Gyrodactylus longidactylus n. sp., a gyrodactylid monogenean parasitising the gills of Pomatoschistus lozanoi (de Buen, 1923) in the North Sea is described. It is a species with rather small anchors which are only connected to a ventral bar which lacks a ventral bar membrane. The marginal hooks have long handles, which are always longer than the total length of the anchor. The pharynx has long pharyngeal processes. Measurements, drawings of the opisthaptoral hard parts, penis and pharynx, and SEM micrographs of this monogenean are presented. G. longidactylus n. sp. is the first monogenean species described from P. lozanoi.  相似文献

Genetic variation was assayed at 14 allozyme loci in estuarine, coastal and offshore samples of lozano's goby, Pomatoschistus lozanoi and the sand goby, P. minutus. Samples were taken from locations on the Belgian Continental Shelf and in the Schelde estuary with a range of environmental heterogeneity. We evaluate whether any differences in (1) the degree of genetic variation and (2) allele frequencies at the various loci exist within samples occurring in various habitats on the BCS and in the Schelde estuary. No significant differences in levels of genetic diversity were recorded between estuarine, coastal and offshore samples in either species. A temporally stable clinal gradient in allele frequencies at the two-allele locus GPI-A(*) was observed in P. lozanoi, differentiating the samples in an estuarine, coastal and offshore group. We suggest that these differences might be maintained by balancing selection at locus GPI-A(*).  相似文献

Data are presented on the food and gonadosomatic index of Pomatoschistus minutus obtained from the bycatch of a commercial shrimp trawler. P. minutus has a diverse diet including zooplankton and hyperbenthos but mainly epibenthic and benthic animals. During the spawning season males consumed high numbers of Pomatoschistus eggs, presumably after aggressive take–overs of territories. The food of P. minutus is compared to the food of P. lozanoi of the same size classes obtained from the same hauls. In the absence of data on predator and prey abundance the discussion on possible interference competition between the two species remains largely speculative.  相似文献

A deeper water species of the Mediterranean-Atlantic gobiid genus Pomatoschistus, P. norvegicus (Collett, 1903), is redescribed from syntype material, including details of the lateral-line system and a summary of geographical distribution. The systematic status of P. norvegicus is briefly discussed with reference to the other nominal species, P. minutus (Pallas) and P. lozanoi (De Buen), of the 'P. minutus' complex.  相似文献

An electrophoretic study of genetic variation at 31 loci in each of nine closely related gobiid species was carried out in order to assess their systematic relationships. The species used were: Pomatoschistus canestrinii, P. lozanoi, P. marmoratus, P. microps, P. minutus, P. norvegkus, P. pictus, Knipowitschia caucasica, Neogobius melanostomus. Genetic distances ( D ) and identities ( I ) were calculated by Nei's method for all 36 pairwise comparisons and dendrograms were constructed.
The results show that the very similar and cross-fertile species pair, P. lozanoi and P. minutus , have the highest I value; P. norvegkus has high I values with both species. Pomatoschistus marmoratus and P. microps also display high genetic similarity with each other. The remaining Pomatoschistus species and Knipowitschia caucasica are broadly and moderately equidistant from each other and from the five species refferred to above, while Neogobius melanostomus is considerably more distant from all other species.
These findings essentially agree with the pattern of relationships established using classical taxonomic approaches. However, the observation that Knipowitschia caucasica is as similar to Pomatoschistus spp. as the latter are to each other suggests that the generic distinction of Knipowitschia could usefully be reconsidered.  相似文献

Gyrodactylus rugiensis was originally described as a parasite occurring on the marine gobies Pomatoschistus minutus and Pomatoschistus microps. In our preliminary survey this species was also frequently found on Pomatoschistus pictus and Pomatoschistus lozanoi. Subsequent molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacers rDNA region revealed that this parasite actually represents a complex of two apparently cryptic species, one restricted to P. microps and the other shared by P. minutus, P. lozanoi and P. pictus. Morphometric analyses were conducted on 17 features of the opisthaptoral hard parts of specimens collected from all four host species. Standard discriminant analysis showed a clear separation of both genotypes by significant differences in marginal hook and ventral bar features. Statistical classifiers (linear discriminant analysis and nearest neighbours) resulted in an estimated misclassification rate of 4.7 and 3.1%, respectively. Based on molecular, morphological and statistical analyses a new species, Gyrodactylus rugiensoides is described. This species seems to display a lower host-specificity than generally observed for Gyrodactylus species as it infects three sympatric host species.However, seasonal and host-dependent morphometric variation is shown for G. rugiensoides collected on P. pictus. Host-switching and gene flow might be important factors preventing speciation on closely related and sympatric host species. The presence of host associated species complexes in this Gyrodactylus-Pomatoschistus system is also confirmed by the presence of two host-dependent genotypes within G. micropsi found on P. minutus and P. lozanoi, and P. microps, respectively. By comparing host and parasite phylogeny, phylogenetic and ecological factors influencing host-specificity are discussed.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Growth rate of Parameletus minor was greatest between 10.8 and 19.8°C, survival rate peaked at 5.9°C, developmental time was shortest at 14.6°C, and adult size and fecundity reached maximum values between 5.9 and 10.8°C. Growth rate of P. chelifer was greatest between 14.6 and 19.8°C, survival rate peaked at 5.9°C, and developmental time was shortest at 14.6°C. A large adult size was found at 10.8°C, and highest fecundity between 10.8 and 14.6°C.
2. Food quality significantly affected growth rate, developmental time, adult size and fecundity of both species. Both P. chelifer and P minor attained highest growth rate, largest adult size and highest fecundity when the C/N ratio of food was 5.95. Developmental time was shortest at a C/N ratio between 5.95 and 12.8.
3. Nymphs of P. chelifer had a higher temperature 'optimum' for growth than nymphs of P. minor . Growth rate of nymphs of P. chelifer reared on detritus from a seasonal stream (C/N ratio 12.8) was about 3 times that of nymphs reared on detritus from a river margin (C/N ratio 20.9). The corresponding growth rate difference for nymphs of P. minor was only about 1.5.

Tree growth and survival were assessed in 283 populations of Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) originating from a broad geographic range and grown at 90 common-garden experimental sites across Europe, and in 101 populations grown at 14 sites in North America. Growth and survival were analysed in response to climatic transfer distance, the difference in mean annual temperature (MAT) between the site and the population origin. Differences among populations at each site, and across sites for regional groups of populations, were related to climate transfer distance, but in opposite ways in the northern vs. southern parts of the species range. Climate transfers equivalent to warming by 1–4 °C markedly increased the survival of populations in northern Europe (≥ 62°N, < 2 °C MAT) and modestly increased height growth ≥ 57°N but decreased survival at < 62°N and modestly decreased height growth at < 54°N latitude in Europe. Thus, even modest climate warming will likely influence Scots pine survival and growth, but in distinct ways in different parts of the species range.  相似文献

Behavioural and metabolic reactions of Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas) exposed to various degrees of hypoxia were studied. At 15°C and 20‰ mortality was 50% at 15.2% oxygen saturation. Avoidance and oxygen saturation showed a linear inverse relationship. At levels lower than 60% saturation increased activity occurred; avoidance was significant at 30% saturation. Active, routine and standard MO2 correlated linearly with weight at 6 and 15°C (salinity = 19‰). During hypoxia at 15°C routine MO2 rose significantly at 60–50% and 40–30% saturation expressed either as MO2 during longer periods at night or MO2 at shorter intervals during the day. Standard MO2 was unaffected by hypoxia at 15°C. Haemoglobin concentration was significantly increased when P. minutus was acclimatized to 35% saturation.  相似文献

Abstract .The blow fly Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae) has a wide distribution across northern and temperate Europe. It has a facultative, maternally-induced larval diapause in response to short days. The photoperiodic response, measured at 15 and 20°C, of two populations was compared. A southern population (originating at 51° N) was sensitive to temperature at all daylengths; the incidence of diapause was greatly reduced at 20°C compared with 15°C. The photoperiodic response of a northern population (from 65° N) was sensitive to temperature only in long days; in short days (< 14 h of light) the response of this strain was identical at each temperature.
Variation in parental photoperiod and temperature were found to affect the duration of larval diapause, indicating a role for maternal effects in diapause intensity as well as incidence. However, the between-strain variation was greater than that within strains, indicating qualitative differences in diapause response. These differences may arise from the ecological conditions at the points of origin of the two strains. The northern strain from the harsher climate has a more intense diapause that follows a relatively temperature-insensitive photoperiodic response. In contrast, the southern strain has a shallow diapause and its photoperiodic response may be overridden by the experience of concurrent high temperature.  相似文献

Specimens of Potamotrygonocestus used in the present taxonomic and phylogenetic study were collected in freshwater potamotrygonids from the Rio Paraná (Puerto Reconquista, Santa Fé, Argentina; 59°42'W, 29°29'S) during February 1995, and from the Amazon region of Brazil during September to December 1996, supplemented by specimens previously deposited in museum collections. Six species of Potamotrygonocestus were recognized ( P . amazonensis , P . chaoi sp. n., P . fitzgeraldae sp. n., P . magdalenensis , P . maurae sp. n., P . travassosi ), for which an identification key is provided. Potamotrygonocestus orinocoensis is considered a junior synonym of P . travassosi . Additional specimens of Potamotrygonocestus may represent two undescribed species. A phylogenetic analysis of six morphological characters for the six named species of Potamotrygonocestus generated a single tree eight steps long, with a consistency index of 0.87, a retention index of 0.90, and a rescaled consistency index of 0.79 with the following topology: ( P . maurae sp. n. Seven new species of limpets from hydrothermal vents are described in five new genera in the new family Peltospiridae (new superfamily Peltospiracea). Limpets in this family are known only from the hydrothermal vent community at two sites, near 21°N and 13°N, on the East Pacific Rise. New genera and species are: Peltospira , type species P. operculuta from both sites, and P. delicata from 13°N; Nodopelta , type species N. heminoda from both sites, and N. subnoda from 13°N; Rhynchopelta , type species R. concentrica from both sites; Echinopelta , type species E. fistulosa from 21°N; Hirtopelta , type specics H. hirta from 13°N. These limpets are associated with the Pompei worm Alvinella , except for Rhynchopelta, which is associated with the vestimentifcran worm Riftia .  相似文献

Abstract: The influence of temperature on life table parameters of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Het., Pentatomidae) fed with Alabama argillacea (Hübner) (Lep., Noctuidae) larvae was studied. This predator was kept at constant temperatures of 20, 23, 25, 28, 30 and 33±0.2°C, at relative humidity of 60±10% and photoperiod of L : D 14 : 10. Gross (GRR) and net ( R 0) reproductive rates of P. nigrispinus ranged from 1.6 to 366.6 and from 0.02 to 189.5 females/female at temperatures of 33 and 28°C, respectively; generation time ( T  ) ranged from 33.3 (33°C) to 85.5 (20°C) days; doubling time ( D ) from 0.82 (33°C) to 17.8 (20°C) days; intrinsic rate of increase ( r m ) from −0.13 (33°C) to 0.12 (28°C) per day; and the finite rate of increase ( λ ) from 0.88 (33°C) to 1.12 (28°C) females/female added to the population per day. The ideal age to release P. nigrispinus should be when this predator presents higher reproductive values (VR x ); that is, its adults are about 7 days old, independent of prevailing temperature. Population growth of P. nigrispinus was affected by temperature with maximum numerical response between 28 and 30°C. The negative population growth shown at 33°C may not occur in natural conditions due to milder microclimate in the cotton agroecosystem and due to oscillations of temperature in the course of the day.  相似文献

The mean body size of workers of the holarctic ant Leptothorax acervorum increases with latitude. Workers from populations near the Polar Circle were 10% larger than workers from central Europe. This gradient does not appear to be associated with variation in colony size. According to controlled rearing experiments with brood from populations in Cape Kartesh, Karelia (67°N) and Erlangen, Germany (49.7°N), larger adult body size in boreal populations is not an epiphenomenon of slow cell growth and larger cell size at lower temperatures. Larger workers survived longer without food both at room temperature and <0°C, suggesting that selection for increased fasting endurance in boreal habitats might lead to this Bergmann's rule-like pattern in an ectothermic ant.  相似文献

Abstract The Pamphilius sylvaticus group is redefined to include seventeen species in the Holarctic: sylvaticus (Linnaeus), fumipennis (Curtis) and nemorum (Gmelin) from Europe; alnicola Ermolenko, daisenus Takeuchi, volatilis (Smith), benesi sp.n., gracilis sp.n., japoni-cus sp.n. and montanus sp.n. from northeastern Asia (mainly Japan); burquei (Provancher), cinctus Harrington, middlekauffi Shinohara & Smith, ocreatus (Say), rileyi (Cresson) and semicinctus (Norton) from eastern N. Predation abilities of Podisus maculiventris and Podisus nigrispinus on caterpillars of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), were compared at three different temperatures (18, 23 and 27°C) by performing functional response tests. In both species, predation capacity was a function of temperature and prey density: more prey were captured as temperature and number of prey offered increased. Results indicated that type II and III functional responses provided the best fit to the data obtained for P. nigrispinus at 18 and 23°C, and at 27°C, respectively. However, the data for P. maculiventris showed a better fit to type II at 18°C and to type III at higher temperatures. In both pentatomids the handling time decreased with increasing temperature. At higher temperatures, P. nigrispinus demonstrated greater predation rates than P. maculiventris . The implications of these findings for the control of caterpillar pests in glasshouses are discussed.  相似文献

A new species of macrourid, Coryphaenoides paramarshalli is described from mid to lower slope waters (l 13–160 m) off West Africa, in the area 04°S-21°N and 10°E-18°W. The species is very closely related to C. marshalli . Indeed, two of the paratypes of that species are incorporated among the paratypes of C. paramarshalli , as they are referrable to the new species. The features distinguishing the two species are discussed in conjuction with those separating C. paramarshalli from other related species.  相似文献
