Reef fish spawning aggregations are attractive and often lucrative to fish but particularly vulnerable to fishing, with many cases of declines or extirpations. While awareness of the risks of aggregation exploitation has grown substantially in the tropical western Atlantic in the last decade, the phenomenon of aggregation-spawning is little known in the vast Indo-Pacific region where few aggregations are managed or monitored, and are rarely considered in marine-protected area designations. Even in the tropical western Atlantic and Caribbean, marine-protected area planning, until recently, did not typically consider spawning aggregations. Available data and analyses of aggregation-fisheries and aggregating species strongly suggest that: (1) the majority of known aggregations that are exploited are yielding declining landings; (2) aggregating species show greatest overall declines in local fisheries when their aggregations are also exploited; (3) from an economic perspective, aggregation fishing may yield lower prices for fish, or aggregations may be more valuable unexploited, as a source of fish for local fisheries or as tourist attractions; (4) hyperstability can mask declines in aggregation-fisheries, based on fishery-dependent data; (5) monitoring of aggregation catches by either fishery-dependent or fishery-independent means is deceptively challenging. There are also possible ecosystem-level consequences of reducing or eliminating spawning aggregations. We conclude that aggregation-fisheries are likely to be sustainable only for limited subsistence-level use, that the precautionary principle should be more widely applied in aggregation-fisheries and that, despite growing interest in aggregations over the last decade, few of the key biological questions necessary for effective management have been, or are being, addressed.  相似文献

Spotted sand bass (Paralabrax maculatofasciatus) is one of the most common inshore reef fishes in the northern Gulf of California (GOC), Mexico, but has rarely been studied. Objectives of this study were to estimate age and growth parameters of this species from two areas in the northern GOC and use an age-structured model to assess fishery yield and Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR) over a wide range of exploitations. Samples yielded fish up to age 8, although most were between age 2 and 5. Growth was extremely rapid, with most of the growth in length achieved in the first year, followed by much slower growth. Conditional rates of natural mortality averaged 0.37. Yield models predicted that spotted sand bass in the GOC were less vulnerable to fishing than those in the Pacific Ocean, likely due to faster growth and higher natural mortality. Growth overfishing and SPR values below 0.20 were only predicted at the lowest natural mortality and high (>0.50) exploitation rates. Results suggested that the species could support a commercial fishery in the GOC that might alleviate some of the conservation issues currently facing biologists in this unique marine ecosystem.  相似文献

Commercial fisheries data, collected as part of an observer programme and covering the period 1997–2014, were utilized in order to define key reproductive traits and spawning dynamics of the Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides at South Georgia. Multi‐year spawning site fidelity of D. eleginoides was revealed through the identification of previously unknown spawning hotspots. Timing of female spawning was shown to have shifted later, leading to a shorter spawning duration. A decrease in length and mass of female and male spawning fish and a reduced number of large spawning fish was found, evidence of a change in size structure of spawning D. eleginoides. During the study period fewer later maturity stage females (including spawning stage) were observed in conjunction with increased proportions of early stage female D. eleginoides. The findings are discussed in the context of reproductive success, with consideration of the possible effects such spawning characteristics and behaviours may have on egg and larval survival. This work presents the first long‐term assessment of D. eleginoides spawning dynamics at South Georgia and provides valuable knowledge for both the ecology of the species and for future fisheries management of this commercially important species.  相似文献

Ultrasonic imaging was used to determine the spawning population structure and develop a fecundity estimation model for a red hind Epinephelus guttatus spawning aggregation within the Red Hind Bank Marine Conservation District, St Thomas, U.S.V.I. The spawning population showed considerable within‐month and between‐month variation in population size‐ and sex‐structure. In the spawning season studied, males appeared to arrive at the aggregation site first in December although females represented a large proportion of the catch early in the aggregation periods in January and February. Spawning occurred in January and February, and size frequency distributions suggested that an influx of small females occurred during the second spawning month. An overall sex ratio of 2·9 : 1 (female : male) was recorded for the whole reproductive season. The sex ratio, however, differed between months and days within months. More females per male were recorded in January than in February when the sex ratio was male biased. Fecundity estimates for this species predicted very high potential fecundities (2·4 × 105−2·4 × 106 oocytes). The ultrasound model also illustrated a rapid increase in potential female fecundity with total length. Ultrasonic imaging may prove a valuable tool in population assessment for many species and locations in which invasive fishing methods are clearly undesirable.  相似文献

We report on evidence of long term stability inthe geographic pattern of geneticdifferentiation among cod (Gadus morhua)collected from 5 spawning banks offNewfoundland and Labrador over a periodspanning three decades (1964–1994) and 2orders of magnitude of population sizevariation. Six microsatellite DNA lociamplified from archived otoliths (1964 and1978) and contemporary (1990s) tissue samplesrevealed fidelity to natal spawning banks overthis period. A two level (spawning bank anddecade) hierarchical and multilocus AMOVAindicated that 1.55% of the total variation inallele frequencies could be attributed(P = 0.036) to spatial structure while novariance component could be attributed totemporal changes. A finer scale analysis amongcod from just 3 of these spawning banksreveals, however, evidence consistent with somepost-collapse mixing between cod from twobanks. In the context of fisheries managementand conservation, the survival of the spatialpattern of genetic differentiation during thepopulation collapse suggests that if recoveryeventually occurs it will likely be throughpopulation re-growth in situ rather thanby migratory influx.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Great Barrier Reef populations of the long-lived grouper Epinephelus fuscoguttatus (brown-marbled grouper or flowery cod) was investigated using histological analyses. Evidence provided by gonad morphology and age-based demographics suggested monandric protogynous hermaphroditism. Younger age groups contained only immature and mature females, and all males were above the size and age of 100% female maturity, consistent with secondary males derived from mature females by adult sex change. Fishing records confirmed that spawning aggregations of this species and the co-occurring Epinephelus polyphekadion (camouflage grouper) are sometimes targeted on the Great Barrier Reef. Sampling data revealed strong spawning seasonality for E. fuscoguttatus , with a relatively narrow annual spawning period (November to January). The temporal pattern of reproductive activity within the spawning period, based on occurrence of near spawning ovaries (containing hydrated oocytes), indicated spawning events may occur throughout much of the lunar cycle and only partly coincide with seasonal fishing closure periods on the Great Barrier Reef. The results indicate that protection would be enhanced by a longer seasonal closure.  相似文献

Scorpaeniformes are an important component of commercial and recreational fisheries world-wide. The Neosebastes species, found in the western Pacific and south-east Indian Ocean, have received little attention from a research perspective. Samples of the bighead gurnard perch, Neosebastes pandus, collected from the lower west and south coasts of Western Australia, were used to undertake the first comprehensive investigation of the biological characteristics of a Neosebastes species. Opaque zones in sectioned sagittal otoliths were validated as forming annually. Female N. pandus grow to a significantly larger size, on average, than males and dominate the largest size classes, while males, growing to a smaller size, accumulate in the intermediate size classes. Although males were far less numerous than females in those age classes in which both sexes were found, males and females attain similar maximum ages >25 years. Neosebastes pandus spawns over a brief period between May (austral late autumn) and July (austral mid-autumn) when water temperature and day length are declining. The mean monthly gonadosomatic indices (GSI, IGS) values of females during the spawning period are 37–50 times higher than those of males, which mature at an earlier age and smaller length compared to females. Histological examination of the ovaries of females indicate that their structure is consistent with “general” teleost ovarian anatomy and thus differs from Scorpaena, Helicolenus and Sebastes species whose ovaries are adapted for specialized reproductive modes. The reproductive strategy of N. pandus of maximizing the reproductive output of females, by this sex attaining a larger size than males and pair spawning (i.e., large disparity in IGS values) demonstrates the close lineage between the Neosebastes and other Scorpaeniformes, such as the Scorpaena, Helicolenus and Sebastes.  相似文献

Fishery‐independent sampling was used to determine growth patterns, life span, mortality rates and timing of maturation and sex change in 12 common parrotfishes (Labridae: tribe Scarinae) from five genera (Calotomus, Cetoscarus, Chlorurus, Hipposcarus and Scarus) in Micronesia. Interspecific variation in life‐history traits was explored using multivariate analysis. All species displayed strong sex‐specific patterns of length‐at‐age among which males reached larger asymptotic lengths. There was a high level of correlation among life‐history traits across species. Relationships between length‐based and age‐based variables were weakest, with a tenuous link between maximum body size and life span. Cluster analysis based on similarities among life‐history traits demonstrated that species were significantly grouped at two major levels. The first grouping was driven by length‐based variables (lengths at maturity and sex change and maximum length) and separated the small‐ and large‐bodied species. Within these, species were grouped by age‐based variables (age at maturity, mortality and life span). Groupings based on demographic and life‐history features were independent of phylogenetic relationships at the given taxonomic level. The results reiterate that body size is an important characteristic differentiating species, but interspecific variation in age‐based traits complicates its use as a life‐history proxy. Detailed life‐history metrics should facilitate future quantitative assessments of vulnerability to overexploitation in multispecies fisheries.  相似文献

Genetic differentiation has been observed in marine species even when no obvious barriers to gene flow exist, and understanding such differentiation is essential for effective fisheries management. Highly differentiated outlier loci can provide information on how genetic variation might not only contribute to local adaptation but may also be affected by historical demographic events. A locus which aligned to a predicted zona pellucida sperm‐binding protein 3 gene (ZP3) in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) was previously identified as the highest outlier based on F ST in a RADseq study of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) across the West Coast of North America. However, because of the limited length of the RAD sequence and restricted geographic area of sampling, no conclusion on the functional significance of the observed variation was possible. In other marine species, ZP3 is involved in reproductive isolation, local adaptation, and has neofunctionalized as an antifreeze gene, and so it may provide important insights in functional population structure of Pacific cod. Here, we sequenced a 544‐bp region of ZP3 in 230 Pacific cod collected from throughout their geographic range. We observed striking patterns of spatial structuring of ZP3 haplotypes, with a sharp break near Kodiak, Alaska, USA where populations within ~200 km of each other are nearly fixed for different haplotypes, contrasting a pattern of isolation by distance at other genetic markers in this region (F ST = 0.003). Phylogenetic analysis of ZP3 haplotypes revealed that the more southern haplotypes appear to be ancestral, with the northern haplotype evolving more recently, potentially in response to a novel selective pressure as Pacific cod recolonized northern latitudes after glaciation. The sharp break in haplotype frequencies suggests strong selective pressures are operating on small spatial scales and illustrates that selection can create high divergence even in marine species with ample opportunities for gene flow.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Centropomus pectinatus is described from an artisanal fish landings collaborative monitoring programme between May 2012 and April 2013 in estuarine waters in north‐eastern Brazil. The total length (LT) at which 50% are mature was 24 cm, corresponding to 37·7% of the maximum recorded LT. Gonado‐somatic indices were variable, but highest values were in June and August 2012. Length‐frequency distributions showed male dominance in smaller length classes (15–30 cm) and females in larger length classes (>30 cm).  相似文献

The reproductive and feeding biology of 314 Schilbe intermedius Rüppell 1832 collected in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, between April 1985 and February 1986 during low, intermediate and high water level were investigated. S. intermedius matures at 130 mm standard length and is a monocyclic spawner. Females predominate in the population and have an average fecundity of 27107 eggs. In the northern riverine floodplain of the Delta fish spawn in mid-summer during the peak flood. In the southern drainage rivers fish spawn in spring, which is two to three months after the arrival of the winter flood waters. S. intermedius is an opportunistic predator with a diet consisting largely of fish 41%, aquatic larvae 25%, terrestrial insects 14%, aquatic insects 7% and crustacea 5%. Juvenile S. intermedius feed predominantly on insect larvae, while adults are largely piscivorous.  相似文献

Reproductive behavior of the sandperch Parapercis snyderi was studied in the coastal waters of Shikoku Island, Japan. This fish is a monandric and protogynous hermaphrodite. Males maintained home ranges of ca. 10 m2 that slightly overlapped with each other. Harems included on average 2.45 females that were spaced out from each other. Males mated successively in pairs with the harem members within two hours before sunset. To release gametes, the pair rushed upward 10–200 cm. The pair spawning was sometimes parasitized by sneaking of an adjacent harem master, which had usually finished mating with his own mates. More than 80% of the sneaking rushes reached the apex of the pair rise, suggesting a high success rate of sneaking. Such sneaking by harem masters has not been reported in the genus Parapercis. The comparative reproductive ecology of this genus suggested that sneaking in P. snyderi is due to the close proximity of adjacent harems.  相似文献

Otoliths and gonads of blackbelly rosefish Helicolenus dactylopterus dactylopterus were collected from the commercial fishery off the Carolinas in 1994–1997. Opaque bands on transverse sections of otoliths were determined to be annuli by analysis of marginal increments. Opaque zone formation occurs between July and January. Ages ranged from 7 to 30 years. Blackbelly rosefish have intraovarian gestation. Fertilization is internal, as free spermatozoa were found primarily in resting ovaries from July through early December with peak occurrence in September through November. There was a delay of 1–3 months before fertilization, as oocyte development did not begin until December. Occurrence during January through April of early-celled embryos, the most advanced stage observed, and postovulatory follicles indicated that oocyte development was rapid. Egg development occurs in a clear gelatinous matrix secreted into the ovarian cavity. The reproductive mode is a zygoparous form of oviparity, intermediate between oviparity and viviparity. Population sex ratio departed markedly from 1: 1 for most length intervals. Males were more abundant at lengths >250 mm L T and the overall male: female ratio was 1 : 0·60.  相似文献

The analysis of elements in calcifiedstructures of fish (e.g., otoliths) todiscriminate among fish stocks and determineconnectivity between populations is becomingwidespread in fisheries research. Recently, theconcentrations of elements in otoliths arebeing analysed on finer scales that allow thedetermination of a continuous record of otolithchemistry over a fish's entire life history.These elemental concentrations can potentiallybe used to reconstruct migration patterns,based upon the influence that water chemistry,temperature, and salinity have on otolithchemistry. In doing so, assumptions are madeabout how environmental and biological factorsinfluence the concentration of elements in fishotoliths. However, there have been fewexperiments that have tested crucialassumptions regarding what influences elementaluptake and incorporation into fish otoliths.Specifically, knowledge regarding interactionsamong environmental variables, such as theambient concentration of elements in water,temperature, and salinity, and how they mayaffect otolith chemistry, is limited.Similarly, our understanding of the rate atwhich elements are incorporated into otolithsand the implications this may have forinterpretations is lacking. This reviewdiscusses methods of determining movement offish, the development of otolith research, andsome physiological aspects of otoliths (e.g.,pathways of elemental uptake). The types ofanalysis techniques that will lead to reliableand accurate migratory reconstructions areoutlined. The effects that have on otolith chemistry arereviewed with the specific aim of highlightingareas lacking environmentalvariables in experimental data. Theinfluences of the rate of elementalincorporation and ontogeny on otolith chemistryare also addressed. Finally, future researchdirections are suggested that will fill thegaps in our current knowledge of otolithchemistry. Hypotheses that need to be tested inorder to reconstruct the migratory histories offish are outlined, in a bid to clarify thedirection that research should take beforecomplex reconstructions are attempted.  相似文献

Abstract

The success of commercial fishermen and their attitudes about that success are dimensions which require consideration in implementing management regulations designed to limit entry, improve the livelihood of fishermen, and reduce costs to the consumer. This case study of the fishing success and attitudes of Oregon commercial fishermen reveals a diversity of attitudes about fishing success, about competition between harvesters, and about the relations with other harvesters. In addition, the measurement of the success of commercial fishermen is subject to a number of qualifications (Appendix). All of these factors operate to reduce recognition of the need for new forms of fisheries management.  相似文献

Sharks are one of the most threatened marine animals, with fishing identified as the prime human activity responsible for population declines. The tropical eastern Pacific, a biogeographic region spanning the coastal areas from Mexico to Peru including the Colombian Pacific coast and the Galapagos archipelago, forms critical habitat and migratory routes for sharks and other marine megafauna. The Colombian government recently announced a total (blanket) ban on all forms of shark fishing in the country, including artisanal and industrial. Prohibiting shark fisheries in Colombia could drive fishing and trade under-ground, fueling criminality, and marginalization. This will not only undermine recent efforts of local communities and researchers to manage small-scale fisheries, but will criminalize a key source of income for a historically marginalized part of Colombian society. To be effective and ethical, this government decision needs to be rethought incorporating a more holistic management strategy consented among different stakeholder groups.  相似文献

Reproductive segregation among the large barbs Barbus intermedius complex, Cyprinidae , of Lake Tana, Ethiopia, was investigated in the mouths and upstream reaches of rivers tributary to the lake, during the spawning seasons of 1993 and 1994. The percentage of running fish of four Barbus morphotypes [Acute (Ac), Bigmouth big-eye (Be), Intermedius (In), and Shorthead (Sh)] peaks with the highest water level of the lake. Large differences are apparent in the minimum fork length of running fish among morphotypes [c. 12 cm for male Sh and 28 cm for male Bigmouth small-eye (Se)]. Significant differences occur in temporal, but especially in spatial patterns of the relative abundance of running morphotypes, when the lake is compared with the four major river mouths and their upstream reaches. These different relative abundances are clearest among Ac, Be, In, Sh and Troutlike (Tr). Also, the absence from the rivers of some morphotypes that are usually abundant in the lake itself [Barbel (Ba), Dark (Da), Lip (Li), and Zurki (Zu)], and the abundant presence in the rivers of Tr, rare in the lake, strengthen the hypothesis that spatial and/or temporal spawning segregation is present among the morphotypes. There are indications that Bighead (Bh) and Zu spawn in the lake itself, while other morphotypes were only found running in or near rivers. Combined with the morphological, ecological, and genetic differences, these data suggest the existence of several Barbus species, forming a unique species flock, which probably evolved within the lake. The presence of several, instead of one Barbus species complicates management of sustainable fisheries and protection of the lake's biodiversity. Present results show the importance of the rivers for Barbus reproduction and stress the urgent need for careful management of fishing activities in spawning times and areas.  相似文献

Aim This study investigated the use of stable δ13C and δ18O isotopes in the sagittal otolith carbonate of narrow‐barred Spanish mackerel, Scomberomorus commerson, as indicators of population structure across Australia. Location Samples were collected from 25 locations extending from the lower west coast of Western Australia (30°), across northern Australian waters, and to the east coast of Australia (18°) covering a coastline length of approximately 9500 km, including samples from Indonesia. Methods The stable δ13C and δ18O isotopes in the sagittal otolith carbonate of S. commerson were analysed using standard mass spectrometric techniques. The isotope ratios across northern Australian subregions were subjected to an agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis to define subregions. Isotope ratios within each of the subregions were compared to assess population structure across Australia. Results Cluster analysis separated samples into four subregions: central Western Australia, north Western Australia, northern Australia and the Gulf of Carpentaria and eastern Australia. Isotope signatures for fish from a number of sampling sites from across Australia and Indonesia were significantly different, indicating population separation. No significant differences were found in otolith isotope ratios between sampling times (no temporal variation). Main conclusions Significant differences in the isotopic signatures of S. commerson demonstrate that there is unlikely to be any substantial movement of fish among these spatially discrete adult assemblages. The lack of temporal variation among otolith isotope ratios indicates that S. commerson populations do not undergo longshore spatial shifts in distribution during their life history. The temporal persistence of spatially explicit stable isotopic signatures indicates that, at these spatial scales, the population units sampled comprise functionally distinct management units or separate ‘stocks’ for many of the purposes of fisheries management. The spatial subdivision evident among populations of S. commerson across northern and western Australia indicates that it may be advantageous to consider S. commerson population dynamics and fisheries management from a metapopulation perspective (at least at the regional level).  相似文献

The reproductive behaviour of the kelp bass Paralabrax clathratus was studied on Santa Catalina Island, California, U.S.A. from April 2000 to September 2002. Adults formed aggregations of three to > 200 individuals, and spawning occurred within subgroups of three to 23 individuals that contained a single female. The gonado‐somatic index ( I G) of collected ripe males (mean = 5·8%, range = 0·5–13·1%) indicated a large investment in sperm production that is common in group‐spawning fishes characterized by intense sperm competition. Spawning occurred 32 min before sunset to 120 min after sunset, and both males and females were capable of spawning multiple times during a single evening. Behavioural observations of adults and estimates of spawning periodicity from the collection of females with hydrated oocytes suggested that spawning occurred continuously throughout the summer months and showed no significant relationship with the lunar cycle. In general, the spawning behaviour of kelp bass was similar to other functionally gonochoric, group‐spawning serranids. The dynamics of P. clathratus spawning aggregations, however, were inconsistent with that of tropical reef fish spawning aggregations, including the transient spawning aggregations of some tropical serranids. Aggregation spawning appeared to be an important component of the annual reproduction of this species.  相似文献
