A trial is described, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, as one of a series suggested to investigate the effects of strategic but selective acaricide treatments of cattle within herds against Boophilus microplus. They are aimed at considering the repercussions of farmer attempts at immediate reductions in acaricide costs and the potential for creation of ‘refugia’ of untreated ticks. Half (Group 1) of a small experimental herd of European breed heifers were treated strategically against ticks, three times during the late spring–early summer and twice during autumn (southern hemisphere), with an injectable avermectin endectocide, designed to act directly against the first and third generations of parasitic B. microplus per ‘cattle tick year’ at this site, respectively. The consequent levels of infestations on all of the member cattle in their common pasture were monitored. Group 1 showed low to zero tick counts during the 28-day treatment interval periods and up to ca. 14 days after the last of such a series. Treated cattle, however, became re-infested outside of these periods and to levels that would be considered as unacceptable by farmers in the state. The untreated cattle (Group 2) showed infestations at generally higher levels, than their contemporaries, within and outside of the treatment periods. There were thus ample sources of larvae in the pasture, derived principally from falling, untreated engorged female ticks, re-infesting both the treated and untreated cattle. Advantages of maintaining chemically untreated cattle ticks within a herd, compared to their disadvantages as contaminants to classical strategic control procedures, merit re-evaluation, especially in relation to the recent, world-wide resurgence of acaricide resistance in B. microplus. Strategic tick control is an attempt to control ticks and reduce losses in animal production due to tick infestations while decreasing the cost for this control. Tick control is understood as a necessity to achieve maximum animal production from animals raised in tick-infested areas. At the same time, it has become difficult to justify intensive, year-round tick control for local breeds and their crosses. The increasing costs of acaricides, maintenance of the infrastructures, salaries for personnel, etc. have created a tick control programme where the benefits may not be adequate to justify the expense. This has been the case in Burundi. This programme with adequate participation from the cattle owners of Burundi and organizational support from government personnel can help solve this economic problem. The strategic programme reduces the period of tick control to four months each year. Once optimal participation is achieved, this period can probably be reduced to three months (Kaiser et al., 1988). The period of treatment corresponds to when there is maximal feeding activity of adult female ticks on the bovine population within a certain region. Cattle should be treated once each week throughout the four-month period in order to prevent female tick engorgement (based on the life cycle of R. appendiculatus). This will greatly reduce the number of female ticks which are available to recycle the population of ticks in the participating area. At the same time, a certain population of ticks must be maintained in order to assure contact between the cattle, ticks, and tick-borne diseases of this particular region.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Two herds of experimental Sanga cattle were maintained under traditional savanna grazing management for three years in the Central Province of Zambia. One herd was kept free of ticks by regular acaricide treatment, while the other was given no tick control. Milk production, growth rate, fertility and mortality were monitored throughout the trial. The tick-free herd performed significantly better than the tick-infested herd, but the value of the additional production was much less than the cost of the acaricide used. it is concluded that there is no economic justification for intensive tick control under these conditions. However, strategic tick control would be justified if the quantity of acaricide used could be reduced by 50% without any major reduction in benefits. The results indicate that treating calves below 45 days of age reduces their performance, as does treating cows during periods of very low tick challenge. Therefore, it seems likely that economically beneficial strategic tick control policies could be developed.  相似文献

Studies were carried out in Zambia using a farming systems approach to quantify the effects of tick control on traditionally managed Sanga cattle. In the first trial to investigate the effect of tick control, significant improvements in liveweight gain (LWG) occurred only in periods of medium to high challenge with adult Amblyomma variegatum. However, during the first 18 months of the study when animals were young, the acaricide used caused a suppression in weight gains. A supplementary experimental study indicated that the adverse effects of ticks on weight gain may be delayed when animals are on a low plane of nutrition. In both studies on the effects of ticks on LWG, estimates of weight loss per female A. variegatum were in the range of 46 to 69 g. In the second long term trial to measure the impact of tick control on overall heard productivity, outputs of milk and weaner calf per livestock unit carrying capacity were about 25% higher in a tick-free herd. The annual cost of control in 1988 at ZK286.26/livestock unit was greater than the increase in value of the products at ZK175.48/livestock unit carrying capacity. It is concluded from these studies that intensive tick control in the multipurpose livestock system in Zambia is not justified in the absence of serious tick-borne disease. However, strategic seasonal tick control of adult ticks from November to April would probably be economically viable. Calves should not be treated until they are 3 months of age.  相似文献

Controlling ticks and tick-borne diseases by frequent applications of acaricides (e.g., dipping) is costly, and can leave treated livestock vulnerable to epizootics of tick-borne diseases should the system of applying acaricides break down. The concept of only applying acaricides on an infrequent (strategic) basis often relies on the target tick population displaying a seasonal cycle. However, as adult bont tick (Amblyomma hebraeum) infestations in Zimbabwe's lowveld do not have a strictly seasonal pattern of occurrence, it is recommended that tick control only be applied when bont tick infestations are equal to, or greater than, their economic damage threshold. The economic damage threshold is the minimum average weekly standard female tick burden sufficient to cause damage equal in dollar value to the costs of applying tick control. Assuming that each standard female tick represents a 10 gram weight loss, the economic damage threshold (standard female ticks/week) is equivalent to the ratio of the producer price of beef (liveweight equivalent): per head cost of dipping (Eqn (3)). To illustrate the application of the threshold methodology, it was assumed that the producer price of beef was Z$1.63/kg (U.S.$0.33/kg) and that tick control cost Z$0.29/hd/dip (U.S.$0.06/hd/dip). This gave a threshold of 18 standard female ticks/head/week. Using tick counts obtained from 20 Brahman cattle held at Mbizi in southeastern Zimbabwe, it was shown that for the 1988 calendar year there were only 32 weeks when the economic damage threshold was met or exceeded. This is substantially less that the 44 dippings per year that have been, until very recently, legally required in Zimbabwe. Sensitivity analysis showed that a 10% rise in the cost of dipping reduced to 23 (a 28% decrease) the number of weeks when tick burdens exceeded the economic damage threshold. By further assuming that an acaricide application and residual effects will cause a 3–5 week interval before the next application may be required, the number of weeks when the tick burden was equal to or greater than the threshold of 18 standard females/week fell to just 9–12 weeks. Three factors may cause an alteration in the economic damage threshold: i) tick burdens may cause damage to the udders; ii) secondary infestations (e.g., screw-worm) may cause economic damage; and iii) nutritional stress of the cattle may reduce the actual average per tick weight loss. Until further data becomes available, it is recommended that the economic damage threshold methodology be used as described here, and that farmers closely observe their herds during the suggested weekly tick sampling for udder damage and secondary infestations.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that about 90% of adult Amblyomma variegatum Fabricius (Acari: Ixodidae) picked up daily by grazing cattle are still attached to the interdigital areas in the evening, when the animals return from pasture. It was therefore postulated that a targeted treatment, designed to kill the ticks attached to the feet, would limit infestation of the predilection sites. Footbaths filled with various pyrethroid formulations were used over 3 years, at the beginning of the rainy season (from mid-May to the end of July), to assess the efficacy of such a control method. It proved efficient in preventing the ticks from attaching to the predilection sites. Although five to 12 A. variegatum adults attached to each treated animal daily, and although the tick burden of the predilection sites of control cattle increased each day by four to 10 ticks, the average infestation of the predilection sites of treated cattle that were initially highly infested (over 100 ticks/animal) continuously decreased to reach a level of about 10-30 ticks/animal after 6-8 weeks of treatment. In herds with a lower initial tick burden (40-70 ticks/animal) this level was obtained within 2-3 weeks and the mean infestation subsequently remained consistently low. Footbath treatment carried out every other day during the adult peak infestation period should therefore greatly limit losses due to ticks. This method was appreciated by traditional livestock farmers, essentially because it is not time-consuming and because it requires only c. 200 mL aqueous formulation per animal at each passage. The cost of the acaricide needed to treat one animal during the peak infestation period was assessed at c. euro 0.20. This control method might also have an impact on some species of tsetse flies and mosquitoes, thereby contributing to trypanosomiasis and malaria control.  相似文献

Impacts of sheep ticks Ixodes ricinus on livestock, gamebirds and wildlife are of concern across Europe. The present study describes livestock and tick management by 36 farmers from three upland sites of conservation importance in North Wales, where farmers consider that ticks have increased during the last 25 years. Sheep, average densities of 2.0 animals per ha were treated with pour‐on acaricides in spring, again in July, and also when removed from the moor in autumn. Given acaricide efficacy rates, sheep were susceptible to tick bites for half the period on the moor. Sheep from 17 farms were examined for ticks. Infestations were similar between farms and in relation to the acaricide used, averaging 9.3 ticks per sheep, although they were lower where the interval between successive acaricide treatments was shorter. Repeated sampling of sheep and red grouse chicks showed no annual difference in tick burdens on grouse chicks, which averaged 6.2 ticks per chick, although there were three‐fold fewer ticks on sheep in 2018 than in previous years. Tick bite rates on sheep and grouse were higher than elsewhere in the U.K. Most farmers interviewed would aim to improve their tick management using longer‐lasting acaricides and treating sheep more frequently, although they would need advice and financial help, which is currently unavailable via Government funded agri‐environment schemes.  相似文献

The efficacy of tags impregnated with pheromone and acaricide for control of Amblyomma variegatum on cattle in Guadeloupe was determined for a 13-week trial. Comparisons were made between untreated cattle and cattle with tags containing either pheromones alone (o-nitrophenol, methyl salicylate, 2,6-dichlorophenol and phenylacetaldehyde), pheromones plus acaricide (cyfluthrin or deltamethrin), or acaricide alone. Tags were fastened to cattle both on collars on the neck and with adhesive to tail hairs, with over 98 and 90% of tags retained, respectively, during the trial. By the end of the trial, tick infestations increased on untreated cattle (311.7%) and cattle with pheromone tags (154.8%) but decreased on cattle with pheromone/cyfluthrin (–45.0%), cyfluthrin (–42.8%), pheromone/deltamethrin (–68.7%) and deltamethrin tags (–87.6%). Cattle with pheromone tags had greater proportions of ticks on the hind regions (81%) compared to untreated cattle (62.5%) and on the front regions (18.2%) compared to untreated cattle (8.2%) indicating that ticks aggregated in response to pheromones. Analysis of hair samples by gas chromatography indicated that, within 2 days of placement, cyfluthrin spread rapidly over the body from the tags. Both cyfluthrin and deltamethrin were present in detectable levels on all eight body regions examined throughout the trial. Analysis of the tags indicated that they all still contained pheromone components after 13 weeks under field conditions.  相似文献

In order to determine the effect of various hosts on feeding performance of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, we used 3 mammalian species as hosts, cattle (Qinchuan), sheep (T an), and rabbits (Japanese white rabbit) for infest-ing ticks. Five hundreds of R. microplus larvae were exposed to each animal (3 animals/host species). Tick recoveries were 11.0%, 0.47%, and 5.5% from cattle, sheep, and rabbits, respectively. The averages of tick feeding periods were not significantly different on cattle, sheep, and rabbits, 28.8, 25.3, and 26.7 days, respectively. The average weights of individual engorged female from cattle, sheep, and rabbits were 312.5, 219.1, and 130.2 mg, respectively and those of egg mass weights each to 85.0, 96.6, and 17.8 mg. The highest egg hatching rate was in the ticks from cattle (96.0%), fol-lowed by those from rabbits (83.0%) and sheep (19.2%). These data suggest that rabbits could be as an alternative host to cultivate R. microplus for evaluating vaccines and chemical and biological medicines against the tick in the laboratory, although the biological parameters of ticks were less than those from cattle.  相似文献

The cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus microplus (Canestrini) (Acari: Ixodidae), is a one-host tick that infests primarily cattle in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. This species transmits deadly cattle pathogens, especially Babesia spp., for which a recombinant vaccine is not available. Therefore, disease control depends on tick vector control. Although R. microplus was eradicated in the USA, tick populations in Mexico and South America have acquired resistance to many of the applied acaricides. Recent acaricide-resistant tick reintroductions detected in the U.S. underscore the need for novel tick control methods. The octopamine and tyramine/octopamine receptors, both G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR), are believed to be the main molecular targets of the acaricide amitraz. This provides the proof of principle that investigating tick GPCRs, especially those that are invertebrate-specific, may be a feasible strategy for discovering novel targets and subsequently new anti-tick compounds. The R. microplus leucokinin-like peptide receptor (LKR), also known as the myokinin- or kinin receptor, is such a GPCR. While the receptor was previously characterized in vitro, the function of the leucokinin signaling system in ticks remains unknown. In this work, the LKR was immunolocalized to the periphery of the female midgut and silenced through RNA interference (RNAi) in females. To optimize RNAi experiments, a dual-luciferase system was developed to determine the silencing efficiency of LKR-double stranded RNA (dsRNA) constructs prior to testing those in ticks placed on cattle. This assay identified two effective dsRNAs. Silencing of the LKR with these two validated dsRNA constructs was verified by quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR) of female tick dissected tissues. Silencing was significant in midguts and carcasses. Silencing caused decreases in weights of egg masses and in the percentages of eggs hatched per egg mass, as well as delays in time to oviposition and egg hatching. A survey of ticks affecting dairy cattle under extensive management on Menorca island (off the Spanish Mediterranean coast) was performed through 1999-2000 on seven farms. The species collected were Rhipicephalus bursa, R. turanicus, Hyalomma m. marginatum, H. lusitanicum and Boophilus annulatus. The most abundant species were R. bursa and H. m. marginatum, with peaks of 10.7 (in summer) and 7.5 (in spring) ticks/cow, respectively. R. turanicus was scarcely encountered, while B. annulatus and H. lusitanicum were abundant only in a few localities. The mild climate and adequate vegetation on the island provide satisfactory habitat for extended periods of tick activity, as compared with other regions where these ticks have been collected. The competence of the ticks as vectors for pathogens and the difficulty of using acaricide treatments in the region are discussed.  相似文献

Long-term studies on the economic impact of ticks on Sanga cattle in Zambia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Three different tick control policies were tested in groups of traditionally managed Sanga cattle in the Central Province of Zambia over a period of 3 years. One group was given strategic tick control using 12 pyrethroid acaricide spray applications between the onset and the end of the wet season (October to March). The productivity of this herd was compared with that of a group with no tick control and a group under an intensive tick control regimen of spraying every week in the wet season and every 2 weeks in the dry season (36 applications per year). The highest output was associated with intensive tick control, followed by strategic control and then no tick control policies. However, when the costs of tick control were taken into account, the strategic tick control policy produced the best economic result, followed by the intensive and then the no tick control policies. Neither the strategic nor the intensive tick control policy was sufficient to prevent the transmission of East Coast fever (ECF) infection when this disease was introduced to the area.  相似文献

The ticks Amblyomma hebraeum and A. variegatum are the main vectors of heartwater, a disease of ruminants caused by Cowdria ruminantium, in the agricultural areas of Zimbabwe. At present, A. hebraeum is widely distributed in the dry southern lowveld, and occurs in at least seven foci in the higher rainfall highveld. Amblyomma variegatum occurs in the Zambezi valley and surrounding dry lowveld areas in the northwest. The distribution of A. hebraeum has changed considerably over the past 70 years, while that of A. variegatum appears to have remained fairly static. The distribution patterns of both species in Zimbabwe display anomalous features; the ticks occur in areas of lowest predicted climatic suitability for survival and development and in areas where the densities of cattle, the most important domestic host, are lowest. The only factor favouring the survival of the species in the lowveld habitats in which they occur is the presence of alternative wildlife hosts for the adult stage. Their absence from more climatically favourable highveld habitats appears to have been the result of intensive acaricide treatment of cattle over a long period and a historic absence of significant numbers of wildlife hosts. Eradication of A. hebraeum and A. variegatum by intensive acaricide treatment of cattle can be achieved in the absence of significant numbers of alternative hosts, because of the long attachment and feeding periods of the adults of these tick species. However, eradication becomes impossible when alternative hosts for the adult stage are present, because a pheromone emitted by attached males attracts the unfed nymphal and adult stages to infested hosts. The unfed ticks are not attracted to uninfested hosts, such as acaricide-treated cattle.Regular acaricide treatment of cattle is expensive and so, for economic reasons, the Government of Zimbabwe is no longer enforcing a policy of strict tick control. It is likely that reduced tick control will result in the spread of Amblyomma ticks to previously uninfested areas. Added to this, recent introductions of various wildlife species to highveld commercial farming areas have created conditions in which the ticks could become established in higher rainfall areas. Amblyomma hebraeum is more likely to spread than A. variegatum, because its adults parasitize a wider range of wildlife hosts (warthogs, medium to large-sized antelope, giraffe, buffalo and rhinoceros), whereas adults of A. variegatum appear to be largely restricted to one wildlife species (buffalo) in Zimbabwe, the distribution of which is now confined to very limited areas of the country, as part of foot and mouth disease control measures. A model to predict the rate of spread of A. hebraeum through the highveld is described.Possible control options for dealing with the spread of Amblyomma ticks and heartwater to previous unaffected highveld areas, include (1) continuation of intensive acaricide treatment of cattle to prevent the spread, (2) establishment of a buffer zone of intensive tick control around affected areas to contain the spread and (3) allow the spread to occur and control heartwater by means of immunization. An economic analysis to determine the costs and benefits of the control options, which takes into account the development of Amblyomma-specific tick control technologies and improved heartwater vaccines, is recommended.Deceased.  相似文献

Paralysis caused by feeding female Ixodes rubicundus ticks is a major problem in large areas of South Africa. As the life cycle of the tick extends over a period of 2 years, it was hypothesized that strategic treatment of sheep with an acaricide over a 2 year period, timed to kill most engorging females, should markedly lower the biotic potential of the tick. Two flocks of sheep grazing in separate paddocks known to be infested with I. rubicundus were treated either strategically or on a threshold basis (i.e. only when tick challenge exceeded a predetermined critical level in terms of paralysis) for a 2 year period. The tick burdens of untreated control sheep running with the two flocks were monitored over a 4 year period and their seasonal dynamics determined. The times at which peak infestations occurred were similar for both flocks of sheep, but significant differences in mean tick burdens between the two flocks were recorded. Tick numbers on sheep in the strategically treated flock did not decrease during the third and fourth years of the trial as was expected. Possible reasons for this were low stocking densities, especially during times of peak abundance of adults and the presence of wild hosts which maintained tick populations.  相似文献

Strongyle faecal egg output was estimated in N'Dama, Zebu and N'Dama x Zebu crossbred (F1) cattle. N'Dama cattle showed a significantly lower prevalence of strongyle infection, as measured by faecal egg output, than F1 (P < 0.01) and Zebu (P < 0.001) cattle. In strongyle-infected animals, mean egg output was also significantly lower in N'Damas (P < 0.03) than in Zebus. A previous trypanosomiasis infection did not affect the results. The presence of a natural resistance trait to strongyle infection in N'Dama cattle is postulated.  相似文献

Field trials were carried out during 1982-86 in two different ecotypes in central Zambia to determine the impact of tick control on the liveweight gain (LWG) of cattle. During the first 2 years of the trial a diamidide acaricide (Amitraz) sprayed at weekly intervals caused periodic depression in LWG in young animals. Thereafter a pyrethroid acaricide (cypermethrin) was used. During the 1984-85 tick season infestations of 50-120 adult Amblyomma variegatum Fabricius in untreated animals caused significant reductions in LWG. From the differences in LWG between treated and untreated cattle, the induced loss in LWG was estimated at 46-61 g per engorged female A.variegatum.  相似文献

Analysis of doramectin concentration in blood serum of pastured cattle injected repeatedly (12 treatments) at two different dosage rates and 28-day intervals throughout the year was used to predict the probability that cattle fever ticks could successfully feed to repletion during the interval between any two consecutive treatments. Treatment at ~270 μg/kg indicated that serum doramectin concentration dropped below the baseline concentration estimated for tick survival (8 ppb) in 7 of the 12 treatments. However, the longest period between any two treatments during which the doramectin concentration remained below the 8 ppb baseline level for successful tick feeding was 15 days, making it virtually impossible for any ticks to reach ovipositional status prior to a subsequent treatment. At a dosage rate of ~540 μg/kg, the concentration dropped below the baseline tick survival level (8 ppb) only once, following the initial treatment, and the duration during which the concentration remained below the baseline level prior to the subsequent treatment was only 6 days. Thus, at the high dosage rate results indicated, with absolute certainty, that no ticks could successfully feed to repletion between any two consecutive treatments. Based on the data obtained in the study it was concluded that analysis of doramectin concentration in serum of treated animals would be a reliable predictor for assessing the probability that ticks could successfully develop to repletion. More importantly, results demonstrated that the trial policy, instituted by the Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program, of repeatedly treating cattle with doramectin injections at 25–28 day intervals for eliminating cattle fever ticks would produce little or no risk of any viable ticks developing to repletion and re-infesting the field between treatment applications.  相似文献

Amblyomma variegatum, introduced into Guadelopue 150 years ago, has recently spread in the Lesser Antilles and threatens North America. Two important diseases are associated with the tick: heartwater and dermatophilosis. Heartwater occurs in Guadeloupe, Marie-Galante and Antigua; acute dermatophilosis exists almost everywhere the tick is present. Both are very pathogenic for upgraded or newly-infested cattle. After 15 years of A. variegatum control in Guadeloupe, a balance is established between a tick population maintained at a low level by spraying acaricides and an animal population either completely resistant to heartwater and dermatophilosis (creole cattle) or regularly treated against ticks (upgraded cattle). An eradication campaign against A. variegatum in Guadeloupe, to avoid the spread of the associated diseases, appears technically difficult but possible, economically profitable, but socially completely utopian. We suggest for Guadeloupe a reinforced control of the tick with a persistent acaricide, hoping that a general decrease of the tick infestation rate on cattle will eliminate heartwater and acute dermatophilosis.  相似文献

Tick- and tsetse-borne diseases cost Africa approximately US$4-5 billion per year in livestock production-associated losses. The use of pyrethroid-treated cattle to control ticks and tsetse promises to be an increasingly important tool to counter this loss. However, uncontrolled use of this technology might lead to environmental damage, acaricide resistance in tick populations and a possible exacerbation of tick-borne diseases. Recent research to identify, quantify and to develop strategies to avoid these effects are highlighted.  相似文献

Effect of deer reduction on abundance of the deer tick (Ixodes dammini)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
To evaluate the role of deer in regulating the abundance of the deer tick (Ixodes dammini) we attempted to treat with acaricide, but eventually removed, about 70 percent of deer from Great Island, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Deer were captured in box traps, a corral, an entanglement net, and with rifle-fired tranquilizer. Failure of these attempts, combined with ineffective acaricides, led us to deer destruction begun in fall 1982. Larval tick abundance on mice was monitored before and after deer removal. We concluded that deer removal, to the extent accomplished, did not markedly reduce the abundance of the tick. Reduced abundance of deer may not result in reduced abundance of immature ticks if deer removal follows the period of adult tick feeding, or if intensity of infestation per deer increases, or if other mammals substitute as suitable hosts. Reduced tick abundance may be delayed if unattached immature ticks survive more than one year.  相似文献
