The role of capacitance in the water balance of Andean giant rosette species   总被引:11,自引:6,他引:5  
Abstract Pith water storage capacity and its role in plant-water relations were studied in seven giant rosette species of the genus Espeletia from the Venezuelan Andes. Readily available water from the pith was calculated to be capable of sustaining mean transpiration for up to 2.5 h. The relative importance of water stored in the pith, however, differed among species. The species that grow in the higher and colder environments tended to have a greater capacitance than the species that grow in the lower and less extreme environments. The pith volume per unit leaf area (PV/LA) was found to be a good indicator of the relative water storage capacity of the adult individuals of each species. Diurnal fluctuations in leaf water potential were not as pronounced in the species with higher PV/LA values. The species-specific PV/LA was highly correlated with the leaf turgor loss point and with the total resistance to water flow from soil to leaves. These results suggested that species-specific capacitance in the genus Espeletia is a response to temperature-limited soil water availability and that cold tropical environments with frequent subfreezing temperatures tend to select for high water storage capacity in giant rosette plants.  相似文献

From March 2001 to December 2002, we studied the reproductive phenology, pollination ecology, and growth rates of Espeletia grandiflora Humb. and Bonpl. (Asteraceae), a giant caulescent rosette from the Páramos of the Eastern Andes of Colombia. Espeletia grandiflora was found to be predominantly allogamous and strongly self-incompatible. Bumblebees (Bombus rubicundus and B. funebris) were the major pollinators of E. grandiflora, although moths, hummingbirds, flies, and beetles also visited flowers. Inflorescence development began in March and continued through August to September. Plants flowered for 30 - 96 days with a peak from the beginning of October through November. The percentage of flowering plants strongly differed among size classes and between both years. Seed dispersal occurred as early as September through May of the following year. The average absolute growth rate for juveniles and adults rate was 7.6 cm/year. Given the scarcity of floral visitors at high altitudes due to climatic conditions, we suggest that even small contributions from a wide range of pollinators might be advantageous for pollination of E. grandiflora. Long-term studies on different populations of E. grandiflora are required to determine if the high growth rates are representative, to quantify the variation in the flowering behavior within and among populations, and to establish if nocturnal pollination is a trait that is exclusive to our population of E. grandiflora.  相似文献

Abstract. The influence of insulating dead leaves on water balance in Espeletia timotensis Cuatr., an Andean caulescent giant rosette plant, was studied under field and laboratory conditions. Removal of the dead leaf layer surrounding the stem changed the pattern of diurnal stem temperature variation and produced transient and permanent effects on water balance. The pattern of liquid water flow resistance increase at low stem temperatures suggested that much of the water flow in the stem was through living membranes, probably those of the pith cells. The pith was determined to be an important source of stored water for daily transpirational needs. The lethal effects of dead leaf removal were attributed to one or more of the following causes: (1) inhibition of pith recharge by subfreezing stem temperatures; (2) embolisms in stem xylem; (3) freezing injury to pith tissue. The results suggested that an insulating layer of marcescent leaves and the presence of an internal water reservoir closer to the rosette than the soil water are important adaptations for maintenance of a favourable water balance in tropical alpine habitats where freezing temperatures occur regularly but last only a few hours.  相似文献

负密度制约假说主要描述由于资源竞争、有害生物侵害(比如病原微生物、食草动物捕食)等, 同种个体之间发生的相互损害行为; 它主要强调同种个体之间的相互作用, 解释自然群落物种共存的机理; 负密度制约机制主要在小尺度上降低群落内同种个体生长率, 同时提高个体死亡率, 从而为其他物种的生存提供空间和资源, 促进物种共存。目前负密度制约假说的检验研究主要侧重密度制约、距离制约、群落补偿效应等三个方面。最近, 研究者又探讨了近缘物种之间由于对相似资源的竞争所产生的负效应, 扩展了负密度制约假说, 进而提出异群保护假说和谱系多样性制约假说。负密度制约假说引起生态学家长久的探讨和关注, 世界范围内大尺度森林动态样地的建立, 又为探索不同尺度上密度制约效应的研究提供了条件。然而目前的研究仍然存在不足, 比如负密度制约假说的检验受到其他因素的干扰、区域研究不平衡等。因此, 生态学家们仍然怀疑负密度制约效应调节群落物种共存的重要性, 但是目前的研究还没有发现否定负密度制约假说的充分证据。  相似文献

松阔混交林和常绿阔叶林是亚热带地区天然次生林代表性的森林类型,通过研究主要树种分布变动趋势,可以有效地指导森林经营措施。在该地区4个1hm~2典型样地,在0—30m尺度范围内综合分析了主要树种的空间分布格局及种间关联性,并对同一树种分发育阶段在不同森林群落中的种群空间分布格局进行了比较,以探讨亚热带地区天然次生林群落空间格局形成和种群维持机制。样地1和2为松阔混交林,其中样地1的马尾松密度较低,样地3和4为常绿阔叶林。研究结果表明:(1)以完全随机模型为零假设时,样地1的主要种群在小尺度(10 m)呈聚集分布,随尺度增加呈随机分布;样地2—4的主要种群在所有尺度呈聚集分布,随尺度增加聚集强度逐渐减弱;以异质泊松模型为零假设时,4个样地的主要种群在大部分尺度呈随机分布;(2)青冈和苦槠的小树(5.0 cm≤DBH10.0 cm)在4样地的所有尺度以聚集分布为主,大树(DBH≥10.0 cm)在松阔混交林样地呈随机分布趋势,但在常绿阔叶林样地青冈在0—20 m尺度、苦槠在所有尺度呈聚集分布;(3)松阔混交林中建群种马尾松和其他树种的种间关联性,在样地1的小尺度为负相关,随尺度增加为不相关,在样地2的所有尺度为负相关;常绿阔叶林中建群种青冈和其他树种的种间关联性在在样地3的小尺度为负相关,随尺度增加为不相关,在样地4的所有尺度为负相关;所有伴生树种的种间关联性以负相关为主。结果说明,种群空间分布格局及其关联性随群落结构和空间尺度的不同而出现变化,在松阔混交林和常绿阔叶林群落格局形成中除了扩散限制和生境异质性以外,密度制约机制在松阔混交林中发挥了重要作用,而在常绿阔叶林中其作用随着树木生活史阶段的提高而减弱。  相似文献

This study was conducted to analyze the community structure of mayflies and stabilizing points for the local populations in relation to longitudinal changes in the Keumho River, Korea. A total of 22 ephemeropteran species occurred in the main riverine system during the sampling period of 3 years. The results indicated that Baetis fuscatus (mean density of 117.3 individuals/m2), Ecdyonurus levis (54.1), Uracanthella rufa (51.3) and Caenis KUa (49.9) comprised the major species group of the ephemeropteran community. The results of statistical analyses showed that these four species were distinguished from the others in terms of their mean densities. Longitudinal patterns based on total species numbers and numbers of individuals were characterized into three phases. A new approach was applied to analyze stabilized points for local populations based on the River Continuum Concept and density‐dependent mechanisms among local populations in a metapopulation. Stabilized local populations of B. fuscatus and E. levis occurred coincidentally at two points that were approximately 45 and 75 km away from the Youngchun Dam. Caenis KUa was locally stabilized at two points that were 40 and 60 km away from the dam. Uracanthella rufa showed only one stabilized local population at a point approximately 80 km away from the dam. The diversity index for the ephemeropteran community was compared with that calculated for the benthic macroinvertebrate community, and their similarity is discussed.  相似文献

利用林分空间结构抽样调查技术,采用测量抽样点到其第k株最近相邻木的距离(距离法)进行密度估计,分别选取k=4和k=6两种距离调查方法进行分析,并对Prodan、Persson、Thompson 3种不同密度估计方法的预估能力进行检验.结果表明:不同预估方法的预估能力受林木水平分布格局影响.Prodan法在均匀分布的林分中有较强的预估能力,随着分布格局聚集性增加会产生越来越大的偏差;Persson计算法在均匀及随机分布的林分中产生正偏差,但随着分布格局聚集性增加产生的相对误差接近0,预估能力增强;Thompson计算法对随机或接近随机分布的林分有较强的预估能力,而在均匀分布和聚集分布的格局中分别产生正偏差和负偏差.抽样点为49个时,选择6株木与4株木预估能力无显著差异,因此,密度估计可与选取4株相邻木的空间结构参数调查整合在一起.  相似文献

以1997、2001、2005、2009和2013年遥感影像为基础数据,对快速城市化地区——北京市顺义区进行景观分类,构建基于景观干扰度和景观脆弱度的生态风险指数,利用GS+和ArcGIS软件进行空间自相关和地统计学分析,研究景观生态风险的时空变化特征.结果表明:研究区内的生态风险指数存在一定的空间正相关关系,随着粒度的增大,呈现下降的趋势;在一定的粒度范围内(<12 km),空间自相关性具有明显的尺度依赖特征.1997—2013年,空间异质性中的随机变异均小于空间自相关变异,由空间自相关部分引起的空间异质性占据主导地位.研究期间,研究区生态风险水平一直以中等生态风险程度为主,较高生态风险和较低生态风险区域面积增加,而中等生态风险区域面积逐渐减少.低生态风险区主要位于顺义区机场区域及东南部的林地;高生态风险区主要位于水域景观区域,如潮白河两岸.  相似文献

The shape of the relationship between local and regional richness has been used to infer the relative strength of local vs. regional processes in structuring communities. While most empirical work has demonstrated linear relationships, recent reviews suggest that prior work has contained biases by selecting communities from different biological provinces and by defining large-scale local communities. We evaluate the utility of inferring interaction strength from local–regional relationships by examining 11 years of data from small-scale, annual plant communities at one site with strong local interactions. Both winter and summer annual plant assemblages exhibited linear rather than saturating relationships over a wide range of regional pool sizes. Our empirical work supports recent theory suggesting that local–regional relationships cannot be used to infer the strength of interactions in communities.  相似文献

Invasive species are a significant threat to global biodiversity, but our understanding of how invasive species impact native communities across space and time remains limited. Based on observations in an old field in Southeast Michigan spanning 35 years, our study documents significant impacts of habitat change, likely driven by the invasion of the shrub, Elaeagnus umbellata, on the nest distribution patterns and population demographics of a native ant species, Formica obscuripes. Landcover change in aerial photographs indicates that E. umbellata expanded aggressively, transforming a large proportion of the original open field into dense shrubland. By comparing the ant's landcover preferences before and after the invasion, we demonstrate that this species experienced a significant unfavorable change in its foraging areas. We also find that shrub landcover significantly moderates aggression between nests, suggesting nests are more related where there is more E. umbellata. This may represent a shift in reproductive strategy from queen flights, reported in the past, to asexual nest budding. Our results suggest that E. umbellata may affect the spatial distribution of F. obscuripes by shifting the drivers of nest pattern formation from an endogenous process (queen flights), which led to a uniform pattern, to a process that is both endogenous (nest budding) and exogenous (loss of preferred habitat), resulting in a significantly different clustered pattern. The number and sizes of F. obscuripes nests in our study site are projected to decrease in the next 40 years, although further study of this population's colony structures is needed to understand the extent of this decrease. Elaeagnus umbellata is a common invasive shrub, and similar impacts on native species might occur in its invasive range, or in areas with similar shrub invasions.  相似文献

1. Habitat deterioration is a major problem world-wide as a result of processes such as change in land use, introduced species, human disturbance and exploitation of food supplies. Many studies have shown that habitat change can have considerable effect on the numbers of individuals using a site. For migratory species, however, the consequences for the total population cannot be deduced from local studies.
2. For a migratory species, the change in total population size Δ N , as a consequence of habitat change in the wintering area, can be calculated from Δ N  =  LM γ d '/( b ' +  d '), where γ is the expected proportional change in the number of birds using a site as a result of the habitat change, L is the area affected, M is the density of individuals using the site prior to habitat change, b ' is the strength of the per capita density-dependent breeding output, and d ' is the strength of the per capita density-dependent winter mortality. Similarly the consequences of habitat change in the breeding area can be calculated from Δ N  =  LM γ b '/( b ' +  d ').
3. The same approach can be used for predicting the consequences of improvements in habitat quality.
4. A worked example is given to illustrate how this approach could be used to predict the consequences for the total population of changes in the food supply of oystercatchers within one estuary.
5. There is a need for more measures of γ, the expected proportional change in the number of birds using a site as a result of various forms of habitat deterioration, and the strengths of density dependence.  相似文献

Aim To estimate invasiveness of exotic plant species, many studies have used the frequency of occurrence within a defined region. This measure is informative on how widespread exotics are, however, it does not inform on their local dominance, which is crucial for conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The aim of the present study is to determine if regional frequency of occurrence of exotic plant species indeed is indicative of their local dominance. We also determined which plant traits and other factors predict regional and local frequencies best. Location The Netherlands. Methods We used information on exotic plant species established in The Netherlands and compared traits relating to their frequency of occurrence regionally (the entire country) and their frequency of dominance locally (in 1–100 m2 quadrats). We created minimal adequate models with factors explaining regional frequency and frequency of local dominance of 111 exotic plant species in The Netherlands. Results The model that used plant traits to explain regional frequency of exotic plant species differed from the models that best explained their frequency of local dominance. Regionally, the factors that correlated with frequency were: life form, height, polyploidy, length of flowering season, residence time, human use and origin. The factors that correlated to frequency of local dominance were lateral vegetative spread and residence time. Main conclusions We conclude that plant traits relating to the regional frequency of exotic plant species differ from those that relate to their frequency of local dominance. The implication of our results is that predictive studies on plant invasiveness based on regional frequencies may not be indicative of the local impacts. Since the prediction of local impacts is crucial for conservation and risk assessment, our study emphasized the need for better information on the local abundance of exotic invaders.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyze indicators of soil restoration during secondary succession in a heterogeneous valley in the high tropical Andes. A combination of chronosequence and permanent plot methods was used to detect changes in this heterogeneous matrix. Thirty-six plots with different fallow times (1–9 years) and four noncultivated plots with natural vegetation (páramo) were sampled twice in a 3-year interval (1996 and 1999). The following soil properties were determined: total C and N, pH, exchangeable bases, cation exchange capacity, and microbial biomass N (MB-N). Using the chronosequence approach, successional increases in soil pH and Mg were detected, pointing to these variables as indicators of soil restoration during the fallow period. Comparing the noncultivated páramo with the fallow plots, a significant decrease in MB-N was found, suggesting that this is a sensitive agricultural disturbance indicator. The permanent plot analysis failed to detect successional trends in any of the study variables, probably as a result of a lack of sensitivity of the indicators used within the 3-year interval. Nevertheless, a strong acidification was detected by the permanent plot method when fallow plots were cultivated. We conclude that the size of important soil components such as total soil organic matter or microbial biomass is not a sensitive soil restoration indicator in these heterogeneous mountain systems but that other integrative variables such as pH could be more sensitive to successional changes in key soil processes (e.g., nitrification or nutrient losses).  相似文献
