This study examined the efficacy of marking wild populations of lampreys with visible implant elastomer (VIE) for 6–18 months to examine ammocoete movements using Cormack–Jolly–Seber (CJS) open‐population models. These methods were tested on two lamprey populations in different river systems. American brook lamprey Lethenteron appendix at Dyke Creek apparent survival (φ) was high in the summer and winter (c. 0·7), but declined after flow events in the spring and autumn. Sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus at Oquaga Creek φ in the top‐ranked models varied with stream location and time. Estimates of φ were similar to Dyke Creek during the summer (c. 0·7), but declined after flow events and remained low (c. 0·1) in winter. Open‐population models support current understanding of ammocoete movement, i.e. dispersal is driven by high‐flow events at certain times of the year. The present study provides a framework to study ammocoetes with VIE.  相似文献

The stability of a discrete body size dimorphism of sexually mature river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis from the River Endrick, Scotland, was examined over a 21 year period. Stable isotope analysis was used to test the hypothesis that the two size forms comprise individuals with differing migration and parasitic foraging strategies. Maturing river lamprey and the brook lamprey Lampetra planeri were trapped over 3 months each year in the periods 1983–1984 and 2004–2005. Brook lamprey catches and catches of both species combined showed no significant trend in catch rate with time. The catch rate of small body size river lamprey declined between 1983–1984 and 2004–2005 (although the difference did not reach statistical significance; P = 0·055). In contrast, there was a significant increase in the catch rate of the large body size river lamprey and as a consequence, a significant change in the relative proportion of each of the two river lamprey morphs over the study period. Analysis of the stable isotopes of C and N in muscle tissue showed that brook lamprey tissue derived its carbon from a freshwater source and had a δ13C more consistent with that of the River Endrick than with Loch Lomond. δ15N values for this species showed it to be feeding at the base of the food chain, consistent with filter feeding as an ammocoete. The large body size and the small body size river lamprey adults differed substantially in their δ13C values, with the small body size δ13C signature indicative of a freshwater carbon source and the large body size morph of a marine source. The small body size morph had a δ13C signature that was consistent with that of Loch Lomond powan Coregonus lavaretus suggesting that they share a common carbon source. The large body size morph was clearly feeding at a higher trophic level than the small body size morph. A single small body size river lamprey individual with typical morphology for that group, however, had C and N signatures that clustered with those of the large body size morphs. This individual had either migrated to sea to forage, as is typical for the species, or had been feeding on an anadromous fish with a strong marine C signature in fresh water. It is concluded that the body size dimorphism is indicative of a differential migration and foraging strategy in the parasitic phase of the life cycle of river lamprey at this site.  相似文献

1. Despite the ubiquity and abundance of water striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae) in temperate streams and rivers and their potential usefulness as sentinels in contaminant studies, little is known about their feeding ecology and lipid dynamics. 2. In this study we used stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) and elemental carbon to nitrogen ratios (C/N) to assess dietary habits and lipid content, respectively, for water striders. 3. To determine diet‐tissue fractionation factors, nymphs of the most common species in New Brunswick, Canada, Aquarius remigis were reared in the laboratory for 73 days and exhibited rapid isotopic turnover in response to a switch in diet (C half‐life = 1.5 days, N half‐life = 7.8 days). Their lipid content increased towards the end of the growing season and resulted in lower δ13C values. Diet‐tissue fractionation factors were established after correction of δ13C data for the confounding effect of de novo lipid synthesis (strider δ13Cadj– diet δ13Cadj = 0.1‰, strider δ15N – diet δ15N = 2.7‰). 4. Water striders from the majority of 45 stream sites (83%) in New Brunswick had less than 50% contribution of aquatic carbon to their diets but showed a gradual increase in the contribution of this carbon source to their diet with increasing stream size. 5. These data indicate that striders exhibit a strong connection to terrestrial carbon sources, making them important users of energy subsidies to streams from the surrounding catchment. However, this dependence on terrestrial organic matter may limit their utility as indicators of contamination of aquatic systems by heavy metals and other pollutants.  相似文献

Stable nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) isotopes of Atlantic sharpnose shark Rhizoprionodon terraenovae embryos and mothers were analysed. Embryos were generally enriched in 15N in all studied tissue relative to their mothers' tissue, with mean differences between mother and embryo δ15N (i.e. Δδ15N) being 1·4‰ for muscle, 1·7‰ for liver and 1·1‰ for cartilage. Embryo muscle and liver were enriched in 13C (both Δδ13C means = 1·5‰) and embryo cartilage was depleted (Δδ13C mean = ?1·01‰) relative to corresponding maternal tissues. While differences in δ15N and δ13C between mothers and their embryos were significant, muscle δ15N values indicated embryos to be within the range of values expected if they occupied a similar trophic position as their respective mothers. Positive linear relationships existed between embryo total length (LT) and Δδ15N for muscle and liver and embryo LT and Δδ13C for muscle, with those associations possibly resulting from physiological differences between smaller and larger embryos or differences associated with the known embryonic nutrition shift (yolk feeding to placental feeding) that occurs during the gestation of this placentatrophic species. Together these results suggest that at birth, the δ15N and δ13C values of R. terraenovae are likely higher than somewhat older neonates whose postpartum feeding habits have restructured their isotope profiles to reflect their postembryonic diet.  相似文献

To examine trophic dynamics over different size classes, an isotopic study of sailfish Istiophorus platypterus life‐history stages was carried out. Samples were collected from eastern Taiwan and the South China Sea during April 2009 and February 2012. A total of 263 samples (111–245 cm, lower jaw fork length, LLJFL) were examined for changes in trophic structure in relation to LLJFL by using stable isotope analysis of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). The δ15N values for I. platypterus ranged from 7·51 to 14·19‰ (mean ± s.d . = 12·06 ± 1·16‰) and the δ13C values ranged from ?22·04 to ?15·48‰ (mean ± s.d . = ?17·62 ± 1·10‰). The δ15N values were positively dependent on LLJFL (r2 = 0·377), whereas δ13C were negatively dependent on LLJFL (r2 = 0·063). There were significantly different seasonal changes in nitrogen and carbon isotopic concentration, but no significant differences in concentrations between eastern Taiwan and the South China Sea were reported. The trophic level (TL) of each LLJFL class was correlated, starting from 2·84 TL for size class I (LLJFL < 140 cm) and reaching 5·03 TL for size class VI (LLJFL > 221 cm). The mean ± s.d . TL was 4·43 ± 0·19 for all samples. The results reveal that I. platypterus occupies a wide range of trophic levels and different size classes occupy different trophic positions in the pelagic ecosystem.  相似文献

In this laboratory study, we quantified substrate selection by small (<50 mm) and large (100–150 mm) ammocoetes of the least brook lamprey (Lampetra aepyptera). In aquaria, ammocoetes were given a choice to burrow into six equally-available substrate types: small gravel (2.360–4.750 mm), coarse sand (0.500–1.400 mm), fine sand (0.125–0.500 mm), organic substrate (approximately 70% decomposing leaves/stems and organic sediment particles, and 30% silt and fine sand), an even mixture of silt, clay, and fine sand, and silt/clay (<0.063 mm). Fine sand was selected with a significantly higher probability than any other substrate. Fine sand habitat is limited in many streams, in part owing to geology, but also as a result of channelization and excessive silt/clay sedimentation, which is a conservation concern. Our results indicate that ammocoetes of least brook lampreys are habitat specialists that prefer fine sand habitat. Hence, availability of fine sand habitat may limit distributions and population sizes.  相似文献

This study investigated the trophic shift of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) thinlip grey mullet Liza ramada and golden grey mullet Liza aurata during their recruitment in a salt marsh located on the European Atlantic Ocean coast. Stable‐isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) of the fishes followed a pattern, having enrichments in 13C and 15N with increasing fork length (LF): δ13C in fishes < 30 mm ranged from ?19.5 to ?15.0‰, whereas in fishes > 30 mm δ13C ranged from ?15.8 to ?12.7‰, closer to the level in salt‐marsh food resources. Large differences between the δ15N values of mugilids and those of food sources (6·0‰ on average) showed that YOY are secondary consumers, similar to older individuals, when feeding in the salt marsh. YOY mugilids shift from browsing on pelagic prey to grazing on benthic resources from the salt marsh before reaching 30 mm LF. The results highlight the role of European salt marshes as nurseries for juvenile mugilids.  相似文献

The pattern of microhabitat preferences of Ukrainian brook lamprey Eudontomyzon mariae ammocoetes was examined in two rivers of central Poland: the Pilica River (the Vistula River basin) and the Grabia River (the Odra River basin). A comparison of abiotic factors of the rivers revealed differences in water speed and principal components: PC1 (determining gradient from decreasing medium sand to the increasing share of three fractions of gravel), PC2 (a gradient from the declining share of very coarse and coarse sand fractions to the growing content of fine sand) and PC3 (correlated with an increasing proportion of silt). The sites did not differ significantly in terms of water depth. Relative abundance and frequency of ammocoete occurrence in the Grabia River were higher than in the Pilica River. Only speed, PC1 and PC2 made a significant contribution to the prediction of larval occurrence. Eudontomyzon mariae larvae preferred substrata with a reduced amount of medium sand and increased content of gravel (PC1) as well as with a lower content of coarse sand and higher proportion of fine‐grained sand (PC2). The ammocoetes also preferred areas with a water speed of 0·2 m s?1 but avoided speeds ≥0·6 m s?1. The abundance of E. mariae was affected by water speed, as well as by all PCs. The mean ± s.e. optimal current speed was 0·265 ± 0·007 m s?1, while abundance decreased with increasing amounts of gravel (PC1) and increased with increasing amounts of fine sand and silt in the bottom substratum (PC2 and PC3). Comparison of ammocoete microhabitat use in the Pilica and Grabia Rivers showed the lack of differences in distribution in the preferred values of current speed, PC1 and PC2.  相似文献

Changes in the isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N) in biofilm, macro‐invertebrates and resident salmonids were used to characterize temporal dynamics of marine derived nutrients (MDNs) incorporation between stream reaches with and without MDN inputs. Five Atlantic rivers were chosen to represent contrasting MDN subsidies: four rivers with considerable numbers of anadromous fishes; one river with little MDN input. Rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax, alewife Alosa pseudoharengus, sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, were the primary anadromous species for the sampled rivers. Regardless of the spatial resolution or the pathway of incorporation, annual nutrient pulses from spawning anadromous fishes had a positive effect on isotopic enrichment at all trophic levels (biofilm, 1·2–5·4‰; macro‐invertebrates, 0·0–6·8‰; fish, 1·2–2·6‰). Community‐wide niche space shifted toward the marine‐nutrient source, but the total ecological niche space did not always increase with MDN inputs. The time‐integrated marine‐nutrient resource contribution to the diet of S. salar parr and brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis ranged between 16·3 and 36·0% during anadromous fish‐spawning periods. The high degree of spatio‐temporal heterogeneity in marine‐nutrient subsidies from anadromous fishes lead to both direct and indirect pathways of MDN incorporation into stream food webs. This suggests that organisms at many trophic levels derive a substantial proportion of their energy from marine resources when present. The current trend of declining anadromous fish populations means fewer nutrient‐rich marine subsidies being delivered to rivers, diminishing the ability to sustain elevated riverine productivity.  相似文献

To analyze the stable isotope ratios of small‐bodied invertebrates, the entire animal is typically sacrificed and processed, which is problematic for threatened or endangered species. Appendages which are regenerated could be used to infer whole‐body isotope ratios, but differences in turnover rates and isotopic signatures among tissues may confound such an approach. We tested the hypothesis that the δ13C and δ15N of whole‐body tissue for freshwater amphipods could be predicted from the δ13C and δ15N of walking legs, with the goal of estimating body δ13C and δ15N of Gammarus acherondytes, a United States federally endangered species. To test this, we analyzed the δ13C and δ15N of walking legs and bodies of five species of amphipods from geographically distant areas (Idaho, Illinois, and Washington) in the United States. The general relationships of whole‐body isotope ratios of C and N as a function of leg isotope ratios were linear and had slopes of one. In the range of the data, leg δ13C was slightly lower than body δ13C, indicating some tissue‐specific fractionation, while δ15N was similar for legs and bodies. Our data suggest that legs can be used to predict body isotope ratios in freshwater amphipods. This approach provides an additional tool to help researchers understand the biology of small, endangered invertebrates without sacrificing individuals. This is especially useful in cave ecosystems where populations are naturally sparse.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the isotopic‐turnover rate (RIT) and trophic‐discrimination factor (FTD) in muscle tissues of Lebranche mullet Mugil liza fed an experimental diet (δ13C = ?27·1‰; δ15N = 1·0‰). Juvenile M. liza exhibited a relatively fast RIT, with a half‐life (t50) of only 16 and 14 days for δ13C and δ15N respectively and a nearly complete isotopic turnover (t95) of 68 and 60 days for δ13C and δ15N.  相似文献

Release‐recapture experiments were conducted to examine temporal changes of the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) ratios in the muscle tissue of artificially produced Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, juveniles. About 9000 juveniles (mean ± s .d . 43·3 ± 5·2 mm in standard length and 1·07 ± 0·37 g, n = 15) were released in each of three coastal areas: Chojagasaki, Arasaki and Jogashima with different geographical conditions, along Sagami Bay, Pacific coast of central Japan. Recapture efforts were made on 4, 11, 18, 40 and 55 days after the release. The stable isotope ratios, RNA:DNA ratio, stomach content mass (per body mass Msc) and condition factor (K) of recaptured individuals were measured. The mean ± s .d . δ13C and δ15N values (n = 15) were ?18·3 ± 0·2‰ and 12·2 ± 0·2‰, respectively at the release. Wild Japanese flounder juveniles were captured only in Chojagasaki, and the δ13C and δ15N values (n = 6) were ?14·0 ± 0·4‰ and 13·2 ± 0·7‰, respectively; these values were considered to represent the wild diet. Nutritional conditions of the released and recaptured juveniles as determined by the RNA : DNA ratio, MSC and K were indicated to be the best in Chojagasaki, in which the stable isotope ratios gradually shifted towards and reached the wild values within 40 days. This result along with stomach content analyses suggested that the released juveniles had acquired a wild feeding habit. In Arasaki and Jogashima, nutritional conditions of the recaptured juveniles were poorer, with no clear changes in the stable isotope ratios. Greatly varied stable isotope ratio values were observed in the juveniles recaptured in Chojagasaki 11 days after the release, ranging from the release levels to the wild levels. The extent of changes in the stable isotope ratios had a positive correlation to the RNA : DNA ratio and K of these juveniles (r = 0·87, n = 10 and r = 0·83, n = 18, respectively). The analyses of stable isotope ratios coupled with nutritional condition were considered to be an effective tool to examine post‐release feeding adaptation of Japanese flounder juveniles.  相似文献

Although confined to fresh water, non‐parasitic species of lampreys and the landlocked parasitic sea lamprey, all of which were derived relatively recently from anadromous ancestors, still develop chloride cells, whose function in their ancestors was for osmoregulation in marine waters during the adult parasitic phase. In contrast, such cells are not developed by the non‐parasitic least brook lamprey Lampetra aepyptera, which has been separated from its ancestor for >2 million years, nor by the freshwater parasitic species of the genus Ichthyomyzon. The length of time that a non‐parasitic species or landlocked parasitic form or species has spent in fresh water is thus considered the overriding factor determining whether chloride cells are developed by those lampreys.  相似文献

Aim The hair of grazers provides an isotopic record of environmental and nutritional signals. Here, we assess the effect of altitude on the carbon and nitrogen isotope composition of the hair of ruminant grazers and its relation to grassland vegetation, to evaluate the use of hair isotope data for ecosystem reconstruction, animal nutritional ecology and biogeochemical studies in montane environments. Location European Alps. Methods We sampled grassland vegetation (pure C3) and the hair of ruminants along an altitudinal gradient (400–2500 m), and analysed their isotope composition (δ13C and δ15N). Results were compared with published effects of altitude on 13C in C3 plants at the species level and on 15N at the community level. The study was complemented with a comparison of diet and hair isotope composition in ruminants held in confinement. Results δ13C of hair increased (c. 1.1‰ km−1) and δ15N decreased (c. 1.1‰ km−1) with altitude. The same changes occurred in local grassland vegetation, and in regional to global grassland data sets. Offsets between hair and vegetation 13C or 15N (‘diet–hair shift’) were independent of altitude. Sheep (Ovis aries) and cattle (Bos taurus) exhibited a 13C shift near +3‰, but that of goats (Capra hircus) was larger (+4.2‰) in alpine environments and in confinement. The diet–hair shift for 15N was more variable (+2.1 to +3.6‰). Main conclusions Grazer hair provides a faithful spatially and temporally integrated record of grassland isotope composition, useful for ecosystem and environment reconstruction. The effect of altitude on hair 15N is important for studies of trophic relationships: an altitude shift of 2000 m produced the same effect in hair 15N as would a shift from an animal tissue‐based to a plant‐based diet. The similarity of altitude effects on δ13C of individual plant species, vegetation and hair indicates that the effect of altitude on species‐level ‘intrinsic water use efficiency’ scales up linearly to the community and landscape level.  相似文献

We report isotopic data (δ2H, δ18O n = 196; δ13C, δ15N n = 142; δ34S n = 85) from human hair and drinking water (δ2H, δ18O n = 67) collected across China, India, Mongolia, and Pakistan. Hair isotope ratios reflected the large environmental isotopic gradients and dietary differences. Geographic information was recorded in H and O and to a lesser extent, S isotopes. H and O data were entered into a recently developed model describing the relationship between the H and O isotope composition of human hair and drinking water in modern USA and pre‐globalized populations. This has anthropological and forensic applications including reconstructing environment and diet in modern and ancient human hair. However, it has not been applied to a modern population outside of the USA, where we expect different diet. Relationships between H and O isotope ratios in drinking water and hair of modern human populations in Asia were different to both modern USA and pre‐globalized populations. However, the Asian dataset was closer to the modern USA than to pre‐globalized populations. Model parameters suggested slightly higher consumption of locally producedfoods in our sampled population than modern USA residents, but lower than pre‐globalized populations. The degree of in vivo amino acid synthesis was comparable to both the modern USA and pre‐globalized populations. C isotope ratios reflected the predominantly C3‐based regional agriculture and C4 consumption in northernChina. C, N, and S isotope ratios supported marine food consumption in some coastal locales. N isotope ratios suggested a relatively low consumption of animal‐derived products compared to western populations. Am J Phys Anthropol 2010. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The stable isotope values for a range of size classes of Hyporhamphus regularis ardelio from Moreton Bay, south‐east Australia were determined. There was a positive linear relationship between δ13C and standard length (LS)(δ13C = 0·034 LS ? 16·23; r2 = 0·78). δ13C ranged from ?8·48 to ?17·29‰ with the smallest size class (50 mm LS) being on average 1·04‰ enriched with respect to that of zooplankton (Temora turbinata) and 7·97‰ depleted compared to Zostera capricorni. δ13C was positively correlated with LS(P < 0·01)(more enriched with increasing LS) with those fish of the largest size class (225 mm LS) being 9·86 and 0·84‰ enriched than T. turbinata and Z. capricorni, respectively. There was no detectable trend in δ15N values with LS(P > 0·01) with δ15N, ranging from 9·18 to 11·00‰. Fish of all size classes were on average 2·32 and 7·63‰ more enriched than zooplankton and seagrass, respectively. Carbon isotope data indicate that H. r. ardelio commence life as carnivores and change to a diet in which seagrass is the primary carbon source. The dependence on animal matter, however, is always present. Due to the low percentage of nitrogen in Z. capricorni(2·5%) compared to zooplankton (9·1%) it appears that nitrogen from zooplankton is necessary throughout their life history with the carbon requirements for these fish coming chiefly from Z. capricorni.  相似文献

Abstract: While atmospheric species of bromeliads have narrow leaves, densely covered with water‐absorbing trichomes throughout their life cycles, many tank bromeliads with broad leaves, forming phytotelmata, go through an atmospheric juvenile phase. The effect of the different habits and the phase change in tank‐forming bromeliads on water and nutrient relations was investigated by analysing the relationship between plant size, C/N ratios and the natural abundance of 13C and 15N in five epiphytic bromeliad species or morphospecies of a humid montane forest in Xalapa, Mexico. The atmospheric species Tillandsia juncea and T. butzii exhibited full crassulacean acid metabolism, with δ13C values (mean ‐ 15.3 ‰ and ‐ 14.7 ‰, respectively) independent of size. In Tillandsia species with C3 photosynthesis, δ13C decreased with increasing plant size, indicating stronger drought stress in juveniles. The increase of the C/N ratio with size suggests that, at least in heteroblastic bromeliads, the availability of water is more limiting during early growth, and that limitations of nitrogen supply become more important later on, when water stored in the tank helps to bridge dry periods, reducing water shortage. δ15N values of the two atmospheric species were very negative (‐ 12.6 ‰ and ‐ 12.2 ‰, respectively) and did not change with plant size. Tank‐forming bromeliads had less negative δ15N values (c ‐ 6 ‰), and, in species with atmospheric juveniles and tank‐forming adults, δ15N values increased significantly with plant size. These differences do not appear to be an effect of the isotopic composition of N sources, but rather reflect N availability and limitation and stress‐induced changes in 15N discrimination.  相似文献

Synopsis We observed spawning American brook lamprey, Lampetra appendix, in coldwater streams in Minnesota to assess various aspects of their spawning behavior and spawning habitat requirements. Spawning occurred during April and May, at water temperatures ranging from 8.7 to 15.5°C. Average adult lamprey length and mass differed significantly among streams, but there were no significant differences in length or mass between males and females. Overall sex ratio was 1:1, although one stream had significantly more males than females and one stream held significantly more females. Lampreys spawned in groups of 2–14 individuals, averaging 4.2 adults per nest across all streams. Nests were constructed in gravel and cobble substrate just upstream of riffles, spaced at an average density of three nests m−2. The typical nest was 16 cm in diameter in water 31 cm deep with a bottom current velocity of 14 cm s−1, and was excavated to a depth of 4 cm below the stream bottom; however, some nest characteristics varied significantly in a few streams. Nests were larger in streams with larger spawning groups, deeper water, and slower current velocities. American brook lamprey exhibited spawning behaviors and spawning habitat requirements similar to those of other species of lamprey in North America.  相似文献
