Invasive plants are often associated with greater productivity and soil nutrient availabilities, but whether invasive plants with dissimilar traits change decomposer communities and decomposition rates in consistent ways is little known. We compared decomposition rates and the fungal and bacterial communities associated with the litter of three problematic invaders in intermountain grasslands; cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) and leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula), as well as the native bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata). Shoot and root litter from each plant was placed in cheatgrass, spotted knapweed, and leafy spurge invasions as well as remnant native communities in a fully reciprocal design for 6 months to see whether decomposer communities were species‐specific, and whether litter decomposed fastest when placed in a community composed of its own species (referred to hereafter as home‐field advantage–HFA). Overall, litter from the two invasive forbs, spotted knapweed and leafy spurge, decomposed faster than the native and invasive grasses, regardless of the plant community of incubation. Thus, we found no evidence of HFA. T‐RFLP profiles indicated that both fungal and bacterial communities differed between roots and shoots and among plant species, and that fungal communities also differed among plant community types. Synthesis. These results show that litter from three common invaders to intermountain grasslands decomposes at different rates and cultures microbial communities that are species‐specific, widespread, and persistent through the dramatic shifts in plant communities associated with invasions.  相似文献

Many experiments report that animals will work (lever press) for food in the presence of freely available identical food. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of applied ethologists because it seems to prove that animals have a need to express appetitive behavior. If this is the case, then it has implications for the provision of environmental enrichment for animals in captivity. In this experiment, we maintained 6 pigs in closed economy environments for three 120-hr choice periods in which they had continuous free access to operant and identical free food. In the experiment, we tested pigs using 2 different operant schedules, fixed ratio (FR) 5 and variable ratio (VR) 5. We used a VR schedule because many enrichment studies claim that unpredictability is an important characteristic that makes an enrichment device attractive. The results show that pigs exhibited a negligible level of contrafreeloading (M ± standard error of the mean proportion = 0.05 × 0.01). Furthermore, there were no significant differences between FRs and VRs of reinforcement.  相似文献

In contrast to earlier reports (J. L. Maller and E. G. Krebs, 1980, Curr. Top. Cell. Regul. 16, 271-311; M. Moreau, J. P. Vilian, and P. Guerrier, 1980, Dev. Biol. 78, 201-214; W. J. Wasserman and L. D. Smith, 1981, J. Cell Biol. 89, 389-394; D. Huchon, R. Ozon, E. H. Fischer, and J. G. Demaille, 1981, Mol. Cell. Endocrinol. 22, 211-222) calmodulin preparations isolated from Xenopus laevis ovaries or obtained commercially rarely induced maturation upon microinjection into individual oocytes. Calmodulin injections did result in significant cases of maturation when oocytes were first pretreated (primed) with calcium-free (EGTA) OR-2 and then injected in regular OR-2 medium. However, under these conditions the injected buffer solution alone was sometimes found to induce maturation. Under more optimal priming conditions, cases were found where as high as 100% of the oocytes matured simply by returning them to regular OR-2 medium. To determine which divalent cations could be involved in the priming effects of EGTA pretreatment we repeated the earlier ionophore work of W. J. Wasserman and Y. Masui (1975, J. Exp. Zool. 193, 369-375), looking not just at calcium and magnesium but other divalent cations as well. Several divalent cations (10 mM) were found to induce germinal vesicle breakdown with the following tentative order of efficacy, Co2+ greater than or equal to Zn2+ greater than or equal to Mn2+ greater than Ca2+ greater than Mg2+ greater than Ba2+, regardless of whether or not ionophore A23187 was present. These results, along with other reports in the literature, are discussed with respect to the theory that a rise in free calcium and calmodulin is involved in triggering oocyte maturation; we conclude that neither is involved.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to evaluate whether alterations in flood pulses differentially affect diet composition, feeding niche breadth, and diet overlap of piscivorous fish. Species examined were Acestrorhynchus lacustris, Hoplias aff malabaricus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, Rhaphiodon vulpinus, and Salminus brasiliensis. These species were collected with gillnets (different mesh sizes) in the upper Paraná River floodplain, during four distinct flood events (four periods; A = 1992/1993; B = 2000; C = 2001; and D = 2002). The volumetric method was chosen to express diet results. Feeding niche breadth was calculated using Levins measure, and diet overlap was evaluated by the Pianka’s Index. Flooding was more intense and lasted longer in the first period (1992/1993—A). Diet composition of the studied species was broad (47 total items consumed). For period A, Prochilodus lineatus was the main item taken by four out of five species. In the other periods, there were relevant alterations in diet, since P. lineatus was not recorded in any stomach of the five species; rather, it was replaced by the shrimp, Macrobrachium amazonicum. Diet overlap was low in all periods. The greatest overlap was obtained in period C for P. squamosissimus and R. vulpinus, due to high consumption of shrimps. There were no significant differences in niche breadth among species. However, the species presented distinct variation patterns in niche breadth. For example, H. aff. malabaricus showed a tendency toward increasing niche over the period, but the other species presented larger niches only during period A. Therefore, it can be concluded that the intensity and duration of the flood pulse influences: (i) the diet composition of piscivores; (ii) the breadth of their niches; and (iii) feeding overlap among species. A fundamental challenge in understanding the global nitrogen cycle is the quantification of denitrification on large heterogeneous landscapes. Because floodplains are important sites for denitrification and nitrogen retention, we developed a generalized floodplain biogeochemical model to determine whether dams and flood‐control levees affect floodplain denitrification by altering floodplain inundation. We combined a statistical model of floodplain topography with a model of hydrology and nitrogen biogeochemistry to simulate floods of different magnitude. The model predicted substantial decreases in NO3‐N processing on floodplains whose overbank floods have been altered by levees and upstream dams. Our simulations suggest that dams may reduce nitrate processing more than setback levees. Levees increased areal floodplain denitrification rates, but this effect was offset by a reduction in the area inundated. Scenarios that involved a levee also resulted in more variability in N processing among replicate floodplains. Nitrate loss occurred rapidly and completely in our model floodplains. As a consequence, total flood volume and the initial mass of nitrate reaching a floodplain may provide reasonable estimates of total N processing on floodplains during floods. This finding suggests that quantifying the impact of dams and levees on floodplain denitrification may be possible using recent advances in remote sensing of floodplain topography and flood stage. Furthermore, when considering flooding over the long‐term, the cumulative N processed by frequent smaller floods was estimated to be quite large relative to that processed by larger, less frequent floods. Our results suggest that floodplain denitrification may be greatly influenced by the pervasive anthropogenic flood‐control measures that currently exist on most majors river floodplains throughout the world, and may have the potential to be impacted by future changes in flood probabilities that will likely occur as a result of climate shifts.  相似文献

Do changes in rainfall patterns affect semiarid annual plant communities?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Question: Climate change models forecast a reduction in annual precipitation and more extreme events (less rainy days and longer drought periods between rainfall events), which may have profound effects on terrestrial ecosystems. Plant growth, population and community dynamics in dry environments are likely to be affected by these changes since productivity is already limited by water availability. We tested the effects of reduced precipitation and fewer rain events on three semiarid plant communities dominated by annual species. Location: Three semiarid plant communities from Almería province (SE Spain). Methods: Rain‐out shelters were set up in each community and watering quantity and frequency were manipulated from autumn to early summer. Plant productivity, cover and diversity were measured at the end of the experimental period. Results: We found that a 50% reduction in watering reduced productivity, plant cover and diversity in all three communities. However, neither the 25% reduction in watering nor changes in the frequency of watering events affected these parameters. Conclusions: The lack of response to small reductions in water could be due to the identity and resistance of the plant communities involved, which are adapted to rainfall variability characteristic of arid environments. Therefore, a rainfall reduction of 25% or less may not affect these plant communities in the short term, although higher reductions or long‐term changes in water availability would probably reduce productivity and diversity in these communities.  相似文献

The Okavango Delta has an annual flood cycle that spreads slowly from the northwestern`panhandle' into a widening delta to the southeast. Rotifers were sampled from areas where the flood was active, and from other areas not yet reached by the flood. In still waters, the samples were dominated by euplanktonic rotifers, particularly of the genera Brachionus, Keratella and Hexarthra, with about 20 species per 1000 individuals at a station. Where the water was moving the samples were dominated by periphytic rotifers, with over 100 species per 1000 individuals at a single station. The periphytic species were dominated by the genus Lecane,with over 45 species, followed by Lepadellawith 24 species, and Trichocercawith 23 species. Comparison of the Okavango with six other tropical localities reveals fairly consistent ratios of the numbers of species in the periphytic genera Lecane, Lepadellaand Trichocerca,indicating that there may be assembly rules for communities of tropical periphytic rotifers.  相似文献

In semi-arid floodplains the average times between floods have been cited to drive metabolic and biogeochemical responses during the subsequent flooding pulse. However, the interaction effects of flood pulse duration and the length of time between floods on the carbon budget are not well understood. Using field experiments, flood pulses—dry cycles were simulated (SF plots—short flood/dry cycles: 15 flood days + 7 dry + 15 flood and LF plots—long flood/dry cycles: 21 flood + 14 dry + 21 flood) in a semi-arid floodplain in Central Spain, in order to study the effects on soil CO2 emissions. Differences on soil water content among SF, LF and control plots were statistically significant throughout the experiment (p < 0.01). Soil CO2 emission rates during drying time were significantly related with the duration of previous flooding and inter-flooding intervals (R 2 = 0.52–0.64, p = 0.03). During the first stage of desiccation, the high soil water content appears to limit aerobic metabolism. Soil respiration rates similar to those of control plots measurements occurred 1–2 weeks later. Then, soil respiration increased to a maximum rate which was delayed 5–8 weeks, as high soil water content limited microbial activity. While more than 7 days of inundation promoted denitrification, organic nutrients supplied by flood water increased 1% soil respiration during drying. Differences between SF and LF plots in soil CO2 emissions only appeared after floodplain soil had been subjected to two consecutive flood-dry cycles; 70 days after the second inundation ended, CO2 fluxes achieved similar values in all treatments. Daily soil CO2 emission rates during the entire study period (117 days) were comparable, independently of the flood duration and the time between floods (75.76 ± 1.59 and 77.94 ± 0.45 mmol CO2 m?2 day?1, in SF and LF, respectively). Flood disturbance affects site-specific microbial processes, but only during very short time periods. The mechanism by which soil microbial communities cope or adapt to new conditions needs to be reassessed in future research in order to determine the long-term effects of hydrological changes in the soil carbon balance of semi-arid floodplains.  相似文献

Almost half of lowland tropical forests are at various stages of regeneration following deforestation or fragmentation. Changes in tree communities along successional gradients have predictable bottom‐up effects on consumers. Liana (woody vine) assemblages also change with succession, but their effects on animal succession remain unexplored. Here we used a large‐scale liana removal experiment across a forest successional chronosequence (7–31 years) to determine the importance of lianas to ant community structure. We conducted 1,088 surveys of ants foraging on and living in trees using tree trunk baiting and hand‐collecting techniques at 34 paired forest plots, half of which had all lianas removed. Ant species composition, β‐diversity, and species richness were not affected by liana removal; however, ant species co‐occurrence (the coexistence of two or more species in a single tree) was more frequent in control plots, where lianas were present, versus removal plots. Forest stand age had a larger effect on ant community structure than the presence of lianas. Mean ant species richness in a forest plot increased by ca. 10% with increasing forest age across the 31‐year chronosequence. Ant surveys from forest >20 years old included more canopy specialists and fewer ground‐nesting ant species versus those from forests <20 years old. Consequently, lianas had a minimal effect on arboreal ant communities in this early successional forest, where rapidly changing tree community structure was more important to ant species richness and composition.  相似文献

Neutral theory in ecology is aimed at describing communities where species coexist due to similarities rather than the classically posited niche differences. It assumes that all individuals, regardless of species identity, are demographically equivalent. However, Hubbell suggested that neutral theory may describe even niche communities because tradeoffs equalize fitness across species which differ in their traits. In fact, tradeoffs can involve stabilization as well as fitness equalization, and stabilization involves different dynamics and can lead to different community patterns than neutral theory. Yet the important question remains if neutral theory provides a robust picture of all fitness-equalized communities, of which communities with demographic equivalence are one special case. Here, I examine Hubbell’s suggestion for a purely fitness-equalizing interspecific birth–death tradeoff, expanding neutral theory to a theory describing this broader class of fitness-equalized communities. In particular, I use a flexible framework allowing examination of the influence of speciation dynamics. I find that the scaling of speciation rates with birth and death rates, which is poorly known, has large impacts on community structure. In most cases, the departure from the predictions of current neutral models is substantial. This work suggests that demographic and speciation complexities present a challenge to the future development and use of neutral theory in ecology as null model. The framework presented here will provide a starting point for meeting that challenge, and may also be useful in the development of stochastic niche models with speciation dynamics.  相似文献

Predicting the biodiversity impacts of global warming implies that we know where and with what magnitude these impacts will be encountered. Amphibians are currently the most threatened vertebrates, mainly due to habitat loss and to emerging infectious diseases. Global warming may further exacerbate their decline in the near future, although the impact might vary geographically. We predicted that subtropical amphibians should be relatively susceptible to warming‐induced extinctions because their upper critical thermal limits (CTmax) might be only slightly higher than maximum pond temperatures (Tmax). We tested this prediction by measuring CTmax and Tmax for 47 larval amphibian species from two thermally distinct subtropical communities (the warm community of the Gran Chaco and the cool community of Atlantic Forest, northern Argentina), as well as from one European temperate community. Upper thermal tolerances of tadpoles were positively correlated (controlling for phylogeny) with maximum pond temperatures, although the slope was steeper in subtropical than in temperate species. CTmax values were lowest in temperate species and highest in the subtropical warm community, which paradoxically, had very low warming tolerance (CTmaxTmax) and therefore may be prone to future local extinction from acute thermal stress if rising pond Tmax soon exceeds their CTmax. Canopy‐protected subtropical cool species have larger warming tolerance and thus should be less impacted by peak temperatures. Temperate species are relatively secure to warming impacts, except for late breeders with low thermal tolerance, which may be exposed to physiological thermal stress in the coming years.  相似文献

One of the main issues in community ecology is the detection of structure and the identification of its related causes. In this study, co-occurrence null models were used to identify possible spatio-temporal patterns in the assemblage of aquatic macrophytes in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. The samples were obtained through the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program at two different grains: (1) a coarser spatial grain in January and August 2001 (entire floodplain lagoons); (2) and a finer spatial grain in November 2006 (1 m2 quadrats). The study was conducted in 36 lagoons, both connected and disconnected to the main river channel, located in the sub-basins of the Baía, Ivinheima and Paraná rivers. Two null models of species co-occurrence, the C-Score and Checkerboard indices, were used to test the null hypothesis of random structure of the aquatic macrophyte assemblages. The null models showed that the aquatic macrophyte assemblages were spatially structured in the distinct spatial grains. However, despite this general pattern, macrophyte assemblages are organized differently depending on the degree of connectivity, seasonal period and, at a finer grain, depth. Species co-occurrences were random in the disconnected lagoons during flood periods, in deep zones of the lagoons of the Baía River and in the shallow littoral zone in the lagoons of the Paraná River. Analysis of the patterns of co-occurrence indicated that competition and/or habitat preferences are probably important influences on the nonrandom structure of assemblages. However, we suppose that at least three important factors (disturbances by water level fluctuation, dispersion and facilitation) counteract potential effects of competition in specific situations, leading macrophyte assemblages to assume random structure.  相似文献

Following analysis of the song of two Drosophila species, Kyriacou and Hall in 1980 described a rhythmic variation in the intervals between sound pulses. This rhythmicity was species specific and various mutants also showed characteristic song-period rhythmicity. Recent attempts by Ewing and by Crossley to confirm the existence of the rhythms, using essentially similar methods, have failed; Kyriacou and Hall have since ascribed these failures to differences in technique and methods of measurement between them and their critics, and re-affirm that the rhythmicity they described exists. In view of the controversy surrounding the existence of song-period rhythmicity, a body of work on the genetics of this behaviour must be viewed with caution.  相似文献

In reef corals, much research has focused on the capacity of corals to acclimatize and/or adapt to different thermal environments, but the majority of work has focused on distinctions in mean temperature. Across small spatial scales, distinctions in daily temperature variation are common, but the role of such environmental variation in setting coral thermal tolerances has received little attention. Here, we take advantage of back-reef pools in American Samoa that differ in thermal variation to investigate the effects of thermally fluctuating environments on coral thermal tolerance. We experimentally heat-stressed Acropora hyacinthus from a thermally moderate lagoon pool (temp range 26.5–33.3°C) and from a more thermally variable pool that naturally experiences 2–3 h high temperature events during summer low tides (temp range 25.0–35°C). We compared mortality and photosystem II photochemical efficiency of colony fragments exposed to ambient temperatures (median: 28.0°C) or elevated temperatures (median: 31.5°C). In the heated treatment, moderate pool corals showed nearly 50% mortality whether they hosted heat-sensitive (49.2 ± 6.5% SE; C2) or heat-resistant (47.0 ± 11.2% SE; D) symbionts. However, variable pool corals, all of which hosted heat-resistant symbionts, survived well, showing low mortalities (16.6 ± 8.8% SE) statistically indistinguishable from controls held at ambient temperatures (5.1–8.3 ± 3.3–8.3% SE). Similarly, moderate pool corals hosting heat-sensitive algae showed rapid rates of decline in algal photosystem II photochemical efficiency in the elevated temperature treatment (slope = −0.04 day−1 ± 0.007 SE); moderate pool corals hosting heat-resistant algae showed intermediate levels of decline (slope = −0.039 day−1 ± 0.007 SE); and variable pool corals hosting heat-resistant algae showed the least decline (slope = −0.028 day−1 ± 0.004 SE). High gene flow among pools suggests that these differences probably reflect coral acclimatization not local genetic adaptation. Our results suggest that previous exposure to an environmentally variable microhabitat adds substantially to coral–algal thermal tolerance, beyond that provided by heat-resistant symbionts alone.  相似文献

Following the demonstration that the rate of evolutionary change in the amino acid sequences of cytochromes c of eukaryotic species was not constant either for a single line of phylogenetic descent during different evolutionary intervals or for separate lines of descent, the concept that neutral mutations account for the vast majority of the evolutionary variations could no longer be accepted. Previous studies had shown that all eukaryotic cytochromes c tested appeared to be functionally indistinguishable in their reaction with mitochondrial respiratory chain components. However, an examination of the kinetics at low ionic strength led to the discovery of a high affinity reaction of cytochrome c with cytochrome c oxidase that revealed large differences in activity between the cytochromes of the horse, baker's yeast and the protist Euglena. Observed Km values for this reaction of 10(-7) to 10(-8) M appear to represent actual dissociation constants, as demonstrated by direct binding studies of cytochrome c with purified cytochrome c oxidase. The high affinity reaction is sensitive to ionic strength and inhibited by ADP and ATP in the range of physiological concentrations, ATP being three times as effective as ADP. The possibility is discussed that this effect of ATP on cytochrome c binding to its oxidase could provide the basis of a mechanism for mitochondrial respiratory control. The demonstration of differences between cytochrome c of various species in this kinetic system opens the way to a systematic study of the possible evolutionary adaptations of cytochromes c to their oxidases.  相似文献

Many captive birds are kept in artificial lighting that is typically deficient in ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. Most birds can perceive the range of light that humans see but also have an additional retinal cone type that is tuned to UV wavelengths. Consequently, artificial lighting may be detrimental as it might limit the functionality of their vision. We examined the preferences of European starlings, Sturnus vulgaris, for various artificial light environments. In our first experiment, groups of starlings showed a preference for environments that contained UV (UV+) over those where UV wavelengths had been removed (UV−). This preference was not affected by the sex of the individuals within the group or, as shown in a later experiment, by whether the birds had been previously housed in UV+ or UV− conditions. In contrast, individual starlings showed no preference for UV+ over UV− environments, although the power of our test was low. In a subsequent experiment, starling groups preferred the higher of two light intensities that were presented; however, equalizing the overall quantal flux between UV+ and UV− extinguished any preference for UV+ over UV−. The group preference for UV+ conditions in the first experiment may therefore have resulted from a preference for brighter conditions rather than a specific preference for UV. However, equalizing the quantal flux may not equalize perceived brightness, because it is not known how birds' visual systems weight input from each cone type. We conclude that, for nonbreeding, group-housed captive starlings, there is no positive evidence of a preference for the presence of UV as a specific wavelength. Host bark traits are known to affect the characteristics of epiphyte communities in forests worldwide; however, few investigations of such relationships have been undertaken in New Zealand forests. By examining the trunk epiphyte communities on four co-occurring forest tree species (Agathis australis, Dacrydium cupressinum, Knightia excelsa and Vitex lucens) representing a range of bark characteristics, we sought evidence that bark traits may shape these communities. Sampling was conducted on tree trunks in the Waitakere and Hunua ranges in the Auckland Region. As expected, the rough but lightly shedding bark of Vitex lucens was found to support many epiphytes, whereas the coarsely flaking bark surface of Dacrydium cupressinum supported few epiphytes. Conversely, despite bark with a smooth texture that sheds in large flakes, and contrary to the suggestions of previous authors, Agathis australis trunks were found to support the greatest numbers of epiphytes and this species was one of the most frequent epiphyte hosts. The individual epiphytes found on Agathis australis, however, were significantly smaller and more appressed to the trunk than those on the other trees, and species composition differed from the other host species.  相似文献

Unpaved, low traffic roads are often assumed to have minimal effects on biodiversity. To explore this assertion, we sampled the bird communities in fifteen randomly selected sites in Pafos Forest, Cyprus and used multiple regression to quantify the effects of such roads on the total species richness. Moreover, we classified birds according to their migratory status and their global population trends, and tested each category separately. Besides the total length of unpaved roads, we also tested: a. the site's habitat diversity, b. the coefficient of variation in habitat (patch) size, c. the distance to the nearest agricultural field, and d. the human population size of the nearest village. We measured our variables at six different distances from the bird point-count locations. We found a strong negative relationship between the total bird richness and the total length of unpaved roads. The human population size of the nearest village also had a negative effect. Habitat diversity was positively related to species richness. When the categories were tested, we found that the passage migrants were influenced more by the road network while resident breeders were influenced by habitat diversity. Species with increasing and stable populations were only marginally affected by the variables tested, but the effect of road networks on species with decreasing populations was large. We conclude that unpaved and sporadically used roads can have detrimental effects on the bird communities, especially on vulnerable species. We propose that actions are taken to limit the extent of road networks within protected areas, especially in sites designated for their rich avifauna, such as Pafos Forest, where several of the affected species are species of European and global importance.  相似文献
