Many species exhibit reduced siring success of self-relative to outcross-pollen donors. This can be attributed either to postfertilization abortion of selfed ovules or to cryptic self-incompatibility (CSI). CSI is a form of self-incompatibility whereby the advantage to outcross pollen is expressed only following pollinations where there is gametophytic competition between self and outcross pollen. Under the definition of CSI, this differential success is due to the superior prefertilization performance (pollen germination rate and pollen tube growth rate) of outcross pollen relative to self pollen. Although CSI has been demonstrated in several plant species, no studies have assessed among-population variation in the expression of CSI. We conducted a greenhouse study on Clarkia unguiculata (an annual species with a mixed-mating system) to detect CSI, and we compare our observations to previous reports of CSI in C. gracilis and another population of C. unguiculata. In contrast to these previous studies of CSI in Clarkia, we used genetic rather than phenotypic markers to measure the relative performance of selfed vs. outcross pollen. In this study, we measured the intensity of CSI in C. unguiculata from a large population in southern California and we determined whether the magnitude of pollen competition (manipulated by controlling the number of pollen grains deposited on a stigma) influenced the outcome of competition between self and outcross pollen. In contrast to previous investigations of Clarkia, we found no evidence for CSI. The mean number of seeds sired per fruit did not differ between self and outcross pollen following either single-donor or mixed pollinations. In addition, the relative success of selfed vs. outcross pollen was independent of the magnitude of pollen competition. These results suggest that: (1) one of the few nonheterostylous species previously thought to be cryptically self-incompatible is completely self-compatible (at least in the population studied here) or (2) phenotypic markers may be problematic for the detection of CSI.  相似文献

In plants capable of both self-fertilization and outcrossing, the selfing rate depends on the proportion of self pollen in pollen loads and on the relative postpollination success of self pollen in siring offspring. While the composition of pollen loads is subject to unpredictable variation, paternity success of self vs. outcross pollen following pollen deposition may be controlled by maternal plants. This study examined postpollination paternity success in Clarkia gracilis ssp. sonomensis, in which deposition of self pollen is common. Pure loads of self and outcross pollen produced similar numbers of mature seeds, but equal mixtures of self and outcross pollen yielded more than three times as many outcrossed offspring as selfed offspring. The finding that the paternity success of self pollen depends on whether it is in competition with outcross pollen helps to explain an earlier finding that the selfing rate in experimental populations was highest when pollinator activity was lowest. Cryptic self-incompatibility allows paternity by self pollen when outcross pollen is unavailable.  相似文献

Self-incompatibility (SI) has emerged as an evolutionary strategy to enhance the genetic variability of plant species. In Brassica, it is controlled by a single multiallelic locus, the S-locus, encoding a receptor kinase (SRK) expressed in the stigma papilla cells and its ligand, a small protein (SCR) located in the pollen coat. Pollen rejection is achieved only when the receptor recognizes SCR coming from the same S-allele. If a single papilla cell is simultaneously pollinated by a self- and a cross-pollen grain, it is capable of distinguishing between the two and responding accordingly, rejecting self while accepting cross pollen. This phenomenon reveals that SI response is strictly localized and does not involve the whole papilla cell. It also suggests that the distribution of SRK inside the cell may play an important role in regulating this dual response. We have recently demonstrated that SRK is mostly intracellular, only small amounts being present in distinct domains of the plasma membrane (PM), where interaction with SCR occurs. Following ligand recognition, the receptor-ligand complex is endocytosed and degraded. Based on this, we propose a model of the significance of SRK intracellular trafficking for the functioning and specificity of SI response.Key words: self-incompatibility, S-receptor kinase, internalization, SI domains  相似文献

In angiosperm pollen the reticulate-perforate exine sculpturing is associated with sporophytic self-incompatibility (S.S.I.) and imperforate and microperforate exine sculpturing is associated with gametophytic self-incompatibility. The earliest unequivocal angiosperm pollen conforms to exine morphology of pollen from plants with S.S.I. The orgin of S.S.I. is hypothesized to have coincided with the appearance of what is now the earliest recognizable angiosperm pollen. Other angiosperm characteristics correlated with S.I., functional stigmatic areas, large showy flowers (or aggregated inflorescences), and passive seed dispersal, provide some insight into the biological aspects of the earliest angiosperms.  相似文献

The gametophytic two-locus self-incompatibility (SI) system in rye was investigated in view of a possible involvement of protein phosphorylation and Ca2+ as constituents of a signal transduction mechanism. Phosphorylation kinetics in pollen grains was found to be significantly different after in vitro treatment of pollen with either cross or self stigma proteins, with a pronounced phosphorylation activity in self-treated pollen grains. Loss of SI in self-compatible (SC) mutants was associated with a significantly decreased basic phosphorylation activity in untreated pollen grains as compared to SI genotypes. Separation of phosphorylated pollen proteins by SDS-PAGE reveals four major proteins in the MW range of 43–82 kDa which were differently phosphorylated in SI vs SC genotypes as well as in cross vs self-treated pollen grains. Application of different protein kinase inhibitors and the Ca2+ antagonists verapamil and La3+ to isolated stigmas resulted in an inhibition of the SI response in in vitro self-pollination. The role of protein kinases and Ca2+ as constituents of a putative SI-specific signal transduction mechanism is discussed.  相似文献

Background and AimsThe transition from outcrossing to selfing is a frequent evolutionary shift in flowering plants and is predicted to result in reduced allocation to pollinator attraction if plants can self-pollinate autonomously. The evolution of selfing is associated with reduced visual floral signalling in many systems, but effects on floral scent have received less attention. We compared multiple populations of the arctic–alpine herb Arabis alpina (Brassicaceae), and asked whether the transition from self-incompatibility to self-compatibility has been associated with reduced visual and chemical floral signalling. We further examined whether floral signalling differ between self-compatible populations with low and high capacity for autonomous self-pollination, as would be expected if benefits of signalling decrease with reduced dependence on pollinators for pollen transfer.MethodsIn a common garden we documented flower size and floral scent emission rate and composition in eight self-compatible and nine self-incompatible A. alpina populations. These included self-compatible Scandinavian populations with high capacity for autonomous self-pollination, self-compatible populations with low capacity for autonomous self-pollination from France and Spain, and self-incompatible populations from Italy and Greece.Key ResultsThe self-compatible populations produced smaller and less scented flowers than the self-incompatible populations. However, flower size and scent emission rate did not differ between self-compatible populations with high and low capacity for autonomous self-pollination. Floral scent composition differed between self-compatible and self-incompatible populations, but also varied substantially among populations within the two categories.ConclusionsOur study demonstrates extensive variation in floral scent among populations of a geographically widespread species. Contrary to expectation, floral signalling did not differ between self-compatible populations with high and low capacity for autonomous self-pollination, indicating that dependence on pollinator attraction can only partly explain variation in floral signalling. Additional variation may reflect adaptation to other aspects of local environments, genetic drift, or a combination of these processes.  相似文献

The South-African Oxalis pes-caprae with trimorphic flowers is naturalised in many Mediterranean countries. In Italy only short-styled (S) populations are known for certain and the plant is believed to reproduce only asexually, due to self- and intramorph-incompatibility. This study aims to clarify anatomical, biochemical and ultrastructural features of the stigma and style of an Italian S population, also to define their possible role in incompatibility. Additional observations were also carried out on other Italian population and on short-, long- (L) and mid-styled (M) flowers from plants of South African origin. Morphological and biochemical features of flowers collected in different phenological stages during the whole flowering season were observed both under LM and TEM. In S flowers, three different zones could be distinguished in each stigma-style complex: zone I (stigmatic), zone II (substigmatic), zone III (stylar). The main differences concern the transmitting tissue: in zones I and III this is composed of loosely arranged cells with thick walls, with an abundant soft matrix which at anthesis is rich in mucopolysaccharides and lacks pectins. In zone II, it is more compact, with a less abundant wall matrix, at anthesis containing both mucopolysaccharides and pectins. In S flowers, subjected to illegitimate pollination, many pollen tubes penetrate the stigmatic papillae but apparently are arrested in zone II; only few—and mostly at the end of flowering period—succeed reaching zone III, where they encounter no further resistance to growth. Differently, after legitimate pollinations, pollen tubes succeed in crossing transmitting tissue of zone II, where cell walls of cells lying close to pollen tubes show a considerably reduced pectin content. In L and M flowers of South African origin, no peculiar transmitting tissue could be noticed in the substigmatic zone. In such flowers, pollen tubes seemingly grow easily from stigma to style both after legitimate and illegitimate pollinations. Results suggest that in S flowers the rigid transmitting tissue in zone II acts as a mechanical barrier for illegitimate pollen tubes, as the spaces between cells are narrower than the tube diameter and pectins maintain the rigidity of the cell walls, preventing cells from separating from one another. This obstacle can be overcome by legitimate pollen tubes, which make their way between cells, possibly releasing or activating specific pectinases. However, the blocking of illegitimate tubes is not absolute: a few of such tubes grow beyond zone II and reach the ovules, so that occasional fertilisation and embryo formation can be observed. In M and L flowers, different self-incompatibility mechanisms can be hypothesised.  相似文献

Summary Recent theories predict the evolution of dioecy among higher plants, in association with certain pollination and fruit dispersal traits. However, reported associations of dioecy with pollination, dispersal and growth form traits have not distinguished the effects of each trait separately, controlling for the others. Because these traits are associated among themselves, existing analyses may involve spurious or indirect correlations. This paper reports the incidence of dioecy in a subarctic and an arctic flora, and analyzes the occurrence of dioecy among vascular plants classified jointly by growth form, floral (pollination) syndrome, and fruit (dispersal) syndrome. Dioecism is no more frequent in the arctic flora as a whole, but its incidence increases northward among woody plants. This increase is associated with an increase in the proportion of woody species having small, inconspicuous flowers, and not with the syndrome of fleshy or animal dispersed fruits. Within the floras of Alaska, California, and the Northeastern US, dioecy is markedly more frequent among woody plants and among plants having small, inconspicuous flowers, and that is the only strong statistical association of dioecy for the species of these floras. When genera and families are analyzed similarly, dioecy is also associated significantly with dispersal syndrome. Thus, among angiosperms, evidence currently does not support either an uniquely strong or exclusive association of dioecy with dispersal traits, as it does for gymnosperms (Givnish 1980). It is extremely desirable to analyze the occurrence of dioecy among taxa classified jointly by all relevant ecological traits, rather than analyzing marginal distributions.  相似文献

Abstract. To document the relationship between a plant's position in the canopy and its leaf nutrient content, leaf nitrogen and phosphorus were determined for 30 species growing in mature evergreen lowland rain forest at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. Species that grow either in the understory, midstory, or the canopy were selected. Species were further separated into three life forms: self-supporting monocots, self-supporting dicots, and climbers. Mass-based nutrient concentrations were expected to decrease with stature, as has been reported in studies of other forests. In fact, mass-based nitrogen and phosphorus did not vary significantly among the three adult-stature classes, although area-based values differed greatly: canopy plants averaged 60 % more nitrogen and 90 % more phosphorus per unit leaf area than understory plants. Differences in leaf characteristics were evident among the three life forms. Most notably, area-based phosphorus and leaf specific mass were lowest in climbers, intermediate in self-supporting dicots, and highest in self-supporting monocots. These results support the characterization of climbers as investing in inexpensive structures, perhaps in order to gain competitive advantage in light capture by allocating resources to maximize elongation rates.  相似文献

Distribution maps of the Greenland Onagraceae and synecological notes are presented. Four species are low–arctic, most often or exclusively growing in the lowland. The northernmost occurrence of the three of them, Epilobium palustre, E. hornemannii and E. lactiflorum is at "hot springs" between 69° and 70° N, while the fourth, Chamaenerion angustifolium , with the same northern limit, does not show this preference. E. anagallidifolium is even growing two degrees of latitude further north, and besides it is not limited to the lowland. E. arcticum has an arctic distribution between 69° and 80° N, while the seventh species, C. latifolium , is circumgreenlandic, being rare only in the most oceanic part of N Greenland. The occurrence of E. alsinifolium in Greenland has been rejected.  相似文献

The various uses of zirconium (Zr) in chemical and nuclear industries generate a potential risk of environmental contamination by this element. This study was performed on two agricultural soils, an acidic soil (A) and a clayey calcareous soil (B), collected in the Meuse/Haute Marne experimental site of the French National Agency for radioactive waste management (Andra). Distribution coefficients (K d), defined as the ratio of Zr concentration in the solid phase (mol/kg) to Zr concentration in the solution (mol/l), were obtained for both soils. Their high values (6,000 < K d < 30,000 l/kg) suggest a rapid and strong retention of Zr on the soil constituents. Chemical extractions (0.01 M CaCl2, Calcium chloride, 0.005 M DTPA, Diethylene Triamine Penta Acetic acid, and 0.1 M NaPP, Sodium Pyrophosphate) showed that organic matter had a high affinity for the added Zr. Soil–plant transfer experiments showed low plant uptake. A significant absorption of Zr was, however, observed for the two studied plants, tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L. cv. St. Pierre) and pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. “express”). For the most available forms of Zr (acetate and oxychloride), concentrations reached from 8 to 57 mg Zr/kg dry weight of roots. Zr is mainly accumulated in plant roots and is more absorbed by tomato than by pea. Zr bound to root cell walls (i.e. apoplastic Zr) concentrations, determined by HCl extraction, are significantly much lower than root absorbed Zr concentrations. Transfer to roots seemed to be more effective in the acidic soil and was strongly dependant on Zr added form.  相似文献

The ability of gramicidin to induce bilayer formation in lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) systems was investigated as a function of the conformation of the peptide. The conformation was varied by using different solvents to cosolubilize gramicidin and lipid. Using circular dichroism (CD), it was found that when codissolved in trifluoroethanol (TFE), after drying and subsequent hydration, gramicidin is mainly present in the single-stranded beta 6.3-helical configuration, whereas when using chloroform/methanol or ethanol as the solvent, it is proposed that the dominant conformation of gramicidin in the membrane is that of the double-stranded antiparallel dimer. Employing 31P NMR, the stoichiometry for bilayer formation was found to be 6 to 7 lipid molecules per gramicidin monomer, when samples were prepared from TFE, whereas a stoichiometry of 4 was found when chloroform/methanol or ethanol was the solvent. Upon heating the latter samples, a conversion was observed in the CD pattern toward that indicative of the beta 6.3-helical configuration. This change was accompanied by an increase in the extent of bilayer formation. Next, it was investigated whether the conformation of gramicidin and its ability to induce bilayer formation were dependent on the lipid acyl chain length. CD measurements of samples prepared from TFE indicated that gramicidin, independent of acyl chain length, was present in the beta 6.3-helical configuration but the intensity of the ellipticities at 218 nm increased with the length of the acyl chain. The extent of bilayer formation in these samples was found to be largely chain length independent.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
