Many small fish, including several juvenile Atlantic flatfish, are most abundant in shallow areas presumable because these habitats enhance survivorship and/or growth. In this study, we investigated size-dependent depth distributions and the role of shallow habitats as predator refuges for age-0 winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) in a northwest Atlantic estuarine nursery. Analysis of trawl surveys performed during the larval settlement period throughout the Navesink River and Sandy Hook Bay, New Jersey, showed that as fish increased in size, depth of occurrence gradually decreased, so that individuals >35 mm standard length (SL) were concentrated in habitats ∼1 m deep. Tethering in structurally simple and adjacent shallow and deep habitats showed that predation risk for flounder (30-50 mm SL) was low in shallow water (<1 m) and increased rapidly with depth. Summer flounder (Paralychthys dentatus), which were more abundant in trammel nets in deep habitats and included winter flounder in their diets, appeared to be important consumers of tethered fish. Our results indicate that following larval settlement, winter flounder emigrate from or suffer high mortality in deeper water to become concentrated in shallow habitats that can serve as predator refuges even when they lack complex physical structures. These results highlight the potential for functional habitat loss when natural and/or anthropogenic factors make shallow habitats unavailable to young fish.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to describe the otolith shape development of cod from post-metamorphosis larvae to juveniles and to examine whether shape development is an ontogenetically determined process. Fish were reared under three different temperature regimes and two feeding levels. I examined shape by the length~width relationship of the otolith as well as the number and size of the lobes formed. Otolith size and crenulation is exclusively linked to fish size, indicating an ontogenetically determined development. Otolith shape is closely associated with the spatial development of the lobes. This process is linked with food consumption. Higher food consumption leads to a higher number of larger lobes, resulting in a more rectangular otolith. In conclusion: Otolith shape development consists of an ontogenetic component in the form of increasing size and crenulation and an environmental component impacting on the size and number of the lobes formed.  相似文献

Northward expansion of Thalassia testudinum (turtle grass) in Laguna Madre is occurring faster than can be explained by rhizome growth. We hypothesized that seedling establishment can account for the measured rates of meadow expansion and that seedling carbohydrate reserves are utilized until the plant is photosynthetically self-sufficient. To address seedling establishment, we estimated seed output, seedling dispersal and survival. Carbon dynamics were calculated from measurements of biomass allocation, non-structural carbohydrate carbon reserves and photosynthetic parameters in relation to T. testudinum seedling age. Potential seed production calculated for 1996 was consistent with field observations and was estimated at 66±14 seeds m−2 bare area. Fruits can be positively buoyant for up to 10 days, while seeds were generally buoyant for <1 day. Water current measurements, made at about the time of seed release, indicate a positive net transport of 1.5 km d−1 to the north. Seedling survival in laboratory culture after 6 months was 96% compared to 11% in the field after 1 year. The average root:rhizome+seed:leaf ratio changed from 0:11:1 for a 1 week old plant to 1:3:1 for a 15 month old plant. Seedlings used to determine whole plant photosynthesis ranged in age from about 1 week (0.25 months) to 15 months. Gross Pmax increased from 80 to 220 μmol O2 gdw sht−1 h−1, while whole plant respiration decreased from 170 to 60 μmol O2 gdw sht−1 h−1. As the photosynthetic parameters changed, the average non-structural carbohydrate carbon (NSCC) reserves of the seeds decreased from 24 to 3.0 mg NSCC plant−1. Subsequent increases in NSCC were the result of rhizome development. Daily carbon balance, assessed using Hsat periods of 8–18 h d−1, predicts that T. testudinum seedlings become photosynthetically self-sufficient between 2 and 6 months. The unique characteristics of T. testudinum, including seed buoyancy, high seed production and survival rates, coupled with ontogenetic changes in carbon allocation and production imply that sexual reproduction can be important in the long distance dispersal and colonization for this species.  相似文献

Although most upwelling regions are marked by strong fluctuations in water temperature, few studies have examined how episodic cold-water events affect the physiology and ecology of benthic marine invertebrates. I tested the hypothesis that upwelling-related variation in water temperature regulates the feeding, growth, and energetics of two rocky intertidal predators, the sea star Pisaster ochraceus (Brandt, 1835) and the whelk Nucella canaliculata (Duclos, 1832). Sea stars and whelks were maintained in laboratory tanks at a constant 9 °C, a constant 12 °C, and a treatment that simulated the Oregon coast upwelling regime by cycling between 14-day periods of 12 and 9 °C. Early in the experiments, sea stars and whelks held at 9 °C consumed about 30% fewer mussels (Mytilus trossulus) than those in warmer tanks. Despite lower consumption by whelks in colder tanks, 9 and 12 °C individuals attained the same final size. Similarly, sea stars in 9 °C tanks showed greater growth per gram of mussel tissue consumed than individuals held at 12 °C. These results suggest that reduced consumption under colder conditions was balanced by reduced metabolic costs. Moreover, there appeared to be an energetic advantage to living in the temperature regime characteristic of intermittent upwelling. Sea stars alternately exposed to 12 and 9 °C had a significantly higher growth rate, conversion efficiency, and storage of reserves in the pyloric caeca than individuals in the constant 12 °C tanks. Whelks maintained under fluctuating temperatures tended to grow faster than those held at constant 12 or 9 °C, although this trend was not statistically significant (p=0.069). These results suggest that benthic consumers experiencing cyclic temperatures may feed intensely during periods of warmer water while benefiting from reduced metabolic costs during cold-water intrusions. Because the fecundity of Pisaster and Nucella is a function of energy stored during the upwelling season, interannual variability in upwelling patterns could alter the reproductive output of these species.  相似文献

Switchover in the sensitivity of the prothoracic glands to juvenile hormone analogue during the last-larval instar of Spodoptera littoralis occurs in the middle of the third scotophase i.e. at the end of phagoperiod when the body weight is maximal and the ecdysteroid is increasing in the haemolymph. Application of the analogue to larvae neck-ligated before the switchover completely inhibits or delays metamorphosis due to an inhibitory effect on the prothoracic gland cells and is not mediated by the nervous system. This inhibition by the analogue is dose-dependent, and when complete inhibition of metamorphosis occurs, the prothoracic glands cells degenerate. Treatment of neck-ligated larvae with the analogue after the switchover stimulates metamorphosis by accelerating the appearance of an ecdysteroids peak in the haemolymph. The stimulatory effect of the analogue to the prothoracic glands in neck-ligated larvae is not direct one, and some unknown factors seem to play a role therein.

The probale role of prothoracicotropic hormone as a synchronizing factor in the switchover in the sensitivity of the prothoracic glands to juvenile hormone is discussed.  相似文献

Juvenile hormone (JH), which controls many developmental and physiological processes in Drosophila melanogaster, is synthesized de novo in the specialized endocrine glands, corpus allatum (CA). The present study concerns JH metabolism, reproduction and stress resistance in Drosophila with genetic ablation of a part of CA cells. The correlated regulation of JH biosynthesis and degradation in Drosophila adults has been found: ablation of CA cells led to (1) a dramatic decrease in activity of the key regulatory enzyme of JH biosynthesis, juvenile hormone acid methyl transferase and (2) a considerable increase in JH-hydrolyzing activity. It has been also shown that ablation of CA cells caused three significant physiological changes: (1) an increase in the intensity of response of JH degradation system to heat stress; (2) a disturbance of reproduction; (3) a decrease in stress resistance. Pharmacological rise of JH level rescued JH-hydrolyzing activity, fecundity and stress resistance in CA-ablated females. Pronouncedly, all the physiological effects caused by CA ablation were significant in females but not in males indicating a sexual dimorphism of JH physiological roles in Drosophila adults.  相似文献

Since the response to differences in resource availability is most pronounced in smaller individuals of vascular epiphytes such as Werauhia sanguinolenta Cogn. et Marchal (Bromeliaceae), I expected variation in growth and survival of small individuals to play an important role in the dynamics of entire populations. Four annual censuses (2002–2005) of three study populations, which were located across the isthmus of Panama, allowed me to construct stage transition matrices, and to conduct growth analysis and elasticity analysis. Differences between populations were highly consistent through time, but, contrary to expectations, hardly related to the comportment of smaller plants. For example, although average mortality rates were highest at the driest site, close to the Pacific, small plants were not predominantly affected. Similarly, although the highest relative growth rates (RGR) of individuals and the highest population growth rates (λ) were found in the population with the highest moisture input, which was located close to the Atlantic coast, this was not due to a particularly strong stimulation of RGR in small plants. Elasticity analysis indicated rather small differences in the importance of the three demographic processes growth, survival, and reproduction for population growth in the three populations, but invariably identified the survival of large tanks as the single most important process determining λ.  相似文献

We describe a method for the routine determination of changes in juvenile hormone levels in insect eggs. The hormones are first converted into their diol derivatives, then they are purified from other lipids and separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The radioimmunoassay of the fractions was then determined. The method permits the simultaneous assay of ecdysteroids, and it was used for determining the hormonal changes in Bombyx eggs during the pre-diapause development. Our major finding is that the hormonal content of eggs dramatically increased prior to the initiation of diapause. This hormonal rise included ecdysone, 20-OH-ecdysone and 3 juvenile hormones. The HPLC retention time of the latter corresponded to JH1 JH2 and JH3. Subsequently, the embryos entered diapause and the hormonal content of eggs was reduced to traces of ecdysteroids. These dramatic changes in juvenile hormone levels during early embryogenesis raise a number of issues which are developed in the discussion.  相似文献

Synopsis Mbuna are species of small cichlids that inhabit the rocky shoreline of Lake Malawi. They are mouthbrooders and do not guard their young. Recruitment to the community first occurs when the female deposits free-swimming young, approximately 11 mm standard length, among the rocks. Juvenile mbuna recruit to any refuge in the rock habitat and in this study, small rock shelters were monitored daily to follow the recruitment and subsequent persistence of young. Initial mortality rate was high; less than 10% of the fish survived more than 3 weeks after deposition by the female. At the two locations studied, recruitment was greater at West Thumbi Island (11 fish per day) than at Otter Point (8 fish per day). However, fewer recruits persisted as residents at Thumbi Island because mbuna young at Thumbi were capable of excluding subsequent recruits to their shelter. Similar priority effects were not observed at Otter Point. Mbuna lack pelagic stages in the life-cycle and the species composition of local adult assemblages is an important determinant of the number and type of subsequent recruits. Priority effects may help maintain stochastic influences on recruitment success and reduce the importance of deterministic processes that are directly linked to community structure.  相似文献

(1) Outbreaks of mass mortality among cultured small abalone Haliotis diversicolor supertexta Lischke with vibriosis occurred in May and September of 1998 in Kao-Hsiung, Taiwan. (2) The effect of different temperature treatments on the susceptibility of small abalone to vibrio and its extracellular products (ECP) was investigated. (3) Two bacterial strains, Vibrio alginolyticus H11 and V. parahaemolyticus B4 originally isolated from the haemolymph of the moribund small abalone at 28 and 32°C, respectively, were used in this study for susceptibility tests. (4) The results reveal that at higher temperatures, the small abalone were more susceptible to vibrio and ECP challenge indicating that the outbreak of vibriosis is associated with warm water conditions.  相似文献

Toxic algal blooms are common world-wide and pose a serious problem to the aquaculture and fishing industries. Dinoflagellate species such as Karenia brevis, Karenia mikimotoi, Heterosigma akashiwo and Chatonella cf. antiqua are recognised toxic species implicated in various faunal mortalities. Toxic blooms of Karenia cristata were observed on the south coast of South Africa for the first time in 1988 and were responsible for mortalities of wild and farmed abalone. K. cristata and various other dinoflagellate species common along the South African coast, as well as K. mikimotoi (Isolation site: Norway, Univ. of Copenhagen) and K. brevis (Isolation site: Florida, BIGELOW), were tested for toxicity by means of a bioassay involving Artemia larvae as well as abalone larvae and spat. K. cristata, like K. brevis, contains an aerosol toxin; however, the toxin present in K. cristata has not yet been isolated and remains unknown. K. brevis was, therefore, used to determine which developmental phase of the bloom would affect abalone farms most, and whether ozone could be used as an effective mitigating agent. Of the 17 dinoflagellate species tested, K. cristata, Akashiwo sanguinea, K. mikimotoi and K. brevis pose the greatest threat to the abalone mariculture industry. K. brevis was most toxic during its exponential and stationary phases. Results suggest that ozone is an effective mitigation agent but its economic viability for use on abalone farms must still be investigated.  相似文献

Synopsis Stomach contents of juvenile coho,Oncorhynchus kisutch, and chinook,O. tshawytscha, salmon collected in purse seines off the coast of Washington and Oregon were examined for variations related to predator size. There was a general trend toward increasing consumption of fish with increasing body size, due mainly to the increase in northern anchovy biomass consumed by the larger salmon. Most of the major prey taxa showed significant differences among the size classes examined for both salmon species. There was a direct relationship between predator and prey size for both coho and chinook, but considerable variation was found in prey length consumed within each size class. Prey width did not provide as good a fit as prey length for either species. In general, coho consumed larger fish prey in relation to their body length than chinook but there were substantial differences by month or year of collection.  相似文献

Ontogeny of osmoregulation and salinity tolerance were investigated throughout the larval development of two congeneric species of sesarmid crab, Armases ricordi (H. Milne Edwards) and A. roberti (H. Milne Edwards), and compared with previous observations from two further congeners, A. miersii (Rathbun) and A. angustipes (Dana). In the semiterrestrial coastal species A. ricordi, the zoeal stages were only at moderately reduced salinities (17-25.5‰) capable of hyper-osmoregulation, being osmoconformers at higher concentrations. The megalopa was the first ontogenetic stage of this species, which exhibited significant hyper-osmoregulation at further reduced salinities (≥ 5‰), as well as a moderately developed function of hypo-regulation at high concentrations (32-44‰). The riverine species A. roberti showed similar overall patterns in the ontogeny of osmoregulation, however, also some striking differences. In particular, its first zoeal stage showed already at hatching a strong capability of hyper-osmoregulation in salinities down to 5‰. Interestingly, this early expressed function became significantly weaker in the subsequent zoeal stages, where survival and capabilities of hyper-osmoregulation were observed only at salinities down to 10‰. The function of hyper-regulation in strongly dilute media re-appeared later, in the megalopa stage, which tolerated even an exposure to freshwater (0.2‰). Differential species- and stage-specific patterns of osmoregulation were compared with contrasting life styles, reproductive behaviours, and life-history strategies. In A. ricordi, the larvae are released into coastal marine waters, where salinities are high, and thus, no strong hyper-osmoregulation is needed throughout the zoeal phase. The megalopa stage of this species, by contrast, may invade brackish mangrove habitats, where osmoregulatory capabilities are required. Strong hyper-osmoregulation occurring in both the initial and final larval stages (but not in the intermediate zoeal stages) of A. roberti correspond to patterns of ontogenetic migration in this species, including hatching in freshwater, larval downstream transport, later zoeal development in estuarine waters, and final re-immigration of megalopae and juvenile crabs into limnic habitats, where the conspecific adults live. Similar developmental changes in the ecology and physiology of early life-history stages seem to occur also in A. angustipes. A. miersii differs from all other species, showing an early expression and a gradual subsequent increase of the function of hyper-osmoregulation. This ontogenetic pattern corresponds with an unusual reproductive biology of this species, which breeds in supratidal (i.e. land-locked) rock pools, where variations in salinity are high and unpredictable. Matching patterns in the ontogeny of osmoregulation and life-history strategies indicate a crucial adaptive role of osmoregulation for invasions of (by origin marine) crabs into brackish, limnic and terrestrial environments.  相似文献

The brown hare, a Leporid widespread in the world, is now dispersed across Argentina after its introduction at the end of the 19th century. Studies on hare feeding ecology are important to evaluate a potential competition with domestic and native wild herbivores. This study analyses the brown hare diet in relation to food availability, and dietary overlaps with several herbivores in northern Patagonia. Food availability was estimated by point-quadrat transects, and hare diet by microhistological analysis of faeces, carried out in five habitats in five seasonal samplings. Significant differences were detected by Kruskall–Wallis ANOVA with multiple comparisons by Tukey test. Feeding selection was detected by χ2 test, and dietary preferences by the confidence interval of Bailey. Grasses and chamaephytes were the most available plant categories, with Stipa, Panicum and Acantholippia as main species. Grasses and phanerophytes were the main dietary categories, including Poa, Panicum, Bromus, Adesmia and Prosopidastrum. The phanerophytes Prosopidastrum and Ephedra were more eaten in winter, when the main food item (Poa) presented lower availability. A higher dietary proportion of the chamaephyte Acantholippia occurred in rocky habitats, where the coarse dominant grasses were always avoided. Hares shared most food items with several wild and domestic herbivores in northern Patagonia. The lack of preference for forbs differentiates brown hares from other herbivores. However, hares exhibited important dietary similarities with plain and mountain vizcachas, goats and horses, and an interspecific competition for food is highly probable.  相似文献

We examined regulation of the myogenic heart by two identified cardioacceleratory neurons (CA1, CA2) in early juveniles of the isopod Ligia exotica. Repetitive stimulation of either the CA1 or CA2 axon increased the frequency and plateau amplitude of the action potential and decreased the maximum hyperpolarization of the cardiac muscle. These effects were larger with increasing stimulus frequency. The rate of increase in the frequency caused by CA1 stimulation was significantly larger than that by CA2. No impulse activity of the cardiac ganglion was induced by acceleratory nerve stimulation. The frequency of the muscle activity was decreased by injection of a hyperpolarizing current into the muscle during stimulation of the acceleratory nerve. In a quiescent heart, acceleratory nerve stimulation caused an overall depolarization in the muscle membrane and the amplitude of the depolarization induced by CA1 stimulation was significantly larger than that by CA2. These results suggest that CA1 and CA2 neurons regulate the myogenic heart affecting directly the cardiac muscle; the CA1 neuron produces more potent effects than does the CA2 neuron.  相似文献

Rearing methods for two coleopterous predators,Thanasimus dubius andTemnochila virescens, imported into Australia for the biological control ofIps grandicollis, were developed. Bionomic data obtained from laboratory rearings between 1982–1987 showed thatT. dubius eggs took about 7 days to hatch and that duration of the larval stage was about 42 days. Observations showed thatT. dubius had a prolonged prepupal stage (x=56.4 days, range 14–274 days), which was probably non-diapausal in nature. Mean adult longevity was 50 days (range 1–358 days).Temnochila virescens eggs took almost 9 days to hatch, and a lengthy larval stage (x=155.4 days, range 73–333 days) was observed. Mean duration of the pupal stage was 14 days (range 7–28 days). A long preoviposition period (x=141 days, range 47–206 days) was observed, and adults were very long-lived (x=232.7 days, range 14–667 days). Capacity for increase (rc) calculated from rearing data suggested that numbers ofT. dubius could be increased faster thanT. virescens. Mortality between 1982–1987 averaged about 70% for both species. However, mortality ofT. dubius in 1987 increased significantly, suggesting that inbreeding or other methodological factors could be responsible. A mass-rearing method usingIps-infested pine billets was developed as a cheaper alternative to laboratory rearing, and was shown to be effective in producing large numbers of insects for release.  相似文献
