The current distribution of the Neotropical ichthyofauna has been widely affected by the main geological events that occurred in South and Central America. However, robust biogeographic information is still scarce or absent for most fish families. The biogeographic relationships of the most diverse anablepid genus, Jenynsia, are herein analysed, using temporal and spatial approaches based on a total evidence dataset, including 167 morphological characters and seven nuclear genes, totalling 6075?bp. A time calibrated analysis recovered the origin of Jenynsia at the Miocene and the diversification of its two subgenera between the Late Miocene and Early Pliocene. This result combined with the analysis of reconstruction of ancestral states indicates that the ancestor of Jenynsia colonized the Paranean Sea, and the current distribution of the species of the genus is probably a result of geological events, including: (1) ancient connections between Iguaçu and upper Uruguay River basins; (2) sea level variation along the Pliocene in the South American Atlantic coast; and (3) the decrease of the Paranean Sea along the Pliocene and Pleistocene.  相似文献

The Jenynsia lineata species complex comprises J. lineata from Montevideo, Uruguay and Jenynsia multidentata, from coastal basins of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina up to 1200 m a.s.l. Taxonomic divisions within this group were tested using three different species delimitation methods, which found the two existing names to be synonyms and revealed a new cryptic species. Jenynsia darwini sp. nov. is distinguished from all congeners by having a unique combination of character states, including the shape of the dorsal postcleithrum (three times higher than wide v. less than two times higher than wide) and female colour pattern in the half of the caudal peduncle with rows of chromatophores segmented in unaligned spots (v. aligned spots forming lines). The new species also differs from J. lineata by having 26 nucleotide substitutions in the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (coI). Phylogenetic analysis of the genus based on morphological characters proposed by previous studies corroborates monophyly of the subgenera Plesiojenynsia and Jenynsia, with the new species being allocated to the subgenus Jenynsia as the sister group of J. lineata.  相似文献

This is the first record of the genus Jenynsia in the High Andean Plateau (HAP). It has been found at elevations between 3400 and 3900 m in three endorreheic systems: Salar Antofalla, Antofagasta de la Sierra and El Peñón, northwestern Argentina, South America. This finding increases the number of known HAP fish genera to five. Furthermore, in contrast to the old Andean species-rich genus Orestias, the presence of Jenynsia obscura populations in young high-altitude, non-marine saline wetlands reported here supports a recent dispersal into the HAP.  相似文献

Gymnocharacinus bergi is a stenothermal endangered fish only found in the headwaters of a thermal stream within the temperate Somuncurá Plateau (Patagonia, Argentina). In spite of the presence of other fish species in the Valcheta Stream basin, none of these has been found at the headwaters. Temperature and salinity cannot account for the absence of extremely eurytopic Cnesterodon and Jenynsia. In addition, there is no evidence of diet overlapping or territory defence between these species and G. bergi. Therefore, we hypothesise that agonistic behaviour might be related to G. bergi's isolation. Experiments were performed in order to analyse interspecific interaction between G. bergi and individuals of the other two species. Cnesterodon decemmaculatus showed a submissive behaviour while Jenynsia multidentata was clearly aggressive. G. bergi decreased its aggressive behaviour towards C. decemmaculatus throughout the experiment. However, when placed with J. multidentata, its aggressive behaviour did not diminish. We suggest that the characteristics of the agonistic behaviour displayed by J. multidentata, opposite from those displayed by C. decemmaculatus, might account for the absence of J. multidentata in G. bergi's present habitat. With respect to C. decemmaculatus, other factors such as its low counter current swimming ability might play a major role in this phenomenon.  相似文献

In the four-eyed fish, Anableps (Atheriniformes, Anablepidae), eggs are fertilized and embryos develop to term within the ovarian follicles. Development is highly matrotrophic. During gestation, the largest term embryo of A. anableps examined had grown to a total length of 51 mm and attained a dry weight of 149 mg. The postfertilization weight increase is 298,000%. The largest term embryo of A. dowi examined had grown to a total length of 77 mm and attained a dry weight of 910 mg. The postfertilization weight increase is 843,000%. Embryonic weight increases result from nutrient transfer across the follicular placenta. This structure is formed by apposition of the maternal follicular epithelium to absorptive surface cells of the embryo's pericardial trophoderm. The latter, a ventral ramification of the pericardial somatopleure, replaces the yolk sac during early gestation. The external surface of the pericardial trophoderm develops hemispherical projections, termed vascular bulbs. Within each bulb, the vascular plexus of the trophoderm expands to form a blood sinus. Cells of the external surface of the bulbs possess microplicae. Microvilli are absent. During middle to late gestation, the juxtaembryonic follicular epithelium differentiates into two regions. One region consists of shallow, pitlike depressions within which vascular bulbs interdigitate in a “ball and socket” arrangement. Follicular pits are formed by the curvilinear distortion of the apical surfaces of follicle cells. The second region in contact with the dorsal and lateral surfaces of the embryo, is comprised of villous extensions of the hypertrophied follicular epithelium. In both regions, follicle cells appear to constitute a transporting rather than a secretory epithlium. In terms of percentage of weight increase, the follicular placenta of Anableps appears to be the most efficient adaptation for maternal-embryonic nutrient transfer in teleost fishes and closely approaches the efficiency (1.2 × 106%) of oophagy and embryonic cannibalism in lamnoid sharks.  相似文献

The central provinces of Argentina are characterized by the presence of a high number of shallow lakes, located in endorheic basins, many of which have elevated salinities as well as eutrophic or hypereutrophic condition. The zooplankton of four saline shallow lakes of the province of La Pampa was studied on a monthly basis during a 2‐year period to determine its temporal and spatial variation. The surface of these shallow lakes (<2.5 m depth) varied between 56.8 and 215.9 ha, and some have from 8.4 to 20.8 g · l–1. The more saline lakes have “clear” water and the less saline lakes “turbid” water. Fishes, Jenynsia multidentata , were present in only two lakes during the last two months of the studied period. The zooplankton was composed of 17 taxa of Rotifera, 5 taxa of Cladocera and 4 taxa of Copepoda. The low diversity and the faunistic composition are characteristic of saline environments. Although the studied lakes share 38% of the species, the faunistic similarity was higher between the two least saline lakes. The lowest diversity was found in the two most saline lakes. All four shallow lakes were characterized by their very high zooplankton density, especially in the least saline lakes (<80000 ind · l–1). The abundance is significantly correlated with the water transparency but not with salinity. The zooplankton temporal variation was characterized by the alternation of macro‐ and microzooplankton, probably regulated by competition and intrazooplanktonic predation. In each lake, the spatial abundance distribution of the macro‐ and microzooplankton was homogeneous. It was related to the shallow depht of the lakes and their polymictic condition. The Scheffer model on alternative states in shallow lakes acknowledges that it cannot be applied to saline lakes because Daphnia , the main responsible for the clear water state, is not tolerant to high salinity. Our study shows that the most saline lakes, where the halophylic Daphnia menucoensis is abundant, have also the most clear waters. Another difference that we found with regards to the mentioned model is that, in turbid lakes, it could not have had a top‐down control on macrozooplankton exerted by fishes because in these lakes fishes were practically absent. The two subspecies of Ophisaurus apodus represent different ecotypes: thracicus is a coastal type, which occurs in Turkey along all coasts (but only local along the Black Sea coast), whereas nominate apodus is an inland type which is found in Turkey only in the extreme east. Representatives of the monophyletic Trentepohliales are widely distributed in the tropics, subtropics, and temperate regions worldwide. They grow in soil, or are epilithic, epiphytic or endophytic. The family comprises approximately 70 species placed in at least four genera (Trentepohlia, Cephaleuros, Phycopeltis and Stomatochroon), with Trentepohlia sensu lato (including Printzina and Physolinum) accounting for half of the species in this family. PCR amplification and sequencing of the 18 SSU rDNA of 18 isolates of the Trentepohliaceae were used to assess the monophyly of the genus Cephaleuros and to determine the phylogenetic relationships among species of Trentepohlia sensu lato. Distance, Parsimony, and Maximum Likelihood analyses indicate that Trentepohlia sensu lato is basal and includes two species recently transferred to Phycopeltis (P. umbrina) and Printzina (P. lagenifera). In contrast, Cephaleuros is a derived monophyletic clade. Analysis of isolates of C. virescens, from the USA, Taiwan, and South Africa indicate that this taxon may consist of different species sharing a convergent morphology. The results of this study have implications for the taxonomy of the genera.  相似文献

The mutation gigantea (gi) is recessive and belongs to the late-flowering mutations in Arabidopsis thaliana. The late-flowering mutations result in a pronounced delay in flowering due to a prolonged phase of vegetative growth, which is manifested by an increased number of primary foliage leaves in the rosette (i.e. vegetative nodes). To examine the nature of the gi mutation, detailed phenotypic analysis was carried out for three representative mutant alleles. The results indicate that gi mutants have a defect in the promotion of the floral induction process by long-day photoperiods and not in the flowering process per se. Temperature-shift experiments using a partially conditional allele were employed to determine the timing of the functional requirement for the product of the GI locus. The end of the deduced functional period corresponds to the period at which transition of the apical meristem from the vegetative to the reproductive phase occurs. Such timing is in good agreement with the postulated role of the GI locus. These results demonstrate that the GI locus is involved in the promotion of floral initiation (entrance of the meristem into the transitional stage) by long-day photoperiods.  相似文献

Barnacles of the genus Galkinius occupy a large spectrum of host corals, making it one of the least host‐specific genera within the Pyrgomatidae. Molecular analyses show that within the genus Galkinius there are highly supported clades, suggesting that the genus Galkinius is a complex of evolutionarily significant units (ESUs). The morphology of the opercular valves has been used as the basis for the separation of species of Galkinius. In this study, morphological variability was found both between specimens within ESUs extracted from different host species and between specimens extracted from the same colony. Identifications based on the opercular valves cannot therefore be assigned to different species despite being genetically distinguishable. It is proposed that in many cases the differences between valve morphology of different species of Galkinius are the outcome of ontogeny. Allometric growth of the valves has resulted in differences in the proportions of the parts of the valve. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

The steady-state fluorescence anisotropy r has been measured at 25°C for dilute solutions of epicatechin units connected by interflavan bonds with 4β → 8 stereochemistry. The molecules studied are monodisperse oligomers from the monomer through the hexamer, and a polydisperse sample with a number-average degree of polymerization xn of 10. The hexamer and smaller oligomers have been removed from the polydisperse sample. All samples have a very small value of r in 1,4-dioxane and in methanol. Higher values of r are seen in ethylene glycol and in glycerol. In the latter two solvents, the monomer has significantly higher r than any species with xn > 1. This observation is interpreted as evidence for the presence of excitation migration from one monomer to another in the dimer and species of higher xn.  相似文献

Summary A 2.7 kilobase pair (Kb) fragment of DNA, which complements mutations in the hisI locus of Escherichia coli, has been cloned and sequenced from the genome of the methanogenic archaebacterium Methanococcus vannielii. The cloned DNA directs the synthesis of three polypeptides, with molecular weights of 71,000, 29,000 and 15,600 in minicells of E. coli. Subcloning and mutagenesis demonstrates that hisI complementation results from the activity of the 15,600 molecular weight polypeptide. The primary structure of this archaebacterial gene and its gene product have been compared with the functionally equivalent gene and protein from the eubacterium E. coli (hisI) (Chiariotti et al. 1986) and from the eucaryote Saccharomyces cerevisiae (his4A) (Donahue et al. 1982). The DNA sequences of the archaebacterial and eubacterial genes are 40% homologous, the archaebacterial and eucaryotic DNA sequences are 47% homologous and, as previously reported (Bruni et al. 1986) the eubacterial and eucaryotic DNA sequences are 45% homologous. In E. coli the hisI locus is part of a bifunctional gene (hisI/E) within the single his operon. In S. cerevisiae the his4A locus is part of a multifunctional gene (his4) which encodes a protein with at least four enzymatic activities. The his genes of S. cerevisiae do not form an operon and are not physically linked. The M. vannielii hisI gene does not appear to be part of a multifunctional DNA sequence and, although it does appear to be within an operon, the open reading frames (ORFs) 5 and 3 to the M. vannielii hisI gene are not related to any published his sequences. The hisI and hisA genes (Cue et al. 1985) of M. vannielii are not closely linked in its genome.  相似文献

The presence of the egg size-determining (Esd) gene, which acts as a quantitative gene, on the W chromosome of the silkworm was revealed in a previous study by using two types of triploid females, ZZW and ZWW, (Kawamura, Genetica 76: 195–201). The females with the sex-linked giant egg (Ge) gene deposit eggs as large as those laid by tetraploids. If the Ge mutant is induced by translocation of a fragment of the W carrying Esd onto the Z by chance, the egg size increase in the Ge strain and in tetraploids may be easily explained by the double dose of Esd. The measurement of the length of the Z-W bivalent in oocytes showed that the Z of the Ge strain was much longer than that of the other strains which do not carry the Ge gene. The result suggests that the Ge gene is identical with the Esd on the W chromosome of the silkworm.  相似文献

Summary

The Chinese species of the genus Coenochilus Schaum, 1841 are revised, including a new species, C. pilosus n. sp. described from southern China (also from Vietnam and Laos). The lectotype for Coenochilus uncinatipes Moser, 1915 is designated, and this name is recognized as a junior synonym of C. bifoveolatus Fairmaire, 1888. Previously published synonymy of Coenochilus apicalis Westwood, 1873 and C. armiger Westwood, 1873 is confirmed based on the examination of type specimens. The neotype of C. tonkinensis Moser, 1910 is designated, and C. clinteroceroides Jákl, 2015 is synonymized with this species. Coenochilus tonkinensis is newly recorded from China, while Chinese records of C. nitidus Arrow, 1910 are verified as misidentification of C. striatus Westwood, 1873, thus C. nitidus is removed from the Chinese fauna. Diagnoses and illustrations are provided for all five Chinese species. A key to Chinese species and new distribution records are also presented.??  相似文献

Evidence from several sources shows that Psilanthus is a synonym of Coffea. In order to finalize the taxonomic placement of Psilanthus within Coffea a new combination is necessary for the type species of Psilanthus, P. mannii. The combination Coffea mannii is made here. This paper presents the first phylogenetic analysis of Pachydeminae Reitter, 1902 ; one of the least known subfamilies of Melolonthidae, `leaf‐chafers' (Scarabaeoidea, Coleoptera). Some species of Pachydeminae have recently become agricultural pests in southern Spain. We analysed the phylogenetic relationships among 49 species belonging to 16 genera in the Palearctic region, based on a set of 63 morphological characters from the adult external morphology, wing anatomy, mouthparts and male and female genitalia. The last three sets of characters are described here for the first time. The phylogeny shows that the Palearctic Pachydeminae are monophyletic within the subfamily. Mouthparts and male and female genitalia provide the best synapomorphies for intergeneric relationships. In contrast, most of the external morphological characters used in the taxonomy of Pachydeminae are highly homoplastic. The phylogeny shows a basal split between the genera Hemictenius Reitter, 1897; Pachydema Castelnau, 1832, and the monospecific Peritryssus Reitter, 1918; and a second clade including the rest of genera. The remarkable Peritryssus is confirmed as a Pachydeminae, being the sister group to the monophyletic Hemictenius . Except for the position of P. rubripennis (Lucas, 1848) and P. zhora Normand, 1951, the phylogeny supports the monophyly of Pachydema but rejects the traditional division into species groups and the monophyly of the endemic Canarian species. In contrast, Tanyproctus Faldermann, 1835, must be rejected as polyphyletic. Otoclinius Brenske, 1896, is also probably polyphyletic (two new species synonymies), whereas Leptochristina Baraud and Branco, 1991 , is either mono‐ or paraphyletic. The two Mediterranean genera Ceramida Baraud, 1897, and Elaphocera Gené, 1836, form a monophyletic group, this clade being the best supported by the data set. Ceramida is clearly monophyletic, whereas Elaphocera is probably monophyletic except for E. barbara Rambur, 1843, which shares with Ceramida the character state for numerous mouthpart and genitalic characters. The phylogeny questions the generic status of the small and monospecific genera of Pachydeminae. The monotypic Alaia Petrovitz, 1980 , and Brenskiella Berg, 1898, are merged with Europtron Marseul, 1867, into one clade, whereas Atanyproctus Petrovitz, 1954, is grouped with some species of Tanyproctus , and the monotypic Pachydemocera Reitter, 1902 , is proposed as a junior synonym of Elaphocera .  相似文献
