The effects of extracts of short-necked clam, Tapes japonica,as feeding stimulants on the puffer, Fugu pardalis, were studiedby applying the constituents of the extracts in starch pellets.As observed elsewhere (Hidaka et al., 1978), the starch pelletcontaining all the constituents found in the clam extracts (Konosuet al., 1965), except homarine and choline, at the same concentrationratios as in the clam tissue was taken up by the fish. Omissiontests on the chemical constituents suggested that the palatabilityof the clam pellet might be largely produced by some amino acidsand betaine: Pellets containing alanine, glycine, proline, serineplus betaine were nearly as effective as those containing allthe extractive compounds except homarine and choline. Mixturesfree of either the above amino acids or betaine tested wereall less effective. The nucleotides and related substances andorganic acids detected in the clam extracts had no appreciableeffect except that a mixture of all of them was weakly acceptedby adding betaine to it. The other amino acids found in theextracts appear to be ineffective.  相似文献

Electrophysiological studies showed that milkweed seed extracts have compounds which are stimulating to the olfactory chemoreceptors of the adult milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus. Ethanol extracts were the most stimulatory. These compounds may function as feeding attractants or stimulants. Sex, starvation, and mating did not affect the olfactory chemoreceptor responses.  相似文献

Due to their importance as not only major constituents in paniculatematter but also the metabolism of nitrogen in marine microorganisms,numerous methods have been employed to measure proteins andfree amino acids. However, two difficulties frequently complicatethese measurements. First, an initial separation of proteinsfrom free amino acids is helpful since most analytical methodsare somewhat sensitive to both compound types. Second, the choiceof detection techniques that minimize response differences betweenvarious proteins or amino acids is desirable since natural samplesof microorganisms consist of mixtures of many proteins and aminoacids. To address these problems, four protein detection techniques(modified Lowry et al., Dorsey et al., Bradford and fluorescamine)and two amino acid detection techniques (fluorescamine and o-phthaldialdehyde)were evaluated. Relative extraction efficiencies for proteinfrom phytoplankton samples were also evaluated with six homogenizationsolutions/protocols (TCA, NaOH, boiling NaOH, Triton X-100,NaOH plus Triton X-100 and distilled water). TCA homogenizationyielded the highest protein recoveries, and sufficient physicalseparations between proteins and free amino acids were obtainedwith TCA concentrations between 0.18 and 0.37 M. Results ofthese studies allowed for development of a method for extracting,separating and analyzing proteins and total free amino acidsfrom a common phytoplankton sample. The procedure involves initialhomogenization in a TCA solution, followed by centrifugationto separate protein and free amino acid fractions. Modification of flower colour in torenia (Torenia fournieriLind.) by reintroduction of the chalcone synthase (CHS) or dihydroflavonol-4-reductasegenes has been reported (Aida et al., 2000.Plant Science153:33–42). The typical modified phenotype among plants withan introduced antisense gene is a uniformly lighter-colouredcorolla. Of the 67 plants in which an antisense CHS gene wasintroduced, only a single line (411-7) showed a wavy patternon the flower lip. In flowers of this plant, the inner partof the corolla lip was pigmented more deeply than the outerpart in a wave-like pattern—a pattern that does not existin normal cultivars. The segregation ratio of the flower colourpatterns of the offspring and Southern blot analysis demonstratedthat one of the two transgene loci detected may cause the wavyphenotype; the other locus is never associated with the wavyphenotype but alone it could produce the typical antisense typepattern. Comparative sequence data for the chloroplast encodedrbc L genehas been obtained for species representing the basal lineagesin the proposed phylogeny of Powellet al. (Annals of Botany77:305–315, 1996), with the aim of testing the delimitationof the family and the validity of the supra-generic taxa proposed,and estimating relationships within the family. Cladistic analysesindicate that EpacridaceaesensuPowellet al. (1996) is not monophyletic.Lebetanthus,a monotypic genus from South America commonly placed withinthe family, mostly near the Tasmanian endemicPrionotes, is shownto be closer toGaultheriaand other members of the ericaceoustribe Andromedeae. The hypothetical phylogeny of Powellet al.(1996) is evaluated in the light of this preliminary analysisof relationships within the family. Summary A new function of amino acid in fish behavior was found. Amino acids induced sexual behavior in male rose bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus). Two types of sexual behavior which were pecking and sperm release were observed. Amino acids are known as feeding stimulants in some fish. The pecking behavior of male fish induced by amino acids is similar to the feeding behavior but it was sexual. Only male bitterling showed pecking and sperm release but the female showed no response to the amino acids. 10 out of 20 amino acids induced sexual behavior and both pecking and sperm release were induced by the same amino acids. These two kinds of behavior changed alternately depending on the light conditions. It is of interest that non-specific material such as some amino acids function like sex pheromone.  相似文献

The feeding acceptability of 40 different plants to Psylliodes chrysocephala L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) was determined using leaf disc consumption tests for the adult, and stem or petiole penetration tests for the larvae. Only plants that contained glucosinolates were accepted as food, but addition of the glucosinolate sinigrin to rejected food plants did not make them acceptable to adults. Of the 34 plants that contained glucosinolates, nine were either totally or mostly rejected. Solvent extracts of the rejected plants applied to oilseed rape inhibited feeding by adults. The feeding of P. chrysocephala within the group of plants tested is influenced by the presence or absence of glucosinolates, which may act as feeding stimulants, and other, unidentified chemicals which act as feeding inhibitors.  相似文献

The detection of threshold concentrations and relative stimulatory effectiveness (RSE) for 19 amino acids were studied by olfactory bulbar electroencephalogram (EEG) in the algivorous rabbitfish. The threshold concentrations for 19 amino acids ranged from 10−10 to 10−5 M. l -Alanine was the most effective amino acid, and the threshold concentration was estimated to be from 10−10 to 10−9M. These results were compared with the olfactory response in herbivorous and carnivorous fishes previously reported. The comparison of RSE for rabbitfish with those for other fishes showed correlation coefficients ranging from r = 0.97 to r = 0.50, but high similarities did not correspond with difference in feeding habits for herbivores and carnivores. The role of amino acids in fish chemosensory behaviour and the olfactory response of the rabbitfish was compared with the gustatory response reported previously. It was found that l -serine was the most potent stimulant in both chemoreceptors, l -proline and l -glutaminic acid were the most potent gustatory stimulants, and l -alanine, l -glutamine, l -arginine and l -lysine were the most potent olfactory stimulants.  相似文献

The feeding response of Lymnaea stagnalis shows robust appetitiveconditioning to a novel chemostim-ulus (amyl acetate), whichis retained for more than 4 days. In scrru-isolated centralnervous system (CNS)-hp preparations taken from conditionedsnails, application of amyl acetate to lip tissue led to theonset of fictive feeding in 5/17 individuals, and excitationof an identified cerebral-buccal feeding intemeuron, CV1a. ina further 8. Control group snails showed no response to amylacetate. Attempts were made to aversively condition L. stagnalis usinga food stimulus (sucrose) as the conditioned stimulus and eitheran electric shock or mechanical stimulus as the unconditionedstimulus. No conditioned response to sucrose (i.e. withdrawal)was seen following training. However, trained snails exhibiteda reduction in responsiveness which was manifest as inhibitionof the feeding response to sucrose and an increase in the timetaken to emerge from the shell following handling. This reducedresponsiveness was seen at 1 hr but was lost by 24 hr aftertraining, and was not observed in control group snails. Semi-isolatedCNS-hp preparations from experimental snails recorded 1-3 hrafter training exhibited either inhibition of fictive feedingor no response following application of sucrose. SYNOPSIS. The evolution of the tetrapod limb is examined fromtwo perspectives: structural and functional. Rosen et al. (1981)argued that lungfishes are the sister group of tetrapods, withlimb characteristics comprising an important subset of theirevidence. A re-analysis of the limb characters advocated byRosen et al. does not support their contention, but insteadsuggests that rhipidistian fishes of the family Osteolepidaeare the closest relatives of the tetrapods. In order to understandthe probable selective pressures leading to evolution of thetetrapod limb, a functional analysis of the fins of antennariidanglerfishes was performed. Antennariids use their limb-likefins to traverse underwater substrates. The analysis revealsa large number of functional and morphological convergencesbetween antennariid fins and tetrapod limbs. It is suggestedthat tetrapod limbs were evolved for underwater transport ratherthan for locomotion on dry land.  相似文献

The "vectorial model" proposed in 1973 by Berglund et al. certainlyconstitutes an important progress in the field of olfactoryquantitative interaction. An alternative model called "U model",based also upon perceived odorous intensity of a mixture asa function of perceived odorous intensity of the components,is here presented. High soil resistance to root penetration (measured as penetrometerresistance, Rs slows down leaf growth and reduces mature leafsize in wheat seedlings {Triticum aestivum L.). Underlying changesin the kinetics of cell partitioning and expansion and in thesize and organization of mature cells were reported in companionpapers (Beemster and Masle, 1996; Beemster et al., 1996). Inthe present study, the relationships between apex growth, primordiuminitiation and expansion were analysed for plants grown at contrastingRs, focusing on a leaf whose whole development proceeded afterthe onset of root impedance (leaf 5). High Rs reduced the rates of apex and leaf development, butdid not appear to have immediate effects on the pattern of developmentof the newly initiated phytomers. During an initial short period,the rate of development of a leaf primordium and associatednode were related to plastochronic age, according to similarrelationships (slopes) at the two Rs. Effects on developmentalpatterns were first detected on phytomer radial expansion duringplastochron 2. The ontogenetic pattern of leaf elongation wasaffected later, during the next few plastochrons preceding leafemergence (‘post-primordial stage’). It is concludedthat a reduction in the number of formative divisions and inthe number of proliferative cells along the intercalary mer-istemreported earlier (Beemster and Masle, 1996; Beemster et al.,1996) is not related to the size of the apical dome at leafinitiation nor to the size and number of meristematic cellsinitially recruited to the leaf primordium, which were all unaffectedby Rs. 为探讨家蚕Bombyx mori人工饲料饲养发育不齐的生理原因,从同一蚕品种中挑选出对人工饲料摄食性不同的个体,用电生理学方法测定了下颚瘤状体味觉感器对4种代表性物质(蔗糖、肌醇、大豆粉提取物和柠檬酸)的电生理反应。结果表明,栓锥感器Ss-Ⅰ对蔗糖等促食物质的反应以及栓锥感器Ss-Ⅱ对大豆粉提取物等阻食物质的反应,均存在明显的个体差异。在临界浓度下,低摄食性个体的放电脉冲频率显著高于高摄食性个体。说明低摄食性蚕的味觉反应比高摄食性蚕敏感。  相似文献

Certainly there might be errors atsome small rate, perhaps 1 in 50 000 or 100 000 bases (Schmutz et al., 2004;Read et al., 2002), but at a large scale thesegenomes are put together correctly, are not they? Well, notalways. We have been looking at the assemblies of large genomes forseveral years now, and for every ‘draft’ genomewe look at, we find hundreds—and sometimes thousands—ofmis-assemblies. Recent evidence from algal physiology and molecular biologyconfirms that photoinhibition is directly related to D1 proteindamage and recovery, and D1 protein damage leads to a decreasein electron transfer or an increase in turnover time of theelectron transfer chain. In this study, the turnover time ofthe electron transfer chain is defined as a function of therelative concentration of D1 protein in reaction centre II andthe photoinhibition processes due to D1 protein degradationare incorporated into a model of photosynthesis, initiated byDubinsky et al. (Plant Cell Physiol., 27, 1335–1349, 1986)and developed by Sakshaug et al. (Limnol. Oceanogr., 34, 198–205,1989). On protected intertidal sand flats, virtually worldwide, nassariidsnails scavenge carrion. Typically, they lie in repose beneaththe sand surface but emerge to feed when chemoreceptors detectcarrion. Distance from the potential food influences whetherthey move towards it and, if they do, whether they obtain ameal before it is consumed by others. This study shows that the rate at which Nassarius festivus movestoward food bait is similar for starved and well-fed individuals.That is, when individuals decide to feed, the rate at whichthey move toward food is always approximately the same. Thisstudy exposes another facet of nassariid nutrition related tothe degree of hunger. Recently fed individuals, i.e., thosewhich have fed for < 14 days, will cease feeding and departpalatable food if crushed conspecifics are added to it. Individualswhich have not fed for > 14 days tend to remain feeding,despite the addition of crushed conspecifics. Another studyhas shown that N. festivus consumes sufficient energy from afed-to-satiation meal to sustain it in repose for 20 days.These experiments clarify the observation. Between 14 to 20days since its last meal, N. festivus will feed when the possibilityarises, despite potentially adverse consequences. That is, hungerovercomes the fear of being consumed at a feeding assemblagebecause, without feeding, the alternative may be death by starvation.Thus, a nassariid makes decisions about whether or not to feed.The fear of predation causes N. festivus to abandon a meal ifthe previous one was obtained within a fortnight but, thereafter,it will risk predation to avoid starvation. A simple model in which one CNS taste neuron integrates inputsfrom multiple peripheral receptors is introduced in order toinvestigate the mechanism of acute intensity taste discriminationin flies. Information theory is applied to evaluate the acuteability of discrimination provided by the model. The presentanalysis is carried out under two statistical conditions concerningthe uncertainty of receptor response. Based on experimentaldata obtained by Smith et al. (1983), we estimate the mutualinformation entropy of the model. The numerical results obtainedhere indicate that the uncertainty observed in a single receptorresponse is dramatically reduced by the central integration.Furthermore, each of the eleven stimulus intensity levels experimentallyapplied by Smith et al., can be discriminated completely byintegrating the responses of the realistic number of receptors(33–212). Such a great improvement of the differentialsensitivity in the model resolves the discrepancy between thelow differential sensitivity of single sugar receptors (Smithet al., 1983) and the high sensitivity obtained in the feedingbehavior (Dethier and Rhoades, 1954; Dethier and Bowdan, 1984)of the blowfly.  相似文献
