A total of 1436 specimens were examined in the study of the food habits of the three Chrysichthys species in Lekki Lagoon. Certain differences were found in their food habits. Chrysichthys walkeri fed mostly on insects, Chrysichthys filamentosus on crustaceans and Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus on molluscs. It is suggested the observed diversity in feeding habits might be due to an active response to interspecific competition.  相似文献

The study of Myxosporidia infecting Schilbe mystus (Linné, 1758) (Schilbeidae) and Citharinus citharus (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1809) (Citharinidae) from the Sanaga and Bénoué basins revealed the presence of two new species of the genus Thelohanellus kudo, 1993. These species are Thelohanellus njinei sp. nov. and Thelohanellus lagdoensis sp. nov., found in the gut of Schilbe mystus and Citharinus citharus respectively. New data are also given on the diagnosis of Thelohanellus citharini, a species previously described in Chad.  相似文献

The food and feeding habits of Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula are described, based on field observations and on the analyses of the stomach contents of 95 birds, all but one of them having fed inland; 57 were collected from a gravel pit near London, 28 from Northern Ireland and 9 from a number of English inland waters, in the shooting seasons 1959-60 and 1960-61.
The London birds in both seasons had fed primarily on molluscs, mainly Dreissena polymorpha. The Northern Ireland birds, where D. polymorpha does not occur, had a more variable diet, again mainly molluscs, but with some crustaceans, insects and plant seeds. The English birds had a similarly variable diet with the emphasis on crustaceans ( Asellus spp.) and with some molluscs, insects and plant seeds. Brief information is given on the food of young birds.
It is suggested that the spread of D. polymorpha may be one of the factors explaining the recent spread of the Tufted Duck in certain areas. It appears that where one particular food such as D. polymorpha is not plentiful a more variable diet is taken, though molluscs always figure prominently. The type of food taken depends on the type of habitat used, the availability and size of the food items and on the methods of feeding.  相似文献

Performance of nymphs and adults of the southern green stink bug,Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) feeding on immature fruits of radish,Raphanus raphanistrum L. (Brassicaceae) was poor compared with feeding on immature soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] pods, but a change from radish to soybean from nymph to adult alleviated some of the detrimental effects of this food on adult performance. Over 50% of nymphs died on radish, while only 15% died on soybean. To complete nymph development (stadia 2 through 5), male and female nymphs required 9.5 and 13.3 days longer on radish compared to soybean. Fresh body weight of 1-d-old adult females and males was ≅65% greater for those reared as nymphs on soybean than on radish, with females being significantly heavier than males on both foods. Survivorship and longevity of females, however, was greater for those fed on radish as nymphs and as adults, as compared to those that fed on soybean or radish followed by soybean. Males lived longer when fed exclusively on soybean. In general, reproductive performance and percentage gain in adult body weight was greatest for insects fed on soybean only, and were better for those whose food was switched from nymph to adult, as compared to those insects fed on radish solely.  相似文献

The food habits and degrees of dietary overlap of lesser oriental civet ( Viverricula indica ), crab-eating mongoose ( Herpestes urva ), and ferret badger ( Melogale moschata ) inhabiting the Fushan Forest, northern Taiwan, were studied using faecal analysis between February 1993 and June 1994. Laboratory analysis of 154 civet faeces, and 174 mongoose faeces showed that both species fed on a wide variety of food items, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustaceans, insects, oligochaetes, gastropods, chilopods, arachnids, and plants. Insects, oligochaetes, plants, and mammals were the four most important food items in the civets' diet, whereas crustaceans, insects, amphibians, and reptiles were the four most important food items consumed by mongooses. Amphibians were the only vertebrates, together with invertebrates and plants, found in the 64 ferret badger faeces we analysed, and oligochaetes, insects, and amphibians were the most important food items consumed by ferret badgers. The diversity of diet was highest in the mongoose, followed by the civet, and was lowest in the ferret badger.
The degree of dietary overlap was greatest between the civet and the ferret badger, followed by that of the civet and mongoose. The mongoose and ferret badger had the lowest degree of dietary overlap. However, the degree of dietary overlap varied in different seasons. Invertebrates were the most important food source for the carnivores in Fushan Forest.  相似文献

Both species studied, Cichla cf. ocellaris and Cichla monoculus, fed mainly on fish, the first on Cichla spp., Plagioscion squamosissimus, and Tilapia rendalli, and the second, Cichla monoculus, on Cichla spp. Both diets indicated a strong correlation among the food items. Remarkable ontogenetic change was noted in both species diet: the young fed on crustaceans and insects while the adults fed mainly on fishes. The species studied, which are highly adapted to a brief life span, cause serious damage to the fish communities by predation, competition, and cascade effects throughout the whole trophic chain.  相似文献

In comparison with other bathydraconids, all species of the genus Bathydraco are poorly known from an ecological perspective. The diet of juvenile Bathydraco marri Norman, 1938 was studied for the first time in specimens collected in the southwestern Ross Sea during summer 1998. Fish were collected in a single otter trawl catch at 330–340 m depth. The stomach content analysis showed that this species fed exclusively on crustaceans. Overall, 20 prey taxa were identified to genus or species level. Mysids, amphipods and copepods were the most important prey in decreasing order of importance. Other prey, such as Euphausia superba, isopods and tanaids were eaten occasionally and in very small amounts. A multivariate analysis was applied to feeding data to assess ontogenetic or sex-related changes in diet. No difference was detected between sexes, whereas diet of small and large fish differed in some degree. An ontogenetic shift from small and pelagic crustaceans such as copepods to benthic–benthopelagic prey such as amphipods and mysids was observed. Relating present results with published data on physiological characteristics of B. marri, it was possible to infer their feeding behaviour and mode of life. Like other bathydraconids, this species appeared to be an inactive and sluggish fish, which relied on more or less motile benthic or epibenthic prey adopting a “sit and wait” feeding strategy. On the other hand, smaller fish seem to be more active, feeding also on pelagic prey such as copepods that can be seasonally abundant, thus reducing the intraspecific competition for food.  相似文献

The food and feeding habits of black oreo and smooth oreo sampled at depths of 600–1200 m from the south-west Chatham Rise in 1983 are described, with notes on prey of eight other fish species. All these fish species fed benthopelagically. Black oreo preyed on hyperiid amphipods, salps and natant decapod crustaceans; smooth oreo on salps and amphipods. Dietary composition of both species changed with size of fish. Aspects of feeding relationships between the fish species were examined including dietary similarity and prey-size selection. Findings are compared with results of research on other New Zealand deepwater fish species.  相似文献

Alternating periods of food deprivation with those of unlimited provision of food depressed the growth of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus , below that of controls. Fish that were deprived of food and then fed on alternate weeks (1:1) were larger than those that were exposed to periods of 1 5- or 3-week deprivation and feeding (1·5:1·5 or 3:3). On receiving excess food supplies following 24 weeks on the restricted feeding regimes the previously-restricted fish grew more rapidly than the controls. The greatest compensatory growth was displayed after the 3:3 regime, followed by the 1·5: 1·5 and then the 1:1 feeding regime. At the termination of the experiment there were no significant differences in body weight between fish fed according to the different regimes during the period that food restriction was imposed. Growth patterns of the immature males and females were similar, but mature males were significantly lighter than the immature fish by the end of the experiment. Both immature and maturing fish displayed a compensatory growth response on return to adequate feeding. Beginning food restriction in May did not influence the proportions of male fish ( c . 60%) which were mature in the autumn.  相似文献

Urbanisation negatively affects many species, yet small carnivores may flourish in urban spaces because of accessible resources and a reduction of predators. Food choices of urban carnivores might be influenced by the availability and abundance of anthropogenic food resources and the co-existence of competing species. We studied the food selection and feeding on carrion of the yellow mongoose (Cynictis penicillata) and slender mongoose (Galerella sanguinea) in a small urban reserve in South Africa. In cafeteria-style food choice tests, both species preferred meat and insects over bread, dog kibble, chicken eggs, and plants; however, yellow mongoose in a more urbanised area preferred bread to insects. Yellow mongoose had a shorter latency to approach and consume provided food compared to slender mongoose. At carrion-baited stations, slender mongoose were more prevalent at carcasses and displayed aggression and competitive exclusion of yellow mongoose. Slender mongoose fed more on carcasses during the colder months than warmer months when they fed on available insects around and on carcasses. The greater consumption of anthropogenic items by yellow mongoose and the preference by slender mongoose for feeding on carcasses provide evidence of possible resource partitioning, which may aid in the co-existence of these sympatric herpestids in urban areas.  相似文献

A total of 1468 young fish representing 66 taxa from the Sinnamary River, French Guiana was classified by complete cluster analysis of mean relative body width and mean relative body height into four groups. These had anguilliform, disciform, flat or intermediate body shapes and belonged chiefly to Gymnotiformes, Perciformes, Siluriformes and Characiformes, respectively. Several of the taxa shifted from one to another body shape during ontogenesis. Seven diet groups were defined by complete cluster analysis. Among these, six groups were represented by carnivorous fish. The three most frequent groups had diets of (1) mainly insect larvae and small crustaceans, (2) insect larvae, and (3) predominantly terrestrial insects. The majority of the fish taxa showed ontogenetic diet shifts. Carnivorous fish usually switched from small-size prey, such as small crustaceans, to intermediate-size prey, such as insect larvae and/or to large-size prey, such as insects and/or fish. However, taxa differed in their capacities to switch from small prey to intermediate and/or to large prey. Taxa of different body shapes had significantly different diets. Disciform fish fed mainly on aquatic insect larvae and terrestrial insects but also, in small amounts, on small curstaceans. Most anguilliform taxa ate insect larvae. Individuals belonging to the depressiform or intermediate morphotype had varied diets ranging from plant debris and substratum to fish.  相似文献

Fatty acid and stable isotope analyses have previously been used to investigate foraging patterns of fish, birds, marine mammals and most recently cephalopod species. To evaluate the application of these methods for dietary studies in squid, it is important to understand the degree to which fatty acid and stable isotope signatures of prey species are reflected in the squids' tissue. Four groups of Lolliguncula brevis were fed on prey species with distinctly different fatty acid and stable isotope profiles over 30 consecutive days. One group of squid were fed fish for fifteen days, followed by crustaceans for a further fifteen days. A second and third group were fed exclusively on fish or crustaceans for thirty days. And a fourth group was fed on a mixture of fish and crustaceans for thirty days. Analysis of squid tissue showed that, after 10 days of feeding, fatty acid profiles of squid tended to reflect those of their prey. Squid that fed on a single prey type, i.e. fish or crustacean, showed only minor modifications in fatty acid proportions after the initial change and fatty acid profiles were clearly distinguishable between the two feeding groups. Shifts in fatty acid proportions towards respective prey profiles could clearly be observed in squid the diet of which was swapped after 15 days. Clear differences could also be seen in fatty acid profiles of squid feeding on a mixed diet with trends towards either fish or crustacean fatty acid signatures. Stable isotope signatures of squid tissues clearly distinguished between animals feeding on different diets and supported findings from fatty acid analysis, thus indicating both methods to be viable tools in feeding studies on squid species.  相似文献

Aspects of the feeding biology of three species of cormorant ( Phalacrocorax melanoleucos , P. sulcirostris and P. varius ) were investigated in the large Peel-Harvey Estuary in south-western Australia in April and October 1986 and January 1987. The duration of dives by each species increased with depth and at each depth was greater in P. varius than in the two smaller species. Differences in the ranges of depths in which the similarly sized P. melanoleucos and P. sulcirostris fed would have reduced any potential interspecific competition for feeding space and food. The dive-rest ratio was similar (2.6–2.8) in all three species. Comparisons between the diet of each cormorant species and the potential prey where foraging occurred demonstrated that all three cormorant species were opportunistic feeders, ingesting predominantly small, slow-swimming, benthic-feeding fish and crustaceans. The small size of the prey was limited by the small dimensions of the gullet. There was no evidence that any of the three cormorant species were likely to exert a pronounced adverse effect on the abundance of the major commercial fish in the estuary or on the food of these teleosts.  相似文献

The food and feeding habits of Goldeneye Bucephala clangula are described, based on the analyses of 51 stomach contents and a brief review of the literature. The type of food taken depends on the type of habitat being used, the availability and size of the food items and on the methods of feeding—though animal material largely predominates.
In estuarine and coastal areas, small crustaceans and in particular Carcinus maenas figured highly in the diet, with some molluscs and small fish. In two brackish-water feeding birds, seeds formed the bulk of the food, some caddis-fly larvae also being taken. In freshwater feeding birds insects predominated, particularly Trichoptera larvae, chironomid larvae and the adults of Corixa spp. Some crustaceans ( Asellus, Gammarus ) and small molluscs were taken and occasionally small fish. A small amount of plant material was taken in the form of seeds, mainly Potamogeton spp.
The relation between Goldeneye and fishing interests is briefly discussed and it is concluded that fish normally form a small part of the diet and it is unlikely that any serious depredation of fish stocks is common.  相似文献

Studies on the food and feeding habits of Eutropius niloticus in Lake Kainji, Nigeria revealed that the fish is omnivorous but fed more on insects than on any other food. The most important insects were Povilla adusta Navas nymphs and imagos and adults of the common grasshoppers. Fish, particularly the clupeids Sierrathrissa leonensis Thys Van den Audernaerde and Pellonula afzeliusi Johnels, also formed an important part of the diet. There was seasonal variation of organisms selected for food and there were variations in the dietary items selected by different age groups. Accumulation of fat was found to correlate with seasonal feeding intensity. E. niloticus serves as food for other fishes.  相似文献

Food resource partitioning between similar‐sized, sympatric Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis was examined as a possible mechanism enabling their coexistence in a stream (Allaire) of the Sainte‐Marguerite River ecosystem, Quebec, Canada. Fish stomach contents and invertebrate drift were collected concurrently during three diel cycles in August to September 1996. The food and feeding habits of an allopatric brook trout population in a nearby stream (Epinette) were studied for comparison. The diel feeding rhythms of the two coexisting fish species were similar. The composition of their diet, however, showed significant differences. Atlantic salmon predominantly (60–90%) fed on aquatic insects, mainly Ephemeroptera (35–60% of the diet). The brook trout mostly (50–80%) fed upon the allochthonous terrestrial insects (mainly adults of Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera) which comprised 5–40% of the stream drift. The allopatric brook trout fed opportunistically on the more abundant aquatic insects and terrestrial insects rarely formed 25% of its diet. The allopatric trout fed nearly twice as much as the sympatric brook trout during a day. The results suggest that the differences in feeding by brook trout in the two streams (with and without Atlantic salmon) are the result of inter‐specific interaction with Atlantic salmon and are not related to the differences in food availability between the two streams. Food resource partitioning between Atlantic salmon and brook trout may be viewed as an adaptive response resulting in a greater exploitation of available resources and coexistence.  相似文献

Food of anadromous brown trout at sea   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The food of migratory Salmo trutta in coastal marine waters along the Norwegian Skagerrak coast varied significantly with age, season and habitat of the fish. The main prey categories in terms of frequency of occurrence were fishes followed by crustaceans, surface insects and polychaetes. Seasonal variation in diet and within habitats was found, supporting the view that brown trout is an opportunistic feeder. An ontogenetic niche shift was observed with post-smolts feeding on inshore and shallow water prey communities, while larger brown trout fed mainly on pelagic fishes.  相似文献

In this paper we describe the feeding habits of the Red snapper (Lutjanus peru) in the southern coast of Guerrero state, Mexico. This data could be relevant to local fisheries management. In total 385 full stomachs (206 from females and 179 from males) were collected monthly in 1993 and 1994, from commercial catches. Stomach contents were identified to species level when possible. Food items were grouped into taxonomically coherent groups, and their numbers, weight and frequency of occurrence obtained. The index of relative importance (IRI) was calculated for the total sample, by month, sex and size class. In 1993, a total of 42 different food items were obtained, and 43 in 1994. Food items consisted of fishes, crustaceans, and mollusks. The grouping of prey species, genera, or families rendered 14 food groups, as follows: Mollusks, Amphipods, Copepods, Stomatopods, Penaeus vannamei, Brachiuran Larvae, Stomatopods Larvae, Family Albuneidae Larvae, Other crustaceans, Anchoa ischana, Anchoa lucida, Other fishes, Salps and Unidentified organic matter. Anchoa ischana dominated the trophic spectrum in both years. Although, Amphipods, Anchoa lucida and Other fishes had important indexes in 1994. There was high variability in the diet composition by month. Nevertheless, in 1993, from February to August, crustaceans as a whole dominated the diet. In 1994, crustaceans only dominated in March and August. No differences in food habits were found between immature fish, males and females. The diet of the Red snapper varies as they grow, although the same food groups are found always. At the adult phase, in length classes over 261 mm FL, there is some degree of specialization, as they consume more fish, particularly engraulids.  相似文献

Ontogenetic shifts from insect consumption by juveniles to plant consumption by adults are rare in the herbivorous lizard family Iguanidae. My investigations on diet and digestive tract anatomy of the iguanid lizard Ctenosaura pectinata show that this species has an ontogenetic diet shift. Insects were rare in adult diets but constituted 86.5% (by volume) of the food eaten by the smallest juveniles. All age classes ate some plant parts from a range of plant types, but flowers and leaves of legumes were a primarily food source. Non-adult lizards had the widest food niche breadths. Arthropods in the diet of juveniles and immatures covaried seasonally with the decline of arthropod abundance. Several hypotheses could explain this ontogenetic plasticity in diet. I rejected hypotheses that gut structure constrained juveniles to an arthropod diet and that insect consumption was purely an artifact of plant consumption because (1) size-adjusted gut morphology and capacity was similar among age classes, and (2) no food plants sampled had an excessive density of arthropods. I supported an alternative hypothesis that juveniles can eat plants but do not because insects provide a more nutritious diet. This conclusion was based on the observation that the juvenile hindgut is similar to that of herbivorous adults, and the propensity for juveniles to consume primarily, but not exclusively, insects when they were most abundant. The hindgut represents the site of fermentative plant fiber breakdown in many herbivorous lizards. Insect foods can compensate for size-related nutritional needs (energy and protein) and digestive limitations in juveniles. Opportunistic feeding to maintain a broad diet might help juvenile and immature lizards through high-predation-risk growth periods by reducing searching costs, increasing nutritional and energetic gains due to associative effects, and increasing new food exposure.
