Summary We estimated genetic relatedness among worker nestmates of the facultative slave-making antFormica subnuda (28 colonies), and the obligate slavemakers F. subintegra (19 colonies) andPolyergus breviceps (14 colonies) using horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Relatedness among nestmates was 0.42 inF. subnuda, 0.70 inF. subintegra, and 0.49 inP. breviceps on average. Relatedness ofF. subintegra workers did not differ significantly from 0.75 indicating that this species is monogynous, though some females may mate multiply. The estimates ofF. subnuda andP. breviceps were significantly lower than 0.75 and, consequently, colonies were polygynous and/or poly-androus. The inbreeding coefficients were close to zero in all species suggesting random mating. We suggest that owing to practical monogyny and obligate nature of its slavemaking,F. subintegra is a good species for tests of sex allocation theory.  相似文献

We estimated queen mating frequency, genetic relatedness among workers, and worker reproduction in Vespa crabro flavofasciata using microsatellite DNA markers. Of 20 colonies examined, 15 contained queens inseminated by a single male, 3 colonies contained queens inseminated by two males, and 2 colonies contained queens inseminated by three males. The genetic relatedness among workers was estimated to be 0.73±0.003 (mean±SE). For this high relatedness, kin selection theory predicts a potential conflict between queens and workers over male production. To verify whether males are derived from queens or workers, 260 males from 13 colonies were genotyped at four microsatellite loci. We found that all of the males were derived from the queens. This finding was further supported by the fact that only 33 of 2,990 workers dissected had developed ovaries. These workers belonged to 2 of the 20 colonies. There was no relationship between queen mating frequency and worker reproduction, and no workers produced male offspring in any of the colonies. These results suggest that male production dominated by queens in V. crabro flavofasciata is possibly due to worker policing.  相似文献

Expression of fimbriation was studied inEscherichia coli K-12 CA8000 HfrH, and itscya, crp and MS2 resistant mutants. The cells of cya+ crp+ parent strain were observed to be flagellated bacilli, lacking fimbriae, unable to agglutinate erythrocytes and deficient in ability to produce surface pellicle during growth in stationary culture. The cells ofcya andcrp mutants were observed to be cocci or coccobacilli devoid of flagella, having haemagglutinating activity, fimbriated and capable of producing surface pellicle in stationary cultures. The fimbriation and haemagglutinating activities were lower incya mutants grown with cAMP supplementation. Thecya andcrp mutants produced relatively small, smooth and compact colonies consisting mostly of fimbriated cells, like those of earlier described Fimσ mutants. Thecya + crp+ MS2 resistant mutant produced large sized colonies like those of parent but was deficient in conjugal donor ability. It resembledcya andcrp mutants in haemagglutinating and fimbriation properties. Thecya andcrp mutants have been earlier shown to be deficient in several Tra functions including conjugal donor ability. It is concluded thatEscherichia coli K-12 cells express fimbriation when Tra functions of F-plasmid carried in them are not expressed either due to deficiency of active cAMP-receptor protein complex or mutation in F-plasmid or when F-plasmid is absent.  相似文献

Phytogeographic, ecological, morphological, anatomical, cytological, isozyme, and endonuclease restriction site evidence is presented demonstrating thatPoa labradorica is of intergeneric hybrid origin betweenDupontia fisheri subsp.psilosantha (pistillate parent) andPoa eminens (staminate parent).Poa labradorica is endemic to recently deglaciated areas of northern Quebec and Labrador which are within the overlapping range of the putative parents. Incapable of sexual reproduction,P. labradorica dominates large areas of coastal marsh through vigorous production of rhizomes. Most morphological, anatomical, cytological, isozyme, and DNA characters studied inP. labradorica showed states intermediate or additive to those of the putative parents.  相似文献

Development and structure of seed-coat were examined in 16 species ofCorydalis and two species ofDicentra. Neither the tegmen (developed ii) nor the testa (developed oi) is multiplicative during seed development. Mature seed-coat is consistent in all the species examined in having mechanical structure in the exo- or endotesta. Differences are found in (1) which of the integumentary layers develops into the main mechanical layer (exotesta or endotesta), (2) whether a mesotesta is differentiated or not, and (3) whether the endotegmen is persistent as a layer of thick-walled cells, is persistent only partially, or is thoroughly degenerated. Theses seed-coat characters distinguish six groups of species (i.e., four groups inCorydalis and two inDicentra), which represent well infrageneric taxa proposed on the other characters. Evidence from seed-coat anatomy further suggests thatDicentra spectabilis (subg.Hedycapnos) retains the primitive (endotestal) seed-coat of Fumarioideae.  相似文献

Many invasive ant species, such as the Argentine ant or the red imported fire ant, have huge colonies with thousands of mass-foraging workers, which quickly monopolise resources and therefore represent a considerable threat to the native ant fauna. Cardiocondyla obscurior and several other species of this myrmicine genus have similarly been transferred throughout the tropics by human activities. However, because their colonies are tiny and workers forage solitarily, Cardiocondyla are often not recognized as successful invaders. Here, we document that the life history of Cardiocondyla closely resembles that of the more conspicuous tramp species, with polygyny, intranidal mating, budding, worker sterility, low genetic variability, and possibly also unicoloniality. Given that introduced Cardiocondyla may locally reach a very high population density, the effects of these stealthy invaders on the native arthropod fauna should receive more attention. A 1330-bp DNA sequence with two XcmI cassettes was inserted into pUC18 to construct an efficient XcmI T-vector parent plasmid, pYEMF. The large size of the inserted DNA fragment improved T-vector cleavage efficiency, and guaranteed good separation of the molecular components after restriction digestion. The pYEMF-T-vector generated from parent plasmid pYEMF permits blue/white colony screening; cloning efficiency analysis showed that most white colonies (>75%) were putative transformants which carried the cloning product. The sequence analysis and design approach presented here will facilitate applications in the fields of molecular biology and genetic engineering.  相似文献

Summary Thirty-five hexaploid and twenty octoploid primary triticales (xTriticosecale Wittmack) derived from homozygous wheat and rye inbred lines were used (1) to investigate the parental wheat, rye, and interaction effects and (2) to estimate quantitative genetic parameters for agronomic traits. The winter triticales were tested in four environments in a three-replicate split-plot design with drilled 1 m2 plots. Superior performance of hexaploid triticales as compared to the octoploids was revealed. Substantial genetic variation and high heritability estimates were found for nearly all of the characters investigated. Estimates of wheat, rye, and wheat×rye interaction variance components disclosed parental main effects to be the most important source of genetic variation in primary triticales. The rye parent was dominant for all characters affecting fertility, and the wheat parent was more important for vegetative development. Character correlations were very similar for triticales of both ploidy levels. The lack of association between grain yield and tillering and the positive correlation between kernels per spike and thousand kernel weight indicated physiological disorders specific for primary triticales.  相似文献

We examined the genetic and spatial structure of Leptothorax ambiguus in a Vermont site. Nests of this tiny ant species have variable queen number and comprise larger polydomous colonies, as do their closest relatives in North America. Nests are patchily distributed in the forest, and sometimes occur in local abundance. We collected 121 nests in four years from plots in which all nests were mapped; furthermore, we subjected nests collected in two separate years to starch gel electrophoresis and estimated relatedness according to the Queller—Goodnight (1989) algorithm. Queens that share a nest site also share 33% of their alleles on average, and relatedness among worker nestmates is about 0.5. The existence of diploid males and nonzero F-values demonstrate inbreeding in this species, an unusual phenomenon for social insects in general. Mapping data showed that nests with like genotypes tended to cluster in space, forming polydomous colonies. Colonies consisted of 1–6 nest subunits, and about half of all colonies were polygynous. We compare these features of L. ambiguus to its close relative L. longispinosus and a European congener L. acervorum. These comparisons allow us to conclude that an interplay between ecological and genetic factors produces the observed pattern of multiple queening and nest spatial distribution in this species.  相似文献

Porella platyphylla andP. cordaeana are genetically well differentiated in Europe (I = 0.486). Isozyme data from 156 European colonies reveal thatP. baueri is polyploid and could be an interspecific hybrid between these two species. It is characterized by large lobe cells, toothed margins of the female bracts, and ciliate perianth mouth. Correspondence analysis using morphological characters revealed that its colonies cluster into two geographicallý separated groups, similar to one or other of the putative parental species. These results agree with the genetic analysis, that also revealed two main allelic associations, each with a distinct geographical range. We hypothesize that this pattern was produced by introgression subsequent to hybridization, or by gene silencing. The discovery of this new, allopolyploid species suggests that hybridization is an important evolutionary process in liverworts.  相似文献

The flight ability ofDrosophila aldrichi (Patterson & Crow) andD. buzzatii (Patterson & Wheeler) using tethered flights, was measured with respect to age-related changes, genetic variation and adult body size variation induced by rearing at different larval densities.Drosophila buzzatii flew for much longer thanD. aldrichi, especially females, but age-related changes in flight duration were significant only forD. aldrichi. Effects of body size on flight ability were significant inD. buzzatii, but not inD. aldrichi. InD. buzzatii, there was a significant genotype-environment interaction (larval density × line) for flight duration, with short and average flight duration isofemale lines showing longer flights, but a long flight duration line shorter flights as body size decreased (i.e., as larval density increased). Heritability estimates for flight duration were similar in the two species, but flight duration showed no significant genetic correlations with developmental time, body size or wing dimensions (except for one wing dimension inD. buzzatii). Although not significantly different between the species, heritabilities for life-history traits (adult size and developmental time) showed contrasting patterns — with higher heritability for body size (body weight and thorax length) inD. buzzatii, and higher for developmental time inD. aldrichi. In agreement with limited previous field evidence,D. buzzatii is better adapted for colonization than isD. aldrichi.  相似文献

Summary Auxotrophic and drug resistant colonies of Alternaria alternata were selected following UV mutagenesis of spheroplasts and genetic transformation with pDH25. Intrastrain cell fusion of certain A. alternata parental strains induced by polyethylene glycol occurred at an average rate of 0.35%; interstrain fusions occurred at a rate of 0.08%. Mitotic recombination resulted from UV mutagenesis of spheroplasts from several fusants from 6hy1 × 1ar1. Fusants synthesized different levels of the cyclic tetrapeptide, tentoxin; some colonies produced higher levels than either parent. These results demonstrate that spheroplast fusion may have a potential application for genetic analysis of secondary metabolite production and for strain improvement in A. alternata.Mention of a trademark of proprietary product does not constitute a guarantee or warranty by the U. InDrosophila montana andD. littoralis (species of theD. virilis group), females use male courtship song in their mate choice in wild preferring males which produce short and dense sound pulses (Aspi and Hoikkala, 1995). In the present study these song characters were found to be repeatable among overwintered males. Male progenies of wild-caught flies reared in the laboratory, and inD. montana also the males collected in wild before overwintering, exhibited very little variation between males in these characters. Contrary to pulse characters, pulse train characters measured forD. montana song varied significantly between laboratory-reared males. Our findings suggest that inD. montana andD. littoralis song characters playing a part in sexual selection in the wild are more condition dependent than song characters which are not the direct targets of female choice.  相似文献

Recent advances in morphometrics and genetics have led to the discovery of numerous cryptic species in coral reef ecosystems. A prime example is the Montastraea annularis scleractinian coral species complex, in which morphological, genetic, and reproductive data concur on species boundaries, allowing evaluation of long-term patterns of speciation and evolutionary innovation. Here we test for cryptic species in the Atlantic species, Montastraea cavernosa, long recognized as polymorphic. Our modern samples consist of 94 colonies collected at four locations (Belize, Panamá, Puerto Rico in the Caribbean; S?o Tomé in the Eastern Atlantic). Our fossil samples consist of 78 colonies from the Plio-Pleistocene of Costa Rica and Panamá. Landmark morphometric data were collected on thin sections of 46 modern and 78 fossil colonies. Mahalanobis distances between colonies were calculated using Bookstein coordinates, revealing two modern and four fossil morphotypes. The remaining 48 of the 94 modern colonies were assigned to morphotype using discriminant analysis of calical measurements. Cross-tabulation and multiple comparisons tests show no significant morphological differences among geographic locations or water depths. Patterns of variation within and among fossil morphotypes are similar to modern morphotypes. DNA sequence data were collected for two polymorphic nuclear loci -tub1 and β-tub2) on all 94 modern colonies. Haplotype networks show that both genes consist of two clades, but morphotypes are not associated with genetic clades. Genotype frequencies and two-locus genotype assignments indicate genetic exchange across clades, and ϕst values show no genetic differentiation between morphotypes at different locations. Taken together, our morphological and genetic results do not provide evidence for cryptic species in M. cavernosa, but indicate instead that this species has an unusually high degree of polymorphism over a wide geographic area and persisting for >25 million years (myr).  相似文献

Summary Previous studies of the allodapine beeExoneura bicolor have utilised a predominantly social population from tall montane forests. In this report we examine aspects of the sociality and biology of a population from subcoastal heathland in western Victoria, Australia. Entire colonies, nesting inXanthorrhoea minor, were collected at monthly intervals over 12 months between February 1989 and January 1990. In addition, three collections fromMelaleuca squarrosa were made over three consecutive winter months. The heathland population differs from the montane population in several aspects associated with sociality: (i) it shows lower levels of co-occupancy in both newly founded and re-used nests; (ii) foundress dispersal occurs over a larger proportion of the year; and (iii) there may be a partical second brood produced in late summer, during and after adult eclosion of the first brood. The occurrence of a partial second brood gives rise to opportunities for sib-rearing and eusociality. Colony sizes tend to be larger inM. squarrosa thanX. minor, but still smaller than colonies from the montane population. Egg-laying commences several weeks earlier in multifemale colonies than in single female colonies, before spring dispersal begins. It appears that multifemale colonies are more successful at preventing brood loss than single females and that the mean number of brood per female is larger in multifemale colonies than in single female colonies. These two populations, which display differences in several life history traits, provide an ideal system for studying the mechanisms maintaining social behavior.  相似文献

Summary Protoplast fusion was carried out by using a routine technique with various auxotrophic strains of Saccharomyces diastaticus and Schizosaccharomyces pombe, and abortive fusion products were observed as small colonies which appeared more frequently than large prototrophic colonies. Sixty abortive fusion products retained one or more auxotrophic characters derived from S. diastaticus, one of the strains used in the protoplast fusion. Several hybrids were obtained between the abortive products and S. cerevisiae, and the segregants of these hybrids showed many aberrant tetrads with regard to some genetic markers. These segregation patterns would be likely to result if the segregating characters were in the trisomic condition +/+/-. The results indicate that (1) the abortive fusion products are an alien monosome additional (AMA) haploid containing the genome of S. diastaticus and only one chromosome of S. pombe. (2) The additional chromosome of S. pombe, which is integrated with the genome of Saccharomyces, can be stably transmitted to the progeny.  相似文献

The quantitative study of abdominal waggings in Polistes dominulus Christ, covering a total of 16,000 sequences of movements observed in 13 colonies (mono- and polygyne), showed or confirmed the following points. The same form of abdominal wagging, very frequent in this species, is carried out by foundresses in two contexts: when they are caring for their brood and during aggressive encounters with other adults. While the dominant female shows this behavior most often, it predominantly concerns aggressive waggings (0.51 sequence per social interaction for alpha females, 0.12 and 0.04 for beta and gamma); the movements related to feeding larvae are distributed much better among the foundresses of Polygyne nests (0.38 sequence per cell check for alpha, 0.24 and 0.21 for beta and gamma). The number of waggings carried out by the workers is negligible in normally constituted colonies (0.006 and 0.01, respectively, for the two contexts). The rate of occurrence of abdominal waggings changes with time. This change is opposite and symmetrical for the two types of waggings, although we were not able to establish any correlation between the number of the movements linked to feeding the larvae and the abundance or the composition of the brood. Abdominal wagging therefore appears as a means of communication between the different members in Polistes society, used in varying degrees by all foundresses; the change of its rate of occurrence over time suggests a possible influence on larvae, hence on the future status of newborn wasps (workers or future foundresses).  相似文献

Summary We tested matureAtta laevigata colonies in the field to see if the ants used queen substances, environmental odours (in this case odours produced by the nest's fungi), an odour produced by each individual, or a gestalt odour (resulting from odours distributed between nestmates) as a discrimination signal for nestmate recognition. We found that nestmate recognition inA. laevigata appears to be largely based on an odour produced by each nestmate which appears to be concentrated in the head, although other odours may also be used. We found no evidence of genetic relatedness influencing the discrimination ability, nor did ants respond differently to neighbors in comparison to non-neighbors.  相似文献

An experimental crossing program was carried out in order to test the hypothesis thatArmeria villosa subsp.carratracensis, a serpentine endemic from Southern Spain, is of hybrid origin. Fruit-set and mainly pollen stainability data in artificial hybrids demonstrate that internal interspecific barriers are weak. Two generations of backcrossing with the two putative parents —A. colorata andA. villosa subsp.longiaristata— can restore pollen stainability to an average of 83.2 and 68.7, respectively. A morphometric analysis of 148 specimens belonging to parental species, different artificial hybrid generations and wild putative hybrid race shows that (1) morphological characters have a strong genetic basis and thus are good markers in identifying hybrids and introgression inArmeria; (2) artificial backcrossing produces in morphometrical characters a variation which conforms in both trend and magnitude to what is commonly attributed in the wild to introgression; (3) the position of the putative hybrid race is intermediate between the two parental species used in the program. The moss Hennediella heimii constitutes a significant proportion of the terrestrial flora of East Antarctica, especially in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of southern Victoria Land. This is the first investigation of the extent of genetic variation within a population of H. heimii. Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA has been used to study both genetic diversity and dispersal of this moss in Miers Valley, southern Victoria Land. The results showed that genetic variation does occur in H. heimii (possibly due to increased exposure to UV-B irradiation), even between shoots within single colonies, and that colonies collected from three transects along meltstreams within the valley constitute a single large population. However, comparison with samples of the same species from nearby valleys and sites up to 500 km distant showed that the Miers Valley population is distinct from these other populations. The results also indicate that wind plays a major role in dispersal of H. heimii in this region of Antarctica. Accepted: 2 September 1998  相似文献
