The effect of adult experience on in-flight orientation to plant–host complex volatiles byAphidius erviHaliday was studied in a wind tunnel bioassay, usingAcyrthosiphon pisum(Harris), maintained on broad bean plants (Vicia faba) as host. A short oviposition experience (15 s) on the plant–host complex (PHC) was sufficient to induce a drastic decrease of flight propensity and stimulated a foraging behavior characterized by intense walking activity. However, flight activity resumed to normal levels 1 h after the oviposition experience on the PHC occurred. For parasitoids conditioned on the PHC for at least 1 min the recorded proportion making oriented flights to the PHC was significantly higher than that for naive females. In contrast, oviposition experience in the absence of plant material did not influence theA. erviflight response. Oviposition attempts on aphid dummies without egg release did not reduce flight activity. WhenA. ervifemales were exposed to glass beads coated withAc. pisumcornicle secretion, a priming effect was observed, resulting, compared with naive females, in a significantly higher rate of oriented flights to the PHC. In contrast, oviposition attempts visually induced by colored aphid dummies did not influence flight behavior. A strong reaction to volatile cues from uninfested plants was induced by oviposition experience on newly infested broad bean plants. This appears to be a case of associative learning. In fact, uninfested broad bean plants are basically unattractive to naiveA. ervifemales. The results demonstrate that adult experience has a considerable influence onA. ervibehavior and may have important implications for biological control of natural pest aphid populations.  相似文献

In response to damage by herbivores, plants are known to emit infochemicals that enhance the effectiveness of insect parasitoids. Studies on plant–parasitoid interactions mediated by such infochemicals have focused on the tritrophic systems in which plants are infested by a single herbivore species. In natural ecosystems, however, plants are often simultaneously infested by several herbivorous species. The present study focuses on two herbivorous species that simultaneously attack crucifer plants and their respective parasitic wasps. We first show the specific responses of the two specialist parasitic wasps [Cotesia plutellae and C. glomerata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)] to infochemicals originating from cabbage plants (Brassica oleracea cv. Sikidori) infested by each of their respective host larvae [Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) and Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae)]. We then coupled the two tritrophic systems on the same cabbage plants. These experiments demonstrated the presence of indirect interactions between the two species of herbivores. Some parasitoids are restricted with respect to the host stage that they attack and even to a certain age within a stage. In this paper we investigate whether the parasitoidCotesia glomerata can discriminate between old and young caterpillar instars of its host,Pieris brassicae, before contacting these hosts, since contacts with older instars are very risky with a chance of being killed, due to the aggressive defensive behaviour of the caterpillars. Flight chamber dual choice tests showed that volatile chemicals emitted by Brussels sprouts plants (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) after feeding damage by 1st and 5th larval instars are equally attractive to the wasps. Simulated herbivore damage by 2nd and 5th larval instars, obtained by treating mechanically damaged leaves with carterpillar regurgitant, was also equally attractive, even when the wasps were exposed to repeated experience on different larval instars to increase their discriminatory ability. In contrast, single choice contact bioassays showed that the time spent searching on a leaf with feeding damage of 1st instar larvae was significantly longer than the time spent on 5th instar feeding damage or on mechanically damaged leaves. Both flight and contact bioassays did not show any effect of egg-related infochemicals. The results demonstrate thatC. glomerata can discriminate between young and old larval instars ofP. brassicae, without contacting the caterpillars. This is not done through volatile herbivore-induced synomones but through cues that are contacted after arrival at a caterpillar-infested leaf.  相似文献

The co‐occurrence of different antagonists on a plant can greatly affect infochemicals with ecological consequences for higher trophic levels. Here we investigated how the presence of a plant pathogen, the powdery mildew Erysiphe cruciferarum, on Brassica rapa affects (1) plant volatiles emitted in response to damage by a specialist herbivore, Pieris brassicae; (2) the attraction of the parasitic wasp Cotesia glomerata and (3) the performance of P. brassicae and C. glomerata. Plant volatiles were significantly induced by herbivory in both healthy and mildew‐infected plants, but were quantitatively 41% lower for mildew‐infected plants compared to healthy plants. Parasitoids strongly preferred Pieris‐infested plants to dually‐infested (Pieris + mildew) plants, and preferred dually infested plants over only mildew‐infected plants. The performance of P. brassicae was unaffected by powdery mildew, but C. glomerata cocoon mass was reduced when parasitized caterpillars developed on mildew‐infected plants. Thus, avoidance of mildew‐infested plants may be adaptive for C. glomerata parasitoids, whereas P. brassicae caterpillars may suffer less parasitism on mildew‐infected plants in nature. From a pest management standpoint, the concurrent presence of multiple plant antagonists can affect the efficiency of specific natural enemies, which may in turn have a negative impact on the regulation of pest populations.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to determine the extent to which host acceptance behaviour as related to host species, age, and defensive behaviour might explain the differences in host use that exist between two congeneric and sympatric species of parasitic wasps. Cotesia glomerata (L.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is gregarious and generalist on several species of Pieridae, whereas C. rubecula (Marshall) is solitary and specific to Pieris rapae (L.). Cotesia species differed in their responses to host species (P. brassicae (L.), P. napi (L.) and P. rapae) and developmental stage (early and late 1st, 2nd and 3rd instars). In no-choice tests, host acceptance by C. rubecula was higher for p. rapae and females did not distinguish among the 6 host ages. In contrast, when foraging for P. brassicae and P. napi, C. rubecula females more readily attacked early first instar. Cotesia glomerata showed a higher degree of behavioural plasticity towards acceptance of Pieris host species and host age than did C. rubecula. Cotesia glomerata females parasitized the three Pieris species and showed higher acceptance of first and second instars over third instar. Oviposition success was also influenced by host defensive behaviour. The frequency and the effectiveness of defensive behaviour rose with increasing age of the host, P. brassicae being the most aggressive Pieris species. Furthermore, the mean duration of C. glomerata oviposition was significantly reduced by the defensive reactions of P. brassicae, which would likely affect parasitoid fitness as oviposition time is positively correlated to clutch size in C. glomerata. Acceptance frequencies corresponded well to field reports of Pieris-Cotesia associations and to patterns of parasitoid larval performance, suggesting that the acceptance phase might be used as a reliable indicator of Cotesia host-specificity.  相似文献

Pieris rapae larvae secrete small oil droplets from their dorsal setae, which adhere to objects that touch them. The function of the droplets was studied in terms of both generalist and specialist predators. We tested the function of the droplets against ants under laboratory and field conditions. In the laboratory observation, Formica japonica ants that touched the larvae with their antennae initiated antennal cleaning and did not prey on the larvae. In the field, predation pressure by ants on larvae with oil droplets was significantly lower than on larvae from which oil droplets were removed. Thus, we concluded that the droplets had a defensive function. By contrast, oviposition by Cotesia glomerata, the specialist parasitic wasp of P. rapae larvae, was not affected by the presence of oil droplets. Furthermore, the wasps exhibited searching behavior and oviposition behavior towards filter paper which had been impregnated with the droplets substance, suggesting that the oil functions as a host-searching cue and an oviposition stimulant for C. glomerata. According to these results, the functions of the droplets are discussed with regard to the prey–predator interaction.  相似文献

In aphidiine parasitoids, resources for growth and adult body size increase with host instar used by ovipositing females, but the fitness consequences of body size on fitness are poorly documented. We compared the fitness of male and female A. nigripesadults that varied in size as a consequence of developing in different instars of their host Macrosiphum euphorbiae. When reproductive fitness was measured without considering time, female wasps from small and large hosts performed similarly, contributing 125–175 foundresses plus 100–180 sons to the next generation. However, when expressed as the innate capacity for increase (r m), female fitness correlated with host-induced variation of wasp size, indicating that micropopulations initiated by large wasps would increase faster. In a wind-tunnel, a sex pheromone plume from large female wasps induced more males to fly upwind when released at a distance of 50 cm downwind than small females, indicating that large females were sexually more attractive. With respect to male body size effects on fitness, large individuals performed similar to small ones, whether fitness was measured by lifetime mating frequency, fertile inseminations, or proportion of daughters among progeny born from their mates. When young naive males of unequal size were directly competing for mating with a virgin female, small and large males had equal mating success, and large individuals were no more successful than small ones at displacing a competitor already positioned on a receptive female. In a wind-tunnel test where males were scored on their ability to reach a female pheromone source, small and large males were equally affected by wind speed but reached the source located 50 cm downwind in equal proportions, suggesting similar capacity for finding mates by flying upwind. Our results indicate that despite host resources not being fixed at the time of attack for the koinobiont A. nigripes, fitness consequences of resource limitation by the mother may be perceived to be greater for daughters than sons, which would explain male-biased sex ratio in early-instar hosts.  相似文献

The parasitic wasp Cephalonomia tarsalis parasitizes larvae of the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis, which feed on wheat grains. In contrast to most other host–parasitoid systems studied so far, the grain beetles are highly mobile within their habitat, bulk of grains in grain stores. This should increase the wasps’ problem to locate the hosts. To study the host-finding strategy of C. tarsalis females, the reaction of wasps to different grain and host-derived odour sources was tested in a four-chamber-olfactometer. These experiments revealed that wasps were attracted by healthy grains and mechanically damaged grains. In direct comparison, healthy and mechanically damaged grains are equally attractive. Both potential sources of host-derived odours, host faeces and trail-traces of larvae on filter paper were attractive to the wasps. The response to trail-traces vanished 30 min after larvae had been removed from the filter paper. With respect to the specificity of the odours, it turned out that wasps were attracted to odours from the seed–host complexes from O. surinamensis and Oryzaephilus mercator and the non-host complex of larvae of the granary weevil Sitophilus granarius in wheat grains. Odours from the seed–host complex were preferred. From these results, we hypothesize that host habitat location in C. tarsalis is achieved by using grain-derived odours. Within the habitat, wasps search for kairomones from host faeces and host trails. Following these larval trails finally leads wasps to their hosts.  相似文献

  • 1 Daily patterns of oviposition and host-feeding were examined in Coccophagus bartletti Annecke & Insley. Females began to host-feed and oviposit during the second or third day after emergence. Thereafter, both activities occurred regularly.
  • 2 During long observation periods (5 h) most oviposition (93%) and host-feeding (90%) occurred within the first 3.5 h of wasps first encountering hosts. Experiments demonstrated that levels of activity were low for the rest of the day, and nocturnal oviposition occurred only if wasps had no alternative.
  • 3 Dissection of female wasps that had been exposed to hosts, or withheld from them, for given periods of time, revealed that activity levels are governed by egg availability. Dispersal activity may also be influenced by the physiological state of the ovaries.
  • 4 Production of a full complement of eggs (at 24±1°C (12 h L) and 18±1°C (12 h D)) took 48h or longer after host-feeding, and if wasps were withheld from hosts and provided with honey, the effects of egg resorption could be detected after about 10 days. Trends in oögenesis and oösorption in C. bartletti females seem not to conform with interpretations of oögenesis-oösorption cycles in other parasitoids.
  • 5 The pattern of activity exhibited by C. bartletti females is not inflexible, but the major aspects mentioned above are species-specific. In general, information is needed about daily and hourly patterns of parasitoid oviposition and host-feeding before experiments are designed to test theories of parasitoid behaviour. Interpretation may otherwise rest on assumptions about their physiological condition.

Terrestrial arthropods are commonly infected with maternally inherited symbionts that cause reproductive incompatibilities between hosts with differing infection status. Such symbionts can have major effects on the efficacy of a biological control program if releases are comprised of mixtures of differentially infected individuals. In this study, the ash whitefly parasitoid, Encarsia inaron (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) from Arizona was surveyed for the presence of heritable bacterial symbionts; experiments were also performed to test for two phenotypes known to be caused by Encarsia symbionts—cytoplasmic incompatibility and changes in oviposition behavior and host use. E. inaron has successfully reduced ash whitefly to non-pest status in all three locations it has been released (California, Arizona, and North Carolina) and is also notable as one of the only Encarsia species that is not autoparasitic, with both male and female wasps developing as primary parasitoids of whiteflies. We show that E. inaron is infected with both Wolbachia and Cardinium. While there was no effect of the symbionts on oviposition behavior or host use, crosses between doubly infected male wasps and uninfected females resulted in a severe reduction in the number of female offspring; male offspring production was unaffected. This study thus serves as a further warning that ascribing a phenotype to a symbiont with confidence depends on eliminating the possibility of a mixed infection, and establishes E. inaron as a useful model for dissecting WolbachiaCardinium interactions.  相似文献

Although it is well known that the application of broad‐spectrum synthetic insecticides reduces the effectiveness of natural enemies, the details of the actual mechanisms, including the lethal and sublethal effects of this reduction, are not fully understood. The inhibitory effects of a pyrethroid insecticide (permethrin), Adion 20% EC on the flight responses, host‐searching behaviour and foraging behaviour of Cotesia vestalis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a larval parasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), were investigated under laboratory conditions. In choice trials, the wasps showed significant preference for P. xylostella‐infested Komatsuna plants over insecticide‐treated plants, suggesting an inhibitory effect of the insecticide on the flight response of C. vestalis. When offered a pair of plants, the wasps showed a significant preference for P. xylostella‐infested plants compared to uninfested plants. However, significantly more wasps were attracted to infested permethrin‐treated plants than to uninfested plants, suggesting that the wasps are attracted to the volatile infochemicals from the infested plants, even if treated with permethrin. The searching time was significantly shorter and the mortality of C. vestalis adults on the insecticide‐treated plants significantly higher than in the control plants treated with distilled water. These results suggest that the application of the insecticide had an inhibitory effect on the wasps’‐searching behaviour and consequently reduced the effectiveness of C. vestalis as a biological control agent against P. xylostella. In addition, the strength of the inhibitory effect of permethrin on the attraction of the wasps to the plants is critical to the survival of C. vestalis. Our results suggest that the attraction of the wasps to the permethrin‐treated infested plants increases the risk of their exposure to this insecticide.  相似文献

Cotesia rubecula Marshall (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a specialist larval parasitoid of the butterfly Pieris rapae L. which itself feeds almost exclusively upon cruciferous plants. Female wasps are attracted to the odour of host-infested plant (plant-host complex: PHC) and the probability of flights in a wind tunnel depends on females' prior oviposition experience with the PHC and on the concentration of the PHC odour. This study considers the effect of both factors on characteristics of oriented flight upwind towards the PHC. The flight track parameters that we measured and calculated were not significantly affected by these factors. C. rubecula females exhibited high average flight velocity and relatively straight flight tracks. There was a considerable variability between individuals, however, in their odour-modulated upwind flight tracks. Some females generated a zigzagging upwind flight track similar to those commonly observed from male moths responding to female sex pheromone. Other females flew along a straight track directly upwind. The flight tracks of most female wasps were intermediate between these extremes. The full range of these flight performances was observed to all experimental treatments.  相似文献

We conducted laboratory and field experiments to elucidate the life history of Ixodiphagus hookeri, a parasitoid of the ixodid tick Amblyomma variegatum in Western Kenya. Ixodiphagus hookeri females oviposited in unfed host nymphs as well as engorged nymphs, but rarely in engorged larvae. While I. hookeri developed to adults in engorged nymphs, the eggs laid in unfed nymphs disappeared within 2 days after oviposition. As temperature increased, development time of I. hookeri from oviposition to adult emergence in engorged nymphs decreased from 46 days at 23 °C to 35 days at 28 °C, and their immature survival in engorged nymphs decreased from 67% at 23 °C to 22% at 28 °C. No parasitoid adult emerged from hosts at 30 °C. Individual hosts parasitized by single females produced 42–53 adult wasps, 73% of which were females. As a typical pro-ovigenic species, I. hookeri females had an average of 84 mature eggs at emergence and lived only for a few days. When laboratory-reared, unfed nymphs of A. variegatum were attached to cattle for 4–9 days in subsistence farmers’ fields in Western Kenya, 25% of the engorged nymphs and 4% of the unfed nymphs on cattle were parasitized by I. hookeri, demonstrating that I. hookeri females search for and oviposit in A. variegatum nymphs on cattle. Unlike other strains of I. hookeri that overwinter as eggs in unfed nymphs, I. hookeri could continuously reproduce throughout the year in Western Kenya.  相似文献

The study investigates differences in the oviposition pattern of a braconid parasitoid, Cotesia glomerata (Linn.) in Pieris brassicae (Linn.) in relation to their use of different cruciferous food plants. The response of P. brassicae to superparasitism and consequences for the parasitoid were examined in order to elucidate the ecological significance of this behaviour. Female parasitoid located various crucifers and searched for host more frequently almost on all the host plants tested i.e. cabbage, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, broccoli and radish. According to the estimated relative number of female locating hosts, cabbage was the most attractive plant for C. glomerata and total number of eggs laid in host larvae feeding on it was higher than in larvae feeding on other plants. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that superparasitism reduced survivorship of P. brassicae larvae. Superparasitism lengthened parasitoid development and prolonged the feeding period of host larvae. Sex ratio and the body weight of emergent wasps correlated negatively with brood size. Despite a trade-off between maximising brood size and optimising the fitness of individual offspring, two or three ovipositions on P. brassicae larvae resulted in a greater female dry mass than did a single oviposition on the host. Thus, superparasitism might be of adaptive significance under certain circumstances, especially when host density is low and unparasitized hosts are rare in a habitat.  相似文献

Summary We studied interactions among collards, Brassica oleracea var. acephala, the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) and its parasitoid Diadegma insulare (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) by manipulating plant nitrogen (N) concentrations in field and laboratory experiments. Parasitoid abundance strongly reflected DBM abundance and was related to total leaf N. Parasitism rates were high (70.7%) and density-independent. Wasp sex ratios varied markedly (3–93% female) in response to the herbivores, the plants, or both. Higher proportions of female wasps emerged from DBM larvae on plants with high leaf N than on unfertilized plants. More female wasps also emerged from larvae parasitized as larger instars. We suggest that wasps have the potential to control DBM populations through long-term numerical responses mediated by variable sex ratios.  相似文献

Parasitoids are confronted with many different infochemicals of their hosts and food plants during host selection. Here, we investigated the effect of kairomones from the adult host Pieris brassicae and of cues present on Brussels sprout plants infested by P. brassicae eggs on the behavioral response of the egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens. Additionally, we tested whether the parasitoid’s acceptance of P. brassicae eggs changes with different host ages. The wasps did not discriminate between olfactory cues from mated and virgin females or between mated females and males of P. brassicae. T. evanescens randomly climbed on the butterflies, showing a phoretic behavior without any preference for a certain sex. The parasitoid was arrested on leaf parts next to 1-day-old host egg masses. This arrestment might be due to cues deposited during oviposition. The wasps parasitized host eggs up to 3 days old equally well. Our results were compared with former studies on responses by T .brassicae showing that T. evanescens makes less use of infochemicals from P. brassicae than T. brassicae.  相似文献

Adult females of the larval parasitoidCotesia glomerata (L.) respond to chemical cues associated with feeding damage inflicted on cabbage plants by its host,Pieris brassicae (L.). The use of these infochemicals by the parasitoid during selection of the most suitable host instar was investigated. The parasitoid can successfully parasitize first-instar host larvae, while contacts with fifth-instar larvae are very risky since these caterpillars react to parasitization attempts by biting, spitting, and hitting, resulting in a high probability of the parasitoid being seriously injured or killed. Observations of the locomotor behavior of individual wasps on leaves with feeding damage inflicted by the first and the fifth larval instars and on host silk and frass showed that several cues affect the duration of searching by the parasitoids after reaching a leaf: cues on the margin of the feeding damage and cues in the host frass and silk. Whole frass, silk, and hexane extracts of frass obtained from first-instar elicited parasitoid's searching behavior significantly longer than frass, silk, and hexane extract of frass from the fifth instar. The results demonstrate thatC. glomerata can discriminate between first instars, which are more suitable hosts, and fifth instars ofP. brassicae without contacting the caterpillars, by exploiting instar-related cues.  相似文献

Female wasps of the solitary egg parasitoid Gryon japonicum (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) allocate male and female offspring in a particular sequence to successive hosts. Male eggs are typically laid in the second host, and the sex allocation sequence is reset after a certain period of time. The present study aimed to examine the underlying mechanism to hold information and reset the sequence by using eggs of Riptortus pedestris (Heteroptera: Alydidae) as hosts. After completion of initial oviposition, a female wasp was treated by cold anesthesia for 1 h, exposure to a parasitized host for 3 h, or being kept at 15°C in darkness for 24 h, and then presented with three host eggs. Cold‐anesthetized females did not reset the sex allocation sequence, indicating that cold anesthesia did not block the mechanism of holding information about oviposition order. Frequent encounters with parasitized hosts were also insufficient to reset the sequence. However, being kept in cool, dark conditions significantly affected resetting, suggesting that low temperature lengthened the time required to reset the sequence. This implies that it is probable that the mechanism to hold information and reset sex allocation sequence in G. japonicum involves metabolism.  相似文献

The relative suitability of four host plants was determined both for unparasitized Pieris brassicae L. caterpillars and for Cotesia glomerata (L.) developing in P. brassicae. For unparasitized P. brassicae, growth rate and pupal weight were highest on Brussels sprouts and Swedish turnip, intermediate on rape, and lowest on nasturtium. In contrast, C. glomerata larval developmental rate and adult longevity were greatest for wasps from P. brassicae reared on nasturtium.On all four plants, the host-parasitoid complex attained a lower final weight than unparasitized P. brassicae, and it is argued that this difference is due primarily to reduced consumption by parasitized P. brassicae. Among parasitized caterpillars, however, complex weight was positively correlated with clutch size, suggesting that C. glomerata larvae are able to partially counteract the effect of parasitization per se on host consumption.The host plants of P. brassicae appear to face an evolutionary dilemma: in order to increase the total mass of parasitoids produced, they must suffer greater loss of foliage. This trade-off, if common in nature, may represent a formidable constraint on coevolution between host plants and parasitoids.  相似文献
