The developmental rate of immature stages and the reproduction of adults of Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank), T. neiswanderi Johnston and Bruce and Acarus farris (Oudemans) were examined at 70, 80 and 90% r.h. and a constant temperature of 25°C. At 70% r.h., T. putrescentiae and A. farris immature stages failed to reach the protonymph stage as 100% of the larvae died, whereas T. neiswanderi was able to complete development. The developmental time of all immature stages for the three species was significantly increased as relative humidity was reduced. The mobile stages were particularly susceptible, as the time needed to complete their development at lower relative humidities suffered greater increases than the egg stage. At 70% r.h., T. putrescentiae and A. farris were not able to lay eggs and only 24% of T. neiswanderi pairs were fertile. The reproductive parameters of the three species at the relative humidities at which they were able to lay eggs showed significant differences, except for the percentage of fertile mating at 80 and 90% r.h. As relative humidity increased, preoviposition period was reduced and fecundity and daily fecundity was increased, whereas the oviposition period showed different patterns for the three species. The intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) of T. neiswanderi at 70% r.h. was negative indicating that, at these conditions, mite populations of this species will diminish until they disappear. As relative humidity increased from 80 to 90% r.h. this parameter was almost twofold for both Tyrophagus species. The r m obtained for A. farris at 90% r.h. was similar to that of T. neiswanderi at the same humidity while at 80% r.h. it was very small so that the population doubling time was more than 84 days. The influence of relative humidity on biology of these mites and its practical application as control measure are discussed.  相似文献

Infectivity of dried coliphage T1 has been measured as a function of humidity, temperature, and atmospheric pressure. Loss of infectivity by a factor of 10(4) was caused by water vapor of approximately 40 to 85% saturation when the microorganisms were kept for 3 days at 34 C in evacuated containers. At humidities below 40% and above 90% saturation, no loss of infectivity occurred. At a temperature of 24 C, the infectivity loss was 20-fold. When the virus preparation was kept at 34 C and atmospheric pressure, some loss of infectivity was also found at humidities below 40% and above 90% saturation. Damage to tail proteins or to the phage chromosome is considered as a possible explanation for the inactivation.  相似文献

The effects of temperature and humidity on the emergence patterns of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), were studied at four temperatures (20, 25, 28, and 33 degrees C),three relative humidities (50, 70, and 90%) and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h. Both sexes emerged primarily in the late afternoon to early morning, and the peaks of emergence varied depending on temperature and humidity. Females emerged significantly earlier than males. Incubation at 33 degrees C and 90% RH had a significant effect on the emergence rate, but no significant interaction was found between temperature and humidity. Emergence duration was 25.3 h for both sexes at 90% RH, with emergence duration at 33 degrees C lower than the other treatments. The sex ratios of diamondback moth under different temperature and humidity treatments were approximately 1:1, and there were no significant effects of temperature and humidity or interactions between these two factors.  相似文献

The influence of seed testa color, temperature and seed water content on dormancy release and seed viability loss in the endangered, endemic species Silene diclinis (Lag.) M. Laínz was evaluated. Dormant heterogeneous seeds (black, red and grey colored) were exposed to three different temperatures (5, 20, and 35°C) and two relative humidities (33 and 60%) in order to assay their dormancy release. Longevity behavior was studied for the three colored seeds, storing samples at nine different combinations of temperature (5, 20 and 35°C) and relative humidities (33, 60 and 90%). According to our findings, seed heteromorphism was not related to neither break of dormancy nor seed storage behavior. Silene diclinis seeds present dormancy after collection, and need an after-ripening period to germinate. Temperature and relative humidity are positively correlated with dormancy release and seed ageing. Therefore, both factors must be carefully controlled during seed manipulation in the laboratory for long term seed conservation purposes. When seeds are stored immediately after collection (dormant), if the temperature of storage is above the base temperature for dormancy release found in this work (between 2.7 and 1.6°C), seeds may eventually overcome dormancy. On the other hand if seeds are stored after an after-ripening period, storage at low temperature does not induce secondary dormancy.  相似文献

The short-term relationships of monoterpene emission with temperature and relative humidity were studied in Pinus halepensis L. and Quercus ilex L. seedlings grown in air-conditioned chamber. In P. halepensis terpene emission rate increased with temperature (from 15 to 35 °C) and relative humidity (from 40 - 60 to 65 - 95 %). In Q. ilex, a terpene non-storing species, it increased with temperature only at high relative humidities but not at relative humidities lower than 60 %. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Twenty bisected grains of wheat infested with five pairs of the three commonest British grain-storage mites,Acarus siro L., Glycyphagus destructor (Shrank) andTyrophagus longior (Gervais), were examined every week for 20 weeks. Mite populations, the resulting damage to germ and endosperm, and visible fungal growth were observed at 20°C and relative humidities (r.h.) of 90% and 75%.At 90% r.h.,A. siro populations reached nearly 14000 per test-tube before slowly dropping to 5000. The mites ate the germ before the endosperm, leaving an impenetrable layer of crushed endosperm cells between these regions. TheG. destructor population reached only 800 before declining to 300; these mites ate over 75% of the germ and small amounts of endosperm.Tyrophagus longior populations rose to 2200 mites before crashing at week 12 to the initial population level; these mites ate over 75% of the germ and small amounts of endosperm. At 75% r.h., bothA. siro andT. longior populations were lower than at the higher r.h., peaking at 3000 and 1000 respectively and decreasing to 500 and 600 mites respectively.Glycyphagus destructor did markedly better than at 90% r.h., reaching 1500 before falling to 400. The damage at this humidity was slower to occur but was similar to that at 90% r.h. at the end of 20 weeks. At both humidities visible fungus was always less abundant on infested grain that uninfested grain.  相似文献

Thermoregulatory ability and behavior influence organismal responses to their environment. By measuring thermal preferences, researchers can better understand the effects that temperature tolerances have on ecological and physiological responses to both biotic and abiotic stressors. However, because of funding limitations and confounders, measuring thermoregulation can often be difficult. Here, we provide an effective, affordable (~$50 USD per unit), easy to construct, and validated apparatus for measuring the long-term thermal preferences of animals. In tests, the apparatus spanned temperatures from 9.29 to 33.94 °C, and we provide methods to further increase this range. Additionally, we provide simple methods to non-invasively measure animal and substrate temperatures and to prevent temperature preferences of the focal organisms from being confounded with temperature preferences of its prey and its humidity preferences. To validate the apparatus, we show that it was capable of detecting individual-level consistency and among individual-level variation in the preferred body temperatures of Southern toads (Anaxyrus terrestris) and Cuban tree frogs (Osteopilus septentrionalis) over three-weeks. Nearly every aspect of our design is adaptable to meet the needs of a multitude of study systems, including various terrestrial amphibious, and aquatic organisms. The apparatus and methods described here can be used to quantify behavioral thermal preferences, which can be critical for determining temperature tolerances across species and thus the resiliency of species to current and impending climate change.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Patterns of daily activity of two ectothermic species of the trogid genus Omorgus were studied in the Kalahari of southern Africa in summer. The relationship between time and type of activity, and environmental temperature, relative humidity and light intensity, was investigated.
2. Beetle activity was biphasic, with peaks in activity at sunset and sunrise in both species.
3. Afternoon activity coincided with high temperatures and low humidity and morning activity with minimum daily temperature and maximum humidity.
4. Afternoon activity, which peaked at about 34°C and 25% r.h., consisted predominantly of complex breeding behaviour and dispersal. High temperatures are necessary for these activities.
5. In the morning feeding predominated. At this time temperature was about 27°C and r.h. above 60%. High r.h. is important because it restricts respiratory loss of water, improves food (moist hair and skin keratin) quality and may compensate for faecal water loss.
6. No evidence of competition between the two species was found.  相似文献

The speed of development and the developmental mortality of Tribolium confusum were studied over a series of constant temperatures between 15° and 40° C. at 10, 30, 70 and 90% R.H. using wheatfeed as food.
Eggs did not hatch at 15° or 40° C. at any humidity. At 37.5° C. about 60% of eggs hatched and at all other conditions about 90% hatched. The effect of temperature on the duration of the egg period is shown graphically, the shortest period being at 35° C. Humidity does not affect the egg period.
Larvae failed to develop to pupae at 17.5° C., at 10% R.H. at 20° C, and at 10 and 90% R.H. at 37.5° C. The rate of larval development was affected by both temperature and humidity being quickest at the higher humidities and at about 32.5° C. Larval mortality was less than 16% except at 37.5° C., at 10% R.H. or less, and at 20°C., 90% R.H.
The duration of the pupal period was not affected by humidity and was shortest at 37.5°C. The total developmental period is compared with that of T. castaneum over the range of temperature and humidity conditions in which both species can grow. The optimum for developmental speed and the maximum and the minimum temperatures at which development is possible were all about 2.5°C. lower for T. confusum than for T. castaneum. The developmental periods for the two species were equal at temperatures between 23 and 27°C., depending on humidity. At lower temperatures, T. confusum developed the more quickly and at higher temperatures the more slowly.  相似文献

Temperature is an important determinant affecting the capacity of disease vectors like mosquitoes (Culicidae) to transmit disease agents. Although the impact of temperature on vector-borne disease dynamics has been studied intensively, the actual temperature encountered by the vector in a heterogeneous landscape is rarely taken into account. If disease vectors have temperature preferences and therefore select specific microhabitats, this would substantially influence key life history traits that determine transmission intensity. The thermal preferences of subtropical Aedes aegypti and temperate Ae. japonicus mosquitoes were investigated in a temperature gradient set-up consisting of a Plexiglas box on top of an aluminium plate on two thermal regulators. Blood-fed (one day after feeding) and unfed (non-blood-fed) mosquitoes were released in small (15–20 °C, 20–25 °C, 25–30 °C) and large (15–30 °C, 30–45 °C) temperature gradients to assess their thermal preferences after 15 min. Additionally, the effect of humidity was investigated in a two-choice chamber setup. Both mosquito species avoided higher temperatures, pronouncedly dangerously high temperatures in the 30–45 °C gradient. At lower temperatures, blood-fed mosquitoes preferred the cooler sides of the 20–25 °C and 25–30 °C gradient, which were all below their rearing temperature. In the lowest gradient of 15–20 °C, no preferences were found. The thermal preference of unfed mosquitoes was similar to that of the blood-fed mosquitoes. No humidity preference or effect of humidity on temperature preferences was observed within the tested range (40–90%). The set-up allows for assessing the thermal preference of mosquitoes under controlled conditions. The observed preference of mosquitoes for cooler temperatures would increase their longevity and slow down pathogen development. If similar microhabitat selection is observed in the field, vector borne disease models should be adjusted accordingly.  相似文献

Mortality of the coffee berry borer was studied under controlled laboratory conditions in Tapachula, Mexico. For adult female borers subjected to a range of relative humidities (RH) without food at 25°C, the longest mean survival time (20 days) was obtained at 93.5% RH. Adult borer survival was also studied at a range of temperatures for a fixed relative humidity (93.5% RH); at 20°C mean survival time was 28 days. Fecundity and mortality of borer stages in berries was studied for a range of humidities at 25°C. Maximum fecundity was obtained at 90 and 93.5% RH. Immature stages were ejected from the berry at 84% RH and above, which is interpreted as a form of brood hygiene.  相似文献

Field observations in Greenland as well as arena choice experiments showed that the arctic-alpine seed bug Nysius groenlandicus (Zetterstedt) (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) is markedly xerophilous and thermophilous, preferring temperatures around 30 °C. Some variation in thermo-preference was found among individuals from different localities in Greenland. Individuals from an inland locality (Søndre Strømfjord/Kangerlussuaq) had the highest temperature preference. Exposing individuals to rising temperature showed very high thresholds for excessive activity (ca. 41 °C), heat stupor (ca. 51 °C) and death (ca. 52 °C). All stages initially preferred the lowest humidity obtainable but gradually changed to higher humidities. The youngest nymph stages were most tolerant to desiccation. The observed preferences are interpreted as adaptations to a habitat where a warm and dry microclimate allows this obligatorily univoltine species to complete its life cycle within one year. The paper presents some general statistical approaches to analyses of behavioural responses to environmental gradients.  相似文献

Six strains of Rhizobium , three temperature-tolerant (U1, C13 and A19) and three temperature-sensitive strains (U10, C10 and A4) selected on the basis of previous study were used to screen the synergestic effect of different relative humidities (r.h. 50%, 65% and 90%) and temperatures (28°, 35°, 40° and 45°C) on the survival of rhizobia in inoculant carrier. At a particular temperature all the three r.h.'s were maintained. At a storage temperature of 28° and 35°C, the r.h. had little effect on the population of any of the rhizobial strains tested, but at 40° and 45°C, marked differences were observed and it was concluded that higher r.h. in conjunction with higher temperature resulted in low viable counts. The effect was similar but less obvious with the temperature-tolerant strains. It was found that 50% r.h. at different storage temperatures extended shelf life of rhizobial strains of blackgram, cowpea and arhar crops which were tested in this study in inoculant carrier.  相似文献

Conidia of the aphid pathogen Erynia neoaphidis on detached bean leaves and glass coverslips maintained at 20°C and at humidities from 40 to 100% r.h. lost their infectivity for pea aphids at a rate dependent on the humidity. Infectivity declined most rapidly in inocula kept on leaves at 70% r.h. and persisted longest in those at 40 and 50% r. h. That of inocula on coverslips declined most rapidly at 77% r.h. and persisted longest in those kept at 40% r.h. Even after 21 days a little infectivity was retained by conidia stored at 50% r.h. on leaves and 40% r.h. on coverslips.  相似文献

Effects on development, longevity, fecundity and predation of the predatory phytoseiid mite Typhlodromus mangiferus Zaher and El-Brolossy were studied in the laboratory at different temperatures and relative humidities using four prey mite species: the motile stages of the eriophyid mango bud mite Aceria mangiferae Sayed, the eriophyid leaf coating and webbing mite Cisaberoptus kenyae Keifer, the eriophyid mango rust mite Metaculus mangiferae (Attiah) and nymphs of the tetranychid mango red mite Oligonychus mangiferus (Rahman and Sabra). The increase of different temperatures and decrease of relative humidities from 25°C and 60% to 30°C and 55% and 35°C and 50% shortened development and increased reproduction and prey consumption. The developmental durations were almost similar when the predator was fed on eriophyids compared to that on tetranychid. The maximum reproduction (2.70, 2.08, 1.97 and 1.66 eggs/ ♀ /day) was recorded at the highest temperature and the lowest relative humidity, while the minimum reproduction (1.7, 1.54, 1.53, and 1.06 eggs/ ♀ /day) was noted at the lowest temperature and highest relative humidity with all mango prey species. Life table parameters indicated that feeding of T. mangiferus on A. mangiferae led to the highest reproduction rate (rm = 0.204 and 0.139 females/female/day), while feeding on O. mangiferus gave the lowest reproduction rate (rm = 0.137 and 0.116) at 35°C and 50% relative humidity and 25°C and 60% relative humidity, respectively. T. mangiferus seems to be a voracious predator of both mango eriophyid and tetranychid mites. The adult female daily consumed about 127 A. mangiferae, 97 C. kenyae, 86 M. mangiferae, and 18 O. mangiferus at 35°C and 50% relative humidity, while it devoured only 99.81, 86, 81, and 15 individuals, respectively at 25°C and 60% relative humidity. The present study revealed that each injurious mite is thought to be profitable prey species to T. mangiferus as a facultative predator.  相似文献

Summary The Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Mayr), is a widespread invasive ant species that commonly displaces native ants and other ground-dwelling invertebrates in its introduced range. Previous studies have documented a relationship between the spread of Argentine ants and abiotic conditions (particularly water availability) in invaded areas, suggesting that the invasion success of Argentine ants may be related to specific abiotic factors. This study describes the relative humidity preferences and survival of Argentine ants and a dominant native ant, Iridomyrmex rufoniger sp. group, in the laboratory. In a preference experiment, Argentine ant workers showed a significantly greater propensity than Iridomyrmex to locate themselves in containers with the highest relative humidity. A series of survival trials revealed that the survival of both species was related to the relative humidities within experimental containers. The survival of Argentine ant colonies was reduced in comparison with those of Iridomyrmex sp. after 4 h, however by 24 h both species displayed similar levels of survival in all relative humidity conditions. These findings confirm a relationship between the level of available moisture and the distribution and survival of Argentine ants, and may help to account for the current distribution and invasion success of Argentine ants in Australia.  相似文献

Isolations were made of mould species actively growing on a variety of feeding stuffs stored at fixed humidities between too and 65% for periods of up to 4 years. The factors influencing the species of moulds isolated were: (1) die relative humidity of the atmosphere; (2) the length of the storage period before the isolations were made; (3) the type and origin of die feeding stuffs from which the isolates were obtained.
A critical humidify existed for each species below which the development of mould spores could not take place. At relative humidities (R.H.) between 100 and 90% a large variety of moulds were able to develop. Members of die Mucorales and the Fungi Imperfecti were not isolated below 90% R.H. and, although ***Pemicillium app. flourished between 100 and 85% R.H., they were not isolated below 75% R.H. ***Aspergilhes app., on the other hand, were able to develop under conditions of very restricted moisture supply. Some members of the A. ***glaucus group were able to grow at humidities as low as 65-70%.
In general, the moat commonly occurring moulds on the feeding stuffs used in these trials were small ***ascospored species of the A. ***glaucus group, particularly A. ***repens and A. ruber. It is considered that it is these species that will most frequently cause mould damage to feeding stuffs in commercial stores.  相似文献

The noctural activities of the phenotypic shell colour morphy and age classes (adults and juveniles) of Arianta arbustorum were recorded 1 day week-1 for 4 weeks in several laboratory microclimatic conditions. Six constant temperatures between 3 and 18C and four levels of relative humidities between 34 and 98% were maintained. A light regime of 16 h light: 8 h dark was used. There are highly significant differences in activity at different levels of adaptation temperature and relative humidity. The interaction between these factors is significant. There are no significant differences in nocturnal activity between the two phenotypic shell colours nor between the two age classes, but the interaction between morph and relative humidity is significant. The interaction between age classes and relative humidity is also significant. Yellows are more active than browns at high humidities, but less active at low. They are therefore likely to be behaviourally more responsive than browns in an environment of fluctuating humidities. This result is discussed in relation to the maintenance of the polymorphism.  相似文献
