Obtaining biological and spatial information of the early life history (ELH) phases of fishes has been problematic, such that larval and juvenile phases are often referred to as the ‘black box’ of fish population biology and ecology. However, a potent source of life‐history data has been mined from the earstones (otoliths) of bony fishes. We systematically reviewed 476 empirical papers published between 2005 and 2012 (inclusive) that used otoliths to examine fish ELH phases, which has been an area of increasing attention over this period. We found that otolith‐based research during this period could be split into two broad themes according to whether studies examined: (i) biological objectives related to intrinsic processes such as larval and juvenile age, growth and mortality, and/or (ii) spatial objectives, such as habitat use, dispersal and migration. Surprisingly, just 24 studies (5%) explored a combined biological–spatial objective by simultaneously exploiting biological and spatial information from otoliths, suggesting much more scope for such integrated research objectives to be answered via the use of multiple otolith‐based techniques in a single study. Mapping otolith analytical techniques across these two approaches revealed that otolith structural analysis was mainly used to investigate biological processes, while otolith chemical analyses were most often applied to spatial questions. Heavy skew in research effort was apparent across biomes, with most (62%) publications specific to marine species, despite comparable levels of species richness and the importance of freshwater taxa (just 15% of papers). Indeed, around 1% (380 species) of a possible 31400+ extant species were examined in our surveyed papers, with a strong emphasis on temperate marine species of commercial value. Potential model species for otolith‐based ELH ecology research are arising, with the eel genus Anguilla (24 studies) and the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolis (14 studies) attracting more research effort than most other taxa. While there is a preponderance of common techniques (e.g. daily otolith increment counts, increment widths), novel techniques such as transgenerational marking and computed X‐ray tomography, are increasingly being applied in published studies. The application of an integrative approach based on a combination of emerging techniques and traditional methods holds promise for major advances in our understanding of ELH fish ecology and to shine light into the ‘black box’ of fish ecology.  相似文献

Strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations in the otoliths of the shirauo, Salangichthys microdon, collected from Japanese coastal waters were examined by wavelength‐dispersive X‐ray spectrometry on an electron microprobe. The otolith Sr : Ca ratios gradually increased from 15.7?19.7 × 10?3 around the core to 32.8?39.4 × 10?3 around the edge of otoliths, with no transition point from the low Sr : Ca ratio phase to the high phase. The fluctuation pattern of otolith Sr : Ca ratios was different from the anadromous form reported in a previous study. The evidence indicates that the fish do not necessarily migrate into freshwater during the growth phase.  相似文献

This work derived biocompatible and stable probes based on fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs) from a natural source, Curcuma longa. The multi‐color fluorescence emissions from carbonized Curcuma longa (C‐FNPs) obtained through defined dehydration conditions are soluble in water and have a small particle size (~17 nm). The surface passivation with polyethylene glycol (PEG) capped with amine groups in FNPs (P‐FNPs) generated a probe with a higher quantum yield and longer fluorescence lifetime than obtained with C‐FNPs. The X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction spectra confirmed the associated chemical moieties of C‐FNPs and P‐FNPs. Furthermore, the prepared material showed non‐toxic effects with almost 100% cell viability, even at high concentrations. In conclusion, fluorescence sensors from natural sources may be useful for numerous biomedical research applications.  相似文献

X‐ray radiation is detrimental to human cells and may lead to development of life‐threatening diseases. Cigarette smoke contains about 500 chemicals that include organic and oxidant compounds whereas vitamin C and E (VCE) have scavenger effects on the compounds. We investigated effects of VCE administration on X‐ray‐induced oxidative toxicity in blood of smoker and nonsmoker X‐ray technicians. Twenty technicians and 30 healthy age‐matched subjects control were used in the study. Ten of the X‐ray technicians and 15 of the control were smokers. Blood samples were taken from the control. Oral vitamin C (500 mg) and vitamin E (150 mg) were daily supplemented to the smoker and nonsmoker X‐ray technicians for 5 weeks. Blood samples were taken from the X‐ray technicians after and before 5 weeks. Plasma and erythrocytes lipid peroxidation (LP), reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, erythrocytes glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px), and plasma antioxidant vitamin concentrations were investigated in control and X‐ray technicians with smoker and nonsmoker. Plasma and erythrocytes LP levels were higher in the total X‐ray group and smoker X‐ray group than in control and nonsmoker X‐ray group, respectively although the LP level was decreased by the VCE treatment. The plasma vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, and β‐carotene concentrations were lower in the X‐ray group than in control although their concentrations were increased by the treatment. The erythrocytes GSH level and GSH‐Px activity were found to be higher in the treatment group than in the X‐ray group. Plasma GSH level was not found to be different in all group. Reactive oxygen species may play role in the mechanism that has been proposed to explain the biological side effect of X‐ray radiation and smoke. VCE prevents the smoke and X‐ray‐induced oxidative stress to strengthen antioxidant vitamin concentrations in the blood of the technicians. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The age and migratory history of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica Temminck & Schlegel, collected in Miyako Bay along the Sanriku coast of Japan, was examined using the otolith microstructure and analysis of strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations conducted with wavelength dispersive X‐ray spectrometry by an electron microprobe. The line analysis of Sr : Ca ratios along the life history transect of each otolith showed a peak (ca. 15–17 × 10?3) which corresponded with the period of their leptocephalus and early glass eel stages in the ocean. The mean Sr : Ca ratios from the elver mark to the otolith edge indicated that there were eels with several general categories of migratory history, including sea eels that never entered freshwater (average Sr : Ca ratios, ≥6.0 × 10?3), and others that entered freshwater for brief periods but returned to the estuary or bay. This evidence of the occurrence of sea eels in this northern area indicates that Japanese eels of the Sanriku coast do not necessarily migrate into freshwater rivers during recruitment as do glass eels at the beginning of their growth phase; even those that do enter freshwater may later return to the marine environment. Thus, anguillid eel migrations into freshwater are clearly not an obligatory migratory pathway, but rather a facultative catadromy with seawater or estuarine residents as an ecophenotype.  相似文献

The ontogenetic patterns of habitat use and the migratory history of the tapertail anchovy, Coilia mystus, collected in the Changjiang estuary around Chongming Island, China, were studied by examining the environmental signature in the otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) fingerprints using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Our results suggest that the migration strategy of C. mystus is much more flexible than supposed in the literature to date. The spring spawning population of C. mystus from the studied area was found to consist of individuals with different migration histories. Although the tapertail anchovy seems to be an anadromous fish that spawns and hatches in a freshwater habitat, it can also use a freshwater environment in non‐spawning seasons. The otolith EPMA of the elemental fingerprint (Sr x‐ray maps and Sr : Ca ratios) is an environmental indicator that can be applied to the migratory ecology of other important diadromous species in China.  相似文献

The chemical composition of common carp Cyprinus carpio asteriscus (vaterite) and lapillus (aragonite) otoliths from the same individual and reflecting the same growth period was measured to (1) determine whether there are differences in the uptake of trace metals (Mg:Ca, Mn:Ca, Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ) and Sr isotope ratios (87Sr:86Sr) in co‐precipitating lapilli and asterisci and (2) compare the ability of multi‐element and isotopic signatures from lapilli, asterisci and both otolith types combined to discriminate C. carpio populations over a large spatial scale within a river basin. Depth profile analyses at the otolith edge using laser‐ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry showed that asterisci were enriched in Mg and Mn and depleted in Sr and Ba relative to lapilli, whilst 87Sr:86Sr values were nearly identical in both otolith types. Significant spatial differences among capture locations were found when all trace element and Sr isotope ratio data were aggregated into a multi‐element and isotopic signature, regardless of which otolith type was used or if they were used in combination. Discriminatory power was enhanced, however, when data for both otolith types were combined, suggesting that analysis of multiple otolith types may be useful for studies attempting to delineate C. carpio populations at finer spatial or temporal scales.  相似文献

Background: Roentgen irradiation can affect normal cells, especially the rapidly growing ones such as the mucosal epithelial cells of the small intestine. The small intestine is the most radiosensitive gastrointestinal organ and patients receiving radiotherapy directed to the abdomen or pelvis may develop radiation enteritis. Although roentgen rays are widely used for both imaging and therapeutic purposes, our knowledge about the morphological changes associated with radiation enteritis is lacking. Hypothesis: This study tries to tests the hypothesis that “the intake of melatonin can minimize the morphological features of cell damage associated with radiation enteritis”. Objectives and methods: We performed this investigation to test our hypothesis and to examine the possible radioprotective effects of melatonin in acute radiation enteritis. To achieve these goals, an animal model consisting of 60 Albino rats was established. The animals were divided into five groups: Group 1, non‐irradiated; Group 2, X‐ray irradiated (X‐ray irradiation, 8 Grays); Group 3, X‐ray irradiated‐pretreated with solvent (ethanol and phosphate buffered saline); Group 4, non‐irradiated‐group treated with melatonin, and Group 5, X‐ray irradiated‐pretreated with melatonin. The small intestines were evaluated for gross (macroscopic), histological, morphometric (light microscopy), and ultrastructural changes (transmission electron microscopy). Results: We found morphological variations among the non‐irradiated‐group, X‐ray irradiated‐group and X‐ray irradiated‐intestines of the animals pretreated with melatonin. The development of acute radiation enteritis in X‐ray irradiated‐group (Groups 2 and 3) was associated with symptoms of enteritis (diarrhea and abdominal distention) and histological features of mucosal injury (mucosal ulceration, necrosis of the epithelial cells). There was a significant reduction of the morphometric parameters (villous count, villous height, crypt height and villous/crypt height ratio). Moreover, the ultrastructural features of cell damage were evident including: apoptosis, lack of parallel arrangement of the microvilli, loss of the covering glycocalyx, desquamation of the microvilli, vacuolation of the apical parts of the cells, dilatation of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, and damage of the mitochondrial cristae. In the non‐irradiated‐group and in X‐ray irradiated‐intestines of the animals pretreated with melatonin (Group 5), these changes were absent and the intestinal mucosal structure was preserved. Conclusion: Administration of melatonin prior to irradiation can protect the intestine against X‐rays destructive effects, i.e. radiation enteritis. The clinical applications of these observations await further studies.  相似文献

Our previous cellular experiments demonstrated that 100 Hz magnetic field (MF) was effective at enhancing apoptosis of liver cancer cells BEL‐7402 induced by X‐ray irradiation. This study was performed to further explore the possible synergism between 100 Hz MF and X‐ray in treatment of hepatoma‐implanted Balb/c mice. 100 Hz MF exposure with a mean flux density of 0.7 mT was performed inside an energized solenoid coil. Six MV X‐ray irradiation was generated using a linear accelerator. Tumor growth and survival of mice implanted with H22 cells were evaluated by measuring the tumor diameters and overall days of survival. Six groups treated with 100 Hz MF or X‐ray alone or a combination of MF and X‐ray were examined. Furthermore, the effects of different numbers of MF exposure periods on tumor growth and mice survival were examined when combined with 4 Gy X‐ray. Data referring to overall survival days and tumor diameters of the above groups were compared using log‐rank test and Student's t‐test. Our results showed that five periods of combined 100 Hz MFs and 4 Gy X‐ray could significantly extend the overall days of survival and reduce the tumor size compared to MF or X‐ray alone. Also, a greater number of 100 Hz MF exposure periods could further improve the survival and inhibit tumor growth in hepatoma‐implanted mice when combined with 4 Gy X‐ray. In conclusion, these findings suggested that 100 Hz MF could possibly synergize with 4 Gy X‐ray in terms of survival improvement and tumor inhibition in hepatoma‐implanted mice. Bioguided fractionation of Xylopia sericea antiplasmodial dichloromethane leaves extract led to the isolation of (?)‐7‐oxo‐ent‐kaur‐16‐en‐19‐oic acid (C20H28O3) that was identified by a combination of 1D and 2D NMR experiments (COSY, HMBC, HSQC, HSQC‐TOCSY, HSQC‐NOESY and NOESY) and by X‐ray crystallography. A feature to be pointed out is its (4R) configuration that was inferred from the NOE experiments (HSQC‐NOESY and NOESY) and X‐ray crystallography. In vitro evaluation of this rare diterpene acid against the chloroquine‐resistant strain Plasmodium falciparum W2 by the PfLDH method showed it disclosed a low antiplasmodial activity and was not cytotoxic to HepG2 cells (CC50 862.6±6.7 μm ) by the MTT assay. The unequivocal NMR signals assignments, the X‐ray crystallographic structure, the assessment to the bioactivities and the occurrence this diterpene in X. sericea are reported here for the first time.  相似文献

Planarian's strong regenerative ability is dependent on stem cells (called neoblasts) that are X‐ray‐sensitive and proliferative stem cells. In addition to neoblasts, another type of X‐ray‐sensitive cells was newly identified by recent research. Thus, planarian's X‐ray‐sensitive cells can be divided into at least two populations, Type 1 and Type 2, the latter corresponding to planarian's classically defined “neoblasts”. Here, we show that Type 1 cells were distributed in the outer region (OR) immediately underneath the muscle layer at all axial levels from head to tail, while the Type 2 cells were distributed in a more internal region (IR) of the mesenchymal space at the axial levels from neck to tail. To elucidate the biological significance of these two regions, we searched for genes expressed in differentiated cells that were locate close to these X‐ray‐sensitive cell populations in the mesenchymal space, and identified six genes mainly expressed in the OR or IR, named OR1, OR2, OR3, IR1, IR2 and IR3. The predicted amino acid sequences of these genes suggested that differentiated cells expressing OR1, OR3, IR1, or IR2 provide Type 1 and Type 2 cells with specific extracellular matrix (ECM) environments.  相似文献

The main handicap still hindering the eventual exploitation of organometal halide perovskite‐based solar cells is their poor stability under prolonged illumination, ambient conditions, and increased temperatures. This article shows for the first time the vacuum processing of the most widely used solid‐state hole conductor (SSHC), i.e., the Spiro‐OMeTAD [2,2′,7,7′‐tetrakis (N,N‐di‐p‐methoxyphenyl‐amine) 9,9′‐spirobifluorene], and how its dopant‐free crystalline formation unprecedently improves perovskite solar cell (PSC) stability under continuous illumination by about two orders of magnitude with respect to the solution‐processed reference and after annealing in air up to 200 °C. It is demonstrated that the control over the temperature of the samples during the vacuum deposition enhances the crystallinity of the SSHC, obtaining a preferential orientation along the π–π stacking direction. These results may represent a milestone toward the full vacuum processing of hybrid organic halide PSCs as well as light‐emitting diodes, with promising impacts on the development of durable devices. The microstructure, purity, and crystallinity of the vacuum sublimated Spiro‐OMeTAD layers are fully elucidated by applying an unparalleled set of complementary characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, grazing‐incidence small‐angle X‐ray scattering and grazing‐incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy.  相似文献

Aims: To determine the efficacy of X‐ray processes in inactivating L. monocytogenes levels in smoked catfish during storage at 5°C and to determine the effects of X‐ray doses on controlling the growth of spoilage bacteria on smoked catfish during storage at 5°C for up to 5 weeks. Methods and Results: Smoked catfish fillets inoculated with L. monocytogenes were treated with 0·0–2·0 kGy X‐ray and stored at 5°C for 5 weeks. The negative controls (uninoculated/untreated) and uninoculated samples treated with the lowest (0·1 kGy) and highest (2·0 kGy) doses were stored at 5°C and tested for psychrotrophs count during the 5 weeks of storage. The initial L. monocytogenes population on smoked catfish was significantly (P < 0·05) reduced to undetectable level by a treatment of 1·0 kGy or higher. The initial psychrotrophs count on smoked catfish was significantly reduced from 4·7 CFU g?1 to below the detectable level by a treatment with 2·0 kGy. Conclusions: Smoked catfish treated with 2·0 kGy X‐ray had no detectable L. monocytogenes throughout 35 days of storage at 5°C. A treatment with 2·0 kGy X‐ray also kept the levels of psychrotrophs in the smoked catfish within the acceptable level until 35 days. Significance and Impact of the Study: The results of this investigation indicate that X‐ray at 2·0 kGy can eliminate L. monocytogenes and extend the shelf life of smoked catfish stored at refrigeration temperature.  相似文献

All stages of the life cycle of Helicoverpa assulta were irradiated with X‐rays to determine the inhibitory dose for development and reproduction to serve as a quarantine treatment. The 100‐Gy dose was effective for irradiation of eggs and larvae, and the 200‐Gy dose was effective for pupae and mixed‐sex adults. When either adult males or females were irradiated, however, 500 Gy was required to prevent the F1 eggs from hatching, and thus single‐sex adults required much higher doses of X‐ray irradiation. To gather confirmatory data applicable to phytosanitary quarantine regulations, pupae—the immature stage most resistant to X‐ray irradiation—were placed inside paprika in boxes for exportation and were irradiated with 300 Gy as a small‐scale confirmatory test. The dose given to 1,007 individual pupae resulted in 12.62 % survival, and 1.79 % of pupae emerged as normal adults; however, these adults produced only a few eggs that did not hatch, suggesting that a minimum dose of 300 Gy of X‐ray irradiation will provide quarantine security for immature H. assulta in paprika exports.  相似文献

The migratory histories of Japanese freshwater sculpins, one Trachidermus and four Cottus species, were studied by examining strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations in their otoliths using wavelength dispersive X‐ray spectrometry on an electron microprobe. The Sr : Ca ratios in the otoliths changed with salinity of the habitat. The otoliths of Cottus nozawae showed consistently low Sr : Ca ratios, with an average of 3·37 × 10?3 from the core to the edge, suggesting a freshwater resident life cycle. In contrast, the otolith Sr : Ca ratios for Trachidermus fasciatus and Cottus kazika changed along the life history transects possibly in accordance with their migration patterns from sea to fresh water. The ratios of T. fasciatus and C. kazika averaged 5·4 × 10?3 and 5·3 × 10?3 respectively, in the otolith region from the core to the points 450–890 μm, and changed to the lower levels, averaging 2·0 × 10?3 and 2·7 × 10?3, in the outer otolith region. These data suggest that both the species have a catadromous life cycle. The otoliths of Cottus hangiongensis had low Sr : Ca ratios in the two regions from the core to the points 15–30 μm and the points 415–582 μm to the edge, averaging 2·0 × 10?3 and 1·9 × 10?3, with significantly higher ratios in the narrow area between these regions, averaging 4·6 × 10?3. Similar ontogenetic changes in otolith Sr : Ca ratios were found in the otoliths of Cottus amblystomopsis, suggesting their amphidromous life cycle. These findings suggest that otolith Sr : Ca ratios reflect individual life histories and that Japanese Trachidermus and Cottus species have diverse migratory histories.  相似文献

A terminally protected acyclic tetrapeptide has been synthesized, and the crystal structure of its hydrated form, Boc‐Tyr‐Aib‐Tyr‐Ile‐OMe·2H2O ( 1 ), has been determined directly from powder X‐ray diffraction data. The backbone conformation of tetrapeptide ( 1 ) exhibiting two consecutive β‐turns is stabilized by two 4 → 1 intramolecular N―H · · · O hydrogen bonds. In the crystalline state, the tetrapeptide molecules are assembled through water‐mediated O―H · · · O hydrogen bonds to form two‐dimensional molecular sheets, which are further linked by intermolecular C―H · · · O hydrogen bonds into a three‐dimensional supramolecular framework. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surface of ( 1 ) has been used to supplement the crystallographic observations. The nature of intermolecular interactions in ( 1 ) has been analyzed quantitatively through the Hirshfeld surface and two‐dimensional fingerprint plot. The DFT optimized molecular geometry of ( 1 ) agrees closely with that obtained from the X‐ray structure analysis. The present structure analysis of Boc‐Tyr‐Aib‐Tyr‐Ile‐OMe·2H2O ( 1 ) represents a case where ab‐initio crystal structure of an acyclic tetrapeptide with considerable molecular flexibility has been accomplished from laboratory X‐ray powder diffraction data. Copper sulfide and zinc sulfide nanostructures were synthesized using a solvo/hydrothermal method and a thio Schiff base ligand, N‐benzylidene ethanethioamide, as a source of sulfide ions. The effects of different synthesis parameters including the type of solvent, temperature, and duration of reactions on the morphology of the CuS and ZnS products were investigated using field emission scanning microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The structural aspects of the samples were characterized using powder X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X‐ray analysis. The optical properties of the samples were studied through their optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra. The photocatalytic ability of the as‐synthesized sulfides was explored by studying the colour removal of methylene blue under ultraviolet light irradiation.  相似文献
