The 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) degrading bacterium, Burkholderia cepacia (formerly Pseudomonas cepacia) DBO1(pRO101) was coated on non-sterile barley (Hordeum vulgare) seeds, which were planted in two non-sterile soils amended with varying amounts of 2,4-D herbicide. In the presence of 10 or 100 mg 2,4-D per kg soil B. cepacia DBO1(pRO101) readily colonized the root at densities up to 107 CFU per cm root. In soil without 2,4-D the bacterium showed weak root colonization. The seeds coated with B. cepacia DBO1(pRO101) were able to germinate and grow in soils containing 10 or 100 mg kg–1 2,4-D, while non-coated seeds either did not germinate or quickly withered after germination. The results suggest that colonization of the plant roots by the herbicide-degrading B. cepacia DBO1(pRO101) can protect the plant by degradation of the herbicide in the rhizosphere soil. The study shows that the ability to degrade certain pesticides should be considered, when searching for potential plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria. The role of root colonization by xenobiotic degrading bacteria is further discussed in relation to bioremediation of contaminated soils.  相似文献

Plant pathogenic fungi survive in soils in a quiescent state. In order for many root-pathogen interactions to be initiated, dormant propagules must be activated by molecules present in seed and root exudates. Without the release of such stimulatory molecules, the majority of root infections do not occur. Currently, little is known about the specific molecules involved in stimulating propagule germination and initiating root-pathogen interactions. Although certain molecules can be shown to elicit germination responses in vitro, responses of propagules reared on conventional culture media do not always reflect the responses of those formed on plant tissues in soil. Consequently, it is not possible to extend conclusions from laboratory determinations of the role of specific exudate molecules in stimulating fungal propagule germination to soil systems. The interaction of Pythium species with germinating seeds has served as a model system to answer questions about propagule behavior and the role of exudate stimulant molecules in establishing root-fungus interactions. The potential role of both volatile and water-soluble molecules in stimulating propagule germination are discussed.  相似文献

The phytotoxic effects of two allelochemicals (trans-cinnamic acid and syringaldehyde) at different concentrations (1000, 100, 10, and 1 µM) on seed germination, seedling growth, and physiological and biochemical changes of Echinochloa crus-galli L. were tested by comparison to a commercial herbicide ‘Nominee’ (that is, 100 g/L bispyribac-sodium). trans-Cinnamic acid and the herbicide inhibited seed germination completely at 100 µM, whereas for syringaldehyde, complete inhibition required 1000 µM. However, with 100 µM syringaldehyde, the seed germination of the test species was 53% of the control. Allelochemicals and the herbicide delayed seed germination and significantly affected the speed of germination index (S), speed of cumulative germination index (AS), and coefficient of germination rate (CRG). The roots were more affected when nutrients were not added to the growth bioassay. In general, with the increasing concentration of allelochemicals from 100 to 1000 µM, the inhibitory effects increased. Via microscopy analysis, we found leaf blade wilting and necrosis at concentrations above 100 µM in allelochemical-treated plants. Roots of E. crus-galli treated with 1000 µM allelochemicals had black points on root nodes but had no root hairs. The anatomy of roots treated with allelochemicals (1000 µM) showed contraction or reduction of root pith cells as well as fewer and larger vacuoles compared to the control. The allelochemicals also showed remarkable effects on seedling growth, SPAD index, chlorophyll content, and free proline content in a pot culture bioassay, indicating that trans-cinnamic acid and syringaldehyde are potent inhibitors of E. crus-galli growth and can be developed as herbicides for future weed management strategies.

Abstract

Trifluralin, a pre-emergent herbicide, is widely used in Brazil in the weed grass management in restoration areas. The objective was to evaluate the tolerance of Piptadenia gonoacantha to trifluralin. The treatments had three trifluralin doses (445, 890, and 1335?g a.i. ha?1), applied in pre-sowing, as well as the control, without herbicide. Visual intoxication, seed germination, survival rate, emergence speed index (EMI), mean germination period, seedling height, and diameter, micromorphometric parameters of plant roots collected at 60 d after sowing, root length (RL) and volume, leaf area (LA), leaf numbers, root and shoot dry matter, and fluorescence of chlorophyll a at 30, 45, and 60 d after sowing were analyzed. Visual intoxication values above 50% were observed only with 1335?g a.i. ha?1. The herbicide did not affect seed germination, EMI, average germination period, seedling height, and diameter, root micromorphometric parameters, length, dry matter or root volume, and chlorophyll a fluorescence. The dose 1335?g a.i. ha?1 caused a reduction of 41.5% in survival, 50.3% in the LA, 36.7% in the number of leaves (LN), and 59.8% in the aerial dry mass of seedlings. The trifluralin presents potential for restoration programs of degraded areas with this forest species.  相似文献

Root dynamics and global change: seeking an ecosystem perspective   总被引:22,自引:3,他引:22
Changes in the production and turnover of roots in forests and grasslands in response to rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations, elevated temperatures, altered precipitation, or nitrogen deposition could be a key link between plant responses and longer-term changes in soil organic matter and ecosystem carbon balance. Here we summarize the experimental observations, ideas, and new hypotheses developed in this area in the rest of this volume. Three central questions are posed. Do elevated atmospheric CO2, nitrogen deposition, and climatic change alter the dynamics of root production and mortality? What are the consequences of root responses to plant physiological processes? What are the implications of root dynamics to soil microbial communities and the fate of carbon in soil? Ecosystem-level observations of root production and mortality in response to global change parameters are just starting to emerge. The challenge to root biologists is to overcome the profound methodological and analytical problems and assemble a more comprehensive data set with sufficient ancillary data that differences between ecosystems can be explained. The assemblage of information reported herein on global patterns of root turnover, basic root biology that controls responses to environmental variables, and new observations of root and associated microbial responses to atmospheric and climatic change helps to sharpen our questions and stimulate new research approaches. New hypotheses have been developed to explain why responses of root turnover might differ in contrasting systems, how carbon allocation to roots is controlled, and how species differences in root chemistry might explain the ultimate fate of carbon in soil. These hypotheses and the enthusiasm for pursuing them are based on the firm belief that a deeper understanding of root dynamics is critical to describing the integrated response of ecosystems to global change.  相似文献

Phytohormones play central roles in boosting plant tolerance to environmental stresses, which negatively affect plant productivity and threaten future food security. Strigolactones (SLs), a class of carotenoid‐derived phytohormones, were initially discovered as an “ecological signal” for parasitic seed germination and establishment of symbiotic relationship between plants and beneficial microbes. Subsequent characterizations have described their functional roles in various developmental processes, including root development, shoot branching, reproductive development, and leaf senescence. SLs have recently drawn much attention due to their essential roles in the regulation of various physiological and molecular processes during the adaptation of plants to abiotic stresses. Reports suggest that the production of SLs in plants is strictly regulated and dependent on the type of stresses that plants confront at various stages of development. Recently, evidence for crosstalk between SLs and other phytohormones, such as abscisic acid, in responses to abiotic stresses suggests that SLs actively participate within regulatory networks of plant stress adaptation that are governed by phytohormones. Moreover, the prospective roles of SLs in the management of plant growth and development under adverse environmental conditions have been suggested. In this review, we provide a comprehensive discussion pertaining to SL‐mediated plant responses and adaptation to abiotic stresses.  相似文献

A physico-chemical process has been developed to transform and enhance lignocellulosic waste in liquid humic extracts: humic-like substances (HLS). The aim of this study was to determine the effects of HLS on plant physiology in order to consider their agricultural use as organic fertilizers. The effects of HLS were evaluated on maize seed germination, and their impact on growth, development and mineral nutrition was studied on maize plants cultivated under hydroponic conditions. The experimental results showed that HLS do not increase the percentage and rate of germination but enhance the root elongation of seeds thus treated. Positive effects were also observed on the whole plant growth as well as on root, shoot and leaf biomass. These effects can be related to the high water and mineral consumption of plants undergoing this treatment. The high water efficiency indicated that such plants produce more biomass than non-treated plants for the same consumption of the nutrient solution. Furthermore, the use of HLS induced a flowering precocity and modified root development suggesting a possible interaction of HLS with developmental processes. Considering the beneficial effect of HLS on different stages of plant growth, their use may present various scientific and economic advantages. The physico-chemical transformation of sawdust is an interesting way of enhancing organic waste materials.  相似文献

Adaptations to overcrowding of individual plants result in density dependant control of growth and development. There is little information on how anthropogenic stresses modify these responses. We investigated whether combinations of diclofop‐methyl herbicide and tropospheric ozone alter the pattern of expected growth compensation with density changes resulting from intraspecific competition in Lolium multiforum Lam (Poacea) plants. Individual plant vegetative parameters and total seed production were assessed for plants growing under various densities and different herbicide rates and ozone treatments. The stressors differently changed the frequency distribution for average individual plant weight resulting from increasing densities. Only herbicide affected seedling mortality. Plants were able to compensate during grain filling maintaining similar seed production – density relationships in all treatments. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the impact of stress factors on the demographic changes in plant populations. Important ecological implications arise: (i) contrasting responses to ozone and herbicide, alone and in combination of individual plants resulted in different biomass – density relationships; (ii) stress effects on plant populations could not be predicted from individual responses; and (iii) changes in competitive outcome by single or combined stress factors may alter the expected genotype frequency in a crowded population with few dominant individuals.  相似文献

Tribenuron-methyl is the active substance of the herbicide used for weed control in crops. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in the metabolic response of seeds, seedlings and leaves of Centaurea cyanus L., depending on the degree of resistance to tribenuron-methyl. Changes in the values of selected biochemical and physiological parameters (germination index, chemical composition, photochemical efficiency of photosystem II and the emission spectra of blue-green fluorescence) presented herein make it possible to determine the differences between cornflower biotypes with various types of resistance to the tested herbicide. Moreover, differences in the chemical composition of dry seeds between biotypes susceptible and resistant to tribenuron-methyl were observed before using the herbicide. The degree of resistance to the herbicide—resistant or susceptible, but not the types of this resistance-mutational or metabolic, can be distinguished on the basis of the presented parameters. These findings allow for early diagnosis of the resistance of cornflower to tribenuron-methyl. Additionally, we suggest that the described parameters might be used as physiochemical markers for early estimation of weed resistance to various types of herbicide. The presented conclusions are especially important for agricultural practice.  相似文献

Although fitness costs associated with plant defensive traits are widely expected, they are not universally detected, calling into question their generality. Here, we examine the potential for life‐history trade‐offs associated with herbicide resistance by examining seed germination, root growth, and above‐ground growth across 43 naturally occurring populations of Ipomoea purpurea that vary in their resistance to RoundUp ® , the most commonly used herbicide worldwide. We find evidence for life‐history trade‐offs associated with all three traits; highly resistant populations had lower germination, shorter roots, and smaller above‐ground size. A visual exploration of the data indicated that the type of trade‐off may differ among populations. Our results demonstrate that costs of adaptation may be present at stages other than simply the production of progeny in this agricultural weed. Additionally, the cumulative effect of costs at multiple life cycle stages can result in severe consequences to fitness when adapting to novel environments.  相似文献

Phytochromes are a family of plant photoreceptors that mediate physiological and developmental responses to changes in red and far-red light conditions. In Arabidopsis, there are genes for at least five phytochrome proteins. These photoreceptors control such responses as germination, stem elongation, flowering, gene expression, and chloroplast and leaf development. However, it is not known which red light responses are controlled by which phytochrome species, or whether the different phytochromes have overlapping functions. We report here that previously described hy3 mutants have mutations in the gene coding for phytochrome B (PhyB). These are the first mutations shown to lie in a plant photoreceptor gene. A number of tissues are abnormally elongated in the hy3(phyB) mutants, including hypocotyls, stems, petioles, and root hairs. In addition, the mutants flower earlier than the wild type, and they accumulate less chlorophyll. PhyB thus controls Arabidopsis development at numerous stages and in multiple tissues.  相似文献

We investigated the solubilizing activity of the Basidiomycete fungi Trametes hirsuta and Trametes maxima, with respect to brown coal (lignite) during liquid phase cultivation. We found that the degrading capacity of the fungi is determined by the activity of the ligninolytic enzymes Mn peroxidase and lignin peroxidase. We assessed the growth-stimulating activity of biopreparations (BPs), based on the culture liquids (CL) of the studied fungal strains, which were grown on a rich or minimal medium. We found that the obtained BPs inhibited the growth of wheat shoots and roots at the germination stage, but they either had no effect at later stages of plant growth or showed a mild stimulation. When basidiomycetes were cultivated in the presence of brown coal, the obtained BPs stimulated root growth at the germination stage, and did not influence plant growth (Trametes hirsuta) or stimulated it (Trametes maxima) at later stages. Further, we report a pronounced detoxifying ability of the BPs in respect to the atrazine herbicide. We suggest that this effect is caused by the laccases action, that are present in the studied BPs.  相似文献

Root research requires high throughput phenotyping methods that provide meaningful information on root depth if the full potential of the genomic revolution is to be translated into strategies that maximise the capture of water deep in soils by crops. A very simple, low cost method of assessing root depth of seedlings using a layer of herbicide (TRIK or diuron) buried 25 or 30 cm deep in soil‐filled boxes of varying size is described that is suitable for screening hundreds or thousands of rice accessions in controlled environment conditions. Variation in cultivar sensitivity to the herbicide when injected into pots was detected but considered small in relation to the variation detected when the herbicide was buried. Using 32 rice cultivars previously characterised for root traits in rhizotron and hydroponic systems, 80% of variation in herbicide score at 35 days was explained by cultivar and herbicide score correlated strongly with rooting depth traits. Using 139 genotypes of the Bala × Azucena mapping population, heritability for herbicide symptoms reached 55% and quantitative trait loci were detected which match those previously reported in this population. In repeated experiments using different soils, the method did not always perform to its maximum potential (in terms of speed of symptom development or discrimination between cultivars). This was not due to degradation or reduced bio‐availability of the herbicide in the soil but is believed to be due to the soil water content and water release characteristics as it relates to plant water use. Therefore, when using this technique, thorough preliminary experiments to determine the best water application regime for the particular combination of soil and environmental conditions are required. The method should be applicable to seedling stage screening of rice and other crops.  相似文献

Summary The analog described in Part I is used to investigate quantitatively the the effects of pattern and density on the uptake and uptake rate of nutrients which move to plant roots by diffusion. The uptake by two roots is considered first, to illustrate the competitive effect. The results for multiple root systems are given for a variety of different soil and plant parameters at different times and demonstrate the importance of pattern and density in the uptake of different plant nutrients in both competitive and non competitive situations. Pattern can decrease the uptake by root systems by at least 75 per cent, depending on the value of the diffusion coefficient, time, and root density. Graphs of two indices of dispersion against uptake are given so that the effect of any pattern can be estimated. A procedure is outlined which enables the uptake after any time by a developing root system to be predicted and compared with a theoretical maximum. If the uptake is known, then the graphs show whether soil or plant parameters are limiting uptake.  相似文献

THE HATCHING RESPONSES OF SOME ROOT EELWORMS OF THE GENUS HETERODERA   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An account is given of investigations on the hatching responses, under laboratory conditions, of nine species or varieties of Heterodera , namely, the beet, cabbage, clover, Galeopsis , carrot, hop, potato, oat and pea eelworms. In the first seven of these, marked differences occurred in hatching responses from cysts incubated in root leachings from various plants, these differences being virtually diagnostic for the eelworm species concerned. In general, good responses to leachings from host plants occurred, whereas there was little or no response in non-host leachings; but cases of response to non-hosts and of failure to respond to hosts were encountered. Promising results were obtained in the analysis, by bio-assay, of mixtures of some of these eelworm species. No appreciable response occurred from cysts of oat and pea eelworms incubated in host leachings, but there was some evidence that such a response did occur from pea eelworm cysts under field conditions. Curves for rate of hatching of seven species and for hatching in diluted leachings in five species were found to be of the form described by Fenwick for potato eelworm. Results are given of some experiments on the effect of age of plant on potency of the root leachings, and on the loss of potency during storage.  相似文献

Plants constitute an excellent ecosystem for microorganisms. The environmental conditions offered differ considerably between the highly variable aerial plant part and the more stable root system. Microbes interact with plant tissues and cells with different degrees of dependence. The most interesting from the microbial ecology point of view, however, are specific interactions developed by plant-beneficial (either non-symbiotic or symbiotic) and pathogenic microorganisms. Plants, like humans and other animals, also become sick, but they have evolved a sophisticated defense response against microbes, based on a combination of constitutive and inducible responses which can be localized or spread throughout plant organs and tissues. The response is mediated by several messenger molecules that activate pathogen-responsive genes coding for enzymes or antimicrobial compounds, and produces less sophisticated and specific compounds than immunoglobulins in animals. However, the response specifically detects intracellularly a type of protein of the pathogen based on a gene-for-gene interaction recognition system, triggering a biochemical attack and programmed cell death. Several implications for the management of plant diseases are derived from knowledge of the basis of the specificity of plant-bacteria interactions. New biotechnological products are currently being developed based on stimulation of the plant defense response, and on the use of plant-beneficial bacteria for biological control of plant diseases (biopesticides) and for plant growth promotion (biofertilizers). Grazing is known as one of the key factors for diversity and community composition in grassland ecosystems, but the response of plant communities towards grazing varies remarkably between sites with different environmental conditions. It is generally accepted that grazing increases plant diversity in productive environments, while it tends to reduce diversity in unproductive habitats (grazing reversal hypothesis). Despite empirical evidence for this pattern the mechanistic link between modes of plant–plant competition and grazing response at the community level still remains poorly understood. Root‐competition in particular has rarely been included in theoretical studies, although it has been hypothesized that variations in productivity and grazing regime can alter the relative importance of shoot‐ and root‐competition. We therefore developed an individual‐based model based on plant functional traits to investigate the response of a grassland community towards grazing. Models of different complexity, either incorporating only shoot competition or with distinct shoot‐ and root‐competition, were used to study the interactive effects of grazing, resource availability, and the mode of competition (size‐symmetric or asymmetric). The pattern predicted by the grazing reversal hypothesis (GRH) can only be explained by our model if shoot‐ and root‐competition are explicitly considered and if size asymmetry of above‐ and symmetry of below‐ground competition is assumed. For this scenario, the model additionally reproduced empirically observed plant trait responses: erect and large plant functional types (PFTs) dominated without grazing, while frequent grazing favoured small PFTs with a rosette growth form. We conclude that interactions between shoot‐ and root‐competition and size symmetry/asymmetry of plant–plant interactions are crucial in order to understand grazing response under different habitat productivities. Our results suggest that future empirical trait surveys in grassland communities should include root traits, which have been largely ignored in previous studies, in order to improve predictions of plants’ responses to grazing.  相似文献

Root morphology influences strongly plant/soil interactions. However, the complexity of root architecture is a major barrier when analysing many phenomena, e.g. anchorage, water or nutrient uptake. Therefore, we have developed a new approach for the representation and modelling of root architecture based on branching density. A general root branching density in a space of finite dimension was used and enabled us to consider various morphological properties. A root system model was then constructed which minimizes the difference between measured and simulated root systems, expressed with functions which map root density in the soil. The model was tested in 2D using data from Maritime pine Pinus pinaster Ait. structural roots as input. We showed that simulated and real root systems had similar root distributions in terms of radial distance, depth, branching angle and branching order. These results indicate that general density functions are not only a powerful basis for constructing models of architecture, but can also be used to represent such structures when considering root/soil interaction. These models are particularly useful in that they provide a local morphological characterization which is aggregated in a given unit of soil volume.  相似文献

Plants are able to cope with herbivores by inducing defensive traits or growth responses that allow them to reduce or avoid the impact of herbivores. Since above‐ and belowground herbivores differ substantially in life‐history traits, for example feeding types, and their spatial distribution, it is likely that they induce different responses in plants. Moreover, strong interactive effects on defense and plant growth are expected when above‐ and belowground herbivores are jointly present. The strengths and directions of these responses have been scarcely addressed in the literature. Using Taraxacum officinale, the root‐feeding nematode Meloidogyne hapla and the locust Schistocerca gregaria as a model species, we examined to what degree above‐ and belowground herbivory affect (1) plant growth responses, (2) the induction of plant defensive traits, that is, leaf trichomes, and (3) changes in dispersal‐related seed traits and seed germination. We compared the performance of plants originating from different populations to address whether plant responses are conserved across putative different genotypes. Overall, aboveground herbivory resulted in increased plant biomass. Root herbivory had no effect on plant growth. Plants exposed to the two herbivores showed fewer leaf trichomes than plants challenged only by one herbivore and consequently experienced greater aboveground herbivory. In addition, herbivory had effects that reached beyond the individual plant by modifying seed morphology, producing seeds with longer pappus, and germination success.  相似文献
