As female crickets, Teleogryllus commodus (Walker) age there is a progressive change in their ability to produce eggs as indicated by the number deposited. Virgin females lay very few eggs (11/week) when only one week old, but the number increases to an average value of 160/week by the age 3, 5 or 7 weeks post imago. There is essentially no change in the number of eggs oviposited when very young (1 week old) or senescent (7 weeks old) females are mated, but there is a dramatic increase in the long term production of eggs when females are mated at middle age (3 and 5 weeks old). The results are correlated with previously published data from this species on the JH III titres of virgin females and females mated at different ages.
Zusammenfassung Das Altern von T. commodus-Weibchen bringt eine fortschreitende Veränderung in ihrer Eiproduktion mit sich, die sich in der Anzahl von abgelegten Eiern ausdrückt. Während 1 Woche-alte, unbegattete Weibchen wenige Eier (11/Woche) ablegen, steigt ihre Zahl im Alter von 3, 5 oder 7 Wochen auf eine Durchschnittswert von 160/Woche an. Eine Begattung von jungfräulichen Weibchen im Alter von 1 Woche oder 7 Wochen ändert die Anzahl der abgelegten Eier nicht, wogegen sich bei 3–5 Wochen alten Weibchen zu einem dramatischen Anstieg in der langfristigen Eiproduktion führt. Growth and survival responses were determined for black field crickets Teleogryllus commodus (Walker) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) on artificial diets containing a range of levels of dietary protein, and protease inhibitors (PI's) at 0.33% (weight volume, w:v). The effect on cricket gut enzyme activities of adding PI's to a high protein diet was measured. All PI's which had in vitro binding activity against either trypsin or elastase (the two major cricket gut endopeptidases) reduced growth, but those which bound to both enzymes had the greatest effect. None of the PI's acted as a source of nutritional protein. Cricket growth rate increased with the addition of casein up to 3% w:v, but not with a similar addition of wheatgerm. The impact of PI's on growth was greatest on a 1.5% casein diet. On a high protein (3% casein) diet, the gut activity of trypsin was increased by potato proteinase inhibitors 1 and 2 while the activity of elastase and leucine amino peptidase were increased by soybean trypsin inhibitor and potato proteinase inhibitor 2. Increasing dietary casein up to 3.3% improved cricket survival. The potential of PI's as plant resistance factors against crickets was confirmed. 相似文献

This paper describes the embryonic development of some parts of the sensory peripheral nervous system in the leg anlagen of the cricket Teleogryllus commodus in normal and heat shocked embryos. The first peripheral neurons appear at the 30% stage of embryogenesis. These tibial pioneer neurons grow on a stereotyped path to the central nervous system and form a nerve which is joined by the growth cones of axons that arise later, including those from the femoral chordotonal organ, subgenual organ and tympanal organ. The development of these organs is described with respect to the increase in number of sensory receptor cells and the shape and position of the organs. At the 100% stage of embryogenesis all three organs have completed their development in terms of the number of sense cells and have achieved an adult shape. To study the function of the tibial pioneer neurons during embryogenesis a heat shock was used to prevent their development. Absence of these neurons has no effect on the development of other neurons and organs proximal to them. However, the development of distal neurons and organs guided by them is impaired. The tibial pioneer neurons grow across the segmental boundary between femur and tibia early in development, and the path they form seems to be essential for establishing the correct connections of the distal sense organs with the central nervous system. 相似文献

Summary In the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, and the Australian field cricket, Teleogryllus commodus, the two nerves supplying the bases of the cerci are joined by a branch that crosses behind the last abdominal ganglion. This commissural ring nerve is restricted to females, and it contains many axons filled with granular and agranular vesicles. The axons stem from somata located within the ganglion. There are one (Periplaneta) or two (Teleogryllus) groups of median neurons with bilaterally symmetrical bifurcations, and a group of postero-ventral neurons on each side. In T. commodus, these neurons are distinct from others associated with the cerci. In the two species, the ring nerve neurons contribute to a neuropile near the root of each cereal nerve. The bifurcating median neurons arborize on both sides before entering the ring nerve, while the postero-ventral ones branch more extensively ipsilateral to their somata. The possibilities are discussed that the bifurcating neurons may be homologous to dorsal unpaired median neurons, and that the ring nerve may be a neurohemal area. 相似文献

Antisera against a variety of vertebrate and invertebrate neuropeptides were used to characterize neurons with somata in the pars intercerebralis (PI), pars lateralis (PL), and subesophageal ganglion (SEG), designated as PI neurons, PL neurons, and SEG neurons, respectively, all of which project to the retrocerebral complex in the blow fly, Protophormia terraenovae. Immunocytochemistry combined with backfills through the cardiac-recurrent nerve revealed that at least two pairs of PI and SEG neurons for each were FMRFamide-immunoreactive. Immunoreactivity against [Arg7]-corazonin, beta-pigment-dispersing hormone (beta-PDH), cholecystokinin8, or FMRFamide was observed in PL neurons. Immunoreactive colocalization of [Arg7]-corazonin with beta-PDH, [Arg7]-corazonin with cholecystokinin8, or beta-PDH with FMRFamide was found in two to three somata in the PL of a hemisphere. Based on their anatomical and immunocytochemical characteristics, PI neurons were classified into two types, PL neurons into six types, and SEG neurons into two types. Fibers in the retrocerebral complex showed [Arg7]-corazonin, beta-PDH, cholecystokinin8, and FMRFamide immunoreactivity. Cholecystokinin8 immunoreactivity was also detected in intrinsic cells of the corpus cardiacum. The corpus allatum was densely innervated by FMRFamide-immunoreactive varicose fibers. These results suggest that PI, PL, and SEG neurons release [Arg7]-corazonin, beta-PDH, cholecystokinin8, or FMRFamide-like peptides from the corpus cardiacum or corpus allatum into the hemolymph, and that some PL neurons may simultaneously release several neuropeptides. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. When injected into the haemolymph of newly emerged adult males of the field cricket, Teleogryllus commodus (Walker), [3 H]arachidonic acid is incorporated into tissue phospholipids. Two reproductive tissues, testes and accessory glands, incorporate and preserve the labelled arachidonic acid for at least 49 days. With onset of circadian rhythm-controlled spermatophore production, radioactive arachidonic acid is incorporated into spermatophore phospholipids. After mating with untreated females, radioactivity was detected in spermathecae and in haemolymph from females. Some of the transferred radioactive arachidonic acid is subsequently converted into prostaglandins. Summary The neurosecretory cells of the ventral ganglia in the adult dragonfly, Orthetrum chrysis, are classified into A, B, C1 and C2 cells. The neurosecretory material in the ventral ganglia is composed of PAS-positive material with 1-, 2-glycol groups and some proteins. The proteins rich in cystine or cysteine occur predominantly in the A cells, moderately in C cells and negligibly in B cells. Proteins containing arginine occur in A and B cells only, and those containing basic amino acids occur in C2 cells. The neurosecretory pathways and the neurohemal organs are also described. 相似文献

The morphology and functions of the brain neurons projecting to the retrocerebral complex were examined in terms of photoperiodic control of adult diapause in the bean bug, Riptortus pedestris. Backfills through the nervi corporis cardiaci stained 15-20 pairs of somata in the pars intercerebralis (PI) with contralateral axons, and 14-24 pairs in the pars lateralis (PL) with ipsilateral axons to the nervi corporis cardiaci. In the PL, two clusters of somata, PL-d and PL-v, were found. Forwardfills showed neurons in the PI terminated in the aorta, and those in the PL at the corpus cardiacum, corpus allatum, and aorta. Removal of the PI did not cause effects on diapause incidence both under short-day (12 h:12 h, light:dark) and long-day conditions (16 h:8 h, light:dark) at 25 degrees C. Under short-day conditions, diapause incidence was significantly lower than the controls after removal of the PL. Either removal of PL-d or PL-v did not reduce diapause incidence. It decreased only when both the PL-d and PL-v were ablated. The PI is not indispensable for diapause in R. pedestris, and both PL-d and PL-v neurons are suggested to be involved in photoperiodic inhibition of ovarian development. 相似文献

The calling song of the field cricket, Teleogryllus taiwanemma, is usually considered to consist of sequences of separate chirps. However, sometimes it comprises a phrase of several chirps in a row, with one long chirp (chirp) and a few short chirps (trills). In this study, I compared the phrase containing only chirps with that containing both chirps and trills by analyzing male songs and conducting playback experiments of male songs to females. The song analyses showed significant differences between chirps and trills for all song parameters except bandwidth. To test whether female preference differed with respect to the two phrases, I performed two-speaker playback experiments. When the same numbers of phrases were presented per unit time, females preferred the song with trills to that without trills. This result may reflect female preference for songs with greater sound density. In subsequent playback experiments, I equalized the total sound duration per unit time (duty cycle) in songs with and without trills. The numbers of females that preferred songs with and without trills did not differ significantly. This suggests that trills can attract females like chirps do, even though the two sounds have different components. 相似文献

Summary The presence and distribution of neurons immunoreactive against antibodies to serotonin (5-HT) and gastrin/cholecystokinin (gastrin/CCK) has been studied in the larval retrocerebral complex of the blowfly Calliphora erythrocephala, a composite structure which consists of the corpus cardiacum, the corpus allatum, the thoracic gland and a portion of the cephalic aorta. Immunoreactive material was found in all these elements except in the corpus allatum. Six to eight cell bodies in the corpus cardiacum and four to eight cell bodies in the thoracic gland were 5-HT immunoreactive (5-HTi). These 5-HTi cell bodies send processes to the neuropil of the corpus cardiacum and to neurohemal sites in the cephalic aorta, corpus cardiacum and ventral part of the thoracic gland. Six to eight cell bodies in the corpus cardiacum and four to six cell bodies in the thoracic gland reacted with antibodies against gastrin/CCK. These cell bodies send processes to the neuropil of the corpus cardiacum and to neurohemal sites in the corpus cardiacum and the cephalic aorta in a pattern resembling that of the 5-HTi fibers. Additional gastrin/CCK-like immunoreactive fibers were shown to come from the central nervous system via the two nervi corporis cardiaci. An electron-microscopical analysis was performed to analyze further the morphological features revealed by the light-microscopic immunocytochemical technique. This confirmed the existence of neurosecretory-like terminals among the gland cells of the thoracic glands and the existence of neurohemal sites in several regions of the larval retrocerebral complex. Some functional aspects of the retrocerebral complex are discussed on the basis of the presented data. 相似文献

Morphological and electrical properties of neurons with somata in the pars intercerebralis (PI) and pars lateralis (PL) were examined by intracellular recording and staining in the adult blow fly, Protophormia terraenovae. According to the location of somata and fiber distribution, two types of PI neurons (PIa and PIb) and two types of PL neurons (PLa and PLb) were identified. PIb neurons were further divided into two subgroups of PIb1 and PIb2 depending on fiber branching patterns in the retrocerebral complex. PIa neurons projected axons to the contralateral nervi corporis cardiaci, whereas PLa and PLb neurons projected axons to the ipsilateral nervi corporis cardiaci. PIb neurons characteristically showed symmetrical morphology with their somata along the midline. PLb neurons had a large branching area in the subesophageal ganglion. In the retrocerebral complex, PIb2 and PLa neurons sent fibers into the corpus allatum. PIa, PIb1 and PLb neurons projected not to the corpus allatum but to the corpus cardiacum–hypocerebral complex or visceral muscles in their vicinity. PIa, PIb and PLa neurons showed long spike durations (3–10 ms). PLb neurons were immunoreactive with antisera against corazonin, FMRFamide, or -pigment-dispersing hormone. A novel endogenous β-1,4-endoglucanase (EG) gene belonging to the glycosyl hydrolase family 9 (GHF 9) that is distributed throughout the digestive tract of the cricket Teleogryllus emma was cloned and characterized. This gene, named TeEG-I, consists of eight exons encoding 453 amino acid residues and exists as a single copy in the T. emma genome. TeEG-I possesses all the features, including signature motifs and catalytic domains, of GHF 9 members, sharing high levels of identity with the termite, Mastotermes darwiniensis (64% protein sequence identity), and the cockroach, Panesthia cribrata (62%), GHF 9 cellulases. Recombinant TeEG-I, which is expressed as a 47-kDa polypeptide in baculovirus-infected insect Sf9 cells, showed an optimal pH and temperature of pH 5.0 and 40 °C. The Km and Vmax values for digestion of carboxymethyl cellulose were 5.4 mg/ml and 3118.4 U/mg, respectively. Northern and Western blot analyses revealed that TeEG-I is present throughout the digestive tract, which correlated with the TeEG-I distribution and cellulase activity in the digestive tract as assayed by immunofluorescence staining and enzyme activity assay, respectively. These results indicate that TeEG-I is distributed throughout the entire digestive tract of T. emma, suggesting a functional role of endogenous TeEG-I in a sequential cellulose digestion process throughout the T. emma digestion tract. 相似文献

Summary Ovariectomy, performed immediately after the final hatch, caused a reduction of stainable (neurosecretory?) material in the paramedial neurosecretory cells (PNC) (A-type) of the suboesophageal ganglion in 10 day-old females of Teleogryllus commodus (Walk.). A concomitant increase in nuclear volume and in the incorporation of 35S-cysteine indicates increased synthesis of neurosecretory material. From these findings it is concluded that more stainable material is secreted in the cerebral neurohaemal organ after Ovariectomy. Sexual dimorphism is presumed to reflect adaptive divergence in response to selection favouring different optimal character states in the two sexes. Here, we analyse patterns of sexual dimorphism in the cuticular hydrocarbons of the Australian field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus using gas chromatography. Ten of the 25 peaks found in our chromatographs, differed in their relative abundance between the sexes. The presence of sexual dimorphism in T. oceanicus is discussed in reference to a review of sexual dimorphism in cuticular hydrocarbons of other insects. We found that this trait has been examined in 103 species across seven different orders. Seventy-six of these species (73%) displayed sex specificity of cuticular hydrocarbons, the presence/absence of which does not appear to be directly linked to phylogeny. The occurrence of sexual dimorphism in cuticular hydrocarbons of some but not other species, and the extent of variation within genera, suggest that this divergence has been driven primarily by sexual selection. 相似文献

Summary The paramedian neurosecretory cells (PNC) (A-type) in the suboesophageal ganglion of the cricket, Teleogryllus commodus (Walk.), have been studied by electron microscopy. In control animals (10 day-old virgin females) three different cell stages could be distinguished: Stage 1 shows a variable content of elementary granules and characteristics of actively synthesising cells. Stage 2 is characterised by the presence of numerous fusion bodies, which are formed by the coalescence of elementary granules, presumably for storage purposes. In stage 3 granules are degraded in lysosomes (?). While the production of material rich in cysteine increases after ovariectomy (Dürnberger et al., 1978), the fine structure of the cells is essentially unchanged. The only noted differences are an increased lysosomal synthetic activity and the existence of stages intermediate between 2 and 3, which were never found in control animals. Summary Three antisera were used to study the distribution and anatomy of bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP)-like/FMRFamide-like immunoreactive neurones within the unfused abdominal ganglia of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria. All the antisera used stained two or more clusters of perikarya, localized anteriorly and posteriorly near the midline within each unfused abdominal ganglion. Double labelling experiments with intracellular dye injection, or differential backfilling, combined with subsequent immunostaining were carried out to identify these neurones. Two of the antisera (antisera 1 and 2, both raised against FMRFamide) stained three groups of midline neurones, located anterior dorsal, anterior ventral and posterior dorsal within the ganglion. Neurones of the former of these two clusters projected via the anterior median nerve to a neurohaemal organ. The posterior cluster of midline cells comprised immunopositive perikarya all but one of which also projected via the anterior median nerve to innervate the neurohaemal organ. Double labelling with Lucifer yellow and antisera 1 and 2 showed that the remaining neurone was the previously identified doral unpaired median (DUM)heart1 neurone. The third antiserum (AK141), also raised against FMRFamide, stained neurones within an anterior dorsal cluster, and in a posterior cluster. Double labelling with differential Co2+/Ni2+-backfilling and the antiserum 3 (AK141) demonstrated that the large neurones of both clusters belonged to the population of bilaterally projecting neurones (BPNs), including the DUMheart1 neurone. Since the antisera cross-react with BPP and fail to label neurones when preadsorped with BPP or FMRFamide, we conclude that the labelled neurones contain polypeptides of the FMRFamide/BPP-family. 相似文献

Bats that glean prey (capture them from surfaces) produce relatively inconspicuous echolocation calls compared to aerially
foraging bats and could therefore be difficult predators to detect, even for insects with ultrasound sensitive ears. In the
cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus, an auditory interneuron (AN2) responsive to ultrasound is known to elicit turning behaviour, but only when the cricket is
in flight. Turning would not save a cricket from a gleaning bat so we tested the hypothesis that AN2 elicits more appropriate
antipredator behaviours when crickets are on the ground. The echolocation calls of Nyctophilus geoffroyi, a sympatric gleaning bat, were broadcast to singing male and walking female T. oceanicus. Males did not cease singing and females did not pause walking more than usual in response to the bat calls up to intensities
of 82 dB peSPL. Extracellular recordings from the cervical connective revealed that the echolocation calls elicited AN2 action
potentials at high firing rates, indicating that the crickets could hear these stimuli. AN2 appears to elicit antipredator
behaviour only in flight, and we discuss possible reasons for this context-dependent function. 相似文献

Summary The neuronal pathways connecting the stomatogastric nervous system with the retrocerebral complex of the cockroach, Periplaneta americana, were investigated by means of axonal cobalt chloride iontophoresis. Somata in the hypocerebral ganglion and in the nervus recurrens sending their axons to different parts of the stomatogastric nervous system were traced. Some axons in the oesophageal nerve arise from large perikarya in the anterior part of the pars intercerebralis and pass via the NCCI to the corpora cardiaca and the oesophageal nerve. They form a profuse dendritic tree in the protocerebrum. Fibers of the NCC I and NCC II as well as the NCA I and NCA II enter the stomatogastric nervous system via the hypocerebral ganglion. 相似文献
