Effects of methanol extracts of Xanthium strumarium on different cancer cell lines and on the mortality rates of Aedes caspius, Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) were investigated. Among the cell lines tested, the Jurkat cell line was the most sensitive to the methanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction, with reported LC50 values of 50.18 and 48.73 μg/ml respectively. Conversely, methanol extracts were not that toxic to the A549 cell line though the toxicity increased on further purification. The percentage of growth inhibition was dose dependent for the methanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction. The ethyl acetate fraction showed higher toxicity to all cell lines tested when compared to the methanol extract. The results showed that methanol extracts of plant seeds caused 100% mortality of mosquito larvae at a concentration of 1000 μg/ml after 24 h of treatment. The LC50 and LC90 values of X. strumarium were found to be 531.07 and 905.95 μg/ml against Ae. caspius and 502.32 and 867.63 μg/ml against Cx. Pipiens, respectively. From the investigations, it was concluded that the crude extract of X. strumarium showed a weak potential for controlling the larval instars of Ae. caspius and Cx. pipiens. However, on further purification the extract lost the larvicidal activity. The ethyl acetate fraction showed higher toxicity to all cell lines tested when compared to the methanol extract. The ethyl acetate fraction investigated in this study appears to have a weak larvicidal activity but a promising cytotoxic activity. Future studies will include purification and investigation in further detail of the action of X. strumarium on Cancer Cell Lines and mosquitoes.  相似文献

Different organic solvent crude extracts from the leaves of Alangium salviifolium (L.F.) Wangerin, were tested for their feeding deterrence, larvicidal activity and protein concentrations on the fourth instar larvae of Spodoptera litura L. under laboratory conditions. Treatments were given through two different host plant leaves such as brinjal and castor. The bioassay was carried out at different concentrations viz., 0.625, 1.25, 2.5 and 5%. The maximum antifeedant activity in brinjal (52.0%) and castor (29.97%) leaf discs was recorded in ethyl acetate extract as compared with hexane and chloroform extracts at 5% concentration. The result of larvicidal activity revealed that the maximum larval mortality was registered in brinjal leaves (65.81%) and castor with (57.48%) in ethyl acetate extract as compared to hexane and chloroform extracts at 5% concentration. The ethyl acetate extract of A. salviifolium contained alkaloids, diterpenoids, and saponins. The treatment also reduced haemolymph protein concentration after 48 h.  相似文献

Bioefficacy of leaf and root extracts of Aristolochia tagala Cham. at different concentrations was evaluated at room temperature against Spodoptera litura Fab. Effects on feeding, larvicidal and pupicidal activities and larval–pupal duration were studied. Higher antifeedant activity (56.06%), lethal concentration for feeding inhibition (3.69%), larvicidal (40.66%), pupicidal (28%), total mortality (68.66%) and prolonged larval–pupal duration (12.04–13.08 days) were observed in ethyl acetate leaf extract at 5.0% concentration. Dose dependant effect of test extracts was observed. This plant could be used to isolate active principles and to develop a new botanical formulation in pest management programmes.  相似文献

In the past five decades, agricultural pests are controlled by synthetic pesticides which caused ill effects on non-target organisms and environment; also insect pests developed resistance and minor pests became major pests. By keeping this in mind, the present study was selected. Antifeedant and larvicidal activities and growth inhibitory effects of hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate leaf extracts of Fleuggea leucopyrus (Koen.) Willd. against Helicoverpa armigera (Hbn.) were studied. Antifeedant and larvicidal activities were evaluated at 0.5, 1, 2.5 and 5% concentrations at laboratory conditions. Hexane and chloroform extracts at 5% concentration recorded significant antifeedant activity of 82.41 and 74.45%, respectively. Hexane extract recorded the least LC50 and LC90 values of 1.37 and 4.80%, respectively. Hexane extract recorded maximum larvicidal activity of 85.78% with LC50 and LC90 values of 1.69 and 4.94%, respectively. Ethyl acetate extract also had notable amount of larvicidal activity of 81.77% at 5% concentration. Hexane extract at 5 and 2.5% and ethyl acetate extract at 5% concentrations completely prevented the adult emergence of H. armigera. This plant could be further exploited to identify the active principle(s) responsible for the activities and to develop a novel pesticidal formulation. This is the first report of F. leucopyrus is studied for its bioefficacy against H. armigera.  相似文献

Chemical insecticides released into the environment may have adverse biological effects. Therefore, there is a need for ecofriendly insecticides for mosquito control. Xerophytic plant extracts that may provide more ecofriendly active component were evaluated against Culex pipiens 4th instars. Plant extracts prepared using different solvents with a Soxhlet apparatus and different concentrations were tested against Culex pipiens larvae. The effects were observed at 24 h and 72 h intervals and LD50 and LD90 values determined. Chloroform (CHCl3) and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extracts of Althaea ludwigii were the most effective against Cx. pipiens 4th instars, but were highly dependent on extract concentrations and exposure time. Results suggest that A. ludwigii extracts contain bioactive compounds, such as phenols and saponins, that may provide effective Cx. pipiens larval control. However, the extract was found to be toxic to zebrafish larvae, and may be toxic to other aquatic fauna. Further studies to determine the active components and toxicity to other fauna are needed.  相似文献

A preliminary study was conducted to evaluate the effects of nine methanol fungal extracts on fourth instar larvae of Aedes caspius and Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae). None of the extracts tested showed larvicidal activity except for the Paecilomyces lilacinus extract, which showed 100 % mortality against the larvae of Ae caspius after 24 h. The LC50 values of the P. lilacinus extract after 24 h were 190.66 μg/mL against Ae. caspius and 254.25 μg/mL against Cx. pipiens, respectively. After 48 h, meanwhile, the LC50 values were 65.70 and 164.13 μg/mL, respectively. Histological analysis of the midgut of the treated larvae of Ae. caspius and Cx. pipiens revealed changes such as cell destruction, spacing between the cells and disruption of the microvilli, resulting in an appearance of vacuolization in the midgut. This article is the first report of the use of P. lilacinus extract for the control of Ae. caspius and Cx. pipiens larvae and the data obtained may help to provide a better understanding of the mode of action of P. lilacinus as an insecticide against mosquito larvae.  相似文献

The increasing risk of insecticide resistance in mosquito populations has led to the search for new larvicidal agents. Evaluation of bioassay-guided fractionation of the rhizome extract of Alpinia galanga (L.) Willd against Aedes aegypti was assessed. Bioactive fractions were isolated from the rhizome extract of A. galanga using a Soxhlet extractor and chromatography techniques, and subsequently tested against the fourth instar of Culex pipiens. The lethal concentration (LC) was calculated via log-probit analysis. The active fraction was evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) and infrared (IR) analysis. The highest larvicidal potential obtained from bioassays using the Soxhlet apparatus was observed in dichloromethane (DCM) and ethyl acetate (EtoAc) extracts, with LC50 values of 124.49 and 176.30 ppm, respectively, after 24 h of exposure. Subsequently, the DCM extract was subjected to column and thin-layer chromatography. Results of the DCM extraction and the active TLC fraction (F133) of the Rf value 0.5 revealed that LC50 and LC90 values decreased over time. The F133 fraction of A. galanga exhibited zero hatchability (100% mortality) at LC50 (63.416 ppm) and LC25 (31.70 ppm) against Cx. pipiens eggs. GC–MS analysis of the active thin-layer chromatography TLC fraction (F133) revealed the presence of phenol 2 4-bis (1 1-dimethylethyl), which was identified as the major compound. Alpinia galanga extract is a promising candidate for the control of mosquito populations. Further study is required to determine the effect of the extracts on non-target organisms.  相似文献

In order to develop an eco-friendly botanical larvicide alternative to the synthetic larvicides, extracts were prepared from the Cinnamomum burmannii (C.B.) and Syzygium aromaticum (S.A.) with hexane using a sonicator. The extracts were evaluated for larvicidal activity individually and in combination against the Culex pipiens larvae. The LC50 value of C.B. and the S.A. hexane extracts tested individually were 184.2 and 363.7 µg/mL against Cx. pipiens respectively. All the combinations of the extract of C.B. and S.A. showed synergistic factors higher than one. Among the different ratios of extracts, the SA25%: CB75% extract was found to be more toxic than the other combinations (LC50:125.7 µg/mL). Midgut cells treated with S.A. 25%: C.B. 75% extract showed severe morphological alterations such as degradation of microvilli; degeneration of epithelial cells, and peritrophic membrane; loss of nuclei, irregular and damage of microvilli. The extract has a promising larvicidal potential against Cx. pipiens, However, the extract was toxic against HUVEC cells, as evident from MTT and cell morphology. Further investigation is required to assess the toxicity of the extract on aquatic animals.  相似文献

Hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Hydnocarpus pentandra (Flacourtiaceae) seeds were tested for antifeedant, larvicidal, pupal mortality and adult deformations activities against Helicoverpa armigera. Crude extracts were screened at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% concentrations. Bioassay-guided fractionation method was followed to isolate the active fraction from the crude extract. Active fraction was analysed by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and GC-MS. Hexane extract presented the highest antifeedant (87.89%), pupal mortality (41.67%) and adult malformation activities at 2% concentration. Seven different fractions were isolated from hexane extract, among which fraction-2 showed the highest antifeedant (81.43%) activity and recorded the lowest LC50 of 792.07 ppm. The fraction-2 contained two cyclopentenyl carboxylic acids, such as hydnocarpic acid (1) and chaulmoogric acid (2) in the ratio of 2:1. These compounds were major constituents in the active fraction of hexane extract of H. pentandra seeds. Fraction-2 can be used for agricultural pest management.  相似文献

Bioefficacy of hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of the seeds of Ceasalpinea bonduc (L.) Roxb. was studied against third instar larvae of Spodoptera litura at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2.5 and 5.0% concentrations. Significant antifeedant, larvicidal and pupicidal activities and least LC50 values were observed in chloroform extract. The chloroform extract was subjected to fractionation using silica gel column chromatography. Six fractions were obtained; among these, the third fraction showed high antifeedant, larvicidal and pupicidal activities at 1000 ppm concentration. Abnormalities in adults were also observed. All the activities were concentration dependent. C. bonduc could be useful in integrated pest management programme.  相似文献

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to characterise the activity of the extract Francoeria crispa (Forsk.) (Family: Compositae) against the citrus brown mite, Eutetranychus orientalis (Klein). Ethyl acetate was tested for preparing the crude extract of F. crispa. The extract was tested for its toxicity against eggs and adult females of the pest E. orientalis. Ethyl acetate extract of F. crispa affected the behaviour, toxicity and fecundity of females under laboratory conditions. The extract had similar toxic effects on egg stage and adult females of E. orientalis (LC50 = 0.00050 g/ml), respectively. Leaf discs treated with increasing concentrations of ethyl acetate extract of F. crispa showed a high percentage of repellency (97.45%), respectively. Treated females with LC50 concentration of ethyl acetate extract showed a higher remarkable percentage of mortality as well as a reduction in the total number of eggs laid during 7 days. Ten isolated fractions of ethyl acetate crude extract from F. crispa were detected. The results clearly indicate that the isolate number (10) was the most toxic isolate on eggs and females of E. orientalis (LC50 = 0.00014 and 0.000125 g/ml), respectively.  相似文献

A preliminary study was conducted to investigate the effects of the extracts of 112 medicinal plant species, collected from the southern part of Thailand, on Aedes aegypti. Studies on larvicidal properties of plant extracts against the fourth instar larvae revealed that extracts of 14 species showed evidence of larvicidal activity. Eight out of the 14 plant species showed 100% mosquito larvae mortality. The LC50 values were less than 100μg/mL (4.1μg/ mL-89.4μg/mL). Six plant species were comparatively more effective against the fourth instar larvae at very low concentrations. These extracts demonstrated no or very low toxicity to guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata), which was selected to represent most common non-target organism found in habitats ofAe. aegypti, at concentrations active to mosquito larvae. Three medicinal plants with promising larvicidal activity, having LC50 and LC50 values being 4.1 and 16.4 μg/mL for Mammea siamensis, 20.2 and 34.7 μg/mL forAnethum graveolens and 67.4 and 110.3μg/mL forAnnona muricata, respectively, were used to study the impact of the extracts on the life cycle ofAe. aegypti. These plants affected pupal and adult mortality and also affected the reproductive potential of surviving adults by reducing the number of eggs laid and the percentage of egg hatchability. When each larval stage was treated with successive extracts at the LC50 value, the first instar larvae were found to be very susceptible to A. muricata and the second instar larvae were found to be susceptible to A. graveolens, while the third and fourth instar larvae were found to be susceptible to M. siamensis. These extracts delayed larval development and inhibited adult emergence and had no adverse effects on P. reticulata at LC50 and LC50 values, except for the M. siamensis extract at its LC50 value.  相似文献

Control of the widely distributed pest Liriomyza huidobrensis, is complicated due to the protected habit of the leafmining larvae, and their resistance to insecticides. The effects of Melia azedarach, (Meliaceae) fruit extracts against adults and larvae of L. huidobrensis, were investigated. In the laboratory, leaves of Cucurbita, sp. infested with first and third instar larvae were treated with different extract solutions. Larval and pupal survival, as well as wing‐spread of adults, were ssessed. Female adult behaviour towards the extract was also analysed in terms of number of feeding punctures and number of offspring left on treated/untreated leaves. In the field, an infested Vicia faba, crop was sprayed four times at weekly intervals with plant extract, water, and a blank solution. The number of adult leafminers and parasitoids emerging from sampled leaves from each treatment were compared. The laboratory tests showed translaminar action of the extracts, which negatively affected leafminer pupal survival, while body size was not affected. The extracts also deterred feeding by adult females and may also have caused reduction in oviposition rates. All solutions and concentrations tested had similar effects. In the field, extract effects were consistent with those from laboratory trials, number of pupae and pupal survival being lower on treated plants. Percentage parasitism was not affected by plant extract treatment, suggesting a selective activity.  相似文献

The use of nanoparticles for various purposes, including pest control, has become increasingly popular because of their cost and environmental safety. In the present study, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized in an extract of Senna alexandrina Miller leaves with the aim of use against vectors of disease such as Culex pipiens L. (the filarial vector in Saudi Arabia). The nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and spectroscopic techniques. The larvicidal activity of the nanoparticles against Cx. pipiens was evaluated according to the protocol of the World Health Organization. According to the lethal concentration LC50, the result shows differentiation in the sensitivity on mosquitoes. The AuNPs (51.383 ppm) the best one followed by AgNPs (52.525 ppm) while S. alexandrina leaf extract alone (355.25 ppm), the lowest effectiveness. Generally, the Cx. pipiens mosquito larvae proved to be more susceptible to AuNPs and AgNPs than leaf extract alone by about 6.91 and 6.76 times, respectively.  相似文献

This study was carried out to evaluate the antifeedant and larvicidal activities of Hyptis suaveolens Poit. (Lamiaceae) leaves crude extracts and their fractions against four lepidopteran pests namely Helicoverpa armigera (Hbn.), Spodoptera litura (Fab.), Earias vittella (Fab.) and Leucinodes orbonalis (G.). Hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts were tested by leaf disc and fruit disc no-choice methods at 1% and 1,000?ppm concentrations for crude and fractions, respectively. Ethyl acetate extract of H. suaveolens exhibited the maximum antifeedant and insecticidal activity at 1% concentration against all the tested insects. It was subjected to fractionation using silica column chromatography with different combinations of hexane and ethyl acetate used as mobile phase. Among the 15 fractions obtained, fraction 2 showed the maximum antifeedant and insecticidal activity against all tested insects at 1000?ppm concentration. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of fraction 2 showed the presence of terpenoids and alkaloids. H. suaveolens could be considered as a safe and eco-friendly insecticide for lepidopteron pest management.  相似文献

Indiscriminate use of synthetic pesticides to control the pests causes negative effects on non-target organisms. Some of the chemicals under B and C categories are carcinogenic to humans. The present study was aimed to assess the antifeedant, larvicidal and pupicidal activities of Hygrophila schulii (syn. H. auriculata) and Blumea mollis against Helicoverpa armigera. Maximum antifeedant activity of 70.01% was observed in ethyl acetate extract of H. schulii at 5.0% concentration with LC50 value of 2.0%. B. mollis ethyl acetate extract at 5.0% concentration showed antifeedant activity of 35.40% with LC50 value of 8.38%. The data for antifeedant activity showed homogeneity of variances in Levene Statistics and normality in Shapiro–Wilk test. Ethyl acetate extract of H. schulii at 5.0% concentration showed 68.66% larvicidal activity with LC50 value of 2.97%. It also showed 73.33% pupicidal activity and was statistically significant from other treatments. No pupicidal activity was observed in ethyl acetate extract of B. mollis. All concentrations of ethyl acetate extract of H. schulii showed promising biological activities which differed statistically from other treatments. Ethyl acetate extract of H. schulii could be used to develop new botanical formulations to manage agricultural pests.  相似文献

The present study focused on extracting green larvicides from extracts of the combination of Foeniculum vulgare and Matricaria chamomilla using different solvents of increasing polarity in a Soxhlet extractor and evaluating their ovicidal, larvicidal, and cytotoxic activities. The most promising among all tested extracts was hexane extract. The ovicidal activity of the hexane PH2 extract resulted in a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in egg hatchability from 95.00 ± 6.16% to 15 ± 9.04% at doses ranging from 62.5 to 500 µg/mL. The larval mortality with the hexane extract ranged from 13.33 ± 3.3% to 93.33 ± 3.3% at doses ranging from 31.25 to 250 µg/mL, respectively. The LC50 and LC90 values of the larvicidal activity of the hexane extract were estimated to be 148.3 and 242.17 µg/mL, respectively, after 24 h of exposure. Similarly, the LC50 values after 48 and 72 h of exposure were 124.93 and 100.3 µg/mL, respectively, against the third instar of Cx. pipiens. PH2 treatment of larvae resulted in histopathological changes such as degenerated epithelial cells and destruction of microvilli on the epithelial cells. The PH2 extract achieved a dose-dependent decrease in the rate of cell survival. The IC50 value of PH2-treated HUVECs was 192.07 µg/mL after 24 h of incubation. The cells showed changes in cellular and nuclear morphology. In conclusion, the hexane extract of PH2 could be used in mosquito management programs.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out, firstly, to determine the possible toxicity of Carum copticum (Apiaceae) extract against Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae), and, secondly, to study the histopathological alterations in the midgut of Cx. pipiens as a result of treatment with C. copticum extract. Larvicidal and ovicidal activities of C. copticum extract against the larvae of Cx. pipiens was determined according to World health organization (WHO). The inhibition effect of C. copticum was assessed by determining the mortality of the treated larvae and eggs. The histopathological effect of the C. copticum extracts on midgut epithelium of the larvae was examined under both light and transmission electron microscopy. The crude extract of C. copticum exerted 100% mortality for Cx. pipiens after 24 h at 200 μm/ml, and zero hatchability (100% mortality) at 150 μm/ml for Cx. pipiens. The histopathological study showed that larvae treated with C. copticum extract had cytopathological alterations of the midgut epithelium. The study provided information on various effects of C. copticum extract against Cx. pipiens.  相似文献

Plant secondary metabolites represent the most efficient and convenient method to control and overcome environmental pollution and insecticidal resistance. This study explored the mosquitocidal activity of the combined extract of seven plants, (HF7) extracted using a Soxhlet extractor against Culex pipiens under laboratory conditions. Exposure of the 3rd instars of Cx. pipiens to HF7 hexane extract resulted in LC50:114.5 μg/mL and LC90:117.0 μg/mL values after 24 h. The ovicidal activities of hexane extract against Cx. pipiens eggs were 21.6%, 48.3%, and 71.6% at 187.5, 93.7, and 46.88 μg/mL, respectively. HF7-treated larvae showed the formation of irregular blebbing of epithelial cells toward the lumen and sloughing into the gut lumen. HF7 extract resulted in 100% adulticidal mortality at the concentration of 3.7 mg/test tube after 30 min of exposure. The IC50 of HF7 extract was 97.03 µg/ml against larvae, at which nuclear and morphological changes were observed. The spectroscopy spectrum of HF7 hexane extract disclosed the presence of 57 different secondary metabolites, among which the dominant compound was eugenol (32.3%). HF7 hexane extract could serve as a botanical insecticide for controlling Cx. pipiens and potentially other mosquito species.  相似文献

The development of different approaches to use agricultural residues as a source of high value-added products, become a must, especially after the problems emerged due to their accumulation. This contribution demonstrates the potential of agricultural residues, Linuim usitatissium (flax seed) and Nigella sativa (black seed) peels, as raw materials for the production of bioactive products, botanical insecticides, against Cx. pipiens, with deep analysis to their chemical constituents by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the larvicidal efficacies of the three crude extracts (methylene chloride, petroleum ether and methanol 70%) from the two plant waste peels were evaluated for the first time against the late third instar larvae of Cx. pipiens. Results indicated different lethal doses in larvae depending on the efficacy of organic solvent used. For both compounds methanol 70% extracts produced the highest dry yield. The most efficient solvent is petroleum ether in case of both flax and Black seed peels. Petroleum ether extract exhibited the highest toxicity against Cx. pipiens with an LC50 of 69.6383 ppm. The same results for black seed indicated that petroleum ether was the most efficient against Cx. pipiens with an LC50 of 40.7748 ppm. The study revealed for the first time the type of phytochemical constituents presents in peels of flax and black seeds using GC–MS analysis which revealed twenty-eight constituents among extracts of flax and black seed peels ranging from to 58.8711% to 99.99% of the total extracts. GC–MS profiling showed that a five constituents, 9-2-Methyl-Z, Z-3, 13 octadecadienol (terpenoid), 9,17-Octadecadienal, (Z)-, Nonanoic acid, 9-oxo-, methyl ester, 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid Z,Z and Octasiloxane, 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7,9,9,11,11,13,13,15,15-hexadecamethyl- have insecticidal activity beside many other biological activities as recorded from a variety of botanical extracts. While the constituents like Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester and cis-9-Hexadecenal, both of them are larvicidal, cis-Vaccenic acid and 9-Oxononanoic acid showing only an insecticidal activity beside Undecanoic acid the mosquito repellent. The other six constituents Linoelaidic acid, Oleic Acid, Z-2-Octadecen-1-ol, 1-Methoxy-3-hydroxymethylheptane, Cis-11,14–Eicosadieonic acid-methyl ester and Heptasiloxane, 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7,9,9,11,11,13,13-tetradecamethyl- are constituents of other plant extracts which showed as a whole an insecticidal activity.  相似文献
