Allelopathic inhibition of germination by Florida scrub plants has been demonstrated in the greenhouse and lab, but not in the field. We studied the allelopathic effects of Florida rosemary (Ceratiola ericoides) roots, leaves, and litter leachates on field germination and three-month survival of six Florida scrub species, three habitat generalists (Lechea deckertii, Palafoxia feayi, and Polygonella robusta), and three rosemary scrub specialists (Hypericum cumulicola, Lechea cernua, and Polygonella basiramia). We used AIC and model averaging to evaluate support for a series of non-exclusive hypotheses. Species varied in germination (2.7–24.6%) and survival (39.2–71%) percentages, and in their sensitivity to leachates. Germination of scrub species was most negatively affected by leaf > root > litter leachates, although not all species followed the overall trend. Additional germination suppression by leachate combinations (relative to single leachates) was minimal. Sites did not vary in germination, but seedling survival did differ among sites. This study further documents the negative impact of Florida rosemary leachates on the germination of co-occurring plant species. Allelopathy may be partly responsible for bare sand gaps in Florida rosemary scrub, and therefore be one of the forces structuring Florida rosemary scrub ecosystems.  相似文献

1 Metapopulation models predict that unoccupied, but suitable, patches will exist for species subject to extinction and colonization dynamics. We compared the demographic responses of Hypericum cumulicola , a rare herbaceous species almost entirely restricted to Florida rosemary scrub, when transplanted to occupied or unoccupied patches.
2 Seedlings were transplanted and seeds buried into Florida rosemary scrub patches differing in time since last fire, and in the presence or absence of H. cumulicola. We used a replicated, factorial design to place the transplants and seeds in the field, and monitored their performance for 18 months.
3 Neither time‐since‐fire nor prior H. cumulicola site occupancy affected survival of transplants. Only time‐since‐fire affected growth. Time‐since‐fire, H. cumulicola occupancy, and their interaction affected reproductive effort, but these effects were not consistent between years.
4 Flowering and seed production led to subsequent seedling recruitment near transplants, mainly in recently burned sites. Genetic screening of transplants and seedlings showed that transplants in occupied sites could have crossed with nearby resident plants, but that offspring in sites previously unoccupied were likely to have been parented only by nearby transplants.
5 Seeds buried, and later exhumed, germinated after 1 or 2 years of burial, demonstrating a persistent soil seed bank from which populations could recover after fire. Neither time‐since‐fire nor H. cumulicola occupancy affected seed dormancy or germination.
6 Similar demography in unoccupied and occupied patches suggests that the patchy pattern of site occupancy by H. cumulicola is probably due to limited dispersal and periodic extinction, especially associated with long fire‐free intervals. Conservation measures need to protect unoccupied patches to allow metapopulation dynamics and persistence.  相似文献

Understanding the effect of disturbance and interspecific interactions on population dynamics and availability of suitable habitats for colonization and growth is critical for conservation and management of endangered species. Hypericum cumulicola is a narrowly endemic, small perennial herb virtually restricted to open areas of well-drained white sand in Florida rosemary scrub, a naturally patchy community that burns about every 20–80 years. Over 1 year (September 1994 to September 1995) we evaluated variation in survival, growth and fecundity among 1214 individuals in 14 rosemary scrub patches of different sizes (0.09–1.85 ha) and fire histories (2, 8–10, and >20 years since the last fire). Fire kills aboveground individuals of H. cumulicola, but new individuals were present a year after fire. Recruitment decreased in patches more than a decade post-fire. Survival, annual height growth rate, and fecundity (number of flowers and fruits) were higher in recently burned patches. Scrub patch size did not affect these demographic variables. Survival was positively associated with the presence of conspecifics and negatively related to proximity to the dominant shrub Florida rosemary (Ceratiola ericoides), prior reproductive output, and ground lichen cover. Since H. cumulicola and other herbaceous species in the rosemary scrub depend on sporadic fires to decrease interference of shrubs and ground lichens, its persistence may be threatened by fire suppression. Question: Is tree regeneration in canopy gaps characterized by chance or predictable establishment. Location: Coastal scarp forests, Umzimvubu district, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Methods: Estimation of richness of gap‐filling species across canopy gaps of different size. Data are compared with regeneration under the canopy. Probability of self‐replacement of gap forming species is calculated. Results: Forest area under natural gap phase was 7.8%, caused mostly by windthrow (54%). The abundance and average size of gaps (87.8 m2) suggests that species diversity may be maintained by gap dynamics. However, only four of 53 gap‐filler species displayed gap size specialization and these were pioneer species. An additional 13 species were more common in larger gaps but there was no gradient in composition of gap‐filler species across gap size (p= 0.61). Probabilities of self‐replacement in a gap were low (< 0.3) and common canopy species were equally abundant in gaps and the understorey. Species composition in gaps showed no pattern of variation, i.e. was unpredictable, which suggests absence of a successional sequence within tree‐fall gaps. There was also only a slight increase in species richness in gaps at intermediate levels of disturbance. Conclusions: Coastal scarp forest appears not to comprise tightly co‐evolved, niche‐differentiated tree species. Unpredictable species composition in gaps may be a chance effect of recruitment limitation of species from the species pool. Chance establishment slows competitive exclusion and may maintain tree diversity in these forests. These data suggest that current levels (≤ 3 gaps per ha) of selective tree harvesting may not cause a reduction in species richness in this forest.  相似文献

We studied the root distribution and the effects of leachates from the dominant shrub in rosemary scrub, Florida rosemary (Ceratiola ericoides), on germination of seven subordinate rosemary scrub species. For rosemary scrub specialists, (Eryngium cuneifolium and Hypericum cumulicola), germination was suppressed by the leaf and litter leachates. For species that are not found exclusively in rosemary scrub (Liatris ohlingerae, Polygonella basiramia, Paronychia chartacea, and Palofoxia feayi) litter and leaf leachate did not suppress germination significantly. Species limited to gaps in rosemary scrub (E. cuneifolium, H. cumulicola, and Lechea deckertii) showed reduced germination from rosemary leachates while species not limited to rosemary-free gaps (L. ohlingerae and P. feayi) were not affected by rosemary leachates. Rosemary root abundance was greatest near shrubs, at a shallow depth, and at sites not recently burned. As rosemary scrub patches age, rosemary roots are more likely to interact with herbaceous species in gaps.  相似文献

Habitat-specialist species may be restricted to a narrower range of microhabitats than habitat-generalist species. We addressed this hypothesis by comparing microhabitats of two pairs of congeners that differ in habitat specificity and co-occur in one distinct habitat type, Florida rosemary scrub. We characterized microhabitats of rosemary scrub specialists, Polygonella basiramia and Lechea cernua, their habitat-generalist congeners, Polygonella robusta and Lechea deckertii, and random points in the rosemary scrub habitat. Plants of both habitat specialists occurred in microhabitats with significantly more bare sand than plants of habitat-generalist species and random points. Plants of all four species occurred in microhabitats that were farther from dominant shrubs, Ceratiola and Quercus spp., than random points. Seedlings of both habitat specialists grew larger in bare sand microhabitats, whereas ground lichens and litter did not affect seedling growth of the habitat generalists. As the time since fire increases, bare sand cover decreases, Ceratiola density increases, Quercus density remains constant, and shrubs become taller. Physical characteristics, such as soil temperature, soil carbon, and soil moisture, differ slightly with respect to microhabitat. Our results suggest that P. basiramia and L. cernua are specialized on bare sand microhabitats that characterize their preferred habitat, rosemary scrub. Microhabitat specialization may limit the distribution of these rare species.  相似文献

对阔叶红松林林隙与林下不同层次树种多样性进行比较,探讨林隙大小及发育阶段与树种多样性间的关系.结果表明,林隙与林下树种多样性存在显著差异(P<0.01).与林下相比,林隙更新层树种多样性、丰富度和均匀度增大,生态优势度减小(P<0.01);演替层树种多样性、丰富度和均匀度减小,生态优势度增大(P<0.0001).林隙中不同层次树种多样性随着林隙大小呈现出相反的变化趋势.长白山阔叶红松林林隙演替层树种多样性和丰富度总体上呈单峰形变化,中等大小林隙(100~250 m2)中树种多样性和丰富度较高,生态优势度较小.而更新层树种多样性和均匀度在≥250 m2和<100 m2的林隙中最大,在200~250 m2的林隙中最小;生态优势度在200~250 m2的林隙中达到最大.更新层和演替层树种对林隙面积大小反应不同,有利于更新层幼苗建立的林隙面积并不是演替层幼树发育和成活的最适面积;随林隙年龄的增加,更新层和演替层树种多样性在不同层次上呈互补关系.  相似文献

Florida scrub, a fire‐maintained, xeromorphic shrubland, hosts many rare and declining species, but most scrub habitat has been lost to development and agriculture. Formerly cultivated sites offer an opportunity to restore Florida scrub. In this 23‐year study, we test whether scrub species could be restored to an old field and whether scrub vegetation composition and structure could be reestablished over time. Scrub oaks were planted in a section of an old field in 1992 after the site was cleared and treated with herbicide. Additional oaks and other scrub species were planted in 1993. We determined survival and growth annually of a marked sample of scrub species. We sampled vegetation cover in two height strata annually on 10 permanent line‐intercept transects in the old grove and on 20 transects in adjacent, intact scrub. Initial survival of Quercus geminata exceeded that of Q. chapmanii or Q. myrtifolia. Cover of scrub oaks greater than 0.5 m increased from 1.3% in 1992 to 65.2% in 2010. However, the vegetation structure of large Q. geminata did not resemble that of native scrub. Adaptive management led to cutting large oaks in the fall of 2010, and burning the site in early 2011. Cutting and burning appeared to stimulate sprouting and clonal spread of scrub oaks. Ordination analysis indicated directional change related to increasing scrub oak cover and time since planting but the old field still differed from intact scrub. Vegetation has developed toward scrub composition and structure but exotic grasses persist.  相似文献

Question: To what extent do small‐scale disturbances in the forest canopy, created by natural disturbance agents, affect stand development? Doubts exist as to whether small canopy openings have any real effect on the understory tree recruitment, especially in boreal forests. Location: Conifer and mixed stands in the Gaspesian region in eastern Québec. The main natural disturbance agents are recurring outbreaks of Choristoneura fumiferana (eastern spruce budworm) and winds. Methods: Linear transects in 27 sites were used to describe the gap (< 0.1 ha) regime parameters, including gap fraction, gap size and change in disturbance severity through time. Three stand types were distinguished, based on a gradient of abundance of tree host species for the eastern spruce budworm. The impact of gaps was evaluated on the basis of changes in the number, the period of recruitment, and the composition of tree saplings present within gap areas. Changes were measured along the gap size gradient, and according to the pattern of recent budworm epidemics. Results: The gap fraction is highly variable (18%‐64%) and is on average relatively high (42%). Gap sizes have a positively skewed distribution. In most cases the growth rate among gap filling saplings increased sufficiently to date disturbance events. The composition and the structure of understory trees were affected by gap formation. The number of shade‐intolerant tree species did increase during or following periods of particularly severe canopy disturbances. However, the establishment or survival of shade intolerant species was not restricted to larger gaps or more intensely disturbed periods. Conclusions: In sub‐boreal forests of Eastern Canada, small scale disturbances in the tree canopy influence stand regeneration dynamics, but not to the extent that parameters such as sapling composition and recruitment patterns depend on gap regime characteristics.  相似文献

分析了南亚热带常绿阔叶林不同大小和发育阶段林隙内树种多样性的变化规律.结果表明,在南亚热带常绿阔叶林中,多样性指数在<400m2的林隙中变化不大,但在400~500m2的林隙中达到最大,而在500~600m2的林隙中最小,在>600m2的林隙中又有所增大.树种多样性指数随林隙年龄的变化趋势是中间高两端低,即在20~50年期间的多样性最大,其次是20年以下的,50年以后的多样性相对最小.林隙更新层中树种多样性指数在500~600m2的林隙中达到最大,在>600m2和200~300m2的林隙中最小.林隙更新层树种多样性指数在林隙形成最初的10年内达到最大值,但随着林隙年龄的增加,总体上表现出下降趋势,在30~40年和50~60年左右又分别形成两个相对的峰值.物种丰富度的变化趋势总体上与树种多样性指数相一致.不同大小和发育阶段的林隙通过其生态因子的改变,对不同树种的更新起到了不同的作用,从而使得不同大小和发育阶段的林隙中树种的多样性特征不同.林隙是维持南亚热带常绿阔叶林树种多样性的一个重要机制.  相似文献

We used hand-pollination experiments to test the mating systems of and evaluate limits to seed production in two federally listed endangered plants endemic to the Lake Wales Ridge in Florida, USA: Dicerandra frutescens Shinners ssp. frutescens Huck and D. christmanii Huck and Judd (Lamiaceae). Both are nonclonal, short-lived perennials found in gaps created by disturbance (e.g., fire, roads) in Florida scrub. We found that both species require pollen and insect visitation to produce seeds. We detected pollinator limitation of seed production in D. christmanii but not D. frutescens ssp. frutescens, which we suggest is a function of time-since-disturbance or gap size rather than intrinsic differences between the two species. Both species are self-compatible. Inbreeding depression reduced seed set by 60% in D. frutescens ssp. frutescens but did not occur in D. christmanii. We conclude that pollinator limitation (in fire-suppressed populations of both species) and inbreeding depression (in D. frutescens ssp. frutescens) have the potential to limit seed production in these seed-dependent, rare species. Appropriate fire management should mitigate both of these risks, by maintaining large populations and conditions attractive to pollinators. Although these two species are very similar in reproductive biology, comparisons with other Florida scrub endemics and with rare plants in general suggest that potential threats to conservation via reproductive biology are difficult to predict, depending on combinations of ecology, life-history, and phylogenetic history.  相似文献

Question: What are the importance of elevation and fire in maintaining ecotones of Florida scrub assemblages along a gradual topographic gradient? Location: Archbold Biological Station (ABS), 12 km south of Lake Placid, Florida, USA. Methods: Vegetation cover of upland Florida shrublands was quantified using the line‐intercept method along 20 transects traversing similar elevation gradients, stratified by time since fire (TSF). We objectively identified shrubland ecotones using a split moving windows boundary analysis (SMW) with three different window widths. Non‐metric multidimensional scaling ordination was used to determine relationships among plant assemblages defined by SMW. Results: We located up to four ecotones per transect, the majority of which were wide, highly heterogeneous zones. Relative elevation controlled the distribution of plant assemblages in upland Florida shrublands. Ecotones in shrublands > 30 years TSF had relatively low dissimilarity values in SMW, indicating that previously discrete plant assemblages with longer TSF were becoming more similar with time. Conclusions Split Moving Windows (SMW) analysis identified ecotones relatively well although patches generated by oak clonal growth were sometimes identified as ecotones. Fire suppression caused ecotones to become more diffuse, suggesting that without fire at least every 30 years, discrete plant assemblages within upland Florida shrublands will be more continuous.  相似文献

Questions: Are calorimeters and pyrometers accurate and reliable for describing fire parameters in large‐scale ecological projects, and can data from them predict data derived from thermocouples? Do mechanical pre‐treatments in Florida scrub areas alter fire properties? Location: Lake Wales Ridge, Florida, USA. Methods: We deployed thermocouples attached to digital dataloggers, copper and lacquer paint pyrometers and aluminium can calorimeters filled with water in four areas of undisturbed Florida scrub and sandhill vegetation and in adjoining areas pre‐treated with logging, subcanopy felling or mowing. Individual dataloggers were positioned in areas spanning a range of vegetation structure; three calorimeters and three pyrometers were placed with each thermocouple. We also deployed individual calorimeter‐pyrometer pairs. Sites were burned, after which we compared methods for characterizing fire, particularly the ability of pyrometers and calorimeters to predict values derived from thermocouples. Results: Pyrometers best predicted peak 1‐minute mean temperatures and were least successful at estimating maximums. Calorimeters were associated with the number of minutes maximum temperatures exceeded 60 ßC, but were damaged at high residence times and inconsistent at low temperatures. Both pyrometers and calorimeters detected site and treatment differences in fire intensities. These analyses and logistic considerations give pyrometers an edge over calorimeters in situations where dataloggers are impractical. Mechanical pre‐treatments to fire altered fire parameters. Mowing reduced fire temperatures but had different effects on areas burned; this was related to the length of time elapsed between mowing and burning. Subcanopy felling increased both fire coverage and temperatures. Conclusion: Pyrometers outperformed calorimeters as a cheap method for describing relative temperature regimes that are a function of both temperature and residence time. Pyrometers were able to demonstrate how mechanical treatments applied prior to prescribed burning altered fire parameters. Pyrometers are a useful tool for investigating biological responses to fire at multiple scales and in heterogeneous vegetation.  相似文献

Habitat conversion and fire suppression during the last 50 yr have greatly reduced and altered Florida scrub vegetation, resulting in threats to the persistence of its unique flora. As part of a larger conservation project, we investigated patterns of isozyme variation in three rare perennial scrub plants with overlapping ranges endemic to Florida rosemary scrub on the Lake Wales Ridge. All three species have low levels of genetic variation, comparable to or lower than those generally reported for rare plants with restricted geographic ranges. Liatris ohlingerae has more than twice the expected heterozygosity of the other two species, with little population differentiation. In contrast, Hypericum cumulicola has highly differentiated populations with little apparent interpopulation gene flow and heterozygote deficiencies indicative of inbreeding. Eryngium cuneifolium, the species with the narrowest range and fewest populations, has intermediate values for genetic parameters. Although the three species have narrow and overlapping geographic ranges and similar habitat specificity, we discuss how optimal conservation of each species differs.  相似文献

Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCFs) harbour high levels of biodiversity and large carbon stocks. Their location at high elevations make them especially sensitive to climate change, because a warming climate is enhancing upslope species migration, but human disturbance (especially fire) may in many cases be pushing the treeline downslope. TMCFs are increasingly being affected by fire, and the long‐term effects of fire are still unknown. Here, we present a 28‐year chronosequence to assess the effects of fire and recovery pathways of burned TMCFs, with a detailed analysis of carbon stocks, forest structure and diversity. We assessed rates of change of carbon (C) stock pools, forest structure and tree‐size distribution pathways and tested several hypotheses regarding metabolic scaling theory (MST), C recovery and biodiversity. We found four different C stock recovery pathways depending on the selected C pool and time since last fire, with a recovery of total C stocks but not of aboveground C stocks. In terms of forest structure, there was an increase in the number of small stems in the burned forests up to 5–9 years after fire because of regeneration patterns, but no differences on larger trees between burned and unburned plots in the long term. In support of MST, after fire, forest structure appears to approximate steady‐state size distribution in less than 30 years. However, our results also provide new evidence that the species recovery of TMCF after fire is idiosyncratic and follows multiple pathways. While fire increased species richness, it also enhanced species dissimilarity with geographical distance. This is the first study to report a long‐term chronosequence of recovery pathways to fire suggesting faster recovery rates than previously reported, but at the expense of biodiversity and aboveground C stocks.  相似文献

Abstract. The dioecious shrub Ceratiola ericoides (Florida rosemary) dominates xeric, infrequently burned Florida scrub vegetation, often to the near-exclusion of other woody species. We studied the spatial pattern, age, sex and size structure of four populations in Florida, USA: two coastal scrub populations subject to recurrent local disturbances due to sand movement, and two inland scrub populations in sites periodically burned by stand-replacing fires. The age structure of individual genets was estimated from node counts and used to describe the age structure of the populations. The sex ratio of males to females was not significantly different from 1:1, except within a female-biased coastal population subject to frequent sand movement. Node counts indicated that the mean age for reproductive individuals was 15 - 16 yr for the inland populations and 13 - 16 yr for the coastal populations. In all sites, there was no difference in mean age between males and females. Vegetative reproduction was uncommon except for the least-disturbed coastal population where 72 % of the reproductive individuals originated through layering. Individuals were generally randomly dispersed at the coastal sites, whereas significant aggregation of males and females occurred in the inland sites where the populations were initiated following fire. Seedling recruitment was continuous in the disturbed coastal scrub site, where 35% of the individuals were juveniles. Most juveniles were dispersed from 0.5 to 0.75 m around females. At one of the inland sites, where juveniles comprised 11% of the population, juveniles were clustered at 0.25 to 5.75 m around females. Coastal populations were all-aged, while inland populations were uneven-aged. Recruitment appears to follow periods of disturbance; infrequent fire in the inland populations and continuous sand movement on the coast are factors initiating recruitment.  相似文献

Question: (1) Which factors regulate post‐fire recruitment and spread of the shrub Senecio bracteolatus in Patagonian grasslands? (2) What is the role of the grass Stipa speciosa on S. bracteolatus establishment in the post‐fire succession? Location: Northwest Patagonia, Argentina. Methods: We studied the effect of fire on S. bracteolatus recruitment and density by comparing these variables between burned and unburned grasslands. In burned areas, we compared abiotic characteristics and seedling establishment under the canopy of grasses (S. speciosa) and in gaps (inter‐tussock areas). Post‐fire interactions between S. bracteolatus seedlings and S. speciosa were studied using field and greenhouse experiments. Results: Density of S. bracteolatus was higher in burned than in unburned areas. In burned sites, seedlings were more abundant under tussock grasses, whereas juveniles were more abundant in gaps. Tussocks generated more attenuated micro‐environmental conditions than gaps during stressful summers. Gaps were more abundant in burned sites, while “under tussock” microsites were more frequent in unburned sites. In burned areas, tussocks allowed higher establishment of seedlings (facilitation), but gaps allowed more seedling growth and higher persistence of juveniles. Conclusions: Fire promoted S. bracteolatus recruitment in Patagonian grasslands by increasing the availability of favourable gap microsites. Grass protection for shrub seedlings became negative with time, probably due to competition with grasses. Gaps led to better performance and persistence of shrub plants. Six years after fire, higher shrub recruitment and adult density (observed as a trend) in burned grassland provides an opportunity for potential S. bracteolatus invasion.  相似文献

We conducted field experiments manipulating lichens, shrubs, and herbs along a time-since-fire gradient and assessing effects on three endemic herbaceous species of Florida scrub: Eryngium cuneifolium, Hypericum cumulicola, and Polygonella basiramia. Responses included seed germination, survival, biomass, and fecundity. Transplants into recently burned patches generally had higher survival, larger biomass, and greater reproductive output than transplants into long-unburned patches. Open areas and sites near oaks frequently were more favorable than sites near Florida rosemary. Ground lichens did not affect germination but increased mortality rate of seedlings. Neighboring small shrubby and herbaceous species did not affect the performance of these species. Of the three species, naturally occurring E. cuneifolium were farthest from large shrubs, and their microhabitats had the least ground lichens and shrubs. Eryngium cuneifolium and H. cumulicola are capable of forming persistent seed banks and their recruitment after fire depends mostly on these dormant seeds. Polygonella basiramia relies on seed dispersal and immediate seed germination to colonize recently burned patches. Management for these species should involve variable fire regimes to allow all three species to persist along with many other scrub endemics.  相似文献

Questions: How does woody vegetation abundance and diversity differ after natural disturbances causing different levels of mortality? Location: Abies balsamea–Betula papyrifera boreal mixed‐wood stands of southeast Quebec, Canada. Methods: Woody vegetation abundance and diversity were quantified and compared among three disturbance‐caused mortality classes, canopy gap, moderate‐severity disturbances, and catastrophic fire, using redundancy analysis, a constrained linear ordination technique, and diversity indices. Results: Substantial changes in canopy tree species abundance and diversity only occurred after catastrophic fire. Shade‐tolerant, late‐successional conifer species remained dominant after canopy gap and moderate‐severity disturbances, whereas shade‐intolerant, early‐successional colonizers dominated canopy tree regeneration after catastrophic fire. Density and diversity of mid‐tolerant and shade‐intolerant understory tree and shrub species increased as the impact of disturbance increased. Highest species richness estimates were observed after catastrophic fire, with several species establishing exclusively under these conditions. Relative abundance of canopy tree regeneration was most similar after canopy gap and moderate‐severity disturbances. For the sub‐canopy tree and shrub community, relative species abundances were most similar after moderate‐severity disturbances and catastrophic fire. Vegetation responses to moderate‐severity disturbances thus had commonalities with both extremes of the disturbance‐caused mortality gradient, but for different regeneration layers. Conclusions: Current spatio‐temporal parameters of natural disturbances causing varying degrees of mortality promote the development of a complex, multi‐cohort forest condition throughout the landscape. Eryngium cuneifolium Small. (Apiaceae) is a narrowly distributed endemic found only in Ceratiola ericoides (Florida rosemary)-dominated Florida scrub, a periodically burned, shrub-dominated habitat. Multivariate analyses using 22 ∗∗∗microhabitat characteristics indicated significant microhabitat and time-since-fire effects on survival, growth, and fecundity of 1287 individuals over a 4-yr period. Survival increased with distance to the nearest shrub, and plants in larger open patches had greater survival rates. Neighboring shrubs of Ceratiola ericoides and Calamintha ashei were associated with a higher mortality of E. cuneifolium than other neighboring shrub species. Survival was reduced by two-thirds over 4 yr (14% vs. 42%) for E. cuneifolium near C. ericoides. Sand accretion increased growth and fecundity. With greater time since fire, woody shrubs increasingly dominate and open patches shrink, significantly reducing survival, growth, and fecundity of E. cuneifolium. Effects were particularly dramatic between 2 and 7 yr postfire, when annual mortality increased from <10% to >30% (r = 0.74). This herbaceous species is dependent on an open habitat maintained by periodic fire. Belowground competition or allelopathy from shrubs probably restricts E. cuneifolium to recently burned, open patches within the most xeric parts of Florida scrub.  相似文献
