Viscin threads and other pollen connecting threads of some angiosperm families were investigated, especially those ofEricaceae. According to the definition adopted, viscin threads are ± long exinous processes which consist of exinous material and connect pollen grains or tetrads. Such viscin threads are found within theOnagraceae, Caesalpiniaceae, Ericaceae, andMimosaceae only. While they differ in structure and composition, they always consist of sporopollenin and exhibit a very strong stickiness, even after all viscid substances have been removed by acetolysis. In contrast, the pollen connecting scleroprotein threads ofOrchidaceae and the cellular threads ofStrelitzia reginae Aiton. (Musaceae) are not connected with the exine surface, are destroyed by acetolysis, and thus do not correspond to viscin threads.

The pollen morphology of four species: Gaultheria leschenaultii (Ericaceae), Psychotria zeylanica (Rubiaceae), Rubus leucocarpus (Rosaceae) and Symplocos bractealis (Symplocaceae) from Horton Plains, Sri Lanka was investigated using LM and SEM. Psychotria zeylanica is endemic to Sri Lanka and the other three taxa are common in Horton Plains. Gaultheria leschenaultii has tetrads with 3-colporate, coarsely granular to granulo-rugulate pollen grains; in the polar region and at the colpus margin the exine is smooth with micro-rugulate structure. Psychotria zeylanica has 3- (or 4-) colporate, reticulate-spinulose to granular pollen grains. Rubus leucocarpus has 3-colporate, striate-perforate pollen grains and Symplocos bractealis has 3- (or 4-) colporate pollen grains with a verrucate-perforate exine. Pollen grains of these four species are very indicative of human impact and palaeoclimate.  相似文献

Aperture morphology of tetrad pollen of Epilobium luteum (Onagraceae: Epilobieae) from three Alaskan collections is highly variable. The first collection appears to lack apertures altogether and is presumed to consist of immature pollen gains in a genus known to achieve mature size before the apertures become distinctly protruding. A second collection has tetrads with 3- and 4-apertured grains, the apertures in the latter are often irregularly spaced and not in apposition with the apertures of neighboring members. The third collection consists of the more typical 3-apertured members that characterize the majority of Epilobium pollen grains. In all of these collections individual pollen grains (monads) are interspersed among the tetrads. The variations in the number of apertures emphasize the importance of having a comprehensive understanding of the stage of development of the pollen (taxon) examined when describing pollen collections. In the first collection this would mean the recognition that in Onagraceae apertures occur in the later stages of microspore ontogeny. In the latter two collections a thorough background of the literature of the pollen morphology on this largest Onagraceae taxon is useful for the understanding of the significance of a range of aperture numbers on Epilobium pollen grains.  相似文献

Summary The family Ericaceae is considered to be mostly hermaphroditic and only in a few cases unisexual or dioecious. Five Argentinian species (Gaultheria antarctica Hook, f., G. caespitosa P. et E., G. phillyreaefolia (Pers.) Sleumer, G. tenuifolia (Phil.) Sleumer and Pernettya insana (Molina) Gunckel), previously described as hermaphroditic, were found by us to have two types of flowers: female and male. Female flowers have both a rudimentary androecium with stamens, in which the anthers are small, collapsed and without pollen grains or are reduced to filaments only, and a perfect gynoecium with well-developed ovules filling the carpel locules. The stigma is expanded and of the wet, papillate type, with copious to slight secretion. The stigma protrudes above the anthers. Male flowers have a well-developed androecium included within the corolla and a reduced gynoecium. Anthers are as long as the filaments, except in G. caespitosa. Pollen is shed as tetrads which are 100% viable. Ovule development ranges from total absence, passing through aborted ovules of various sizes to apparently normal ones. Stigmata are neither expanded nor papillate, except in Pernettya insana. Only in two species do the style and stigma extend beyond the level of the anthers. Heterostyly does not occur in any of the five species studied. Functional dioecy thus characterizes the five species considered and is reported for the first time in the genus Gaultheria.  相似文献

Pollen morphology can be useful in the determination of phylogeny and mating systems of plants. Pollen ovule ratios can give an indication of the mating system of plant species, and there are a number of theories as to reductions in response to pollination strategies. Pollen tetrad segregation occurs when a number of pollen grains within a tetrad abort; this process has evolved a number of times in the family Ericaceae. Pollen ovule ratios along with the total number of tetrads, number of viable grains and proportions of each of the tetrad types were investigated in six species of Acrotriche (Styphelioideae: Ericaceae). Pollen ovule ratios were used in comparison with related species to give indications of mating systems and to examine theories regarding reductions in pollen production. The study species can be arranged into distinct groupings based on the proportions of tetrad types that correlate with floral morphology and may be indicative of phylogentic associations.  相似文献

Anther development, microsporogenesis and microgametogenesis in several species of Heliconia were investigated as part of a complementary embryological study of the Heliconiaceae. All studied Heliconia species present bithecate and tetrasporangiate anthers with fertile pollen grains; only H. rivularis, a natural hybrid, presented sterile pollen grains of variable size and no content. The anther wall has an uniseriate epidermis and endothecium, the latter with helicoidal thickenings, although some cells of the middle layers also showed thickenings; the biseriate tapetum is of amoeboid non-syncytial type, since the tapetum cells did not fuse together forming a true plasmodium. The microsporogenesis is successive leading to isobilateral tetrads. The inaperturate pollen grains had a very reduced exine consisting of a thin, more or less continuous layer with small spines upon; the pollen grain shape is variable among the species, all of them presenting heteropolar pollen, except H. angusta with isopolar ones. Most of these characteristics were shared with other studied Zingiberales, although more studies need to be done.  相似文献

Summary Pollen size and pistil length data have been collected for 93 species of Rhododendron (Ericaceae) belonging to a number of different subgeneric taxa. For a sample of eight species in section Vireya, pollen tube growth in the style after selfor interspecific pollination has been quantified. Pollen volume and the time taken for pollen tubes to reach the ovary were both related to pistil length. Pollen-tube growth rates were generally greater for species with longer pistils and larger pollen. Increasing temperature increased the rate of pollen-tube growth. There was no detectable effect of pollen tube density on tube growth rate in the style. After interspecific pollinations tube growth rates in foreign styles could be faster or slower than in self styles. A semisterile individual with two viable pollen grains per tetrad and a plant grafted as scion to a longer-styled stock both showed more rapid pollen-tube growth than expected on the basis of pistil size. Data collected for 26 species in section Vireya showed that where extreme disparity of pollen/pistil size causes failure of interspecific crosses, one or more bridging species with intermediate pollen/pistil size can generally be selected.  相似文献

Pollen from 152 collections representing 16Pyrola species was examined with LM, SEM and TEM. The genusPyrola is stenopalynous in having tetrads and 3-colporoidate grains. However, a continuous and serial variation in the exine sculpture and the tetrad diameter (D) was revealed within the genus. Křísa's system ofPyrola (1971) was re-examined in the light of these palynological characters which may have a taxonomic significance, as well as the external morphology. P. minor (only member of the subgenusAmelia), which is characterized by having small (D=30–35 μm) pollen tetrads with verrucate sculpture must best be placed near sectionPyrola of the subgenusPyrola. P. faurieana must be segregated from sectionChlorantha and together withP. media placed intermediate between the subgenusAmelia and sectionPyrola of the subgenusPyrola based on their larger (D=ca. 40 μm) pollen tetrads with verrucate sculpture. Two series of sectionChlorantha excludingP. faurieana are differentiated in the exine sculpture. Therefore, they are regarded as the distinct taxonomic groups. SectionScotophylla is characterized by having psilate sculptured pollen tetrads, which indicates that its sectional rank is sufficiently asserted. The evolutionary trend in the exine sculpture from verrucate through rugulate to psilate is suggested withinPyrola.  相似文献

In Onagraceae, pollen is shed in mature tetrads in most Epilobieae, many species of Ludwigia (Jussiaeeae), and two closely related species of the large genus Camissonia (Onagreae). Mature tetrads of Camissonia cardiophylla and representative species of Epilobium and Ludwigia were examined with light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopes. Morphological diagnoses of monad units indicated that individual taxa could be readily distinguished. Statistical analyses of tetrads which remained after acetolysis treatment revealed significant differences in the strength of the binding mechanisms. Mechanisms of tetrad cohesion were found to consist of two principal types. Common to all taxa is cohesion of pollen wall surfaces at the aperture margins; this mechanism is well known in many angiosperm groups. With the exception of Camissonia, the remaining taxa also display binding by means of short exine fragments between adjacent pollen units. These fragments, termed bridges and reported here for the first time, are located in the area extending from the aperture margins to near the center of the proximal exine faces. Thin sections reveal that layers of the bridges are identical with those of the exine. Comparisons were made between bridges and viscin threads, both of which occur on the proximal faces of the grains. Viscin threads are present on all pollen grains in Onagraceae and exhibit distinctive morphologies, and bridges were viewed morphogenetically as related to viscin threads but including an endexine layer and occupying a position near the apertures where cohesion of wall surfaces also occurs. In an evolutionary sense, the formation of mature tetrads almost certainly occurred independently in Camissonia and may have done so in Ludwigia and the Epilobieae.  相似文献

The structure of the massulae composing the pollinium ofLoroglossum hircinum was studied before pollination and 12 and 24 hours afterwards. The grains are grouped in tetrads closely packed in massulae. The exine is only present on the outside of the massulae. The intine consists of two layers: a compact layer surrounding the pollen grain and a looser layer surrounding the pollen grain and a looser layer surrounding the tetrad. Twelve hours after pollination, pollen volume and the space between the tetrads increase due to vacuolization. Twenty-four hours after pollination, pollen volume and tetrad spacing are higher due to vacuolization and some grains have emitted pollen tubes. Pollen growth due to vacuole formation, and the absence of common walls between adjacent tetrads lead to crumbling of the massulae. The mature pollen grain does not have apertures: the site of pollen tube emission is determined after pollination. The first grains to germinate are those in the centre of the massula. The vegetative cell nucleus is the first to enter the pollen tube; the generative cell elongates and undergoes the second haploid mitosis shortly after entering the pollen tube.  相似文献

Pollen of 41 species representing all seven genera of the Neottieae were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Except for Lecanorchis, the genera of the Neottieae constitute a natural group based on pollen morphology. Pollen occurs as single grains in the primitive species and in tetrads in the other species. Most grains are monoaperturate, porate or tenuate, and the tetrads often have irregularly shaped grains. Exine structure varies from tectate-perforate to semitectate. Lecanorchis is anomalous among the Neottieae in that it has 0–5, sunken, relatively small pores. Pollen morphology of this genus indicates that it is probably more closely related to the Gastrodieae than the Neottieae. There are at least four basic phyletic units in the Orchidaceae: the Neottioideae, Apostasioideae, Cypripedioideae, and Epidendroideae. These groups are distinguished by the presence of monads in at least their more primitive members and by their unique pollen types.  相似文献

Pollen of Zygogynum balansae and Z. pomiferum is described with the aid of the scanning electron microscope. Other members of the primitive ranalean family Winteraceae hitherto investigated have pollen in permanent tetrads, but these two species have solitary grains. Sculpturing is similar on the distal and proximal faces of each grain, excluding the distal apertural zone. The exine pattern resembles that on distal faces of tetrads of other Zygogynum species investigated, including Z. bailloni, the pollen of which is illustrated. Although Zygogynum and Exospermum have rather similar pollen, with sculpturing differing from other Winteraceae in consisting of a less coarse reticulum, pollen of Exospermum stipitatum is clearly distinct from the Zygogynum species investigated, as seen in the scanning electron microscope. It is not clear whether or not the solitary pollen type has evolved from the tetrad form.  相似文献

Pterostylis plumosa (Neottioideae) is an orchid with monosulcate monad pollen. Tetrads may be isobilateral, decussate, tetrahedral, rhomboid or T-shaped, but all pollen grains have a similar shape. Those belonging to the same tetrads are contiguous from microspore release to opening of the anther, with the furrow oriented inwards. Sporophytic proteins are present outside the furrow. The tapetum is of the parietal type without orbicles. The increase in pollen grain size between meiosis and maturity is only three-fold. The generative cell is spherical when the pollen is mature. These features are discussed in relation to the primitive nature of the species.  相似文献

The evolutionary and developmental origin of tricolpate pollen is of great interest because pollen of this kind defines a major clade of angiosperms (eudicots), a clade that is also well supported by molecular data. We examined evidence that tricolpate and monosulcate pollen types are produced alongside each other in the anthers of Nelumbo flowers, as has previously been reported. Observations of pollen in situ within individual anthers revealed mainly tricolpate pollen produced in tetrahedral tetrads, but also a small percentage of clearly aberrant pollen grains that have a great variety of aperture configurations. Previously published evidence for tetragonal tetrads is not supported, and previously reported monosulcate grains are part of a continuum of variation among the aberrant grains in aperture number, position and form. Other eudicots show similar variability in their pollen apertures. The variation in the pollen of Nelumbo is not exceptional, and may not be more significant than variation seen in the other taxa with regard to the origin of the tricolpate and tricolpate‐derived pollen characteristic of eudicots. Nevertheless further studies of aberrant pollen in Nelumbo and other eudicots, together with comparisons of pollen development in “normal” eudicots and closely related species that show radical, and developmentally fixed, reorganization of apertures and pollen polarity, may be helpful in understanding the processes that controlled the transition from the monosulcate to the tricolpate condition.  相似文献

A palynological survey, including LM, SEM and TEM is presented for eight genera, nine species and 76 samples of the Monotropoideae which is composed of 10 genera and 13 species. On the basis of the aperture number and shape, the following six pollen types are recognized: 1) 3-colp(oroid) ate—Allotropa, 2) 2-colpor(oid)ate—Monotropsis andHemitomes, 3) 4-colpor(oid)ate—Pterospora, Sarcodes andPleuricospora, 4) 2- and 3-colpor(oid)ate—Monotropa hypopitys, 5) 3-colporate and-porate —Monotropa uniflora, 6) 3- to 4- porate—Monotropastrum humile. Relationships among taxa within the Monotropoideae are illustrated on the palynological characters including the aperture type, exine sculpture and structure. Both pollen grains with two and four apertures have evolved independently from pollen grains with three apertures, according to the infraspecific variation of aperture numbers and the usual occurrence of three-aperturate pollen grains in the Ericaceae. 3-colp(oroid)ate pollen ofAllotropa is the most primitive and occupies an isolated position in the subfamily, on the other hand 3- to 4-porate pollen ofMonotropastrum humile is most advanced in the subfamily, probably even in the Ericaceae. A reduced sexine inMonotropastrum humile appears to be a specialized pollen character. Infraspecific geographical difference in palynological characters is revealed in two species ofMonotropa for the first time.M. hypopitys is basically characterized by pollen grains with two apertures in the New World vs. three apertures in the Old World.M. uniflora is basically characterized by 3-porate pollen in the New World vs. 3-colporate in the Old World. In both species pollen grains with more primitive characters usually occur in the Old World.  相似文献

Chinese narcissus (Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis Roem) blooms but has no seeds. Embryological studies on the species were conducted to discover the causes of its sterility. Its anther wall is composed of four layers of cells, and its tapetum is of the secretory type. The cytokinesis of microspore mother cells is of the successive type, and the tetrad is tetrahedral. During meiosis of microspore mother cells, some chromosomes lagged, and several micronuclei were found in tetrads. Only 27.7% of the pollen grains contained full cytoplasm, and 1.3% of them germinated in culture medium. No pollen grain, however, could germinate on the stigma. The ovary is trilocular with axile placenta, and the ovules are bitegmic, tenuinucellate, and anatropous. Its embryo sac is of the polygonum type. Most embryo sacs degenerated, and only about 4.5% of the ovules contained a normal embryo sac with an egg cell, two synergids, three antipodal, and a central cell containing two polar nuclei. One reason for the sterility of Chinese narcissus is the abnormality of microsporogenesis and megasporogenesis, in which only a few functional pollen grains and embryo sacs are produced. The other reason is that the pollen grains cannot germinate on the stigma. This paper was translated from Journal of Xiamen University (Natural Science), 2005, 44(1) (in Chinese)  相似文献

The morphology of pollen tetrads and viscin threads is described in fossil Ericaceae pollen from various Eocene/Oligocene/Miocene localities in Europe (Germany, Austria), North America (eastern U.S.A.), and Asia (eastern China). The typical characters of the tetrad configuration, the exine ornamentation and sculpturing, and especially the viscin thread morphology are extremely similar to or even indistinguishable from that in extant members of Rhododendron. All these pollen morphological features strongly suggest that all the investigated material can be assigned to a modern taxon of the Ericaceae: either to Rhododendroideae or even to Rhododendron itself.  相似文献

Summary Three triploid (2n=3x=36) blueberry hybrids were obtained by hand-pollinating approximately 7,000 flowers of tetraploid highbush blueberry cultivars (based on Vaccinium corymbosum L.) with pollen from the diploid species V. elliottii Chapm. Meiotic analysis of these triploids revealed trivalents, bivalents and univalents in all metaphase I cells, with lagging chromosomes evident at anaphase I. Pollen of the three triploids was mostly aborted and did not stain with acetocarmine. However, the three triploids did produce from 0.9%–1.3% giant pollen grains that stained with acetocarmine and were present as monads, dyads or triads, rather than the normal tetrads. Pollination of 10,853 flowers of hexaploid V. ashei Reade cultivars with pollen from the triploids produced 266 berries, which averaged fewer than two fully-developed seeds per berry. One triploid clone showed partial female fertility when crossed to hexaploids, self-pollinated, or intercrossed with other triploids. Ploidy levels of the resulting hybrids were determined.Florida Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Series No. 8672  相似文献
