In this paper, we describe domain-general auditory processes that we believe are prerequisite to the linguistic analysis of speech. We discuss biological evidence for these processes and how they might relate to processes that are specific to human speech and language. We begin with a brief review of (i) the anatomy of the auditory system and (ii) the essential properties of speech sounds. Section 4 describes the general auditory mechanisms that we believe are applied to all communication sounds, and how functional neuroimaging is being used to map the brain networks associated with domain-general auditory processing. Section 5 discusses recent neuroimaging studies that explore where such general processes give way to those that are specific to human speech and language.  相似文献

Studies on the sensitivity of man's hearing to the reception of amplitude modulation (AM) of the sound reveal statistically reliable threshold minimum in the region of 4-6 c. p. s. It is suggested that this phenomenon is evolutionary conditioned by tuning of human auditory system on the perception of speech, in which AM results from articulation of the syllables. The acoustical analysis of several speech extracts demonstrated statistically reliable maximum of AM of the sound flow just within 4-6 c. p. s. Therefore, the selective sensitivity of hearing to perception of these AM frequencies increases the safety and interference resistance of the system "speech-hearing".  相似文献

It remains unclear how specific mechanical signals generated by applied dynamic compression (DC) regulate chondrocyte biosynthetic activity. It has previously been suggested that DC-induced interstitial fluid flow positively impacts cartilage-specific matrix production. Modifying fluid flow within dynamically compressed hydrogels therefore represents a promising approach to controlling chondrocyte behavior, which could potentially be achieved by changing the construct architecture. The objective of this study was to first determine the influence of construct architecture on the mechanical environment within dynamically compressed agarose hydrogels using finite element (FE) modeling and to then investigate how chondrocytes would respond to this altered environment. To modify construct architecture, an array of channels was introduced into the hydrogels. Increased magnitudes of fluid flow were predicted in the periphery of dynamically compressed solid hydrogels and also around the channels in the dynamically compressed channeled hydrogels. DC was found to significantly increase sGAG synthesis in solid constructs, which could be attributed at least in part to an increase in DNA. DC was also found to preferentially increase collagen accumulation in regions of solid and channeled constructs where FE modeling predicted higher levels of fluid flow, suggesting that this stimulus is important for promoting collagen production by chondrocytes embedded in agarose gels. In conclusion, this study demonstrates how the architecture of cell-seeded scaffolds or hydrogels can be modified to alter the spatial levels of biophysical cues throughout the construct, leading to greater collagen accumulation throughout the engineered tissue rather than preferentially in the construct periphery. This system also provides a novel approach to investigate how chondrocytes respond to altered levels of biophysical stimulation.  相似文献

Background

Recently two major manufacturers of hearing aids introduced two distinct frequency-lowering techniques that were designed to compensate in part for the perceptual effects of high-frequency hearing impairments. The Widex “Audibility Extender” is a linear frequency transposition scheme, whereas the Phonak “SoundRecover” scheme employs nonlinear frequency compression. Although these schemes process sound signals in very different ways, studies investigating their use by both adults and children with hearing impairment have reported significant perceptual benefits. However, the modifications that these innovative schemes apply to sound signals have not previously been described or compared in detail.

Methods

The main aim of the present study was to analyze these schemes''technical performance by measuring outputs from each type of hearing aid with the frequency-lowering functions enabled and disabled. The input signals included sinusoids, flute sounds, and speech material. Spectral analyses were carried out on the output signals produced by the hearing aids in each condition.

Conclusions

The results of the analyses confirmed that each scheme was effective at lowering certain high-frequency acoustic signals, although both techniques also distorted some signals. Most importantly, the application of either frequency-lowering scheme would be expected to improve the audibility of many sounds having salient high-frequency components. Nevertheless, considerably different perceptual effects would be expected from these schemes, even when each hearing aid is fitted in accordance with the same audiometric configuration of hearing impairment. In general, these findings reinforce the need for appropriate selection and fitting of sound-processing schemes in modern hearing aids to suit the characteristics and preferences of individual listeners.  相似文献

In this brief report it is shown that without the use of language and/or complex tones, it has been possible to determine whether or not the potential of residual hearing is being fully utilized by the hearing impaired child or adult with or without an aid. Furthermore, because the system is one of direct and immediate comparison it can be used to confirm if the initial selection of a specific hearing prosthesis is potentially correct.  相似文献

Radicicol-sensitive peptide binding to the N-terminal portion of GRP94   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
GRP94 is a molecular chaperone that carries immunologically relevant peptides from cell to cell, transferring them to major histocompatibility proteins for presentation to T cells. Here we examine the binding of several peptides to recombinant GRP94 and study the regulation and site of peptide binding. We show that GRP94 contains a peptide-binding site in its N-terminal 355 amino acids. A number of peptides bind to this site with low on- and off-rates and with specificity that is distinct from that of another endoplasmic reticulum chaperone, BiP/GRP78. Binding to the N-terminal fragment is sufficient to account for the peptide binding activity of the entire molecule. Peptide binding is inhibited by radicicol, a known inhibitor of the chaperone activities of HSP90-family proteins. However, the peptide-binding site is distinct from the radicicol-binding pocket, because both can bind to the N-terminal fragment simultaneously. Furthermore, peptide binding does not cause the same conformational change as does binding of radicicol. When the latter binds to the N-terminal domain, it induces a conformational change in the downstream, acidic domain of GRP94, as measured by altered gel mobility and loss of an antibody epitope. These results relate the peptide-binding activity of GRP94 to its other function as a chaperone.  相似文献

Three Strategies to Overcome the Limitations of Life-Cycle Assessment   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Many research efforts aim at an extension of life‐cycle assessment (LCA) in order to increase its spatial or temporal detail or to enlarge its scope. This is an important contribution to industrial ecology as a scientific discipline, but from the application viewpoint other options are available to obtain more detailed information, or to obtain information over a broader range of impacts in a life‐cycle perspective. This article discusses three different strategies to reach these aims: (1) extension of LCA—one consistent model; (2) use of a toolbox—separate models used in combination; and (3) hybrid analysis—combination of models with data flows between them. Extension of LCA offers the most consistent solution. Developments in LCA are moving toward greater spatial detail and temporal resolution and the inclusion of social issues. Creating a supertool with too many data and resource requirements is, however, a risk. Moreover, a number of social issues are not easily modeled in relation to a functional unit. The development of a toolbox offers the most flexibility regarding spatial and temporal information and regarding the inclusion of other types of impacts. The rigid structure of LCA no longer sets limits; every aspect can be dealt with according to the logic of the relevant tool. The results lack consistency, however, preventing further formal integration. The third strategy, hybrid analysis, takes up an intermediate position between the other two. This strategy is more flexible than extension of LCA and more consistent than a toolbox. Hybrid analysis thus has the potential to combine the strong points of the other two strategies. It offers an interesting path for further discovery, broader than the already well‐known combination of process‐LCA and input‐output‐LCA. We present a number of examples of hybrid analysis to illustrate the potentials of this strategy. Developments in the field of a toolbox or of hybrid analysis may become fully consistent with LCA, and then in fact become part of the first solution, extension of LCA.  相似文献

Much of our daily communication occurs in the presence of background noise, compromising our ability to hear. While understanding speech in noise is a challenge for everyone, it becomes increasingly difficult as we age. Although aging is generally accompanied by hearing loss, this perceptual decline cannot fully account for the difficulties experienced by older adults for hearing in noise. Decreased cognitive skills concurrent with reduced perceptual acuity are thought to contribute to the difficulty older adults experience understanding speech in noise. Given that musical experience positively impacts speech perception in noise in young adults (ages 18-30), we asked whether musical experience benefits an older cohort of musicians (ages 45-65), potentially offsetting the age-related decline in speech-in-noise perceptual abilities and associated cognitive function (i.e., working memory). Consistent with performance in young adults, older musicians demonstrated enhanced speech-in-noise perception relative to nonmusicians along with greater auditory, but not visual, working memory capacity. By demonstrating that speech-in-noise perception and related cognitive function are enhanced in older musicians, our results imply that musical training may reduce the impact of age-related auditory decline.  相似文献

The gene mutated in the human genetic disorder ataxia-telangiectasia codes for a protein, ATM, the known functions of which include response to DNA damage, cell cycle control, and meiotic recombination. Consistent with these functions, ATM is predominantly present in the nucleus of proliferating cells; however, a significant proportion of the protein has also been detected outside the nucleus in cytoplasmic vesicles. To understand the possible role of extra-nuclear ATM, we initially investigated the nature of these vesicles. In this report we demonstrate that a portion of ATM co-localizes with catalase, that ATM is present in purified mouse peroxisomes, and that there are reduced levels of ATM in the post-mitochondrial membrane fraction of cells from a patient with a peroxisome biogenesis disorder. Furthermore the use of the yeast two-hybrid system demonstrated that ATM interacts directly with a protein involved in the import of proteins into the peroxisome matrix. Because peroxisomes are major sites of oxidative metabolism, we investigated catalase activity and lipid hydroperoxide levels in normal and A-T fibroblasts. Significantly decreased catalase activity and increased lipid peroxidation was observed in several A-T cell lines. The localization of ATM to peroxisomes may contribute to the pleiotropic nature of A-T.  相似文献

Because arthropods dominate terrestrial ecosystems in species number and biomass, they can potentially play a major role as environmental indicators in applied ecology and nature conservation. We tested the suitability of arthropods as indicators for particular forest types based on a comprehensive standardized sampling of various taxa by different trap types in 93 mature temperate forest sites in three regions of Germany. We tested whether indicator species (1) can be derived for different forest types across regions, (2) are more widespread and more abundant than non-indicator ones, (3) belong to a particular taxon or trophic guild, and (4) are consistent between regions and years. Among 2041 sampled arthropod species, only four were significant indicator species for the same forest type in all region, and no single taxon or guild performed better than other groups. Indicators were generally more abundant and more widespread than non-indicators, but both abundance and distribution varied widely between species. When the analysis was repeated using data from the next year, indicator values of species significantly correlated between years, but the identity of more than 50 % of significant indicators changed, suggesting high among-year variability. We conclude that overall, arthropods did not turn out to be reliable indicators, at least at the scale of Germany. If anything, arthropod indicator species should be defined at the regional scale. Furthermore, indicators should be selected across taxa and trophic levels. Future evaluation of indicator species among arthropods should be conducted over several years based on standardized sampling protocols to develop a reliable definition of indicator species despite the high fluctuations in abundance of species among arthropods, which might either mask or overestimate the indicator value of particular species.  相似文献

Limitations to the Accumulation of Starch in the Developing Wheat Grain   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The postulate that photosynthetic capacity limits the rate ofaccumulation of starch and dry matter in the developing wheatgrain has been tested by defoliating plants growing in the field,and by culturing detached ears on solutions of sucrose. In mostcases complete defoliation did not reduce the amounts of starchor dry matter produced 4 to 10 days later, or affect the amountsof sucrose in the grain. Increasing the potential supply ofsucrose above normal levels by culturing did not lead to increasesin either the deposition of starch or the quantity of sucrosein the grain. Removing leaves caused small depressions in thegain in fresh weight of the grain, and where defoliation didreduce the accumulation of starch there was no comparable effecton the amount of sucrose in the grain. Accordingly, it is concludedthat the postulate stated above is invalid. The case in support of the concept that it is the mechanismregulating the passage of sucrose into the grain which imposesa limitation on the accumulation of starch is presented.  相似文献
