight and it was shownthat the stem weight ratio of both varieties was correlatedwith stem length.  相似文献

Young tomato plants were grown from germination in water cultureat light-flux densities from 6 to 110 W m-2 (400–700 nm),daylengths from 8 to 24 h and CO2 concentrations from 0.4 to2.2 g CO2 m-3 in controlled environment cabinets. The growth rates and net assimilation rates of 14–17-day-oldplants at the highest light integrals were appreciably greaterthan most values previously recorded for tomato, and diminishedwith time. Plants in the lowest light conditions had leaf arearatios five times larger than those in the highest light, attributablemainly to a difference in leaf dry weight/area. Such flexibilityin leaf area ratio has not previously been associated with ‘sun’plants such as the tomato. Relatively normal growth was obtained in continuous light, incontrast to most other reports. This may have been due to theuse of conditions which would minimise water stress. The efficiency of the conversion of incident light energy tochemical energy by the whole plant ranged from 15 per cent inseedlings in low continuous light to about 6 per cent, tendingto be higher in young plants in long days under CO2 enrichment. The higher values are probably overestimates because of theexclusion of reflected light from the energy receipt values.  相似文献
