Abstract.
  • 1 Hadena moths drink nectar from, pollinate, and oviposit into the flowers of the genus Silene. In the gynodioecious Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke (Caryophyllaceae), eggs were laid by Hadena confusa (Hufn.) females both in male phase flowers, which could not be pollinated by the moth at the time of oviposition, and in female phase and female flowers that allowed pollination.
  • 2 Flowers in which an egg had been laid had a lowered probability of receiving a second egg laid by another female during the same night.
  • 3 The degree of flower discrimination by the moth with respect to the presence of eggs was positively correlated with the proportion of flowers containing eggs.
  • 4 The oviposition behaviour of H.confusa is moulded by four factors: (1) a high probability of chosen male phase flowers later becoming pollinated by other moths, (2) the presence of conspecific eggs and risk for larval competition, (3) probability of presence of conspecific eggs also in neighbouring flowers, (4) capability of larvae to move to adjacent flowers.

  • 1 Fecundity of Gammarus fossarum populations at six stream sites (S1-S6) and G. roeseli populations at two sites (S5 and S6) was studied monthly during 1985–1988, distinguishing seven morphological stages of embryonic development. Mean survival of G. fossarum eggs was 65% (60–70%) in nature and 60% (57–63%) in the laboratory; egg survival of G. roeseli was 52% (46–58%) in nature and 41% (35–47%) in the laboratory. Regressions of egg numbers per clutch against body wet weight (WWT) decreased significantly for egg developmental stages 2 to 7 (hatching).
  • 2 In stream populations, ovigerous females of G. fossarum were absent in October (six sites) and November (five sites); ovigerous G. roeseli were usually absent from October until March.
  • 3 Overall mean egg volume (EV) increased significantly from 0,08 ± 0.001 mm3 and 0.075 ± 0.001 mm3 for stage 2 eggs, to 0.174 ± 0.012mm3 and 0.160 ± 0.013 mm3 for stage 6 eggs of G. fossarum and G. roeseli, respectively. The dry weights of stage 2 eggs, stage 6 eggs and neonates (stage 7) were not significantly different, within and between species; mean dry weight was 36 ± 3 μg.
  • 4 Egg volumes and fecundity indices (FI, weight-specific number of eggs per clutch) were not significantly different between the same months of four successive years, so the data were pooled to give a single representative ‘year’. At most sites there were marked seasonal fluctuations in these variables. In both species, mean EV was largest for ‘winter’ eggs in December/January and smallest for ‘summer’ eggs in May, EV decreased during some months of the year when FI increased, and vice versa. Mean reproductive effort (RE = EV × FI) declined from high ‘winter’ values to low ‘summer’ values, and this difference was most marked at sites where the major foodstuff available was seasonally limited (autumn-shed tree leaves). Overall (‘annual’) mean RE was also lowest at these sites (S3 and S4) but was some 13% greater at sites where nutrients and food were present in the greatest quantifies (S5 and S6). Specific maximum potential body sizes and hence maximum potential fecundities (fifty-nine eggs for G. fossarum and eighty-seven eggs for G. roeseli) were attained only at S5 and 56. Mean RE was nearly identical for G. fossarum and G. roeseli from the same sites.
  • 5 At experimental temperatures (T) in the range 3.8–20.2°C, females of the same body weight carried significantly different egg numbers per clutch. The relationship between FI and T was described by a second-order polynomial. The calculated optimum T was 12.1°C for G. fossarum and 16.3°C for G. roeseli. Interspecific differences were highly significant.

  • 1 The vine weevil Otiorhynchus sulcatus is a major pest of horticultural crops worldwide, with root‐feeding larvae causing most damage. Adult oviposition aboveground may therefore influence levels of damage as the larvae are relatively immobile after oviposition.
  • 2 The present study investigated feeding and oviposition behaviour on red raspberry Rubus idaeus using intact plants, ensuring that choices reflected the realistic differences in cultivar appearance and chemical composition. Previous studies investigating vine weevil feeding and oviposition on other crops have used excised plant material, which may inadvertently influence behaviour.
  • 3 Adult weevils significantly preferred to feed on particular cultivars in the choice experiment (e.g. Tulameen), although they consumed significantly more foliage (0.22–1.03 cm2/day) on different raspberry cultivars (e.g. Glen Moy, Glen Rosa and a wild accession) in no‐choice situations.
  • 4 In choice experiments, weevils tended to avoid laying eggs on some cultivars (e.g. Glen Moy and the wild accession). The number of eggs laid (1.91–4.32 eggs per day) did not, however, differ significantly between the cultivars in a no‐choice situation. Foliar nitrogen and magnesium concentrations were positively, although weakly, correlated with the total number of eggs laid.
  • 5 The present study highlights the importance of considering both choice and no‐choice tests when assessing crop susceptibility to attack because weevils may avoid feeding on certain cultivars (e.g. Glen Moy) when given a choice, although this would cause significant damage to such cultivars if they were grown in monoculture (i.e. when there is no alternative).

  1. In gregarious insects, groups commonly originate from females laying eggs in masses and feeding groups are established as soon as larvae hatch. Some group-living insect species may aggregate beyond the individual parent level, such that offspring from two or more egg masses develop within a common resource.
  2. Here we show that aggregative oviposition can vary with population density at oviposition and possibly be an important factor in outbreak dynamics of phytophagous insects.
  3. We analysed density data with respect to egg mass aggregation for two species of pine processionary moths, Thaumetopoea pinivora (in Sweden 2005–2019) and T. pityocampa (in Spain 1973–1991). Both species lay their eggs in egg masses and feed in groups. During the study periods, insect population density for both species varied by at least an order of magnitude.
  4. The two species showed strikingly similar patterns of egg mass aggregation. Egg masses were overdispersed at high population density, with few trees showing a high load of egg masses.
  5. Our data suggest that aggregative oviposition can be important in explaining the previously documented higher propensity for outbreaks in insects laying eggs in clusters, compared with those laying individual eggs.

  1. A population of a salamander, Hynobius nebulosus tokyoensisTago was studied at Habu, Hinodemachi, in Tokyo during the breeding seasons from 1976 to 1978. Adults appeared in the pond were captured and marked individually by toe-clipping. Egg sacks were counted and tagged with vinyl tapes for the marking.
  2. The annual egg production of this population was found to be constant, about 6500 eggs, and total number of breeding adults appeared in the pond also varied little during three years.
  3. The appearance of breeding adults in the pond and oviposition seemed to be influenced by the rise of temperature and rainfall.
  4. Males appeared earlier in the pond and stayed there for approximately 10 to 20 days. On the other hand, females appeared later in the pond and left there soon after laying eggs.
  5. Mean clutch size and body length of breeding adults appeared in the pond showed a tendency to decrease as time proceeded, which seemed to show that the smaller and younger the salamander was, the later it appeared in the pond.
  6. Owing to low temperature, the eggs laid earlier took more time to hatch than those laid later.
  7. The survival rate of eggs was 67.2% in 1976, 86.4% in 1977 and 81.2% in 1978. The loss rate of eggs laid in the early and late periods of oviposition was higher than that of eggs laid in the middle period.

Phytophagous insects use a wide range of indicators or associated cues to avoid laying eggs in sites where offspring survival is low. For insects that lay eggs in flowers, these unsuitable sites may be created by the host plant's resource allocation to flowers. In the sequentially flowering host plant, Yucca glauca, late‐opening distal flowers are more likely to be aborted in the presence of already‐initiated basal fruits because they are strong resource sinks. If flowers are aborted, all eggs of the phytophagous insect, Tegeticula yuccasella, within the flower die. We used the phytophagous insect T. yuccasella that lays eggs in and pollinates host plant Y. glauca flowers to test the hypothesis that phytophagous insect females are less likely to invest eggs in host plant flowers if basal fruits are present because they are more likely to be aborted. We also investigated potential predictors of arrival of T. yuccasella at inflorescences at the onset of flowering. These factors may influence a phytophagous insect's decisions to select oviposition sites. We carried out a behavioral experiment using wild‐caught T. yuccasella females on manipulated inflorescences with distal flowers with basal fruits and without fruits. As potential predictors of T. yuccasella arriving at inflorescences, we used floral display size and day of onset of flowering. In support of our hypothesis, our experimental results showed that T. yuccasella was significantly less likely to oviposit in distal flowers on inflorescences with basal fruits. We also found that T. yuccasella arrival was higher at inflorescences with larger floral display size and earlier in the flowering season. These findings uncover a novel indicator of unsuitable oviposition sites—the presence of basal fruits, that phytophagous insects use to make oviposition decisions. Further, our study contributes to the growing body of evidence that shows that females prefer sites that increase the probability of survival of their offspring.  相似文献

  • 1 The oviposition behaviour of white‐spotted sawyer beetle Monochamus scutellatus (Say) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) females was studied under laboratory and field conditions.
  • 2 Females walked over the bark surface and stopped to palpate it with their labial and maxillary palpi. Once a potential oviposition site was located, the female excavated a scar in the bark with her mandibles, deposited an egg and brown plug in the scar and inserted her mandibles again into the scar prior to leaving the area.
  • 3 Female M. scutellatus preferred to lay eggs on bolts containing no eggs (control) to those containing eggs from other females, but did not show this preference when provided with control bolts and those containing their own eggs. When females were provided with bolts containing their own eggs and bolts containing eggs from other females, they laid more eggs on bolts containing their own eggs. Females laid more eggs on control bolts than on bolts containing their own larvae or larvae from other females.
  • 4 The brown plug in the oviposition scar may provide a protective barrier to the egg, a chemical message that the site is occupied, or both.

  1. Effects of the amount of food consumed on reproduction of the carabid beetle, Carabus yaconinus B., were studied in the laboratory by rearing beetles at different food levels, and the feeding and oviposition rates in the field were estimated on the basis of the relationships between the amount of food consumed, body weight and egg production obtained in the experiment.
  2. The maximum amount of food consumed was 150 mg of minced beef per day. The number of eggs laid per day and the mean body weight increased with an increase in the amount of food consumed. High mortality occurred only when the beetles consumed less than 25 mg of minced beef per day.
  3. The ratio of current body weight to the minimum one just before death by starvation, W/Wmin, was used for the estimation of the rates of food consumption and egg production. The relationships between mean W/Wmin ratio, the amount of food consumed and the number of eggs laid per day were clarified.
  4. The relationships between ovary states (ovary weight and the number of mature eggs in the ovary) and W/Wmin ratio were examined for the females caught in the field. Females with higher values of W/Wmin ratio had more mature eggs.
  5. The amount of food consumed by females in the field during the reproductive period was estimated to be 50–70% of the maximum value attained in the experiment and the estimated rate of oviposition was 45–59% of the maximum rate attained in the experiment.

  • 1 Preliminary investigations were carried out on Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu on Castanea sativa Miller in Tuscany to assess variations in gall characteristics in coppice and high forest at two crown heights (height < 2 or 2–6 m), influence of bud size and bud position on oviposition rates and susceptibility of three cultivars.
  • 2 Gall size may depend on various factors, including wasp population density. In the present study area, small galls (with one or two cells) were the most numerous in 2008, whereas larger galls (with more than three cells) prevailed in 2009.
  • 3 Dryocosmus kuriphilus oviposition occurrence was influenced by both bud size and bud position. Buds with eggs tended to be larger in size compared with bud without eggs, suggesting that D. kuriphilus females prefer to lay eggs in larger buds (approximately 6 mm3) compared with smaller buds (approximately 3 mm3). The mean number of eggs per bud tended to decrease from the apical bud toward the basal bud.
  • 4 Three C. sativa cultivars, Carpinese, Fusca and Cesurone, were examined. Fusca grafts had significantly more galls compared with Carpinese and Cesurone, whereas Cesurone grafts had more larvae per bud compared with Carpinese and Fusca. Overall, the Carpinese cultivar may be less susceptible to D. kuriphilus galling compared with the Fusca and Cesurone cultivars.

  1. Drought has become more common and severe in many parts of the world due to climate change. The effect of water stress on insect oviposition preference that is key determinant for their fitness has received less attention.
  2. Here, we examined how water stress may affect oviposition selection of Ostrinia furnacalis for maize plants in the greenhouse, and tested difference in volatile compounds emitted from treated maize, and electronantennogram and bioassay responses of O. furnacalis to the volatile profiles in maize plants.
  3. Ostrinia furnacalis were more prone to lay eggs on the well-watered maize. Most plant volatile compounds differed significantly among the three water treatments, including increased emissions of β-caryophyllene, (E)-2-hexenal, and linalool, and decreased emission of (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol when subjected to increasing intensity of drought.
  4. Varied volatile profiles of maize may drive oviposition decision of O. furnacalis, because O. furnacalis showed a clear oviposition preference for (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, while not for β-caryophyllene, (E)-2-hexenal, and linalool, at the concentration of 1000 ppm.
  5. This study advances understanding of drought effects on plant–insect interactions through volatile profiles. Our finding calls for attention to oviposition selection for insect pest management in agricultural settings, especially in regions under changing precipitation patterns.

  • 1 Delia flavifrons Zetterstedt (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) visits flowers of Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke (Caryophyllaceae), where the adults feed, mate, lay their eggs, and the larvae feed on developing seeds. The objective of the study was to examine how an ovipositing female fly assures a food resource for her progeny.
  • 2 Ovipositing females preferred young, non-pollinated flowers over older pollinated ones. The flies did not pollinate the flowers and survival of the larvae depended on the flowers being pollinated by moths.
  • 3 Flowers containing fly eggs were pollinated more often than expected from chance, probably as a result of both flies and moths visiting particular flowers.
  • 4 Eggs were laid singly, and multiple oviposition occurred randomly. Although most eggs hatched, only about half produced larvae that made their way into the fruits. As a result, the probability of competition arising from multiple oviposition may be reduced to such an extent that selection does not favour females that avoid flowers with conspecific eggs.
  • 5 Moth larvae of the noctuid genus Hadena also feed on the seed pods of S. vulgaris and will kill any fly larvae they encounter. However, there was no deviation from random oviposition by the flies in relation to eggs laid by the moths, but the competitively weaker fly usually started to lay eggs towards the end of the moth's egg-laying period.
  • 6 The relationship between Delia flavifrons and Silene vulgaris superficially parallels that for known pollinator/predator systems, but floral adaptations to hypothetically pollinating flies seems not to have taken place.

  • 1 When freshly eclosed females of the primitively eusocial wasp Ropalidia marginata (Lep.) are isolated, only about 50% of them build nests and lay eggs thereby suggesting a pre-imaginal biasing of caste.
  • 2 Wasps that lay eggs take a very variable amount of time after eclosion to start doing so.
  • 3 Females eclosing from nests where larvae are fed at a relatively higher rate are more likely to become egg-layers and are likely to take less time after eclosion to begin to lay eggs.
  • 4 Thus, both forms of pre-imaginal biasing of caste, namely, differences in egg laying capacity and differences in the time taken to attain reproductive maturity, appear to be influenced by larval nutrition.

Anthocoris nemorum L. and Anthocoris nemoralis Fabricius (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) are important predators of insect pests in pome fruit. Females insert their eggs in leaf tissue. The females’ choice of oviposition site is important for the subsequent distribution of nymphs on host plants. Oviposition preference for apple and pear leaves was tested in the laboratory in four experiments (experiments 1–4). In three experiments it was tested whether simulated insect damage to leaves (experiments 5 and 6) or the presence of prey (experiment 7) influenced oviposition preference. The effect of the presence of prey was only tested for A. nemorum on apple leaves. There was a highly significant anthocorid species × plant interaction for the number of eggs laid on apple and pear leaves. Anthocoris nemorum laid more eggs on apple than on pear leaves, while A. nemoralis preferred pear. Anthocoris nemorum's preference for apple increased over the 6‐week period in which experiments 1–4 were performed, from 66% to 91% eggs laid on apple leaves. No change over time in preference was found for A. nemoralis. Across experiments 1–4, the majority of A. nemorum eggs were laid near leaf margins, whereas eggs of A. nemoralis were more commonly found in the leaf centre, 5 mm or more from the margin, with a highly significant leaf region × species interaction. There was no significant difference in preference for leaf side between A. nemorum and A. nemoralis, but there was a highly significant plant × leaf side × experiment interaction. Thus, more eggs were laid on the ventral than on the dorsal side of pear leaves in experiment 4, while significantly more eggs were laid on the dorsal side of apple leaves in experiments 3 and 4. Choice tests between damaged and healthy leaves showed that A. nemorum laid significantly more eggs on the damaged leaves, while A. nemoralis preferred healthy leaves. Anthocoris nemorum showed a near‐significant preference for ovipositing on leaves with eggs of Operophtera brumata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae). The oviposition preferences found correspond to the natural distribution of these predators in apple and pear orchards. The preference of A. nemorum for leaf margins, and of A. nemoralis for the leaf centre as an oviposition site, supports earlier observations. A preference for leaf side for oviposition site has not been reported earlier. Preference for damaged leaves could help A. nemorum to locate prey in a field situation.  相似文献

  • 1 The butterfly Sandia xami (Reakirt) has a very clumped yearly pattern of oviposition on its food plant Echeveria gibbiflora D.C., and the mean number of eggs per plant is always very low.
  • 2 Three features of host plants are highly associated with the probability of being oviposited upon: height of plant; degree of conspicuousness; and degree of isolation from conspecific plants.
  • 3 The relative importance of these factors as predictors of the probability of oviposition change according to the time scale considered: height and conspicuousness are more important over short (weekly) time intervals whilst isolation takes precedence over longer (yearly) periods.
  • 4 It is hypothesized that the clumped pattern of oviposition is responsible for the low numbers of the butterflies relative to their very abundant food plant.

  • 1 The relationship between parasitization by Edovum puttleri Grissell and density of eggs of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), was studied on two spatial scales (eggs mass and 6 m2 cage).
  • 2 For both scales, rates of parasitism were generally inversely related to host density for periods ranging from 2 to 8 days after parasitoid release. Thereafter, parasitism became independent of host density.
  • 3 The initial inverse-density relationship and subsequent shift to density independence may result from several factors: (1) ambient temperatures, (2) the parasitoid's limited egg production, (3) differential times of exposure of egg masses to parasitoids, and/or (4) the parasitoid's patterns of host feeding and oviposition.
  • 4 Although overall levels of parasitism were relatively low, total mortality of L.decemlineata eggs (including nonviable and cannibalized eggs, and those killed by parasitoid feeding) in parasitized egg masses was consistently high (?70–90%).
