Environmental conditions experienced early in life have been shown to significantly affect growth trajectories at later stages in many vertebrate species. Amphibians typically have a biphasic life history, with an aquatic larval phase during early development and a subsequent terrestrial adult phase after completed metamorphosis. Thus, the early conditions have an especially strong impact on the future survival and fitness of amphibians. We studied whether early nutritional conditions affect the behavioural reaction of fire salamander larvae (Salamandra salamandra) before completion of metamorphosis. Fire salamander larvae reared under rich nutritional conditions were heavier and larger, displayed better body condition overall throughout the first three month of life and metamorphosed earlier compared with larvae raised under poor nutritional conditions. Specifically, we tested whether larvae reared under these different conditions differed with respect to their risk‐taking behaviour and activity. We found no differences in the activity of larvae with respect to their experienced early food conditions. However, larvae reared under poor nutritional conditions hid significantly more often in a risk‐taking test than larvae reared under rich food conditions. This increase in shelter‐seeking behaviour might be an adaptation to reduce the risk of larval drift or an adaptation to compensate for physiological deficits in part by appropriate behavioural reactions. Our results indicate that environmental conditions, such as food availability, may lead to different behavioural strategies.  相似文献

Salamandra salamandra (L.) larvae were studied in three types of aquatic systems, a permanent spring, a rock pool and temporary ponds. Growth was followed throughout ontogenesis until completion of metamorphosis. Growth patterns changed according to the pond type. Temporary ponds were rich in organic matter and subsequently larvae matured more rapidly there than those in a permanent pool or a spring. In the latter, cannibalism appears to be of major ecological importance, enabling survival and metamorphosis of large size tadpoles. The pattern of growth and metamorphosis is compared with European salamanders and the differences are discussed considering adaptations for survival of this species under xeric conditions.  相似文献

Abstract

Larvae of Inopus rubriceps (Macquart) were reared from eggs originating from spring and autumn adult emergence periods (1975–78), under both insectary and field conditions. Rate of development appeared to depend largely on temperature. Autumn-hatched larvae showed little growth for the initial 6 months, but then grew rapidly until the end of summer. Spring-hatched larvae also grew rapidly over summer, but their development slowed over winter. Year-to-year differences were found in larval survival, weight gain, and rate of development, and in subsequent adult emergence. Pest status appeared to be related to the cumulative yearly heat budget. Overall, larval survival was higher and growth and development were more rapid in the insectary than under field conditions. A male-dominant sex ratio was demonstrated.  相似文献

The Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, is a commercially exploited decapod which is widely distributed throughout the north-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Ovigerous females originating from the Mediterranean and the Irish Seas were held in the laboratory until larvae hatched. Biomass and biochemical composition, as well as digestive gland structure, were examined in newly hatched larvae from these two regions. In addition, previously published data from a North Sea population were included in our comparison. Elemental analyses showed that the absolute quantities of dry mass (DM), carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and hydrogen (H) (collectively referred to as CHN) per individual, and the C:N mass ratios, were significantly lower, while the relative CHN, protein and lipid values (in % of DM) were higher in samples from the Irish Sea compared to larvae originating from either the Mediterranean or the North Sea. As in CHN, the absolute level of protein per individual was higher in larvae from the Mediterranean, while no significant differences were observed in the individual lipid contents. Likewise, the digestive gland structure at hatching did not show any differences between study areas. Intraspecific variability in biomass and chemical composition of newly hatched larvae from different regions may be related to differential patterns of reproduction in regions with different climatic conditions. Lobster larvae hatch in the Mediterranean Sea predominantly in winter when both water temperature and planktonic food availability are at a minimum, while hatching in the Irish Sea occurs under more favourable conditions in spring. Hence, significantly higher wet mass, dry mass and protein values in Mediterranean larvae may represent adaptive traits allowing for early posthatching survival and development under food-limited conditions in an oligotrophic environment.Communicated by H.-D. The infectivity of infective juveniles(IJs) of Heterorhabditis megidis (strain NLH-E87.3) produced on small, medium and large larvae ofGalleria mellonella, and on medium and largelarvae of Otiorhynchus sulcatus was tested underlaboratory conditions against G. mellonella andO. sulcatus larvae. Infective juvenilesoriginating from small G. mellonella exposed toan initial dose of one IJ were more infectious thanthose from small cadavers exposed to a dose of 30 IJs.Independent of the initial inoculum size, IJs fromsmall cadavers of G. mellonella were moreinfectious than those from medium and large cadavers.At a dose of one IJ per larva, IJs originating frommedium size O. sulcatus cadavers were moreinfective against G. mellonella than againstO. sulcatus larvae. The adaptations of young insect larvae to factors causing mortality may not depend on whole-body size but may instead depend substantially on the size of specific body parts. Using two closely related plant species, Arabis flagellosa, which has leaves that are tougher and difficult to digest, and A. gemmifera, which has leaves that are softer and difficult to convert, we showed that larvae of the butterfly Pieris napi exhibit specific adaptations through changes in body-part size based on different traits of their host plants. For a given egg size, the head widths of hatchlings from eggs collected from A. flagellosa were significantly larger than those of hatchlings from eggs collected from A. gemmifera. In addition, larger heads were accompanied by smaller abdomens in hatchlings originating from A. flagellosa, whereas the opposite pattern was observed in hatchlings from A. gemmifera. The time to completion of the first feeding on leaves of A. gemmifera was not affected by either egg or head size regardless of the original food plant. However, the time to completion of the first feeding on A. flagellosa decreased with increasing head size of hatchlings, regardless of the original food plant. Furthermore, even though egg sizes did not differ between treatments, larvae originating from A. gemmifera and A. flagellosa exhibited similar weight gain on leaves of A. flagellosa, whereas larvae originating from A. gemmifera gained more weight than larvae from A. flagellosa when reared on leaves of A. gemmifera. These results suggest that selection in young larvae for adaptations to environmental conditions may operate on specific larval body-part sizes.  相似文献

Larvae of the African armyworm, Spodoptera exempta, are darker and more resistant to baculovirus infection when reared in groups (gregarious form) compared to being reared singly (solitary form). Lepidoptera that survive virus challenge as larvae could potentially retain a sublethal virus infection which is then transmitted vertically to the next generation. Here we examine whether gregarious and solitary forms of the armyworm differ in the costs of surviving virus infection and in their capacity to transmit an active baculovirus infection to their offspring. Pupae of larvae reared gregariously that survived virus challenge weighed significantly less than uninfected individuals, but this was not so for those reared solitarily. This did not, however, translate into differences in fecundity, at least under laboratory conditions. As found in previous studies, pre-oviposition period was shorter for solitary than gregarious insects, and it was also shorter for females that had been challenged with virus as larvae. Both the prevalence of egg batches containing larvae that died from nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) infection and the proportion of infected larvae within each egg batch were significantly increased (approximately doubled) when parental moths were previously challenged with the virus during their larval state. This demonstrates that horizontal transmission in one generation can elevate vertical transmission to the next generation. Moreover, prevalence of overt infection in the offspring generation was two to three times greater when parental moths were reared solitarily as larvae than when reared gregariously. Disease prevalence and proportional infection were both independent of the sex of the infected parent and whether or not the egg batch was surface-sterilized to remove potential contaminants. This suggests that the eggs are infected internally (transovarial) rather than externally (transovum). These results help to shed light on the observed temporal pattern of virus epizootics in eastern Africa.  相似文献

Although classically thought to be rare, female polyandry is widespread and may entail significant fitness benefits. If females store sperm over extended periods of time, the consequences of polyandry will depend on the pattern of sperm storage, and some of the potential benefits of polyandry can only be realized if sperm from different males is mixed. Our study aimed to determine patterns and consequences of polyandry in an amphibian species, the fire salamander, under fully natural conditions. Fire salamanders are ideal study objects, because mating, fertilization and larval deposition are temporally decoupled, females store sperm for several months, and larvae are deposited in the order of fertilization. Based on 18 microsatellite loci, we conducted paternity analysis of 24 female‐offspring arrays with, in total, over 600 larvae fertilized under complete natural conditions. More than one‐third of females were polyandrous and up to four males were found as sires. Our data clearly show that sperm from multiple males is mixed in the female's spermatheca. Nevertheless, paternity is biased, and the most successful male sires on average 70% of the larvae, suggesting a ‘topping off’ mechanism with first‐male precedence. Female reproductive success increased with the number of sires, most probably because multiple mating ensured high fertilization success. In contrast, offspring number was unaffected by female condition and genetic characteristics, but surprisingly, it increased with the degree of genetic relatedness between females and their sires. Sires of polyandrous females tended to be genetically similar to each other, indicating a role for active female choice.  相似文献

Summary Adults and larvae of Chrysomela aenicollis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) feed on foliage of Salix species (Salicaceae) between 2,400–3,400 m above sea level in the eastcentral Sierra Nevada mountains of California. We predicted that (1) cold climatic conditions would be a more frequent source of mortality at higher elevations, (2) mildweather agents of mortality such as predation should be more severe at lower elevations, and (3) populations of C. aenicollis would be adapted to the local selective regime at each elevation. We tested these predictions in 1984 and 1985 by transferring over 6,000 eggs and larvae within and between two sites at 2,810 and 3,240 m elevation above sea level. During mild summer weather at both sites, survivorship on Salix branches isolated by a barrier of sticky resin was similar to that on control branches, and we concluded that aerial predators were the primary cause of mortality. At least one major predator, a solitary wasp (Symmorphus sp., Hymenoptera: Eumenidae), was specifically associated with C. aenicollis at the lower site, where beetle mortality was highest. At both sites in 1984 and 1985, larvae originating from the lower site remained in aggregations and survived more frequently than larvae from the upper site, suggesting that they are better defended against predators. During a storm with cold weather late in the 1984 season, larvae and pupae died more frequently at the upper site, and there was a marginally significant trend (P<0.1) for the lower site individuals to die more frequently than upper site larvae during the cold storm. Upper site larvae grew approximately 10% faster than lower site larvae at the lower site and under controlled conditions in the laboratory. These findings indicate that upper and lower site populations were adapted to the local selective regime, which suggest how populations of montane phytopagous insects may adapt to changing elevations.  相似文献

As part of a study on the pigmentary system of Salamandra salamandra salamandra (L.), we cultured skin fragments of 7–10-day-old larvae in order to examine the expression of molecules implicated in cellular adhesion and migration and in regulating cell-cell relationships. Keratinocytes, fibroblasts, Leydig cells, xanthophores, and melanophores migrated from the fragments and were observed in the outgrowth. Keratinocytes and fibroblasts organized into an epidermal layer and an underlying “dermal portion.” The chromatophores were always located below the epithelial cells, often with fibroblasts. We examined by immunocytochemistry the expression of fibronectin, β1-integrin, L-CAM, and A-CAM in the cultures. Many keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and Leydig cells expressed all the signal molecules tested. Xanthophores and melanophores were only immunoreactive to the anti-adhesion molecules antisera. Since the molecules tested are known to play a role in cell adhesion, growth, and spreading, as well as in regulating tissue differentiation and in maintaining normal tissue morphology, we may hypothesize that in Salamandra salamandra salamandra fibronectin, β1-integrin, L-, and A-CAMS concertedly act to stabilize the architecture of the outgrowth and regulate the relationships between chromatophores and those between chromatophores and the other elements of the skin culture.  相似文献

1. This study examined the longitudinal distribution of larval fire salamanders ( Salamandra salamandra salamandra L.) in the Weidlingbach system, a first- to fourth-order tributary of the Danube near Vienna, Austria. On the microhabitat scale, actual current velocities, Reynolds numbers and Froude numbers at larval locations were measured and larval positions mapped.
2. Larval densities were highest in shallow first- and second-order tributaries where mean current speeds were less than 20 cm s−1, mean Reynolds numbers were less than 12 000 and mean Froude numbers were less than 0.30. Young larvae appeared on 26 April, fully grown larvae were observed from 11 May and larvae started metamorphosis from 27 June. Young adults left the brook between 26 August and 8 September. A severe flood on 25 May significantly reduced larval density, especially at sites near the source.
3. At a given sampling station young larvae favoured microhabitats exposed to only minor hydraulic stress. As larvae grew, they also colonized microhabitats with moderate current velocity (4–15 cm s−1). At sites with generally low discharge, larvae were distributed over a wider range of current velocities than at sites with higher discharge; at the latter, larvae were constricted to sheltered microhabitats.  相似文献

Summary The ability of viable cells of the species Pseudomonas putida and Hyphomicrobium sp. to metabolize the particulate and soluble cellular organic constituents of both species was studied in a series of batch experiments. Both P. putida and Hyphomicrobium sp. were grown in individual batch reactors on either the 14C-labelled soluble or the particulate debris of sonicated cells of each species derived from steady-state chemostat cultures. Cell generation times (t g)observed for P. putida cultivated on soluble organic material originating from either sonicated P. putida or Hyphomicrobium sp. cells, were t g= 2.0 h and t g= 6.3 h, respectively. Corresponding t gvalues of Hyphomicrobium sp. on soluble organic material originating from sonicated P. putida and Hyphomicrobium so. were, respectively, 11.6 h and 4.3 h. While particulate debris originating from either species was solubilized by both P. putida and Hyphomicrobium sp., no increases in cell numbers were observed for either species. The data indicate that bacteria are capable of scavenging soluble material released upon cell lysis at near maximal rates; solubilization of debris also occurred but at much slower overall rates with no observable cell replication. The results reaffirm that cryptic growth and turnover of cellular biomass can be significant under situations of low substrate flux or starvation conditions. Offprint requests to: J. D. The production of bacterial enzymes in batch fermentations is compared with results obtained in continuous culture. When studying the production of α-amylase inBacillus subtilis it was found that instability of the enzyme synthesis was due to nonhomogeneity of the population rather than to “the culture’s history” (i.e. succession of several physiological states necessary for the enzyme production). The plasmid contained in the production clone was found to be the factor responsible for the α-amylase production. Predominance of the production clone or of the nonproduction one depends on the cultivation conditions used. As compared with batch cultivation the continuous production yields higher enzyme concentrations under optimal conditions and the fermentor productivity may be four to five times higher.  相似文献

To investigate the photoreception that controls daily oscillations at the periphery in insects, we decapitated larvae of the silkworm Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) by ligature, and observed rhythms in their peripheral tissues under several light conditions. We measured the mRNA expression of period (per) and timeless (tim), which are homologues of Drosophila clock genes that function in the core oscillator of the circadian clock system. The expression of both per and tim significantly changed in the midgut, Malpighian tubules and silk glands of decapitated larvae exposed to photophase and scotophase that were reversed from the original daily light–dark cycle under which the larvae were housed. Under constant darkness, the daily expression of tim mRNA persisted for at least one cycle in the midgut and silk gland. In addition, an appropriate light stimulus under constant darkness induced a significant phase shift in the endogenous timing system (probably a circadian clock) that determined peak levels of tim mRNA expression in the midgut and silk glands of decapitated larvae. Since light regulated the gene expression rhythm in peripheral tissues of decapitated silkworm larvae, neither the brain nor eyes were essential for photoreception to control daily oscillations in these tissues. Thus, peripheral tissues in insects might directly use light even at the larval stage.  相似文献

Trichinella spiralis infected rat carcasses were incubated for 6 weeks in several animal feeds to assess how long Trichinella can present a risk for an outbreak in contaminated feeds. In groups of 6, 24 infected target rats were placed in silage, grained barley, propionic acid-preserved feed, and also into simulated pasture conditions. Test environments were sampled after one-, 2-, 4-, and 6-week-incubations. Trichinella larvae were recovered by digestion, and their infectivity was evaluated in rats. A two-week incubation reduced the number of recovered larvae, but still after 6 weeks low numbers were isolated from all feeds except from the experimental group simulating pasture conditions. After 2 weeks storage, the larvae were infective in all storage environments. However, up to 4 weeks, they survived only in the propionic acid-fermented feed and there in small numbers with reduced reproductive capability. This indicates the possibility of farm animals to get infection from rats or other infected material being hazardously mixed with hay or other feed. If silage is stored for at least one month before use, however, the risk from this forage appears to be minimized.  相似文献

This work examined behavioural responses in yolk‐sac rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss larvae originating from strains selected for high (HR) or low (LR) plasma cortisol response to a standardized stressor. The results showed that yolk‐sac larvae originating from the HR strain were more sensitive to environmental stressors, in that they showed a shorter reaction time to low oxygen levels. Previous studies on adult and juvenile individuals from these strains demonstrated a number of correlated physiological and behavioural differences. In yolk‐sac larvae, growth and development depended mainly on internal factors, which suggest that at least some aspects of stress‐coping styles are inherent to the individual, before factors such as social experience or variable access to food resources could modify behavioural strategy.  相似文献

  • 3 Within susceptible clones, survival of larvae on individual trees was positively related to their degree of natural infestation.

  • 5 Five forest trees which acted as both donors of larvae and as hosts for artificial inoculation were each inoculated with larvae from all five trees.

Summary Based on evidence from field manipulations, several authors have recently suggested that interference competition among larval odonates reduces individual growth rates and biomass by reducing foraging rates. This study was designed to test the effects of food shortage on condition (relative mass per unit head width) of larval Ischnura verticalis (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) under laboratory conditions and to use these results to estimate the degree of food shortage of larvae under naturally occurring field conditions. In the laboratory, there were marked differences in condition of larvae fed diets ranging from ad libitum feeding with worms to ad libitum feeding with Daphnia 1 day out of every 8. Condition of larvae collected from May through October from 17 different sites in southern Ontario indicated that, for most of the year, larvae had conditions similar to those fed ad libitum with Daphnia in the laboratory. There was no evidence that larval condition was related to population density. Condition of larvae in most sites during July was similar to that of larvae fed poor diets in the laboratory. It is unlikely that the low conditions were due to competition as there were no correlations with density across sites and population densities during July were at their lowest. Adult head widths showed a seasonal decline from mid June to the end of the flight season. There was no evidence that head widths were related to population density although there was some evidence that head widths of males were positively related to larval condition. My results do not support the hypothesis that competition is important in affecting foraging rates and subsequent development of larvae. Contrasts between my results and other studies may stem from difficulties with the interpretation of field experiments, that densities in my study may have been low due to fish predation, and/or that I. verticalis larvae are slow moving relative to other larvae and thus less likely to interact.  相似文献

We evaluated the consequences of parasitism by the solitary ichneumonid endoparasitoid Campoletis sonorensis(Cameron) towards the replication, genetic composition and virulence of a nucleopolyhedrovirus (Baculoviridae) originating from Spodoptera frugiperda(J. E. Smith) larvae. Parasitism by C. sonorensisand viral infection of third and fourth instar S. frugiperdalarvae resulted in reduced growth compared with nonparasitized control larvae. A positive correlation was observed between virus yield and larval instar at the moment of infection. When larvae were virus-inoculated in the fourth instar, parasitism resulted in a significant reduction in mean per capita virus yield compared to the virus yield from nonparasitized larvae. In an experiment involving 10 serial passages of virus in both parasitized and nonparasitized larvae, restriction endonuclease analysis of viral DNA amplified in nonparasitized larvae revealed the presence of the wild-type virus as well as three additional variants (A, B, and C) diagnosed by the presence of novel submolar PstI fragments of different sizes. In contrast, analysis of viral DNA from parasitized larvae showed the presence of the wild-type virus and two other variants (E and F), each characterized by a different submolar BglII fragment. Southern blot analysis indicated that the submolar fragments of variants E and F contained sequences originating from the viral genome. Bioassay of the different virus variants in S. frugiperdalarvae indicated that their virulence was equal or less than that of the wild-type virus. We conclude that parasitism can affect the quantity of virus produced in dually infected and parasitized larvae, but no adverse effects were detected in terms of the biological activity of the virus.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of heat stress on the responsiveness to vibrational cues, our measure of perceptual ability, in Myrmeleon bore antlion larvae (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae). We reared these trap-building predatory larvae under 2 heat stress regimes (mild, 30°C, and harsh, 36°C), and after they progressed from one instar stage to another, we tested their perceptual ability in common unchallenging conditions. We hypothesized that exposure to the harsh heat stress regime would impose costs resulting in handicapped vibration responsiveness. We found that the harsh heat stress regime generated more stressful conditions for the larvae, as evidenced by increased mortality and postponed molting, and the loss of body mass among larger larvae. Furthermore, among the individuals who remained alive, those originating from the harsh heat stress regime were characterized by higher vibration responsiveness. Our results suggest 2 not mutually exclusive scenarios. Costly heat stress conditions can sieve out individuals characterized by poor perceptual ability or surviving individuals can attempt to hunt more efficiently to compensate for the physiological imbalance caused by heat stress. Both of these mechanisms fit into the ongoing debate over how adaptation and plasticity contribute to shaping insect communities exposed to heat stress.  相似文献
