This study examined feed intake, growth, body condition, muscle glycogen content and nutrition-related health in 16 Standardbred horses fed a high-energy, forage-only diet ad libitum and allocated to either a control training programme (C-group) or a training programme with the high-intensity training distance reduced by 30% (R-group), from January as 2-year olds until December as 3-year olds. Feed intake was recorded on 10 occasions during 3 consecutive days. Body weight was recorded once in a week and height, body condition score (BCS), rump fat thickness and thickness of the m. longissimus dorsi were measured at 7±3-week intervals throughout the study. Muscle biopsies of the m. gluteus medius were taken in December as 2-year olds and in November as 3-year olds and analysed for glycogen content. Nutrition-related health disorders were noted when they occurred. Horses consumed 1.7% to 2.6% dry matter of BW, corresponding to 19 to 28 MJ metabolisable energy/100 kg BW. There were no differences between training groups in feed intake or any of the body measurements. The pooled weekly BCS was maintained between 4.8 and 5.1 (root mean square error (RMSE)=0.4). Muscle glycogen content was 587 and 623 mmol/kg dry weight (RMSE=68) as 2- and 3-year olds, respectively, and there was no difference between training groups. When managed under normal conditions, no nutrition-related health disorders or stereotypic behaviours were observed. It was concluded that the training programme did not affect feed intake, growth, BCS or muscle glycogen content. In addition, the forage-only diet did not appear to prohibit muscle glycogen storage, growth or maintenance of body condition, and seemed to promote good nutrition-related health.  相似文献

Life history theory predicts a trade‐off between immunostimulation and growth. Using a cross‐sectional study design, this study aims to test the hypothesis that C‐reactive protein (CRP) is negatively associated with height‐for‐age z‐scores (HAZ scores) and BMI‐for‐age z‐scores (BAZ scores) among 6‐ to 19‐year olds (N = 426) residing in five Nepalese communities. Dried blood spot (DBS) samples were collected and assayed for CRP using an in‐house enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Sex‐ and age‐group‐specific CRP quartiles were used to examine its association with growth in linear mixed‐effects (LME) models. A significant difference was found in the proportion of elevated CRP (>2 mg/L, equivalent to ~3.2 mg/L serum CRP) between 13‐ and 19‐year‐old boys (12%) and girls (4%). Concentrations of CRP were positively associated with HAZ score among adolescent (13–19 years) boys, which may indicate that individuals with greater energy resources have better growth and a better response to infections, thus eliminating the expected trade‐off between body maintenance (immunostimulation) and growth. Adolescent boys with low BAZ and HAZ scores had low CRP values, suggesting that those who do not have enough energy for growth cannot increase their CRP level even when infected with pathogens. Among adolescent girls a positive association was observed between CRP and BAZ scores suggesting the possible effects of chronic low‐grade inflammation due to body fat rather than infection. The association between CRP and growth was less evident among children (6–12 years) compared with adolescents, indicating that the elevated energy requirement needed for the adolescent growth spurt and puberty may play some role. Decelerating and sex-dependent tooth wear in Norwegian red deer   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
In ungulates, tooth wear is often suggested as a proximate cause of senescence. Tooth wear is expected to be sex-dependent since energetic requirements and food selection varies largely between sexes in sexually dimorphic ungulates. Furthermore, tooth wear may lower mastication efficiency, and we predict a negative correlation between tooth wear and body weight or condition. We tested these predictions on data on tooth wear (estimated as height of first molar) of 1,311 male and 1,348 female red deer ( Cervus elaphus) aged 3-25 years and harvested along the west coast of Norway. The rate of tooth wear decreased with age. Males wear teeth at a higher rate (from 0.61 mm/year in 4-year olds to 0.45 mm/year in 11-year olds) than females (from 0.52 mm/year in 4-year olds to 0.39 mm/year in 11-year olds). Molar height correlated positively with body weight in both sexes, but not after adjusting for body size. Molar height was strongly dependent on body size in 3-year-old individuals (when tooth wear is minimal). Earlier reports in the literature of a positive correlation between tooth height and body weight may therefore be due to initial size differences rather than differences in condition due to tooth wear.  相似文献

In Chile, childhood obesity rates are high. The purpose of this article is to compare BMI growth characteristics of normal (N), overweight (OW), and obese (OB) 5‐year olds from 0 to 5 years and explore the influence of some prenatal factors on these patterns of growth. The study was done on a retrospective cohort of 1,089 5‐year olds with birth weight >2,500 g. Weight and height were obtained from records at nine occasions (0–36 months); at 52 and 60 months, we measured them. At 60 months, children were classified as N, OW, and OB. At each age, BMI and z‐score of BMI (BMI Z) differences were compared among groups. The influence of birth weight, pre‐pregnancy BMI, and prenatal variables (weight gain, smoking, and presence of diabetes and preeclampsia) on BMI Z differences between N and OB was also explored. Adiposity rebound (AR) was not observed for the N, although for the OW, it occurred ~52 months and for the OB at ~24 months. BMI Z differences between N and OB were significant from birth, but were greatest between 6–12 and 36–52 months. Additional adjustment by birth weight, pre‐pregnancy BMI, and prenatal variables decreased the BMI Z differences for the first 24 months with virtually no effect after this age. Accelerated growth in OB children from post‐transition countries occurs immediately after birth, much earlier than the AR. The influence of prenatal factors on adiposity acquisition may extend at most until 2 years of life, although BMI gains thereafter are more related to postnatal variables.  相似文献

Acute coronary syndromes are characterized by the expression of proinflammatory cytokines such as C-reactive protein (CRP). Sustained upregulation of inflammatory markers is associated with an adverse prognosis. Vitamin E is known to have significant anti-inflammatory properties and has been associated with a reduction in cardiovascular events in some studies of high-risk patients. The mechanism of benefit remains controversial. We conducted a randomized, double-blind placebo controlled trial of vitamin E 400 IU daily for 6 months in 110 patients with acute coronary syndromes. Serum samples were collected at enrollment and at 2, 4, and 6 months. CRP, interleukin-6 and the soluble cell adhesion molecules were measured. Vitamin E levels increased significantly in the treatment group (from 31 micromol/l at baseline to 51 micromol/l, p <.0001) and were unchanged in the placebo group (32 micromol/l at baseline to 34 micromol/l, p = NS). CRP levels fell in both the vitamin E group and the placebo group over the treatment period (from 17.2 +/- 2.9 to 6.1 +/- 0.8 mg/l and from 21.5 +/- 4.9 to 5.9 +/- 0.9 mg/l, p = NS for the difference between active and placebo groups). However, vitamin E treatment was associated with significantly lower 6 month CRP levels in smokers versus smokers on placebo (4.7 +/- 0.71 mg/l vs. 8.26 +/- 1.5 mg/l, p =.02). Vitamin E reduces CRP levels in smokers with acute coronary syndromes for up to 6 months after hospitalization.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to investigate potential age-related differences in neural regulation strategies during maximal and sub-maximal hopping. Thirty-two boys from three different age groups (9-, 12- and 15-years), completed trials of both maximal and sub maximal hopping, and based on contact and flight times, measures of reactive strength index (RSI = jump height/contact time) and leg stiffness (peak ground reaction force/peak displacement of centre of mass) were collected respectively. During all trials, surface electromyograms (EMG) were recorded from four different muscle sites of the dominant lower limb, during 100 ms pre-ground contact, and then four subsequent stretch reflex phases: background muscle activity (0-30 ms), short-latency stretch reflex (31-60 ms), intermediate15 latency stretch reflex 61-90 ms and long-latency stretch reflex (91-120 ms). Reactive strength index and leg stiffness were measured during the hopping trials. During maximal hopping, both 12- and 15-year olds produced significantly greater RSI (P < 0.02) than 9-year olds, with 15-year olds utilising significantly greater soleus muscle activity during the 100 ms prior to ground contact than the younger age groups (P < 0.01). During sub-maximal hopping, 15-year olds produced significantly greater absolute leg stiffness than both 12- and 9-year olds (P < 0.01), with 9-year olds producing significantly less soleus muscle activity during the 31-60 ms time phase. For all age groups, sub-maximal hopping was associated with significantly greater background muscle activity and short-latency stretch reflex activity in the soleus and vastus lateralis, when compared to maximal hopping (P < 0.001). Results suggest that as children mature, they become more reliant on supra-spinal feed forward input and short latency stretch reflexes to regulate greater levels of leg stiffness and RSI when hopping.  相似文献

Objective To examine factors in early life (up to age 5 years) that are associated with objectively measured physical activity in 11-12 year olds.Design Prospective cohort study.Setting Avon longitudinal study of parents and children, United Kingdom. Participants Children aged 11-12 years from the Avon longitudinal study of parents and children.Main outcome measure Physical activity levels in counts per minute (cpm) and minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity for seven days measured with a uniaxial actigraph accelerometer.Results Valid actigraph data, defined as at least three days of physical activity for at least 10 hours a day, were collected from 5451 children. Several factors were associated with physical activity at ages 11-12 years. Regression coefficients are compared with the baseline of “none” for categorical variables: maternal brisk walking during pregnancy (regression coefficient 5.0, 95% confidence interval −8.5 to 18.5; cpm for <1 h/wk and ≥2 h/wk of physical activity 17.7, 5.3 to 30.1), maternal swimming during pregnancy (21.5, 10.9 to 32.1 and cpm for <1 h/wk and ≥2 h/wk of physical activity 24.2, 7.8 to 40.7), parents’ physical activity when the child was aged 21 months (28.5, 15.2 to 41.8 and cpm of physical activity for either parent active and both parents active 33.5, 17.8 to 49.3), and parity assessed during pregnancy (2.9, −7.6 to 13.4 and cpm of physical activity for 1 and ≥2 parity 21.2, 7.1 to 35.3).Conclusions Few factors in early life predicted later physical activity in 11-12 year olds. Parents’ physical activity during pregnancy and early in the child’s life showed a modest association with physical activity of the child at age 11-12 years, suggesting that active parents tend to raise active children. Helping parents to increase their physical activity therefore may promote children’s activity.  相似文献

Impaired bone growth and mineralization, and osteonecrosis are significant and common long-term sequelae of chemotherapy for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Here we have evaluated the relationship between linear bone growth during chemotherapy for ALL and bone derived C-type Natriuretic Peptide (CNP). CNP is known to be critical to normal endochondral bone growth in both rodents and humans, and plasma concentration of the amino terminal pro CNP (NTproCNP) is strongly correlated with concurrent height velocity in children. Plasma NTproCNP and CNP were measured by radio-immunoassay in 12 children aged 2-9 years during induction and maintenance chemotherapy for children with ALL. Height velocity was calculated from stadiometer readings at intervals of 3-12 months and related to plasma NTproCNP during each growth interval. Plasma NTproCNP was markedly suppressed in all subjects during induction chemotherapy. Brief periods of NTproCNP decline and rapid rebound during maintenance treatment coincided with the use of dexamethasone but not with other chemotherapeutics. Height velocity was markedly reduced during ALL induction but unaffected in maintenance phase, and these changes in growth were strongly correlated with plasma NTproCNP concentration. Plasma NTproCNP has potential use as a biomarker of glucocorticoid-induced bone toxicity.  相似文献

The underfeeding regimens tested in rodents for life span prolongation and/or immunologic effects result in a complex blend of protein and energy restriction while offering at least adequate amounts of all other essential nutrients. Underfeeding started at weaning and continued throughout life represents the only proved way of slowing the rate of aging in homeotherms. Mounting evidence indicates that underfeeding initiated later in life may also influence life span favorably. Old mice after lifelong restriction, or moderately aged mice (16.5 months) after 4.5 months of restriction, display "younger" immune systems than do age-matched, normally fed controls, as judged by response to mitogens, the mixed lymphocyte reaction, and other determinants. The immunologic effects of underfeeding, when measured quite early in life, are strain-dependent in the mouse. Diets designed to restrict the intake per week of energy (but not protein) produce the same effects on immune response capacity in very young mice as do energy restricted, protein unbalanced regimens. Underfeeding early in life drastically dampens thymic growth and alters the timing of involution. Early restriction also produces a profound lowering of body temperature in young (C57BL/10Sn x C3H/HeDiSn)F1 females. On the other hand, temperature lowering was not observed in males of this hybrid fed normally for the first year of life and restricted for 3 months prior to measurement. The mechanisms behind these various effects of controlled dietary restriction (i.e., undernutrition without malnutrition) are poorly understood at present.  相似文献

Chronic inflammation is a potentially important physiological mechanism linking early life environments and health in adulthood. Elevated concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP)—a key biomarker of inflammation—predict increased cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk in adulthood, but the developmental factors that shape the regulation of inflammation are not known. We investigated birth weight and breastfeeding duration in infancy as predictors of CRP in young adulthood in a large representative cohort study (n = 6951). Birth weight was significantly associated with CRP in young adulthood, with a negative association for birth weights 2.8 kg and higher. Compared with individuals not breastfed, CRP concentrations were 20.1%, 26.7%, 29.6% and 29.8% lower among individuals breastfed for less than three months, three to six months, 6–12 months and greater than 12 months, respectively. In sibling comparison models, higher birth weight was associated with lower CRP for birth weights above 2.5 kg, and breastfeeding greater than or equal to three months was significantly associated with lower CRP. Efforts to promote breastfeeding and improve birth outcomes may have clinically relevant effects on reducing chronic inflammation and lowering risk for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in adulthood.  相似文献

In order to develop the C-reactive protein (CRP) sensor chips for clinical detection of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, we used an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a dual polarization interferometric (DPI) biosensor to probe the surface ultrastructure and to measure the dimensions of CRP. A single pentagonal structure was directly visualized by AFM, and quantitative measurements of the dimensions of the protein were provided. The average height calculated for each pentagonal CRP particle was approximately 3.03+/-0.37 nm, which basically corresponds to that (36 A in protomer diameter) previously obtained from the structure of CRP determined by X-ray crystallography. Moreover, a experiment using dual polarization interferometric (DPI) as a biosensor was then performed, and the average monolayer thickness value (3.18+/-0.43 nm) that was calculated basically corresponds to that obtained from the experimental value (3.03+/-0.37 nm) of the height measured by an AFM method for CRP. Further investigations will be performed to study the surface ultrastructure of a single pentagonal CRP molecule, and for this purpose a CRP sample (at low concentration) was scanned in vacuum by AFM. The higher-resolution images clearly revealed the presence of doughnut-shaped CRP molecules. In addition, phase images of CRP molecules were captured simultaneously with their height images, and the lateral dimensions of the doughnut-shaped CRP molecules were then measured. It was found that the average values calculated for the outer diameter (11.13+/-1.47 nm) and pore diameter (3.52+/-0.42 nm) are respectively close to those (102 A in outer diameter and 30 A in pore diameter) previously obtained from the structure of CRP determined by X-ray crystallography. This study represents the first direct characterization of the surface ultrastructure and dimensional measurement of the CRP molecule on the sensor chip.  相似文献

Background

Asthma is a difficult diagnosis to establish in preschool children. A few years ago, our group presented a prediction rule for young children at risk for asthma in general practice. Before this prediction rule can safely be used in practice, cross-validation is required. In addition, general practitioners face many therapeutic management decisions in children at risk for asthma. The objectives of the study are: (1) identification of predictors for asthma in preschool children at risk for asthma with the aim of cross-validating an earlier derived prediction rule; (2) compare the effects of different treatment strategies in preschool children.

Design

In this prospective cohort study one to five year old children at risk of developing asthma were selected from general practices. At risk was defined as 'visited the general practitioner with recurrent coughing (≥ 2 visits), wheezing (≥ 1) or shortness of breath (≥ 1) in the previous 12 months'. All children in this prospective cohort study will be followed until the age of six. For our prediction rule, demographic data, data with respect to clinical history and additional tests (specific immunoglobulin E (IgE), fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO), peak expiratory flow (PEF)) are collected. History of airway specific medication use, symptom severity and health-related quality of life (QoL) are collected to estimate the effect of different treatment intensities (as expressed in GINA levels) using recently developed statistical techniques. In total, 1,938 children at risk of asthma were selected from general practice and 771 children (40%) were enrolled. At the time of writing, follow-up for all 5-year olds and the majority of the 4-year olds is complete. The total and specific IgE measurements at baseline were carried out by 87% of the children. Response rates to the repeated questionnaires varied from 93% at baseline to 73% after 18 months follow-up; 89% and 87% performed PEF and FENO measurements, respectively.

Discussion

In this study a prediction rule for asthma in young children, to be used in (general) practice, will be cross-validated. Our study will also provide more insight in the effect of treatment of asthma in preschool children.  相似文献

The adaptation and re-adaptation process of the intervertebral disc (IVD) to prolonged bedrest is important for understanding IVD physiology and IVD herniations in astronauts. Little information is available on changes in IVD composition. In this study, 24 male subjects underwent 60-day bedrest and In/Out Phase magnetic resonance imaging sequences were performed to evaluate IVD shape and water signal intensity. Scanning was performed before bedrest (baseline), twice during bedrest, and three, six and twenty-four months after bedrest. Area, signal intensity, average height, and anteroposterior diameter of the lumbar L3/4 and L4/5 IVDs were measured. At the end of bedrest, disc height and area were significantly increased with no change in water signal intensity. After bedrest, we observed reduced IVD signal intensity three months (p=0.004 versus baseline), six months (p=0.003 versus baseline), but not twenty-four months (p=0.25 versus baseline) post-bedrest. At these same time points post-bedrest, IVD height and area remained increased. The reduced lumbar IVD water signal intensity in the first months after bedrest implies a reduction of glycosaminoglycans and/or free water in the IVD. Subsequently, at two years after bedrest, IVD hydration status returned towards pre-bedrest levels, suggesting a gradual, but slow, re-adaptation process of the IVD after prolonged bedrest.  相似文献

BackgroundIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic functional condition, considerably reduces quality of life (QoL) and referral to gastroenterology is common. Until now, however, the impact of seeing a gastroenterologist for IBS on patients’ QoL and utility has not been assessed.MethodsPatients referred with “probable IBS” to the Nottingham Treatment Centre between October 2012 and March 2014 were invited to complete a QoL questionnaire (EuroQol–5 Dimension) before their first appointment. Patients with confirmed IBS who completed this baseline assessment were sent follow-up questionnaires three and twelve months later. Global QoL and utility were measured at each time point and change from baseline calculated. Paired t-tests analysed the significance of any change.ResultsOf 205 invited patients, 69 were eligible and recruited. Response at three and twelve months was 45% and 17% respectively. Median global QoL at baseline was 67.5 (Interquartile range [IQR] 50.0 to 80.0), with a mean increase of 3.25 (95% confidence interval [CI] -5.38 to 11.88) three months later and a mean decrease of -1.82 (95% CI -16.01 to 12.38) after one year. The median utility at baseline was 0.76 (IQR 0.69 to 0.80), with a mean increase of 0.06 (95%CI -0.01 to 0.14) at three months and no change, 0.00 (-0.16 to 0.16), after one year.ConclusionPatients experienced a small but not statistically significant increase in QoL and utility three months after seeing a gastroenterologist for IBS, which was not maintained. Gastroenterology referral does not appear to appreciably improve Qol for most people with IBS.  相似文献

We retrospectively assessed linear growth and final height in a group of 24 patients suffering from juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) during childhood, receiving steroid therapy. In these patients, a significant loss of height (-2.7 +/- 1.5 SDS) occurred in the first years of the disease which was positively correlated with prednisone therapy duration. After remission of the disease and prednisone discontinuation, most of the patients (70%) had catch-up growth but 30% had a persistent loss of height. Their mean final height was strongly correlated with their mean height at the end of steroid therapy and was significantly different between the group of patients with catch-up growth (-1.5 +/- 1.6 SDS) and the group without catch-up growth (-3.6 +/- 1.2 SDS). This pattern of growth observed in JIA patients should help us to define strategies of GH treatment in these patients in order to improve their final height. We have previously reported the beneficial effects on growth and body composition of a 1-year GH treatment in a group of 14 growth-retarded patients suffering from juvenile idiopathic arthritis, receiving glucocorticoid therapy. These patients (n = 13) were treated again with GH at the same dosage (0.46 mg/kg/week) for another 3-year period. GH treatment markedly increased growth velocity in these patients, but had a minor effect on SDS height suggesting that these children will remain short at adult age. Using GH earlier in these patients during the course of their disease may prevent growth deterioration and metabolic complications induced by chronic inflammation and long-term steroid therapy.  相似文献

The aims of the present study were to examine changes in health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) and depressive symptoms in adolescents with extreme obesity undergoing Roux‐en‐Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) across the first postoperative year. A prospective longitudinal observational study of 31 adolescent patients undergoing RYGBP at a pediatric medical center (mean = 16.4 years; 64.5% females, mean BMI 63.5; 97% of study eligible and consecutive patients) was conducted. Participants completed two adolescent HRQOL measures, the PedsQL (generic) and the IWQOL‐Kids (weight‐related), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and height and weight were measured at three time points: baseline, and 6 and 12 months following RYGBP. Prior to RYGBP, significant impairments in HRQOL were documented and 38.7% reported depressive symptomatology in the clinical range. As expected, BMI and depressive symptoms decreased and HRQOL improved from baseline to 12 months post‐RYGBP. Linear mixed modeling analyses detected several nonlinear slopes in BMI, depressive symptoms, and the majority of HRQOL domains over time with deceleration in these postoperative changes beginning at the 6th month time point. In contrast, the rate of change in weight‐related social relations was linear (e.g., no deceleration), indicating continued improvement across the first postoperative year. Adolescent RYGBP results in significant improvement in HRQOL and depressive symptomatology over the first postoperative year. Longer‐term follow‐up will be critical to determine adolescent weight and psychosocial trajectories, their interrelations, and what role psychosocial status plays in continued weight loss, maintenance, and regain.  相似文献

Introduction

The aim of this study was to examine the associations of elevated serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) with change in muscle strength in patients with established knee osteoarthritis (OA), at 2 years.

Methods

Data from 186 patients with knee OA were gathered at baseline and at 2-year follow-up. CRP (in milligrams per liter) and ESR (in millimeters per hour) were measured in serum from patients’ blood. Strength of quadriceps and hamstrings muscles was assessed by using an isokinetic dynamometer. The association of inflammatory markers with change in knee muscle strength was analyzed by using uni- and multi-variate linear regression models.

Results

Patients with elevated CRP values at both baseline and 2-year follow-up exhibited a lower increase in knee muscle strength for a period of 2 years (β = -0.22; P = 0.01) compared with the group with non-elevated levels at both times of assessment. The association persisted after adjustment for relevant confounders. Elevated ESR values at both times of assessment were not significantly associated with change in knee muscle strength (β = -0.05; P = 0.49).

Conclusions

Our results indicate that elevated CRP values are related to a lower gain in muscle strength over time in patients with established knee OA. Although the mechanism to explain this relationship is not fully elucidated, these results suggest inflammation as a relevant factor influencing muscle strength in this group of patients.  相似文献

1991~1998年,我们对荆州区川店镇503名6~15月龄儿童进行了现行沪191麻疹疫苗血清流行病学效果观察,结果表明,初次免疫后1个月麻疹IgG抗体阳转率为9165%,GMT为1∶26674,达保护滴度者比例为465%。随着时间的推移,第4年上述指标迅速下降到4686%、1∶1274和185%,第6年时低至2943%、1∶489和136%。02ml、03ml和05ml麻疹疫苗组的近期和远期效果是类似的,初免后1个月时IgG滴度越高,其免疫持久性越好;初免月龄是影响麻苗免疫效果的主要原因,6月龄初免组的免疫效果明显低于≥8月龄组。结果提示麻苗8月龄初免是可行的。  相似文献

DESIGN AND METHODS: In a group of 30 older diabetic patients with poor glycemic control, serum levels of lipid peroxides, measured as thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances (TBARS); C-reactive protein (CRP); interleukin (IL)-6 and the soluble form of its receptor (slL-6R), were evaluated at baseline and after 2 and 3 months of therapeutic intervention. Thirty asymptomatic, untreated individuals with abnormal fasting glycemia, but otherwise healthy status, of similar age, sex, and weight served as control group. RESULTS: At baseline, glycemia (8.83 +/- 0.67mmol/l), HbA1C (8.66 +/- 0.59%), TBARS (8.68 +/- 1.21 micromol/l), CRP (16.05 +/- 3.81 mg/l) IL-6 (5.39 +/- 1.25 pg/ml) and sIL-6R (1425 +/- 492 pg/ml) were significantly higher in diabetic patients than in asymptomatic hyperglycemic individuals (p<0.001). After treatment, glycemia significantly decreased with respect to baseline values (- 9.82% after 60 days and -13.74% after 90 days), as did serum levels of TBARS (-14.05% and -21.89%, respectively), CRP (-32.71% and -43.86%), IL-6 (-23.75% and -40.63%) and sIL-6R (-34.53% and -48.49%, respectively). In diabetic patients, multiple regression showed, at each time, that TBARS and IL-6 were independently correlated with CRP, considering CRP as the dependent variable. Similar correlations were found in asymptomatic hyperglycemic subjects. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that oxidative stress might be implicated in promoting a state of low-grade systemic inflammation in elderly patients with type II diabetes.  相似文献

We studied 241 nursery and primary school 3- to 10-year old children with a discrete-trial version of the Stroop Test, including both a Color-Naming and (for the 6- to 10-year olds only) a Word-Reading task. The classic Stroop effect was present across all the ages, with an inverted U-shaped pattern: increasing from 3- to 7-year olds, then decreasing. Preschool children who were able to read showed a Stroop effect larger than same-age, unable to read children. The reverse Stroop effect was present across all the studied ages but the 6-year-olds, who instead displayed some facilitation in reading congruent vs. black words. Since the acquisition of reading skills turned out to be crucial for the Stroop effects, the present research may be useful to study developmental reading impairments by providing normative data.  相似文献
