Growth,yield, and yield components of ethephon-treated corn   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Field studies were conducted during 1985 and 1986 to study the effect of stage and rate of ethephon application on growth, combine-harvested yield, and yield components of three corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids at two densities. Ethephon was applied at four rates from 0 to 560g ha–1 at three growth stages: tassel elongation (TE 3mm), TE + 6d, and Ear elongation (EE 3mm). The greatest rate of ethephon decreased lodging by 85% in 1985 and 93% in 1986. Reduction in yield at the greatest rate of ethephon was 6% and 2% of the control in 1985 and 1986, respectively. Brace-root rating in 1986 was increased 20%, when comparing the greatest application rate with the control. In the same year, weight per seed was reduced 2%, which was equivalent to the percentage yield reduction. Plant and ear heights generally decreased in a linear fashion with increasing rate of ethephon. The growth stage at the time of ethephon application significantly altered all variables except grain moisture. Grain yield, seed weight, and lodging decreased as ethephon application was delayed. Decrease in seed weight probably caused the yield decrease with delayed application. Stages of application interacted with rate such that ear height was reduced less as ethephon application was delayed. The greatest rate of ethephon applied at the beginning of EE resulted in the best lodging control. However, reduction in lodging did not result in higher yield. Also, ethephon applied at the TE stage mainly affected elongation of internodes below the ear; at the EE stage, elongation of internodes above the ear was affected.  相似文献

Twenty-one field trials were conducted on commercial crops of winter wheat from 1976 through to 1978, with a mixture of 460 g chlormequat chloride and 320 g choline/litre at rates ranging from 0.67 kg to 2.07 kg of chlormequat chloride/hectare. The mean increase in grain yield in the absence of lodging following treatment with chlormequat chloride was 0.31 t/ha, with a greater yield increase where lodging occurred on untreated controls. Chlormequat chloride when applied in mixture with carbendazim fungicide usually resulted in yield increases which were less than the sum of the increases from the two products applied separately. Yield increases following the use of chlormequat chloride were usually greater when used in a traditional system of wheat growing than when used in the Laloux system. Effects of chlormequat chloride on crop height were poorly determined in the dry season of 1976 but there were consistent reductions up to 1.15 kg a.i./ha in 1977. Crop height was reduced by 1.61 kg of chlormequat chloride/ha in 1978.  相似文献

利用2013年8月1日河南省南阳地区夏玉米大风倒伏灾害的调查数据,分析抽雄期前后不同类型倒伏对夏玉米生长及产量形成的影响,研究不同品种的抗倒性差异和适播期.调查对象为5个播期的浚单20和3个播期的郑单958,倒伏类型划分为根斜、根倒、茎折和折断4种.研究表明: 各品种及播期均于抽雄前~抽雄后15 d倒伏率较高.浚单20各播期的总倒伏率为86.0%~98.5%,郑单958各播期的总倒伏率为60.0%~76.4%,且播种越早的播期总倒伏率越低.浚单20倒伏发生时,播期Ⅱ~Ⅴ的夏玉米生育时期接近抽雄,以根倒类型为主,倒伏率为53.0%~84.3%,已过抽雄期的播期Ⅰ夏玉米以茎折倒伏为主,倒伏率为37.5%.倒伏发生后干物质积累显著降低,各倒伏类型对干物质积累的影响总体表现为茎折>根倒>根斜,播种越晚的总干物质积累越少.倒伏对干物质分配比例影响表现为叶片和茎杆干物质比例增大,果穗干物质比例减少.根倒和茎折两种倒伏类型使穗长显著变短,穗粗显著变细,穗粒数显著减少,抽雄后发生倒伏也会使百粒重显著降低;而根斜倒伏类型对各性状的影响均不显著.倒伏后产量损失严重,不同倒伏类型中茎折类型减产最多,浚单20和郑单958平均减产率分别为74.2%和68.7%,尤其是茎折发生在抽雄之前难以形成产量;其次是根倒,平均减产率分别为46.3%和46.5%;根斜产量损失最小,平均分别为8.4%和13.2%.大风倒伏灾害后,浚单20产量平均为4959.9 kg·hm-2,产量随播期的推迟而减少;郑单958平均为6026.1 kg·hm-2,随播期变化不明显.总体上,郑单958品种抗倒性好于浚单20.  相似文献

A mixture of paclobutrazol and chlormequat chloride plant growth regulators (JF10405, Parlay C) was tested on field crops of two ‘double zero’ oilseed rape cultivars in two seasons. Application rate and timing of JF10405 were varied. Very large plots enabled the use of commercial farm equipment to treat and harvest the experiments. Untreated plots showed considerable lodging at harvest in all experiments. Treatment with JF10405 had only small effects on the height of mature plants but, generally, reduced lodging substantially even at the lowest rate tested. All JF10405 treatments increased seed yields, several significantly so, particularly a 2.50 litre/ha rate, although the optimum timing varied between experiments. Seed oil contents were little affected, but levels of glucosinolates were significantly decreased in some instances. Treatments giving good control of lodging also took less time to harvest, especially when cutting against the direction of the lodging. The results-are discussed in relation to the means by which these improvements in seed yield and quality were achieved, and crop management facilitated.  相似文献

Doses of the growth retardant, Terpal, were applied to seeds of spring barley. Germination was delayed as the concentration and duration of exposure to Terpal increased. Tiller bud outgrowth was promoted in treated seedlings and at maturity the total tiller production and number of ear-bearing tillers per plant was increased by the Terpal treatment. The yield of the main shoot was similar in both control and treated plants but the mean ear weight of the tillers was reduced in the latter, and thus there was no overall effect of the treatment on yield. Observations on vegetative plants showed that Terpal also reduced the growth of successive main shoot leaves and the elongation and dry weight of the seminal root system. The results are discussed in terms of an early modification in the distribution of resources during establishment that favour the outgrowth of tiller buds at the expense of the initial development of the main shoot and root system. It is proposed that seed treatment is a viable alternative to foliar spraying particularly in arid regions.  相似文献

A substantial increase in grain yield potential is required, along with better use of water and fertilizer, to ensure food security and environmental protection in future decades. For improvements in photosynthetic capacity to result in additional wheat yield, extra assimilates must be partitioned to developing spikes and grains and/or potential grain weight increased to accommodate the extra assimilates. At the same time, improvement in dry matter partitioning to spikes should ensure that it does not increase stem or root lodging. It is therefore crucial that improvements in structural and reproductive aspects of growth accompany increases in photosynthesis to enhance the net agronomic benefits of genetic modifications. In this article, six complementary approaches are proposed, namely: (i) optimizing developmental pattern to maximize spike fertility and grain number, (ii) optimizing spike growth to maximize grain number and dry matter harvest index, (iii) improving spike fertility through desensitizing floret abortion to environmental cues, (iv) improving potential grain size and grain filling, and (v) improving lodging resistance. Since many of the traits tackled in these approaches interact strongly, an integrative modelling approach is also proposed, to (vi) identify any trade-offs between key traits, hence to define target ideotypes in quantitative terms. The potential for genetic dissection of key traits via quantitative trait loci analysis is discussed for the efficient deployment of existing variation in breeding programmes. These proposals should maximize returns in food production from investments in increased crop biomass by increasing spike fertility, grain number per unit area and harvest index whilst optimizing the trade-offs with potential grain weight and lodging resistance.  相似文献

In order to obtain high productivity for a cotton crop, one of the major requirements is to establish an adequate plant population. The use of good-quality seed may ultimately be the best approach to attain this goal problem. The objective of this research was to study the effect of N-fertilization (at rates of 95.2 and 142.8 kg of N ha−1), foliar application of K (at rates of 0, 0.38, 0.77, 1.15 kg of K2O ha−1, applied twice during square initiation and boll development stages) and the plant growth retardant (PGR), mepiquat chloride (applied twice, 75 days after planting at 0.0 [control] and 0.048 kg a.i. ha−1, and 90 days after planting at 0.0 [control] and 0.024 kg a.i. ha−1), on seed yield, viability, and seedling vigor of Egyptian cotton (Gossypium barbadense cv. Giza 86). A field experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Center, Giza, Egypt in two growing seasons. Growth, mineral uptake, seed yield per plant and per ha, seed weight, seed viability, seedling vigor and cool germination test performance were all found to increase significantly due to the addition of the high N-rate, the foliar application of three potassium concentrations, and the PGR mepiquat chloride. The N and K rates as well as application of mepiquat chloride had no significant effect on the germination rate index in both seasons. Under the conditions of this study, applying N at a rate of 142.8 kg ha−1 combined with spraying cotton plants with K2O at 1.15 kg ha−1 and with mepiquat chloride at 0.048 + 0.024 kg ha−1 were found to improve seed yield as well as seed viability and seedling vigor in the next season.  相似文献

Three field experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the effect of application of the plant growth regulator chlormequat on growth and yield of the cereal triticale. Application of chlormequat resulted in shorter triticale plants as a result of restricted elongation of the upper internodes of the stem. These shorter plants produced a lower weight of straw and were more resistant to lodging. In two experiments chlormequat application led to no statistically significant increase in triticale grain yield; in a third yield was increased. Chlormequat consistently increased the number of grains per ear but this was offset to some extent by a lower mean grain weight. Yield was closely correlated with the number of grains per m2. Leaf senescence was delayed by chlormequat. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that chlormequat can increase yield potential.  相似文献

Seedlings of Petunia x hybrida ‘Orchid’ treated with the ethylene-releasing compound ethephon at 0.9, 1.7, and 3.5 mM evolved ethylene at a higher rate as the concentration of ethephon increased. Regardless of the concentration of ethephon applied, ethylene evolution peaked 6 to 8 h following application. Evidence that ethephon application decreased apical dominance included an increase in the number of new nodes on the main stem and a sustained increase in the length of new and existing lateral shoots compared to the control (no ethephon). Plants treated with 3.5 mM ethephon developed mild chlorosis, whereas a concentration of 1.7 mM ethephon decreased apical dominance without phytotoxic effects. The auxin/cytokinin ratio decreased in the apical shoot section as early as 1 h after ethephon treatment. In contrast, a decrease in the ratio in the subapical shoot section was not detected until 24 h after ethephon application. Reduction in auxin/cytokinin ratio was a result of a decrease in indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and an increase of zeatin riboside (ZR), but not isopentenyladenosine (iPA). These results suggest that exposing ‘Orchid’ petunia seedlings to ethylene via ethephon lowers the auxin/cytokinin ratio, thereby promoting the outgrowth of lateral shoots.  相似文献

Winter wheat, (cv. Consort) was inoculated with three isolates of either Oculimacula yallundae or O. acuformis to determine the effect of eyespot caused by each species on yield and lodging resistance of winter wheat. Plants were visually assessed for disease incidence and severity, and pathogen DNA was quantified at GS 33 and GS 60. At early milk development of the crop (GS 72), 900 main shoots were also visually assessed for the disease and subjected to mechanical tests for stem strength. Pathogen DNA was extracted from each shoot and quantified using competitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Although slight and moderate eyespot lesions caused by either species had no effect on ear weight, severe lesions caused by O. acuformis and O. yallundae reduced ear weight by 3% and 7%, respectively. Stem lodging failed to occur at the site; however, yield losses of 11% for O. acuformis and 6% for O. yallundae were observed. Visual assessment failed to reveal differences between species in their effect on plant characteristics, stem bending strength, or stem safety factor. PCR data, however, showed that the two species had similar effects determined by different DNA concentrations. Both species reduced lodging resistance (stem safety factor) compared with the control. In contrast to healthy plants, where reductions were related predominantly to the height and weight distribution of the plants, the observed reductions of stem lodging resistance in infected plants with Oculimacula spp. were associated primarily with reductions in stem bending strength.  相似文献

Radiation interception, dry matter accumulation, flower and pod production and yield were measured for a semi-leafless pea (Pisum sativum) breeding selection (BS3) on three contrasting sites. Differences in soil moisture availability were largely responsible for a three-fold difference in yield between sites. Radiation interception was related to dry matter production by calculating photosynthetic efficiencies. In the absence of lodging, crop canopies converted intercepted radiation into dry matter with constant efficiency (?) throughout the season; under conditions of moisture stress ? was reduced. Serious lodging during the post-flowering period on one site resulted in a mean seasonal photosynthetic efficiency (?) 17% lower than ?. Tef is a cereal crop of cultural and economic importance in Ethiopia. It is grown primarily for its grain though it is also an important source of fodder. Tef suffers from lodging that reduces both grain yield and quality. As a first step toward executing a marker-assisted breeding program for lodging resistance and grain yield improvement, a linkage map was constructed using 151 F9 recombinant inbred lines obtained by single-seed-descent from a cross between Eragrostis tef and its wild relative Eragrostis pilosa. The map was primarily based on microsatellite (SSR) markers that were developed from SSR-enriched genomic libraries. The map consisted of 30 linkage groups and spanned a total length of 1,277.4 cM (78.7% of the genome) with an average distance of 5.7 cM between markers. This is the most saturated map for tef to date, and for the first time, all of the markers are PCR-based. Using agronomic data from 11 environments and marker data, it was possible to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling lodging, grain yield and 15 other related traits. The positive effects of the QTL identified from the wild parent were mainly for earliness, reduced culm length and lodging resistance. In this population, it is now possible to combine lodging resistance and grain yield using a marker-assisted selection program targeting the QTL identified for both traits. The newly developed SSR markers will play a key role in germplasm organization, fingerprinting and monitoring the success of the hybridization process in intra-specific crosses lacking distinctive morphological markers.  相似文献

False smut is a disease of rice inflorescence. The existing systems of disease severity assessment for rice false smut disease are not very sensitive as the ball quality and also the impact of false smut on filled grain number and grain‐filling were not under consideration. Here, a precise assessment method to evaluate the severity of the disease was developed. The ‘yield representative’ (YR) based on ‘mean floret wt.’ and ‘filled grain %’ was simulated for the precise disease severity assessment of rice false smut disease. The single floret weight envisages major yield components irrespective of the type of panicle. Correlation between YR and major yield attributes was studied, and it was observed that YR had significant correlation with ‘filled grain %’ (0.77–0.95) and ‘single spikelet weight’ (0.88–0.98). Significant negative correlation of YR was observed with the chaff percentage, false smut ball number and ball weight. This YR‐based methodology was utilized to assess the disease severity in nine rice cultivars. The disease severity in those nine cultivars was evaluated by the already existing methodologies also. The disease severity measured by the present technique was compared with the disease severity assessed by the old methodologies. The procedure adapted here for disease severity measurement was found to be more informative and useful. It was observed that in case of mild infection, the false smut was enhancing yield attributes. The high‐yielding rice varieties Savitri and Gayatri were found to be tolerant to false smut and may be used as resistant donors.  相似文献

In a field experiment, all components of winter wheat grain yield, except grain number per ear, were reduced by wild-oat competition, and more so by a prostrate form of wild-oat than by an upright form. The prostrate form, ‘Churston’, shaded the crop at anthesis. Although there were no significant differences in photosynthetic activity in the flag leaves of wheat at saturating light intensities during the later stages of grain filling, it is likely that differences in growth form, height, weight and area of these two forms of wild-oat, competing principally for light, accounted for their different effects on wheat grain yield.  相似文献

The effectiveness of selected cultural practices in managing the Columbia lance nematode, Hoplolaimus columbus, on cotton was evaluated in experiments in growers'' infested fields. The effects of planting date, cotton cultivar, treatment with the growth regulator mepiquat chloride, and destruction of cotton-root systems after harvest on cotton-lint yield and population densities of H. columbus were studied. The yield of cotton cultivar Deltapine 50 was negatively related (P = 0.054) to initial population density of H. columbus whereas the yield of Deltapine 90 was not affected by preplant density of this nematode, indicating tolerance in Deltapine 90. Reproduction of this nematode did not differ on the two cultivars. Planting date and treatment with the growth regulator mepiquat chloride did not influence cotton yield in a consistent manner. Application of mepiquat chloride suppressed (P ≤ 0.05) numbers of Columbia lance nematode, although there was an interaction (P ≤ 0.05) with cultivar and year. Early vs. late destruction of cotton-root systems did not impact population densities of this nematode either year, and had no impact on the subsequent cotton crop. The nematicide fenamiphos increased (P ≤ 0.03) cotton yield when H. columbus numbers exceeded the damage threshold.  相似文献

The effects of lodging and nitrogen rate were studied in a field trial of oilseed rapeBrassica napus L. Lodging decreased seed yield (16%) compared with a frame-raised crop. Yield decreased because of a significant reduction in each of the yield components coupled with a reduced plant population caused by stem breakage at the ground level. Lodging also reduced the final crop dry weight and harvest index. Seed yield was also lower when 200 kg ha–1 nitrogen was applied than with 400 kg ha–1. A general decrease in pod number m–2, seed nuber pod–1 and seed weight caused the lower yields. The use of 400 kg ha–1 of nitrogen changed the contribution of the terminal raceme and individual branches with respect to seed yield. Seed nitrogn content and nitrogen yield increased at the 400 kg ha–1, lowering both seed oil content and oil yield.  相似文献

In field experiments with Japanese mint using different growth retardants, chlormequat chloride (2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride) increased the oil content significantly and inhibited growth to some extent only, whilst ethephon (2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid) at 0.06% concentration significantly decreased growth but had no significant effect on oil content. Among the two oil components studied, menthone content only was significantly increased by 0.06% ethephon whereas the other growth retardants were ineffective. Correlation studies indicated a strong negative relationship of leaf/stem ratio with plant height and herb yield while a strong positive relationship was obtained between the latter two characters. Within the bioenergy debate, the ‘food vs. fuel’ controversy quickly replaced enthusiasm for biofuels derived from first‐generation feedstocks. Second‐generation biofuels offer an opportunity to produce fuels from dedicated energy crops, waste materials or coproducts such as cereal straw. Wheat represents one of the most widely grown arable crops around the world, with wheat straw, a potential source of biofuel feedstock. Wheat straw currently has limited economic value; hence, wheat cultivars have been bred for increased grain yield; however, with the development of second‐generation biofuel production, utilization of straw biomass provides the potential for ‘food and fuel’. Reviewing the evidence for the development of dual‐purpose wheat cultivars optimized for food grain and straw biomass production, we present a holistic assessment of a potential ideotype for a dual‐purpose cultivar (DPC). An ideal DPC would be characterized by high grain and straw yields, high straw digestibility (i.e. biofuel yield potential) and good lodging resistance. Considerable variation in these traits exists among current wheat cultivars, facilitating the selection of improved individual traits; however, increasing straw yield and digestibility could potentially have negative trade‐off impacts on grain yield and lodging resistance, reducing the feasibility of a single ideotype. Adoption of alternative management practices could potentially increase straw yield and digestibility, albeit these practices are also associated with potential trade‐offs among cultivar traits. Benefits from using DPCs include reduced logistics costs along the biofuel feedstock supply chain, but practical barriers to differential pricing for straw digestibility traits are likely to reduce the financial incentive to farmers for growing higher ‘biofuel‐quality’ straw cultivars. Further research is required to explore the relationships among the ideotype traits to quantify potential DPC benefits; this will help to determine whether stakeholders along the bioenergy feedstock supply chain will invest in the development of DPCs that provide food and fuel potential.  相似文献
