Spodoptera litura Fabricius is a major vegetable pest that is widely distributed throughout tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. Microplitis prodeniae Rao and Chandry is a solitary endoparasitoid of S. litura. To assess the potential use of this parasitoid as a biological control agent, the reproductive schedule, fecundity and functional response of M. prodeniae were investigated under conditions of 28 ± 1°C and 70 ± 10% relative humidity with a 14:10-h L:D photoperiod. The parasitoid’s average lifetime fecundity was 171.0 ± 10.4 eggs, of which approximately 50% were laid within the first 3 days. Additionally, M. prodeniae exhibited a Holling type II functional response, and the estimated maximum numbers of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd instar larvae that were parasitized by a single M. prodeniae female were 71.6, 78.4 and 41.5 larvae over a 24-h period, respectively. The results of this study suggest that M. prodeniae has great potential as a candidate for controlling S. litura and can guide efforts in its mass production.  相似文献

Habrobracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a cosmopolitan gregarious ectoparasitoid that attacks larvae of several species of Lepidoptera. Although there are two genetically different strains within H. hebetor, distribution of the strains has been poorly understood. In 2010, in Thailand, where H. hebetor has been known as a parasitoid of stored grain pests, it was found that H. hebetor attacked Opisina arenosella Walker (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae), which is an invasive pest of coconut palm. For correct identification of this H. hebetor, we conducted DNA analysis and cross tests using populations collected from O. arenosella and stored grain pests in Thailand and populations in Japan known as H. hebetor. We obtained 413 bp of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) sequences and 414 bp of 16S rRNA gene sequences, and both indicated that there are two distinct clades within H. hebetor: one contains insects from Thailand, Spain, India, and Barbados; the other contains insects from Japan and the USA. There were no genetic differences or sexual isolation between Thai populations from different hosts. Our results also showed that populations in Thailand were sexually isolated from a H. hebetor population in Japan.  相似文献

Sublethal concentrations of chemical insecticides may cause changes in some behavioral characteristics of natural enemies such as functional responses. The residual effect of three synthetic insecticides including deltamethrin, fenvalerate and azadirachtin were studied on functional response of Habrobracon hebetor Say to Ephestia kuehniella Zeller larvae. Seven host densities (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 96) were used during a 24 h period. The resulting data were appropriately fit to Type II functional response models in all treatments: (1) control (0.0916 h?1; and T h  = 0.2011 h); (2) deltamethrin (a = 0.0839 h?1; and T h  = 0.3560 h); (3) fenvalerate (a = 0.0808 h?1 and T h  = 0.3623 h); and (4) azadirachtin (a = 0.0900 h?1 and T h  = 0.2042 h). Maximum theoretical parasitism rate (T/T h ) was 119.34 estimated for control wasps. There was no significant difference between the values of attack rates (a and a + D a ) in all treatments while the handling time was statistically affected in female wasps treated with fenvalerate. Our findings will be useful in safe application of these insecticides in pest management programmes.  相似文献

Habrobracon hebetor Say is one of the most important ectoparasitoids of the larval stage of many invasive agricultural pests such as noctuid and pyralid moths. Lethal and sublethal effects of carbaryl and abamectin were assessed on the ectoparasitoid H. hebetor in laboratory conditions. Dose–response bioassays were carried out on immature and adult stages by using dipping and contact residue methods, respectively. LC50 (lethal concentration for 50%) values of carbaryl and abamectin were 31.19 and 4.16 mg a.i. l−1 on larval stage and 12.6 and 4.42 mg a.i. l−1 on adults, respectively. In order to assess the sublethal effects, adult wasps were exposed to an LC30 of each insecticide and then the demographic parameters of live wasps were studied. The results showed that the intrinsic rate of increase (r m ), finite rate of increase (λ), net reproductive rate (R0) and gross reproductive rate (GRR) were significantly affected by the insecticides. The highest and the lowest r m values were 0.23 and 0.17 in control and carbaryl-treated insects, respectively. The sex ratio of H. hebetor offspring was not significantly affected by either insecticide. The results showed that carbaryl had more adverse effects on population parameters of the parasitoid compared to abamectin. Field studies are needed to determine the total effects of the pesticides on H. hebetor.  相似文献

The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), is one of the most important aphid pests on pepper. Aphidius matricariae Haliday and Praon volucre (Haliday) are known as biological control agents for aphids in vegetable crops. In this research, age-specific functional responses of these two parasitoids were evaluated on different densities of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 green peach aphids. Type of functional response varied from type II to type III for different ages of A. matricariae, but type of functional response was not affected by female age for P. volucre. The functional response of P. volucre was determined as type II in the whole parasitoid lifetime. The searching efficiency (a), b, and handling time (T h ) were estimated using the Rogers equations. The highest searching efficiency (a) and lowest handling time were observed during the first half of lifetime of A. matricariae and P. volucre. Aphidius matricariae and P. volucre caused reasonable mortality of the green peach aphid by parasitism of 52.17 and 47.05 host aphids, respectively, in 24 h. Therefore, they are suggested as suitable candidates for control of M. persicae in pepper greenhouses.  相似文献

We conducted three bioassays to evaluate the effect of low-temperature storage of eggs (host) and pupae and adults (parasitoid) on the biology and parasitism capacity of the egg parasitoid Telenomus remus (Nixon) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae). Viable stored Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs were parasitized to the same degree or even higher than fresh eggs when stored until 14 days at 5°C or until 21 days at 10°C. In contrast, the percentage of parasitized sterilized eggs was equal to the control only when stored for 7 and 14 days. Survival of T. remus pupae declined with storage time at both studied temperatures (5 and 10°C). However, after 7 days of storage, survival of pupae was still 86.3 and 64.9% at 10 and 5°C, respectively. The number of adult male survivors remained similar until the fourth storage day at both 5 and 10°C. In contrast, female survival did not differ until day 8 at 10°C or day 6 at 5°C. Parasitism capacity of stored adults was not altered by storage compared with the control. Therefore, we conclude that the maximal storage time at 10°C is 21 days for viable C. cephalonica eggs and 7 days for T. remus pupae, while parasitoid adults should not be stored for more than 4 days at either 5 or 10°C.  相似文献

The behavioral response of the larval parasitoid Spintherus dubius (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) to volatile compounds derived from its Apion weevil hosts was investigated in two-choice bioassays. Odor source candidates were the larval and adult stages of weevils, clover flowers, and feces from adult weevils. Despite S. dubius being a larval parasitoid, the odor of weevil larvae isolated from the clover flowers was not attractive to female parasitoids. Surprisingly, S. dubius females were instead attracted by the odor from the feces of adult weevils. The female parasitoids were similarly attracted to the feces produced by the two main hosts, the red clover weevil (A. trifolii) and the white clover weevil (A. fulvipes). Chemical analysis of the volatile composition of feces produced by the two hosts revealed qualitatively similar odor profiles, correlating with the observed attraction by the parasitoid towards both odor sources. Some of the identified volatile compounds are commonly present in clover plant headspace fractions and may function as a kairomone to facilitate orientation by S. dubius to Apion-infested clover flowers. Larval and adult weevils were not attractive for parasitoid females, whereas, for the white clover weevil-plant association, infested flowers were highly attractive. These data show the use by the clover weevil parasitoid of an alternative source of olfactory information for locating its host.  相似文献

Euglossa viridissima is an orchid bee that forms both solitary and multiple female nests, making it a suitable species for the study of factors leading to diverse degrees of sociality in Euglossines. We conducted observations in eight reused nests (where a first generation of bees had been produced) kept in artificial boxes from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Five nests were reused (reactivated) by a single female (SFN), two nests reused by a mother and one daughter (MFN1) and one nest reused by the mother and two daughters (MFN2). No single nest was reactivated by unrelated females. The number of foraging trips, their duration and the duration of cell provisioning was not different between SFN and MFN. The overall production of cells per female was not different either between both types of nest. However, in MFN although all females did lay eggs, there was a reproductive skew in favor of the mother (95 and 45% of the brood produced in MFN1 and MFN2 respectively). She showed reproductive control of her daughters through oophagy and displaying threatening behavior when the daughters tried to open a cell where she had laid an egg. Brood losses to parasites (Anthrax sp. (Bom-byliidae) and Hoplostelis bivittata (Megachilidae)) were only found in SFN which possibly reflects and advantage of MFN in this respect. Our results coupled with other studies in Euglossa, reveal that a wide range of social behaviors occur in this genus, from solitary and communal to primitive reproductive division of labor. Multiple factors involving different levels of pressure imposed by food availability and parasites may favor such a diverse range of nesting behaviors. Interestingly, female associations in E. viridissima seem a result of kin selection that is enforced by coercion from mother females on their daughters. More studies are needed to shed light upon the social organization of Euglossa and other Euglossines and on their phylogenetic relationships in order to trace the origins of eusociality in Apidae. Males of the solitary bee Amegilla (Asarapoda) paracalva employ two mate-locating tactics: aggressive defense of sites from which virgin females are emerging and patrolling flower patches that are visited by conspecific females. At one study site, a single male was able to control an entire emergence area for one or more days. Multiple males patrolled one flower patch, interacting aggressively on occasion but no one individual was able to monopolize this resource. Territorial males at the emergence site secured mates by waiting by tunnels for receptive virgin females to emerge after metamorphosis. Males patrolling the flower patch pounced upon flower visiting conspecifics and mated with receptive females there. Territorial males at the emergence site were larger than average individuals, probably because of the advantage larger males have when grappling with opponents. Flower patrolling males were smaller than territorial males at the emergence sites, perhaps because of the advantages gained by these males from rapid, agile flight.  相似文献

Two repeated DNA sequences isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of Helianthus annuus, p HaS13 and p HaS211, were shown to represent portions of the int gene of a Ty3 /gypsy retroelement and of the RNase-Hgene of a Ty1 /copia retroelement, respectively. Southern blotting patterns obtained by hybridizing the two probes to BglII- or DraI-digested genomic DNA from different Helianthus species showed p HaS13 and p HaS211 were parts of dispersed repeats at least 8 and 7 kb in length, respectively, that were conserved in all species studied. Comparable hybridization patterns were obtained in all species with p HaS13. By contrast, the patterns obtained by hybridizing p HaS211 clearly differentiated annual species from perennials. The frequencies of p HaS13- and p HaS211-related sequences in different species were 4.3x10(4)-1.3x10(5) copies and 9.9x10(2)-8.1x10(3) copies per picogram of DNA, respectively. The frequency of p HaS13-related sequences varied widely within annual species, while no significant difference was observed among perennial species. Conversely, the frequency variation of p HaS211-related sequences was as large within annual species as within perennials. Sequences of both families were found to be dispersed along the length of all chromosomes in all species studied. However, Ty3 /gypsy-like sequences were localized preferentially at the centromeric regions, whereas Ty1/ copia-like sequences were less represented or absent around the centromeres and plentiful at the chromosome ends. These findings suggest that the two sequence families played a role in Helianthusgenome evolution and species divergence, evolved independently in the same genomic backgrounds and in annual or perennial species, and acquired different possible functions in the host genomes.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that transgenic insect resistant plants can have negative effects on non-target herbivores as well as on beneficial insects. The study of tritrophic interactions gives insight into the complex mechanisms of food webs in the field and can easily be incorporated into a tiered risk assessment framework. We investigated the effects of transgenic maize (Zea mays) expressing insecticidal proteins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt maize) on Spodoptera littoralis, a non-target herbivore, and on the hymenopteran parasitoid Cotesia marginiventris. In a laboratory study, S. littoralis larvae were reared for their whole lifespan on a mixture of leaves and stems from 2–4-week old Bt maize plants. S. littoralis survival, developmental times and larval weights were significantly affected by Bt maize diet. However, adult moths, which survived development on Bt maize, were the same size as the adults from the control group.C. marginiventris survival, developmental times and cocoon weights were significantly negatively affected if their S. littoralis host larva had been fed Bt maize. ELISA tests confirmed that S. littoralis larvae ingest high amounts of Cry1A(b) toxin while feeding on Bt maize. In S. littoralis pupae and in C. marginiventris cocoon silk, only traces of the toxin could be detected. No toxin was found in S. littoralis and C. marginiventris adults. Thus the toxin is not accumulating in the trophic levels and in fact appears to be excreted. Our results suggest that the effects on C. marginiventris when developing in susceptible S. littoralis larvae are indirect (host mediated). The biological relevance of those results and the significance of this study in risk assessment are discussed.  相似文献

Traditionally viewed as an Andean grain crop,Chenopodium quinoa Willd. includes domesticated populations that are not Andean, and Andean populations that are not domesticated. Comparative analysis of leaf morphology and allozyme frequencies have demonstrated that Andean populations, both domesticated(quinua) and free-living(ajara), represent an exceptionally homogeneous unit that is well differentiated from allied domesticates of coastal Chile(quingua) and freeliving populations of the Argentine lowlands(C. hircinum). This pattern of relationships indicates that Andean populations represent a monophyletic crop/weed system that has possibly developed through cyclic differentiation (natural vs. human selection) and introgressive hybridization. Relative levels of variation suggest that this complex originated in the southern Andes, possibly from wild types allied withC. hircinum, with subsequent dispersal north to Colombia and south to the Chilean coast. Coastal populations were apparently isolated from post-dispersal differentiation and homogenization that occurred in the Andes. Other data point toward a center of origin in the northern Andes with secondary centers of genetic diversity subsequently developing in the southern Andes and the plains of Argentina. Comparative linkage of South American taxa, all tetraploid, with North American tetraploids of the subsection will eventually clarify this problem. While the possibility of a direct phyletic connection betweenC. quinoa and the Mexican domesticate(C. berlandieri subsp. nuttalliae,) cannot be excluded, available evidence indicates that the latter represents an autonomous lineage that is associated with the basal tetraploid, C. b. subsp.berlandieri, through var.sinuatum, whereas South American taxa show possible affinities to either var. zschackei or var.berlandieri. An extinct domesticate of eastern North America,C. b. subsp.jonesianum, represents either another instance of independent domestication, possibly from subsp. b. var.zschackei, or a northeastern outlier of subsp.nuttalliae.  相似文献

We have investigated the floral ontogeny of Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis (of the eucalypt group, Myrtaceae) using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Several critical characters for establishing relationships between these genera and to the eucalypts have been determined. The absence of compound petaline primordia in Arillastrum, Allosyncarpia, Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis excludes these taxa from the eucalypt clade. Post-anthesis circumscissile abscission of the hypanthium above the ovary in Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia is evidence that these three taxa form a monophyletic group; undifferentiated perianth parts and elongated fusiform buds are characters that unite Stockwellia and Eucalyptopsis as sister taxa. No floral characters clearly associate Arillastrum with either the eucalypt clade or the clade of Stockwellia, Eucalyptopsis and Allosyncarpia. We gratefully acknowledge Clyde Dunlop and Bob Harwood (Northern Territory Herbarium) for collecting specimens of Allosyncarpia, and Bruce Gray (Atherton) for collecting specimens of Stockwellia. The Australian National Herbarium (CANB) kindly lent herbarium specimens of Eucalyptopsis for examination. Studying Pneumocystis has proven to be a challenge from the perspective of propagating a significant amount of the pathogen in a facile manner. The study of several fungal pathogens has been aided by the use of invertebrate model hosts. Our efforts to infect the invertebrate larvae Galleria mellonella with Pneumocystis proved futile since P. murina neither caused disease nor was able to proliferate within G. mellonella. It did, however, show that the pathogen could be rapidly cleared from the host.  相似文献

Single (unpaired) vegetative cells of freshwater pennate diatom Neidium cf. ampliatum differentiated into gametangia and produced a single zygote (auxospore) via a pedogamic process. The gametic nuclei fused after auxospore expansion had begun. The auxospore expanded in parallel to the apical axis of the gametangium.  相似文献
