The symbiosis between grasses and endophytic fungi is a common phenomenon and can affect herbivore performance through acquired, chemical plant defence by fungal alkaloids. In laboratory experiments, two species of common grass aphids, Rhopalosiphum padi and Metopolophium dirhodum were tested, in a population experiment (on four plant cultivars) and individually (on one plant cultivar) for the effects of the endophyte, Neotyphodium lolii, that forms symbiotic associations with perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne. In the population experiment that lasted for four aphid generations both aphid species showed decreased population sizes when feeding on each of the four endophyte-infected cultivars. Individuals of R. padi tested individually showed reduced adult life span and fecundity when feeding on infected plants. Individuals of M. dirhodum showed no response in any of the traits measured. This suggests that R. padi individuals are more sensitive to endophyte infection than M. dirhodum individuals. However, all infected grass cultivars reduced population sizes of both aphid species over four generations. Therefore, fungal endophytes can reduce populations of aphid herbivores independent of plant cultivars.  相似文献

Neotyphodium endophytes are assumed to have mutualistic relationship with their grass hosts, mainly resulting from mycotoxin production increasing plant resistance to herbivores by the fungus that subsists on the plant. To study importance of often ignored environmental effects on these associations, we performed a greenhouse experiment to examine the significance of endophyte infection and nutrient availability for bird-cherry aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi) performance on meadow fescue (Lolium pratense). Naturally endophyte-infected (E+), uninfected (E–), or manipulatively endophyte-free (ME–) half-sib families of meadow fescue were grown on two soil nutrient levels. Endophyte infection reduced aphid performance in general. However, to our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate experimentally that herbivore performance decreases on E+ host plants with increasing availability of nutrients in soils. Potential improvement in herbivore performance in high nutrient soils and decreased plant performance in low nutrient soils in ME– plants, compared to E– and E+ plants, suggests that loss of endophyte infection after long coevolutionary relationship may be critical to plant fitness.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of ryegrass infection by the endophytic fungusAcremonium loliiLatch, Christensen and Samuels onMicroctonus hyperodaeLoan, a parasitoid ofListronotus bonariensis(Kuschel). Progression of parasitoids through the larval instar stages was shown to depend on adequate nutrition of the weevil host. Compared to confinement on endophyte-free ryegrass, parasitized weevils held on nonpreferred diets comprising leaf segments from endophyte-infected ryegrass and switchgrass contained parasitoid larvae with retarded development. Similarly, development of parasitoid larvae was retarded in hosts feeding on artificial diet containing diterpenes and alkaloids ofA. loliiorigin. Several diterpenes incorporated into the diet reduced survival of the parasitoid larvae. Attack rate of parasitoids was reduced when the quality of potential host weevils was compromised by confinement on nonpreferredA. lolii-infected ryegrass or without food for 14 days.  相似文献

Predation directly changes the demographics of prey, generally through a numerical decrease. An indirect effect of predators is alteration of movements and spatial patterns of prey. The relationship between these direct and indirect effects can be tested by excluding predators. Home range size of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) decreased and home range overlaps increased in the absence of predators. Home range size and overlaps of meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) did not change despite an increase in vole density. P. leucopus had significantly lower interspecific home range overlaps with M. pennsylvanicus than intraspecific overlaps. The changes in P. leucopus spatial behavior may be an indirect effect of predator exclusion resulting from the increase in M. pennsylvanicus densities.  相似文献

Do scent marks increase predation risk of microtine rodents?   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Reproductive activities, including signalling with scents, may increase the risk of predation. Mammalian predators, like small mustelids, find voles by using odour cues of scent marks. Scent marks are also visible in ultraviolet light, and at least some diurnal raptors are attracted to these markings in the field. We performed a field experiment to find out whether manipulation of scent markings affects the density, survival and mobility of free-living voles, and the activity of mammalian and avian predators. A total of 20 plots (each 1 ha) were randomly divided into two treatments: scent manipulation and control plots. Scent manipulation plots were treated with vole scent-liquid and control plots with water. From each plot 1–2 voles were radio-collared and tracked for three weeks. Predators hunted more often on scent manipulation plots than on control plots leading to lower survival time of voles. Although scent manipulation attracted more avian predators, small mustelids were the main predators of voles. The density or the mobility of voles did not differ significantly between manipulation and control plots. Our results suggest that odour of scent marks may be a larger risk to voles than UV visibility of scent marks.  相似文献

Mutualisms can strongly affect the structure of communities, but their influence on ecosystem processes is not well resolved. Here we show that a plant–microbial mutualism affects the rate of leaf litter decomposition using the widespread interaction between tall fescue grass (Lolium arundinaceum) and the fungal endophyte Neotyphodium coenophialum. In grasses, fungal endophytes live symbiotically in the aboveground tissues, where the fungi gain protection and nutrients from their host and often protect host plants from biotic and abiotic stress. In a field experiment, decomposition rate depended on a complex interaction between the litter source (collected from endophyte-infected or endophyte-free plots), the decomposition microenvironment (endophyte-infected or endophyte-free plots), and the presence of mesoinvertebrates (manipulated by the mesh size of litter bags). Over all treatments, decomposition was slower for endophyte-infected fescue litter than for endophyte-free litter. When mesoinvertebrates were excluded using fine mesh and litter was placed in a microenvironment with the endophyte, the difference between endophyte-infected and endophyte-free litter was strongest. In the presence of mesoinvertebrates, endophyte-infected litter decomposed faster in microenvironments with the endophyte than in microenvironments lacking the endophyte, suggesting that plots differ in the detritivore assemblage. Indeed, the presence of the endophyte in plots shifted the composition of Collembola, with more Hypogastruridae in the presence of the endophyte and more Isotomidae in endophyte-free plots. In a separate outdoor pot experiment, we did not find strong effects of the litter source or the soil microbial/microinvertebrate community on decomposition, which may reflect differences between pot and field conditions or other differences in methodology. Our work is among the first to demonstrate an effect of plant–endophyte mutualisms on ecosystem processes under field conditions.  相似文献

Summary The effects of endophytic fungi (Tribe Balansiae, Clavicipitaceae, Ascomycetes) of grasses on an insect herbivore were studied by feeding paired groups of larvae of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda, Noctuidae, Lepidoptera) leaves from either infected or uninfected individuals. Perennial ryegrass infected by the Lolium endophyte, tall fescue infected by Epichloe typhina, dallisgrass infected by Myriogenospora atramentosa, Texas wintergrass infected by Atkinsonella hypoxylon, and sandbur infected by Balansia obtecta were utilized. The endophytes of ryegrass and fescue previously have been shown to be toxic to mammalian herbivores and to deter feeding of some insect herbivores. In this study we extend the antiherbivore properties of those endophytes to the fall armyworm and demonstrate that fungal endophytes in three other genera have similar antiherbivore properties. For most grasses, survival and weights of fall armyworm larvae fed infected leaves were significantly lower and larval duration was significantly longer compared to larvae fed uninfected leaves. Resistance to herbivores may provide a selective advantage to endophyte-infected grasses in natural populations.  相似文献

Plant-associated micro-organisms such as mycotoxin-producing endophytes commonly have direct negative effects on herbivores. These effects may be carried over to natural enemies of the herbivores, but this has been rarely explored. We examined how feeding on Neotyphodium endophyte infected (E+) and endophyte free (E−) meadow ryegrass (Scherodonus pratensis) affects body mass, population size and mobility of sibling voles (Microtus levis), and whether the diet mediates the vulnerability of voles to least weasel (Mustela nivalis nivalis) predation. Because least weasels are known to be olfactory hunters, we also examined whether they are able to distinguish olfactory cues of voles fed on E+ and E− diets. Neither body mass of voles nor population size differed between diets. However, contrary to our prediction, least weasels preyed more often on voles fed with E− grass than on voles fed with E+ grass. The mobility of voles fed on E+ grass was reduced compared to voles fed on E− grass, but this effect was unrelated to risk of predation. Least weasels appeared unable to distinguish between excrement odours of voles between the two treatments. Our results suggest that consumption of endophytic grass is not directly deleterious to sibling voles. What''s more, consumption of endophytes appears to be advantageous to voles by reducing risk of mammalian predation. Our study is thus the first to demonstrate an effect of plant-associated microbial symbionts on herbivore-predator interactions in vertebrate communities.  相似文献

In small rodent populations with wide-amplitude fluctuations and low-density bottlenecks, the individuals that survive through the bottlenecks may gain major fitness advantages as they will be the founders of the following population expansion. Most hypotheses assume that there exists a physical or behavioural refuge from increased predation risk, and that the survivors are most likely individuals adapted to use such refuges. A recent hypothesis suggests that survival probability is habitat-dependent so that some otherwise sub-optimal habitats provide a spatial refuge from predation risk by the main predator(s). We used spatially replicated long-term (1981–2004) trapping and tracking data of voles (field vole Microtus agrestis and sibling vole M. rossiaemeridionalis) and their main predators (weasel Mustela nivalis and stoat M. erminea) to test predictions based on this hypothesis. We did not find support for the hypothesis. We did not find marked phase-dependent differences in the habitat-level distribution of Microtus voles. Habitat types with low Microtus vole abundance had, on average, comparable predator activity than the main Microtus vole habitats, indicating that there were no habitat-level refuges from predators. There appeared to be no permanent site-level refuges: the spatial distribution of voles varied from one bottleneck to another. This suggests that survival through bottlenecks is at least partly determined by chance events. We propose that in this kind of systems, where relatively short-lived prey are hunted by nomadic or widely ranging predators, short-term anti-predator responses may increase survival prospects as efficiently as more costly anti-predator adaptations, and there is no apparent need to maintain special adaptations to bottleneck situations that occur at infrequent intervals.Co-ordinating editor: J. Persistence of forage grasses is enhanced through the deliberate and selective use of symbiotic fungal endophytes that confer benefits, particularly pest resistance. However, they have also been implicated in reduced plant community diversity as a result of directly or indirectly enhancing competitive ability. A relatively underexplored mechanism by which endophytes might influence pasture plant composition is by altering the biotic or abiotic soil conditions. To examine the soil conditioning effects of forage grass species and their fungal symbionts we tested the responses of three pasture plants, perennial ryegrass, prairie grass, and white clover in nine different soils that had been conditioned by monocultures of endophyte-containing (E+), or endophyte-free (E?), perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, or meadow fescue. Conditioning grass species had little effect on the responses of perennial ryegrass and prairie grass regardless of E+ or E? treatments. In contrast, conditioning species had a strong effect on the response of white clover, resulting in reduced biomass when grown in perennial ryegrass conditioned soils. The presence of endophyte also had significant growth consequences for white clover, but was either positive or negative depending on the conditioning grass species. In comparison to their respective E? treatments, E+ tall and meadow fescue conditioned soils resulted in reduced biomass of white clover, whereas E+ perennial ryegrass conditioned soils resulted in increased biomass of white clover. Among the conditioning strains (AR1, AR37, NEA2, WE) of E+ perennial ryegrass, white clover showed significantly different responses, but all responses were positive in comparison to the E? treatment. By examining the effects of several grass species and endophyte strains, we were able to determine the relative importance of grass species vs. fungal symbiont on soil conditioning. Overall, the conditioning effect of grass species was stronger than the effects associated with endophyte, particularly with regard to the response of white clover. We conclude that both grass species and their fungal endophytes can influence pasture plant community composition through plant–soil feedback.  相似文献

Predator-prey interactions between small mammals and their avian and mammalian predators have attracted much attention. However, large-scale field experiments examining small-mammal antipredatory responses under the risk of predation by mammals are rare. As recently pointed out, the scale of experiments may cause misleading results in studies of decision-making under predation risk. We studied the effect of small mustelid predators on the spacing behaviour of the gray-tailed vole (Microtus canicaudus) and the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) in two separate field enclosure experiments. The experiments were conducted during the breeding season in North America and northern Europe, where small mustelids have been suggested to be important mammalian predators of voles. As in most of the earlier laboratory studies, predation risk was simulated using fresh mustelid faeces and urine. This made it possible to compare the results from experiments at different spatial scales. We did not find any effect of increased predation risk on spacing behaviour (mean and/or maximum distance moved and home range size) or trappability in either vole species. Simulated predation risk did not affect the breeding of females in gray-tailed voles, as has previously been shown in bank voles. The results disagree with most of the studies conducted in laboratory conditions with small mammals. We discuss whether this discrepancy could be caused by differences in the scale of the experiments. Received: 12 April 1999 / Accepted: 7 October 1999  相似文献

Fungal endophytes of grasses are often included in agricultural management and in ecological studies of natural grass populations. In European agriculture and ecological studies, however, grass endophytes are largely ignored. In this study, we determined endophyte infection frequencies of 13 European cultivars and 49 wild tall fescue (Schedonorus phoenix) populations in Northern Europe. We then examined seed production and seed predation of endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E?) tall fescue (in wild grass populations and in a field experiment) and meadow fescue (Schedonorus pratensis; in a field experiment only). Endophytes were detected in only one of the 13 cultivars. In contrast, >90% of wild tall fescue plants harbored endophytes in 45 wild populations but were absent in three inland populations in Estonia. In three wild tall fescue study sites, 17%, 22%, and 56% of the seeds were preyed upon by the cocksfoot moth. Endophyte infection did not affect seed mass of tall fescue in the field experiment. However, seed predation was lower in E+ than E? grasses in the two tall fescue populations with higher predation rates. For meadow fescue, the mean number of seeds from E+ plants was higher than E? plants, but E? and E+ seeds had equal rates of predation by the moth. Our results suggest that the effects of grass endophytes on seed production and cocksfoot moth seed predation vary considerably among grass species, and the effects may depend on herbivore pressure and other environmental conditions.  相似文献

Summary In northern Fennoscandia, microtine rodent populations fluctuate cyclically. The environment of an individual vole can be considered to be predictable when the risks of predation and intra- and interspecific competition change with the cycle, such that both are high during the population highs of voles. The risk of predation is also high during the vole crash. After the crash, the vole population is characterized by low intra- and interspecific competition and low predation pressure. The main predators affecting voles during the crash are the small mustelids, least weasel and stoat. The density of these specialist predators declines drastically during the winter after the vole crash. We studied experimentally the impact of the perceived presence of stoats on the breeding and mating behaviour of voles. In a series of breeding experiments with bank voles,Clethrionomys glareolus, both old and young females suppressed breeding when exposed to the odour of stoats,Mustela erminea. The weights of females decreased in both experimental and control groups, but more among the voles under odour exposition. It seems that females actively avoided copulations under high predation risk and that breeding suppression is mediated by a change in female mating behaviour. There was no change in male behaviour or physical condition between the experimental and control treatments. An alternative mechanism for the observed breeding suppression could be the one caused by decreased feeding in females mediated with low energy intake which does not allow breeding. Regardless of its mechanism, delay of breeding should increase the probability of non-breeding females to survive to the next breeding season. The females surviving the crash should gain a strong selective advantage in a predator-free environment of the subsequent breeding season, which could explain the adaptive function of this antipredatory strategy.  相似文献

Summary Recent studies suggest that diet quality is responsible for differential survivorship of vole cohorts (Boonstra and Boag 1987) and spacing behavior of females (Ims 1987). These phenomena have been related either to a lack of or a deterioration in the quality of the preferred food. To test this hypothesis, we compared foods habits, food quality and health status of meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) from high and low population density phases. In this study, seven plant species represented the main food items used on a regular basis and biomass values of preferred species decreased with browsing pressure. In addition, food quality of the main dietary items changed between phases forcing females to adjust their feeding strategy accordingly. Health of voles changed also opening the way to speculations on competition for high quality food resources and survivorship.  相似文献

Neotyphodium and Epichloë species (Ascomycota: Clavicipitaceae) are fungal symbionts (endophytes) of grasses. Many of these endophytes produce alkaloids that enhance their hosts’ resistance to insects or are toxic to grazing mammals. The goals of eliminating from forage grasses factors such as ergot alkaloids that are responsible for livestock disorders, while retaining pasture sustainability, and of developing resistant turf grasses, require better understanding of how particular alkaloids affect insect herbivores. We used perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne L. (Poaceae) symbiotic with Neotyphodium lolii × Epichloë typhina isolate Lp1 (a natural interspecific hybrid), as well as with genetically modified strains of Lp1 with altered ergot alkaloid profiles, to test effects of ergot alkaloids on feeding, growth, and survival of the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a generalist grass‐feeding caterpillar. Neonates or late instars were provided clippings from glasshouse‐grown plants in choice and rearing trials. Wild‐type endophytic grass showed strong antixenosis and antibiosis, especially to neonates. Plant‐endophyte symbiota from which complex ergot alkaloids (ergovaline and lysergic acid amides such as ergine) or all ergot alkaloids were eliminated by endophyte gene knockout retained significant resistance against neonates. However, this activity was reduced compared to that of wild‐type Lp1, providing the first direct genetic evidence that ergot alkaloids contribute to insect resistance of endophytic grasses. Similarity of larval response to the two mutants suggested that ergovaline and/or ergine account for the somewhat greater potency of wild‐type Lp1 compared to the knockouts, whereas simpler ergot alkaloids contribute little to that added resistance. All of the endophyte strains also produced peramine, which was probably their primary resistance component. This study suggests that ergot alkaloids can be eliminated from an endophyte of perennial ryegrass while retaining significant insect resistance.  相似文献

Effects of population fluctuation of the gray-sided vole(Clethrionomys rufocanus) on the prevalence (infection rates) of the parasiteEchinococcus multilocularis in red fox(Vulpes vulpes) populations was investigated from 1985 to 1992 in eastern Hokkaido (Abashiri, Nemuro, and Kushiro area), Japan. This parasite needs two hosts to complete its life cycle; the gray-sided vole as its intermediate host and the red fox as its final host. We found that: (1) Infection rates in foxes depended on the current-year abundance of voles in all three study areas, particularly in Abashiri. (2) In addition to this direct density-dependence, delayed density-dependence between the infection rate and the prior-year abundance of voles was detected in Nemuro and in Kushiro. (3) The regional differences in density-dependence pattern were related to regional differences in the winter food habits of red foxes: in Abashiri the proportion of voles in the fox’s diet greatly decreases in winter, while the proportion remains high in winter in Nemuro and in Kushiro, probably because of shallower snowpack. These results suggest that infection rates in foxes in Abashiri were less influenced by the prior-year prevalence, since the infection cycle might be interrupted in winter, when voles became less important in fox’s diet. In contrast, the state of the prevalence may carry over from year to year in Nemuro and in Kushiro, because red foxes continue to eat a considerable amount of voles throughout year. The regionally contrasted results for the relationship between infection rate in foxes and vole abundance were parallel to the regional difference in fluctuation pattern of vole populations, which are highly variable in Abashiri area, but less variable in Kushiro-Nemuro area. Drastic change in vole populations appears to affect the host-parasite system.  相似文献

Seedborne systemic endophytic fungi of grasses are thought to be plant mutualists, because they have been shown to improve their host’s resistance against biotic and abiotic stresses. The interactions in plant–endophyte associations vary from mutualistic to parasitic with environmental conditions and the genotypes of interacting species. The possible pros and cons of endophytic fungi are expected to be most evident during the seedling establishment, where host fitness is most directly affected. If this holds true, endophytes may play a focal role in local adaptation of hosts to different environments. We examined if endophyte-infected and uninfected seeds and seedlings of two native grass species, Festuca rubra and F. ovina, differ in seed germination and seedling growth rates under greenhouse conditions. The germination of F. rubra seeds was also studied in the field. This is the first time that the effects of Epichloë endophyte on seedling establishment of fine fescues from natural populations have been experimentally evaluated. Mother plant (seed family) had a marked effect on many response variables in both grass species. Length and mean biomass of tillers of endophyte-infected (E+) F. ovina seedlings were lower, but root:shoot ratios were higher than in endophyte-free (E?) seedlings. In F. rubra, the effects of the endophyte were dependent on the habitat where the seeds were collected. The E+ seeds from river banks germinated faster than E+ seeds from meadows, and E+ seedlings from the river banks produced fewer but taller and heavier tillers than the other seedlings. Our data suggest that the effects of the endophyte infection on the seedling stage of fine fescues are dependent the species of grass, host genetic background and mother plant habitat. The germination strategy and growth form of E+ red fescue seedlings from river banks may be beneficial to surviving in the harsh conditions of that habitat.  相似文献

Summary We studied the reproductive investment of microtine rodents (bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus),Microtus epiroticus andMicrotus agrestis) in western Finland under predation risk from small mustelids. During 1984–1992, the yearly mean litter size of overwintered bank voles was smaller at high least weasel and stoat densities than at low densities (close to 3 versus 4–5). In addition, the annual mean litter size of young bank voles was negatively correlated to the least weasel density. In youngM. agrestis voles, the yearly late summer litter size was negatively associated with the autumn density of small mustelids. In the crash phase of the vole cycle (1989 and 1992), we removed small mustelids (mainly least weasels) from four unfenced areas in late April to late May and studied the reproduction of voles in four removal and comparable control areas (each 2–4 km2). Reduction of small mustelids significantly increased the proportion of pregnant bank vole females, but not that of pregnantMicrotus vole females. We conclude that predation risk apparently reduced reproductive investment of free-living bank vole females; these voles appear to trade their current parental investment against future survival and reproductive prospects. Accordingly, the presence of small mustelids (or their scent) may slow down the reproductive rate of voles. As antipredatory behaviours occurred on a large scale, our results add evidence to the hypothesis that crashes in multiannual vole cycles are driven by small mustelid predators.  相似文献

In prey communities with shared predators, variation in prey vulnerability is a key factor in shaping community dynamics. Conversely, the hunting efficiency of a predator depends on the prey community structure, preferences of the predator and antipredatory behavioural traits of the prey. We studied experimentally, under seminatural field conditions, the preferences of a predator and the antipredatory responses of prey in a system consisting of two Myodes species of voles, the grey-sided vole (M. rufocanus Sund.) and the bank vole (M. glareolus Schreb.), and their specialist predator, the least weasel (Mustela nivalis nivalis L.). To quantify the preference of the weasels, we developed a new modelling framework that can be used for unbalanced data. The two vole species were hypothesised to have different habitat-dependent vulnerabilities. We created two habitats, open and forest, to provide different escape possibilities for the voles. We found a weak general preference of the weasels for the grey-sided voles over the bank voles, and a somewhat stronger preference specifically in open habitats. The weasels clearly preferred male grey-sided voles over females, whereas in bank voles, there was no difference. The activity of voles changed over time, so that voles increased their movements immediately after weasel introduction, but later adjusted their movements to times of lowered predation risk. Females that were more active had an elevated mortality risk, whereas in the case of males, the result was the opposite. We conclude that, in vulnerability to predation, the species- or habitat-specific characteristics of these prey species are playing a minor role compared to sex-specific characteristics.  相似文献
