Transverse sections of otoliths from Atlantic cod Gadus morhua from the Baltic Sea revealed narrow growth increments. The widths of these increments corresponded to daily increments from fish with known otolith growth rates and were therefore assumed to be daily increments. They exhibited a distinct pattern with increasing distance from the primary primordium. A series of zones with clearly distinguishable increments, first with increasing then with decreasing widths in a dome‐shaped pattern, were separated by zones where no regular increment structure was visible. Increment width seemed to be tightly coupled to the annual cycle in environmental temperature at a depth of 30–60 m, where G. morhua predominantly reside. Between 135 and 200 increments occurred within the different zones, with a non‐significant trend towards lower increment numbers and widths with distance from the primary primordium of the otolith. Increment formation apparently ceased at temperatures < 5–6° C, but growth during the cold months corresponded closely with estimated growth rates. The increment patterns seemed to reflect annual cycles in environmental temperature, and the count of the increment cycles may thus be a promising tool for the determination of the true age of Baltic G. morhua.  相似文献

Bromine was found to accumulate in otoliths of Norwegian coastal Cod Gadus morhua that were reared under known conditions. Despite the fact that the Cod were moved from one rearing environment to another, causing marked changes in some otolith elemental concentrations, bromine appeared to accumulate continuously along certain growth axes as revealed by 2-D elemental mapping. In contrast, North Sea and Baltic Sea Cod showed little to no patterning in Br. We suggest that Br uptake in otoliths may be under physiological and genetic control, and as such, may prove useful as a stock identification tool.  相似文献

Fish otoliths' chronometric properties make them useful for age and growth rate estimation in fisheries management. For the Eastern Baltic Sea cod stock (Gadus morhua), unclear seasonal growth zones in otoliths have resulted in unreliable age and growth information. Here, a new age estimation method based on seasonal patterns in trace elemental otolith incorporation was tested for the first time and compared with the traditional method of visually counting growth zones, using otoliths from the Baltic and North seas. Various trace elemental ratios, linked to fish metabolic activity (higher in summer) or external environment (migration to colder, deeper habitats with higher salinity in winter), were tested for age estimation based on assessing their seasonal variations in concentration. Mg:Ca and P:Ca, both proxies for growth and metabolic activity, showed greatest seasonality and therefore have the best potential to be used as chemical clocks. Otolith image readability was significantly lower in the Baltic than in the North Sea. The chemical (novel) method had an overall greater precision and percentage agreement among readers (11.2%, 74.0%) than the visual (traditional) method (23.1%, 51.0%). Visual readers generally selected more highly contrasting zones as annuli whereas the chemical readers identified brighter regions within the first two annuli and darker zones thereafter. Visual estimates produced significantly higher, more variable ages than did the chemical ones. Based on the analyses in our study, we suggest that otolith microchemistry is a promising alternative ageing method for fish populations difficult to age, such as the Eastern Baltic cod.  相似文献

The disappearance of larger individuals and the decrease in individual body condition suffered by Atlantic cod Gadus morhua in the eastern Baltic during the past two decades can be expected to affect the stock reproductive output. To investigate this, female G. morhua were collected during the spawning and pre‐spawning period in 2015?2016. The current individual potential fecundity (FP) of eastern Baltic G. morhua was estimated and analysed in relation to total length (LT) and indices of nutritional status such as body condition (K) and hepato‐somatic index (IH) using generalized linear models. In addition, the current prevalence of atresia and its potential relation to K were investigated. Moreover, a calibration curve to estimate FP from oocyte diameter, based on the autodiametric oocyte counting method, was established for the first time for eastern Baltic G. morhua and can be used for future fecundity studies on this stock. The results showed that FP was mainly positively related to fish length, but K and IH also contributed significantly to the variation in FP. The model predicted that fish with K = 1·2 have a FP 51% higher than fish of the same LT with K = 0·8. The prevalence of fecundity regulation by atresia was 5·8%, but it was found only in fish in the pre‐spawning maturity stage and with low K. Temporal changes in biological features such as the length composition and individual body condition of eastern Baltic G. morhua, should be accounted for when estimating stock reproductive potential.  相似文献

This study presents the diet composition of western Baltic cod Gadus morhua based on 3150 stomachs sampled year-round between 2016 and 2017 using angling, gillnetting and bottom trawling, which enhanced the spatio-temporal coverage of cod habitats. Cod diet composition in shallow areas (<20 m depth) was dominated by benthic invertebrate species, mainly the common shore crab Carcinus maneas. Compared to historic diet data from the 1960s and 1980s (limited to depth >20 m), the contribution of herring Clupea harengus decreased and round goby Neogobius melanostomus occurred as a new prey species. Statistical modelling revealed significant relationships between diet composition, catch depth, fish length and season. Generalized additive modelling identified a negative relationship between catch depth and stomach content weight, suggesting reduced food intake in winter when cod use deeper areas for spawning and during peak summer when cod tend to avoid high water temperatures. The results of this study highlight the importance of shallow coastal areas as major feeding habitats of adult cod in the western Baltic Sea, which were previously unknown because samples were restricted to deeper trawlable areas. The results strongly suggest that historic stomach analyses overestimated the role of forage fish and underestimated the role of invertebrate prey. Eventually, this study shows the importance of a comprehensive habitat coverage for unbiased stomach sampling programmes to provide a more reliable estimation of top predator diet, a key information for food web analyses and multispecies models.  相似文献

The cod, Gadus morhua, is a common and abundant demersal fish in the White Sea coastal zone. The published data on the maximum age of White Sea cod still requires additional documentation, because some authors have noted difficulties in age determination by otoliths of large specimens. To obtain accurate data on the longevity of this species in the White Sea, an image analysis of thin‐sections of otoliths was made for age estimation. Research surveys in the Chupa Inlet and adjacent waters of the Kandalaksha Bay were conducted in June to August from 2007 to 2013. The five largest specimens of a total of 3564 captured fish were selected for age determination. Age of these largest individuals ranged between 7 and 12 years, total length and weight varied from 60.2 to 77.0 cm and from 2.4 to 6.1 kg, respectively. According to the data, maximal White Sea cod longevity is greater than in previously published data, and demonstrates similar longevity to conspecifics from the Baltic and North seas, whereas its life cycle is much shorter than cod from the Northeast Arctic, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and Labrador stocks.  相似文献

The morphological features of the saccular otoliths of Tilapia guineensis are given. Procedure for treating the otoliths for observation of growth rings is described. Stable isotope analysis of Baltic Sea cod from the Bornholm Sea (ICES‐SD 25) and western Baltic (Belt Sea, ICES‐SD 22) revealed significant differences in the δ15N and δ13C values of the dorsal muscle, as well as in the δ18O values of otoliths. The method pledges to become especially appropriate to the Baltic due to the high variability in oxygen isotope ratios associated with its estuarine nature.  相似文献

The periodicity of otolith growth increments (opaque and translucent zones) from adult red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) was examined through a mark and recapture study (2005–2010), and laboratory holding of hatchery reared red snapper over a 2 year period (2002–2004). Wild red snapper (n = 295) were caught hook-and-line, marked with anchor tags, injected with oxytetracycline dihydrate (OTC), and released in the Gulf of Mexico 15–40 km south of Dauphin Island, Alabama. Marked fish were recaptured up to 2.8 years after release (n = 35) and sagittal otoliths were dissected, sectioned and examined under white and blue-violet light. The number of opaque growth zones past the OTC mark was compared to time at liberty for each fish and supported an annual periodicity of growth increment formation. Also, most (87%) of the hatchery reared fish showed two opaque zones that supported an annual increment formation rate. However, an unusual timing of opaque zone formation was shown for mark-recaptured fish. Based on known timing of OTC marking, otoliths from mark-recapture fish showed opaque zone formation from late summer (August) to early winter (December). This fall formation of opaque zones is in contrast to previous studies and its timing may relate to the end of spawning for this species.  相似文献

Otoliths of ocean-pen reared cod, Gadus morhua, provide a unique opportunity to examine the lifetime history of the fish. Here we report 18 analyses of such otoliths on seasonal (winter and summer) stable oxygen and carbon isotope ratios. The calculated isotopic temperatures from otoliths of reared cod were essentially in agreement with the temperature record during rearing, suggesting that temperature is a dominant factor in the precipitation of otolith aragonite. Carbon isotope ratios increased with age and leveled off at 4 years old, presumed to correlate with sexual maturity of cod. As compared with otoliths of wild-caught cod, significant differences were found in isotope variation and the correlation between 13C and 18O. These differences were probably attributable to the different environmental constraints and food supply.  相似文献

The determination of U and Th was carried out on pooled samples of muscle tissue of cod (Gadus morhua), herring (Clupea harengus), sprat (Sprattus sprattus) and some other species of fish caught in 1981 in the southern Baltic. The levels of U obtained in the present study are generally within the ranges presented by other authors for fish from different aquatic regions of the world. The concentrations of U are similar to those found for Th in Baltic fish analysed. The concentration factors CFU(Th), discrimination factors DFU/Th and Th/U ratios (by weight) were calculated and discussed. These coefficients were also compared with values determined in other Baltic organisms. Transfer of U and Th along a food chain from potential prey (diet) to fish as predator (consumer) was quantified with a transfer factor.  相似文献

Wild adult specimens of the Peruvian anchovy Engraulis ringens were captured and reared to validate the daily periodicity of otolith microincrement formation. The postcapture stress generated spontaneous spawning, making it possible to conduct a rearing trial on larvae first in an artificial nutrient‐enriched system (ANES) for 52 days followed by an artificial feeding regime in a culture tank until day 115 post‐hatch. Microincrements of the sagittal otoliths of sacrificed juveniles [mean ± s.d. total length (LT) = 5·13 ± 0·37 cm, range 5–6 cm; c.v. = 7·5%] showed very distinct light and dark zones. The slope of the relationship between the total number of increments after the hatch check and days elapsed after hatching was not significantly different from 1. The transfer from ANES to the artificial feeding regime induced a mark in the sagittal otoliths. The number of microincrements after this induced mark coincided with the number of days elapsed after the transfer date. In parallel experiments, adult E. ringens (mean ± s.d. LT = 14·92 ± 0·55 cm, range 13–16 cm) were exposed to one of two fluorescent marking immersion treatments with either alizarin red S (ARS; 25 mg l?1 per 6 h) or oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC; 200 mg l?1 per 10 h). The microincrements between fluorescent bands were distinct, ranging from 0·89 to 2·75 µm (mean ± s.d. =1·43 ± 0·28 µm; c.v. = 32%) and from 0·71 to 2·89 µm (1·53 ± 0·27 µm; c.v. = 35%) for ARS and OTC, respectively. The relationship between the number of microincrements between marks and the number of elapsed days for ARS and OCT treatments indicated that there was a significant correspondence between the number of increases observed and the number of days. Hence, daily microincrements of otoliths of E. ringens are likely to be formed in juveniles and adults under natural conditions.  相似文献

Nine out of 22 microsatellite primers tested were successfully amplified on three samples of cod Gadus morhua L. (two contemporary and one archived otolith samples). All loci were polymorphic (5–23 alleles/locus). The average observed heterozygosity across loci and samples was 0.625, ranging from 0.294 to 0.895 at each locus. All loci were under Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, except PGmo56 that showed significant excess of heterozygotes in all studied samples. The isolated loci were suitable for degraded DNA and therefore useful for conducting a long‐term temporal study with DNA obtained from archived otoliths of cod.  相似文献

Juvenile mulloway Argyrosomus japonicus (54·6 ± 4·6 mm total length, mean ±  s . e .) were immersed in a range of oxytetracycline (OTC) solutions ranging between 0–600 mg l−1 in salinities of 5 (diluted sea water) and 35 (undiluted sea water), and alizarin complexone (ALC) solutions ranging between 0–60 mg l−1 in undiluted sea water, for 6, 12 and 24 h. Optimal marking conditions were 600 mg l−1 OTC for 24 h in a salinity of 5, and 30 mg l−1 ALC for 12 h respectively. Mark quality (MQ) was assessed using a score of 0–3 in both otoliths and anal fin spines, with a score >2 found to be acceptable for adequate mark identification. Acceptable marks were not produced using OTC in undiluted sea water. Immersion in OTC or ALC, or reduced salinity had no effect on survival relative to controls. Transverse sections of vertebrae from the ALC and OTC treatments with the highest otolith mark quality showed no discrete marks. Optimal marking techniques were used to produce double marks with a 3 day interval between marking, and marking techniques were applied to 130 000 juvenile mulloway in batch mode with minimal mortality. A numerical model of the chemical behaviour of OTC in sea water describes the decline of available OTC in increasing salinity, so that a species' salinity tolerance and successful marking can be optimized.  相似文献

This study examined the relationship between otolith size and growth in juvenile cod (Gadus morhua L.). Two groups of juvenile cod were reared under different food ration and temperature regimes to obtain fish of similar somatic size but with different sized otoliths. The two groups were subjected to alternating temperature regimes and intermediate ration levels. Large otoliths grew significantly faster than the small ones and variation between individuals was extensive. The ratio of otolith growth during cold and warm temperature exposure did not differ between groups, and the observed growth pattern is therefore not attributable to differential growth within individual temperature periods. The ratio decreased with otolith size, presumably as a result of ontogenetic decrease in otolith protein composition. These results suggest that processes coupled to the metabolic rate of the endolymphatic epithelium are the key driver behind otolith growth.  相似文献

Numbers of luminous bacteria were counted at three stations of the brackish water ecosystem of the western Baltic Sea from July 1985 to July 1986. Additional samples were taken during three cruises from stations at the North Atlantic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea and adjacent marine areas. — In Kiel Bight (western Baltic) values varied between 0 and 68,000 luminous cfu 1−1. With exception of the coastal station a distinct seasonal distribution pattern was shown in a water depth of 20 m: high numbers found in summer were opposed to low numbers in winter, the peaks being rather high in comparison to those of other areas. Statistical analysis showed that the results of 20 m were significantly different from those of 0 and 10 m depth; however, there was no correlation with temperature and salinity. Taxonomic studies revealed that the population consisted primarily of the genus Photobacterium. — The optimum of salinity was not a brackish but a marine one and was about 30% for the majority of the strains tested. A smaller number of strains grew best at a salinity between 10 and 15%. Optima of temperature ranged from 15 to 20 °C for most of the test strains. — Taxonomic analysis was also performed with luminous strains from marine areas adjacent to the western Baltic Sea, Photobacterium being the dominant genus here, too. Luminous bacteria were also enriched from the external surface and the gut contents of whitings (Merlangius merlangus) and cods (Gadus morhua). A model is proposed which explains the distribution pattern found. According to this, the gut-dwelling luminous bacteria are transported by their hosts from the North Sea into the western Baltic Sea. Here they are released into the environment, thus inhabiting another niche.  相似文献

Accurate age estimation is important for stock assessment and management. The importance of reliable ageing is emphasized by the impending analytical assessment of whiting (Merlangius merlangus) in the Baltic Sea. Whiting is a top predator in the western Baltic Sea, where it is fished commercially although less extensively compared to the North Sea. Although the species is considered one of the most difficult gadoids to age, few efforts have been made to shed light on the ageing problems. The aim of the present study was to identify and validate the 1st winter ring and to examine the visibility of the subsequent winter rings. Microstructure analysis was used to confirm the 1st winter ring. Additionally, otolith growth trajectories were obtained, confirming the allometric growth as seen in many fish species. The method for ageing of whole otoliths presented in this study can be directly implemented in future ageing of whiting otoliths from the Baltic Sea – and potentially also adjacent areas where the conspecifics have similar growth rates.  相似文献

In 2007 the alien invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz 1865 was recorded for the first time in the Bornholm Basin, an area which serves as important spawning ground for Baltic fish stocks. Since M. leidyi is capable of preying upon early life stages of fish and further might act as food competitor for fish larvae, it is of major concern to investigate the potential threat that this non-indigenous species poses to the pelagic ecosystem of the Baltic Sea. The present study investigates the temporal and spatial overlap of M. leidyi with eggs and larvae of Baltic cod (Gadus morhua L.) and sprat (Sprattus sprattus L.) in order to assess the potential impact of this new invader on two of the most important Baltic fish stocks. Results show variable inter-seasonal distribution and overlap dynamics and thus different seasonal threat-scenarios for the early life stages of cod and sprat. The spatial overlap between M. leidyi and ichthyoplankton was low for most of the period observed, and we conclude that M. leidyi presently does not have a strong impact. However, we detected situations with high overlaps, e.g. for sprat larvae and cod eggs in spring. As the population dynamics of M. leidyi in the central Baltic are not yet fully understood, a future population explosion of the alien ctenophore with possible effects on fish recruitment cannot be ruled out. Furthermore, a possible shift in peak spawning of cod to the early season, when ctenophore abundances were relatively high, might increase the impact of M. leidyi on cod.  相似文献
