We collected spiders from tree-bark, foliage and litter habitats in deciduous and conifer dominated stands in NW Alberta (Canada) to define these assemblages and consider their conservation significance. To establish habitat associations, we used Indicator Species Analysis (ISA) together with a species dominance metric (DV′) newly proposed here. Of the 116 species collected, 78 were collected from bark. Results support categorizing 16 species as true bark-dwellers, 16 as facultative bark-dwellers and 46 as accidental bark-dwellers or species of unknown association. Species that were strong indicators of particular microhabitats in analyses restricted to bark habitats lost their indicator value when foliage and ground habitats were also considered, suggesting that bark habitats are critical for specific life-history functions. Clubiona canadensis Emerton 1980, Callobius nomeus (Chamberlin 1919), Pocadicnemis americana Millidge 1976 and Enoplognatha intrepida (Sørensen 1888) were the most common bark-dwelling species but their dominance varied among forest cover-types and trapping techniques. Collecting period, forest cover-type, habitat, and trapping technique were generally important environmental variables influencing composition of bark-dwelling assemblages. Although less important in structuring assemblages, tree status (dead or alive) and decay class were important for particular species. Bark habitats are crucial for boreal forest spider assemblages and must be considered central to maintenance of spider diversity.  相似文献

Central European wet meadows are diminished by abandonment of cultivation measures, drainage, pollution, intensive agriculture and climate change during the last decades. In addition, original wet meadow communities can be threatened by immigrating neophytes. Typical invasive species in wet meadows are the steeplebushes Spiraea tomentosa and Spiraea douglasii, but their impact on the indigenous arthropod fauna is unknown. The present study therefore investigates Spiraea-induced changes in ground- and herb dwelling spiders in Spiraea sites, uncultivated meadows with interspersed Spiraea sp. and mowed meadows without Spiraea sp. using pitfall traps and sweep netting. Light intensity, vegetation height and coverage differed significantly between the Spiraea sites and the mowed meadows. In consequence, the activity density of ground-dwelling spiders was much lower in the Spiraea sites and their habitat preferences differed significantly from the two meadow types. Species preferring forests and forest edges were more abundant in invaded sites whereas specimens preferring open habitats decreased. Although the vegetation height and coverage of mowed meadows and cultivated meadows did not differ remarkably, uncultivated meadows contained less spiders of open dry habitats whereas forest species increased. In contrast, differences between herb dwelling spider assemblages of the three habitat types were not significant. Based on the results of the project, the risk of steeple bush invasion and management methods of wet meadows are discussed.  相似文献

Generalist predators have to deal with prey with sometimes very different morphologies and defensive behaviors. Therefore, such predators are expected to express plasticity in their predation strategy. Here we investigated the predatory behavior of the recluse spider Loxosceles rufipes (Araneae, Sicariidae) when attacking prey with different morphologies and defensive mechanisms. We expected L. rufipes to show different prey capture strategies and variable acceptance towards each prey type. Potential prey species were collected directly from the web or in the surroundings of the web-building site of L. rufipes. We collected and used the following in our experiments: termite workers (Nasutitermes sp.), lepidopteran larvae (Eurema salome), ants (Camponotus sp.) and isopods (Tylidae). We paired these prey with L. rufipes and recorded their behavior in captivity, quantifying acceptance rate, immobilization time and the sequence of behaviors by the predator. The acceptance rate was lower for isopods but not different among other prey. The immobilization time was higher for isopods than for termites and similar for the other pairwise comparisons. The behavioral sequence was similar for all prey except for isopods, which were also bit more often. Our combined results show plasticity in the behavior of L. rufipes and also show it subdues a potentially dangerous prey (ant) and an armored prey (isopod).  相似文献

The silk decorations that adorn the webs of many orb-web spiders are thought to have a signal function, but the evolution of the decorating behaviour remains unresolved. The decoration signal is maintained apparently because it improves foraging efficiency, through either increased encounter rates with prey or reduced damage to the web. Recent investigations suggest that the decorations may originate in a regulation of the activity of the aciniform silk glands, which produce silk for both decorating the web and wrapping prey. This view predicts a link between decorating behaviour and a preference for restraining prey by wrapping with silk, which is evident among species of Argiope spiders. Here I compare the frequency of the wrap attack behaviour in four species of orb-web spiders that occupy the same habitat, but differ in their silk decorating behaviour: two species, Plebs bradleyi and Gea theridioides, build silk decorations, while the other two, Araneus hamiltoni and Backobourkia brounii do not. Spiders were presented with prey items that varied in the ease with which they could be captured, with houseflies being more easily subdued than house crickets. As predicted, the silk decorating species used wrap attacks significantly more often than non-decorating spiders, irrespective of the prey species. These data support the view that both behaviours are evolutionary linked. I propose that silk decorating originated from the evolution of wrap attacking, and that silken web decorations have later evolved into a signal and are now maintained for that function.  相似文献

In animals, it is known that age affects the abilities of the brain. In spiders, we showed that aging affects web characteristics due to behavioral alterations during web building. In this study, we investigated the effects of age on the associations between morphological changes to the spider brain and changes in web characteristics. The orb web spider Zygiella x-notata (Araneae, Araneidae) was used to test these relationships. Experiments were conducted on young (19 ± 2 days after adult molt, N = 13) and old (146 ± 32 days, N = 20) virgin females. The brain volume decreased with age (by 10%). Age also had an impact on the number of anomalies in the capture area generated during web building. The statistical relationships between the volume of the brain and web characteristics showed that there was an effect of age on both. Our results showed that in spiders, aging affects the brain volume and correlates with characteristics (anomalies) of the web. As web building is the result of complex behavioral processes, we suggest that aging affects spider behavior by causing some brain alterations.  相似文献

The plasticity in clonal architecture may enable plants to effectively respond to environmental constraints and to enhance species ecological niche breadth but its role in plant tolerance to water flow is poorly documented. The present study was carried out to determine whether the clonal architecture varies with respect to water flow in 10 species of the genus Potamogeton colonizing habitats differing by flow conditions. For these 10 species, the traits describing clonal architecture were measured on individuals sampled in natural sites and plasticity in clonal architecture was examined in a common garden growth experiment. The clonal growth architecture did not vary significantly in the species which inhabit either standing (P. lucens, P. natans, and P. pusillus) or running water (P. amblyphyllus and P. berchtoldii). However, the species inhabiting both standing as well as running waters (P. crispus, P. nodosus, P. pectinatus, P. perfoliatus, and P. wrightii) showed considerable and significant variation in clonal growth architecture across these habitats. Transplantation experiment revealed that clonal architecture observed between the plants under different conditions is plastic and not due to genetic differentiation. The present study demonstrated that plasticity in the clonal architecture may enable these species to inhabit stressful conditions of flowing water.  相似文献

Shelter and trap-building animals that compete for limited space and/or face costly relocations benefit from being flexible in their construction behavior. Orb spiders are good examples of this and their easily quantifiable two-dimensional webs allow us to analyze the behavioral adaptations and costs in terms of higher error levels or less precision resulting from building webs in sub-optimal conditions. Here I study behavioral flexibility in spatially constrained spiders by analyzing a wide range of web parameters including measures that indicate errors during web-building. I compare the geometry of laboratory webs of two orb spiders, Cyclosa caroli and Eustala illicita, built in differently shaped experimental frames and report two major findings. i) The two species differ in their ability to build webs in constrained spaces. ii) E. illicita adjusted a range of parameters including shape, area utilization and mesh height in response to spatial constraints, but kept other parameters constant, most notably the length of anchor threads and the shape of the auxiliary spiral. I furthermore found that constrained spiders did not make significantly more errors during web-building than when they had amble space available.  相似文献

The brown marmorated stink bug, or Halyomorpha halys, is an invasive pest in North America and Europe that causes severe agricultural damage and nuisance problems for homeowners; and it is originally from China, Taiwan, and the Republic of Korea. While the natural enemy community of H. halys has been evaluated in several agroecosystems, it has not been examined where H. halys overwinters in anthropogenic structures. The aims of the current study were to evaluate 1) whether spider webs commonly found in the home and yard can successfully ensnare H. halys, 2) whether entanglement resulted in consumption by spiders inhabiting the webs, and 3) how frequently H. halys becomes entangled in webs under ambient conditions. To accomplish this, adult H. halys were introduced into webs in and near anthropogenic structures in West Virginia and Maryland, United States, and the behavior of spiders was observed for 5-min intervals at 0, 1, 2, and 24 h after introduction. In addition, a survey of webs was performed to determine the frequency with which spiders naturally capture H. halys inside buildings and in the landscape. Overall, the study found seven spider families in anthropogenic structures. Adult H. halys that were introduced into the webs of Theridiidae, Pholcidae, or Agelenidae had a greater than 50% chance of being ensnared and consumed. Adult H. halys were found naturally most often in webs of Theridiidae. Webs with a funnel or cob web architecture had the greatest probability of ensnaring H. halys, while those with orb structures resulted in the fewest caught. In the wild, 13–20% of spider webs contained dead H. halys. Our results suggest that spiders may be an important contributing factor for mortality of H. halys at overwintering sites, and spiders in or outside homes may help reduce nuisance problems caused by H. halys.  相似文献

Primate vocalizations convey a variety of information to conspecifics. The acoustic traits of these vocalizations are an effective vocal fingerprint to discriminate between sibling species for taxonomic diagnosis. However, the vocal behavior of nocturnal primates has been poorly studied and there are few studies of their vocal repertoires. We compiled a vocal repertoire for the Endangered Sambirano mouse lemur, Microcebus sambiranensis, an unstudied nocturnal primate of northwestern Madagascar, and compared the acoustic properties of one of their call types to those of M. murinus and M. rufus. We recorded vocalizations from radio-collared individuals using handheld recorders over 3 months. We also conducted an acoustic survey to measure the vocal activity of M. sambiranensis in four forest habitat types at the study site. We identified and classified five vocalization types in M. sambiranensis. The vocal repertoires of the three Microcebus species contain very similar call types but have different acoustic properties, with one loud call type, the whistle, having significantly different acoustic properties between species. Our acoustic survey detected more calls of M. sambiranensis in secondary forest, riparian forest, and forest edge habitats, suggesting that individuals may prefer these habitat types over primary forest. Our results suggest interspecific differences in the vocal repertoire of mouse lemurs, and that these differences can be used to investigate habitat preference via acoustic surveys.  相似文献

Using a virtual spider robot, we studied hypotheses about the weaving behaviour of orb spiders. Our model spiders built virtual webs that mimicked perfectly the visual architecture of real webs of the garden cross spider Araneus diadematus. The matching of capture spiral and auxiliary spiral pitch was an apparently emergent property in both types of web. This validated our interpretation of the garden spider''s web-building decision rules, which use strictly local interactions with previously placed threads to generate global architecture.  相似文献

Many organisms use chemicals to deter enemies. Some spiders can modify the composition of their silk to deter predators from climbing onto their webs. The Malaysian golden orb-weaver Nephila antipodiana (Walckenaer) produces silk containing an alkaloid (2-pyrrolidinone) that functions as a defense against ant invasion—ants avoid silk containing this chemical. In the present study, we test the generality of ants’ silk avoidance behavior in the field. We introduced three ant species to the orb webs of Nephila clavipes (Linnaeus) in the tropical rainforest of La Selva, Costa Rica. We found that predatory army ants (Eciton burchellii Westwood) as well as non-predatory leaf-cutting ants (Atta cephalotes Linnaeus and Acromyrmex volcanus Wheeler) avoided adult N. clavipes silk, suggesting that an additional species within genus Nephila may possess ant-deterring silk. Our field assay also suggests that silk avoidance behavior is found in multiple ant species.  相似文献

Species variation in functional traits may reflect diversification relating to convergence and/or divergence depending on environmental pressures and phylogenetic history. We tested trait-environment relationships and their basis in finer-scale evolutionary processes among nine extant Hawaiian species of Scaevola L. (Goodeniaceae), a taxon with a complex history of three independent colonizations by different phylogenetic lineages, parallel ecological specialization, and homoploid hybridization events in Hawai‘i. Using a wild population for each species, we evaluated traits related to plant function (morphology, leaf and wood anatomy, nutrient and carbon isotope composition). Hawaiian Scaevola species were distributed across coastal, dry forest and wet forest environments; multivariate environmental analysis using abiotic and biotic factors further showed that species from distantly related lineages inhabited similar environments. Many traits correlated with environment (based on the multivariate environmental analysis), considering both distantly related species and more closely related species. Scaevola species within shared habitats generally showed trait convergence across distantly related lineages, particularly among wet forest species. Furthermore, trait diversification through divergence was extensive among closely related Scaevola species that radiated into novel environments, especially in plant morphology and traits affecting water relations. Homoploid hybrid-origin species were “intermediate” compared to their ancestral parent species, and possessed trait combinations relevant for their current habitat. The diversity in functional traits reflected strong influences of both ecology and evolutionary history in native Hawaiian Scaevola species, and trait correspondence with environment was due to the combination of multiple processes within the taxon: trait pre-adaptation and filtering, evolutionary convergence, divergence, and hybridization.  相似文献

Integration between ecology and biogeography provides insights into how niche specialization affects the geographical distribution of species. Given that rivers are not effective barriers to dispersal in three parapatric species of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri vanzolinii, S. cassiquiarensis and S. macrodon) inhabiting floodplain forests of Central Amazonia, we tested whether forest structure and tree diversity may explain species differences in niche specialization and spatial segregation. We sampled 6617 trees of 326 species in three habitats (high várzea, low várzea and chavascal) used by three Saimiri species, and estimated tree species richness in each of them. For each tree, we measured variables known to influence habitat use in primates, such as crown area and presence of lianas, epiphytes and hemi-epiphytes. We used ANOVA to compare these variables and performed multivariate analyses (NMDS, ANOSIM and SIMPER) to evaluate dissimilarities in forest structure among each habitat inhabited by the three Saimiri species. We identified differences in the tree species richness, crown area and presence of lianas, epiphytes and hemi-epiphytes between the three habitats for all Saimiri species. NMDS demonstrated that areas of high and low várzeas occupied by S. vanzolinii were clearly separated from the other species. We also found that different plant species contributed to dissimilarity among Saimiri ranges. Our findings support the hypothesis that tree community structure may promote niche specialization and spatial segregation among primates. We discuss how these patterns could have been favored by historical changes in forest flood patterns, the evolutionary history of Saimiri spp., and past competition.  相似文献

In typically anemophilous families, there are species, such as Rhynchospora ciliata (Cyperaceae), in which both wind and insects have been registered as pollen vectors (ambophily). However, the contribution of each vector to pollination of ambophilous species can change under different environmental conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the primary pollination system, abiotic or biotic, of R. ciliata, comparing wet and dry seasons. We tested the following hypotheses: (1) in dry months, wind is the main pollen vector of R. ciliata; (2) in wet months, insects will contribute more to the reproductive success of R. ciliata and compensate for low fruit formation by the abiotic vector. Our hypothesis was not confirmed. We found that higher wind speed can favor pollination by wind in R. ciliata even in wetter months. Because insects were less susceptible to environmental variation, they contributed more in dry months when wind speed was low, thus compensating for lower fruit set by wind. High rainfall and humidity can result in faster settling of pollen grains suspended in the air; however, rainfall does not prevent pollination by wind. Since individuals of R. ciliata are located near the edge of the forest, grouped quite close together, and as the inflorescence is located at the apex of the floral scape, wind can act as pollen vector and the inhibiting effects of rainfall can be minimized. The contribution of each pollen vector is important to the reproductive success of R. ciliata and the effectiveness of wind varies with local environmental conditions.  相似文献

Plants are connected to habitats by functional traits which are filtered by environmental gradients. Since tree species composition in the forest canopy can influence ecosystem processes by changing resource availability, litter accumulation, and soil nutrient content, we hypothesised that non-native invasive trees can establish new environmental filters on the understorey communities. In the hardwood floodplain forests in Northern Italy, the invasive trees Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Prunus serotina Ehrh. are the dominant canopy species. We used trait data assembled from databases and iterative RLQ analysis to identify a parsimonious set of functional traits responding to environmental variables (soil, light availability, disturbance, and stand structure) and the dominant native and invasive canopy species. Then, RLQ and fourth-corner analysis was conducted to investigate the joint structure between macro-environmental variables and species traits and functional groups were identified. The trait composition of the herb-layer was significantly related to the main environmental gradients and the presence of the invaders in the canopy showed significant relationships with several traits. In particular, the presence of P. serotina may mitigate or even erase the effect of disturbances, maintaining a stable forest microclimate and thus favouring ‘true’ forest species, while R. pseudoacacia may slow down forest succession and regeneration by establishing new stable associations with a graminoid-dominated understorey. The impact of the two invasive trees on herb layer composition appears to differ, indicating that different management and control strategies may be needed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the geographical and ecological distribution of Allium scorodoprasum cytotypes in Lithuania. 46 populations were studied: environmental variables were recorded and somatic chromosome numbers of 797 individuals from all populations were assessed. Diploids were found in 13 populations in the northern part of the study area, while triploids occurred in 33 populations from the western part of Lithuania. A. scorodoprasum frequently occurred in river valleys, particularly in the rarely flooded high level floodplains or on lower terraces. Only one population was recorded in Alno-Ulmion forest and three on the Glechometalia hederaceae forest edges, while 42 populations occurred in mesophilous or semidry Arrhenatheretalia elatioris, Mesobromion erecti and Trifolio-Geranietea sanguinei grasslands. No distinct differences in relative frequencies of diploid and triploid cytotypes in different plant communities were found whereas the soil chemical composition between the habitats of both cytotypes differed statistically. These differences however were indicative of the geographical separation of habitats rather than ecological differentiation between the two cytotypes. The results suggest that there were at least two separate roads of colonization of diploid and triploid A. scorodoprasum into Lithuania.  相似文献

Decline and fragmentation of natural habitats, such as old-growth forests, reduces their availability in the landscape. The solution to this problem for many forest-dwelling species, may be colonization of alternative habitats, such as parks, orchards or rural avenues, located in the highly fragmented agricultural landscape. Our main objective was to determine the effect of both habitat quality parameters and isolation from potential forest habitats, as primary habitats, on the occurrence of the hermit beetle (Osmoderma) in rural avenues in south-western Poland. The study was based on the results of an inventory of the species in 201 rural avenues within an area of approx. 30,000 km2. Occurrence of the hermit beetle in such alternative habitats was affected by both habitat quality parameters and connectivity with suitable forest habitats. The species occurrence in an avenue was significantly positively affected by mean tree diameter and diversity of tree species, but probability of occurrence decreased as isolation of avenue from the deciduous forest increased. Moreover, in the study area the hermit beetle seemed to avoid alleys with a large proportion of Acer platanoides, Fraxinus excelsior and Populus spp. Spatially isolated roadside avenues have limited value in the preservation of the hermit beetle in the long term conservation management of the species. Conservation plans in such habitats should therefore take into account surrounding suitable habitats.  相似文献

Thirty-nine species of bugs, representing meso-and xerophilic inhabitants of open tundra, meadow, and steppe landscapes, were collected within the altitude range of 1260–1850 m above sea level in the upper Kyubyume River basin (63°13′N, 139°36′E, the Indigirka River basin). In the sub-golets sparse forest zone (up to 1550 m), 37 species were recorded, the dominant form being Chlamydatus pullus. The bugs were rare in most of the habitats; their species richness and abundance increased distinctly only on the south-facing slopes, reaching the maximum in the cryophytic steppe. The specific features of these complexes manifested themselves in the prevalence of Capnoda nigroaenea, a xerophilic species of alpine mountain steppes. The rest of the dominants comprised the ecologically flexible Emblethis brachynotus, Chlamydatus pullus, and Galeatus spinifrons. In the goletstundra zone, 8 species were found, half of them being arctic forms (Calacanthia trybomi, Orthotylus artemisiae, Ch. wilkinsoni, and Ch. opacus). Ch. wilkinsoni was the most common species. The species composition of bug groups in the dry lichen-dryad communities within this zone resembled that of similar communities of zonal tundra, whereas the humid habitats remained unpopulated, unlike their plain analogues. Comparison of the heteropteran fauna of mountain tundras in different regions of the Verkhoyansk-Kolyma mountain country attests to significant variations of its species composition. The possible reasons for these differences are discussed.  相似文献
