The economic value of breastfeeding to the society at large is under researched and its importance as a preventive public health strategy is underestimated. What little research there is indicates that considerable savings would accrue from following the WHO/UNICEF advice to breastfeed exclusively for six months and continue breastfeeding along with complementary foods for two years or more. Despite relatively high breastfeeding initiation in Germany, neither exclusive breastfeeding nor breastfeeding duration come close to international recommendations. Breastfeeding is mostly regarded as a woman’s personal choice and the government has been slow to engage in breastfeeding promotion, support and research. Some structures in Germany do offer support for breastfeeding women – including the growing number of Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) certified hospitals and a comprehensive maternity leave policy. However, the costs of breastfeeding are mostly borne by the mothers and those for breastfeeding training mostly by the individual health care workers or hospital, while the health insurance companies and society-at-large are profiting from the financial savings from exclusive and long-term breastfeeding. Factors which might improve breastfeeding rates and duration in this country include broad expansion of and financial support for both BFHI hospitals as well as training for the health care personnel who support the mother-infant dyad during the breastfeeding period.  相似文献

It is widely believed that turnover of nitrogenous (N) compounds (especially proteins) incurs a high respiratory cost. Thus, if protein turnover costs change with temperature, this would influence the dependence of respiration rate on growth temperature. Here, we examined the extent to which protein turnover cost explained differences in N-utilization costs (nitrate uptake/reduction, ammonium assimilation, amino acid and protein syntheses, protein turnover and amino acid export) and in respiration rate with changes in growth temperature. By measurements and literature data, we evaluated each N-utilization cost in Petunia x hybrida petals grown at 20, 25 or 35 degrees C throughout their whole lifespans. Protein turnover cost accounted for 73% of the integrated N-utilization cost on a whole-petal basis at 35 degrees C. The difference in this cost on a dry weight basis between 25 and 35 degrees C accounted for 75% of the difference in N-utilization cost and 45% of the difference in respiratory cost. The cost of nitrate uptake/reduction was high at low growth temperatures. We concluded that respiratory cost in petals was strongly influenced by protein turnover and nitrate uptake/reduction, and on the shoot basis, C investment in biomass was highest at 25 degrees C.  相似文献

The human APOBEC3 family of cytidine deaminases constitutes a cellular intrinsic defense mechanism that is effective against a range of viruses and retro-elements. While it is well-established that these enzymes are powerful mutators of viral DNA, the possibility that their activity could threaten the integrity of the host genome has only recently begun to be investigated. Here, we discuss the implications of new evidence suggesting that APOBEC3 proteins can mediate the deamination of cellular DNA. The maintenance of genomic integrity in the face of this potential off-target activity must require high-fidelity DNA repair and strict regulation of APOBEC3 gene expression and enzyme activity. Conversely, the ability of specific members of the APOBEC3 family to activate DNA damage signaling pathways might also reflect another way that these proteins contribute to the host immune response.Key words: APOBEC3, cytidine deaminase, AID, uracil-DNA glycosylase, DNA damage, hypermutation, genomic instability, cancer  相似文献

Resveratrol, as a natural polyphenolic compound, has a wide range of beneficial effects, which includes anti-tumor, cardiovascular protection, anti-oxidant and estrogen-like effects, and so on. Its various physiological properties are closely related to the therapeutic principle for prevention and treatment of high altitude hypoxia injury. Resveratrol may play an important role in relieving or curing high altitude diseases, especially high altitude polycythemia(HAPC). However, the literature about study and application of resveratrol in plateau medicine field is rarely reported up to now. In this review, we summarized the physiological effects of resveratrol, discussed the possible main principle of resveratrol for HAPC therapy, and looked forward to resveratrol's perspective or potential application in high altitude medicine.  相似文献

Endotherms must warm ingested food to body temperature. Food warming costs may be especially high for nectar-feeding birds, which can ingest prodigious volumes. We formulated a mathematical model to predict the cost of warming nectar as a function of nectar temperature and sugar concentration. This model predicts that the cost of warming nectar should: (1) decrease as a power function of nectar concentration, and (2) increase linearly with the difference between body temperature and nectar temperature. We tested our model on rufous hummingbirds (Selasphorus rufus). A typical experiment consisted of feeding birds nectar of a given concentration at 39°C (equivalent to body temperature) and then at 4°C, and vice versa. We used the percentage change in metabolic rate between the two food temperatures to estimate the cost of warming nectar. The model's predictions were accurately met. When birds had to hover rather than perch during feeding bouts, estimated food-warming costs were only slightly lower. The cost of warming nectar to body temperature appears to be an important yet overlooked aspect of the energy budgets of nectar-feeding birds. Linear additivity of synaptic input is a pervasive assumption in computational neuroscience, and previously Bernander et al. (Journal of Neurophysiology 72:2743–2753, 1994) point out that the sublinear additivity of a passive neuronal model can be linearized with voltage-dependent currents. Here we re-examine this perspective in light of more recent findings and issues. Based on in vivo intracellular recordings, three voltage-dependent conductances seem to be of interest for pyramidal cells of the forebrain: two of them are amplifying, I NaP and I h ; and one of them is attenuating, I A . Based on particular I-V characteristics reported in the literature, each of these three voltage-dependent currents linearizes a particular range of synaptic excitation. Computational simulations use a steady-state, one-compartment model. They establish maximal linear ranges, where supralinear effects—due to adding too much of any one conductance—limit these ranges. Specific, carefully selected pairwise combinations of these currents can linearize larger ranges than either current alone. In terms of parameters, the steady-state I-V characteristics of each current are critical. On the other hand, the relationships between the results here and resting conductance to ground, synaptic conductance, and number of active synapses are simple and easily scaled; thus in regard to these three latter dependences, the results here are easily generalized. Finally, to improve our understanding of evolved function, the relative metabolic costs of linearization are quantified. In one case, there is a clear preference arising from this cost consideration (a particular I h , I NaP pairing is less costly compared to a particular I A , I NaP pairing that produces an equivalent, linearized range). However in other cases, a preference will depend on the required range; but in any event, the largest linearized range observed here (28 mV), from a combination of I h and I A , is significantly more costly than the 20 mV range that the I h , I NaP pair produces.  相似文献

The handicap principle states that stable biological signals must be honest and costly to produce. The cost of the signal should reflect the true quality of the signaller. Here, it is argued that honest signalling may be maintained although the used signals are not handicaps. A game theoretic model in the form of a game of signalling is presented: all the existing evolutionarily stable strategies (ESSs) are found. Honest and cheap signalling of male quality is shown to be evolutionarily stable if females divorce the mate if it turns out that he has cheated about his quality. However, for this ESS to apply, the cost of lost time must not be too great. The stability of the honest signalling is based on deceivers being prevented from spreading in the population because they suffer from a cost of divorce. Under some fairly strict conditions, a mixed polymorphism of dishonesty and honesty represents another possible ESS.  相似文献

Photoinhibition is an inevitable consequence of oxygenic photosynthesis. However, the concept of a 'photoinhibition-proof' plant in which photosystem II (PSII) is immune to photodamage is useful as a benchmark for considering the performances of plants with varying mixes of mechanisms which limit the extent of photodamage and which repair photodamage. Some photodamage is bound to occur, and the energy costs of repair are the direct costs of repair plus the photosynthesis foregone during repair. One mechanism permitting partial avoidance of photodamage is restriction of the number of photons incident on the photosynthetic apparatus per unit time, achieved by phototactic movement of motile algae to places with lower incident photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), by phototactic movement of plastids within cells to positions that minimize the incident PAR and by photonastic relative movements of parts of photolithotrophs attached to a substrate. The other means of avoiding photodamage is dissipating excitation of photosynthetic pigments including state transitions, non-photochemical quenching by one of the xanthophyll cycles or some other process and photochemical quenching by increased electron flow through PSII involving CO? and other acceptors, including the engagement of additional electron transport pathways. These mechanisms inevitably have the potential to decrease the rate of growth. As well as the decreased photosynthetic rates as a result of photodamage and the restrictions on photosynthesis imposed by the repair, avoidance, quenching and scavenging mechanisms, there are also additional energy, nitrogen and phosphorus costs of producing and operating repair, avoidance, quenching and scavenging mechanisms. A comparison is also made between the costs of photoinhibition and those of other plant functions impeded by the occurrence of oxygenic photosynthesis, i.e. the competitive inhibition of the carboxylase activity of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase by oxygen via the oxygenase activity, and oxygen damage to nitrogenase in diazotrophic organisms.  相似文献
