Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trans-trihydroxystibene) is a natural phytoalexin present in grapes and red wine, which possesses a variety of biological activities including antioxidative activity. To find more active antioxidants, with resveratrol as the lead compound, we synthesized resveratrol analogues, i.e., 3,4,3',4'-tetrahydroxy-trans-stilbene (3,4,3',4'-THS), 3,4,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene (3,4,4'-THS), 2,4,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene (2,4,4'-THS), 3,3'-dimethoxy-4,4'-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (3,3'-DM-4,4'-DHS), 3,4-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (3,4-DHS), 4,4'-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (4,4'-DHS), 3,5-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (3,5-DHS) and 2,4-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (2,4-DHS). Antioxidative effects of resveratrol and its analogues against free-radical-induced peroxidation of human low density lipoprotein (LDL) were studied. The peroxidation was initiated either by a water-soluble initiator 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane hydrochloride) (AAPH), or by cupric ion (Cu(2+)). The reaction kinetics were monitored either by the uptake of oxygen and the depletion of alpha-tocopherol (TOH) presented in the native LDL, or by the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Kinetic analysis of the antioxidation process demonstrates that these trans-stilbene derivatives are effective antioxidants against both AAPH- and Cu(2+)-induced LDL peroxidation with the activity sequence of 3,4,3',4'-THS approximately 3,3'-DM-4,4'-DHS>3,4-DHS approximately 3,4,4'-THS>2,4,4'-THS>resveratrol approximately 3,5-DHS>4,4'-DHS approximately 2,4-HS, and 3,4,3',4'-THS approximately 3,4-DHS approximately 3,4,4'-THS>3,3'-DM-4,4'-DHS>4,4'-DHS>resveratrol approximately 2,4-HS>2,4,4'-THS approximately 3,5-DHS, respectively. Molecules bearing ortho-dihydroxyl or 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyl groups possess significantly higher antioxidant activity than those bearing no such functionalities.  相似文献

While degrading 2,4-dichlorophenol, two strains of Gloeophyllum striatum, a basidiomycetous fungus causing brown rot decay of wood, simultaneously produced 4-chlorocatechol and 3,5-dichlorocatechol. These metabolites were identified by comparing high-performance liquid chromatography retention times and mass spectral data with those of chemically synthesized standards. Under similar conditions, 3-hydroxyphthalic hydrazide was generated from phthalic hydrazide, a reaction assumed to indicate hydroxyl radical formation. Accordingly, during chemical degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol by Fenton's reagent, identical metabolites were formed. Both activities, the conversion of 2,4-[U-(14)C]dichlorophenol into (14)CO(2) and the generation of 3-hydroxyphthalic hydrazide, were strongly inhibited by the hydroxyl radical scavenger mannitol and in the absence of iron. These results provide new evidence in favor of a Fenton-type degradation mechanism operative in Gloeophyllum.  相似文献

The conversion of the calciferols to isotachysterols using trifluoroacetic acid is described. The yield of isotachysterol formed is greater by about 10% than that obtained with either antimony trichloride or acetyl chloride. Trifluoroacetic acid also produces a more intense absorption at 500 nm with calciferols than does antimony trichloride, however, the color is less stable.  相似文献

The color of vertebrate-dispersed fruits has been a source of inquiry for over 150 years, yet the ecological and evolutionary processes responsible for fruit color diversity remain elusive. We tested the hypothesis that fruit color varies temporally, to maximize conspicuousness against seasonal changes in foliage coloration, in a bird-dispersed plant community in western North America. Field observations showed that while red fruits predominate during summer periods of green foliage coloration, black fruits are produced during flushes of red-orange foliage coloration in autumn. Although two species did not conform to this pattern, one produced its own contrasting background color, via colored bracts. We conducted experimental manipulations of both fruit color and the color of artificial backgrounds to test whether both factors had a synergistic effect on fruit removal rates. Interactions between fruit and background color explained most of the variation in experimental fruit removal rates. Although red fruits were removed rapidly on green backgrounds, preference for black fruits on red-orange backgrounds was less pronounced. Consequently, the temporal pattern in fruit color appears to result from elevated fruit conspicuousness against seasonal changes in foliage coloration. Support for this hypothesis suggests a temporal connection between fruit color diversity, foliage color contrasts and avian color preferences.  相似文献

2,2'-p-Phenylene bis[6-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)]benzimidazole, 2,2'-bis(3,5-dihydroxyphenyl)-6,6'-bis benzimidazole, and 2,2'-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-6,6'-bis benzimidazole are shown by UV-visible and fluorescence spectrophotometry to be strong ligands for tRNA, giving simple, hyperbolic binding isotherms with apparent dissociation constants in the micromolar range. Hydroxyl radical footprinting indicates that they may bind in the D and T loops. On the basis of this tRNA recognition as a rationale, they were tested as inhibitors of the processing of precursor tRNAs by the RNA subunit of Escherichia coli RNase P (M1 RNA). Preliminary studies show that inhibition of the processing of Drosophila tRNA precursor molecules by phosphodiester bond cleavage, releasing the extraneous 5'-portion of RNA and the mature tRNA molecule, was dependent on both the structure of the inhibitor and the structure of the particular tRNA precursor substrate for tRNA(Ala), tRNA(Val), and tRNA(His). In more detailed followup using the tRNA(His) precursor as the substrate, experiments to determine the concentration dependence of the reaction showed that inhibition took time to reach its maximum extent. I(50) values (concentrations for 50% inhibition) were between 5.3 and 20.8 microM, making these compounds among the strongest known inhibitors of this ribozyme, and the first inhibitors of it not based on natural products. These compounds effect their inhibition by binding to the substrate of the enzyme reaction, making them examples of an unusual class of enzyme inhibitors. They provide novel, small-molecule, inhibitor frameworks for this endoribonuclease ribozyme.  相似文献

Two isomeric dimeric steroids, 3,3'-bis(methyl 3-hydroxyandrost-4-en-17-on-19-oate-3-yl), with symmetrical (alpha, alpha') and unsymmetrical structures (alpha,beta'), have been obtained by reduction of methyl androst-4-ene-3,17-dion-19-oate with zinc in aqueous acetic acid together with the major products, the isomeric methyl 5alpha- and 5beta-androst-3-en-17-on-19-oates. The structures of the dimers and unsaturated products are supported by spectroscopic methods. The symmetrical dimer was also obtained from treatment of the 4-en-3-on-19-oate ester with lithium in ammonia.  相似文献

Although many primates exhibit striking coloration, including brightly colored pelage and bare areas of skin, our understanding of the function and evolution of these traits pales in the face of knowledge about color in other taxa. However, recent years have seen an increase in the number of studies of individual variation in primate color and evidence is accumulating that these traits can act as important signals to conspecifics. Mandrills are arguably the most colorful of all primates. Here, we review what we have discovered about the signal function of coloration in male and female mandrills from our long-term studies of a semi-free-ranging colony in Franceville, Gabon and test the predictions of the Hamilton-Zuk hypothesis—that bright coloration is condition dependent, and that only individuals of superior quality will be able to express color fully—in this species. We compare measures of facial coloration in both sexes with parasite load (using fecal analysis over 1 annual cycle), immune status (hematological parameters), neutral genetic diversity (microsatellite heterozygosity), and major histocompatability (MHC) genotype to examine whether red coloration acts as an honest signal of individual quality in mandrills. We found that red coloration was unrelated to parasitism and hematological parameters. Red was also unrelated to genome-wide heterozygosity and MHC diversity, although specific MHC genotypes were significantly related to red. The healthy, provisioned nature of the colony and problems associated with observational, correlational studies restrict interpretation of our data, and it would be premature to draw conclusions as to whether color signals individual quality in mandrills. We conclude with some suggestions for future studies on the signal content of color in mandrills and other primates.  相似文献

Relationships between bright secondary sexual coloration and behavior were studied in female Holbrookia propinqua, which develop striking orange and yellow colors during the breeding season. In tethered introduction studies, brightly colored females performed aggressive courtship rejection behaviors toward conspecific males; plainly colored females were not aggressive toward males, but attempted to avoid them. Responses of females of the two color patterns toward conspecific females of both color phases were not detectably different. Experimental introductions of lizards with coloration modified by paint showed that females of both color patterns recognize any other lizard bearing the bright female colors as female, regardless of actual sex. Both the orange and yellow components were shown to contribute to sex recognition. The yellow component alone allowed accurate sex identification, but only half the females responded to males painted with only the orange female component as if they were females. Because females did not behave differently toward other females on the basis of coloration, the hypothesis that bright coloration evolved as an adaptive signal between females is rejected. The dark ventrolateral stripes of male and plainly colored females did not appear to affect intraspecific social responses by females.  相似文献

Female Japanese macaques are seasonal breeders distinguished by their red-colored hindquarters, face, and nipple skin areas. Intensity of coloration seems to be associated with sexual attractiveness, behavior, and fluctuating sex steroids. Our aim was to investigate whether the color intensity of these regions differed between lactating (LA) and non-lactating (NLA) females during sexually inactive (SI) and active (SA) phases. Coloration scores of 19 adult females were classified using color tables. Estrogen and progesterone metabolites were determined in fecal samples. Weekly comparison between both groups revealed significantly increased coloration of the hindquarters area from week 13 (SI) until the end of the observation period, and for the nipple skin throughout the SI and SA periods. Face coloration differed marginally. Hormonally, NLA females showed significantly increased excretion rates of sex steroids at the end of the SI phase and throughout the whole SA period. Logistic regression analyses between elevated fecal steroids and nipple coloration disclosed a significant relationship for NLA females during the SI period. This connection persisted and included hindquarter coloration during the SA period. NLA females showed increased intromission with ejaculation, but no difference was found for intromission without ejaculation. In conclusion, results demonstrate increased endocrine excretion rates for NLA females during the whole observation period, paralleled by an enhanced, fertility-signaling sexual attractiveness.  相似文献

Animal coloration is strikingly diverse in nature. Within‐species color variation can arise through local adaptation for camouflage, sexual dimorphism and conspicuous sexual signals, which often have conflicting effects on survival. Here, we tested whether color variation between two island populations of Aegean wall lizards (Podarcis erhardii) is due to sexual dimorphism and differential survival of individuals varying in appearance. On both islands, we measured attack rates by wild avian predators on clay models matching the coloration of real male and female P. erhardii from each island population, modeled to avian predator vision. Avian predator attack rates differed among model treatments, although only on one island. Male‐colored models, which were more conspicuous against their experimental backgrounds to avian predators, were accordingly detected and attacked more frequently by birds than less conspicuous female‐colored models. This suggests that female coloration has evolved primarily under selection for camouflage, whereas sexually competing males exhibit costly conspicuous coloration. Unexpectedly, there was no difference in avian attack frequency between local and non‐local model types. This may have arisen if the models did not resemble lizard coloration with sufficient precision, or if real lizards behaviorally choose backgrounds that improve camouflage. Overall, these results show that sexually dimorphic coloration can affect the risk of predator attacks, indicating that color variation within a species can be caused by interactions between natural and sexual selection. However, more work is needed to determine how these findings depend on the island environment that each population inhabits.  相似文献

Structural coloration has been hypothesized to play a role insexual selection, and we tested whether this was the case ina field study of the barn swallow Hirundo rustica. The dorsaliridescent plumage of barn swallows has a strong reflectancein the ultraviolet (UV) region, with adult males on averagereflecting 8-9% more than adult females, as revealed by a 2-yearstudy in southwestern Spain. The correlation between structural coloration (described by the reflectance in the UV part of thespectrum, UV chroma and blue chroma) and three other secondarysexual characters significantly associated with male matingsuccess (tail length, tail asymmetry, and red facial coloration)was weak and generally nonsignificant. Nor was there a significantrelationship between color parameters and body condition. Wetested for an association between structural coloration of the dorsal plumage and sexual selection in a number of independenttests. Arrival date of males was not significantly relatedto color; there was no significant relationship between colorationand probability of survival or age; mated males did not havestronger reflectance than unmated males; and the duration ofthe premating period was not significantly related to color.Reproductive success was not significantly correlated withplumage coloration in males, nor was the feeding rate of offspringby brightly colored males higher than that of males with lessbright plumage. Given that sample sizes were large, and the power of statistical tests high, we conclude that current sexualselection on the coloration of the dorsal plumage in the barnswallow is, at best, weak.  相似文献

A highly sensitive method has been developed for the determination of gamma-cystathionase (EC. 4.4.1.1.) activity in rat tissues using beta-chloro-L-alanine as a substrate. This method is based on colorimetry for the determination of pyruvate produced from beta-chloro-L-alanine with the beta-elimination catalyzed by gamma-cystathionase, coupling a color enzymatic reaction with pyruvate oxidase and peroxidase. The absorbance increases with the oxidized color of a leuco dye, N-(carboxymethylamino)-4,4'-bis (dimethylamino)-diphenylamine at 727 nm is proportional to the gamma-cystathionase activity. The present method is more sensitive and more rapid than the usual methods and does not require troublesome steps such as centrifugation. The calibration curve is linear up to 1.6 microg of partially purified enzyme (100 U/l). Comparison with the usual method with L-homoserine as a substrate gave good correlation (r=0.990). The present method was applied to the determination of gamma-cystathionase activity in adult male rat tissues. The mean activities in liver and kidney were 8.03 and 3.91 U/g wet weight (n=10), respectively.  相似文献

Turtles are among the most intriguing amniotes but their communication and signaling have rarely been studied. Traditionally, they have been seen as basically just silent armored ‘walking stones’ with complex physiology but no altruism, maternal care, or aesthetic perception. Recently, however, we have witnessed a radical change in the perception of turtle behavioral and cognitive skills. In our study, we start by reviewing some recent findings pertaining to various highly developed behavioral and cognitive patterns with special emphasis on turtles. Then we focus on freshwater turtles and use data about their sexual behavior and size sexual dimorphism (SSD) to test whether conspicuous coloration of the head is in these animals related to sexual processes. We found that absence of aggressive mating behavior is statistically associated with the presence of conspicuous coloration on turtles’ heads. It also seems that while species with female-biased SSD are characterised by conspicuously colored head ornaments, in species with male-biased SSD conspicuous coloration is absent. Unlike large females, males thus seem to be under pressure to develop conspicuous coloration and engage in non-aggressive behavior using signaling to succeed in courtship. And finally, we discuss possible roles of head color patterns in turtle communication during mating.  相似文献

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide anion, hydroxyl ((*)OH), peroxyl, and alkoxyl radicals may attack biological macromolecules giving rise to oxidative stress-originated diseases. Since (*)OH is very short-lived, secondary products resulting from (*)OH attack to various probes are measured. Although the measurement of aromatic hydroxylation with HPLC/electrochemical detection is more specific than the low-yield TBARS test, it requires sophisticated instrumentation. As a more convenient and less costly alternative, we used p-aminobenzoate, 2,4- and 3,5-dimethoxybenzoate probes for detecting hydroxyl radicals generated from an equivalent mixture of Fe(II)+EDTA with hydrogen peroxide. The produced hydroxyl radicals attacked both the probe and the water-soluble antioxidants in 37 degrees C-incubated solutions for 2h. The CUPRAC (i.e., our original method for total antioxidant capacity assay) absorbance of the ethylacetate extract due to the reduction of Cu(II)-neocuproine reagent by the hydroxylated probe decreased in the presence of (*)OH scavengers, the difference being proportional to the scavenging ability of the tested compound. A rate constant for the reaction of the scavenger with hydroxyl radical can be deduced from the inhibition of color formation. The second-order rate constants of the scavengers were determined with competition kinetics by means of a linear plot of A(0)/A as a function of C(scavenger)/C(probe), where A(0) and A are the CUPRAC absorbances of the system in the absence and presence of scavenger, respectively, and C is the molar concentration of relevant species. The 2,4- and 3,5-dimethoxybenzoates were the best probes in terms of linearity and sensitivity. Iodide, metabisulfite, hexacyanoferrate(II), thiourea, formate, and dimethyl sulfoxide were shown by the modified CUPRAC assay to be more effective scavengers than mannitol, glucose, lysine, and simple alcohols, as in the TBARS assay. The developed method is less lengthy, more specific, and of a higher yield than the classical TBARS assay. The hydroxyl radical scavenging rate constants of ascorbic acid, formate, and hexacyanoferrate(II) that caused interference in other assays could be easily found with the proposed procedure.  相似文献

Although secondary sexual adornments are widespread in male primates, few studies have examined female choice for these characters. Mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) present an extreme example of sexual dimorphism, with males exhibiting an array of striking adornments. The most dominant adult male in a group exhibits the brightest and most extensive red coloration, while the other males are less brightly colored. I examined whether female mandrills prefer brightly colored males using data on periovulatory sexual behavior during the 1996 mating season for all males 8 years old (n = 5) and all parous females (n = 9) in a semifree-ranging colony at CIRMF, Gabon. Brightness of male coloration is significantly positively correlated with time spent within 2 m of females, female responsibility for proximity, number of sexual presentations received, % approaches accepted by females, and % inspections with which females cooperated. Females also groomed only the brightest male. Behaviors indicating female preference are not correlated significantly with male dominance rank, and partial correlations confirm that the influence of male color on female behavior is stronger than that of male rank. With the influence of male dominance rank controlled, correlation coefficients between female behaviors and male mating success are high and positive. In further support of the hypothesis that females show mate choice for brightly colored males, independent of dominance rank, I report an unusual case wherein the alpha male fell in rank without loss of coloration. He experienced no significant change in female responsibility for proximity, sexual presentations received, or female reaction to approaches or inspections, though he was no longer observed to mate. Accordingly, female mandrills attend to differences in male secondary sexual characters and favor brightly colored males. As brightly colored males are also dominant this reinforces the influence of male-male competition on male reproductive success and may explain the very high reproductive skew in mandrill males and their extraordinary appearance.  相似文献

Quantum-chemical calculations using DFT, have been performed to explain the molecular structure antioxidant activity relationship of resveratrol (RSV) (1) analogues: 3,4-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (3,4-DHS) (2); 4,4′-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (4,4′-DHS) (3); 4-hydroxy-trans-stilbene (4-HS) (4); 3,5-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (3,5-DHS) (5); 3,3′-dimethoxy-4,4′-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (3,3′-DM-4,4′-DHS) (6); 2,4-dihydroxy-trans-stilbene (2,4-DHS) (7) and 2,4,4′-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene (2,4,4′-THS) (8). It was found that all compounds studied were effective antioxidants with the exception of 3, 5-DHS. The high antioxidant activity of both 3, 3′-DM-4, 4′-DHS and 3, 4-DHS may be due to the abstraction of the two hydrogen atoms of the para and ortho-position hydroxyls respectively, to form a quinone structure. Our results revealed that the antioxidant pharmacophore of 2,4-DHS and 2,4,4′-THS, exhibiting higher antioxidant activity than resveratrol, is the 2-hydroxystilbene, rather than 4-hydroxystilbene. Experimental observations were satisfactorily explained and commented.  相似文献

Protective coloration is a well-known predator avoidance strategy in prey species. Aposematic species often display a contrasting color pattern consisting of dark spots of different shapes and sizes on a bright background coloration. Both elements, background color and spots are expected to serve different purposes. While the ecological function of the bright coloration has been addressed in many studies, the question of whether the interaction with differently sized spots influences predator behavior has received less attention by researchers. In a lowland rain forest in Costa Rica we used 2700 clay models that imitated the polytypic strawberry poison frog (Oophaga pumilio) as a proxy for an aposematic prey species. We manipulated the dorsal color pattern by using a local and a non-local aposematic and a non-local cryptic background color and combined them with black spots increasing in size (none, small, medium, large). The major objective was to test if spot size alters the survival rate of differently colored models. Background coloration and spot size were significant predictors of being attacked. However, the interaction between both effects was not. During five trials predators avoided the non-local aposematic color morph and did not discriminate between local aposematic and non-local cryptic models. Spot size and attack rate were negatively linear correlated which suggests that predator selection promotes the evolution of dark spots. We further conclude that spot size matters in a contrasting color pattern and plays an important role in predator avoidance.  相似文献

The products of phenol oxidation catalyzed by mushroom tyrosinase (polyphenol oxidase, EC 1.14.18.1) were assessed in terms of their residual color and toxicity. The addition of aluminum sulfate had little effect on the removal of colored products from phenol solutions treated with tyrosinase. Although chitosan was used successfully to remove the color when added before the reaction initiation or after the reaction completion, the required dose of chitosan was lower when it was added after the reaction. In this case, the minimum doses of chitosan required to achieve 90% color removal were proportional to the logarithm of the initial concentration of phenol. The color removal induced by chitosan addition appeared to be the result of chemical interaction followed by a coagulation mechanism. All treated solutions of phenol and chlorophenols, except 2,4-dichlorophenol, had substantially lower toxicities than their corresponding initial toxicities, as measured using the Microtox assay. Chitosan addition significantly enhanced the reduction in toxicity. The toxicities of the phenol solutions treated with tyrosinase were markedly lower than previously reported toxicities of solutions treated with peroxidase enzymes.  相似文献

Male magnificent frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens) possess a seasonally expressed skin ornament, namely the red and inflatable gular pouch, and are, therefore, a convenient model for the study of some theories related to the evolution of possible testosterone-dependent sexual skin coloration. Here we report the findings of a study performed over four consecutive mating seasons in the Mexican national park Isla Isabel. We investigated differences in testosterone level and gular pouch coloration in courting males in relation to the categories: age-class, visited status and blood parasite infection. Gular pouch color saturation increased with age-class. Investigated frigatebirds were infected only with Haemoproteus iwa (Haemosporida, Haemoproteidae), with an overall prevalence infection of 15.5%. Prevalence of the infection increased with birds' age-class. Testosterone levels were significantly higher in infected males, who also had lighter colored gular pouches. In non-infected males, those visited by a female had higher testosterone levels than non-visited males. Gular pouch lightness and redness were negatively correlated but only redness in non-visited non-infected males was positively correlated with testosterone levels. Gular pouch saturation in visited and infected males was positively correlated with body mass, which also increased with age-class. Mated males had lower testosterone levels and lighter, less red and saturated gular pouch coloration than courting males. In summary, we found that coloration of the male skin ornament could reflect age-class (saturation), parasite infection (lightness) and mated status (all), together with indications of condition and testosterone dependency of ornament expression.  相似文献
