A significantly higher concentration of testicular spermatozoa was obtained from freshwater Oreochromis mossambicus (9·9×109 spermatozoa ml−1) than seawater O. mossambicus (4·6×109 spermatozoa ml−1). The mean osmolality of the urine of freshwater fish (78·5 mOsmol kg−1) was significantly different from that of seawater fish (304·8 mOsmol kg−1). The mean length of the mid-piece of the spermatozoa together with the tail was more variable in freshwater O. mossambicus (8·80±0·23μm) than in seawater specimens (8·27±0·18 μm). Stripped sperm of freshwater O. mossambicus was highly contaminated by urine which was a good activator of sperm motility in O. mossambicus held in both fresh and sea water. The osmolality for initiation of motility in freshwater O. mossambicus spermatozoa was from 0 to 333 mOsmol kg−1 while for seawater O. mossambicus spermatozoa it was from 0 to 1022 mOsmol kg−1. The optimum osmolality for motility was from 70 to 333 mOsmol kg−1 for freshwater O. mossambicus spermatozoa and from 333 to 645 mOsmol kg−1 for seawater fish. In freshwater O. mossambicus spermatozoa, the presence of 20 mM CaCl2 increased the permissive osmolality of NaCl from 184 to 645 mOsmol kg−1. For seawater O. mossambicus spermatozoa, solutions of NaCl devoid of CaCl2 were unable initiate motility, but the addition of 1·5 to 30 mM CaCl2 to the NaCl solution (0–934 mOsmol kg1) had a full motility initiating effect.  相似文献

Knowledge of how the optimum temperature for growth ( T °opt) varies during ontogeny, and how close it is to the temperatures that induce phenotypic masculinization is fundamental to the understanding of the evolution of thermolabile sex determinism (TSD) in fishes. In blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus , T °opt is 32·6° C at the start of exogenous feeding (10mg fish) and it decreases by c . 1° C each time that the fish body mass increases by an order of magnitude. Temperatures <35° C are not sufficient to induce complete phenotypic masculinization. Based on a multiple-regression model ( r 2=0·938) plotting growth against body mass and water temperature, genotypically female tilapia living at high temperatures during the thermosensitive period (21–28 days) and being reversed into phenotypic males would incur an initial growth disadvantage over fish living at T °opt, but not over those living at slightly colder temperatures (27–29° C). This initial disadvantage would be later compensated for by faster growth because of between-sex growth dimorphism to the detriment of phenotypic females. These arguments suggest that there is no definite pressure against the selection of TSD in blue tilapia and probably other Oreochromis spp.  相似文献

Several trends were found in comparisons of rates of growth and development of larvae of four coral-reef damselfishes ( Chromis atripectoralis, Pomacentrus amboinensis, Premnas biaculeatus, Acanthochromis polyacanthus ), which were reared under constant temperature conditions in the laboratory, and which varied in their early life stage durations (respectively, egg stage durations were 2, 4, 7, 16; larval stage durations were 25, 23, 14, 0). Parameters measured included standard length, muscle area, eye diameter, and selected stages of retinal development, olfactory development, and skeletal ossification. Rates of ossification and olfactory development were inversely related to growth rate (in length and muscle area) among most species. Rates of eye growth and retinal development were also negatively correlated among all species. These results are consistent with the concept of a trade-off between growth and development. We observed a positive relationship between egg stage duration and developmental rate, and a negative correlation between larval stage duration and developmental rate. Acanthochromis developed slower than predicted by the general trends, although retinal development was very rapid. Specific retinal stages correlated with settlement, regardless of ontogenetic rates. Olfactory development was especially rapid in the anemonefish Premnas biaculeatus , which imprints to olfactory cues as an embryo. Skeletal ossification was rapid in species with pelagic larvae, and much slower in the benthic brooder. Literature-derived data on size and age at hatching and settlement from > 40 species of tropical pomacentrids were transformed into growth and developmental rates; correlations of these literature-derived parameters were mostly consistent with our controlled four-species comparison.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, The Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 187−206.  相似文献

Abstract— The changes in phospholipids and gangliosides during ontogenesis of chick retina have been compared with those in brain. Three phases of accumulation of ganglioside NeuNAc in the retina were detected. In contrast, brain NeuNAc rapidly increased during embryonic life until hatching, followed by a slower increase up to the adult stage. The phospholipid changes in retina and in brain occur in a-similar manner to the variations observed for gangliosides, however in retina the changes of phospholipid content are less marked than in brain, during embryonic life. There were marked changes in the retina and brain ganglioside patterns with age. G d 3 and G d 1b decreased rapidly in per cent; correspondingly, G d 1a increased during embryonic life and became the major ganglioside in place of G d 3. There was a similarity between ganglioside patterns of chick retina and brain. Except for some slight variations during embryonic life, the retinal phospholipid pattern did not change noticeably.  相似文献

The interaction of CO2 enrichment and drought on water status and growth of pea plants was investigated. Pisum sativum L. (cv. Alaska) plants were grown from seeds in growth chambers using 350 and 675 μl I1 CO2, a photon flux density of 600 μmol M-2 S-1, a 16 h photoperiod and a temperature regime of 20/14°C. The drought treatment was started at the beginning of branch initiation and lasted for 9 or 11 days. The water status of the plants was monitored daily by measuring total leaf water potential and stomatal conductance. The total leaf water potential of well-watered plants was not affected by the CO2 level. Under draughting conditions total leaf water potential decreased, with a slower decrease under the high CO2 regime, due, at least in part, to reduced stomatal conductance. Upon rewatering, total leaf water potential and stomatal conductance recovered within one day. High CO2 counteracted the reduction in height and, to some extent, leaf area that developed in low CO2 unwatered plants. Additional CO2 had no effect on branch number and did not prevent the complete inhibition of branch development that resulted from drought stress. Removing the drought conditions resulted in a rapid recovery of the internal water status and also a rapid recovery of most, but not all, plant growth parameters.  相似文献

Root morphology and Zn^2+ uptake kinetics of the hyperaccumulating ecotype (HE) and nonhyperaccumulating ecotype (NHE) of Sedum alfredii Hance were investigated using hydroponic methods and the radiotracer flux technique. The results indicate that root length, root surface area, and root volume of NHE decreased significantly with increasing Zn^2+ concentration in growth media, whereas the root growth of HE was not adversely affected, and was even promoted, by 500μmol/L Zn^2+. The concentrations of Zn^2+ in both ecotypes of S. alfredii were positively correlated with root length, root surface area and root volumes, but no such correlation was found for root diameter. The uptake kinetics for ^65Zn^2+ in roots of both ecotypes of S. alfredii were characterized by a rapid linear phase during the first 6 h and a slower linear phase during the subsequent period of investigation. The concentration-dependent uptake kinetics of the two ecotypes of S. alfredii could be characterized by the Michaelis-Menten equation, with the Vmax for ^65Zn^2+ influx being threefold greater in HE compared with NHE, indicating that enhanced absorption into the root was one of the mechanisms involved in Zn hyperaccumulation. A significantly larger Vmax value suggested that there was a higher density of Zn transporters per unit membrane area in HE roots.  相似文献

The radiation resistance of spores of Bacillus subtilis and B. stearothermophilus was determined under anoxic conditions in water vapour and in aqueous solutions of glucose and glycerol at various water activities. In water vapour, resistance of both kinds of spores increased slightly with decreasing water activity ( a w). In glycerol solutions, a phase of rapid increase in resistance with decreasing a w was followed by a slower increase on further reduction of a w. This second phase was almost parallel to the water vapour curve, which, however, showed considerably lower resistance. The uptake of [57Co]B13 (cyanocobalamin) by Euglena gracilis strain Z (ATCC 12716) occurred in 2 distinct phases-an initial rapid phase followed by a slower secondary phase. This secondary phase appeared after the saturation of the binding sites involved in the initial rapid phase and was energy-dependent and completely inhibited by 2,4-dinitrophenot, KCN and sodium azide. the subcellular localization of labeled cyanocobalamin taken up by the cell was mostly contained in the chloroplast fraction. the time course and the saturation kinetics of B12 uptake by purified chloroplast fraction indicated that this fraction and the intact cell had a similar affinity for the vitamin B12. This suggested that the chloroplasts contained the binding sites for vitamin 12 and might regulate the uptake process in the intact cell. the kinetic properties of the overall 12 uptake mechanism suggested that the initial phase represent the binding of vitamin 12 to the available sites on the chloroplast. the secondary phase may represent the de novo synthesis of new binding sites.  相似文献

A reappraisal of oxygen uptake by Sarotherodon mossambicus was undertaken using a continuous flow respirometer. Measurements were obtained over the temperature range 16°C–37°C for fish weighing between 10 g and 150 g. The oxygen uptake ( V O2), breathing frequency ( f R), breath volume ( V S.R), gill ventilation ( V G) and oxygen extraction (%) from the ventilatory current of four groups of Oreochromis niloticus during graded hypoxia were measured under the following acclimation temperatures: 20. 25. 30 and 35°C. The critical oxygen tensions ( P O2), determined from V O2 v. P O2 of inspired water at each experimental temperature were, respectively. 19±1±3±1. 18±0±4±9, 29±7± 4±1 and 30±2± 0.6 mmHg. The f R remained nearly constant during the reductions of O2 at all the temperatures studied. V G increased discretely from normoxic levels until the P O2 was reached, below which it assumed extremely high values (17-fold higher or more). The increases observed in V G resulted, at all the acclimation temperatures, in an elevation in V S.R rather than in f R. The extraction of O2 decreased gradually from normoxia until the P O2 was reached, below which an abrupt reduction of extraction was recorded, except at 35°C when fish showed a gradual reduction in extraction just below the tension of 80 mmHg.  相似文献

The pattern of oocyte development in association with changes of plasma concentrations of vitellogenin (Vtg), 17β‐oestradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) was investigated in maturing female greenback flounder Rhombosolea tapirina over the first part of a reproductive season (February to June). Examination of oocyte size‐frequency distributions showed that the oocyte developmental pattern in R. tapirina is multiple group synchrony, and that reproductively mature fish were present at all sampling times. There were no significant temporal variations in the gonado‐somatic index ( I G), hepato‐somatic index ( I H), or plasma concentrations of Vtg, E2 and T during the sampling period, which indicates that reproductive development is not synchronized within the population. Significant increases in I G, I H and plasma concentrations of Vtg, E2 and T, however, were observed in vitellogenic fish, and in fish undergoing final maturation. A positive relationship was also found between the growth of oocytes and plasma concentrations of Vtg, E2 and T, although the patterns of increase were different for each variable. Plasma concentrations of Vtg and E2 rose steadily across oocyte sizes from 100 to 450 μm, but the rate of increase of plasma E2 was slower than that of Vtg, and both reached a saturated concentration at oocyte sizes of c . 450 μm. In contrast, plasma concentrations of T showed no marked increase until oocytes grew beyond 400 μm.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption of Oreochromis niloticus at different stages of development was studied in relation to salinity, temperature and time of day, using a Warburg apparatus. The oxygen consumption of newly hatched (0–14 h) larvae was 3.40 μl O2 larva−1 h−1, of older yolk sac larvae 10.09 μl O2 larva−1 h−1, and of one-month-old fry 32.99 μl O2 larva−1 h−1. The QO2 values showed a decrease with development and growth, ranging from 21.2–26.0 μl O2 mg−1 h−1 in newly hatched larvae to 2.97 μl mg−1 h−1 in one-month-old fry. Changes in oxygen consumption occurred with salinity, the highest being at 17%o. Active larvae (12-24 mm T.L.) showed a doubling of consumption with a 10° C rise in temperature, and their Q10 factor increased from 2.25 to 3.43 with increasing size. Day-old yolk-sac larvae, late yolk-sac larvae (5 days old) and fry of 12 14 mm length all showed a depression in oxygen consumption at midnight followed by a dawn rise.  相似文献

Osteological development of the vertebral column and caudal complex in common dentex was described under extensive larval rearing conditions. Generally, the cartilaginous bones developed prior to the membranous bones. The development of the axial skeleton began with the formation of the hypural 1, the neural arches 2 and 3, as well as the haemal arches 1–8 at 4·8, 4·9 and 5·0 mm total length ( L T, measured in vivo ), respectively. By 7·5 mm L T, all the cartilaginous elements were formed, except for the ventral ribs, which formed between the range of 8·4–18·0 mm L T. The caudal lepidotrichia were the first membranous bones to appear (5·3 mm L T) and attain their full meristic count (7·4 mm L T), followed by the vertebral centra, which formed between 6·6 and 9·7 mm L T. By 25·0 mm L T, all the elements were fully ossified except for the ventral ribs. The developmental direction and order of all the elements were studied with respect to their formation and ossification. The results were discussed in the contexts of ichthyoplankton, ecology and aquaculture. Compared with other Sparidae species, common dentex followed a pattern of relatively rapid rate of osteological development.  相似文献

Aim:  To evaluate the influence of water activity ( a w), temperature and pH on the radial growth and lag phase of Physisporinus vitreus (E-642), a basidiomycete was used in the biotechnological process of bioincising.
Methods and Results:  Radial growth was monitored for 20 days on malt extract agar medium. Five levels of a w (0·998, 0·982, 0·955, 0·928, 0·892) were combined with three incubation temperatures (10, 15, 20°C) and three pH values (4, 5, 6). Data analyses showed a highly significant effect of a w and temperature ( P <  0·0001) and a significant effect of pH ( P <  0·05). The radial growth rate and lag phase of P. vitreus were very sensitive to a w reduction. Although P. vitreus was able to grow at all the selected temperatures and pH values, the lag phase increased with decreasing a w and growth became inhibited at a w = 0·955. Optimal conditions for growth of P. vitreus were a w = 0·998, 20°C and pH 5. The response surface model provided reliable estimates of these growth parameters and confirmed a greater dependence on a w than on temperature or pH under in vitro conditions.
Conclusions:  Low levels of a w can prevent growth of P. vitreus , so wood moisture content should be adjusted accordingly.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  Implementation of these results should contribute towards the optimization and efficiency of bioincising.  相似文献

The duration of the immature stages of Cacopsylla pyri L. was studied under field conditions by artificially infesting pear branches on several dates during the year. The duration of the egg stage decreased from winter to summer, as the season progresses and temperature rises, and slightly increased in September. It ranged from 27.4 to 6.7 days. The same trend was observed in the duration of the first three larval stages (L1−3) which ranged from 18.8 to 10.3 days. For eggs deposited during the period February–August the duration of the last two larval stages (L4−5) ranged from 17.5 to 12.1 days. However, the duration of L4−5 developed from eggs deposited in September and which give rise to winter-form adults were the longest observed. The rate of egg development was related to average ambient temperature with a highly significant linear relationship. This relationship indicates that the egg stage requires a constant number of 158.9 (SD = 5.0) of day-degrees above an average temperature of 2.31°C to complete development. The rate of development both of L1−3 and L4−5 were related to average ambient temperature with curvilinear relationships. These relationships indicate a proportional increase in the developmental rate as temperature rises between 10–22°C. At the higher average temperatures that occurred in the summer experiments (24–27°C) the acceleration of development of L1−3 is reduced and the developmental rate of L4−5 decreases. The developmental rates of L4−5 developed from eggs deposited in September did not follow the established relationship with temperature and they were lower than those in the other periods of the year with the same average temperature.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of two invasive tilapia species, Oreochromis mossambicus and Tilapia mariae, resident in freshwater habitats in north-eastern Australia was investigated. Oreochromis mossambicus exhibited plasticity in some of its life-history characteristics that enhanced its ability to occupy a range of habitats. These included a shallow, weed-choked, freshwater coastal drain that was subject to temperature and dissolved oxygen extremes and water-level fluctuations to cooler, relatively high-altitude impoundments. Adaptations to harsher conditions included a decreased total length (L(T) ) and age (A) at 50% maturity (m50), short somatic growth intervals, early maturation and higher relative fecundities. Potential fecundity in both species was relatively low, but parental care ensured high survival rates of both eggs and larvae. No significant difference in the relative fecundity of T. mariae populations in a large impoundment and a coastal river was found, but there were significant differences in relative fecundities between several of the O. mossambicus populations sampled. Total length (L(T) ) and age at 50% maturity of O. mossambicus populations varied considerably depending on habitat. The L(Tm50) and A(m50) values for male and female O. mossambicus in a large impoundment were considerably greater than for those resident in a small coastal drain. Monthly gonad developmental stages and gonado-somatic indices suggested that in coastal areas, spawning of O. mossambicus and T. mariae occurred throughout most of the year while in cooler, high-altitude impoundments, spawning peaked in the warmer, summer months. The contribution these reproductive characteristics make to the success of both species as colonizers is discussed in the context of future control and management options for tilapia incursions in Australia.  相似文献

Abstract: Enrichment culture of hot spring water samples with pyrite as substrate has provided acidophiles with novel growth characteristics: with these bacteria, the range of conditions under which rapid microbial oxidation of mineral sulphides has been demonstrated has been extended. The upper temperature limit for bacterial mineral oxidation in reactors has been raised. The dissolution of pyrite occurred during growth of Sulfolobus -like thermophiles up to almost 90C. The most efficient extraction of copper from chalcopyrite occurred at 80–85C. With moderate thermophiles, rapid oxidation of minerals was obtained during autotrophic growth in the absence of supplemental CO2: a mixed enrichment culture was active in pyrite dissolution at 45–50C in reactors gassed only with air which contrasted with poor growth by well-studied moderate thermophiles in the absence of enhanced CO2 concentrations.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Heterotrophic (dark) CO2 fixation by Euglena gracilis strain Z varies with phase of batch culture and mode of nutrition. Dark CO2 fixation increased transiently during the growth of cells under photoautotrophic (CO2, light) and heterotrophic (glucose, dark) conditions. Cells grown heterotrophically with acetate or ethanol had no transient increase in fixation. The addition of acetate to a heterotrophically growing culture during the period of increasing dark CO2 fixation resulted in rapid elimination of this fixation. The results suggest that dark CO2 fixation in Euglena functions in anaplerotic feeding of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, drained by biosyntheses during growth. Induction of the glyoxylate cycle by acetate may provide an alternate source of tricarboxylic cycle intermediates, obviating the requirement for dark CO2 fixation as a source of the intermediates.  相似文献
