With flow-through respirometry under video tracking, the CO2 release of adult male and female Pardosa lugubris (wolf spider) and Marpissa muscosa (jumping spider) was measured during rest and activity. Activity metabolism was measured in phases in which the animals were spontaneously active and during forced exercise. Standard metabolic rates (VCO2/t) were 1.43 nmol s–1 g–1 in M. muscosa and 1.7–1.8 nmol s–1 g–1 in P. lugubris. Egg production caused higher resting rates in females compared with the males in P. lugubris. Maximum mass-specific CO2 release, the additional amount of CO2 released after activity and the factorial aerobic scope were higher in M. muscosa. Additionally, half-time recovery and the lag between end of activity and maximum CO2 release were lower in the jumping spider. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the well-developed tracheal system in jumping spiders increases the efficiency of the respiratory system in comparison with wolf spiders, which possess similarly developed lungs but only a simple tracheal system that is restricted to the opisthosoma.Communicated by G. To elucidate the basic food requirement of spiders, the important polyphagous predators of rice-plant insect pests, an attempt was made to measure the respiratory energy loss of fasting spiders, Lycosa pseudoannulata. Relationship between fresh (y) and dry (x) weights of spiders inhabiting the bottom layer of the rice-plant community was represented by the following allometric equation:y=0.428x0.872. The carbon dioxide production by previously fed and unfed females under the dark at 29°C 100% R. H. was measured by a titration technique. The relationship between fresh body weight and CO2 production by unfed animals could be represented by the equation M=aWb, M being the CO2 output per individual per day and W the fresh body weight. The constant b, which determines the slope of curve, was 0.808. Respiration of the adult female with 100 mg fresh weight was 1.155±0.250 mg CO2/100 g fresh weight/day or 48.69 mg CO2/g dry weight/day. This value corresponds to 35.81 cal/g fresh weight/day or 150.94 cal/g dry weight/day. Supposing the calorific content of spiders to be 5820 cal/g dry weight, rate of the respiratory energy loss to total energy of the body was estimated to be 2.60%. This rate did not strongly contradict with the loss of fresh body weight before and after the measurement. The metabolic rate showed remarkable fluctuation with changing food supply. The CO2 production of starved individuals decreased to 83.63±16.34% as compared with individuals which were fed before the measurement.

Abstract. Metabolic rates of adult Lophopilio palpinalis (Herbst, 1799) (Arachnida, Opiliones, Phalangioidea) and Paranemastoma quadripunctatum (Perty, 1833) (Arachnida, Opiliones, Troguloidea) are measured during rest and activity. Carbon dioxide release during rest is continuous in both species. Mean values at 20 °C are 4.2 µL min−1 g−1 for the males of P. quadripunctatum, 4.1 µL min−1 g−1 for the males of L. palpinalis and 4.7 µL min−1 g−1 for the females of L. palpinalis, thus being significantly higher in the egg-producing females. In L. palpinalis, respiratory quotient at rest is 0.84. Spontaneous walking activity with speeds of 15–30 cm min−1 raises the metabolic rate by up to three-fold in both species. Lophopilio palpinalis is made to undertake constant running on a treadmill with speeds of 60, 72 and 96 cm min−1. Enforced activity causes the animals to raise their metabolic rates by up to five-fold above resting rates. Animals reach a steady state of CO2 release on the treadmill and show a fast t1/2 on-response, indicating aerobic exercise. The minimum cost of locomotion is determined to be 2.5 × 10−3 J cm−1 g−1, thus fitting the predicted values for terrestrial locomotion.

Many behavioural traits are considered to be condition‐dependent, reflecting the differential allocation of resources to fitness‐related traits and maintenance, although the physiological underpinnings of condition dependence are not well understood. In the present study, the hypothesis that condition dependence in male Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer is mediated by a decrease in metabolic rate with declining condition is tested. CO2 production is measured by flow‐through respirometry, with insect condition manipulated through starvation. Crickets starved for 7 days have lower CO2 emission rates than individuals starved for only 24 h. However, carbohydrate reserves are depleted in the first 3 days, suggesting that the initial metabolism is primarily fuelled by carbohydrate, with a shift to lipid stores after 3 days. If the metabolic rate is estimated using respiratory quotients reflecting this shift in fuels, there is no difference in metabolic rate between crickets starved for 24 h and 7 days, suggesting that metabolic rate does not decrease with declining condition. This implies that a decrease in metabolic rate during starvation may not be a general pattern in insects, and emphasizes the need to consider fuel use during metabolic rate estimation in starvation studies.

The growth ofTrichoderma lignorum was studied in relation to the carbon balance of the culture system and the respiratory activity at different growth phases. Conidia, after inoculation into the medium, swelled and germinated rapidly. The growth rate of the hyphae at the exponential phase was 0.46 hr−1 (2.2 hr for mass doubling) at 25 C. The yield efficiency of hyphal biomass-C at the cost of glucose-C was 67%, while those of the waste products-C excreted and of CO2-C evolved were, 6.5% and 26.5%, respectively. The yield efficiency of conidia-C to the decrease of hyphae-C was 34%. The germination, growth rate and carbon balance were not affected by different concentrations of glucose from 10 to 2×103 mg glucose-C/l. Carbon dioxide was needed as the growth factor for the initiation of the germination of conidia, but there was no increase in yield efficiency as a result of CO2 fixation. The respiratory rate of the fungus changed drastically as the growth proceeded. The rate of endogenous respiration of conidia was less than 0.2 mg CO2-C/g conidia-C/hr which increased immediately after inoculation into the medium. The highest respiratory rate of hyphae (100–110 mg CO2-C/g hyphae-C/hr) was obtained throughout the exponential phase. Thereafter, decreasing rapidly, the respiratory rate of submerged hyphae of 1-week-old showed only 1.8 mg CO2-C/g biomass-C/hr, whereas the rate of aerial hyphae forming conidia increased again, but did not exceed 10 mg CO2-C/g biomass-C/hr.

Side-effects of insecticides on two erigonid spider species
The current rearing technique forErigone atra (Blackwall) andOedothorax apicatus (Blackwall) (Araneae, Erigonidae) was improved. To reduce time spent rearing on live fruit flies the spiders were kept on a culture of the Collembola speciesLepidocyrtus lanuginosus (Gmelin) (Entomobryidae). Side-effects on spiders of two pyrethroid insecticides (fenvalerate and lambda-cyhalothrin) and one carbamate insecticide (pirimicarb) were tested. Sensitivity of adults of both sexes and juveniles to insecticides and their influence on the rate of emergence of spiderlings from cocoons were investigated using topical application, spraying or residual contact. LD50 values for adults ranged from 0.49 to 2.52 ng a.i./spider for lambda-cyhalothrin and from 5.75 to 98.20 ng a.i./spider for fenvalerate. Topical application also resulted in up to a week's delay of web-building. A moving laboratory spraying equipment was used to spray spiders with different insecticide dosages and water volumes. Pyrethroids sprayed onto adults in webs had stronger effects than pyrethroids sprayed onto sitting or walking spiders on the soil surface. Residual contamination caused higher mortality of spiders after contact with lambda-cyhalothrin than fenvalerate. In all tests, males were more susceptible to pyrethroids than females; this difference was related to body weight. Mortality rate was higher forE. atra than forO. apicatus. Both pyrethroids were also toxic to spiderlings. Lambda-cyhalothrin inhibited emergence ofE. atra spiderlings from cocoons. Pirimicarb was harmless to both spider species.

The effects of elevated CO2 concentration on the growth and development of the funnel‐web weaving spider Agelena labyrinthica (Clerck) (Araneae: Agelenidae) were studied in climate chambers with low (370 μl l?1) or high (750 μl l?1) CO2 concentration. Seventh‐instar A. labyrinthica cultured under each of these CO2 concentrations were randomly selected to determine nutrient composition (total protein, total amino acid, and free fatty acid) and digestive or detoxification enzymes activity (peroxidase, amylase, and superoxide dismutase) using test kits. When reared under high CO2 concentration, total development of A. labyrinthica was significantly faster. Carapace length and width and body weight did not differ between CO2 concentrations, nor the levels of protein and total amino acids in seventh‐instar A. labyrinthica. However, free fatty acid levels were significantly lower under high CO2 concentration. Specific activities of peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in seventh‐instar A. labyrinthica did not differ between CO2 concentrations. The specific activity of amylase under high CO2 concentration was higher than that of the low CO2 group. The effects of elevated CO2 on A. labyrinthica varied from those on the wandering spider Pardosa astrigera L Koch, as found in an earlier study. Apparently, elevated CO2 has a species‐specific impact on spiders.

Variations in species morphology and life‐history traits strongly correlate with geographic and climatic characteristics. Most studies on morphological variations in animals focus on ectotherms distributed on a large geographic scale across latitudinal and/or altitudinal gradient. However, the morphological variations of spiders living in the same habitats across different seasons have not been reported. In this study, we used the wolf spider, Pardosa astrigera, as a model to determine seasonal differences in adult body size, melanism, fecundity, and egg diameter both in the overwintering and the first generation for 2010 and 2016. The results showed that in 2010, both females and males of the overwintering generation were significantly darker than the first generation. Moreover, the overwintering females were markedly larger and produced more and bigger eggs than the first generation in both 2010 and 2016. Considering the overwintering P. astrigera experiencing low temperature and/or desiccation stress, these results suggest that substantially darker and larger body of the overwintering generation is adaptive to adverse conditions.

Social spiders accept immigrant spiders into their kin-based groups, suggesting that spiders cannot recognise kin and may lose inclusive fitness benefits. A field and two laboratory experiments on Diaea ergandros, a social crab spider, demonstrated that younger and older instar D. ergandros do discriminate siblings, but potential benefits were variable and not equally distributed. First, proportional survival was greater in large groups regardless of the within-group relatedness, so accepting immigrants increases probability of group survival (although relatedness was more important among smaller groups). Second, juvenile D. ergandros ate unrelated spiders instead of siblings when starved, so immigrants might represent a food reserve in times of food shortage. Third, subadult resident, sibling females cannibalised unrelated, immigrant females and their brothers instead of immigrant males when starved, suggesting that subadult female spiders may maximise outbreeding opportunities. These benefits provide selective pressure for groups to accept immigrants, but as benefits are realised differentially, conflict and cooperation will exist within spider groups similar to that shown in other group-living taxa.

Food has an influence on many life history traits related to dormancy in insects. In our previous study with the rice bug Leptocorisa chinensis (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Alydidae), diapausing females transferred to conditions physically favorable for promoting the gonad development required food intake to resume gonad development, whereas males did not. These differences in response to food between males and females lead to two questions: (1) Was diapause in the starved females completed? (2) Were the starved males that resumed gonad development at the same physiological status as fed males? We tested these questions with two physiological indicators: gonad status and respiratory rate. Results indicate that starved females are able to complete diapause, but show depressed respiration relative to well-fed insects in diapause. Similar to females, starved males that resumed postdiapause gonad development also had depressed respiratory rate, and hence physiological status is presumed to be different between starved and fed individuals. In this study, it was also found that the photoperiodic signal is storable, whereas the food signal acts directly. The adaptive significance of regulation of gonad development and respiratory metabolism in relation to phenology of suitable host plant and reproductive strategy is discussed in both sexes.

Studies were made to determine the effect of starvation on the susceptibility of Longidorus elongatus to nematicidal chemicals. In vitro studies, using stylet protraction as a measure of susceptibility, showed that the EC50 for nematodes exposed to oxamyl for 5 min was 6-5 μg cm-3 for starved nematodes and 7-7 μg cm-3 for well-fed specimens. In pot studies aldicarb and oxamyl, applied at half the normal commercial rates, decreased the numbers of starved, but not of well-fed, L. elongatus. In a field study aldicarb, oxamyl and the fungicide quintozene decreased the numbers of starving and well-fed L. elongatus. Oxamyl was more effective than aldicarb and the numbers of L. elongatus were decreased more in plots previously fallowed than in those cropped with a grass/clover mixture. A significant interaction between oxamyl treatment and initial crop was found. Starved L. elongatus appear to be more susceptible to carbamate nematicides than well-fed ones. Quintozene decreased numbers of L. elongatus more, and for a longer period of time, than either of the systemic nematicides. The mode-of-action of the nematicidal chemicals is discussed.

The ultrastructure of symbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium sp., zooxanthellae) in the sea anemone Aiptasia pallida Verrill was examined in well-fed or starved (up to 120 days) anemones maintained under two light levels (5 and 50 μmol · m?2· s?1). Cell size of zooxanthellae was not affected by feeding history; however, both light and feeding history affected the relative cell volume of chloroplasts, lipids, and vacuoles. Stereological analysis of transmission electron micrographs showed that algae in low-light starved anemones had 10 times as much lipid (17.4% of cell volume) as those in well-fed anemones under the same light conditions (1.8%). The lipid content of algae from anemones in high light increased from 15.4% in well-fed anemones to 30.1% in starved anemones. The starch content of zooxanthellae in low-light anemones was law (4.1%) and not affected by feeding history, while the starch content of zooxanthellae in high-light anemones was greater (10.7%), with some differences among groups. Algal photoacclimation to low light included an increase in chloroplast relative volume from 17% (in well-fed high-light anemones) to 33% in well-fed low-light anemones. Starvation of the host resulted in a significant decrease in chloroplast volume in zooxanthellae in anemones at both light levels. Morphometry provides quantitative confirmation of biochemical and physiological data on zooxanthellae, because the changes in zooxanthellae with starvation of the host are consistent with other indicators of nutrient limitation of zooxanthellae of A. pallida held without food for long periods of time.

Photosynthesis and transpiration of excised leaves of Taraxacum officinale L. and a few other species of plants were measured, using an open gas analysis system. The rates of CO2 uptake and transpiration increased in two steps upon illumination of stomata-bearing epidermis of these leaves at a light intensity of 50 mW × cm−2. Abscisic acid inhibited only the second step of gas exchange. Illumination of the astomatous epidermis of hypostomatous leaves caused only the first step of gas exchange. These data indicate that the first and second steps arise from cuticular and stomatal gas exchange, respectively. The rate of the cuticular photosynthesis in a Taraxacum leaf reached saturation at a light intensity of 5 mW × cm−2, and the rates of the stomatal photosynthesis and transpiration reached saturation at a higher intensity of 35 mW × cm−2. The cuticular photosynthesis of a Taraxacum leaf was 18% of the stomatal photosynthesis at 50 mW × cm−2 and 270% at 5 mW × cm−2. The other species of leaves showed the same trend. The importance of cuticular CO2 uptake in leaf photosynthesis, especially under low light intensity was stressed from these data.

It is well known that a predator has the potential to regulate a prey population only if the predator responds to increases in prey density and inflicts greater mortality rates. Predators may cause such density-dependent mortality depending on the nature of the functional and numerical responses. As spiders are usually faced with a shortage of prey, the killing behavior of the spider Nesticodes rufipes at varying densities of Musca domestica was examined here through laboratory functional response experiments where spiders were deprived of food for 5 (well-fed) or 20 days (hungry). An additional laboratory experiment was also carried out to assess handling time of spiders. The number of prey killed by spiders over 24- and 168-h periods of predator–prey interaction was recorded. Logistic regression analyses revealed the type II functional response for both well-fed and hungry spiders. We found that the lower predation of hungry spiders during the first hours of experimentation was offset later by an increase in predation (explained by estimated handling times), resulting in similarity of functional response curves for well-fed and hungry spiders. It was also observed that the higher number of prey killed by well-fed spiders over a 24-h period of spider–prey interaction probably occurred due to their greater weights than hungry spiders. We concluded that hungry spiders may be more voracious than well-fed spiders only over longer time periods, since hungry spiders may spend more time handling their first prey items than well-fed spiders.

We examined the relationship between body size of the riparian spider Nephila clavata and the contribution of allochthonous (aquatic insects) and autochthonous (terrestrial insects) sources to its diet using stable isotope analysis. During the study period from July to September, the body size of the females increased remarkably (about 60-fold) but that of males remained small. The biomass of both aquatic and terrestrial insects trapped on the spider webs increased with spider size, with the biomass of the former ranging between 30 and 70% of that of the terrestrial insects. The average relative contribution of aquatic insects to the diet of the spiders, calculated from δ13C values, was 40–50% in spiders in the early juvenile and juvenile stages, 35% in adult males and 4% in adult females. There was a significant negative relationship between the relative contribution of aquatic insects and body size of the female spiders. We conclude that aquatic insects might be an important seasonal dietary subsidy for small spiders and that these allochthonous subsidies may facilitate the growth of riparian spiders, which may in turn enable the spiders to feed on larger prey.

The photosynthetic and respiratory rates of 5- to 7-year-old aspen stems (Populus tremuloides Michx.) were monitored in the field for 1 year to determine the seasonal patterns. The stem was not capable of net photosynthesis, but the respiratory CO2 loss from the stem was reduced by 0 to 100% depending on the time of year and the level of illumination as a result of bark photosynthesis. The monthly dark respiratory rate ranged from 0.24 mg CO2/dm2· hr in January to a maximum 7.4 mg CO2/dm2· hr in June. Individual measurements ranged from 0.02 mg CO2/dm2· hr in February to 12.3 mg CO2/dm2· hr in June. Gross photosynthesis followed a pattern similar to the dark respiratory rate. The mean monthly rate was highest in June (1.65 mg CO2/dm2· hr) and lowest in December (0.02 mg CO2/dm2· hr). Individual measurements ranged from 0.0 mg CO2/dm2· hr in winter to 5.5 mg CO2/dm2· hr in July.

Length–weight (TL vs WWT) and chelae length–width (ChL vs ChW) relationships were described for juveniles, males and females, and for form I and form II males of Procambarus acutus acutus. The length–weight relationships for juveniles, form I, form II males, and females could be described as: WWT = 5 × 10−3 TL3.09, WWT = 6 × 10−3 TL3.61, WWT = 6 × 10−9 TL3.26, and WWT = 6 × 10−4 TL3.5, respectively. In all forms, growth was allometric (P < 0.05). The ancova test indicated that slopes and intercepts of the length–weight regressions were significantly different between sex and sexual stages. The regressions for chelae length–width relationships for form I and form II males, and females were: ChW = −0.81 + 0.27CL, ChW = −0.33 + 0.25CL, and ChW = −0.82 + 0.32CL, respectively. Although the slope and intercepts of regressions for ChL and ChW were similar for those of form I and form II males, the slopes and intercepts of regressions of females were significantly different from form I and form II males. No statistical difference was observed in mean ChL between form II males and females (P > 0.05), but a significant difference was detected in mean ChL between form I and form II males (P < 0.05) and form I and females (P < 0.05). Form I males had longer ChL than form II males and females. The same trend was observed in mean ChW for form I and form II males, but a significant difference was detected between form II males and females (P < 0.05). In addition, results indicated that chelae lengths and widths increased allometrically with total length (TL) for both sex and sexual stages.

Abstract. Agelena labyrinthica Clerck spiders were raised in the laboratory at three diet levels. Growth, reproduction and the pattern of nutrient extraction of each spider were monitored. The extraction of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids by each spider was analysed on three occasions, covering the immature and mature stages. More nutrients were extracted the less well-fed the spider, and females extracted more nutrients than did males. Nutrients were extracted most completely during early growth and, especially protein, by females in the reproductive phase. Protein was extracted more completely than lipids or carbohydrates. The relative amounts of the three nutrients extracted changed significantly with time, indicating that spiders are able to adjust their detailed feeding behaviour to their immediate needs. Field collections over the season showed that most spiders in the field grew approximately as those on the medium laboratory ration for most of the time.
